Title: Izidor44 maps collection
Post by: Izidor44 on January 13, 2012, 07:31:04 AM
Hi All,

Before beginning the show, I apologize if this topic is not at the right place, as I really don't know where to post it ! I belong to any team around here, and this topic is not a tutorial... ...then I felt embarassed and decided to post here. Admins, please feel free to move the topic at the right place  :-[

The first maps shown here are in 8 bit technology, but, I really feel lucky as Dobdriver generously gave me some precious hints and advices about mapping technique. I then upgraded to 16 bit glory and I'm still practicing and trying to improve my skills at mapping. Thanks for help and kind words, master Dobdriver !

Finally, all those maps are not avalaible on the LEX... ...but on the STEX of Simtropolis. Absolutelly no offensive thoughts from me here : I just don't know HOW to upload map at SC4 Devotion, my bad. Here again, I would be glad to know how to  :-[

Well, end of the speech, here are the maps !

Good day SC4 devotees,

Some more news from the mapping machine

Arica (Chile) rendered and uploaded on the STEX

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FSmallviewofArica.jpg&hash=4188d2a7a672c61b815de344dadf5985e9bd292c)

I discovered recently another helpfull tool to speed up some part of the mapping process, which makes possible some maps I tought impossible to do before. I've tested first this new technique with flat land areas, where sea zones could nicely render :

Brunswick (Georgia) :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FSmallmapofBrunswick.jpg&hash=106809df7f7524f6e89819e12525a21094e8fdf5)

An optimized config.bmp file will be done before any upload.

Sarasota (Florida), as requested by PoV Liberty around here :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FmapofSarasota.jpg&hash=2d0a362aabf2fd725b73807ed0e4e76fad991d56)

Another more "classical" map ready to go too, Macquarie Harbour (Tasmania) :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FSmallmapofMacquarieHarbour.jpg&hash=dab680e6c347f5d3fe7bf92db3f7ce2875150d40)

As usual, more to come, so stay around !

Cheers,

Izi

@ Swordmaster : thanks for viewing ! This SC4 thread is less used by me compared to the ST one, but I always try to keep it up to date.

@ Silur : the city is located in Sakhalin Island.

Hi Dob'

Thanks for the kind words ! I continue experimenting various techniques, using Google sattelites photos (big ones : 5.000 x 5.000 px), Google water body drawings (especially for US territory, where this kind of drawing are accurate and affordable) and also mask editing in PL...

I would like to show that more accuratelly in our private conversation on ST, but website is still offline today...

...this is too sad, I really need something strong... hips !

Ho ho, I have 4 new fresh posts around here in almost 2 days ! Let's open a bottle of Champagne ! Where are those glasses...? ah, there...

So a little tricky time with this preview here : can you say the real location of this one (very easy I think) ?

You need to put the Bronx in there :)

Also, Brooklyn extends a little further east.

And, perhaps this map would be better rotated to make Manhattan align with the grid.

I agree with Lowkee33 about rotating the map about 23 degrees counter clockwise.
This way the port will line up properly with the grid as well as the two rivers on either side of New York island would make making bridges easier.

Hi cmdp123789,

Mapping requires some usefull tools, and it may differ from mapper to mapper... ...In my case, I always have in my pocket :

I have the project, which is still complete rough, to write a webpage around here, detailling the modest technique I have. I hope some experimented mappers to contribute to this project... ...but you will have to be VERY patient with this one.

@rooker1 & Lowkee : rotating the NY map by -23° would be possible but it will require some extra work...
I might add more terrain to north and east and make the Bronx appears  :-[

...so stay tuned, as usual !

Cheers,

Izi

Please do, or perhaps even remove some from the south and west.  A proper map of NYC would be a great addition to the game.

Ideally, a NYC map should go as far north as White Plains/I-287. I personally value that area more highly than the bottom three tiles in your current setup.

Hi rooker1,

Thanks again for your kind words !

Here is the map now :
- rotated to make the Manhattan avenues running from south to north (vertically if I could say)
- "frame" slightly moved in order to add more northern territories (like White Plains) and less land at west and south
- dimension of the map slightly reduced in widht, in order to cut vertically the Manhattan island and make bridges possible

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FMapofNYC.jpg&hash=4c1e5621d018431bdbe962a521b77e57100c5cc8)

Izidor44, you do know you can get 1/3 arc US data from the US Geological website don't you?  1/3 arc data is far superior to 1 arc data and is far more detailed.  Send me a PM if you can't find it. ;)

Robin, all of my US based maps are done with 1/3 arc data.  Only the US though, no 1/3 exists as far as I know for other areas across the planet.  Best you can get for areas outside the US is 1 arc data.

Hi Gentlemen,

I finally succeeded in finding 1/3 arc datas and exploiting it ! Thanks to Blade2k5 for suggesting this standard of high definition.

Let's open my mapping laboratory if you dare... (door noise here, please)

Just to show you the differences I would like to compare the 3 possible definitions I have for this New York city map.

Let me show you what I call "dry maps" : these pictures represents the map before any drawing of sea zones and rivers. All elevations are correct but there's just no water at all, and ocean is completelly flat at 0 meters of altitude (250 meters in Terraformer).

I usually change basis colors with some of my taste for mapping : here, the 15 meters isocline si represented by red pixels. It helps me to draw water zones : I can draw what I want under this elevation, nothing above. When elevation exceeds 15 meters, rivers are too much sunken in the ground, which I dislike and found unrealistic.

Those 3 maps represent the same area and have been imported into Terraformer using the same settings (compressor's settings in particular).

3 Arc second resolution

I was amazed by the smoothness of the 1/3 resolution, but a close up is more relevant :

Have you noticed that lower Mabhattan has no longer elevations above 15 meters ? I suspect high buildings of this area to really alter the real datas. On the countrary, the 1/3 arc is way more realistic, you can even guess the shape of harbour constructions and piers... This new standard (for me) of resolution needs some extra work comparing the usual 1 and 3 arc, but it might worth it !  &hlp

So now, you may have guessed by yourself, I have to create a neat sea layer...

Stay tunned,

Izi

Good morning gentlemen,

This small post to show the final result of the NYC project :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FSmallmapofNYC.jpg&hash=4301c24c0b89f1cfb6e52f9e19912ca384cc0d9b)

...and a little close-up :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FCloseup.jpg&hash=0ffd02e503e365adc8a7537933e5301d84db614f)

This was a pretty long job for me as I did almost 4 separates map in various arc resolutions before finishing this one. So I can proudly affirm to know well the pattern of this portion of earth, I can even draw it by heart :P

The map has been, compared to the previous screenshots of the topic, slighty reduced in width, in order to cut the Manhattan island by two. This way, it is possible to put bridges almost everywhere over Hudson river.

Cheers,

Izi

I finally opened all those tiles for checking if everything was all right :

New York City

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FSmallviewofNYC.jpg&hash=31499a923f8f7a2afb04608c56a846123015b720)

This new map will probably be upload next week... ...so bridge-making fans will have to wait until then  $%Grinno$% !

The 1/3 arc resolution is really impressive as, opening the tiles, I could see the real pattern of roads and infrastructures, highways, etc. I will probably use these DEM files for every american map in the future...

Excellent work on NYC!  And Harrisburg, too - I've always toyed with making a region of that area, but never actually completed one - usually get lost staring at the mountains and lose track of time  ::)

The 1/3 data is awesome, isn't it?  The 1/9 is even crazier, surreal even to get that level of detail in a region.

I downloaded your NYC map yesterday... it is great... and the ingame quality is marvelous... Now, I see that you just uploaded a map to the stex and I was wondering if you coul make a London map for your next upload...? any chance you could make it? (London, England) and if possible can you rotate it so that the Canary Wharf matches the SC4 grid?

Hi all,

Two more maps done and waiting for the rendering stage :

Detroit (Michigan)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FsmallmapDetroit.jpg&hash=8ce76920c3398b1ddf66ff6fe3be74eccc0b0d38)

Aberdeen (Washington)

The first is at 1 arc resolution, whereas the second is at 1/3 arc, those crispy details are real eye candy !

Yeah I knew about those... In fact, I downloaded them. The problem with those is that the scale is way off... that's why I wanted you to have a try at it... I would like the map to be sc4 scaled... and if possible to rotate it so that the Canary Wharf area is aligned with sc4 grid. It would be very nice of you if you could do it,

thanks in advance...

PS (edit): I forgot, I would like the map to cover as much area as possible, key parts are westminster, canary wharf, well the city of course, and if possible the heathrow intl airport area... thanks again buddy...

Hi cmdp123789,

Thanks for your message, I thought it was better first to check with you the existing London maps before doing anything. So now, I put this project in my bag too.

I wonder if better DEM file exist than the standard 3 arc resolution, I will try to find something... ...but usually, apart from USA, the rest of the world is at this definition.

Aberdeen map is rendered :

Good mornin' mappers,

Detroit map is, at last, rendered and uploaded on the STEX this very morning :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FsmallviewDetroit.jpg&hash=aa10e08368665281ddac39dba2893592c3231bad)

As I said before, this map is probably the last US one at 1 arc resolution, simply because I can now use better datas, which are more accurate and detailed, to render US territory.

Cheers,

Keep up the good work! Very talented

Good morning gentlemen,

Thanks for the kind words, it is very motivating  :)

@ c0pr4x : you're right about map size but, you know, I'm like a child in a candy store ! When I generate a rough elevation map, before any work, it is usually very big, like 40 x 60 big tiles.

So, I have to crop this image and select a specific area, and it's always difficult to choose... ...I'm thinking "why not croping a bigger part ?"  :D

However, when I grab high definition datas (1/3 or even 1/9 arc resolution), files are bigger... ...then map is smaller.

Look at Montgomery, West Virginia, which is 6 x 6 big tiles in dimensions :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2Fsmallviewmontgomery.jpg&hash=a719e4cbdb28be4517ee452808f00204e611a646)

Stay tuned, as usual,

Hi all,

This small update to show some last try at the mapping machine :

Happy Valley Goose Bay - Canada (3/4 arc resolution), rendered and uploaded on the STEX:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FsmallviewofHVGB.jpg&hash=5d520b9699ed06f76aad8680a28430c150a0328d)

Santa Cruz - California (1/3 arc resolution)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FsmallmapSantaCruz.jpg&hash=289ccc1a883b16f44036fd929d9d43cd342c4dac)

Meteor Crater - Arizona (1/3 arc resolution)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FsmallmapofMeteor.jpg&hash=032436b1849d80964ae04e1e5b6e64a4e7efb8ec)

I think I'm gently becoming junk about those high definition datas, maps geerated from 3 arc datas just look blurred in comparison with those. Sadly, it is a bit hard to find that standard of definition out of north american continent...

...but never say "never"  ;)

Hi!

I would like to know if you take request? Because if you want some new challenge you could do smaller map, around 3 large x 3 large! For exemple, only the downtown of montreal and not the whole island.

What do you think? :)
Title: Re: Izidor44 maps collection
Post by: Izidor44 on June 28, 2012, 12:31:21 AM
Hi c0pr4x,

Yep, it could be interesting to do some small maps, for very typical small areas probably...

But 3 x 3 or 4 x 4 big tiles maps are very small (12,23 x 12,23 km and 16,38 x 16,38 km respectivelly).

For Montreal, Dobdriver already made a map of the whole area, so it would be easier just to crop his file to the desired zone.

Good morning Izi,   :)

The montana and switzerland maps look great!  And they also have me wondering; where did you get your DEM data for europe if you don't mind sharing?  I've been looking for something better than the SRTM data for europe.

Thanks,

Hi Blunder,

Unfortunatelly, it's hard to find accurate datas for Europe. Most of elevation files are in 3 arc resolution :

SRTM index :
http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/ (http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/)

Alps chains is available in 1 arc resolution, right here :

Digital Elvation datas :
http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/dem3.html (http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/dem3.html)

A pretty little candy here, for Finland :

https://tiedostopalvelu.maanmittauslaitos.fi/tp/kartta?lang=en (https://tiedostopalvelu.maanmittauslaitos.fi/tp/kartta?lang=en)

I wish I could find some better datas for Russia... ...and free of course... &mmm

Thanks for those links!

I've tried viewfinderpanorama before but both tiles i tried there was errors where they had spliced together imagery.  I guess i will give it another go.  Also that finland link is interesting; there is some neat topography there.  Thanks again!

/contemplates the watermask for 10,000 islands, LA.

You, sir, out out of your mind.   :D

I'm looking forward to the render of the Italy map; I bet it'll look great.

Also, the changes to the elevation color scale in terraformer; is that something there is an option for (i haven't seen one) or did you have to fiddle under the hood?  I'd love to be able to split up the 'white' elevation section in terraformer myself.

You can edit basicColors.ini in the base folder of Mapper/Terraformer and enter your own colors.

Aha!  Thank you, sir.
That's very helpful, now i can adjust the color so i can see where the snowline will be without having to load it up in game first.

Hello gentlemen,

Thanks for the kind words Epicblunder  :)  $%Grinno$%

I guess you worry a little about my brain  :D ...then please have a look at this mornin' experience :

Whitewater Bay, Everglades - Florida (1/3 arc resolution) :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl577%2FIzidor44%2FsmallmapofWhitewater_zpsd0afaf8e.jpg&hash=fd9ce2f95691699ffd88032d67c6d5a9b00b7be7)

About color editing in SC4 Terraformer or Mapper, please have a look at the readme file which explains how to modify the default settings. It's not that hard, just have to know that colors must be in HTML code.

Aaron, NYC map is available on the STEX, right here : http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/27550-new-york-city-united-states/ (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/27550-new-york-city-united-states/)

Tadoussac map is also available there :

Indeed, I think that's sometimes half the fun! It's a very unique way to explore new places, or even become more familiar with places you thought you knew by heart.
