  • Near Pine Cone Island Island (Island - NE Quad Pine Cone Twp - lat. 48° 46' 48" N / lon. 94° 48' 18" W (center).  Map key 8-G)  Near Pine Cone Island is a 11.8 acre/4.8 hectare island off the northwest tip of Nike Site Point.  It is the middle island in the five Pine Cone Islands (see main entry), although confusingly the island to its south is named Middle Pine Cone Island. The island is low and forested, and has cobble beaches.

  • Near Hills (Hills - ___ Quad ___ Twp - lat. ___° ___' ___" N / lon. ___° ___' ___" W (center).  Map key ___-___)  The Near Hills are....

  • Neeley's River (River - SE Quad Grass Twp, NW, NE Quads Holly Twp, NW, SW Quads Wind Twp - lat. 48° 53' 49" N / lon. 95° 24' 24" W (center) Map key 6-B)  Neeley's River is a ___ mile/___ kilometer river which branches off the Wind River on a southerly track through Wind Township. From there, it takes a  more westerly track across the northern quadrant of Holly Township and ultimately crosses into Manitoba, Canada. It was named for John Paul Neeley, a successful entrepreneur and one of the first settlers in the area.

  • New Sweden (Place - NW Quad Barrett Twp - lat. 48° 54' 08" N / lon. 95° 12' 17" W (center) Map key 6-D)  New Sweden is...

  • Nike Site Point (Point - SE Quad Pine Cone Twp - lat. 48° 46' 37" N / lon. 94° 47' 50" W (tip) Map key 8-G.)  Nike Site Point (formerly Myer's Point) is the very end of Iron Hook Cape, and is a 1,500 foot/450 meter long ridge of eroded limestone and granite that extends along an axis a few degrees west of north into the waters of the Hotham Inlet.  To the north of the point lies the long curving coast of Diddick's Bay.  The northernmost of the Pine Cone Islands are off to the west across a channel that is about a quarter mile/.4 km wide.  The islands and the point are geologically similar structures, and mark a fault that terminates there at its north end and extends southeastwards about 40 miles/65 kilometers into Minnesota.  Despite this commonality, however, Nike Site Point is much higher in elevation than the islands, rising at its greatest extent to about 403 feet/123 meters above the waters on either side at 1,459 feet/445 meters above mean sea level.  It was here that, pursuant to 3RR's membership with Canada and the United States in NORAD, the North American Air Defense system developed at the height of the Cold War, the region allowed the U.S. Army to construct and man a Nike-Hercules missile battery from 1957 to 1972.  The missiles were stored in a bunker blasted out of solid rock on the Diddick's Bay side, and the old concrete barracks, battery control building, and HIPAR radar platform can be seen today, although these structures, which have now been abandoned for over three decades, are quickly crumbling away.  As noted, the original name of Nike Site Point was Myer's Point, but the novelty of having a missile base located there resulted in the locals and most others in 3RR simply referring to it by what became, in an act of the Assembly the year following the site's decommissioning, its official name.  The point and about 20 acres adjacent to it at the end of the cape are ostensibly closed to the public, but the chain link fence built for this purpose is not in much better shape than the rest of the facility.  It has, accordingly, become a popular place for non-traditional weddings and other events, with the 3RR Troopers from the post in Des Plaines at least looking the other way, and often making it onto the guest list.  It is thought, however, that the promoters of an Eagles reunification tour concert were pushing things a bit too far by seeking to hold a concert at the site in the summer of 2008.

  • Nilsson Creek (Stream - NW, NE Quads Bents Twp - lat. 49° 12' 04" N / lon. 95° 08' 39" W (center) Map key 2-D)  Nilsson Creek is a ___ mile/___ kilometer stream which branches off the Marias River just south of Concho Creek's mouth. It follows a westerly track and dips to the SW to flow into Broken Arrow Lake. Then it flows out of the lake's NW corner where it heads NW before taking a southerly turn.

  • Pat's Summit (Hill - SE Quad Farwell Twp - lat. 48° 29' 44" N / lon. 95° 02' 32" W - elev. 1,274 ft/389 m amsl.)  Pat's Summit is a hill forming a headland along the western shore of Hotham Inlet about 5.5 miles/8.8 kilometers south of the mouth of the Wind River.  It rises 456 feet/139 meters directly from the shore, and is a prominent landmark when seen from the water.  From land, however, its relatively gentle slopes tend to obscure its height, and early settlers to the region thought Spanish Head, which lies just to the south and rises more steeply on the landward side as well as jutting out into the inlet, was the taller of the two features.  Pat's Summit takes its name from from Pat von Rhinelander, an early settler and forest warden.  von Rhinelander was reputed to have climbed to the summit daily during the summer and fall months for over 50 years running to aid in spying out forest fires in the dense woods along the inlet.

  • Perch Lake (Lake - SE Quad North Perch Twp, NE Quad South Perch Twp - lat. 49° 00' 10" N / lon. 94° 40' 40" W (center) Map key 5-E)  Perch Lake is a ___ acre/___ hectare lake which straddles the east-central border of 3RR. Its cold clear water supports a wide variety of marine life, including a bumper crop of perch which attract larger game fish which, in turn, attracts a wide variety of hopeful anglers. Leon Island, in the NW quadrant, and the two Burnt Bear Islands in the lake's west-central quadrant, are accessible only by boat, and their ecosystems are closely guarded by the forestry service.

  • Pine Cone Islands (Islands - SE Quad Pine Cone Twp - lat. 48° 46' 31" N / lon. 94° 48' 26" W (center of group) – elev.  1,145 ft./349m amsl (highest point) Map key 8-G)  Located at the toe of Iron Hook Cape about 15 miles/24 kilometers SE of Pineshore, the Pine Cone Islands are a group of five small wooded islets and several individual rocks and shoals.  They are uninhabited, and there is no evidence of historial use by the aboriginal peoples that migrated through the region.  The only structures on the islands are a dock and picnic area on South Pine Cone Island, noted below, and a number of semi-permanent duck blinds that local hunters have built.  The largest island in the group is the southernmost, South Pine Cone Island- it lies about 2,000 feet/650 meters to the west of the end of the cape.  The rest of the group extend to the NNW in a rough line with the small islet that is the furthest north, North Pine Cone Island, located a little more that two miles/3.4 kilometers away.  The islands have a margin of rocky cobble or sand beach around each and are, except for South Pine Cone Island, relatively flat, with all but that island rising only about 30 feet/9 meters above the waters of the Inlet at its highest point.  South Pine Cone Island's highest point is almost 90 feet above the waters of the inlet.  Geologically, they are the western side of the fault that created the cliffs at Nike Site Point (see entry).  The Pine Cone Islands are the centerpiece of a small but popular day-cruise boat enterprise based out of nearby Ellisport (about three miles/five km to the east - see entry)).  These trips ferry tourists and locals alike on a six-hour tour of the five islands and nearby Nike Site Point, where the crumbling remains of a 1950s-vintage air defense battery can still be seen.  During the meandering trip, guests are invited to fish for the abundant Northern and Walleyed Pike of the waters around the islands, play the slot machines on board, enjoy the scenery or simply relax on the sun deck.  A high point of the day is a picnic lunch on the largest island, where a dock and day use facilities have been constructed.  For those who do not have time for the cruise, the Pine Cone Islands can be easily seen from the top of Beacon Hill (see entry) just west of Ellisport.  -Jmouse

  • Pvarcoe (City - NE Quad Granite Twp - lat. 49° 16' 17" N / lon. 95° 15' 37" W - elev. 883 ft/269 m amsl.)  Pvarcoe is a charter city located just south of 3RR's border with Canada.  It lies in a low saddle between the foothills of the western Northern Range and the Lexington Hills.  It derives its name from an original station established on the Duluth, Winnipeg & Western ("DW&W") railroad line when it was constructed through the area in 1871; the origin of the name Pvarcoe itself is unknown.  Population (2007 est.): 10,000.  Local Government:  Mayor, 5 member City Council.  Police and Fire:  Regional Trooper Post #4, Rural Fire Service Station #17.  Medical Services:  Small not-for-profit hospital and associated clinic, privately run open to public emergency care facility.  Postal Service:  City Postal Station #18.  Postal Code: A018.  Air Service:  General aviation, runway length 3,800 ft/1,160 m paved.  Rail Service:  Passenger, freight.  History and General Information:  The farthest north reaches of Three Rivers Region were not known to be permanently inhabited until the 1860s, when a few hardy settlers homesteaded the area after building a rude corduroy road from the eastern end of Upper Taylor Lake.  The area and the low pass through the Northern Range just over the border into Canada were determined by an 1870 surveying party to be the best route north of Pineshore for the DW&W RR line to Winnipeg, and rails reached the place that has become the city from Pineshore in September, 1871.  When construction halted there for the season, a station and construction camp called Pvarcoe Station was established.  By 1890, the area's population had grown to the requisite 500 inhabitants needed to apply for a city charter, and one was granted on August 1, 1891.  Due to its relative isolation, in that roads (the corduroy road was quickly abandoned after the railroad was built) did not reach the area until 1919, Pvarcoe developed more or less on its own, and today benefits from the wealth of historic buildings in its downtown dating from the turn of the 20th century.  The city also developed as a service and supply area for local mines located in the Lexington Hills and mountains to the west.  A small deposit of upsidaisium was discovered on the northern slopes of Mount Zelo, just west of Pvarcoe, in 1928, creating a short-lived boom during which the city's population swelled to twice its current size of 10,000.  A 3RR customs office was established in Pvarcoe in 1938.  During the latter half of the 20th century, the city's population and its fortunes remained relatively stable.  It is one of the most attractive small cities in the region, and has begun to attract a growing number of bed and breakfast operations and business supporting the steady stream of backpackers and other outdoor enthusiasts who have "discovered" Pvarcoe.  A large ski area and lodge development is proposed on the eastern slopes of Mount Zelo, but the controversy over whether this represents acceptable development has held up permitting for almost 10 years and, to some degree, polarized the community into ski area supporters and "aginners."  Many now doubt the area will ever be built, and especially given the region's current freeze on new economic development revenue sharing.  The "Deux Tetons Climate Change Research Facility" was sited and built just southwest of the city at the base of the mountains of the same name as a joint US/Canada/3RR project, commencing operations in 1997.  The facility has become both a major employer and contributor to the city's economy.  A community campus of 3RR University is also located in Pvarcoe, with 950 students in full-time attendance.

  • Thunder Bay (Unincorporated Place - NE Quad South Cold Twp - lat. 49° 03' 07" N / lon. 95° 07' 42" W - elev. 843 ft/257 m amsl. Map key4-D)  Thunder Bay is a small urbanized area and associated environs located on the southern shore of Cold Lake about .25 miles/.4 kilometers W of the outflow into Cold River.  It takes its name from the bay on which it fronts.  Population (2000 est.): 375.  Local Government:  None.  Police and Fire:  Regional Trooper Post #317, Rural Fire Service Station #43.  Medical Services:  Privately run open to public emergency care facility.  Postal Service:  Rural Postal Station #16.  Air Service:  None.  Rail Service:  None (Abandoned 1951).  History and General Information:  There are records of persons inhabiting the Thunder Bay area and a small store being located there dating back to the 1840s.  By 1850, and as a result of the discovery of the rich Cold Lake fishery, the Cold Lake-Hotham Riverboat Line was established, and Thunder Bay, as the first stop on the lake after transiting the Cold River, quickly became a small regional center for the other Cold Lake shoreline communities and surrounding farmed areas.  The Pineshore-Cold Lake Railroad reached the area in the 1870s and, for a time, it appeared that Thunder Bay, despite the railroad having caused the failure of the riverboat line, would become a substantial community.  These dreams died, however, when the rural road system, by the early 1900s, had developed to the point where the fishery's catch and farming harvest could be trucked directly to market in Pineshore.  The railroad ended regular passenger service in the 1930s and was abandoned about 20 years later.  Thunder Bay's population in 1940 was about 75 people.  Things, however, began to look up by the 1970s, as Thunder Bay began a revival based on sport fishing, the establishment of several nearby resorts, and from the development of associated services businesses.  The area also became an increasingly popular location for shoreline second homes.  With the opening in 1981 of F-17, which has an exit just .5 miles/.8 kilometers from Thunder Bay, some daily commuting even began, although it is likely that rapidly rising real estate prices, along with the fact that much of the environs remains under cultivation, will serve to limit this trend.

  • Thunder Crack (Gorge/Cascades - NE Quad Curtiss Twp - lat. 48° 46' 42" N / lon. 95° 23' 09" W - elev. 833 ft/254 m amsl. Map key 8-B)  Thunder Crack is a very narrow .1 mile/620 meter defile at the base of Shadow Canyon, which contains the headwaters and upper drainage of the West Fork of the Little Leaf River.  The river cascades through the bottom of the gorge between sheer walls of Mississipian granite that are, at the narrowest point, only 15 feet/4.6 meters apart while towering over 160 feet/50 meters overhead.  The volume of flow is an astounding 4,990 cubic feet/141 cubic meters per second.  Although the total drop of the cascades is relatively small, the high volume coupled with narrow gorge walls and large number of vehicle size boulders, many shattered and knife-edged, make these the only "Class VII" whitewater rapids in the world- runnable only by the certifiably insane.  The early settlers of the upper Little Leaf River area named the gorge and cascades in the 1850s.

Map key 7-H)  Truro is a small urbanized area and associated environs located about midway down the Iron Hook Cape on the eastern shore of Hotham Inlet 3.4 miles/5.6 kilometers by road S of the city of Des Plaines.  The urban center extends a small distance either side of where Regional Route 9, the main road up and down the cape, crosses Truro Creek.  Population (2000 est.): 138.  Local Government:  None.  Police and Fire:  Served by Regional Trooper Post #12 (Des Plaines), Rural Fire Service Station #16 (Des Plaines).  Medical Services:  Privately run open to public emergency care facility.  Postal Service:  Rural Postal Station #38.  Air Service:  None.  Rail Service:  None.  History and General Information:  Truro apparently had its origins in the 1850s as a fishing camp located at the ford across Truro Creek on the trail between Des Plaines and Ellisport.  A small store and private wooden toll bridge were built by one R. Rooker in the 1880s, and the area became known as Rookers as a result.  In the 1920s the area's residents, hoping to attract some of the summer home development that was occurring along the north shore of the inlet between Pineshore and Des Plaines along the DW&W's Des Plaines Spur line by having the line extended south, renamed the area Truro after the popular beachfront town on Cape Cod.  While the line was never built, Truro did gain its own post office and quite a number of summer guest cottages and small resorts.  Rooker's Store, by then operated by great-grandchildren, operated until the start of World War II, when gas rationing and other economic conditions proved too big a challenge to remain in business.  In the 1950s, Regional Route 9 was paved (the last major stretch of secondary highway in the region to have this done), and this only served to further increase the popularity of the area.  By the 1970s, local residents were pretty much uniformly opposed to further development; and this opposition has continued through the current date.  Referenda to incorporate and establish a city government were defeated in 1975, 1993, and most recently 2005.  Despite this opposition, however, the Truro area has grown at an estimated 20-25 residents per year since the year 2000, and a number of McMansions have been built fringes, and in particular along Truro Creek and on the western slopes of Truro Hill.
