For over 3 years now (where has the time gone?) requests for Texture IID ranges have been made in a thread at Simtropolis.  For reasons of convenience, I've decided to open up a similar thread here as well.  This will not replace the thread at Simtropolis, but will merely be an additional and complementary way to request Texture IID ranges.  I will service range requests from both websites.

By request, I have copied the first post of the original thread at Simtropolis (where the meaning of each digit of the texture IID is explained) in the following new thread.

If you want to make SC4Tool automatically allocate IIDs from your personal range, do the following:

Create a txt file and save it as Range.txt and put it into the System folder of SC4Tools.  Say your range is 0xB2C80000 to 0xB2CFFFFF, it would need to be the following:

0xb2c80000,0xb2cfffff

After that, every time you open the Texture Creator part of SC4Tools, it will only allocate IIDs from your range. I would advise everyone to keep a list of which IIDs you have used, as it will be very useful after a while.

Not planning on making any textures, but am playing round with the tool so thought I may as well get a range to prevent any accidents. ()stsfd()

Hi Diggis!

You can certainly have a range

F3500000 to F357FFFF is all yours!

If you want to make SC4Tool automatically allocate IIDs from your personal range, do the following:

In your case, it would need to be the following:

0xf3500000,0xf357ffff

BTW Diggis, try to avoid using 0-3 in the fifth digit position unless you are making a set of wealth dependent textures.

this was a pre-emptive decision.  If I get to the point I would like to make some, which is possible, I will be back for more answers.  Can I post any questions here?

to give textures for free? or is it just a range so i can (if i can) make my own pretty patterns to make my cities look nice. you are generous, so i like a range or free textures please (whatever you call it, yet i am new to texture making so i like to know how to do it and what program i need)

do i need a separate range for networking textures?

because of the two post rule i will reply here. Diggis, thank you. now for the range. they say it is vital to avoid conflict. you're right.

You need to download the SC4tool.  There is a thread here with links to it.  Then you request a range, and enter is as per the instructions above.

You need a range for yourself so that your textures don't clash with other peoples.

Thanks for bringing the index request over here as well!  I'd like to request a range as well, please.  I'm planning on producing some stuff that's not related to transit networks (at least, directly). ;)

Madeira, transit network textures are actually assigned through a different method by the NAM Team, depending on the network type and other factors (they always begin with "5").  The Instance ID ranges are in a bit of flux right now, so when you have some network textures ready, just let me know and we'll find some room for you. ;)

In hopes of getting a range sooner, im asking here too(i sent a PM over at ST yesterday i think(or the day before that)), and im iching to get my textures into the game now :P

Also i thought it might not hurt to request publicly eh :) Il need for atleast 10 textures, mightaswell take some extras just in case.

Xiziz, your range is F3800000 to F387FFFF   

With regard to how long the list of ranges is, that's a tricky one.

In theory, the total number of IIDs available is from 0x00000000 to 0xFFFFFFFF.  (That's 4,294,967,295 in decimal.  Quite a lot, I think you'll agree.)  However, a huge number of these are not available for various reasons.  We avoid allocating IIDs starting with a 2, for example, because these tend to be the IIDs used by Maxis.  We also avoid those starting with a 4, because that's the range that the FSHman program automatically defaults to, and 5 because of a request some time ago to avoid potential clashes with transport textures.

That still leaves a lot left.  In the early days, the ranges allocated were quite large - way too large in fact.  I now allocate ranges that have 524,287 IIDs in them, which should be more than enough for the average user. 

Should we ever get to the stage where we seem to be running out of IIDs to allocate, we can always go back to some of the huge ranges that were allocated in the early days.  Lookng through the list, some of these users have not been heard of in years, so there would be little danger of IID conflicts if these IIDs were reallocated.

I used to publish the Index at Simtropolis, but I made the decision to stop doing this for a variety of reasons.

The main reasons were that the index is in fact a quite complicated spreadsheet, and transforming it into something that is simple to read is a real pain.  Also, a couple of times people just looked at the index, and started using IIDs from apparent gaps in the ranges, which caused one or two problems.

The simplist way that I can help is if you are looking for a texture and you have the IID, just put a post in this thread and I'll try to identify it for you (or anybody else).

I have absolutely no idea.  Needless to say, we haven't allocated any ranges starting at 0x00000000.  What Lot is it used on?  If you can let me know I'll have a look, but with such a 'daft' IID, no promises!

It might be possible that someone used this as a trick to point the game to an invalid texture in order to achieve a transparent base texture. Of course, there are better methods than that, such as deleting the LotConfig property lines alltogether, followed by a ReIndex of the LotConfig.

EDIT: Apparently, you give out consecutive ID ranges in the threads at ST and here. While waiting I continued creating and I am presently using the next, apparently free range: 0xF4180000 - 0xF41FFFFF
Hopefully it's really free so you can assign it to me  ;)

Geoff has had a couple of days off this week and should be back this afternoon or evening hopefully (depending on how much he was worn out yesterday).  I'm sure you can wait a day.  I wouldn't recommend guessing as using an already assigned range isn't a good idea.

hello geoffhaw,  Do you have a range reserved for for private use, i.e., for those who may want to experiment a little with creating textures for their own use? I'm not sure that I am serious enough to warrant tying up a whole range officially, but I don't want to get into any conflicts with textures that I have downloaded from others.

If there is no "private use" range, could I get a range?

Heblem, please don't take those ranges as although it may seem as though those are the next to be allocated they may not be. You must wait for geoffhaw to allocate you IIDs.

Quite right. I chose FF5Fxxxx a veeeeeery long time ago for my personal modding purposes (not specifically textures, but prop families etc.), and there are a few other occasions where this happened before those indices were set up.

Apart from anything else your numbering is incorrect as the the range after 0xF49A0### is NOT 0xF50A0###
If you use these you may well end up with conflicts.

Thank you for your offer, Gwail, but it is not necessary. Heblem cannot possibly need that number of texture IIDs before geoffhaw sees his post. LBT have a range already and he has Victor Gonzales' range so that should be more than enough.

We got 1,100 textures, so multiplying it to 5 (for every zoom) would be 5,500... so  :-\  maybe I just simply don't know how to do it, if so then all the texture packs i have done (including the recent one texture pack 2) are incorrect... but for to be sincere those textures has been working on my lots and I haven't seen any problems with it, even the incorrect textures from LBT Texture Pack 1...

The new texture pack im doing I need to get it ready for a new lots for the posada as Gwail mentioned, so I'm like rushing myself to get it done by today or at least for tomorrow, I have been working on these textures during the last 15 hours continues, so im not planning in give a step back due I nearly get it finished &mmm Thanks Tage for your info that had would be so useful for me since long time ago, so I think with Victor range would be enough, now I understand... but the problem is to change every texture value I did and do it over again... &cry2

Edit: here are all my available ranges 0xF2700000 - 0xF27FFFFF, 0xF4600000 - 0xF46FFFFF and Victors 0xF4900000 - 0xF49FFFFF

The 0xF2700000, are at the LBT Texture Pack 1 and the small set of textures from the Prop Pack 1, also some textures are from Mock Town project files and Canatlan Files

The 0xF4600000, are at the LBT Texture Pack 2, which are the parking lot set textures.

As for Victor's (0xF4900000), supposed to be for the LBT Texture Pack 3, which the textures are by him and some by mine I did...

6 digit and 7 digit are for accommodations number (getting a range from 1 to 99 textures per family) so actually I can do 16 families of textures (giving into a total of 1584 textures, not enough for 5,500) so if I need 5,500 , I thought I would use like 3-4 ranges of textures...

the 8 digit is zoom level, so I set it by default 0

Again that was I though and thats how my textures are designed (starting from the Canatlan files to texture pack 3)

Use "0" in this place only if you also make wealth dependent textures with numbers 1, 2 and 3.

Digits 6 and 7 can both take 16 values (from 0 to F), giving 256 values to choose from (ranging from 0x00 to 0xFF).
And 16 families would in that case give 4,096 unique numbers, quite enough for your 1,100 textures,
still even without taking into account the 12-fold amount of numbers you would get by using 4...F instead of 0 in the 5th digit.

Hey there, I have a quick question if it is ok to ask here  :)

I recieved an allocation and have been using it to produce a set of downhill/cross country ski trails.  Its been working great!

However, when I test the lots in game, each lot (No matter what texture is on there, base or overlay) always displays the first texture

(Which happens to be an overlay, which also uses the first 5 IID's so
0xF4700000
0xF4700001
0xF4700002
0xF4700003
0xF4700004)

on every lot for every tile.  If you need an example i'd be glad to provide one.  I hope i've explained it enough  :P

Any tips/suggestions?

Hey Swat what I do is when making my textures and so far it works based off Barbys advice is to due

F4704000 (Stater texture from I take is your ID)
F4704100
F4704200

and so on to nine then I repeated the processe with

F4704A00
F4704B00

and again so on to F... The rest SC4Tool will take care of... From what I understood from Barby is that the 4 has to be there as its something to due with wealth or something, all I understand its supposed to be 4... Does my gibberish make any sense lol... It's not the "4" itself that has something to do with the wealth, but the fifth digit of the ID (which is "4" in your example). In essence, if you don't want to make wealth-dependent textures, don't use 1, 2 or 3, but start with 4.

Alright, so when I click "Next Free ID" I should enter a digit in for the wealth type? 

Here is my current DAT containing several textures.. I know the IID's are incorrect, but i'm still not sure what to do since sc4tool arranged the textures for me.  If my hunch is correct then i just have to use F4704000 instead of F4700000 and so on like pat said?

If you set up your ID range properly, SC4Tool should suggest the next free ID automatically once you click the button. You just have to check the 5th ID if it doesn't suggest a texture ID that would be wealth-dependent. If that's the case, simply click the button again, until another value than 1, 2 or 3 appears. Of course, you can enter the IDs manually as well, but be careful when doing that. Hint: You also have to enter the leading "0x...", otherwise, it doesn't work properly.

Pat, the last digit - digit 8 - is the zoom level for each of the different zooms in the game. You don't need to worry about anything other than the 5th digit - 0x12345678 when you are making textures in SC4Tool.
To reiterate:
0x1234 - your personal identification
5 - the important one. Make sure it isn't 0-3 UNLESS you are making a set of wealth dependent textures and most people don't.
67 to do with dilapidation but still not sure about these
8 the zoom marker. Textures will always work in groups of 5 - 5 zoom levels - and so SC4Tool will deal with this automatically. You do not need to worry about this.

Just make sure your personal identification is correct and that digit 5 is not set to 0 to 3.

Hello there this is acemusik ( alias - simfanatik ) i did already made overlays textures and uploaded them to Simtropolis . i did uses the idds that the sc4 tool was allowing me ( not all of them ) still got some left , hope i didnt do anything wrong , i am not planning to do a lot of them , but i just wanna make sure that everything is alright so the personal idds range that the sc4 tool program allowed me is

           personal IDD range       0xfc782dao - 0xfc783188 , and i would like to have some more , very personal one

those overlays textures were use for road streets and one way roads ( lots ) transit enable , and i would like to have some more and upgrade , so if this possible can you please check if this is ok ,and allow me new ones, and show me the way to install those in the sc4 tool , i dont want to interfer or conflict whit no one, and play it fair,
i did not know i had to ask for numbers, so please if you could help me this would be much appreciated

I take it you're having trouble with the range.txt file?  Creating a text file with just (in your case) 0xf5900000,0xf597ffff in it should work.  (Upper or lower case.)  If it doesn't, maybe it really is a Vista thing?  Dunno.  I have heard reports along these lines though...  Anybody else having similar problems?

Been working fine for me under x64 Vista and x64 Win7 , however , I had to manually create the Settings.dat values under both OS'es...and the same for Reader.

I would like to request a Texture Range.

With all the work I've been doing in my MD recently, it finally dawned on me that I could run into trouble in the future.  :-[  I'll just have to replace the 8 textures that I've made so far to fit whatever you assign me.  Better late than never I suppose!

Quick question on this as well: Do base and overlay textures use the same series of ID numbers?

I would like to add my request for a texture range assignment, please. 

I am just getting started learning the custom content part of the game, so if I ask stupid questions, please forgive me.  This range you assign me, how many textures will it allow me to create?  And, it is just for textures, correct?  I saw as I was entering this thread there is another similar thread for props.  I am pretty sure I will be creating props at some point in time, so do I need to request a range, apart from the one for textures, also?

To answer your questions:

How many textures - lots!  The range above actually contains 524,287 individual IIDs, but not all of them are usuable.  Please take note of the notes at the beginning of this thread for guidance on how to use (or avoid) IIDs which have Lot wealth properties.  I've never actually worked it out, but the range you have has capacity for many hundreds of texture IIDs, if not more.  As a handy hint, keep a record of which IIDs you have used and for what purpose - it will come in useful at some point I'm sure!

The other thread you saw for Props is actually for Prop Families - not quite the same thing.  There is no actual index for Prop IIDs, as the scope for inadvertant IID conflicts is so much less.  (This is because there are no wealth characteristics to worry about, and Props use different Group IDs as well.  Textures all have the same Group ID.)  Prop Families are used when you want to have different alternative props appear on your lots.  For example, if you design, say, a whole load of different bus shelters you can use the Prop Family IID from your range to group them together.  After that, you plop the prop family into your lot, rather than an individual bus shelter.  The game will see the family IID and use one of the props in that family at random.  Very useful to get variety!  (One effect of this is that whenever the game is reloaded, it chooses the prop at random again, so it may be a different one next time you play!)

As noted by Andreas, the Texture range is for base and overlay textures only not for textures used on BATs. There is no index for those.

mightygoose - the index is not published anywhere or people could take their own allocations without making a note of it. That could lead to another mess ;D

OK, thanks to BarbyW and Andreas for holding the fort for me whilst I was away!

Seems like a few questions have arisen, so to summarise...

This texture index is only for the textures that appear as base and overlay textures in LE.  It is not for any transit textures or any textures to be used in any individual BATs.  BarbyW got it right about why we don't publish the list - there have been one or two examples where people have chosen their own ranges and this has really screwed things up.  If for any reason somebody does want a particular set of numbers I will do my best to accommodate them, but no promises.

Anyway, here are your ranges:

@ tamorr, your range is 0xF6480000 to 0xF64FFFFF

Sorry for the slowness in my reply - RLS has had me busy for the last few days...

The range you quoted is allocated to the SimMars team.  I haven't got anything allocated to you under the Husinho name.  Also, all ranges would end in 0xXXXXFFFF, so I'm a little confused where this range came from. 

Anyway, you are welcome to have the next range which is 0xF6E40000 to 0xF6E7FFFF

Is there a published listing of who has what texture ranges? Been playing around with PIMX and am trying to load only the texture packs I was using in Maxis Lot Editor (was working with a full plugins folder).

Specifically:
Base: 0x1da44ab0 and 0x1da444c5
Overlay: 0x1da447b0

Didn't see them with only Maxis textures installed and have been plugging in BSC Mega Texture packs. After pack 3 and no joy decided to ask.

@ zzsteven, we used to publish the index way back when, but we found that people were then spotting the gaps, then assuming they were free and allocating ranges to themselves.  Precisely what we are trying to avoid! 

If anybody is trying to find out where/who a particular texture has come from, by all means post the IID in this thread and I will try to help.  I think I know most of what's going on, and the Peg ones you mentioned would have been an easy win!

The range you quoted is allocated to the SimMars team.  I haven't got anything allocated to you under the Husinho name.  Also, all ranges would end in 0xXXXXFFFF, so I'm a little confused where this range came from.

It seems the range of textures IID allocated to the SimMars team is also being used as a default by the SC4Tool program, and everyone who starts creating textures with SC4Tool automatically gets a "personnal range" of 0xFC782DA0 - 0xFC783188. When reading this thread I realized what I thought was my 'personnal range' is indeed a very popular one  $%Grinno$%, being accidentally used by several people starting to create textures ...  &ops

In order to avoid conflict with somebodyelse's textures, I would be glad if you could assign a range for me.

My original motivation to come to this thread was to ask if anyone knows where can I find the following two base textures 0xA5270000 and 0xA5280000. I have them in two of my lots and, for some unknown reason, it seems these textures were deleted from my plugins and I cannot find them anymore.

Yes, the SC4Tool default setting has caused one or two problems, but whatever the setting might have been we would have had the same problem.

The two textures you mention are in BSC Textures Vol03 http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1806 (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1806).  They were originally in jeronij's JRJ Sidewalks Mod.

If you want to make SC4Tool automatically allocate IIDs from your personal range, do the following:

Create a txt file and save it as Range.txt and put it into the System folder of SC4Tools.  With your range it would need to be the following:

0xf7380000,0xf73bffff

After that, every time you open the Texture Creator part of SC4Tools, it will only allocate IIDs from your range. I would advise everyone to keep a list of which IIDs you have used, as it will be very useful after a while.

@ NecoraNecora, yes, SC4Tool does give out a default range which does cause the occasional problem.  I've allocated you a range which is 0xF7480000 to 0xF74BFFFF. 

To get SC4Tool to recognise your unique range, just create a textfile called Range.txt and put it in the root folder of SC4Tool.  In your case the text would be

0xf7480000,0xf74bffff

There is a master list of course, and this isn't the first time I've been asked this question.  However, we are reluctant to publish it because the last time we did (a long time ago) we found that people started allocating ranges to themselves.  Took a while to sort it out...

I'm happy to tell anyone whose range an IID belongs to though. 

As a matter of interest we've allocated 283 ranges so far!  Not bad!

Can't really help you there, but this is why.

There is no range for props because we've never really had need for one.  When you import a new model into the game a TGI number is generated for you.  Once you have one, you can re-number the Instance number to whatever you want.  However, the hexadecimal numbering system only goes up to F, so if you were thinking of using IGC you will be stuck.  Maybe 16C? 

There is the prop family index which is maintained by BarbyW, but this is for when you want to have alternate props appearing on lots in the same place whenever the lot is plopped, or when the game reloads.

2) The first texture I have now made used F78C0000-F8C0004. Presumably the next texture is ok to start at F78C0005?  Is that correct? In other words what is the incriment in number from the first texture to the next? In this example it would be 5.

It's a sixteen base system. 0123456789ABCDEF. Your first 9 textures might look something like this ...

F78C0000 thru F78C0004
F78C0005 thru F78C0009
F78C000a thru F78C000E.

Skip F and start the next sequence with

F78c0010
F78c0015
F78c001a

F78c0020
F78c0025
F78c002a

Remember that the 5th digit is a wealth determiner. F78C0000 is a low wealth texture because that 5th digit is a zero. It will only show up in low wealth areas. So you are probably best to start your sequence with an alpha as the 5th digit. e.g. F78CA000. I think you can use the numbers 5 thru 9 for the 5th digit too but I've not done it so I don't know for sure. By the time you get to F78CA09A you are at 30 base or overlay textures. By the time you get to F78CAFFF you are in the 750 to 800 texture range. You've not even used F78CB, F78CC, F78CD, or F78CE ranges. Basically, you have a ton of numbers to use up.

Use your microsoft calculator to convert hex to decimal when you get stuck or are not certain about what number comes next.

It's actually F78C1000 that would be a low wealth texture.  0 would be zero-wealth, not to be confused with "no wealth".

Indeed, not only that but using wealth based textures will use up that entire area (I don't want to use the word "range").  Wealth textures are interesting though.

A $ texture is made, say 12341###-12341### (# means anything).  Alone, this texture works fine for all lots.  Now make the higher wealths 12342### and 12343###.  What happens is that these textures are sort of "familied".  Even if you put the $$$ texture on a $ lot, you will see the $ texture in-game.  They can be looked at as one texture.  It's useful because if you put this texture on a $$$ lot, and the lot distresses to $$, then the $$ texture will be displayed.

However, at that point you can no longer use the 1234#### "area" for anything else.  You would have to change on of the first 4 digits.  Since the only digit we can change in our range is the fourth one, we are pretty limited if we choose to make wealthed textures. Like Jim says though, there are a lot of textures needed to fill a range.

SimCity has also used the 6th digit in it's textures.  If the texture is wealthed, then the 6th digit being a 1 means that this is the texture that will display when the lot is abandoned.

I think you can put a wealthed texture on a lot with no wealth (not zero wealth, no wealth property at all) and it's textures will inherit the wealth of the surrounding area.

Not to be rude or anything but sidewalks don't require a texture range as there're only 4 possibilities, each with its own prescribed ID. Unless you meant making LE textures to match sidewalks, in which case you would need an IID range indeed.

I'd assume, the answer is no. Transit textures have a different Group-ID (0x1ABE787D) than base and overlay textures. One has to be very careful in using IDs from this range because not only transit textures are in there, but also all the FSH textures by Maxis for BATs, Automata, etc. Undesired side-effects like textures on buildings are likely. A similar example is the reason why Project 0E became Project 57.

Moreover, transit IDs are usually coordinated by the NAM. The NAM takes up the entire range 0x5####### as well as parts of 0x3#######, as far as I know. The meaning of these IDs is more than just referencing textures, though, which makes it important to organize them in a structured way.

Anyway, it really depends on what you are planning to do. If your plan is to make a texture replacement mod, the IDs are predetermined which is fine. If you wish to create new transit items, the right thing to do would be to accost the NAM team with it.

As far as I know, the BSC texture index is for Lot base and overlay textures only, that is, FSH files with Group-ID 0x0986135E. I think the BAT automatically produces FSH and S3D files with your own unique Group-ID which works fine and does not require any modification - base/overlay textures however need the aforementioned GID to work. SC4PIMX also assigns you a unique GID for your BATs, I think.

As the number of possible Instance-IDs for base/overlay textures is limited, that's why there is the texture index in order to avoid conflicts.

While re-assigning texture IIDs I noticed something troubling: I had both used 0xFC7xxxx and 0xF7Cxxxx which was confusing me. But alright, must have messed up somewhere along the line. No biggie, I'll just look up my IID range.

With regard to any textures you may have released using the "default" range...  dunno really!  These may clash with any textures that others may have also released using the same range, but it's impossible to say.  Even if they do clash, it's a 50/50 chance whether yours will take preference - the game will take the last set of IIDs it loaded according to the folder structure of the user.  In theory, to avoid any problems you could re-release any lots etc. with your dedicated range, but it's up to you.  Of course, even if you did, anybody who has already downloaded them would have a potential problem until they update them.

I don't know if anyone has run into this before. I asked for and received a texture range quite some time ago. I was working to create a new set of farming related textures. The very first texture in my set started with XXX00000 where XXX are the leading hex digits for my assigned range. I ended up with 220+ textures many of which have multiple 'versions' created using MultiFSH. I used SC4PIM Lot Editor to put together some test lots using my textures. Everything looked good in PIM but when I emptied my plugins folder of everything except my texture DAT file and my test lots I ran into something strange in-game. All tiles of my test lots showed up as using the first texture in my set. I quit my game and took a look at my test lots with ILIVE Reader and saw that every tile in my set of lots had a unique IID for the base textures just as I had thought I set up with the PIM-LE.

I did some experimentation and found out that my lots showed up looking OK in-game if I deleted the 5 FSH files for my first texture. I used SC4Tool to put back a new texture starting with XXX00000 and was back to all of my lots showing only that texture for all tiles. I don't remember seeing anything about not using a texture IID ending in 00000 but I may have missed someone's post to that effect. I took a quick look at several of the commonly used texture DAT files and didn't see where anyone else had a texture ending in 00000.

I know that the first 4 digits of the IID specify the texture family while the 5th digit specifies the wealth level. I didn't think I would have any problems using wealth level 0 for my textures since they are meant to solely be used for Industrial Ag lots where a wealth level is meaningless (as far as I know). And I know that the 8th digit specifies the zoom level where the given FSH gets used. I didn't see any problem with starting my set of textures with one that ends in 00000 but obviously I was wrong.

I'm wondering if this is a known anomaly or something I found through just dumb luck.

I hoping geoffhaw is OK and real life is just proving difficult to get away from, as most of you know I took over the prop family index a few months ago when we had a similiar situation there.

I don't particular want to take over the texture index as well, but if geoffhaw remains absent then I will consider it.

In the meantime geoffhaw if you are out there can you please pop in and let me know what you want to do re the Index and that you are OK.

0xFC000000 to 0xFCFFFFFF is allocated to the SimMars team.

We got the range in anticipation of making textures that I never made, and so I never actually recorded my range and which IIDS I had used from it. I've now recorded it, and also updated it in SC4Tool.

Hi Mary,

First of all, the new range for CorinaMarie is 0xF8B40000 to 0xF8B7FFFF

Now, to your range!  Your original range was 0xFA000000 to 0xFAFFFFFF.  This was one of the first ranges to be allocated, and it is HUGE!  That range has 16,777,216 IIDs in it. The ranges we allocate now 'only' have 262,144.  If you have used up to 0xFA700000, that is 7,340,032 IIDs.  You must have loads of gaps! 

Can we change your range to be 0xFA000000 to 0xFA7FFFFF ?  This is 1,048,575 IIDs, still 4 times bigger than the present new ranges.  This will free up 32 ranges for new users. 

Please let me know if you are happy with this.

I wrote down all my ID's and I have a limited amount of knowledge as to how to use them....However I have used

0xFA000000 - 0xFA700000 (being 70)

1-70 and then I have used a few letters like 1a-f

but not many

example :
0xFA1a0000

ect

im trying to get some better understanding of how to use them I have been told that

Example
0xFA00(0)000
is reserved by the game as wealth indicator (0-3) and I know the last is the zoom indicator.

but yes the above range is fine.

is there a thread that explains how to use these so that I can use them more efficiently?

Geoff. I have been helping Mary Miller with the issue of IDs over here (http://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/70733-mary-millers-creations/?page=4#comment-1630144) on ST.

For the time being, you can re-use ranges 0xFA9xxxx onwards safely, none of these were ever in use.

Despite making only 85 textures though, all the ID's have been incremented from the 3rd digit. I.e. FA00xxxx - FA0Fxxxx were all used, but only for one texture ending in 0004. It's pretty much the same for FA1xxxxx - FA8xxxxx. There might be two or three exceptions to this rule.

Mary has confirmed to me that she is unlikely to need more than a few thousand IDs. As such, we could free up all textures from say 0xFA008000 onwards, provided we can allow an exception for the 16 ID's per group mentioned above. If such an arrangement is acceptable, I'll compile a complete list of exceptions along with an at-a-glance view of every ID in use currently. As I'm sure you can imagine, at this stage changing the IDs of textures that have been in the wild for some time, is not really a workable solution.

Hi to Mary and mgb204.  I think the easiest thing to do here is to pretend I haven't noticed and leave things as they were!  So, in other words please keep the original range allocated. 

The number of ranges being requested these days is slowing down, so we still have quite a few to go.

Thanks, got it, I can convert manually between dec and hex, but is the 'Next Free IID' button still working in SC4 Tool?  I put lowercase hex in Range.txt in SC4 Tool System folder, but getting error.  Tried it with a range given on the first page of this thread and works ok.   

EDIT:

Got it working now for my range.  SC4 Tool seems to have some unknown requirement for where to start from so I tried numbers in the middle of my range and it worked, made about 100 new textures so far.   :bnn:

It appears our index keeper has been offline since June 2017.  I am unaware of the current whereabouts of the spreadsheet, but I have been able to determine the pattern that was being used, and can at least temporarily issue ranges accordingly.  Note, however, that I will not be taking over the responsibility of maintaining the index, beyond clearing this current backlog.

If we follow the pattern, 0xF8F00000 to 0xF8F3FFFF should be the next range.  I don't have access to the spreadsheet (or know its whereabouts), so I can't verify.

I am still just a fill-in here as well, and my RL schedule has been in flux of late, so confirmation on ranges may take a few days--apologies for any inconvenience.

At present, it would also appear we are approaching 0xFFFFFFFF, though it'll take 451 range assignments for us to hit it (3 more in the F8 block, then F9, FA, FB, FC, FD, FE, and FF each have 64).  With the slow pace of activity, I don't anticipate we'll have another 451 range assignments anytime soon, but lacking the spreadsheet would become a big issue should we ever reach that point.

Unfortunately, this is one of those situations where I had to rely on guesswork, since none of us actually have the spreadsheet for the full index, and geoffhaw was out of commission for some time--and sadly, passed away back in November. 

It seemed odd to me at the time that Akallan's range was only half of what had been normally assigned, especially given how prolific he was, and I had not anticipated that Geoff would have broken his usual pattern, and jumped up from 0xF88 to 0xF8D to give both you and ezequiel558 ranges that were only a quarter of a standard block 4 years ago. 

This does, unfortunately, mean that there is a conflict here in the index.

I've checked over Akallan's main release, the Swiss Network Textures (SNT) (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/32612-snt/), which is an extremely exhaustive texture mod, and it does appear 0xF8DE#### and 0xF8DF#### are, in fact, in use there, as are IIDs from pretty much each segment of the two full blocks (0xF8DC-0xF8DF and 0xF8E4-0xF8E7) I had allotted him.

I want to offer my profuse apologies for my error here, and thank you for catching it.  In compensation, based on the (limited) information I have, it does appear the 0xF90C-0xF90F block (IIDs 0xF90C0000 through 0xF90FFFFF) would be available.  If you do indeed still only want the quarter block (which there had been some discussion about making the standard block size), then I can allot you just 0xF90C.

It does not appear that ezequiel558 has been active or released anything since making that request--I will, however, make the attempt at contact, and allot a new range, following your new one.

This whole situation ultimately underscores the need to re-assemble the spreadsheet before assigning any further ranges.  We are quite literally having to blindly follow forth from the last consistent pattern, and cannot see these sorts of unusual jumps that may also exist elsewhere.  The effort of re-assembly is not going to be an easy one, either, since we are talking about a rather intensive archaeological dig through 14 years of posts, across two sites.

I would still prefer not to be the one responsible for the index going forward--there has been some interest from others, and I hope to be able to pass it along soon, aiding with the transition (and spreadsheet re-assembly) as best I can.

Check out this handy tool for Bulk File Renaming (https://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php), I use it all the time and it makes things like this easy. Since it should be just a matter of a replace operation changing the previous texture family ID (first 4 digits), to the newly assigned one.

It is indeed not the best time to be requesting a range, because as the recent incident showed, we're not in shape to be able to assign IID ranges with absolute certainty.  The lack of reply is because I wasn't sure how to respond to your request.

Theoretically, after nathkel and ezequiel558's new ranges (F90C0000 - F90FFFFF for the former, F9100000 - F913FFFF for the later), the next range should be F9140000-F917FFFF, but without the spreadsheet or a re-assembly of it, I'd only consider it provisional at the moment. 

I have no idea as to just when the re-assembly of the spreadsheet will happen.  Between life outside SC4, and my duties to the site (which still needs to move) and the NAM Team (currently in the midst of an never-ending development cycle for NAM 37), I'm probably not the guy to do it, unfortunately.

The range you were recently given allows for 36,864 unique texture IDs, have you really made that many textures? If not, perhaps we could help you to better understand how to make use of the full set of IDs? I've attached an Excel Spreadsheet, that lists your F918 Families 9,216 unique IDs. You were assigned 4 families (that's the first four digits of a texture ID), this sheet only covers the first. It ignores all IDs with the 5th digit of 0, 1, 2 or 3, since the use of them will trigger undesirable wealth families for your textures.

Didn't know it allows me so many ! I have done two big packs (around 700 each), and before recording the second one I was just wondering to be sure it will not be truncate or jumping from one range to another. I'm beginning custom stuff and as every beginner I don't know a lot. Sorry for asking another one, obviously it will go well with the first one only. And probably for my whole lifetime ! :-)

Hi there!

So I ran into an issue while I was checking Fordoniak's creations. (it's about the polska restoration) He managed to reuse some of his texture IIDs in different projects, so now those are conflicting. Also some of his textures IIDs are rather confusing. Can someone ( @catty-cb or @mgb204) help me figure it out if Fordoniak/adrian10/adik151 had any official texture IID range.
Because he used textures IIDs starting with 0xFC000000-0xFC000004 and 0xFC100000-0xFC100004 and later texture IIDs withing this range (properly): 0xFC782DA0-0xFC782DFE

Now taking a deeper look onto his used texture IIDs I found two gaps in the older texture file, so I found space for the two conflicting texture, but I don't know what's going on with the first two above.

The more promising thing, that he used properly the texture IIDs within this range, but there are two gaps, and two ID conflicts which technically could cover each other:
0xFC782DA0-0xFC782DFE

The first gap:
0xFC782DC0-0xFC782DC4
The second gap:
0xFC782DD5-0xFC782DD9

And the conflicts:
0xFC782DE0-0xFC782DE4
0xFC782DE5-0xFC782DE9

So it would be awesome if we could check whether these IIDs are free or were asigned to Fordoniak etc... Then I could make the necessary fixes (PIM-X is my best friend)
I checked Fordoniak's other creations, he doesn't used custom textures for other projects.

It's best to wait to have this confirmed, while unlikely, I can't categorically state that this range is available, in such circumstances you'd have to re-ID any textures later if you went ahead unofficially.

Not sure what the hold up is here, but for now if you can make do with them, I'll give you some unused IDs from my range to tide you over, I've more than I could ever possibly need anyhow. Just let me know if this works for you.

I've located the spreadsheet and have updated it to include some of the ones from last year that had not been included.  It does indeed appear that F9200000-F923FFFF can be your range, BartonThinks.  It also appears we'll be able to continue this block pattern until we reach the end of "F9", as "FA" in its entirety is already assigned.

Also, to Tibi's question from earlier: it looks like that last range used by Fordoniak/adrian10/adik151 is a conflict with a seemingly random range that was in use by SimMars: FC782DA0-FC783188.  The other two ranges in "FC" are not listed in the spreadsheet, nor are any ranges assigned to Fordoniak/adrian10/adik151.

And thingfishs, if you're around, it appears you were assigned a range back in November 2009: F6180000-F61FFFFF.

I have thought about automata replacement since i started to play the game and recently made attempts at grasping that operation, even if there seem to be no tutorials anywhere on what i want to do.
I have a couple models already that seem to work fine when replacing them in mikeseith's replacemnt mod in reader, but i have yet to figure out how to make them replace specific maxis cars like i want.

I want to make these public eventually and dont want to realise at that point that i did things ass backward and have to redo a hundred files, so i am here making humble request for texture ID range for koumus.

If you're planning on making automata, then you would not need a range from the BSC Texture Index. 

The BSC Texture Index is intended for Lot textures (Group ID 0x0986135E), whereas automata generally use the same Group ID (0x1ABE787D) as transit network items.  As long as you're not using Instance IDs in the 0x50000000-0x5FFFFFFF range (which the NAM makes use of with Group ID 0x1ABE787D--we have that same range reserved in GID 0x0986135E within the BSC Texture Index, too, for the purposes of creating Lot textures for NAM items), you should generally be safe. 

There's no real index or control over the IID space for GID 0x1ABE787D outside of that.  I've not done any automata modding personally, but your best bet is to use a randomized IID--unless you're directly replacing Maxis models/textures, in which case using those IIDs would be necessary to override the originals.

vester is probably the most experienced automata modder around, and he has a couple of threads here that might help you--his tutorial thread on automata modding is here (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=22.msg102#msg102), and he started a help/questions thread for automata modding here (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=206.0).  He still lurks around on occasion, and there are likely some others with automata experience who might be able to help you over there, too.

If you're planning on making automata, then you would not need a range from the BSC Texture Index. 

The BSC Texture Index is intended for Lot textures (Group ID 0x0986135E), whereas automata generally use the same Group ID (0x1ABE787D) as transit network items.  As long as you're not using Instance IDs in the 0x50000000-0x5FFFFFFF range (which the NAM makes use of with Group ID 0x1ABE787D--we have that same range reserved in GID 0x0986135E within the BSC Texture Index, too, for the purposes of creating Lot textures for NAM items), you should generally be safe. 

There's no real index or control over the IID space for GID 0x1ABE787D outside of that.  I've not done any automata modding personally, but your best bet is to use a randomized IID--unless you're directly replacing Maxis models/textures, in which case using those IIDs would be necessary to override the originals.

vester is probably the most experienced automata modder around, and he has a couple of threads here that might help you--his tutorial thread on automata modding is here (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=22.msg102#msg102), and he started a help/questions thread for automata modding here (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=206.0).  He still lurks around on occasion, and there are likely some others with automata experience who might be able to help you over there, too.

I will make note to stay clear of the 5-5F range. Another project i have in mind where i still might need a range is a SAM variation of streets with parking on both sides and hopefully the same with road ( maybe replacing one of the NWM options? ), i have now already accurate scale pavement textures that i wanted to implement along with my Sergels Torg and Kulturhuset releases but found learning about modding too much bother then.

Hi! Never done this before, but I'd like to try and create some personal textures and ensure that they don't conflict with any existing textures. May I request a range? Also, what is a range?  :D If you have x as the start of the range and y as the end of the range, what is in between? Maybe there is an explanation somewhere of what numbers falls between the two values.

Each texture needs a unique ID number, so your range covers a complete range of unique texture IDs available for your use. Basically, any number between x and y will not conflict with an existing texture.

The one thing to bear in mind with textures is that certain digits have specific functions. The final digit indicates the zoom level of the texture, for example, so each texture will actually take up 5 different ID numbers, rather than just 1 ID.

Also, one of the digits (I forget which one -- it's been a while since I made textures) is used for making wealth-dependent textures. If you use certain numbers for that digit, the textures will act funny, so you'll need to avoid those numbers for that digit.

The best how-to resource for creating textures (IMO) is the GoFSH manual. Which is convenient, because GoFSH is also the best tool available for turning image files into FSH textures (again, IMO). I've just allotted F9380000 through F93BFFFF to you.  Being that these are hexadecimal numbers, each digit will go from 0-9, plus A (10), B (11), C (12), D (13), E (14), and F (15), so when you get up to, say, 0xF938009#, you have another six digits you can use for the seventh digit, and can then keep going up to 0xF93800F#, instead of having to immediately go up to 0xF938010#.  In theory, you have 262,144 IIDs available within your range, though as BartonThinks has described with the zooms and wealths, you're looking at spots for fewer textures than that, but still, space for tens of thousands of textures.

Hmmm, I was going through the "How to create and Mod Textures" tutorial on Simtropolis, but I'm already stuck. The FSH files created by iLive Reader can't be read by FiSHMan or GoFiSH, both say the files are corrupt. So before I even started.... *sigh*

Particularly for smaller/initial batches, null45's PngToFshBatch is a really useful utility.  I tend to use GoFSH for larger, more complicated projects, and PngToFshBatch for the quick-and-dirty stuff.

As far as your BAT installation issue goes, I suspect the BAT is reading the Windows Registry to look for the installation.  If you by chance had your SC4 installation somewhere else and later moved it (or switched installs--i.e. you had a disc copy and then went to a digital copy), it's possible the Registry is still referring to the old location.  regedit.exe will show you--the registry key usually used for SC4 on 64-bit Windows is Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Maxis\SimCity 4, and the InstallDir key is where the Registry has the installation directory installed.
