Hello guys,

I have lost the Motivation to go on with my Port Project, I just had to big to do list, and well I wanted to play a bit Simcity 4 instead to do obnly batting, but well it reversed into its opposite :D
I fell in love with the Soviet and the usual eastern european Style. So I started a couple of eastern european styled BATs and well I wanted to show you some of them and of course the progress on them.

The first BATs are 2 blocks from Moscow But currently I'm not really happy with the textures, I'm going to revise them.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F16dfc931a661a46212987cca4ea1d0db.png&hash=aaae5cc99b44368911e0289eca6e03154681f5b4) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/98127)

After those I battet an other larger block from Moscow
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fe819482afccd905ef59c1a7ee30cd2a9.png&hash=f1cb6ef8c88b6e53d523ae77c4ccb57cda6d1b17) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/99647)

Well then I also startet some W2Ws based on some buildings from Moscow, as well
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Ff55ff9953a123655b8d4e5d4cd0940f0.png&hash=039de28262bfeda130ab8dd2797185f0326d6286)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fc6503881ec4047674c687dc40c44b8f7.png&hash=3ca836c509d9e425104821fef900dc104552dfc8)(http://)

And these below are also from Moscow  ;D (I love those really ugly buildings there  $%Grinno$% )
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F984abec96513fb2f09accdf68bf95a9b.png&hash=e11fc808300ef47423521a8133206f8b71b1db0e) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/108053)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F2b6080070cd4b8ee5ef3f663bd99e0c4.png&hash=8d303b7bb6cc59759414828d620144e6cdd5e61d) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/108077)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F529046b72fc9413dad33f97d8be29d1f.png&hash=f6428a6faeb17a47deae3e3b38abbadd3710c0dd) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/108082)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F4658ed91cb210498b56e8718e922fead.png&hash=898833ac3e0993bfa3a3e72fe6fc8741cec12c7a) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/108091)

Then something not so ugly and more famous (but it's just a small part of this project)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fd544c7e0048968abdca5cffcb40e7b98.png&hash=8d2542455f4560ded5fd30dfdc0040b72ec10b4e)

Here you see something what reminds to my old port project, maybe somewhen I will bat again things like that ;)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fff2da3a8249509fb2ded39d3e04bebbc.png&hash=3546722e43225f5fec0be7b12387cf21cd414bf3) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/111204)

And here again an unfinished arpartment block from Moscow
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F44f9201d10add567a44e86cbbcf6d31b.png&hash=0acd63c0b15eed2bfaef2f509d4d700d5460cf06) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/113833)

And here my latest and also unfished project the Nowosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. I just started it yesterday.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F7ea55b99ea40c6ec6e782d74642de5ed.png&hash=3305417348cc5fe89168aab966bf9d4271f6e5c5) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/114644)

As you can see allmost every project isn't finsihed yet :D When the Opera is done I'm going to finish some of the other buildings before I'm going to start new projects :)

Feel free to ask Questions or offer criticism about the BATs

I hope anyone out there likes these BATs  :)

Nice to see a new post in the SFBT team thread. Your work looks very nice some of those apartment buildings (although soviet) look similar to many ghetto apartment developments that were in the US during the 1940s-1990s the only ones remaining still being mostly in NYC. Hope to see more from you and love what you have so far.

Thanks for all those nice comments  :)

thinhfish and gottaga: Well  on monday I had much time because I wasn't in school because I had a headache in the morning but the headache went away over the day so I startet batting the Nowosbirsk Opera  ;)

Yesterday I had no time for batting, today I could go on a bit with the Nowosbirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, its not much progress just a little work on the modelling of the dome

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fb0438eaacab3080be7047780294e9776.png&hash=ab4694a5271d34836b22e9e25ace4c2aed048400) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/115146)

I hope I will get the modelling mostly done on the weekend

Well you work with great speed, and it doesn't look like your work is suffering any for it either. (showoff ;))

I think it looks great, I'm keen for more HQ fine art venues in SC4. There's really not enough...

First of all thanks for all those nice comments, here. I'm glad that you like my BATs  :)

Well after a long abstinence here, caused of school, there ins't much to show today

A few Days ago, I puuled out some commie blocks I made about 5 months ago and spruced them up a bit. Well after all I got 30 versions of those blocks  ;D
And well here they are on 3 15x15 test lots
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs10.directupload.net%2Fimages%2F100401%2Ftemp%2Fda23hv3z.jpg&hash=b7284e81f120df6bd3ffecca863df81bf9ba78b9) (http://s10.directupload.net/file/d/2116/da23hv3z_jpg.htm)
Well you don't really see much of the blocks itself. So here some preview render pics
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs10.directupload.net%2Fimages%2F100401%2Ftemp%2Ffb9oie5u.png&hash=34c02cf3ec0504bff0e49429d195c2f8b8a26cc5) (http://s10.directupload.net/file/d/2116/fb9oie5u_png.htm)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs10.directupload.net%2Fimages%2F100401%2Ftemp%2Fvmtiddz7.png&hash=04f8f7f9e80f80d104191876eb2525849f4fad99) (http://s10.directupload.net/file/d/2116/vmtiddz7_png.htm)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs10.directupload.net%2Fimages%2F100401%2Ftemp%2F88r38ydg.png&hash=8689c3bda9584ec43f672f09667edd3caeb69cec) (http://s10.directupload.net/file/d/2116/88r38ydg_png.htm)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs10.directupload.net%2Fimages%2F100401%2Ftemp%2Fwd6mluur.jpg&hash=30da9f83f9fb08e4d5e7ddcd5f45f9fc75045571) (http://s10.directupload.net/file/d/2116/wd6mluur_jpg.htm)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs10.directupload.net%2Fimages%2F100401%2Ftemp%2Fvkk6jopa.png&hash=56d01342220e97fa863811281a3841489a1375e6) (http://s10.directupload.net/file/d/2116/vkk6jopa_png.htm)
(Even if I think nobody here wants to live in one of those blocks, I hope you like them :D )

Before I was just too busy with school I was able to continue a bit the work on the Nowosibirsk Opera, but it isn't really much.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs10.directupload.net%2Fimages%2F100401%2Ftemp%2Fj3kl7lz8.jpg&hash=ca77211905f17b0fa4b7d13be3f711a0d0e0a089) (http://s10.directupload.net/file/d/2116/j3kl7lz8_jpg.htm)

And the last weekend I just made 2 small towers of the kremlin walls but it's also not really noteworthy in my opinion
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs10.directupload.net%2Fimages%2F100401%2Ftemp%2F9na9subt.png&hash=e0df0fa2e2be15d83a62fcb2ffee67ab36c4682a) (http://s10.directupload.net/file/d/2116/9na9subt_png.htm)

But even it isn't much what I did the last weeks I hope you like it  :)

Feel free to offer criticism  ;)

Edit (UTC+0 21:38): It seems the server of my picture-hosting service is down a for longer time. I re-uploaded the pictures.

Thanks io_bg  :)

After fixing some FSH problems, I was able to create a connecting piece between the diagonal and orthogonal commie blocks.

OOooooo! Love that  building...it would be great for a orth-diagonal piece yo bad you cannot overhang growables. Love how the others for this new set look. Very detailed and remind me of some places in the Bronx in New York City.

@SimNation: they really remind you to playes of the Bronx? Interesting, because my commie blocks are based on some from Moscow :D

@Guillaume: Thanks  :)

I just added some more details on the connections pieces, and I was trying out one of many possibilities how to put these block-props together :)

Holy cow! I can't believe I never stopped by here before. Suffice it to say, I want everything you are working on...very badly...

Fantastic work and keep it up. Your texture and detail work is amazing. Some of those commie blocks are other worldly good, especially upon close inspection of the more minute details such as terraces and windows.

After I had to solve some problems with my PC and 3dsmax, I started another (really ugly :D ) commie block.

I like Russian style and the churches in Kremlin are very beautiful and I think some people are interested by these kind of buildings for their cities.

I think about batting shop "goum" in the red square but I haven't started it's for this reason I like the work you have done about Kremlin  :)

In another part, the last building is so nice

I agree with Girafe, I also like the russian architectural style (mainly commie blocks  :D :D ) The two last pictures of the blocks are really awesome, excellent work with the manipulable one, I think this will come one of the most awesome thing over the exchanges. Great work too with the Kremlin walls, can't wait to put my hans on this !

@Girafe: Wow you're reallay thinking about batting the GUM? That's something I've been waiting for (If there weren't all those ornates I would try it myself, but thats nothing for me  $%Grinno$% )

@art128: Somehow I love this monotony of hundreds of commie blocks, there and well that is what I'm trying to make possible ;D

Well after I was otherwise engaged, I grabbed my latest block and worked a bit on it, and here is the current result.

I'm always up for buildings that look like this one, but the roof top is too repeatative.  I would suggest you get rid of all the roof top doors except for two or three of them.  And maybe even add a cellular tower on the roof.
Just a suggestion.

I have to agree with that, and maybe a satellite dish as well?

Although Commie blocks are not really my cup of tea (too repetitive in my opinion, I prefer Parisian and Belgian architecture), I do like the look of it.

First, thanks for all these comments   :)

@rooker1:I also wasn't sure about the roof, but I think the ways up there are needed to get from every staircase to the rooftop. But I added some small antennas to break out a bit of this reapeating. But the roof is still not final ;)

For everybody who is also interested on the original Blocks from moscow which, my block are based on, here (http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/6371293.jpg) is a picture of them

I think it looks much better now.  Adding in the entrances to the bottom now makes the roof top stairs more sense.

Awesome. Looks like my own house. I'm living in Kursk and we have uglier blocks than in Moscow =\

PS what about some playgrounds, small asphalt (yeah, Russians have hard childhood=)) soccerfield between buildings in your big block?

Beautiful work here!

You are making those in Bat4Max, right? What is a version of 3dsMax you're using??

Thanks for all these comments  :)

@xenofeel: Yes, in comparison to blocks from other parts of the former soviet union the commie blocks in moscow are somehow "nice"  ;D And yes I'm also planning to do some props like playgrounds, soccerfields and so on to fill the huge spaces between my blocks on the lots ;)

@Simfox:I'm currently using 3dsmax 9 and Chrisadams' Bat4max.

Yesterday I grabbed out the crane I showed as I opened this thread and finished it.
Here are a few pics of the crane from my test city  :)

And after I finished the crane yesterday I began batting a fictional industrial building It's almost done now:

i like the industrial building. Looks like it will fit into the game nicely. The walls look good and the squared off skylights are different than the usual sawtooth style.

Very good BAT!

One question, how big is this?

And a suggestion/request: Instead of making the BAT and the Lot, I would like to ask developers to only make the building BAT and exemplar, and include it in the Maxis building families. Indeed, I believe Maxis has done a wonderful (yes!) job as far as lots are concerned. The problem is that the building collection is quite limited, and as a result you get the same buildings again and again. For example, for a new city I almost always start with MPR Metals and Dao Chemicals for industry - sometimes I get Farley's Foundry. A similar situation is with commercial and residential buildings, and the problem is exacerbated if you only allow one building style in your city. If you look at the building families you will find that most familes comprise only one (!) or two members. So my suggestion is to expand these families by adding new buildings. Of course their footprint should be roughly the same as the Maxis ones, and the stats similar, so that they fit into the Maxis lots nicely and don't cause trouble to gameplay.

Thanks guys  :)

@Cogeo: The building is needs not less than 4x10 or 10x4 tiles.
Your idea is really not bad, the main Problem about this is that you need very similar footprints. And If you'd take larger buildings like this one you'd need to pack buildings from different creators in one family (but I think this wouldn't be a big problem in our community ;) ) But smaller buildings could probably use the technique which you had described well and improve the variety in the game.

Wow I love both versions. Large fabrication or assembly facilities like this are really rare in the community still. They remind me so much of home (in that bleak, urban decay kind of way) that I will definitely gobble these up as soon as they are released. Kudos on the nightlights too by the way. The detail here is great.

Thanks Guys   :)

@Girafe: Actually the beton version was based on a soviet design but somehow the brick design looks almost more soviet liek :D

Well I started yesterday another bigger industrial building inspired by some photos of some industrial areas from moscow:

Title: Re: Sam Johnson's BAT Bunker
Post by: Sam Johnson on May 17, 2010, 12:27:35 PM
Thanks  :)
Well Girafe, mostly I prepare all my textures in Photoshop. For example I take a concrete Textur for the walls, then I adjust the colour of the texture and add new layers with dirt, and whatever is needed. For my commieblocks as another example I also trace the lines between the plates for a more derelict look.
In 3dsmax I only add sometimes bump maps, and almost always I tweak the brightness

P.S. the roof texture of the industrial buildings was originally a picture of the roof of a small garden shed, but with photoshop it's currently one my most used textures for roofs :D

As I started batting textures were the biggest problem for mine, but today it seems like I'm getting along with it ;)

Thanks rooker1  :)

Yes you're right the bricks are a bit to clean for this bildung, I added a bit more dirt but I'm sure if it's enough so far.
And it will take 13x5 tiles in game at least.

Well I was trying out ways for nightlighting this, but the usual ways weren't looking good in my view. Then as someone meant it could be a foundry I wanted to bat some "low poly" things of the inside but well it got a bit out of control  ;D

the modeling it top notch, but the visualization, unfortunately not... It is way to dark and lighting in neither here no there (meaning neither sunny side nor shadow looks good/compatible to game) I don't want it to sound like a shameless plug, but you should really give a try for Bat4Max 4.5 and its lighting rig and render settings to see what it can give your models.

Apart from that the general rule of thumb is not to allow things falling into pitch black abyss. Only small details, portions may be close to black. Otherwise it will look weird in game.
Title: Re: Sam Johnson's BAT Bunker
Post by: Sam Johnson on May 30, 2010, 11:16:10 AM
Well I really respect your work about bat4max 4.5 and let there be light, SimFox. But I personally think the lighting of your light rigs doesn't fit well enough in the game. Of course this kind of lighting is probably the most realistic, but in my opinion it's much more important to that the different BATs ingame harmize well.
I tried out your bat4max and your let there be light a several times but the most times the textures of my BATs look weird with it.
Well I tried your bat4max today again. And at the blast furnace it doesn't work well in my opinion.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F24fb37cbb5186574d92d7ed7d3f23741.png&hash=f618c0dc12401161c4193ee7e208a4c4a96c1446) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/138114)

On this block it works better with the textures, but it takes really long to render on my system (even if I adjust some final gathering settings)

Because I'm currently not sure which kind of lighting is the best I tried to create a similar light rig like yours  it works better but the colours are still a bit cold. Maybe I gonna work a bit on it.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fdb54423d4e278d9df7757db590316ed6.png&hash=f34d419263a00b5c467c51385961be5eb9c1f69a) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/138107)

The Lightrig I'm using at the moment usually is mainly based on the lightrig which are used in gmax I only changed the way the shadows are casted, so I think it should fit well in game and I got some affirmation in the german community.

Well I'd like to hear some more Opinions about this, because I'm not sure about this as you see .

Well testing it (my rig) with your textures (already created adjusted to your rig is an unfair comparison.
Instead you have to test it on a so called clay render. Create a mid-gray material (50% neutral gray) and assign it as a over-ride material in Mental ray  - this way you don't really need to replace any of your current materials on the models to do the purely light tests.
Render and see the difference. I made LTBL rig not to be most realistic, in fact it isn't, but to be most fitting the game environment. It actually provide lighting similar to that of original GMAX and MAX(in case of Maxis) rigs on a simple cube, but doesn't have their shortcoming when complex shapes are introduced

Lighting rig in GMAX was never intended for anything but a simple box shaped models. It fails miserably on any complex shapes. You can't use but it is original advocacy on it either. Maxis didn't have really complex shapes in game. I'm sure for that very reason. Also one should be careful not to mix "i accustomed to" with "fitting".

Textures... well those will have to be adjusted to the rig in use. However rig does MUCH more then simply create some color.
So try clay renders with both rigs and see the difference.

PS remember to make sure that gamma settings are correct with my rigs - that is a crucial detail.

Well I compared both rigs without textures (gamma settings were correct of course the shadows look in your light rig more realistic and some details are a bit better displayed, but somehow from my point of view I don't like the way it lights up everything.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F68c78ba9986b5c25cb3b890d2fbbf3fb.png&hash=ccbe74403d1953f9fd5d68dbc09e2033ba0ebe20) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/138338)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fde6f622a33ec09bacc47a630d8625eeb.png&hash=3f690f161de595b199557ccf67521676bdfa2f0a) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/138339)
Even on some BATs on that my Textures were adjusted to your Rig it doesn't look that way I wanted it sorry. Because of that I gonna use for now my Rig. I also don't see on BATs of other creators with similar Light rigs as mine, any problems with many lost details or a unfitting kind of lighting.
But about the maxis Rigs..these Rigs are in some way really bad looking. I espacially think that there loose shadows make some models look bad.

But could you give the reasons why you think your rig fits best into the game environment? Maybe then I'll feel confident about your Rig.

However there is also a bit modelling and texturing on the blast furnace progress to show  ;)

that's an impressive structure Sam &apls

There's things I like and don't like about all of those light setups. The first LTBL one shows up a lot more detail and makes the whole thing look less pastel (which I think is a good thing for an industrial BAT), but it seems too dark in places with a too high contrast between the areas that are right and those that aren't. The other LTBL ones look washed out to me. Your original one is even and good, but maybe lacks a bit of the punch of the first LTBL one. That's how it struck me anyway...

@Girafe: Well those yellow lights are molten iron and slag, in RL this is even a bit more flashy  ;)

After the blast furnace was done, I decided to create more furnaces and other facilities of a steel mill, so I started a facility containing an open hearth furnace:

As they say "picture speaks a thousand words"... However they forget to add "to those who can or prepared to listen"
I would think that this illustration makes quite an obvious case... But I can word it too...
First of all your rig is too dark. Second it to a large degree kills all the details in the shadows plus flattens them. This is a complex issue and has to do with both the rig itself and other rendering settings that are set by LtbL and, apparently, not set in your system. Plus, there is an issue of materials. In order to get your model to come to life it is very important to have properly set materials. And I mean exactly materials now, not a well painted bitmap (at what you're clearly excelled). All in all those shortcomings created completely bizarre and "inverted" situation in the shade. And one, I'm very sure, can't really refer to the game here. The rig in GMAX BAT and one used in production of original models was not adequate for a complex shapes, and so, by no accident, there weren't any. Virtually all models were simple boxes. Whenever they diverge to any significant degree from that basic shape the problems were obvious and they actually do stand out from the rest of the game.
So, today when there are much better tools available I can't understand clinging to that old and clearly deficient setup. Mind you I'm not calling for the break with game conventions, just taking it to the modern age, allowing complex shapes being brought to game with both degree of realism, and, crucially, fitting with the basic simple shapes that dominate the game.
You called my rig realistic. But it is not. At least not from the point of hue. It is designed not for real sun and sky illumination but for the game sun and sky. It also takes care of that slid pinkish toning of the sunny areas that people tried to implement with textures. Of course with textures it doesn't quite work cause there is no way to control this hue depending on the illumination in game.

The same issue is also present/visible in both the night view of the furnace and your response to the remark of the molten iron...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi082.radikal.ru%2F1006%2F32%2F9dbec451550b.jpg&hash=dcf596894f116ac8c4ad5fefcd58928955c9fcb5)

I'm reasonably sure that Girafe meant by "flashy" is not the simple fact of hue or even brightness, but the fact how it is completely jumps/falls out of its environment.  It looks like it has been cut out of entirely different picture and glued into this render. Something so intensely colored and bright will most definitely affect it environment. Yet in your case right next to this, basically bright orange light source, you have quite dark/darkish and very bluish environment. Don't you see that this is not right? (blue arrows)
To make things even more bizarre orange does make its way to some of the geometry, however, to some of the very unlikely places (pink arrows).
Another problem or better put inconsistency is pointed by white arrows. Such a total overblown highlight potentially possible if, for instance we are talking of polished still or something and the lights set just right, so that you actually see the straight reflection of the light itself – not impossible given geometry curvature. But if one looks on the day render – there is nothing of the sots. I mean the material applied to the geometry. Incidentally the brightness of the molten iron in the day view is also way over the top.
All those "small things" are particularly upsetting cause they really letting down this very impressive piece of work.

Saying that you have adjusted your textures to my rig and they still didn't look the way you wanted them ... well it basically saying that you haven't adjusted them right, doesn't it?
One of the most important considerations I had when making rigs was to keep them overall neutral. Meaning that with all the toning etc going on the colors would remain recognizable - blue will be blue, green green, white white. So, in a way no adjustment is really needed for my rig.

PS
in the end this is your work, and you 're it's master. I'm not really to change that. No am set to change your opinions/enforce mine once. All I'm after is to point put things that are problematic in my opinion. What, if any, you'll do with it is up to you...

Well, the molten metal is in a channel so it's effectively a shuttered light source, forcing all light upwards... and we know that light travels in a straight line (unless acted upon).  There should however be some ambient bounce but I think that's reproduced sufficiently well.

BUT... You may want to add light sources into the "wells" that the metal is channeled into

All in all an exceptional model and nicely lit.  However, I would agree with SF that the burnout on the domes is too excessive.... maybe reduce the intensity somewhat, or change the falloff.

I feel it should be a bit more orange, I don't feel there is quite enough ambient bounce.  And you do need to get rid of the leaks (pink arrows).

The model is gorgeous however, great detail.

You'd be surprised at just how little molten metal radiates light...most of it's energy is expended in heat.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww2.2space.net%2Fimages%2Fupl_newsImage%2F1262853003.jpg&hash=5e2ca68235b2bba6e90989ea5226d0b4093d72e2)

Look at the floor bottom right by the pit... see how it's quite dark.  Generally as well these types of buildings have high roofs and non-reflective surfaces (soot is a great light absorber) so there is little in the way of ambient bounce.

As for the colour, it's OK, but needs breaking up.  Sam, why not try adding a noise filter to the texture, making it more "patchy"?

@SimFox: You say my Lightrig is too dark, can you please explain why? It sounds a bit like (sorry for directness): "it's too dark because my lightrig is brighter"
QuoteOne of the most important considerations I had when making rigs was to keep them overall neutral. Meaning that with all the toning etc going on the colors would remain recognizable - blue will be blue, green green, white white. So, in a way no adjustment is really needed for my rig.
Well, somehow this lightrig test without textures shows something different:

----------------------------------------------------------

To the molten iron, well as callagrafx said and showed with a picture the light of the is absorded well by the materials and the architecture of the casthouses.
I have to say I wasn't completly happy with the texture of the molten iron but I stopped trying out solutions for now. But, because of your constructive criticism I had some new ideas for making the iron better and well here's the current result:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F2bf5447e042d1b8a97ce4f1b459d699a.png&hash=0c19e90e8895dae53d93ea77f989d5455b2ecfe2)
(you probably notice that the night is brighter than in the other pictures thats my blame, I used in chrisadams bat4max the maxis night mode but this mode seems to be darker than the original maxis night. As of now I gonna use the day/night mode for creating night previews, this modes makes the night-preview looking in the same way it will look ingame ;) )

And I also reduced the intensity of the lights around the cowper stoves, I think thats OK so far

If you'll check saturation levels you'll find that it is always higher with you rig on what is suppose to be color neutral tone. So, that means my one produces more neural color.
If you do a test render with GMAX you'll also see that your rig produces result that is about 8-10% darker than that of GMAX rig. Mine one produces result that is about same 8% brighter. I wet to brighter side cause with my rig there is very little if any danger of blow-outs/burn-outs. even if you select pure white as defuse color you wouldn't get blown our surface unless it is right angle to the sun. Keeping this in mind I decided that it is better to give some extra room in the shadows to help bring more definition there, as default rig had biggest deficiency there. Your rig only makes that deficiency stronger. That's why I say that your rig is too dark.

Also you have to make more consistent molten iron thing.. I mean it appear to be brighter at day in direct sun light, than at night. It also appears to be tinted by sun light.
It is kind of double wrong. First of all molten iron should appear brighter at night view and pretty dim at day. But at the same time it probably should be affected/tinted by sunlight.

About bouncing light... I must confess I didn't figured out that molten iron was in the recessed channel sort of thing...

Apart from that it looks fantastic

You see this one isn't done, there's still a bit work to do. And the cyrillic logo is just thought for my own use :P I don't think everybody likes huge cyrillic logos in his cities :D

But The steel mill is a huge project, as you can probably imagine, so there's still a lot work to do, but i hope you like the current progress :)

So during the sommer I had a break of batting. But now I did some new things  :)

At first I remade this small block from the first post
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F1bc039cd0b512a3a6d710c969eef49ea.jpg&hash=eac1b178de9751a98d240996b9c67ea51fb3a636) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/149355)

Then I made some small russian river ships, like they can be found on the huge rivers in russia or other former soviet countries.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fd53ffda997c99fe500ed28adf5624d97.jpg&hash=e880321ac05ddc2190a7a2585c8cfb328a717306) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/149397)

And today I just finished a big (very luxurious  $%Grinno$% ) appartment block from moscow
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fa74f51fec7d4f8a07c8399fa83710489.jpg&hash=9abf0112416ae9db83936226f063fa099d7aba03) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/150261)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fa7aa69d232304a5375019de79d3ce169.jpg&hash=4dfa8e6c148e44b17e76e9fb3a2567ae4ee20ac5) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/150262)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fd46e29e9dc641bade6e3b21979023f54.jpg&hash=01442e07f6452463d7b5a7e4b4aff495aef01265) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/150267)(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fa2beac8157aa810a3f2d4d48557c9451.jpg&hash=842ba082c73027ce8c9f0f742625d144795a5264) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/150286)

After school started the everyday life stole some time from me, so theres only something small today.
A small soviet elementary school like it can be found between all these prefab blocks in the former soviet union.

About the kremlin walls: I unfortunately need to tell you that I cancelled the project temporarily. At the moment I don't when I'm going to continue this project. Some other soviet BAT Projects have a higher priority for me. But It probably won't take long you'll see the results of these "other" projects ;)

@Arthur: Exactly, it's the Moscow State University :D

@Ciuu96:Thank you :)

@mightygoose: Right somewhen a few months ago a preview rendering of it appeared on ST, but you probably can't imagine how difficult it was to get in into the game :P

Almost a year ago, I finished the modelling, texturing and nightlighting at this BAT, but it seemed as because of an amount of rendering problems and problems with my PC there's no way to get it into the game. It took about 4 weeks to bat it, but it took about one year to get rid of the frustration and to try again bringing it into the game. And well finally I've got it. It's done. The Moscow State University is completly rendered and now in Simcity 4 :)

Title: Re: Sam Johnson's BAT Bunker
Post by: Sam Johnson on December 29, 2010, 04:50:54 AM
At first I'm really surprised about all these positive comments, thank you for that :)

art128: Well I think there shouldn't be a problem to change the ground texture with the Lot Editor ;)

Girafe: The Building is just too huge to render it as one building, so I decided to split it up into 4 parts. The biggest part is the main tower at the center, then the big wing of the building with its two small towers and then the both outer wings. It was also needed to split the building up because, the Lot would have a size of 32x20 tiles, and this way the object limit per lot would'nt allow to create a good looking lot. The object limit is set at ~1200 objects, with objects are base textures, overlay textures, props, teh building and everything else on the lot meant. And with a lot size of 32x20 only the base textures would take 640 objects. So I also splitted up the Lots, now I'm having 3 Lots, one lot has the size 14x20, and two lots with a size of 9x20 tiles.
About the nighlighting, well I did this in 3dsmax 9 with chrisadams bat4max and I used only simple techniques like placing and adjusting spotlights and omnis, like it's done on every BAT :D Only for the windows I used the technique of a night library ;)

@ciuu96:Oh I'm sorry that was my mistake. Of course I will avoid this in future  &ops

And again thank you all :)
