Title: BigBerta - Officially dead :(
Post by: bigberta on November 22, 2007, 01:21:21 AM
All right, im back!
It's been a while... Let's not get into why it's been a while :) Bottom line is, I'm back!

Ok, this MD will be kind of a mixed bag. I'm trying lots of different things. Lately I've been building another European themed city, but in the future I hope to share some of my other projects.

Don't expect this to be regularly updated... I will update when I have the time and right now, there is a severe lack of time...
That being said, I hope I will have the time to update this more frequently in the future.

So, without further ado, I bring you the first pictures (these make heavy use of prepos diagonals):

Ok, that's it for this time. Bye for now

It's great to see so many diagonal lots together.  :)

I especially like the 2nd pic, there are so many different angles there, nicely planned and executed

Looking forward to more

Cheers

The pictures are very nice and it seems you put a lot of time into this. However I do feel that I'm missing a background story of this town...

Thats a great start to your MD, I really like your use of diagonals and the courtyards in the middle of some of them!  &apls

I'm going to send you my eye doctor's bill, because that eye candy is eroding my retinas!!  :D Beautiful shots. Your editing skills are pretty good too. It would be nice to have some background though (don't mind me jumping on your bandwagon, capo) Keep up the excellent work.

Great pictures, and beauftifull city Bigberta. I agree with the guys above me ( ;))  that a little more info with them would give it just a bit more than just a showcase - for example tell us why you made a corner like you did, or how the pics fix in a larger planning of your city.

Update 1

Well, I have the day off :D That gives me the time I so desperately need to update this MD.

Since so many of you want a background story to the pictures, I'll try to provide you with one.

The city I'm currently working on is a european city. I'm going for a northern/central european feeling (not necessarily swedish :))
It was named Clinton (after my dog actually) and is located on a plain with a river running trough it (much like the city I currently live in by the way, Örebro). It is divided into south and north side by the river running through the city centre.
It is primarily a commercial center, although it has it's fair share of industry (will be covered in a future update).
It is an old city, built in the typical european wall-to-wall style. Because of it's old age, the commercial buildings are mostly dual-purpose buildings, housing both stores/offices and residents. As a result, there is no real commercial center. It is scattered over the central parts of the city.
Lately some of the older buildings have had to make way for more modern comercial ones. This gives a mixture of old and new in some parts of the city.
It has a reasonably developed subway- and bus-system.

The first update was focused on residential neighbourhoods jsut outside the city center.
This second update shows similar areas, but also shows the hospital and parts of the city center.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg222.imageshack.us%2Fimg222%2F6302%2F38334512cd0.jpg&hash=c9ec43a028b8358894a74b1cda3614b4dc316531)
The hospital, situated on the northern shore of the river

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg230.imageshack.us%2Fimg230%2F4241%2F93061856hp5.jpg&hash=d7feff1d0939ed159575fcc893ea236dfe0d9d96)
The avenue on the bottom is one of the main roads in the city. This particular avenue runs from west to east on the northern side of the river. There are many popular shops along the road and it's especially popular among the rich. Actually the neighbourhood in general is a rich one.
You can also see a park where the rich people get their game on :)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg219.imageshack.us%2Fimg219%2F3540%2F95539453pf5.jpg&hash=90a648fbe08310f8a94cad1f082b8cae94495fc8)
Somewhat similar to the previous picture. This is on the south side. It also features an avenue that runs from west to east, but this is mostly a residential area. The basketball courts in the park indicate that this area might not be as rich. But don't be fooled... This is one of the oldest parts of the city and it is very popular among the rich.

That concludes this update, hope you enjoyed it.

Great update.  I reallylike your use of the diagonal buildings.  Now I just wish someone would make some more North American looking ones.   ;)
If I could make one suggestion, it would be for you to get your self a side walk modd.  It would get rid of the different colour sidewlks.  jeronij (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=115) and SFBT (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1196) have made really good ones.  Check them out when you have a chance.  I use jeronij's if you want to look at my MD.
Anyways, great work and I'll be following this one.

Teaser - suburbs

It's update time again. This will just be a teaser I'm afraid, only two pictures.
The pictures are the first of hopefully many depicting suburbs in the city of Clinton.

But first..

Replies:

rooker1 - Thanks for your nice comments. I too wish there were more american style diagonals available. I guess we'll just have to keep hoping :) About the sidewalks; I use jeronij street side mod as well, but I still get differnet sidewalk textures. Any ideas?

bat - Thank you :) Kind as always.

Adept2Rock - Thanks, I'm really glad you like it.

Jmouse - Hey, I'm not that clever :) but I'm glad you like it. I hope you enjoy this small update too. Thanks.

And now, the pictures:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg67.imageshack.us%2Fimg67%2F8601%2F50002304yn9.jpg&hash=f2298eec558691344b40af58d9be0871912a7a0e)
Shot of a suburb in the south of the city. This area is more or less an update of the area that won me my first (and so far only) entry in the picture competition hall of fame. One of the main roads runs from north to south just outside the left edge of this picture.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg134.imageshack.us%2Fimg134%2F7597%2F27735009cy3.jpg&hash=53c48a0a08d33431c75880be6d93660712b4f402)
The same area, but a different angle

Ok, like i said, this is just a teaser. Another real update will be coming soon.
Cheers

Very realistic pictures of any European suburb. I can name you two area's in my hometown that almost look exactly like you build them, very good work, I'm really impressed.

I also very much like the choice of your buildings, of many I wonder where you got them from...

I'ts nice to see all of your nice comments, thanks to all.

@ metasmurf - Man tackar :) Jag är inte helt säker tyvärr. Jag vet att de kommer från nån polsk sc4-site, men jag minns inte vad den heter eller adressen... Hoppas att du kan lyckas hitta dom ändå...

@ ejc  - I'm glad you like my MD. Like I just told metasmurf in my native tounge :) I'm not really sure... I know I got them of some polish site, but I'm too stupid to remember it's name. I really wish I could be more helpful. I promise to let you know if I find out.

@ capo - Thanks :) I might be able to tell you where I got the buildings if you let me know which ones you are wondering about.

I havent had alot of time to play the game lately, but I hope to be able to do so again soon.
Until then, Ciao

Update

It's time to show you some more suburbs.
I don't have time for an elaborate speech right now, so I'll just get to it.

These are all pictures from parts of Clinton. Enjoy!

Looking great! The bikepaths really fit this enviroment and maybe a few more roundabouts would be a nice addition? seeing how many of those there building in Sweden nowadays, and they really fit into this type of enviroment aswell.

Jmouse - I think that they're just static landmarks, but in real world I guess they would be both C and R

bat - Thank you very much

Xiziz - Tack tack. Du har helt rätt i rondellerna och det finns faktiskt en hel del rondeller i mina städer. Jag har bara inte tagit med bilder på nån av dem :)
Translated: Thank you. You are completely right about the roundabouts and there are actually plenty of roundabouts in my cities. I just havent included any of them :)

Suplado - Many thanks my friend. I agree that the houses are great.

Adept2Rock - Thank you. I didn't know that. I'm not really sure if we have a word for it in swedish... Maybe one of my fellow swedes could help out? :)

sauron620 - Thanks. This is turning into a french class all of a sudden :)

Mulefisk - Humble thanks. That was actually the feeling I was going for. Well its the feel I'm going for now anyway :)

warconstruct - Merci :)

Heblem - Many thanks.

nova vestfalo - Thank you very much. I hope you'll enjoy this as well.

And now for the actual update.

The last two pictures of my last update featured an area around a small train station. The area was originally supposed to be a part of the city of Clinton from the previous update. However... It has since evolved into a full fledged city of its own. The name of the new city is Dustry. Its an industrial city. (Hence the name:))

It too is divided by a river, but this river runs north-south.
This city is less scandinavian and more central european in its feel.

This first batch of pictures shows the eastern part of the city.

Loooking at your pictures and suburbs is like reading an interesting book with a thrilling main story. Thanks for addding these little pieces of back ground information: it make the whole MD just perfect  &apls &apls

Your suburbs do also remind me a lot of my own town, like others said before. There is a general european feeling in them. Some of the pictures could have been taken here in Amsterdam-West just as you made them!

I love that white housing block with the red roof. I hope you can find out which one that is as I love it - and MUST have it in my cities....

Edit:
OK -while I was reading and commenting you updated with that great last update of Dustry  :P
Those pictures are just as awesome as all yours are always, and again those great apartment blocks. Very realistic.

Mysigt och som sagt, typiskt Europeiskt, något som alltid ser lika spännande ut i en simulator gord för att bygga amerikanskstilade städer. Cyckelvägarna passar utmärkt in och den nya tågstationen passar också in bättre än den förra!
-||-
Nice and Cozy, typical European, something thats allways as exciting to look at in a simulator made to build americanstyled cities. The Biciclepaths fits perfectly into the city and the new trainstation fits even better than the last one.

Cheers

Hi all!

I hope you've all had a great time during the holiday season. I have been visiting my parents and just got home yesterday. I haven't been able to play the game during that time, it's been really hectic. I plan to pick up the game in the following days, but until then I'd just like to reply to all your great comments.

Replies:
sebes - Thank you very much. The suburbs were actually created using some of the suburbs in my home city as reference.
like this area called Tybble, not far from where I live:

Your work is fantastic BigBerta. I love your attention to detail. You've photoshopped the color it seems also. I love the effect.

Title: Official death :(
Post by: bigberta on February 19, 2008, 01:46:58 AM
First of all I'd like to thank everyone who has ever viewed or commented my MD. I know some people were hoping for an update soon,  but, alas, it brings me great sadness to announce the official death of this MD...
The reason for this is that I recently moved away from the hell that is windows and made the transition to linux instead. Now this obviolusy presents a problem since I can't play Simcity in linux. Well actually I can using Wine or Cedega, but if I add any plugins at all, the game wont start. And it can only be run in software mode, and where's the fun in that?  :)

So until I can run simcity in linux, with plugins, or I get a mac :), there will not be any new MDs from me.

So, thanks to everone again, I hope to be able to pick up the game again soon.
Love Gustaf

Sorry to hear the bad news, Gustaf. Why not post this in one of the support forums - maybe here and at ST - and see if there are others who have had this problem and solved it.

Until next time...
Joan

I have a "solution" of sorts.... its a bit extreme, but if you get Virtual Box or a similar Emulator you can run real Windows on it... bit naff considering you just escaped it, but it works for things like SimCity and office things...

also have you tried running it in OpenGL? you might be able to get these drivers

Thanks for the kind words. I have an ATI-card. I also heard somewhere that it should be possible to get hardware mode working using a card from Nvidia. But the hardware mode isn't really my biggest problem. I would play it in software mode if I could only load all my plugins. The only thing I'd have to live with if I ran in it software mode would be slightly undetailed shadows. But right now, I can only load a few plugins, too many and it wont start.
I guess I'll just have to wait until they improve the wine-engine.
Or dual-boot with windows, but that really is a last resort...

Thanks for the tip, strange how I never thought of that :). That would probably work, but I still wouldn't be able to get hardware mode working, since VirtualBox doesn't give the guest OS access to the actual hardware. Well not yet anyway. But, it's definitely something I'll have to try. I might get the plugins to work.
I tried to run in Opengl mode, but it's really not playable.

That is very sad. I loved your pictures - each and every one of them... Hope one of the above tips will help you in being able to game again.

If not: I did not play myself for almost a year now  ()sad()  But thanks to this site you can still feel connected with the game as if your are playing it yourself. Hopefully I will be playing myself again soon and can only hope the same will be the case for you Gustaf.

Greetz from Amsterdam,
Sebes

Sorry to hear of your troubles, bigberta. I'll move your MD to the Inactive section for now, but if you get things up and running, just send me a PM and we'll get it back into the Active forums.

Good luck, my friend!
