This may sound strange but breaking something allows you to understand it in more depth. Knowing what can't be done is just as important as knowing what can be done. Then a solution can be applied or at least ruled out.

EDITSo true, my friend.  So true. -DE

NAM is coming. That's really great news. I'm totally excited for 2009 ;D.
300... 200... 100... 50... 40... 30... 20... 10

Yep, I still got it.

And more about 2009, along with further explorations into last year, tomorrow.

I get so excited thinking about what this year is going to bring in terms of SC4 developments. This is a great time to be a city-building gamer.  ;D

It's no problem at all, David.  At least there is still hope for this to work, when the new NAM is released.  3RR has truly inspired me to rethink SC4.  I remember those days, when I first saw this thread.  I knew that it had to be a big deal, and was I ever right.  Oh, the memories...  :)  Keep going, David.

EDIT:  I just know I heard a bell sound when Buddybud walked in here.  It seems to have coincided with a double-0 post, 6300 to be exact.

OK, it's quiz time again...

As I noted last year, this one's pretty easy- the answers are right there in front of you, and there's a million ways to cheat...

...I still won't tell you how- that would be, heh... cheating...

...anyway, as we did a year ago, we've identified a very, very select group of folks.  These are those 3RR Regulars* who have such a sense of self-restraint that they stopped by, commented once, and then stood aside, probably laughing behind their hands as I tried to puzzle out what I did right just that one time.

So, here they are once again, the 66 3RR Regulars who, during 2008, left just that one comment.  Well, actually, here are their avatars and nics.  Just like last year, we've scrambled them- how quickly can you match them back up?  Our friend Joan (Jmouse) solved this in record time last year [linkie].

I've once again zipped the table and attached it below to make it easier for you to post your answers.  Or, if you don't want to futz around with zip files, just do a list numbered 1-66, with number one starting with the avatar at the top.  Please note that a number of our regulars choose to go sans avatar, don't let that hold you up.  As usual, one attempt to answer per post, and no editing, please.  Try as many times as you like- Joan's record last year will take some quick work to surpass.

Best of luck!

David

EDITValiant try, my friend.  A couple that are off, and your sequencing wound up one off for part of the list.  The question mark at number 40 overlooks someone whose name is on the original list.  I have gone back and corrected the spelling of Allan's (allan_kuan1992) and N1_2888's nics.  Thanks for catching those- you are now a 3RR Fact Checker, and I will expect that you will continue to catch me whenever I make my couple of mistakes each year...

...thank heaven we got the ones for 2009 out of the way early...

Anyway, let's see another try or two before we start narrowing things a bit

Gasp! I'm on that list! If only I'd posted that second comment a few days earlier...!

I downloaded the FARR beta that was attached to a post a few pages back. Did anyone else notice a significant slowdown of the game when FARR is used? Especially when zooming and scrolling?
I didn't have the time yet to investigate this further so I am not entirely sure if it is related to the FARR or if something else is wrong. But so far I have noticed this only in cities with FARR roads.  ()what()

Second comment, also a bit too late.  ::)

EDITYes, but you've got this year's made way early, my friend.  As for the slowdown- there's some slowdown issues associated in using the NAM Team's latest controller without the ton of other new stuff that it, well... controls.  I think once the FARR shows up as part of the whole NAM package, you won't continue to experience slower play. -DE

When alot of these items are switched from separate to core, it really does make a significant difference. I have FARR/country roads and not have experienced major differences.

Is it safe to use the new diagonal rail crossing yet? :/ Just read a lot of the problems people have been having on here and decided to wait to put it in my game...

OMG I'm on a list! (I don't know if that is good or bad  &ops) I have downloaded the dia rail crossing and they look great! no problems with my game at all, I am eagerly awating the rest of the rail pieces, keep up the good work!

-----------------------

Where the hell is my AVATAR!  :angrymore:

jpj_starfleet, that is not an appropriate tone to take.  There are very, very few situations in which the "angrymore" smiley and all caps are required, and this isn't one of them.  -Alex (Tarkus), Admin

EDITThanks, Alex- that's a good point.  jpj, my friend, we are after all just trying to have some fun here.  I apologize for the missing avatar- apparently when I did the searching to build the list, the page you commented in did not load all the way, as I don't recall seeing your avatar, which is clearly in evidence today.  I know I have seen it before, as well (it's quite striking).  I've added it to the original list- since you are so good at spotting this sort of thing, you should take a shot at the whole list.

Again, in any event, sorry

Kind of a quickie post this evening to let you know that one last cut at the beta STR, Wide Radius Road and Rail Curves and Switches, Rural Roads, and FAR and FARR is available here [linkie], just for a short time.  Make sure you read the readme.

...Pretty please?...

Take a look at this latest go-round.  Let us know here what you see that you like, what you see that's broke, and what you see that's missing.  Please post some pics here, too.  We'd love to see what you can do with this stuff.

Later, folks.  It's been a long day.

As per usual, there's always wonderful things happening here in 3RR!

I'm going to need a bit to take my shot at the avatar game, but I must say that I'm definitely looking forward to the 2008 Year in Review, my friend!

Hope all is well, David!

A little off topic reply to Dedgren and Alex, the comment about my Avatar was meant as a joke not as a statement, thats why I put it below a dashed line far below my comment and the only words in caps was avater, I apologize if this comment was taken any other way and thank you Dedgren for your comment and there was no avatar until I saw my name on your list, I added it after I posted the original comment  ()sad()

Back on topic I am actually kind of holding up developing part of my CJ waiting for your single track rail lines to come out, I want to use them in a downtown industrial setting! Thanks!

EDIT: I might just be blind, but I can't seem to find rural roads in my Transportation Menu. I have the Rural Roads folder in my plugins, and it has one file in it (NetworkAddonMod_Rural_Roads_Plugin.dat) - is that correct or am I missing something? Other than that, everything else seems to be working wonderfully!

I noticed the same thing, so I guess your eyes are fine :P

There was a change made recently I noticed, I had these working in my system before, but now they don't anymore. The rural roads were supposed to have their own tab cycle in the road menu, separate from the Farr pieces, so the curves would be separate tab piece menu for the next NAM. However since the country roads icon doesn't appear, they are no longer an option to build. I don't think David did that change though.

dedgren

#6318
Sheesh, J-Dub, you were exactly right.  The Rural Roads will be released as a NAM plugin.  The upcoming NAM release is "Rural Roads Ready"- all you have to do is drop the plugin in the proper folder and you are set.  The problem in the run up to release is that there's about five different pairs of hands working on this, each one in a different part of the world.  We don't coordinate this stuff over the phone, either, folks.  It's really amazing that it all comes together.

I've contributed to the problem by trying to keep my beta stuff a bit cagey.  The NAM will be packed with great new stuff this time around, but it wasn't my place to give any of that away before the release.  So, each time I sent out a new beta, I literally had to build a custom set of files for all of you to isolate the specific content I have some degree of say over.

So, here are the Rural Roads.

I've attached a new plugin file down below in the usual place.  Just replace the previous Rural Roads file with this one, which will actually be the one that is the final release for the NAM, so I guess we can say that the '09 NAM Roll-out started here tonight.  Of course, since the NAM is released when it is released, that roll-out might just be as exciting as watching paint dry.

...but then, maybe not...

G'night!
