Rail yard textures for the Real Railway
I have started this thread to gauge the interest in making Real Railway (RRW) Rail yard textures that would be an alternative to using NCD's Rail yard textures which are based on the MAXIS rail. This set would look RRW like and would give lot creators an option to make RRW compatible rail yards and hopefully pick up the use of the RRW.
Here are some preliminary images of track switches I have made...

Rail YardNow this is only the beginning. I am primarily starting this thread to get ideas for track that can be included into the texture pack.
So...
what type of track would you like in this texture pack? I'm interested in the opinions of lot creators and others since you will be lotting and using the new texture pack respectively for your purposes.
I am happy to hear any thoughts about this project.

I would like to finish this with the new RRW textures
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19293845/Images/Textures_pb.jpg)
I have thought about doing this myself, currently the lack of such a pack is a large part of the reason why I'm still using an older Rail Style. In an ideal world, an override set with the same pieces and IID's of the original packs (so that old lots would just show the new RRW if the mod was installed) would be the best way of doing this. However, I'm not sure how possible that would be with the differing track geometry in terms of ensuring such lots would still look right with wagons and trains etc.

Making a pack to override NCD's textures is not something I am looking to do at this stage. The new pack that I am making would be an alternative set. While it is possible to make an overriding set it would be more troublesome than its worth. I don't even know if I'm even allowed to use NCD's texture range (I'm going to play it safe and assume not). So new lots would have to be made. At this stage I am just gathering ideas and making the applicable track. I do however plan to make alternatives for most of the textures that NCD made.
Thanks for all the feedback so far. It is looking like that I should be able to make the applicable textures not before too long depending on my RL schedule.

I would certainly welcome Real Railway railyard textures. In addition to major railyards it would enable the construction of smaller sets of sidings, which are much more common. I would be in favour of a component system rather than massive preconstructed yards. I have to confess that I have not calculated how many different components might be necessary, allowing for flipping and mirroring textures.

All the textures will be modular ;) . The images that I am posting are just overviews. I will try to arrange the texture IIDs as such as that they correspond to a certain group of textures.
So don't worry. Weather you want either a small siding or a large Railyard, my hope is to make them all possible.
-eggman121
looks good ;D
Oh yes, certainly!
I don't have an overview of what is needed for a good railyard, but I suppose others can give info on that. Anyway: the textures are great and so I am glad that you are going to expand the set with several new textures for different configurations. &apls
Yes! Yes! Yes! I'll contribute some idea when I have a bit more time
Hi eggman!
First thing I have to say is: I very appreciate your work on a texture set for railyards. I tried it by myself, but making textures needs passion I don´t have. &apls
I did some lotting with NCD´s sets earlier, and I think, I can give some good advices, what would be needed. There are differences between European and US-American railyards, and NCD´s sets were made for US American railways only. If you want, I can send you some drawings, what I mean. If your set will be complete (not like the never finished NCD textures), then I would be very interested to make lots with it. ()stsfd()
Especially I would prefer overlays instead of base textures, then a set also wouldn´t need that many different parts and combining would be easier.
But enough for now, only a big thank you for this absolute hard but stunning work you do!

Sorry, meant "suggestions" instead of "advice", as I am a totally rail nerd and a humble English speaker... ;)
I have one question: Do you have any textures for lotting purposes? I would like to try to build stations and spur lines with the new ones. Currently I am still playing with the old ones, but as soon as your draggable RRW will be published it would be nice to have some lots also.
Thanks in advance...
RRW railyard textures would be most welcome and these look great &apls
Are you planning on 3 rails per tile or 4? RRW geometry seems to favor 3 but I'm not too sure. There's definitely no obstacle to you making overrides of existing textures. I've been making them here and there, mainly just when Arthur has ones he needs for a station bat. I think a whole new set would be ideal but it'd definitely be useful to have replacement ones as well. It would be tricky to do highly modular yards as opposed to larger prefab ones given the limitations with adjacent te lots.

Thanks for the feedback Noah
I will be putting four tracks max onto a single tile. I have decided to update
NCD's Texture pack to RRW specification to make the current lots compatible with the RRW.
Yes three tracks would be sensible but If a wider Gauge was able to be used on a single tile than four track would also suffice.
Sorry about the long inactive time on this thread &mmm
I have been busy in both RL and on other projects.
-eggman121
That's fantastic if you want to update NCD's pack eggman! There's way too many textures in that thing, I don't want to touch it with a ten foot pole.
I understand why many people want the automatic conversion; so many lots already use those textures. Willy and I were working to develop some new rail hump yards based on real life designs and specs, here's what those are gonna look like:
Those look awesome Indiana Joe! Are they overlay textures? I'd love to play around with those
Look amazing indeed. Also great news NCD's textures will be updated! &apls
<Clean up in Aisle 3>
Seriously, those rail tracks are amazing!
I concur with the above, serious wows @ those textures :o
(though imo the repetition with that imperfection between the double y is maybe distracting?)
Amazing job ;)
I agree with Joest regarding the repetition of imperfection
Those look fantastic
Great work IJ
Thanks for all the positive comments on this thread. Work is keeping me busy but I am slowly but surely putting a rail texture Pack together for the RRW.
In addition as some of you may Know I have taken over the Working of the RRW which will surpass all the puzzle piece equivalents.
Here is my latest track work ;D

If any member has an Idea for a track section I am all for you to show me and I will try to make a RRW equivalent.
Saying that I hope to make the RRW the main rail type from possibly NAM 34 on wards.
Thank you for all the interest in the projects I am helping out on.
Can't wait to see some of the new track in your cities! $%Grinno$%
-eggman121
This stuff is just incredible!!!!
Just wonderful work of both of you, Indiana Joe and eggman121! &apls
But I agree with JoeST about the imperfect double-y in the upper section. This only would make sense, if there is a hump (and this maybe would need more place then we still have on a big tile... $%Grinno$%)

Not only too much texture parts, also NCD never finished the second set, that uses slim switches. I tried to build railyards with it, some of them you can see in my lost MD Waldey, another attempt was this one:

Compared with NCD´s railyards this one is just huge, although I only built a really small one. It´s counterpart in RL is somewhere near Ypsilanti,MI (and it isn´t a scale version, also not a complete copy of the original, cause it was made to match into it´s surrounding environment).
Now to my humble two cents:
I don´t think, that it would make sense to simply override NCD´s textures. On the last picture you can see why. If we want to use realistic switch ankles (right word?), these old railyards simply are outdated. I for my would prefer more realistic dimensions, and it may be some work to change lots (industrials and freight yards) using railyard textures, but it would look much better, if these lots would become overworked with better switches - although some of them would need to be made as new lots...
Also - the railyard on my pictures is made as one lot. NCD did something much more intelligent, when he made his set modular.
I am only doing lots until today, so I have really no clue, if it would be possible or useful to make railyards as puzzle pieces or draggable. But I would be happy to build with the new textures. For me RRW is THE revoluton in SimCity4.
The thing about an override for the original textures is that a large number of lots exist which use NCDs textures, it's the defacto standard for railyards and sidings. Having to re-lot every single one in reality means many will remain unchanged (out of date), but worse still users who don't lot themselves will be stuck with mismatching lots. In the sense that it would enable lots of existing content to conform to the RRW standards, I'd personally prefer to see things done this way. Bear in mind also that if suitable replacement textures don't exist for a particular piece, it wouldn't be possible to update some lots either.
That said, the inherent problem here is that the RRW uses a different gauge so those old lots won't look perfect no matter what you do. I think some changes around the switches could probably happen without affecting existing lots too much, it's the sections where railcars and the like reside that need to line up similarly.
There is no real benefit to making railyards as puzzle pieces, in fact since you can't place MMPs or props on such pieces (OK, you could T21 them, but that's a whole can of worms there), you don't really end up with anything more than sidings.
Whatever happens, I'm sure there would be some railyards released to support RRW, but given that the number of people working on mods recently seems to be even smaller than ever, it's unlikely that would lead to the variety of lots that once were.
Well I have been at work at updating some of NCD's textures to RRW Standards.
Alpha Phase results! ;D

Some color correction (Hopefully there is a batch Script for that) and some aligning of the Rails as you can notice in the second picture.
So, Apart from the NCD textures, Are there any other texture packs out there??? %confuso
I know there are some texture packs for the orthogonal Rail texture that is used on some LOTs
So hopefully the RRW can become the standard of Rail for SC4 ;D For that to happen though there will need to be packs of textures that will blend in nicely with the current RRW textures. That will be key for that to happen!
-eggman121
Excellent stuff, thanks for doing this the hard way, it's much more beneficial overall. Whilst I'm sure there are plenty of other rail textures out there, with NCD's packs covered I think there is no need to worry too much about further replacements. It covers most of the setups I think people could conceivably need.
Thanks mgb204
I still have some work to do in this space and it was hard work to update the textures but my hope will be that there will be much for of an uptake for the RRW! Due to logistics I will only be focusing my efforts for the RRW as far as rail is concerned.
There are still some people at ST that want Flextrack to be made at the old standard. Well since the paths have to be adjusted that is not going to happen. So what is spurring me with this effort is to convert the unconverted to the RRW.
Making textures for already released LOTs should make for an easy change too the RRW.
-eggman121
You are doing an excellent job Stephen! &apls
I think I've never commented anything here, but I have to say the job you're doing is truly amazing!! Please never stop!! &apls
That look fantastic! &apls
WMP also has made quite a bit of rail textures for (http://workingman-productions.co.uk/downloads/wmp_rdock_freight.html) example (http://workingman-productions.co.uk/downloads/wmp_railferries.html) which might be worth considering.
Well, time to wear the bib again....

Excellent work Stephen! There are a number of lots that I have been wanting to create (historic stockyard, for one), but the lack of RRW textures has dissuaded me. Looks like that won't be a problem now

Great textures!
Hi Stephen and thank you for replying on the NAM thread.
I have already been working with the 40 RRW overlay textures available here and I have already re-textured a few station/freight yards.
I'm hoping when you have a more comprehensive set that you will share it with us :) so that we can start the process before NAM34 ;D
You sir have done a fantastic job so far &apls

Well even with the limited 40 RRW textures available the results are not too shabby.
I went ahead and re-lotted/texured a few rail yards.
I apologize for the poor presentation.

Oh very nice Simmer2
Great results!
I don't know the exact rules but I think they are ok for personal use. Just don't upload them without the authors expressed permission!
I am aiming to avoid the re lotting issue by updating the texture packs. That way there won't be problems with re lotting the LOTs.
-eggman121
Nice work &apls. As Stephen mentioned, hopefully what you've is overwrite the textures instead of re-lot as it's much easier for other users to update that way--no need to download a bunch of modified lots and then re-plop them.
As for permissions, the only thing needed is for the RRW texture, which has been expressly given so you're good to go. While you have the right to distribute them yourself, it will be easier for users if we combine our rrw texture packs so people don't need to find a bunch of different ones.
Ok
I now have been working on an update for the NCD texture pack. None of this would have been possible without Rivit's (Ron's) Texture Bender tool and GoFSH
So a big thankyou! to him ()flower()
Ok here are the results

This is just one pack of many that I will be updating so stay tuned for more!

I am totally wowed. :bnn:
I remember me asking for something like this some time ago, and different from what I´ve heard then, there will be an override for NCD´s wonderful textures. I am much more than only pleased, cause his work was not only the first attempt to build real railyards, it also was a very clever made set with a lot of oppertunities. I really would have missed it, and the use of his stations was a serious reason to avoid RRW for now.
Luckily this will have an end.
So you deserve a KP... :)
great stuff Eggman and thanks for the plug. These are indeed epic sets of great utility (and size)
You'll be pleased to know that I've made a significant start on all of the Doc Rorlach Lot rail textures - since I made the originals I figured I should do the RRWs of them. About 80% through them now.
It is my intent to make them a part of RRW for RUM v4 to coincide with the next RRW release.
Awesome stuff Stephen &apls
Cheers to both of you (Eggman and Rivit)...
I'm sure that making a huge bunch of existing content compatible with RRW will be of huge benefit to everyone. Not to mention giving us yet more textures for new projects too. I know the packs by NCD are not exactly small, so all your hard work is really appreciated. Hopefully this will encourage some hold outs to convert to RRW too.
Great work, Eggman.
Rivit: Good to hear
Sweet, I've been wondering if someone would create an "update" for NCD's rail textures, as it seems to be a logical step, considering how often they were used on various rail lots. Looking great so far! :)
really think this is an awesome project, updating all t eh rails to RRW-texture spec...
luv the transformation with NWG rail sites... its a well done in progress
is there a plan as to how or when the updated textures will be bundled?... ???
standing-by, watching the progress
'nough said for now :satisfied:
Thank you all for the kind comments and Thank you carlfatal for the KP! $%Grinno$%
Here are some more teasers for the NCD RRW Texture pack. Took a bit of wrangling but I think it is worth the wait ;D

Now for the packaging stuff. Is there anyone out there that can write a Cleanitol File for replacing the NCD Maxis Texture packs with the NCD RRW texture packs?
Both texture packs have been overwritten.
That said these are not yet complete in the way that there are some Lots that use mix and match texture sets. Some are from BSC and I do not intend to re release already released work asides from editing the textures in question. So they will have to load last.
Keen to hear thoughts.

I've never had occasion to make a cleanitol file. But I don't think it's anything much more than a .txt file containing the filenames of what is being replaced. Check out an existing one, there is nothing especially complex going on there so far as I can see.
Great to see the new textures :). If I can help you with packaging or anything, just let me know.
Ok I have uploaded the NCD BSC Update Texture pack for the RRW.

You´re my hero! From today on I´ll play with RRW! A huge, huge thank you! &apls &apls &apls
That's impressive amount of work &apls Thank you very much!
Amazing, thank you!
Its finally a reality!
Well done Stephen &apls

Thanks for a great job on a much needed project! It really opens up a whole world of content to RRW players.
I think I found a tiny bug - in the LEX download's Readme, it says:
QuoteBoth the Original BSC Texture Packs can be Literally replaced.
(*)The BSC Texture Pack is still needed since only a few textures where updated! So Please keep this file in
your plugins folder!
Seems the first reference is meant to be to the two NCD texture files.
As pointed out already, the Cleanitol file is just a .txt file named something descriptive, like "RailyardTexturesRRW_Remove.txt" containing names of files to be removed, sans file extension. Example:
Railyard Texture Mega-Pack Vol 1
And another line for whatever the other file name is - I don't have it installed to refer to.
Thanks again, really stellar release! :bnn:
It will be nice to finally be seeing the proper textures on railyards. Do these textures simply override NCD's textures on every lot that uses them?

They do indeed. The results are quite nice, especially for simpler lots:

I've had some issues with more complex or unrealistic layouts on certain lots. I wonder about the possibility of further overrides, although it seems some lots just won't ever work well with RRW due to insanely tight curves.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone :)
I have not had a chance to answer any questions due to RL.
Yes both the packs should override the textures that are part of the NCD Texture packs and I am so glad people are picking this package up.
The packaging was done in a bit of haste so I do apologize there. This package would not have been possible without mgb204 and Rivit's help! It was a major undertaking to make these textures since there was some width change that added to the complexity. I do plan to update more texture pack quite comprehensively in the future.
But for now enjoy ;D

I know I had one lot that really didn't work right, but I couldn't find it! So enjoy these pictures of working lots instead. &apls
Excellent! &apls
"Золотая бочка"?! :o
Here is one lot that doesn't translate very well - so far, the only one - Newman Inc Grain Warehouse and Shipping:
Check out the funky diagonal spur on right side edge, this doesn't seem to be part of the original layout as it's not transit-enabled. it's totally part of the original layout
In any case, most of the railcars on the lot aren't grain-related anyway, including the ones being filled with grain, so re-lotting is probably the best option...
Edit: After further investigation, it seems this lot depends on version 1 of the NCD textures, the pre-2007 version. So it's really remarkable that this patch works at all!
For comparison, here's the version with minimum original dependencies, ready for the lot editor:
Note the non-TE diagonal spur at lot edge is original to the layout.
Hello CT14.
That lot is on my to do list.
The one I'm making will be without the canal props.

That's great! I'm already working on a different style of grain elevator lot, so I guess I can leave this one alone.
Probably the biggest takeaway here is that some lots still use the NCD version 1 textures, not the currently available 1.02, and there may be glitches on those lots.
Thanks CT14 for the input.
Indeed the patch works but with the geometry changed on some pieces It is hard to get the pieces to behave properly with the intricate setup that is shown on this Lot.
I did do extensive testing but this Lot may have escaped.
I can see that the original creator may have had great trouble getting the configuration right for the textures.
That being said, I would wait for Simmer2 to present a comparable Lot.
Thanks for digging this up

Tentative results. Took me about two days to get to this stage.
Nick (Simmer2) I hope you are reading this. With your help your textures are next ;)

Hey, those are looking really great and will be useful in a number of lots! In preview #2 above, I see a little glitch at the switch to the right of the BN hoppers.
