In the early 1600s an explorer named Jean-Pierre Duprey set out with 14 other people to settle a French colony in the new world. After weeks on a truly uncomfortable boat the French colonists reached Northern America, the colonists settled a large plot of land that was near flat at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. It was a heavily wooded area so there were plenty of building resources. It was late summer so the colonists decided to start building a shelter immediately.

The colony as it was in the very beginning. There was a path leading from the colony center up a hill to a cleared plot of land. The shelter was being built up on the top of the hill.

56 yards from the colony was a clear spring river. The colony used this river for their drinking water. Their food was supplied by France as farms had not yet been built.

April 7th 1663

Two years passed before the colony reached a boom point. Jean-Pierre decided to return to France to bring back 50 more colonists after over half the colony died during the winter. After he returned the colony built up a town center along with their first farm.

The colony as it stood in 1663. The town center of Marais stood to the west of the river bank. The farm stood south of the town center.

The first chapel was built upon a high hill overlooking the colony. It was the first structure built.

The town center. A few cabins stood as barracks to colonists. Each cabin could hold up to 12 people. At the end of the dirt path cutting through the town stood the town's second chapel. It was built due to the rising population levels. At the other end of the street stood the trading post for local farmers and fishermen.

The farm was built at the bottom of the hill the town stood on. It was next to the stream, so the farmers could also catch fish to sell at the trading post.
