Title: Windows 10 experiences with SC4
Post by: Dublin on September 09, 2016, 06:38:37 PM
Curious on how well people are running SC4 on Windows 10, Naturally I assume that most are running in a single core mode although on an older iMac 27 I am running SC4 on Dual cores without a problem in Win 10 Pro 32 Bit. Haven't heard of anyone else being able to (maybe the Mac Architecture). Primarily I run SC4 in Single core on my main Machine with the following specs.Running 64 Bit Windows 10 Pro upgrade on a mid 2011 iMac 27"
Intel Quad-Core i5-2400 @ 3.4 GHz
8 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
2TB 7200 rpm HD
It runs very well, using The Steam Version on full screen mode. So far SC4 works in windows 10, Cogeos Model Tweaker in Win 7 mode, Lot Editor (full screen) in XP SP3 mode, Damn Mgr/SSP tool win 10, iLives Reader XP SP3 mode, SC4 LotinfosGenerator win XP SP3. I haven't installed or tryed Pim-X/X-tool yet, but so far no problems with anything I've tryed.
Hoping to hear if anyone else has had success or problems that can be fixed. It might just be how the Mac handles things but i'm guessing not it is intel after all.

I have played Sim city 4 on Windows 10. I do have the cd so I called EA-games to get a hardware version from Origin to play the game since it is inpossible to install the game because of the Install shield problems that Windows 10 has.
Still you have to run the game with only 1 core. All programms Damn lot Editor ect ect ect will work in Windows 10.
I have installed Windows 10 on my SSD so all games can be loaded pritty fast!
Plugin folders was more then 5 gig took only 2 minutes to load!

First thing to do is : contact EA-games
Good luck!

Anecdotally, everything I've seen tells me you should have no troubles on Windows 10. By and large there are no big code changes like there were between XP and Vista that should cause programs, like 3rd party modding tools, to stop working. Some issues may present themselves as a result of changes to file/folder permissions in Win10. But none are serious/break anything, worst case a workaround will resolve them.

It also seems that the WDDM drivers in Windows 10 are a lot better for users of Intel Integrated graphics, which work with hardware rendering unlike under 7/8.

I've heard a couple people who swear they can use multi-core without CTDs. Maybe you are just lucky or something, because on every system I've used, if I don't disable it, it's hideously unstable. This includes a dual core Mac Mini running XP. But indeed it can't be down to the hardware differences of a mac, there aren't any. It's more likely down to the OS/drivers if things are performing better. Are you running boot camp as a dual-boot system or parallels/VM? Otherwise perhaps it's just certain configurations that work? Either way, the performance benefits are marginal, since SC4 still isn't optimised for multi-threaded use.

Obviously the biggest hurdle is for owners of the physical disk, which won't run on Windows 10 (although you can install it fine). I'd personally give GoG/Amazon my money for a DRM free version before I went begging to Origin and installing their client to get it for free. But not everyone will feel the same way.

mgb204 I'm boot camping a dual system, Parallels seems to lag a bit but is nice to run a windowed OS on the mac side. I've only gotten a stable run of SC4 on dual core with an older Intel Mac 2009 27" but not on a retired 24" although the Boot camp versions were slightly different. Single core is the best bet since SC4 only requires and was designed for it. Win 10 is mainly for my gaming everything else El Captain, PS, CAD, Video editing ect.
