I needed to connect an island to the mainland.
But did not like the idea of a bridge spoiling the coastline,
impressive though some bridges can be!
So the only other solution was a Tunnel.
Hence construction began on the B'Nith Tunnel.
It leads to the B'Nith Seaport to be shown once its completed.

Hope you enjoyed these.
Ps. The next big tunnel is on the planning boards and the preliminary site has been chosen.
Don't hold your breath- these things take many months to construct. lol
So now you have a start lets see some of yours!

Beautiful tunel-areas! Great detailing!
Great work TheTeaCat. Beautiful pictures

&apls Great work Teacat!
I will add some of mine tunnels as soon as I made some pics.
Yesterday, I needed to increase the railroad tunnel (simple tunnel under a highway) as this tunnel needed to transport more than 12.000 people. So I have made 3 RR tunnels next to eachother. If you are fast you can do it. I will show you the pic later.

thanks for comments and looking forward to those pics

Great tunnels AK. It looks awesome
That are beautiful tunnel (-areas), Alek King of SC4!
Wow, impressive!
TheTeaCat, has there bin a huge storm or something? There is a lot of wood on the coastline ;D
excellent work on those tunnels guys
Aha, I promised you the pic I had of my 3-tunnel system.
more than 12.000 passengers use this rail road, so I had to do something about the single tunnel that I had.

looking great, Nik-Nik!
:) Alfred and Bat thanks for the encouraging reply.
Here's the same tunnel from the other side:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg150.imageshack.us%2Fimg150%2F290%2Ftunnelsnp7.jpg&hash=f079eb61da449de07ccfdca103c4f8760a29eae9) (http://imageshack.us)
Well the area needs some more work I agree. Therefore from another town the tunnel entrance:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg100.imageshack.us%2Fimg100%2F5033%2Fportsmouthtunnelentrancac0.jpg&hash=57a7b3f8d6880f237d9b9cbbf2407e276aab6d54) (http://imageshack.us)
and the whole tunnel for you all (entrance almost hidden by the low hanging clouds):
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg100.imageshack.us%2Fimg100%2F4261%2Fportsmouthoverview1yn9.jpg&hash=dcf48abc045a2fdb2f72cbc999e4ee2a67baca83) (http://imageshack.us)
As you can see I started at the high wealth area and the other side needs some more work too. But I am focussing first on the high wealth area.
Nik-Nik
Great work all
Nik-Nik, I think these are the first pics I see from you, and I have to say I like the overall transit networks layout. Very good work ;)
Alek, again some delightful pics from your cities. Thanks for sharing

:o That is one big tunnel Nik-Nik! I cannot wait to see you develop more of the that area  Great work
Thanks Alfred. That tunnel is huge indeed, quite an endevour to build it and make the entrance somehow believable.
Basically this town is part of a 4 square area:
1- Farm town
2- Low wealth town - suburbia
3- Office town & High and middle class suburbia (2nd and 3rd pic)
4- Dirty & Manufacturing Industry town (1st and last pics)
None of these areas are fully developped, but you can see some more pics in the Show us your suburbs section.
I am trying to balance these 4 cities and I just cannot figure out how it is possible to have more than 75.000 low wealth (no unemployment zot!) and only 16.000 dirty industry and 5.000 agricultural jobs.
The jobs in my cities just do not add up to the number of people living in these towns. Strange game this is.
Nik-Nik
Here's a couple of images. So far it's the only tunels I have on my new region.

You're right, the train you see coming out of the tunel it's the same you see at the other end going in ;) I've modified the train data for a more realistic number of cars. Passengers have a minimum of 10 cars + engine and freight a minimum of 20 cars. That way I hardly see a train with 2 or 3 cars like before. :)
Thanks guys.
Very picturesque trains! Unfortunately, passenger trains aren't as popular in America as they are in other countries (not including inner-city trains). But I'd love to just one day take a ride in a train in a countryside with tunnels just like the one in your picture. Nice job!
Well, here's a few of my tunnels, first, both ends of an urban freeway bypass tunnel in Port LaSalle:

Very nice Rayden. What's that building that spans the highway?
I'm going to need to get some pics in here.
These tunnels are great!!! Is there a tutorial on how to make the underwater tunnels? I know there is one for underwater highways on ST, but everytime I try it, I destroy my tunnel.
Never mind!!! Found TheTeaCat's tutorial.

:) awesome tunnels everyone.
Great tunnel project Blahdy!
bwatterud. Darn I cannot find it. I tried looking at STEX on Station, Rest, Stop, Truck,Highway. I have it myself but it is well hidden in my plugins map (that I do not have available here at work).
I will look for it when I am back at home (if Rayedn does not beat me to it).

Katten Gustaf, how did you do that?? Everytime I try to connect cities by a tunnel, it doesn't let me.

The highway used to be an elevated viaduct, but this is much nicer. I'll probably replace the commercial district next to the train station with some BSC parks, after I find time to download the set.
how did you get the entrances to look different than the default Maxis look?
MaryBeth
I used Buddybud's rural highway wall set which are on the STEX. It's a set of two overhanging props that are included in one of the sets. I don't remember which set it's in, but you might as well get them all.
cool tunnels ;D i love how you did the off ramps.

The train makes an elevation change of 30m ^up^ with only 60m <between> tunnel exits. Rather than an unrealistically steep slope, the gradual loop allows a gentle rise and a smooth ride.
well, that makes sense then.
??? Okay I am stunned. %confuso I don't recognize any of the pieces for the GLR that you used sanantonio. ( the sunken stuff ) Very kool indeed. And in the last pic, is that a transition from GLR to subway?

Hmm... I rarely see a good usage of the GLR due to their complexity and how tenacious it is to plop them, but sanantonio, WOW!!! You should give a tutorial on making perfect GLR networks.

Thx.
Great pictures Danthe.. that is also quite an interesting downtown area!
you guys have quite some impressive work. Danthe, those pics are beautiful.
Here's some of my recent tunnel work:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg262.imageshack.us%2Fimg262%2F3548%2F18040701lebenfausttunnetd8.jpg&hash=21c482ee7b47f56c2ab17c3e8044d9f07f718c69)
This pic shows the initial tunnel layout, built using the marvellous tunnel lots by buddybud. I was expecting this tunnel to become a bottle neck in the very near future, as my city expanded westward (to the bottom of this pic) and more and more sims needed to get to the commercial areas and the central train station in east (up). So.. I had to redesign the tunnel to handle the increased capasity and also allow mass transit in the form of buses to pass (as we all know, these lots don't allow other than cars due to technical limitations).
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg262.imageshack.us%2Fimg262%2F5296%2F18040702lebenfausttunneid0.jpg&hash=d02a64a00159b45c357a35a80733726d265d70c7)
This is how the tunnel turned out afterwards. I'm quite satisfied with it, though as a realism buff I find some errors as well... like the trees above the tunnel entrance, which would destroy the structures with their roots. But.. I like the slope the tunnel creates and I'm not creating any more custom lots here... It may not be obvious, but there is absolutely not a single original Maxis lot in this picture (not even the ones using Maxis buildings).
Wow, some super tunnels, great pictures and they give me some great ideas.

Shiftred - I thought I had everything from Buddybud but I have never seen this underpass before... Where can I get it?
snorelli,
I agree, those are really nice. I like the walls as well. Did they come from the same place, Shiftred?
---Gaston
The walls are Jeronij's and are available at the LEX here - http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=168 (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=168)
Buddybud made a series of extension sets for these walls (search the STEX for buddybud) but they don't include this underpass... ()what()
snorelli,
I had these walls for some time now, but I think they were updated or something since I got them. Probably when they were put on the LEX. (like I said I have had them for a while. lol) Thanks for the link. I have most (if not all) of buddybud,s stuff and you're right I have never seen that underpass.
---Gaston
The underpasses are attached to one of buddybud's posts in his development thread (Under Bridge Scenery) (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=37&threadid=64741&highlight_key=y) on Simtropolis. I don't know what page they're on, but it's towards the end. He had a bunch of good unreleased stuff going, but i think most of it was lost when his hard drive corrupted.
Thanks bwatterud - can't find 'em though. After taking about 15 minutes to look through three pages, I gave up. Anything attached to a post in the forums over there might as well be buried a mile underground... ::)
There's actually a pretty big link in the middle of the post (large font, and bolded), and some text on how to use them.
EDIT:Found em (Linky (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=37&threadid=64741&STARTPAGE=25&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear)). There's a link on the top of a post a little bit down.

Wow - you guys have more patience than I do... Thanks so much!
Tragedy about buddybud's hard drive. If he's looking for a place to start again, finishing these up would seem like a good idea. In the meantime, they look great. Thanks again!
@ tommiej:
Those poles are a creation of my own. I too first used the poles by frogface but the way they have been exported in BAT didn't suit my needs, so I made some of my own. They're loosely based on the design on Swiss railways (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Overhead_lines%2C_Puidoux.jpg). The station is actually composed of two lots, the station itself and the passenger platform above. As I've made them, the electric poles being there isn't that much of a mystery.. ;D
MIncroabl, I think that you should think about uploading those two lots, the station and platform. They look great to me. Are they functional?
Robin  &apls
Well I propably won't be uploading this particular station any time soon, as it happens to be one from my collection of "City-Sensitive Custom Lots", that is, I made it specifically for that particular city/location and won't use it anywhere else. Plus, because it isn't made with sharing in mind, the dependancy list would be far too big and unpractical. It's actually quite easy to build a similiar setup, if someone is interested I can explain it with more detail. Oh, and they are quite functional.
Edit:
While I'm here, I thought I'd show you how the earlier tunnel eventually (well, at least for now) turned out. I knew those trees above the tunnel would bug me every time I saw them, and the tunnel itself started to become more and more unsatisfactory. So, I rebuilt it and took advantage of the rail being on a slope (why would someone dig even deeper if there was enough clearance already?).
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg442.imageshack.us%2Fimg442%2F1977%2F24040701lebenfausttunnewo4.jpg&hash=b2f9c4e5d4c85bb3796af845e3fd639e64d7b6a9)
To avoid repetition I changed the angle so that you can actually see three new tunnels too.
That looks good.
I'd suggest that you get the Diagonal Fix mod and fix up those jaggies on the railway. :P

The Jaggy Eliminator (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=15048)
Yes, I considered using that mod when it came out, but as my region is quite hilly the side-effects would have been devastating on the scenery. As a matter of fact, I'm experimenting with some custom BATs to hide the jagged edges and give the slope a special appearance.

Khiyana,
Really great tunnel system. Excellent way to get under the rail line. I do have a "where did you get that?" question. In the first picture, (The "Entrance") near the top, and the railroad, there is a set of what I am guess is sound barrier walls. Where did they come from?
---Gaston
Thank you!

Thank you, ElPhantasmo69 an Zaphod for nice comments!
Zaphod, I imroved the contrast on all pictures (not much, just a bit). The third one is slightly brightened. But I didn't alter the color of water. This is an Ocean River Mod. There are some options in it, I have shallow water in greenish color.
OK. I'm relatively new at using these plugins, but I am completely blow away by these ideas. I have a question, though, which I'm sure has been posted many times:
How do you run a road tunnel underwater? I try to run highways and roads, but my only option is a bridge. Is there some sort of plugin or building road tunnels or is there some sort of technique being used to trigger SC4 to give you a tunnel option accross a body of water?
Thanks for your help.
demoreno: To build an underwater tunnel, what you have to do is raise up the land all the way across the body of water where you want the tunnel to cross, then build your tunnel. Once it's built, you can lower the land again right back to where it was, and as long as you don't demolish the entrances to the tunnel, it'll still be there.
Quite of a bump, but that shouldn't matter on these threads, right?

The photo above is the air vent towers on the New Dublin (north) side of the harbor, you can see the little FLUP tunnel vents between the one-way roads, the tree's and boardwalk overhang the FLUP pieces.

This last picture shows an overview of the area, I am not showing the South Dublin side because there is nothing built there yet except the tunnel exit, there will be a tunnel vent building (think Boston big dig or Brooklyn Battery Tunnel) and the toll plaza.
Thank You.
Really beautiful FLUPsing there jpj_starfleet
Now off to ask you how you made it work in the FLUPS thread...
Great tunnels everyone
Here's a rail and subway tunnel I made to connect the suburbs and downtown without having to destroy all the buildings
