Title: SFBT Advent Calendar 2016
Post by: Andreas on November 30, 2016, 03:16:12 PM
Christmas is approaching slowly, but steady, and in Europe, the first day of December has started. Once more, the SFBT is keeping up the old tradition of publishing an Advent Calendar with a new download every day until Christmas. Again, we were digging deep in our archives, an uncovered some more hidden treasures that will finally see the light of the public. Granted, SC4 is aging, the community gets smaller every year, and we must admit that this is possibly the very last SFBT Advent Calendar that will happen, unless some new content will be produced in the future.

Today, we start with something rather simple, yet useful, a small set of median filler lots that N1_2888 initially created for personal use only, but it quickly became an essential item in his cities, hence he decided to publish those two little, versatile lots. The reduced design should work nicely with pretty much any situation, there are some custom streetlight props that avoid the pesky Maxis bug that prevents some props near the lot borders from lighting up properly. Sometimes, less is actually more. :)

Fred, you're welcome to join in. I don't think anyone expected you to have anything ready for health reasons, but if you're up for it I'm sure we'd be glad to have whatever it is you're offering. We still have the rest of December. ;)

@Fred: What Absolom said. ;)
@all: Thanks for the nice feedback, much appreciated! :)

Today's upload is a small, but useful one as well, and despite its simplicity a very common view esp. in Germany: a little grassy hill as roundabout centerpiece, which is supposed to guide the drivers' view and prevent distractions from traffic that arrives from the opposite direction. Like with other Avenue Roundabout fillers, pick the appropriate NAM Puzzle Piece, bulldoze the center tiles, and plop this lot, which provides an overhanging prop that fills in the center nicely.

Another little thing that collected dust in our archives is the SFBT Parking Lot Paths by Khiyana. They feature two eye-candy lots with diagonal parking lots props that were made by prepo. The download also contains a few path lots, which were inspired by PEG's "Scenic Drive Kit", one of the oldest sets of paths that has been released for the game. Back then, diagonal paths were not included, hence Khiyana made some for herself. The SDK isn't a dependency, though, you can use these lots as standalone version as well.

Does each diagonal parking come with a different configuration of times props (cars)?
Title: Re: SFBT Advent Calendar 2016
Post by: Andreas on December 02, 2016, 03:55:17 PM
prepo made two different props, as shown in the screenshot. I didn't make a prop family, though, so you can pick between those two lots, and rotate them by 180 degrees for more variety.

You might remember today's Advent Calendar download from one or another Mayor Diary, and as a matter of fact, it has been available at the STEX since quite a while. Since the RFR BAT Team is a group of German SC4 players, the SFBT decided to approach them, and offer an "SFBT overhaul" of their Maize Set, granting them a place at SimCityKurier and the LEX as well. I've updated all files to the usual SFBT standards, so they got new menu icons and descriptons, and I added two new ploppable lots as well, since the diagonal field lots that were included in the original set covered only one direction.

"RFR" is FrankyFour (also known as "Framly" here), rambuckel, igc and carlfatal. Back when the set was developed, MatheMan also created some maize-related props that never made it into the old Maize Set, which is now fixed; you'll find a new MMP icon with three little props that suit this set. Apart from the aforementioned MMPs and the ploppable field lots, the download also contains two different farms that will grow with a custome maize field. I edited the maize props, so they will cast shadows now. This might slow down older machines, but I figure it's not that much of a problem anymore with modern computers.

Thanks, guys, much appreciated! :)

Another little building that was gathering dust for way too long is Volg and Flats by JohnD. It's a typical central European building from the 1950s-1960s, which you can find virtually everywhere in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. There is a Swiss "Volg" retail store in the ground floor, and the upper floors consist of several flats. Since such a mix development isn't possible in the game, I decided to create some low-wealth commercial service lot, which should fit into any low-med density residential development, satisfying the insatable demand for such jobs.

Ahhh... yes!  That time of year for all the great Christmas traditions, be it food, music, lights, cold weather ( ;D ), and yes the SFBT Advent Calendar!  True to form, great gifts are already being handed out like candy.  :)  That roundabout filler truly is a sweet treat, and the diagonal parking and paths are a nice combination.  Notably, it seems like these diagonal paths are offset from others, providing a bit of a different touch.  Keep up the good work here!

I'm happy to see there's still so much appreciation, thanks for all the nice words!

December 6th is St. Nicholas day, which brings a little gift for all kids in Germany when they put out their polished shoes in the night before. Our gift for today is a special set of lots that is based on one of Haarlemmergold's excellent BATs. Chrisim has modified the original model by editing the FSH files, allowing him to use the building in a unique setup. The three lots are counterparts of the in-game police stations, designed for a W2W environment or a historic town center in a European city.

Here comes another eye-candy lot, and while the lot might be small (1x1), the content is rather big! It's a model of the famous rigid airship "Graf Zeppelin", which was introduced almost 90 years ago, being a revolutionary way for intercontinental travel. Sadly, the era of those big, hydrogen-filled airships didn't last very long, they were decommissioned after the tragic accident in Lakehurst, where several dozen people lost their life in a huge fireball.

Post by: Andreas on December 07, 2016, 03:17:50 PM
@gn_leugim and tomvsotis: Heh, I guess I could have raised the flammability quite a bit, but I thought that was a bit morbid, and today's safety regulations would probably forbid a hydrogen filling, so let's assume they used helium for the reconstruction. ;)

@threestooges: Well, probably not the right place for asking this question here, but feel free to start a new thread or something. In short, I guess the best way to start is thinking about what you like to do, then look at your existing skills, and check some tutorials for things you want to learn, Also have a close look at existing files, get familiar with the modding tools, and just give it a try. Start with something small, until you feel safe in what you do, then you can expand your skills and knowledge more and more. And don't be shy to ask, I'm sure many people here are glad to provide help. :)

Today's download was created by Temroc again, it's a small Garage Yard, where a coal merchant set up his business, supplying the neighborhood with heating fuel. Properly equipped with some historic truck, coal lumps and time-controlled garage door props, this lot brings some nice variation in historic settings and other places.

Temroc has created a small set of W2W buildings from his hometown Chemnitz, Germany, and the Eckhaus Bretgasse (Bretgasse Corner) is one of them. This download contains both an orthogonal version (modded both as residential and commercial lots), as well as a diagonal version with two different lots, suitable for all intersections.

Unfortunately, Temroc didn't create many buildings, but I think those that he made are real gems. The downloads offer several variations, though, so they add a nice touch to the W2W enviroment. Today's upload is the Römischer Kaiser, another building that has quite an impressive history (see LEX description). It is available in several lot sizes, both as commercial an residential building. Some lots also feature a rear building. :)

As you might have noticed, the SFBT Advent Calendar is taking a little break at the LEX, this is due to our release schedule at the German SimCityKurier, where we're doing a little "Paris special" this week, mostly with the excellent work by Debussyman and xannepan, which you can find at the LEX already. But the SC4D community has been active as well, you'll find some nice little gems that are available already, and more are scheduled soon!

As a follow-up of Temroc's W2W BATs, the SFBT presents another little German W2W set, made by Feindbild. A typical "Gründerzeit" (founder's epoch, also Wilhelminian style) building, which can be found in a similar setting in most German city centers. For more variety, this BAT is also available in three different variants on several lots with or without backyards and rear buildings. They grow on medium-density residential zones only.

You might remember this little MMP set from the STEX, but for the LEX upload, I brushed it up a little with new menu icons and descriptions, so it'll fit in with the other SFBT stuff nicely. The download adds an icon to the Mayor Mode menu that allows you to plop camper and caravan props everywhere in your landscape, allowing custom campground scenes and the like. There are 12 different models included in the sequence.

Withour further ado: Another MMP item that has been released as "Deer and Wild Boars" at the STEX already, updated to fit into the SFBT Collection. The upload adds three menu icons to your Mayor Mode menu, providing a large variety of wild animals, as well as a deer stand for plopping virtually everywhere in your landscape. :)

More MMP goodies coming in! :) Today's upload is a set of Draggable Paths, seven different styles (gravel, sand, paving, tarmac etc.) to pick from the Mayor Mode menu. Simply drag them through the landscape, allowing any curve you like. It might take some trials to get things right, but der Gammler was working hard on finding out the perfect placement patterns for easy use.

The MMP paths have been in "beta" since quite a while alright, so I'm glad to see them finally released to the public as well. Another staple of those wonderful MDs by Framly and Fasan is the Draggable Water a.k.a. Plopwater, which made its way to the STEX some time ago, and which I reworked a little as well for the LEX release. It's not as easy to use as the paths, but as you've seen in said MDs, the results are phenomenal. :)

We'll certainly try our best; many of the files were created a few years ago, but we never forgot about them, and now we finally found some time again to brush them up to the usual SFBT release standards. The following upload is brand new, though, another Paris-themed building by N1_2888, the SFBT Mairie, or "Mayor's Office" in French. N1_2888 originally created it for his Mayor Diary at SimForum, but it turned out so nice that we made a proper release out of it. The Mairie is a reward lot that is triggered when you have more than 2,500 residents, a Mayor Rating of at least 35, and the Mayor's House being present in your city. You can use it instead of the Maxis City Hall, but since there are no further conditions, feel free to use it wherever you like (once unlocked, you can plop it several times, too).

Today we have two gifts! Representing Polish Bat Team (PGB), I'm pleased to annouce that this year we could prepare our own contribution to the Advent Calendar. RaV, one of our users and creators at SimCityPolska, modelled a church from southern Poland.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi443.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq160%2Fkbieniu7%2FBinarowa_icon.jpg&hash=4fc5256fe2c20225d8b4af1b0c2db23babdf1564)

St. Michael Archangel's Church in Binarowa (Southern Poland) is a historical wooden church from the 15th century that is a part of Wooden Architecture Route in Lesser Poland (Małopolska). With other wooden churches from the region it has been designated in 2003 as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We would also like to thank Andreas for his help with modding and publishing the item and inviting us to make a part of the Calendar :)

This is another BAT that has collected dust in the archives for way too long. Roesler Engineering was created by royal many years ago, but there was never a lot for it, until brucie stepped up, creating one that suits the building, which surely will spice up your industrial areas a bit more.

Admittedly, those bland 60's midrises that you can find in virtually any larger city are not the prettiest, but yet they are a staple in any lower wealth neighborhood, hence I really like JohnD's apartment block a whole lot. I wish he made a few more color variations for larger lots, containing several buildings, but it looks nice as a "standalone" as well. For a little more variety, I created two lots with a slightly different lot layout.

These midrises are without any doubt one of my favourites, giving us the "feel" of the sixties and seventies. I wish that there were more varieties of them. They seem to be easily done, maybe after my MFP1 project, I will throw myself into creating some of these. If I could only have a 3ds model from JohnD as a sample.......Again, a great upload and a must have for midsized towns and small cities.

Thanks again for all these gifts !

For all fans of the SFBT large lot series, here's another goodie by JohnD, the  Mayor Kornmesser Apartments. Using both an orthogonal as well as a diagonal version of the building by JohnD, I designed a set of four different lots in total. Using the sizes 4x5 and 5x4, I placed two or three buildings in different configurations on the lots. The usual parking lots, playgrounds and dumpsters suit the layout of the other large lots, as well as the selection of props and textures, so these should fit into your low wealth residential areas nicely.

They might look unimpressive on the screenshots at the first glance, but they can be pretty useful in some occasions: The STR Tunnel Portals by exziviben can be plopped directly "on top" of the Maxis tunnel portal that still shows up when you drag a tunnel with the NAM Single Track Rail, creating the illusion of a single entrance tunnel portal. Depending on the slope of the mountain, parts of the model will disappear inside, you can improve the look with careful manual lifting the terrain, if necessary. :)

If exziviben is still active, tell him thanks from me. These are really useful, esp. given the game's limitations regarding tunnels.

Alas, most of the SFBT members are not active anymore. Some check out Simforum now and then, but I fear that most of them moved on. JohnD isn't around anymore as well, hence it's very unlikely that we'll see more of those apartment blocks either.

Christmas is coming up soon, and naturally, the SFBT stocked up a few more gifts that I'll be releasing over the holidays. Today's item is another BAT by rambuckel, who produced a number of buildings from Scotland. The Sanquhar Tollbooth House dates back to the 18th century. Although it's used as a museum these days, I decided to mod it as a pure landmark, since the number of landmarks that are available as museum or library got a bit excessive. ;) Sadly, this building doesn't have any nightlighting, but since rambuckel isn't around anymore either, I doubt this can be fixed anytime soon.

hello andreas and teh entire SFBT team and guests....

this was an awesome year for gifts and pleasant surprises... namely JohnD... however I must say that last years surprise of EP1 Clayhurst University was the best surprise ever...

my favorite for this year is what Fred aka mrbisonm offered... thanks for the dairy farm [I am saying dairy farm, irregardless of what was intended  ;)]  followed up by royal's work... they do add more variety in teh industrial areas aboutteh railroad...

so here is hoping there will be more next year and that more batters and lotters do come into their own for adding to the city scapes of SC4d

Thank you for a good year  :bnn:

This was an awesome advent calendar  ;D If it was indeed the very last advent calendar conducted by the SFBT team, I guess that next year's edition will need to be well organized to prevent blank days. I certainly will have a few things to share next year if it's necessary, and maybe some nice stuff from formerly active TSC members also ;)
