Title: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: tag_one on August 09, 2008, 01:57:26 AM
Hi there,
In this topic I'll show and discuss my latest industrial projects. Please feel free to comment or give advice!

If you see a nice industrial building in real life don't hesitate and post some pictures in here. Inspiration is always more than welcome  ;)

Let's start with my newest project. Adding a bunch of low stage I-ht buildings to the game so that the default (ugly) Maxis I-ht buildings can be blocked  :D
Here's my first building. Unfortunately not really a low stage building as it's a stage 7 CAMeLOT. It's one of those boring industrial buildings you can find in many European cities.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg177.imageshack.us%2Fimg177%2F3672%2Fitbc8.jpg&hash=e4583ed5c5f90791f8fd638f72b7b001bbc6a8e2)

Advice and comments are welcome :)

Not all maxis buildings are ugly. $%Grinno$%

However some more variety is needed, and so far it looks quite good, although is there a place where they can load and offload?

Great idea, and the building looks good so far.  Perhaps two versions, one with and one without the pool out front.  Also the metal texture on the ramp seems pretty oversized.  I realize that you'd lose the bumps in it, but right now it looks pretty unnatural IMO.

Hi there and thanks for the comments

Allan Kuan, thanks for you suggestion about the loading dock. I completely forgot about it during the modeling  :D
I made the pond in front of the building a bit smaller and added a loading dock to the building :)

Chrisadams, thanks for your comment. I'll make another lower version without a pond and a ramp as well. I also changed the metal texture on the ramp with a bigger version and it looks indeed much better :)

Here's a picture of the improved front of the building:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg401.imageshack.us%2Fimg401%2F5164%2Fi13iz6.jpg&hash=028ffeceba262e773d83acdc94fb866bc3e3aeb8)

And here a picture of the side of the building:

The addition of the door to the side of the ramp works really well.  Maybe some access to the roof is in order?

I like the roof top air conditioning - the larger one with the geometry. Thanks for the idea. I'll use it in some future bat.

It's always a great sight to see you making new industrials!  I take it that you're making a set similar to those I-M fillers and buildings you made some time ago.  If so, I'm very glad about that.  :)

Nice job on the "Pharmalab" building.  The recent improvements you've made to the front were great.  Now, I think some larger lots are in order... you know me, I have to have room for parking and trucks.  :P

Thanks for the comments everyone

Diggis Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add some stairs at the back of the building :)

jmyers2043 Thanks, I'm glad you like the HVAC units on the roofs. If you want to have them you can find a gmax model somewhere on the hellhole. Just search for my nick, it was one of my last uploads there so it should be on the top :)

Kyle Thanks for you comment. I'll make some larger lots as well with more space for parking, trucks and storage

Simpson Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

Just to inform you all, I'll be on vacation in Switzerland for two weeks. After those two weeks I'll get quite a busy period which will probably keep me away from the BAT for awhile. &mmm Hopefully I got some more spare time in November to finish this project.
BTW, don't worry there's a secret proppack by me waiting to be released on the LEX. This will be uploaded someday in September ;)
See you around

Thanks for your comments Ejc and Bat. I'm glad you like the building :)

Back from holidays, so back to business. Unfortunately my study will consume a lot of spare time the coming weeks. So don't expect to much progress on the I-ht project. Because of the lack of spare time I decided to do some lotting work as it´s much faster than Batting a building. So here you go, I´m making some additional I-d lots with the use of Gascooker's excellent I-d buildings. This is number one. a 2x3 and a 3x2 stage 2 galvanization company :)

Just downloaded your latest prop pack, the container stuff one. And I love it. As I said in the LEX though, have you considered doing an uparm version of the main crane for when it is inactive?

Arthur, thanks! I uploaded both files the public Lex  :)

Yoman, thanks I'm glad you like the container crane. Your container crane is great as well  ;)
My crane is a timed prop, during lunch time the arm is raised in the air :)

Oh goodie, got to give my Sims a lunch break to become fatter :P Though your crane doesn't have an elevator in the leg like the ones in California, must be because your crane isn't American. :P Can't wait to use it

Pat Thanks my friend. I currently have quite a lot of work to do and some birthday parties ahead so don't expect much the coming weeks. Maybe some day i got some time left to do something with my harbour props :)

Kyle Thanks I'm glad you like my two newest lots  ;)

Yoman There's indeed no elevator in the crane, just stairs so your sims won't become too fat :D

See you around folks I'll be back soon (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.fokzine.net%2Fs%2Fbye.gif&hash=4f0037de9924105f30c2dd7e42a85284de45ac02)

Thanks Pat and Simpson!!

Finally I found some time again for SC4. Today I made 3 small I-d lots. They are not very special but they work great together with my latest industrial lots:

I'll add some more lots before I put it into beta this weekend :)

Andreas, thanks for your comment. The factory is set as an anchor building while the boiler room is set as a I-d mechanical building. The sheds and the storage spaces are of course I-d out lots  :)

Geronimo, thanks I'm glad you like these lots. I'll place them in beta this week :)

^^ many thanks for all the kind replies. It's great to hear you guys like this project. Cogeo uploaded some new warehouses for container terminals and I'm looking forward to make some lots with them. I'll try to finish this project by the end of the year :)

Now that the Christmas holidays have begun I finally have some time again to do some lotting and batting. Yesterday I opened 3dsmax again after more than a month and started batting a new industrial building. After 3 hours (personal record!) I was quite pleased with the result and exported it to the game. After a while the building grew and here's the result:

I know, not very exciting. But it's a nice filler. I will change some small this on the lot and maybe redo some of its textures. Suggestions are welcome :)

Looking good.  Should have some happy fishes out there in SimNation now!

Maybe a second lot, slightly larger with some green space around it?  Keep the other industrials from getting too close to the buildings....  :D
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: Andreas on December 21, 2008, 05:59:21 AM
You could lower the saturation a bit (esp. the skylights and the green walls), but otherwise, I really like this. The game is sorely lacking such generic modern industrial warehouses. As they look modern, I'd sugesst to make them high tech industry growables, so they won't clash with jestarr's beautiful I-D and I-M brick industrials. What about making a few more with different colors and put them into a building family?
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects

Very nice work.  I agree about lowering the saturation levels just a bit.  Other than that, it's another great creation.  &apls

Those seaport lots look great too!  :)

metasmurf Thanks

Arne Thanks, well I already had all the textures so that saved me about half the time. The building itself is nothing more than some extruded rectangles with 6 omni's inside  ;)

SimGoober Thanks I'll make some bigger lots as well :)

Andreas Thanks for your suggestion. I'll tone down the colors a bit and render some new buildings with other textures. I shall make some of them I-m and other I-ht  :)

Kyle Thanks, well you have to wait a bit longer for the seaport I first need to finish something else (an evil mod that does something with your interchanges. more info will follow later this week)

FrankU Thanks, I will start working on the seaport again soon. I'm not really satisfied with the look of the lots yet.

Meastro444 Thanks  :D

Allan Kuan Thanks, at the moment I don't have plans for Id buildings (I need some inspiration first). But when I do start making them I'll take your request in consideration :)

On this last day of 2008 I'll post some pictures of my latest I-m project. I've made some more buildings with different textures as Andreas suggested. There are now 4 I-m buildings and 2 I-ht buildings. I'll make some more of them later today. I also started lotting them and got the first of them to grow within a few minutes. Here are the pictures, enjoy:

Hi there, after some busy weeks I found some time again to bat a building. Just another modern European I-m industrial building. It's a stage 3 one with 270 jobs:

No, at least not as E. H. Harms. ;) I photoshopped that in for a friend on a pic that I found ages ago. :P I just wanted to show those pink trucks, mentioning that they would fit in better.

I made another industrial building this morning. It's a simple 4x6 I-ht building. If you have any suggestions or comments to improve this building, please let me know ;)

That industrial building looks excellent my friend.
Textures are nice and roof junk looks good too.
My only suggestion will be to add some windows on those two big rectangles..  ;)

Arthur.
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: tag_one on March 08, 2009, 07:43:26 AM
Thanks Arthur. Imo windows wouldn't fit over there, but I'll add some stuff to make it look less bare :)
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: Andreas on March 08, 2009, 08:27:38 AM
Well, as usual, my "complaint" would be that the wall texture is a tad too saturated, and the roof texture looks a bit too busy for me. ;) Maybe you could scale it up a little as well, since the trucks look rather tall, compared to those doors and the general roof height. But we definitely need more I-HT stuff, so this is much appreciated. :) I wouldn't add windows to those "blocks" as well, but what about a company logo?

Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: tag_one on March 08, 2009, 11:30:51 AM
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I changed the roof height and the loading docks. As for the wall textures, I'm not going to make them as grey as Barby's hair :D
Anyway here's to new design with some slightly desaturated textures :)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fxs137.xs.to%2Fxs137%2F09100%2Find3882.jpg&hash=c2ce3442a736b3742fc1648f7a371a3e53e064ff) (http://xs.to)

Although I want more I-ht as well I tend to agree with io_bg, this looks way too I-m for HT :'(

Yes, it's very good now!
JeStarr is the architect of 19th century industrial complexes, but this kind of lots is very much needed in more contemporary industrial areas. So I'd vote for IM, if there would be a poll and if I were allowed to throw in my opinion.

Looking good.  The new height works well.

I'd take a little more of a look at the "office" entrance.  Looks bare.  Maybe an awning above it, or a sign.  Trash cans or modest planters on either side of the door? And the sign up top blends in; maybe try a darker texture?

Hello Tag one, Jack wilds here...

I like your contempo-type buildings for the manufacturing parks, they the look I'm going for... thanks for your added creativity to add to my cities.

As for the 'Blue Conductor Industries' (my name cause I don't know its name  ()stsfd() ) structure I'd consider two versions one HT and the I-D, separated by color schemes, graphics, name and query.  The latest version is better than the earlier, glad you correct the scale appearance, and color tone adjustments.
I'd also do something more attractive for the office entrance like SG recommended -awning, planters...
then I'd add a picnic table for smoker breaks and lunch with a tree or two and something in pavement graphic as in 'exit' 'entrance' or arrows designating it, 'visitor parking' etc... whatever you care to do its all good...  ;)
keep making these operations my sims need a job just as badly as I do.  &mmm

Yep, this new version looks a lot better.  I like the loading docks!  :)

I agree with SG about the sign.  Perhaps some kind of an outline for the letters or a different color altogether would look better.  ;)

Many thanks for the suggestions guys, they are much appreciated!

I changed the building a bit and transformed it in an I-m building (it looked a bit too I-m to me).
Than I made a copy of the original model and made an more high tech version. I removed most of the loading docks and replaced them by curtain walls. I also made a nice park in front of it.
Here's the I-m version, PolarTech:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fxs537.xs.to%2Fxs537%2F09110%2Find1734.jpg&hash=1a4b67470b50f699f2689206486bb8b1378ca2ad) (http://xs.to)

And here's the I-ht version, Jack Wild Conductors:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fxs537.xs.to%2Fxs537%2F09110%2Find2450.jpg&hash=9616857a3eae18d4ccb4701c8127f93a8f29a859) (http://xs.to)

I'm not sure about the flowers in front of the building. Personally I like them as they form a nice contrast with my I-m buildings, but I can understand it if people think it's a bit too much  :D

Your opinions please ;)
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: Andreas on March 15, 2009, 10:40:26 AM
The I-M lot looks very nice, but the I-HT version is a bit crammed - too many flowers indeed. ;) The parking lots are blocking one loading ramp, so you'd better cut down the greenery a bit and move the parking lots to the right. I like the lawn with the tree and the lunch table, though. :)
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: Rayden on March 15, 2009, 11:57:57 AM
I concur with Andreas, that loading dock with the cars blocking it and the potted trees are something to change perhaps. The rest is good, really good.
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: Jack_wilds on March 15, 2009, 03:01:51 PM
Hello Tag one, Jack wilds here...

I agree with Andreas concerning moving the parking to the right out of the way of the loading area. Moving the parking lot over will cut the garden in half and it should look OK, or place it in one of the corners or ring the garden around  the tree...
I like the hedge on the right lot line, paths, the curtain wall brick and side door leading to the break table...

It'll be a balancing act of elements in a small space.  However, two potted trees at the entry is good but not so close to the structure and then limit the hedge to one side or the other of the entry walk -thinking on the left side... a path from the loading area to the front entry might work; cause those truckers will blaze one... and/or consider a narrower entry approach walk   ;)

Like the graphic and the names, is the 'polar tech' bear for both operations? perhaps a bison for the 'Jack Wild Conductors' or a 'wired' red bison or bear head, after all -wires, cables and several electronic devices act as conductors even us in a lightning storm.  ;)

However its your project and the creative license of final appearance is yours to make, enjoy it.  :sunny:

Hi Jack,
Spring has also started over here. The nice weather is keeping me away from my pc unfortunately  :D
Both industrials are now for about two weeks in beta. The only thing I heard so far is that Barby made a power plant out of one of the buildings :D
As both buildings already grew some times over here so I thing they are ready to be shared with the community.

I agree!  &apls

There is one thing missing with all this seaport stuff in SC4: it is very difficult to find any buildings for seaport management and maintenance. There is a harbour master's office in every port (not only industrial), other offices (for example custom office), warehouses, garages... Now the only typical seaport building in SC4 is an excellent Jeonij's Seaport Control Tower from La Coruna - but it would be strange to have it in every seaport  :). I has to think very intensively when I tried to complete buildings in the seaport showed lately in my MD  :)
Also seaport warehouses and storage buildings  are mostly old ones, there is a lack of modern ones.
Vehicles are transported on ships too. Now the only waterfront piece with a parking and cars prepared to loading is in the Somy's set. Such car parkings (to load cars on ships) are common in many industrial ports.
You are one of the best specialists in the industrial stuff area, so I give you some suggestions, maybe you will be interested in them in future?... ;)

^^ I have a lot of secret projects which will be uploaded someday without a notice ;)

Anyway here's a new hi tech industrial in the make. The basic modeling is done. I still need to model all the details like roofjunk, interior, entrances etc. I also need to work on the textures of the walls. They are a bit saturated now, but they form a nice placeholder to show how the walls will look like.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg20.imageshack.us%2Fimg20%2F7319%2Frenas.jpg&hash=ad0312eb3963b0eb9b8f14cf0c9222321edb27d6) (http://img20.imageshack.us/i/renas.jpg/)

Hello Tag One, Jack wilds here...

This is looking really promising...

about the only thing I'd add is either color on a corner or an a part of the wall or entry that relates to the company name... or <theres more  ???>

around the entry or a corner or along the base would be a stone of some sort.  A project similar to yours in the NE industry park used a lime or field stone to its green/prairie/post mod appearance.  The entry is looking promising, will the window glass have a tint? I'd make a lite green hue it will go good with the emerging color scheme.

Then to boot if I am not being so bold is a possible name... here in the fox valley is company called 'plexus' a large out fit that makes circuits, CBs, PLCs, and other electro-electronic stuff... or a flexo paper printing operation called 'flexus' fictional but also similar to one of many printing companies here in the valley or...  &idea at any rate thoughts for inspiration

I'll stop here,  :satisfied:

Jack

I do not know anything about the design side of things so I do not know how easy or feasible this would be to do. Looking at the size of the trailer it looks like the streetlight and grass would be in the way if someone were using that first loading bay. Could you make the grass flush with the diagonal side of the building or move the light and grass up to the front corner of the building.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg194.imageshack.us%2Fimg194%2F7880%2F38615061.jpg&hash=f814b60bc3f8caf9093b6e2a1c585e0e4742758f)

I still think this is incredible lot and think it would look great in any of my cities

I like the 'Rena Electronics', the color scheme, the front with its entry, and the angled shipping bays look good too... how does it look in lights?...

any inspiration/progress on the biege ind-structure, -or was it scrapped for the 'Rena E' version, because that one was also looking promising... particularly the entry, it reminds me of a telephone company shop/offices here.  hope all my previous suggestions weren't over the top ...  ::)

Looking very nice already, but I do have some suggestions. :) I agree about the grass strip and the streetlights next to the building - you don't really need the latter anyway, as the lights would be mounted on the wall in a RL scenario. Add one or two more along the fence, this should be more than enough. Also, relocate the parking spots for the cars. It looks odd that the cars are parked at the far end of the lot, while the main entrance is located at the front. Maybe some workers have parked the cars there, but I doubt the executives and visitors would like to navigate around the trucks and walk across the whole yard. Maybe you can sacrifice a bit of the greenery at the entrance for additional parking. Finally, I think two forklifts should be enough, and maybe you'll find some other freight props - I can't help to think that those you placed along the fence are cement bags or something like that. ;) I do like the clean layout, though, and the flora creates a very nice atmosphere in the otherwise rather boring industrial areas.

Io_bg, Thanks  :)

Jmdude1, Thanks, I surely will make some more I-HT buildings. And when I'm finished with I-HT I'll start on some dirty industrials  ;)

Projectadam Thanks for your comment. I made the made the entrance road a bit wider. I removed the grass and the light. In stead of the light I rerendered the model with a light attached to it :)

Jack, Thanks mate! Your advice is always appreciated and is a great source of inspiration to me ;) The previous building is kind of scrapped, but some elements like the entrance will be used on future projects.

Andreas, Thanks. I added a small carpark in front of the building. As for the props, I think I'll bat some freight props myself in the future. Jess' props are great but I would like to have some more variation. :)

I like this version...  the fixes made it more agreeable, even the wooden decking for the entry.  Wooden decking for entries to offices, retail, semi-industrial were a trendy thing for a while here in the northwoods particularly during the early ninties.  Now its usually concrete that is stained or stamped or plain... or if its a rather upscaled place it would be stone, brick, or pavers...  ;)

Andreas, Thanks. I'm glad you like it!

Jeff, Thanks. The wooden decking is indeed not very common, but I've seen it several times. If maintained properly it will look great for years and it surely has more allure that brick or (even worse) concrete and asphalt pavement.

Jack, Thanks!  :)

I'll be off till Sunday to meet with some of my friends from the BSC. It's time for our yearly meeting. I won't upload a beta version until at least Monday (if I'm starting to get sober by that time). And besides that I'm way too scared that Barby will use my model as example while explaining here scary tools  :D

Hi there, I'm back in NL again. At the BSC meeting I spoke with Arne (tram master Vester) and he had some suggestions for this building. I changed the lot and the building a bit. The biggest difference is that the entrance to the loading docks is now much wider so that the trucks have some more space. Here's a small picture from the LE:

looks much better this version

Only thing missing (in my opinion) are some rubbish skips.

Other than that I look forward to its release

Thanks for your comment TTC  :)

I woke up early this night and could catch sleep anymore, so I went to my PC. I wasn't really in the mood for batting a building and especially not the cathedral (way to early to get a headache). I started with watching some pictures of the BSC Euromeet and it didn't took long before I got an idea and opened 3ds max.
This is the Pink Cap Music studio. The place where a young pink caped girl is in charge of making annoying ringtones for mobile phones  :P

I know, it's not one of my best buildings. But the result is imo quite nice after 6 hours of work. At least I'm a bit more tired now  :D

Hehe, great idea! You could tone down the roof a bit, but for such a quick job, it looks really great - and also unique with those rounded corners. One thing you have to add is placing Ella (with her pink hat) near the entrance of the building, as if she was just leaving the studio after a recording session. ;)

Barby Thanks for your reply! I'm glad you like the building  :)

Andreas Thanks! I changed the textures of the HVAC channels so the roof looks less dark now. I also batted a small Ella in front of the building  ::)

Fred You gave me some idea's...

Guillaume Thanks! Sure I can teach you, nightlighting isn't very difficult. It's more like a lot of try and error (and some experience ofcourse).
The interior  in the building is night lighted by a omni which shines on the floor only (with the use of the include/exclude option in MAX). On the floor I added a small floorplan texture I found somewhere on google. Those kind of textures don't need to have a lot of details, if it has some color variation it should do the trick.
The signs on the left and the right side of the building are nightlighted by 2 omni's each. The first one only lights the sign itself not the wall behind it. This omni makes the sign visible at night.
The second omni is added to create the glow around the sign. This one is lights only the wall and not the sign. This way the sign won't look too bright at night. For the glow around the sign I gave the omni the following 'far attenuation' settings: start 2 and end 5. The locations for the different settings are displayed the this image:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg8.imageshack.us%2Fimg8%2F358%2Fpkmt.jpg&hash=fee84d3f6a81a6415a4efffd9a4c668631ef278c) (http://img8.imageshack.us/i/pkmt.jpg/)

Sorry if my explanation is a bit short. Have to go to work  :D Hope this short explanation made some sense, if not feel free to ask ;)

I was playing SC4 a bit yesterday evening and here are some images of the re-rendered Pink Cap Music building and some new high tech industrial stuff :)

Pink Cap Music:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg29.imageshack.us%2Fimg29%2F7237%2Fpinkwbu.jpg&hash=5b2435a1dd6c2a8e4f6a092e17b6f3cb7a25d8bf) (http://img29.imageshack.us/i/pinkwbu.jpg/)
Still have some more modding to do on this one  ::)

Found a building some days ago during a clean-up. Thought it would be a nice industrial so I rendered it and made a lot. Note that the streetlights are a modification I made for my own use. In your city these lights will disply as normal aluminum $$ lights.

And another small stage 1 building:

Hello Tagone, Jack wilds here,

Hey-hey, get a bug of inspiration and your good for a month...  :D

so while I have you, a request for a general distribution-warehouse place (aka Acme General Distributors 'the everything place -if we ain't got it you don't need it'  ;) ) for everyday things like furnishings, groceries, dry goods, hardware supplies...etc  and also a shop for 'Tinker John's' local handyman and house re-modeler extraordinaire -when he gets around to it that is, speedy he ain't but does good work, donuts and coffee included  ::)  ;D.

Glad of the variety in design -ie rounded corners, colored lighting, provides visual interest

Very topical!  Great idea and another good industrial building from you.

On the cement plant have the trucks been given the 1.3x vertical stretch?  They look a bit too low and wide to me - especially the cab.

Don't worry Jack. I haven't uploaded it as the concrete mixers are in a unfinished proppack. I need to finish that one first before I can upload it. I made a lot of random stuff this summer that still need some adequate treatment. As far as the release date is concerned:
my birthday is only a month away

Nice job about concrete industries however the scale of your concrete truck is really too big  :o

maybe 75% or 80% will be a little bit better to be more realistic with other vehicules of the game.

When I began HD props car I decided to go with a scale of + 115% (what is your scale ?? )
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: tag_one on August 29, 2010, 11:03:10 AM
I agree that the trucks came out a bit too big. It was the first time I made a truck, so getting the dimensions right is a bit difficult. I'm more used to buildings :D

I actually don't use a specific scale for my buildings. I just make what seems right to my eye. The only guidance I use is a ceiling height of about 5 to 7 meter, depending on the usage of the building. For doors I use a height of 4 meters and a width of about 2. Apart from that everything is modeled by the naked eye :)

Hello Tag_one.
First of all, I love all your work, and I am using it in my cities.

But I have in my citie one building that has a big brown box (a pictur woukd be meaningles because its only one big box).
Its a industrial buikding. It supposed to be your work: Vriemee Injection Molding.

Can you please tell me what dependencies do i need, or at least in which of your files is this building included, so I can find all the dependencies?

Thanks

...surprising developments -well done,

...along with having the brick pallets and perhaps a sales/brick yard too that can be added alongside or as a separate lot to be added elsewhere in the IND park... then with the lotting, the shipping-receive area could have a forklift with a pallet loading a flatbed truck, and the name 'Tage Brickworks' can be a fade weathered on the structure somewhere... don't forget about the office for this operation...  my thoughts for the day  ::)

the brick textures and the industry griminess is looking promising at this point I 'feel' it maybe over done -however don't fix it yet till a look in game, then you'll know -I'm concerned about fuzziness in games with too much ind.grime ...  %wrd

another thought is (here we go again  ???) in the previous stage of work its trusses were exposed - how about a portion of the structure be damaged or addition or some part exposed due to damage from an incident -kiln blew-up or a part of the operation is getting too aged and it fell into disrepair maybe it can be a separate thing ideas galore once I start tapping into notions it just keeps developing...  :D

Thanks for the comments!

I made the lot and did some alfa testing. Took me quite a while to grow this baby, but eventually she popped up next to a nice quiet neighborhood (I heard lots of gun shots  :D)
Anyway there's a forklift and a flatbed at the loading dock and I added the name to the building (in brick work of course ;))

here's an ingame shot from another angle:

Thanks for all the comments! Great to see you like this industrial building  :)
It will be on the LEX soon ;)

Personally I'm not into HD versions of buildings. If I make this building HD, it doesn't fit well between the other normal definition buildings. I think that HD is more for very small props or stand alone structures like power poles or ski lifts. So sorry, no HD version.

Anyway here's a picture of how it looks in game:

Fresh Prince of SC4D , maybe. It will be a big one and currently I'm more focussed on small filling industry. But on the long term, I'll probably make one ;)

Girafe, Thanks! I changed the roof textures a bit. As for the metal, I keep it this way. I don't want to make it look too clean :)

Aaron Graham, Thanks!

I think the roof texture is much better this way. But since this is my first green roof I'm open for suggestions :)
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: FrankU on December 04, 2010, 03:06:37 AM
Yes, the green is better.

But if you compare it to the grass on ground level you see that it is much more detailed.
Now the question is: do you want the grass to blend in with the grass on ground level or not? The advantage is that less detail will blend in better, but in comparison with how the real building would look like on an aerial photo, your grass is much more realistic. So, what are you going to choose?

Another option: make a terrain mod that features the same detailed grass as your building.... :D
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: Nardo69 on December 04, 2010, 04:59:22 AM
IMHO leave the green roof as it is. Green roofs are mostly extensive, normal greens not. Green roofs usually have different plants than normal greens as they need to withstand more sun and should use less water (which can be a huge cost for green roofs!). Having said this you shouldn't reduce the water consumption too much.

Same for the solar panels - they need to be cooled and washed.

Anyway: Nice - and unusual! _ I-HT! Will love to see it growing! ;)

If only, right?  :D  I think the building looks great tag! Looking back at the first go around with the roof, the brightness was too much. Looking at it though, I wonder if the scale is totally right. Seems like the height from the top of the second floor to the roof should be increased slightly. Green roofs are quite a bit more substantial than normal roofs.

The model looks really great. Quite a convincing example of HT industry, in my opinion.
As far as the grass on the roof is concerned, I agree with FrankU. I think it is way too detailed, looks even like a photography of a grass surface attached onto the roof, compared with how grass in SC4 usually lokks like. There is also obvious tiling of the grass.
Title: Re: Tag's Industrial Projects
Post by: spa on December 04, 2010, 12:44:00 PM
Looks great Tag! I like the green features of your latest building. Very much in keeping with the times. This might be the first green building in Sim City! My two cents on the grass, keep it as is. Yes your roof is more detailed then the Maxis grass texture, but I think the Maxis grass textures or something equivalent would look really silly on your building. Your building's too detailed for flat maxis grass to be on the roof. Your industrial building is likely to appear in an urban area where there will be less flat maxis grass and certainly less undeveloped space for it stand out against. Leave well enough alone and keep the detailed version.

Terrain changes by altitude (not to mention by mod), so making the texture match wouldn't really be possible...

The color/texture looks good to me, but yeah, there is tiling there.

Hello Tag One,

An innovative take on the now 'in' green look...

concerning the grass texture: I prefer the second, and it ought to be unique, as its a different application using different grass variety versus a typical lawn grass variety... and it appearing patterned tiled is rather typical of such installations.

As a job I once did used a sod, seeded with a slow-low growth variety able to tolerate the moisture, weather, sun, extremes. It resulted in patchy performance appearing 'blocky' as it appears in your interpretation... eventually the grass was removed and raised patio pavers -with water 'hose' for heat collection, was used instead...

concerning the height factor I would also fudge it taller to give a better profile... however its your call

its an intriguing method of leed methods towards green ideals...

Jack

Whoa, that's really scary... you know, I mod everything by hand before I add it to my plugins. During this process, I plop the building into a test city and decide on occupant numbers "manually". The rest of the values are adapted to my trusty old stats table, but in case of bigger buildings I often lack reference values to wedge the new download between. In such situations, I come up with stats by rule of thumb. So I did. When I opened the file to enter the changes, I found out that the current stats were almost 100% identical to those I was about to enter! :o Looks like I agreed with Tage and Stephane perfectly in this case.  ;D

pfffff, blows away the dense layer off dust settled in this thread. It's looks desolate and decayed, but it's still there... okey the windows are blown out and there are spider webs everywhere. But I'll keep faith. Soon this place will be filled with life again :)

I know I've been away for too long and many things happened in the past 2 years. I've been in a severe depression and had some serious real life issues to sort out. Unfortunately not everyone has the empathy to understand that, which resulted in bigger pain and frustration. Resulting in a deeper depression and a feeling of less self worth and so on. Including some very close friends that led me down. Kind of a vicious circle leading to self destruction. I kind of turned the tide and now I tried to get back to my life and pick up the good things I neglected here. I've got my own apartment, my own car, I work out in the gym, have dates and... have 3DS Max open on my pc... So I'm back, sort of, yeah I guess I'm back. I'm modeling again. One is already on the lex, the other one is pending and I've got a lot of things I want to make :)

One of them is in the picture below. I'll let you guess what it is... Hint: it's industry (duh), huge (!) and will take some time to finish :)

As far as your real life issues goes, at least you now know who your true friends are in life, which is never a good thing to find out about when you need them, but at least now you know who is a true friend and who isn't, and I wish you nothing but the best.

Welcome back, Merijn. That's great to have you back on track. :)

Depression is never a good thing. My best friend did many of them since he was little, the most recent one " went away " because I was here he said. Real life can really be a pain in the a** sometime, when it just start to go down and attract you with it down the path. The first half of the summer wasn't good for me, but thankfully for my close friends, and the community here I was able to stay up and don't do anything stupid.

Your latest upload on the LEX was great, really liked it. As for the new one, I would like to try a guess, but the picture doesn't want to load on my computer. I guess I'll have to wait for the first pictures. :)

Yeah this will indeed be the inside of the stock house. The black boxes are supposed to become openings to the underground storage bins. Between them will be about 2 or 3 railway tracks. On the gray floor you can see the conveyor belts to the skit car.

To all the curious people, this is going to be a blast furnace... Yes, Merijn is going to make a steel plant, fully customizable with different puzzle pieces (each containing a specific building or rail yard) So you can design yourself how your mill is going to look. This is going to be an incredible big projects as there are at least a dozen buildings to model  :D

Ah, nice start! I see you have all structural elements in place. Great work, and it's good to see you BATting again!

Best,

Hi all! Update time. Haven't made much progress, but something is better than nothing :D Spent most of the weekends partying and building up a social life. And during the week I'm busy with working or solving my depression and insecurities.

Maarten, Thanks! The main steel structure is indeed finished, same as the furnace by now :)

gn_leugim Thanks mate :)

whatevermind Than you will love this project ;) This (and the coke plant) are the most complex buildings to BAT. The mills and oxygen furnaces etc are much quicker to model, so expect faster progress soon ;)

Swordmaster Don't worry, the colors are temporary. I haven't done any texturing, so it will look very very different when it's finished. Expect a dark, dirty look :D

Aaron Thanks!! :)

Arthur Tnx, glad you like it!

Guillaume Awesome thanks!! Always love figures, pictures and process diagrams. I already have lot of them, but you can never have enough of them. So feel free to post more of them ;)

Picture time

The main structure is ready
Halve way with the walkways and the stairs
Still need to make the other stuff like the scrubbers and the heating system

;)

The colors remark was a joke of course ;)

I'm wondering what will be at those platforms at the base. Of course, I'm hoping for rail service features.

Almost a month later, so it's time for an update ;) Thanks for all the nice replies people!!

@Swordmaster, those platforms are the unloading docks above the storage bins. Trains will unload limestone, iron ores and cokes for the furnace on those docks. Below the docks there are bunkers where the ores a stored for a short term. From the bunkers conveyor belts bring the different materials to the weighting station above the platforms. There the ores are mixed together and hoisted to the furnace (via the diagonal structure on the side of the furnace). Hope this explained the process a bit.

I think the building is now for about 80% finished. Still need to model some details, like exhaust fans, emergency exits, signs and other stuff. But you'll get the picture:

Outstanding work on the textures, Merijn!

You're using GMAX or 3dsmax with Chris's bat4max?

awesome job tag ;)

just one tip, the roof texture looks a bit repetitive to my eye, maybe something could be done about that no? :P

Industry is rare out there, so I'm glad to see more becoming available.  The texturing is simply superb, and the layout of the building itself appears to be quite complex.  Keep the good work coming, Merijn!

is the GasTag Galvanization AG (v1.0) building located at

http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1767 (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?#)
