Title: Crushedcar's Random BAT's
Post by: crushedcar on January 06, 2009, 06:28:18 AM
It's been a while since I did any serious BATing, but I've started playing SC4 again. The works I present here are just the ones that have passed my random doodling stage and have a chance of being completed. Here is the first one.

Ok, I haven't posted in a while, but I do have some stuff to show now. The building above (Iris Capitol Building as per my planned CJ/MD) is in the detailing stage. Thus, I have no picture and may not for a while as I am currently rebuilding my roof junk files (I haven't made any on my current hard drive).

I do have these to show you, however.
This is my slightly modified F5 known as the FA/5 Gryphon (another CJ/MD thing). It is slightly larger than a standard F5, and only lacks some detailing...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FFA5.jpg&hash=0a402b0b2550b4862fb104f3274b7a87f28b5eda)

Before I can place it on my version of this (currently in intial development.)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FIrisAircraftCarrierConcept.jpg&hash=1059269d8402d89289a20678d1251fea50fcac0c)
This is a GDI Aircraft Carrier from Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars. My version will be the same basic shape, but will be more to scale, will support JATO and VTOL aircraft and have a slightly more realistic look.

Okay, time for another update.

I'm having trouble deciding on the placement of roof junk for the Iris Capitol Building. Thus, I have moved to nighttexturing the windows. I'm showing this picture so that you can suggest what I should do. I only ask that you keep these two facts in mind 1) The building has a 9x9 SC4 tiles or so footprint 2) It is a Capitol Building.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FIrisCapital-2.jpg&hash=c2a879df6a2a654782f1d985f526c8e94447ec42)

Also I found this little beauty on an older computer. It is based off a F117, and will be used on my upcoming aircraft carrier and be released on a separate lot.

Here's my first ever boat. I designed this one based off an image from Popular Meachanics. This is an accurate scale although fictional Aircraft Carrier dubbed the Orca Supercarrier. Some quick dimensions 380m long, 124m wide, about 50m underwater and 18m above. Fear it  $%#Ninj2

Okay, another day, another update. I'm also asking that if you have any suggestions (doable with GMAX) that you post them soon. Very few of my other projects have made it to this stage. I think all of those made it SC4. This one is in the home stretch.

Current Status
Major Modelling-100% (this will not be changed)
Detailing 50-60% (need suggestions)
Nightlighting 20-30% (open to suggestions)

Plaza at Night

CC that boat your right I do fear it!!! Far as the capitol building is going looking good and night lights I think Simfox has made a tut on how to trunite over at ST or even here I just dont remember where he put it lol.... Also I would love to see this lite up w/trunite...
Title: Re: Crushedcar's Random BAT's
Post by: crushedcar on February 03, 2009, 03:30:03 PM
Pat-thanks. Unfortunately, I doubt that I will be able to use truNite for this as it will be rendered with GMAX.

Edited the Orca Supercarrier more today. I changed the water line. The pervious version was to low and would have required one to dregde the area to 50+m underwater (at which point all underwater detail would probably be lost). The new waterline requires a much more conservative 32 m water depth. The ship is now about 24m above and 32m below. Other Editions to this model include the FA-5s and B3s(F117s) seen earlier in this thread, the addition of the bridge area, and some (rail)gun batteries. Additionally the texturing and editing process has begun. The only major change I foresee is the changing of the hull. Currently it is two pieces but, I plan to change it to one single piece. Again suggestions, comments, etc. are welcome. Picture is Zoom 5 1:2. Yeah, its that big!

Title: Re: Crushedcar's Random BAT's Iris Capitol 4-Picture Update
Post by: crushedcar on February 09, 2009, 01:54:00 PM
I have finished nightmapping windows for the Iris Capitol Building. That leaves actual nightlighting (A pain I'm sure), and some roof and garden details. For now enjoy these pics showing all four night angles at zoom 4 (because otherwise I can't show the whole building.)

CC did you get this rendered at all??? I like how it turned out!!
Title: Re: Crushedcar's Random BAT's
Post by: crushedcar on February 21, 2009, 09:30:15 AM
It has been rendered and other than poor quality shadows on the lot (courtesy of Maxis/EA) and some annoying smudges at zooms 4,5,6 (that despite rendering three times [4 hour render time] will noe go away) I'd call it good. I'll post a picture later today.

Edit #1
Pictures as promised.
Detail of "Sploch" issue. Does anyone now how to fix this?

Night Overview. Building at right for scale purposes. Apperently, the building glows at night. Is this too severe (I didn't intend this).

CC that is looking great for the lot there and also are you talking about the one little bit of the corner on the building itself where it seems displaced? To fix it I honestly have no clue maybe posting a question in the BAT help thread might do some good?
Title: Re: Crushedcar's Random BAT's
Post by: crushedcar on February 21, 2009, 12:24:58 PM
Pat-After doing a little serach I'm guessing that the "sploch problem" (likely responsible for the displaced corner) is a result of my graphics card.  After fiddling with my shadow settings the ugly incorrect shadows disappeared. That just leaves the night glow. If the glow is not too harsh I may try this on my older computer (It has a better graphics card).

Well, as far a the Iris Capitol Building goes I'm done. I am debating whether or not to release it. In the meantime I have reworked my Orce Supercarrier. The new version is narrower and shorter than the previous version. Left to be done on this are the texturing of the flight deck, the addition of some detail on the hull, detail on the bridge, and, of course, more aircraft.

Pat-thanks. However I am not going to be using that model. I've decided instead to chop the wings off in order to better anchor the building. This will make the building more versatile too. I'm going to render that tonight.

All-If you have any comment on my work, please let me know. I realize that such specialized buildings are not likely to get many responses. Still, I would like to here your comments and suggestions.

Today's Random BAT-Orca Supercarrier

Zoom 3: West

Showing a nearly complete flight deck. Still missing one aircraft and some pavement stuff. Bridge needs more junk on the roof and anti-air/anti-missle guns have to be added.

How about a slightly more sedate retrevial system? like a arrestor cable. That net looks... ...a bit dangerous. :o
Title: Re: Crushedcar's Random BAT's
Post by: crushedcar on March 16, 2009, 11:22:31 AM
Pat--no net catcher system. I don't think that would work to well on anything like a F16.
sim-al2--You were absolutely right. I decided on the arrestor cable system.

Here is an update on the Orca Supercarrier. I just have to add a couple of weapons systems (currently only Sea Sparrow Missiles are shown) and one more aircraft. LODs aren't done yet either.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FOrcaSupercarrier-4.jpg&hash=5a72701d46b66778d11f75cfbb0ebb67dbfdc690)

This my next Naval BAT. Introducing the Tiger Shark Class Battleship. Shown here is the basic above water hull design. The texture on the center part is just a placeholder. This one is based off of GDI's Battleship in C&C 3.

A little side note, I intend to release the Iris Capitol Building. I will send it off for scrutinerring tomorrow.
Title: Re: Crushedcar's Random BAT's
Post by: crushedcar on March 20, 2009, 09:00:13 AM
Well, good news, bad news time. Good News: I can render the Orca Supercarrier overnight. I've already figured out water lots and building size tweaking. Bad News: I can't make this customize-able due to Maxis coding. That means I have to render it with all aircraft on board.

I still haven't modelled any CIWS guns for the aircraft carrier. Also I still need to test the night version of the carrier and the waterline. ETA on the Orca Supercarrier is one week.

Title: Re: Crushedcar's Random BAT's
Post by: crushedcar on March 27, 2009, 02:10:30 PM
Evillions-First of all, I didn't model the trees those are by kd5rax and can be found on the STEX. As far as people those are just groups of boxes (two for the arms, two for the legs, one for the torso, and one for the head.) Doors are something that I learned through trial and error.

Pat-Well, I'm pretty sure Maxis never envisioned the following this game would have, and the things they would find out.

Today I have a two part update. First is a schedule of some things to come in my Iris Military Project. Second is a new BAT that I think everyone can use.

If you look through this thread you may note that I have already BATted a couple of fighter planes and am working on a pair of Naval BATs. This is now grouped as one large project. The Iris Military Project (IMP) will be a set of near future land, sea, and air combat vehicles. On the docket right now.

Orca Supercarrier (Progress pictured below)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FOrcaSupercarrier-5.jpg&hash=2d6884e8ba7af204e50b9fe94bd236104028870e)
Tigershark Battleship
Manta VTOL Carrier
E-3 Eagle
F-4 Firehawk
Mammoth Tank

All of the above have been started or will be started soon.

A little something I am working on. When completed it will be a full size Major League stadium. Some of the areas on this have been altered with paint. They represent the next steps.

It's been a while, I know. This isn't technically a BAT, but rather than create a new thread for this only, I am posting it in here.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FAtlasBayMilitaryStation-Dock1.jpg&hash=fa8866419174bd8892d64ddd89957acf67385218)
This is simply a relot of some of the SNM-WIMPS props to create a modular dock system. I still have to work on the modding and create a lot to attach these to the other SNM-WIMPS lots, but, assuming the BSC allows, I will release these shortly.

Okay this is a BAT thread, and I guess I can justify this post if I show a BAT. This the SA-1 Lightning, better known as the F-302 from Stargate.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FSA-1Lightning.jpg&hash=1b72da607d6db6b243c4d660000052a1340dc8a0)
The model is finished and just needs to rendered.

As always, feedback is appreciated.

sithlrd-Ah, yes. Don't forget Wraith and Replicators.  :P
beutelschlurf--Thank you. As far as the stadium goes it was dormant, but thanks to you I am going to get back to working on it.

Please forgive the erratic nature of my updates. College has played havoc with my life and probably will be for the next four years. In addition, I do some work for SimMars. I have a quick update on Atlas Media Stadium.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FAtlasMediaStadium-1.jpg&hash=badb277fa9b2e3ece1b4ab93606554e8e7683d32)

Yes, it is a long ways from completion. So far the only things that are finished with modelling are the field and the center field lawn. BTW, I apologize for the picture quality, I forgot to change the save setting in paint and it defaulted to jpeg. Usually, I save as .bmp and let photobucket convert it for me.

Welcome to page 3!

Here's another update on Atlas Media Stadium. Currently has seating for 4166. Still need to work add the area in right field, work on the dugouts, work on the restaurant, add a scoreboard...... Maybe I should stop reminding myself of how far I have yet to go.

Will there be a giant screen TV in Centerfield that is all the rage now in Major League stadiums?

scottott999--The name is Atlas Media Field. I don't think it would be complete with out a Jumbotron.

I have made progress on the stadium, however, I do not believe that it warrants display just yet. Instead, tonight I have another Naval BAT. This is based off the Zumwalt class destroyer planned and currently under construction by the US Navy. So far only the major parts of the ship are complete. I'll probably rework the hull to correct the distortion at the front of the ship. With that said here is the NDS-DD2 (my version needs a better name. Any suggestions?)

It's been a while since I posted anything on Atlas Media Stadium. This because I am trying to finish off the lower deck before moving on to the upper one. As such things such as textures and scaling issues have been addressed. There is still considerable work to be done before the lower deck is finished, but it's getting there. Here it is.

Seating Capacity: 14091

A little quickie. This is the F/A 8 Vampire. While not real this plane is based on a drawing I found of the F117 N. Also, the folowing pictures are still from gmax. The first one uses Simfox's method to change the render background, while the second one is me messing around with the Thumbnail Camera.

It's been a while, but I finally found a project that got me back into BATting. This building was created to add another dormitory to the University of Clayhurst, or rather I needed another dormitory for the university I'm building in game. This building is a loose recreation of Blazer Hall at UAB. I have all the geometry done. Texturing this thing is the next step. I'd like to make the wall color similar to the other Clayhurst buildings for visual consistency.

Thanks for the kind words.

I've worked up some textures for right now. I'm having some trouble though. The textures I'm using are all showing up a little too bright compared to how they appear in the model view. This is especially noticeable on the white border and study room roof. Here's what that looks like in the model editor.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FIntended%2520Appearance.jpg&hash=f0db4aa63ced827e39a39a0b7981805bbc2690e1) (http://s113.photobucket.com/user/crushedcar/media/Intended%20Appearance.jpg.html)

And here it is in the render.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FRaphaelHallTextures.jpg&hash=3a4e3db0ac3a30a750dbe3794814e77cff4b47b0) (http://s113.photobucket.com/user/crushedcar/media/RaphaelHallTextures.jpg.html)

I'd like the texture to show up more accurately in the render and was wondering if someone familiar with the necessary adjustments could help me out here. I'm by no means an expert in photo manipulation, so I'm not sure what to do about this.

Generally speaking, gmax does a bad job with textures. To compensate for this, you generally have to make your textures a fair bit darker than you actually want them to appear as for them to appear correctly in renders. Gmax is especially bad with light greys (and of course whites) - they'll appear as just washed out white as the study room roof did in the render. That's just true for all textures though, so if you want your roof textures, wall textures, and windows to appear as they do in the perspective view, just use whatever photeditor you have to darken them a bit. Play around with the values until you're happy with each texture in the gmax render.

The model is looking good so far

The BAT lighting rig especially washes out the textures of anything facing up, so as MushyMushy said, you have to darken those textures quite a lot to get them to look right in-game.

Thanks for the help. The techniques are coming back to me now.

I was able to correct the texture enough to avoid the whitewashing. I'm working on the night windows at the moment. I'll probably make a few tweaks to the rooftop texture and probably remodel the "crown molding." I don't know what to for roof junk. The real building I'm basing this off of does not appear to have any, so I could go that way. However, I think I may add a few vents and such. Anyway here's a progress shot.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FRaphaelHallNight1.jpg&hash=997a3a629b1387bae2aafb259c56a8620014c640) (http://s113.photobucket.com/user/crushedcar/media/RaphaelHallNight1.jpg.html)

I've also started modeling on another large dorm. This one is based of Slater Hall at the University of Iowa. This is not intended to be a recreation, but a similar style dorm.

I think this is coming along very nicely! As for roof junk I don't know how closely you want to keep to the original, but otherwise a few solar panels might be one idea.

I did a test render today. I wanted to get an idea of what the building would look like in game, so ignore the lack of detail on the lot. I put this in with some Clayhurst stuff as thats what I want it to blend in with. Here's a day and night comparison.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FRaphaelDayGame.jpg&hash=2ff9e49b21de168e200d3aa6709312eb1fbc1b52) (http://s113.photobucket.com/user/crushedcar/media/RaphaelDayGame.jpg.html)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn203%2Fcrushedcar%2FRaphaelNightGame.jpg&hash=071905543e377dff88a8d5b295264df9c181df23) (http://s113.photobucket.com/user/crushedcar/media/RaphaelNightGame.jpg.html)

The good news is this only a half hour render so if something needs to be tweaked it should be relatively easy.

It's looking very good!

It's very handy to see your building next to the others: I recommend increasing the size of the brick texture (you've found a pretty good match in terms of colour) as at the moment it appears to be a single flat colour. Are you tiling the bitmap in Gmax or are you tiling the bitmap in a photo-editing program?
I would recommend the latter: you can apply a subtle gradient and other dodge/burn effects. If you look closely at the Clayhurst building you can see slight areas of darker and lighter areas on the bricks - in addition to adding a bit of extra realism, it helps to break up the monotony of large walls.

Another trick JB used to use was with windows: he would set the opacity between 20-30% and use a really loud and bright advertising poster image as the floor. This would then make the windows appear slightly different shades (gmax tends to handle transparent materials rather poorly) as opposed to the typical flat blue-grey.
He would use spotlights to light these up at night, but it's up to you how similar you want to make your buildings to his...although I do spy the same light treatment by one of the exit doors, which is really nice.

With a flat-roof that has little or no roof junk, making a believable texture is crucial to avoiding the less than flattering comments that invariably get made once the Bat is uploaded.
You know how much you have tiled your roof texture by in Gmax, so replicate that in a photo-editing program so that you can apply the UVW map as 1x1. Then, in Gmax, on the top view port, right-click the 'top' button and select the 'smooth+highlights' option. You can then take a screenshot of your rooftop edges and use that to add water stains, grime, etc.

If you can easily scale up that glass entrance area, I would do so, as it looks squashed at the moment. If it is not easy to scale (and/or would require too much re-modelling) then you can just reduce the overhang of the concrete eaves which will show the top-most window pane (which at the moment is hidden by the isometric view) and that will give you roughly the same effect.

All in all, this is a great project that you've undertaken and it's great to see it coming along &apls
