Comming soon :-)

Antoine

An excellent work my friend  ;) hope to see more !!!

Congratulations on your new thread (I know, it's a week and a half old, but yeah, just found out about it today).

Looking forward to your next project. Ajaccio turned out to be an excellent addition to the LEX!!

The next 16-bit realization will be "Le Bassin d'Arcachon". It is located in the south of France (department of Gironde), on the Atlantic coast. To give you an idea, I took two pictures from Géoportail (http://geoportail.fr):

I believe that we can build beautiful cities on this map because the region is relatively flat.
Well, on this, I will get my .dem files  :)

wouanagaine

Great place to have Hans.

And there are a lot of space to build harbors.

HansTrapp,

Excellent selection for your next project. You are quickly becoming a master, and we can finally get maps from France of excellent quality!!

Do you know of any Government sponsored programs that release 30m DEM data? I know when I searched awhile back, they didn't seem to have any. I cannot translate the french pages that well though...

Anyways, looking forward to see what you have for us later in the week!

I found that for some europeans 30m DEM http://www.suissegeo.ch/autres_pays.php

Looking from others sources, it looks like we can have 75m DEM for any part of France

Pat,
Your coment is welcome, thanks ! Sure, you can follow any further developments, anyone interested is welcome  :)

Let's talk me about this project...

Besk,
The best resolution our goverment program propose are 90m data files, no better quality... I think the french goverment was a little afraid as he saw the bill from the NASA for a better quality (30m)  ;D ... so it is !
We'd spoke about this in a previous post. Sure, the resolution is bad, an example under GM8, hideous:

There is unfortunately no other solution, I have to work till the end with this bad resolution. But Frenchies are very inventive, don't you think so Wouanagaine ?

The SC4Terraformer is a very good tool to erase this imperfections. I use first the "compression tool" after importing my map and then after the "smooth tool" to render the coast. That increase quality:

1) The basis map

2) Using the "compressor tool":

3) then after, using the "smooth tool":

"French-hand-make-maps" !
I  don't know if the translation is correct... lol
;)

May be there is another solution to smooth the coast. If Moganite could provided a mathematic solution to this "coast smooth problem", I'll take it promptly  ;)

Wouanagaine : http://www.suissegeo.ch/autres_pays.php is a good source, but they do not offer a wide choice of french maps.

Besk: if you have some problem with french translation, I can try to help you, but I warn you, my english is'nt from the hight school...

See you
Hans

HansTrapp,

You use many of the same techniques as I use when making shorelines on 90m maps in SC4TF. You pay even more attention to the details than I do! Your coastlines come out looking natural and realistic. Ajaccio has turned out fantastic from the region view, but if you open up each city tile, the cities look magnifique!

For France, I can't imagine what the bill for 30m data is. In Canada, it is a multi-million dollar project.

I will message moganite to see if he may have a solution to auto-smooth coastlines. I'm sure there is something that may be able to be worked out.

wouanagaine has shown a site that allows 75m for France, which is only a slight improvement over 90m... It may not be worth it.

Je ne comprende pas les Francais a bon!! But I try!

Great job, looking forward to testing your new map!

beskhu3epnm, do you have a URL for the canadian 30M data.  I have been struggling to get good data for the Pontiac region of Western Québec.

This is the spot!! 30m data is equivalent to 1:50,000. You will have to register to access the files. They are free, though!

Many thanks. Saved the link for when I have some time to play with it, hopefully on the weekend.

Hey, if you ever want some useful links on NHP's color 16bit mapping, just drop me a line some time. We set Hans up nicely!

the 16bit mapping will get the most out of 30m data... The old way just doesn't seem to cut it all that well...

A little bump, maybe HansTrapp would find this useful:

Try Water Erosion in the Zone Tools menu, the results are quite good. It smooths the coast, but gives it a more natural feel.
