Thanks for the 1st reply! They are as follows: Newman Inc Water Company, Large Water Tower Set by  simgoober, Industry Pipeline Set by  1357924680. The two industrial buildings I'll have to get back to you on as I can't remember their names.

Considering it's mostly Maxis buildings, wow.  The custom content you do use is very well-used; the dam, especially, is impressive.

The industrial areas are extremely realistic.  I typically find industrial hard to make realistic, so great work there!

Nice city growing there.

I like the new housing near the bypass.  Nice road lay outs with space to breathe.  I struggle to resist the temptation to fill in every gap, so well done.

The only thing I don't like are the trees. I hate those original maxis ones :P

Lexington Town Center and the surrounding suburbia's very impressive.  I like how you group sprawl into subdevelopments, just like RL.  It reminds me a lot of the suburbs twenty or so miles outside of Charlotte - there's so much open space yet all the houses in the subdevelopments are crammed into 1/4 acre lots.

bat - Thank you! Hope to have a larger one tomorrow.
paroch - Welcome! Funny you should mention the temptation to fill in every space. I do that all the time. Seems like I start a region with the intent of keeping things spaced better like in real cities but slowly I revert to type! Some areas should be tightly packed like downtowns and such, but much of todays communities are more spread out.
Pavle - Thanks for the comments. Yes, the Maxis trees can be somewhat monotonous, which is why I've interspaced with some of jeronij's trees. Sometimes I use the default grouping which includes a nice variety.
pickled_pig - It's the same here in Charleston, SC, though there is quite a bit of "in-fill" going on now.

I imagine you're going to show us development of the airport access road over time, from how you set up update 2.  Great approach there - I believe you did that a lot on your ST CJs and it made them memorable.

I like how the airport's way out of town as opposed to right in the city or suburbs.  It's pretty accurate considering the direction of modern development - outward.

See you around

Nice update there amapper.

I like the hotel with tennis park - look good together and I can imagine that set up near an airport like London Gatwick.

As for the airport - I don't remember ever seeing a RL airport with runways that cross but I know many MD'ers do this.  Maybe our airports in the UK are small and uncomplicated but do US airports have runways that cross? (flying to Las Vegas next month so need to know whether to keep my eyes closed on landing  ;) ).  I'll need to put an airport in my MD soon - onlyhave Maxis airport so far.  Where did you get your airport stuff?  I know there are a few packs out there, so interested to hear your views on the pros and cons of the set you use - thanks.

Look forward to next update.

rooker1 - Thanks for the visit. The first development is taking shape with more to follow. As the city/county grows there will be a major frieght terminal and an aircraft maintenance facility.
meinhosen - Thank you. One of the most important things that needs to be done is to add more residential areas to increase growth. That will enable larger scale things to happen. Also in the cards: one or two legs of interstate highways.

Nice updates there.

Your region is coming along very nicely.

I think there is a feeling of space about the place that gives a nice feel.

In the Logistics and Distribution Centre, I like the building that is near the top - orange brick walls with a blue zig-zag roof.  Do you know what it is called and where I can download it.  I could do with that one - thanks.

I lok forward to more.

Replies:

thundercrack83 - Thank you for the encouragement. My updates are not as often as I'd like but work has been demanding the last few months.
bat - Thanks for the kind comments. The paper is not what I would like it to be. I don't know how to do mosaics so it limits me greatly.
rooker1 - I am trying to make the general layout more open to allow for realistic bridge approaches and other things. They do look more realistic.
paroch - Hope the links helped you with the distribution center. They look nice in game.
nedalezz - Glad you like the airport. It should look better as the area grows and traffic at the field growth also. More gates, parking, support facilities and roads.
Asimov - Well that is the challenge isn't it. A place is desirable and a great place to live. Then it's discovered and people start moving in. How to maintain the areas attractiveness as it grows.
NASCAR_Guy - Glad you enjoy the paper. Thanks for stopping by.
sebes - Good to have you visit. Hope you stop again.
Boernie - Glad you like the MD. Come by again.

My wife and I spent a three day weekend in Lexington last fall when the horses were running at Keeneland. Are you going to try to recreate the rolling hills of the Kentucky countryside with all its horse farms? Lexington has a lot of tobacco warehousing and nearby fields. Corn crops for the nearby Bourbon industry are other things one could try to do.

Nice journal. I am surprised how green the Painted Desert mod looks. I'll have to give that mod a try.

RON-E - Glad you like Lexington. Hope you stop by again.
thundercrack83 - Thanks! I should have time for a bigger update Sunday or Monday.

sebes - Yes, it looks like a nice area to live in. Good urban feel.
paroch - Me too. I plop when I can. Growing is too unpredictable for me.
dedgren - Thanks dedgren, I really appreciate the recognition.
patfirefghtr, rooker1, bat, Ennedi, Danthe, thundercrack83, tooheys - Thank you all for the kind words. Looking forward to all comments and suggestions.
jmyers2043 - Probably not as I am not sure how to duplicate the horse farms. Any ideas will be welcome. It seems as though the CP_DiagonalFix_Standard.dat file has to be there to give the consistent green of the grass.

I must say your building style is very interesting for me

You are the first person I know who build industrial plants on the large space, separated one from another by meadows and forest. It is very realistic for some kinds of modern Hi-Tech industry. Most people build industrial objects one close to another.
I'm afraid I will not have any chance to do something similar in Shosaloza ::), but I like it very much.

Your road network looks excellent. It is vell planned (I think it's very functional too) and it looks very clear.
BTW, wchich road mod do you use? It looks very good!

And I like the general view of the city  Again, everything looks clear. I know where is the center, commercial and industrial areas.

Excellent work and different from the main stream MDs, definitely worth the award! &apls &apls

thundercrack83 - Thank you for visiting again. As I mentioned to bat, I am concentrating on establishing a lot of suburban development out into the surrounding area. Even the modest buildings downtown would only exist in a fairly sizable city. The region currently has only about 120K.

I like the surburban layout, nicely planned with plenty of green between estates.

Also you have used the ave roundabouts very well.

Downtown Lexington looks good and I'm impressed by the way the residential and commercial merge wih no distinct boundaries, a realistic look in my opinion for a smaller community such as this. Looking forward to more.

Cheers

Urban  sprawl at its finest!  You have a great feel for open space which I have so much trouble with.  I really enjoy watching downtown grow with each update.  Nicely done!  &apls

When I look at this MD, I get the feel that its very "American". which is a good thing considering its what you're modeling your city after. Reminds me so much of the town I used to live in in suburban Boston. Great stuff, and fantastic picture taking.

Again very good update - you are a very good planner and the structure of your city is clearly visible! It is not very common in MDs  ;)
Also, I like your work with space very much, I think it would be comfortable and pleasant to live in such city!

bat - Thanks. Here is a panorama (only two pages) creating Lexington's newspaper.
sebes - I wanted the airfield to be close but not too close to the city, and have plenty of space for development around it.
tooheys - Back where I'm from traffic circles are more common than here in the southeastern US.
JBSimio - Yes, sprawl is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I am attempting to keep the city open but not spread too thin. We'll see...
nedalezz - Boston has both. Old world compactness in it's older areas and American sprawl further out.
Ennedi - Thank you. I hope to preserve open areas to help relieve the urban impact some.

Hi, there, amapper,

Your region has some very remarkable features.     Your transit system looks different somehow; I can't quite put my finger on it, but the look of the highways and roads is different and more true to life.   &Thk/(  If you've mentioned a modd, please forgive my inattention.

You also use the natural elements very convincingly.  I, too, am surprised at the versatility of the painted desert modd.  Few dams portrayed are as faithful to what's out there.  Is the dam on that gorgeous mountain lake I see in the lower right of your region shot? The lake is a little different than Peg's and wasn't Jeroni's TPW yet; is it Citynut's set?  Or could it be that rural canal set I saw on Tout Sim City?   :-\  Whatever it is, it sits in the lap of the mountains quite well. Finally, you've totally captured the US growth areas, those small cities that attract urbanites weary of the challenges of the metro area.  It looks like your infrastructure will more than hold up.

Good work, here, and thanks for the engaging read.  I wish you good thoughts in your further building and chronicling of the area, and will enjoy going along for the ride.

Bye for now.
--Liv

For me being European it's all a bit squarish, but I know that's how many American towns look in RL. I like the nature where you situated your cities in very much. This is a nice MD you've got going here!

Amazing, amazing stuff! Where is Lexington County based on, if anywhere? I mean, which state?

Fantastic update, and your aerial shots look so realistic.

Fantastic idea to post a recent map and an older map in the same post. It's interesting to see how Lexington deveops.

QuoteThe County believes it makes more sense to build for the future than play catch up later
How wise... the citizens can praise themselves lucky with such a county board motto  ;)
I realy like the way how you situate your new residential areas close to the woods and lakes, without giving it a park feeling. Good job my friend!

This was a very nice update, love these kind of overview pictures to show the development. And I think you are making some quite realistic looking suburbs, you are not afraid to leave open space between the different areas, and with nature like you have showed us in the last updates, your sims should be happy with their accommodation.

Amapper simply stunning and amazing on the Bog and Resivor!!! This last update of the hospital area is real great as well your transportation network... You are doing one heck of a job here...

I do have a question for you i see a building i dont recongize from anywhere it looks like a truck terminal... its located in Long Meadow and there is a better shot of that building in the next pic that says about the housing poping up in Long Meadow.... What is that building??? Would you happen to have a link for it by a chance??? thank you - pat

The airport that you made is one of the most realistic I have ever seen in MD. And yet again, there is still room left for expansion! Clever my friend

I especially like the way how the tunnel is running under the departure halls, to catch arriving passngers right after they took their luggage from the carrousels. Are you a professial traffic planner by any chance ?

amapper, you have a great MD here. I especially like your focus on the transportation for the area.

In your last update about the passenger part of the airport, I love the tunnel that runs under the arrival/departure hall. That's a great idea as many airports have two levels of roadways to separate arriving and departing passengers. I never would have thought about that. But now that I've seen that tunnel, I'm going to use it in my own airport. Great work on the MD.

Your transportation systems are second to none; the best Ive ever seen. They are so life-like and realistic. Even though the MD's look is totally American, it reminds of how the Chinese are developing theyre new communities. Dont get me wrong; your MD looks nothing Asian, lol, but the way you develop your communities is reminiscent of how they are doing things there.

Another fantastic update, and downtown Lexington is just beautiful.

Hi Amapper,

I have to confess that grid cities are not usually my cup of tea - BUT, you do them so well that I am really taken by Lexington County.  The business parks illustrate this - very square but very realistic and there's something about them that just pleases the eye.

That zoom out shot of the town square is a great picture.  I know it's a standard maxis flower garden but it fits there PERFECTLY.  I can't think of any other plaza or garden that would fit there as well.

And the rail yards and connections to factories are also top notch.

Great updates.

No kidding - I love your planning style and city building. The business parks fit very will in the landscape. That said, made me read back all 7 pages of your MD and realy think you're a hell of city planner... just about every picture in Lexington gives me WOW feeling. Here are some views of Manchester, down river from Lexington. As freight traffic increased through the region, rail roads expanded their switching facilities here because of the availability of land. Up until the expansion of the airports cargo handling capabilities, most workers came from Lexington and worked mostly on rail road related jobs. As you can see, the area is home to a wide variety of companies.

I enjoyed every piece here again ! What you sure here is so freakin' realistic, I still cannot believe how that is possible. One example of what I mean: the bridge/viaduct shown in the 4th and 7th picture. This is what tried to achieve myself probably a zillion times, never turned out to look like what you got. What is the secret?

Here is a brief tutorial on building ramps and slopes. It's important you have NAM installed as well as BRF_TunnelAndSlopeMod-bJERONI by jeroni.

I apologize for the lack of detail but I wanted to get it to you as soon as I could. If you have Questions, feel free to PM me.

Very good tutorial amapper!
Yes, using rail to make more soft avenue is very good method, it is also important to plop two single rail pieces first
I have only one question:
- Why did you use "Road on slope", not "Avenue on slope" puzzle pieces?

Yes, now I see you used avenue puzzle pieces, it is visible on the "T Avenue on Slope" piece  :)
You have another good thing here - very nice rock mod, it is very good to hide sharp edges, all slopes look very natural

Thanks - it's a very clear tuturial Amapper - realy appreciate it.    (and Ennedi as well for the very kind PM about the subject. Here is award for you both:

  &dance &dance

I do however think that the one shown in the update is more perfect than the one shown in the tuturial. I guess it's the short distance between the railroad and the river that does the trick there, combined with yet another viaduct and road-on-slopeslopes, and the very natural way the trees are plopped. And probably that rockmod gives it a very realistic touch!

Hi Amapper.

Some great updates and also a brilliant tutorial.  I agree with Sebes comments 100% - it is a look I struggle to create, so now I have a new tool that I can use, BIG THANKS.

Loved the region view of Lexington it really does look fantastic.

And I also like your high density housing developments.

All the best,

Paul

Richard- Wonderful layout and a fine style here.  All that pales, though, next to your sense of the landscape, which is masterful.

Lexington County is a great place to spend some time.  Not here enough.

That's going to change.

I really liked this update.  The farms look fantastic with their irregular shapes and the mix of tress in between.  Very well done and very realistic.  Your use of the plopable water and mix of dead trees is a very nice touch.
I wouldn't want to live there, but a I could take nice quiet and relaxing break there no problem.  ()stsfd()

Hi Mapper...

You've created a nice rural area and successfully depicted the encroachment of city sprawl. And I like the bog. I enjoyed this update.

I love the growth of Lexington County. It's realistic, plus the use of the airport terminals for warehouses and stuff is cool too. Keep up the good work.

Two really great updates there.  The farming areas are done very well.  I like that big farm with different generations working on it.  And the trasnition from farms to town is a difficult one to pull off, I feel that you've done it right.

The Ponds is a nice development as well, can imagine it being a nice place to live, work and shop.

The retail and distribution centre from a few updates back is a very nice creation. Looking huge and quite realistic, and your transport networks are another interesting part of your updates.

The airport and surrounding industrials are looking magnificent.

I like the way you use the airport terminal buildings to create such large warehouses.  Unless you've already copyrighted the idea I think I may have to adopt that approach when it comes to my distribution centres in future ;)

Great job.

Hey, that is a very good update.  Love the way the river meanders through the landscape.  It's nice to see such a relaistic in-game water river.  The vogue seems to be to use the TPW (myself included) so it's good to see what can be achieved with what Maxis gave us!

The beach looks good - nice addition to the town.

the Aspen Village Condos have always been a favourite of mine and they fit nicely here.

My only suggestion/comment would be that given the location, I'm surprised the houses that sit next to the golf course aren't more "upmarket".

The golf course itself looks superb - and that office complex around the lake is also great.

The overviews show us just what a great job you've done with Lexington so far - luckily it looks like you've still got plenty of room to grow into - great, more updates

I like the aerial shot. Kind of looks like a ... real city ... Also like how the creek leisurely winds and turns. My minds eye sees children fishing and swimming along its banks.
