  • Iron Hook Cape (Cape - NW, SE and SW Quads Diddicks Twp, NW and NE Quads Iron Hook Township and NE Quad Pine Cone Township  - lat. 94° 47' 23" N / lon. 48° 43' 37" W (area center))  Iron Hook Cape is a cape extending into the Hotham Inlet of Lake of the Woods measuring 7,900 acres/3,200 hectares in total area.  The cape extends out into the waters of the lake about five miles/eight kilometers to the SSW and then curves and extends another 1.6 miles/2.6 kilometers almost due west.  The waters enclosed by the cape are referred to as Diddicks Bay, and the origin of this name is not known.  The cape is apparently named after its shape and began appearing on maps of the area in the 1830s.  It is geologically glacial in origin, and consists of very sandy soils covering a spine of cobble deposited as a moraine.  There are also a number of granite pediments, most notably Nike Site Point and Haystack Rock located at the end of the cape.  The northern landward end of the cape is generally considered to be between the mouth of the Des Plaines River to the west and the mouth of Redfox Creek to the east.  The cape is drained by a number of very small streams: the two largest are Truro Creek and Strechnitz Creek.  The cape is sparsely settled historically and remains so today.  Ellisport, a city at the south end of the cape, has a population (2000) of a little over 2,000.  Truro, an unincorporated area on the west side of the cape about midway up, has a population (2000) of less than 200.  Several hundred more live in widely spread rural homes and the cape's few farms.  Iron Hook Cape's sandy soil is not well-suited for large-scale agricultural purposes by comparison to lands in the rest of the region and main road down the cape, Regional Route 9, was not paved until the 1950s.  Since the 1980s, though, a number of small specialty farms have been established in the southernmost one-third of the cape.  By and large, the remainder of the cape remains heavily wooded, and as a result extremely scenic.  The cape has been a popular tourist destination and summer home location since the mid-20th Century, and the shoreline of Diddicks Bay, in particular, is lined with small resort and family cabins.  The local population has become increasing resistant to development over the past 20 years, however, and this has slowed, but not halted, the construction of the more modern and upscale mega-resort and McMansion-style properties.

  • Marchand (City - SW Quad Taylor Twp - lat. 49° 10' 02" N / lon. 95° 17' 55" W - elev. 857 ft/261 m amsl.)  Marchand is a charter city located in the northwest quadrant of the region about 20 miles/32 kilometers from downtown Pineshore.  It is located on the western shore of Lower Taylor Lake, and is the traditional "jumping-off point" for recreation in the Taylor Lakes area.  The city takes its name from Frederick Marchand, an early principal in organizing the Duluth, Winnipeg & Western ("DW&W") railroad line.  Population (2000 census): 5,886.  Local Government:  Mayor, 5 member City Council.  Police and Fire:  Regional Trooper Post #11, Rural Fire Service Station #8.  Medical Services:  Trauma Center, For-profit hospital (Marchand General) and associated clinics, privately run open to public emergency care facility.  Postal Service:  Rural Postal Station #3.  Air Service:  General aviation, runway length 2,000 ft/610 m grass.  Rail Service:  None.  Marchand is home to the District Court, Northwest Judicial District.  History and General Information:  Frederick Marchand established a family "camp" in this last settled area of 3RR in the mid-1870s, with access being by a five mile/eight kilometer boat trip from Wood Ridge, a DW&W stop on the eastern shore of Upper Taylor Lake.  By 1890, the camp had been turned into a substantial home, around which grew up Marchand's downtown.  In 1895, when the region was divided into judicial districts, Marchand was selected as the site for the Northwest Judicial District's courthouse, and an imposing stone building was constructed for that and other local purposes on a site overlooking the city.  The city was issued its municipal corporation charter in 1897.  It had long been Frederick Marchand's dream to build a DW&W spur to serve the town and the surrounding heavily timbered area, but this never came to pass.  Marchand died unexpectedly on December 31, 1899, in the final hours of the 19th Century, and the idea of a rail connection to the town that bears his name died with him.  The road that became R-13 when the current route numbering scheme was adopted by 3RRDOT was paved from Brooks Ferry north to Marchand in the early 1920s, and an extension of the F-37 freeway is currently proposed to reach the city in 2015.  The Marchand home burned to the ground in 1951, and its former lawn is now Lakeshore Park.  In the 1960s, the growth of small resorts and guest cottage operations threatened to completely obliterate the theretofore largely undeveloped shores around both Taylor Lakes.  These led to the passage of the first "viewshed" preservation laws in 3RR- a practice widely in use throughout the region by the 1980s.  In the 1990s, protection of the unspoiled natural quality of the lakes was enhanced by the purchase of numerous conservation easements by the Marchand Foundation, a not-for-profit established by Frederick Marchand's heirs for the purpose of "preserving natural values in the Taylor Lakes area."  Today, Marchand is a gem of a small city, with a thriving tourism and sport-fishing based economy.

MAH-REE-AHS) River, which is about 14 miles/22 km in length and feeds Grand Lake from the north, is a rather plain and homely river that appears to be one of the innumerable waterways in the northern great plains that an early settler named for the girl back home.  Either that, or for his cow.

It takes a north to south path and its mouth is located just north of a tiny isolated cove popular with students. Gaston, an early settler and farmer in the Twin Glacier Valley.  Reportedly, Gaston raised crops for a few hard years then told friends he was leaving the region and going back to Iowa because it was "too d-mn cold."  This is commemorated on 3RR Historical Marker No. 197, located at milepost ___ along R-___.

  • Mount Steffen (Mountain - SE Quad DeLong Twp - lat. 48° 56' 17" N / lon. 95° 11' 30" W - elev. ___ ft/___ m amsl.)  Mount Steffen is one of the major landforms in the DeLong Mountains.  It is named for local landowner and 3RR's first dentist D. T. Steffen, who was actually not the man he appeared.  Steffen practiced from the same small offices in Pineshore from the early 1990s until shortly before his death in 1972, developing a clientele that not only came from every corner of the region but from as far away as Winnepeg and Duluth.  Beloved by his patients and colleagues alike, many were quite amused to learn in the late 1990s that "D. T." Steffen was actually his brother Ulysses, who had no dental training at all.  As it turns out, Ulysses was a Texas Ranger until the day he learned of the untimely death of his brother, the real D. T., who passed away in Superior, Wisconsin while enroute to setting up his practice in Pineshore.  D. T. had just received his diploma, in those days before accreditation, following six months of study at the Southeastern Ohio College of Dentistry and Mortuary Sciences.  Without a second look, Ulysses left his horse, badge and six-shooter, caught the first train north, arrived in Superior long enough to bury his brother, pick up D. T.'s diploma, bag of dental tools, and ticket to Pineshore.  He never looked back, and the only reason the true story ever came to light was that Steffen himself left a letter telling the story in a Pineshore safe deposit box with instructions that it would only be opened and read 25 years after his death.

  • Murphy Creek (Stream - NW, SW and SE Quads Dutchman Twp - lat. 48° 46' 16" N / lon. 95° 11' 25" W (mouth) Map key 8-D)  Murphy Creek is a 5.9 mile/9.5 kilometers long stream rising in Minnesota just south of the 3RR-US border.  From the border, it flows 5.1 miles/8.3 kilometers in a north-northwesterly direction across Dutchman Township to Devil's Elbow Bend of the South Fork of the Wind River 10.6 miles/17 kilometers from that river's mouth at Barrett Lake.  The creek is named for an early landowner, F. M. Murphy, in the area.  Metcalfe Spring, a large artesian spring, flows into Murphy Creek at the base of a large rock outcrop 4.3 miles/seven kilometers from its mouth.
