Title: The Eaton MD
Post by: Sober on June 10, 2007, 11:00:39 PM
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F4557%2Featonvilleoverviewthumbqe4.jpg&hash=9a0d156841a091f0d7d5e06f449b3a0f96b088f3) (http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/2079/eatonvilleoverviewpt8.jpg)

Well, the region isn't much of an ... original one to do for an MD per se, but let's just work on the assumption I've only had SC4 for about a year, and I'd rather not tackle terraforming too much, nor am I exactly trying to outdo anyone else (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=1272.0) at it (And fail miserably). But that's not to say I can't have fun with this, which is the whole point. Oh, and those assumptions are truths. :) I've played SimCity since my friend got me to play SC2000, then I got hooked on it, then 3000 and then I finally decided to pick up SC4 about a year ago. So I have a bit of idea what I was getting into. But enough of this life story, I'll save it for another post before I bore everyone here.

Rather wordy intro, I might say
I started Eaton maybe a month or so back but only put a bit more time into it since all I have is a single course for summer (still 1st year at U of T). I've gone through a bit of the Maxis Berlin region, then a Toronto region I got off the STEX, but it was too small for me. Then I decided to grab a more popular map then see how far I'd get on it. Well, Eaton is a nice 20482 bitmap, and I was throughly pleased it's a 64 large city sized region. I've only gone through 4, and I can easily say I'm never going to be finished on those 4, or even be satisfied with just those four. Time to get ambitious.

Of course, anyone else can pick up the region map on the STEX, here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=5315). It's a pretty flat region with some hills to the south, with a set of rivers running into a larger body of water. I'm sure the creator made an MD/CJ on Eaton when he first made the map (I'm working with that assumption since he made some Lots for his region and CJ), and I've seen another CJ on ST on Eaton. But I'm going to put my own spin on it.

***I know nothing of this region, how it fits into any context of wherever it may be found in whatever other fictional canon, if it does or does not, and I have not read the creator's CJ (if it exists, or if it ever did at all), so I'm going to play it out as if it was something original. Even though it isn't. Just forget the line before this. Good.

In the beginning...
There was Eaton. It was assumed it was always there. Noone is quite sure when humans broke off from the limping demon monkeys and evolved, or if evolution was even real, that Eaton was actually only 26 minutes old when the first cities appeared as the crazy preachers downtown Eatonville say it was, but what is known is that the "region" of Eaton is ruled by the Mayor (such a humble title) Kelvin (that would be my real name, you can call me that if you wish), and promises he will always rule the region (he had used God Mode when he founded the city, so he may see his city rise to greatness, or disparity, whichever may come first). His original founding fathers (and mothers) of Eaton are long gone for the most part, replaced by advisors when they get to old or the Mayor decides they have outlived their usefulness and ... disposes of them, and replaces them with a new clone from his secret underground lab. But you didn't hear that from me. That explains why it always seems the same advisors keep bothering you with issues through the passage of time. You'd think he'd get some more competent advisors.

This was Eaton, as it was before the first people arrived.

How this MD (and I) work...
It's mostly ad lib. Quite simply that, except for putting the pictures together and planning (for the most part) the cities, everything posted about the region or what a picture is 'saying', I will have something by the time before I hit the "Post" button. The unexpected. How exciting*. Also, the planning is not as on the spot, since I have a bit of a thing for realism in my cities (I keep telling myself that), alot of my inspiration is taken from where I live, and where I visit (and have visited), and I try to incorporate some of that into my cities. Or Google Earth. Or Street View on Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/help/maps/streetview/). MD-wise, who knows? Only time will tell, but this is for fun (getting the creative juices going, and keeping them going), and I hope you read this (most particularily read, too many words to the next picture, huh?).

*Also, I am the mayor, but don't find it too strange if I refer to myself in the third person, or dive right into role-playing myself as the mayor. Especially if I switch back and forth a couple of times in the same sentence.

Alright, here we go
Welcome to Eatonville! The founding city in the region of Eaton, and I'm sure you've seen this thumbnail on your way in, but repeating is a good way to geting attention from others, so here we go again! Eatonville is the first and founding city of Eaton, and citizen here are particularily proud of living here, especially descendents of the founding families.

Hint: Click for a larger picture :)
This is Eatonville today, divided by the Eaton River (didn't see that coming, did ya?) into North and South Eatonville.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F9642%2Fhighrisesoldpt9.jpg&hash=1fc264a321306206ac958742efb0083d0bcd79d0)
The first highrises in Eatonville, on the South side, some company (whose name will escape me until next time I post) put up five of them just along the side of the river.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F5524%2Fhighrisestodayht1.jpg&hash=842f2d243c7e2ac4b1f3fa75e785753b71e5e9e0)
The same location, but years later of development and growth. Though an expensive endevour, (and after a rather heated arguement with the contractor), only two were left because the mayor didn't feel these highrises were needed and were quite unsightly. This also caused some problems with North and South Eatonians, since the North Eatonians live in the area where Eatonville, and Eaton, was first founded, seeing this as an attack on their pride. Plus, they were confusing to some who lived near the region, especially to Eatonians visiting relatives since they sometimes forgot which building their relatives lived in, sometimes going through four of the massive highrises only to be in the wrong one each time.

The North side of the Eaton River. Mid- and high-rises dominate North Eaton, particularily high-rise condos going along the area where the North and South and joined by bridges.

This was an old park (file photo - lost) until it was renovated a couple of years ago to fit in with the wealth and growth in the area. Some of the original buildings still stand around the park while a high-rise towers above the park (and provides some shade late in the evening).

The old pier around since the founding of Eatonville. The city council has promised a huge renovation project here when Eaton's population hits half a million (Current population - just above 485 000).

Eaton today.

Some archived pictures of Eatonville in it's early days:

One of the first churches in Eatonville. And some deviant mischiefs caught TP'ing a tree (http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/232/tpoldfn8.jpg)
These kinds of shops are no longer found in Eatonville except in the darkest alleys. (http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1218/oldcsgh6.jpg)
Picture of the old suburbs in Eaton (http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/6742/oldburbshb2.jpg)

That's all for now :)

Great start!
I really like the shot of the park. The composition is excellent.

Looking forward to seeing more!

A very nice introduction, and yes I did read everything and I even quite enjoyed it.
Eaton seems like great city so far and I look forward to see what you will be doing with the rest of this map.

Well, I welcome you to Ennawye, which is another flourishing city south of Eatonville. No river partitions the city, so there is a large, uninterrupted city. Well, actually the city is built strangely, and that is once of the main attractions. See so for yourself:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg505.imageshack.us%2Fimg505%2F9367%2Fcenterwp6.jpg&hash=0c69150d652336bfcc041af1e36869acac69d4c9)

There is a small community (quite religious - bonus points if you can spot the church in the bottom left and the religious school) that would rather not let their part of the city be replaced with high-rises; they don't mind they shade they offer, though. They essentially lie in the middle of the city, which is a weird place to place a small community, but noone complains. It's quite quaint, and they are pretty welcoming (except for those contractors who want high rises). So it's been left in peace.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg505.imageshack.us%2Fimg505%2F28%2Fcenterparkye4.jpg&hash=880ccc5bf5c669e7370282e88c3625f445b9b02d)
The community park at a lower altitude. Usually a huge mob appears in the morning rush hour through the park for those who live south (of the picture) since that is really the only bus stop and bus route for those who don't live closer to the larger arterial roads.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg505.imageshack.us%2Fimg505%2F245%2Fmariottdayit5.jpg&hash=6aa227f78b2ade18e20980ea1a166b14e23862da)

Construction of the Mariott Hotel allowed for hundreds of jobs, and cages rooms for visiting tourists. Located in the business district, many surrounding businesses find how easy it is to get people over here to close business deals than to use video conferencing.

Some mosaics:

Oh, and:

I wish I could explain this. Just stare in awe.

Replies  (some very belated ::) ):
Mulefisk: thanks, I really like that part shot too. Maybe I should grab an evening/sunset shot and see how that goes later, if that building is still standing  :D

bat: thanks for the support (x2 in fact). Point anything out if you think it looks weird, especially when it comes to plopping, I'm especially nitpicky with it

kwakelaar: thanks for reading, and yes, I'm also excited to see what I'll do to this region over time

Well, time to celebrate Happy 500,000 plus to Eaton, as in, the population decided to soar past 500,000. As such, to fullfill promises and such, the old flimsy near-lifeless pier has been hit with the paddles (and God's circular terraforming tools, 'cause he sure likes them circles), then after a few thousand simoleons later, a couple of cusses and endless accidentally demolishing all that hard work to get it just right, I present:

Well, I haven't named it yet. We decided to name it after the first ship that pulled into dock, but calling it the Dusseldorf-Fromandschmitz Quay, kinda made us question if it was that great of an idea. (jeez, who names their boat that?) We have people working on a new name.

...

I have just been informed, that in a landslide vote of 12-3 from a bunch of random people surveyed on the street, we are keeping the name. Stupid public, what do they know? :P

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg529.imageshack.us%2Fimg529%2F897%2Fnewdocksqy0.jpg&hash=17512c7ef7a8f309c0ff3a270b318bb542900a3d)
Here is the new pier, still at the same location, at the end of Main St., but much of the land was replaced everywhere. So it took a bit of patience to terraform it correctly with the god mode tools, and the CDK lots are pretty picky, but it was fun nonetheless.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg529.imageshack.us%2Fimg529%2F4351%2Fnewdocksentrancedn5.jpg&hash=50678d0b4086b44d639fbe44900070293e8b87a2)
The main entrance into the pier. Parking is just a turn away. Not show in a greater zoom are the food courts, where they serve mainly fish 'n chips and anything guaranteed to give you scury. Arrrrr!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg529.imageshack.us%2Fimg529%2F3140%2Fnewdocksstoresrd4.jpg&hash=0f713da6272ffeee98044a265ccb4006be370cb9)
The giftshops are on this side, plus a wooden plaza for looks. The giftshop at the bottom centre always has Seinfeld reruns running from the minute they open. So, if you're here on vacation or just on your lunch break, there's Seinfeld at least.

That's all I have for now, I spent quite a deal of time trying to get that. Hopefully I'll get some industrial sector pics up, it'll have you sickly pale how I make those darn coal miners down in the dark all day.

Oh well, that's never stopped me. :)

Welcome to Carson's Paradise! Keep the children behind, not because we're heading to the casino later, but because unless you like to stunt your children's growth (if you don't chain smoke in the home already and feed them food laced with ear medicine), they shouldn't be coming along. We also don't supply gas masks, but don't worry if you didn't bring one, there are people to carry your unconscious body back to the hospital for inhaling the melange of smoke, chemicals and ... well, I never never knew what the third thing was, but it's just as lethal.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg178.imageshack.us%2Fimg178%2F7852%2Fheaderye6.jpg&hash=a85a9ae6ee0866676838c1dd0aa820ad0d9d178b)
It's a concrete jungle too, but the smokestacks are the trees now.

Carson's Paradise would be a misnomer for most people, especially the soot-covered workers who (almost) inhabit the coal mines and work the oil derricks, or just get occasionally less dirty in the manufacturing plants. After petitions to move all the smokestack and assembly line-based industries out of Eatonville and Ennawye, it eventually passed. The man leading the relocation of these industries was Carson O. Genic, the guy the neighbours complained about because he chain smokes 4 packs of cigarettes a day around children, but was as healthy as 2 oxen. He's the kind of guy who said he like the smell of burning coal in the morning. Well, anyways, I gave him the job to watch the development of the industrial sector here, and he called it paradise. He isn't the kind of guy you'd invite to weddings, but he's done a good job. Carson still runs most of the sector, particularily the coal mining district, while his son, Al R. Genic runs the oil fields.

Shots of the oil refinery and powerplants, this is where most of the oil in Eaton is brought to be used to power your homes. Everyone loves oil power, except those crazy dudes who bring their armies to you and tell you to hand it over... they're just crazy about it!

...and this is very cool.

Sober, my man, you are way too self-effacing.  This is nifty work here, and shows a great deal of promise.  I got caugth up in other stuff and didn't manage to comment closer to the get-go, but you've gained a place on my "lurk" list, and I won't go so long without commenting down the road.

Nice oil patch, btw.  Hope your wells aren't dry holes.

Good luck!

I love your development-it simply looks right. I have a question, though. In the second picture, what is the building on the far left? I don't think I've seen it before.

Looking forward to more,
Cheers,

Man, those pictures are awesome. I love your oil-industries! I have tried to make them myself once, but where not nearly as beautifull as yours. And refineries are amongst my favourites.....

dedgren: Well thanks, I appreciate the lurking. God knows I lurk around in 3RR once in a while as well ;)

BigSlark: If it's one of the oil refinery buildings, the white/silvery one is the refinery from tag_one on the STEX (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?page=1&Keyword=tag%5Fone&view=all). Also, you should grab some of the refinery props, they sometimes make good fillers and they provide jobs. The black one is just the Maxis Oil power plant. If that's not it, sorry, growables' names just escape my mind (like many other things). If you want, just point to where it is some other time, and I'll get back to you on it if it hasn't grown over.

patfirefghtr: thanks for visiting, appreciate it

sebes: thanks! and I might try a trick (short of touching the mod tools) to see if I can keep the dirt roads with the oil fields the next time I get back (also message to self)

Also, I'm short on updates, but development is going good, just nothing I found noteworthy of displaying. So in that case, I'll just have to be somewhat cryptic (http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/11808/) about what I might be planning on doing soon:

bat: thanks alot, I also like how my industrial sector came out (and is still)

threeswept: Well, SC4's really just the first real time I cared about aesthetics than 2000 and 3K/3KU, but it was still good practice. :)

kwakelaar: buildings at night never cease to amaze me, I really appreciate BATers who nightlight their buildings. In fact, I really need to start playing with the game at night more.

FissileBread: sometimes I like to go overboard with mosaics, that's why I ended up with a 4MB large one I had to host somewhere, heh. Hopefully the JJ Abrams move isn't a LOST spinoff, but sounds like it won't be. Almost fooled me for being part of the Transformers movie for a minute too.

Well, here's what I kinda have in mind in doing, so the monster/exploding/uppercutted Statue-of-Liberty stuff may take a lesser priority because I want to try to get some urban sprawl going, so I've set up a single farming/small town community (for now), get them up and running. Feels homey until I put highways through farmland and replace more with subdivisions! I live in the suburbs, and though it's kind of grid-ish, there are still places where you drive by and that small-farmtown look is still there. The farmland is still there but I'm pretty sure it's no longer being tended to.

But enough of that, I can increase my word count with pictures. Right? 1000 words? Why did I waste all that time writing essays when I could've just used pictures to equate the word count? $%Grinno$%

Now, I'd like to welcome everyone to another small community, here is Fenswick County. Still mostly virgin land, but also lots of farming, this little town is on the outskirts of Ennawye, and as such will eventually have to succumb to urban sprawl. But for now it's a simple farming, small-town community of just over 1900 sims. The city is fairly young so I'm pretty sure we can just trample over their non-existant heritage and 'small-town traditions' fairly easy. With a bulldozer and a couple of Forklifts and put up a few offices. Or a mini-mall! Everyone loves mini-malls!  :) (kinda wishing I had an evil laugh emoticon right about now)

I took inspiration from the town square you would see in Gilmour Girls, the town circle in Stars Hollow. Mostly that it was just a town circle and the gazebo, I added a bit more to it using some park paths and adding a couple more trees and turning the town square park into more of a hill to place the gazebo on rather than just an arbitrary location to be deemed 'town square'.

My take on a sunken highway. This is part of the 340 series highway that runs through Eaton - the 340 runs North/South through Fenswick County and into Farmer's Dozen and is really only sunken through most of Fenswick. Unfortunately the company (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=12982) we contracted to do the walls of the sunken highway had a WDDD Clause (We Don't Do Diagonals), which meant we had to pay someone else to put up some diagonal walls. They don't look pretty, but they keep racoons and Bambi from running out onto the freeway. Owie. Fine print is what really causes roadkill. :P

This is where the 340 currently ends in Farmer's Dozen.

Just almost ready to set into motion some urban sprawl, more in the coming days ...

spot: Luckily for me it's just a habit for me, and saves them the effort of asking sometimes. Have fun looking around my somewhat still sparse MD.

Okay, so as we all know, the CAM came out so I thought I'd give my existing cities a makeover with CAM, and just wow, it completely kicked my population up, and even with my low population (700,000) the CAM still worked wonders. Plus with the new desireability/abandonment files in the CAM, I no longer have to spend so much time demolishing all those dilapidated buildings. So, without further ado, the newly CAM'd up Eatonville:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg167.imageshack.us%2Fimg167%2F8527%2Fcamstartsh7.jpg&hash=2473ea7f06f6fff5e43598d44ebedbd9268c0c2d)
Eatonville at the start of the CAM takeover, this is the business sector, which is now beginning to tower over the pier.

Central Eatonville, present day.

And this is, "The Wall", so aptly named by Eatonville residents. On the Eatonville-Farmer's Dozen border, if one takes a turn south, you will
encounter the high-rise residential area of Eatonville. The towering high-rises bordering the Eaton River of the south have been dubbed "The
Wall", as you can clearly see here.

Although I do like seeing skyscrapers, I only like it in moderation, so I will have to stem some of the growth by rezoning medium densities. I personally don't like seeing too many commercial skyscrapers pop-up in sometimes random spots, I would rather see them as they usually are encountered in the real world, clumped up, and only have the occasional skyscraper out in the middle of (almost) nowhere. Besides, I was planning on levelling a few sections of North and South Eatonville to make room for an East-West running highway. Not too far in, but just to try and catch as many people as I can, and to make preparations for future commuters. :)

Yes, I am off my SC4 hiatus (somewhat painful, but also tingly). CAM is still what I've been trying to master for a while but good news, I shall have at the end. Read onwards, and eventually you'll reach the bottom, where I may say something cool. Or maybe I'm just yanking your chain. But you won't know until you do. ;)

"The Wall" has gotten much bigger now, it seems.  And those seawalls are new. Not a stick of grim or green things on it.

Well, expansion has been good. Up North of the Eaton River, the expansion of Highway 341 (Runs East/West) finds it extended into the business district in North Eaton. This will allow future commuters to travel to Eaton to get to work. The north, anyways. Planning for another highway (or one North/South in Eatonville) is hard since, but fun since we get to blow stuff up to make room!

The North Eaton CBD is just a right turn away...

While still in the North, you've already took the tour of the pier ending on Main St., but we have here a new plaza on the Eaton River. It's a place to just cool down, or grab a bite (and drink) before heading back to the grind.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F2711%2Featonnorthriverplaza2am9.jpg&hash=ce0702f76503933243ed25ba91c7e05d2807955a)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F3804%2Featonnorthriverplaza3zl9.jpg&hash=e365b41a129dcaaf9a5929119776475ad626d07c)

But we can't ignore the South End of Eaton either.... let's take a drive across the river. It seems that the (sea)walls near "The Wall" have made the area seem more enjoyable and desireable. More people are coming out to just hang out while watching the river rush below them.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F2568%2Fseawallspplpx8.jpg&hash=c4d1e56df2005f9fbed5da95935637fba5f5f109)

Here, there huge mess of skyscraping (hopefully the sky has an itch) buildings (as some would call skyscrapers) make up the smaller, but just as bustling business district in South Eaton.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F7865%2Featonvillesouthcbdog1.jpg&hash=0813621b4cd5cdde638298222c2a08e73c4b0a07)

Unlike the North though, the cliffs over the ocean in the South are not as rough or tall, and there is even a small recess that almost resembles of a shore is present. Of course then, we take advantage of this by building Oceanside condos and other residential buildings galore. We did seem to run into a bit of a problem with that, though.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F7510%2Fsouthoceansideexpansioneo4.jpg&hash=df8660e129bfff5d0a4a5d4c8e17209d90053391)
Not a particularily good idea to have the tall buildings in front block the nice ocean view for everyone else. Obviously whoever was really in charge of this was always sick for picture day and the class pictures. Maybe for being freakishly tall?

Here we have another park just north of the oceanside expansion.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F9467%2Fsouthnewparklh3.jpg&hash=f5de5a1543cdfd48cb714c659d33ecf623d9a2c2)

But now we're out of Eatonville. Enough of playing with the CAM. Back to basics, or well, back to one of the food baskets in Eaton. Without food, well ... life would be pretty boring, if not really short. And importing food is pretty much highway robbery.

Welcome back to...

Fenswick County

Last we left it, it was just a small community. But my, what's this?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F9835%2Ffarmsoversn7.jpg&hash=39fa7c80a8a614d1a58aff30823f9cacc1ce6cf9)

More farms seem to have come up. Good for us, variety is the spice of life (except we seem to have misplaced the spice farm somewhere). In the second shot you can see Highway 342 running though Fenswick (East/West) into Ennawye. Seems like the farming community is looking good.

But wait....

What's this?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F5190%2Furbansprawl1os1.jpg&hash=a20e26da063be7e5078afd16bd45deaf516f48a1)

Offices appearing? Is this what we feared? Urban sprawl? Already?

But back to the big picture...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F3120%2Featon260807cz1.jpg&hash=dc7b20efd64d734101e0524c802d1e5c202db4e0)

I've almost hit 1 million! So looks like I'll have to do something special to celebrate this (soon to be) exciting occasion!

paroch: Thanks alot, and I've been following your MD as well!

Here we go again folks: the city can't stop creeping in. Soon, everything might as well be skyscrapers! (Think Coruscant)

This is not your mom and dad's Farmer's Dozen...

First it was a few townhouses:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg519.imageshack.us%2Fimg519%2F7613%2Ftownhouseboomvz6.jpg&hash=965a5eef9fd9b40940fd5fc9d4abffb69f17ae0b)

Then they ran out of room at the Eatonville-Farmer's Dozen border, so they thought that it wouldn't here to have some of the offices ... creep over to the other side...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg519.imageshack.us%2Fimg519%2F7935%2Fofficesandstuffup9.jpg&hash=d93138ef3d67daea8f2d0ff261c8f70c1afcb357)

But boy oh boy, here come the heavy hitters, the high-rises. Still near the border, but it'll come across soon...

More of the park:

Picture 1:  Matthew Keenan Townhouses are one of my favourites and a long rown like that in different colours looks absolutely spot on.   $%Grinno$%

Picture 3:  I like the three towers that are the same.  Not sure I've seen them before.  Do you know what they're called and where I can find them? (And are they commercial or resi?)

Picture 4:  Very nice park.  Simple, yet interesting at the same time.  And I admire your patience - those diagonal and curved paths drive me insane.  It takes me ages to line them up properly  ()what().  I usually give up and revert to simple straight lines!

Nice update - well done.

Ennedi: Yeah, I always kinda liked giving my screenshots an extra shot of colour. And best wishes to your region as well, I've been creeping around too ;)

bat: Glad you like the park!

patfirefghtr: Being nice to sims is always hard! And nothing gets done if you won't use the bulldozer! (Don't worry, I spared the women and children :P)

paroch: The towers are (when queried) R$$ Stage 8 MarinaResidence. A quick search on the STEX has the original set of lots here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=16229). Otherwise, grab the appropriate CAM set (one of the residential ones) and you'll get 'em. And keep trying with those parks, those non-straight ones produce the best results always, but just take more time. The harder part is when you have blank squares. Even after you fill them up with the appropriate matching grass texture, you probably want to populate that space with trees, and I found to some effect, ploppable rocks help too :)

Nisha: That's right, you can't stop progress... unless my hard drive crashes and I disappear :P

Ok, going by MD rules, I think this last update will soon bump me up a bit... but more on that when I hit the post button, of course! (and the proceeding moments after)

I haven't hit a million yet, but everyone loves seeing farmers being displaced, and the horrible nightmare of .... subdivisions coming to life! Oh the cruelty. But for now:

Fenswick County obviously is being affected from being so close the city centres of Eatonville and Ennawye:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg502.imageshack.us%2Fimg502%2F5117%2Ffarmabandon1kp0.jpg&hash=9009f82c846a645ecbe9291306fb21459653f003)

Farmers obviously can't cope with the businesses moving in; whether it's not loud and noisy, or supermarkets are outselling the weekly farmer's markets - well I don't know! I'm a mayor, not a farmer!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg502.imageshack.us%2Fimg502%2F7707%2Funhappysimsdh1.jpg&hash=2907a7156e9d050ed184d85b92db67265035f8e9)
And of course some residents have decided to pack their bags as well. Hey, can't keep everyone happy...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg502.imageshack.us%2Fimg502%2F8215%2Fcoketowerrm8.jpg&hash=e0e3b6bfc76d60c134ffea5664b930cb2afe4c2d)

Well, you commented at my MD so....

Love your agriculture. Your city seems caught between low and high wealth. Interesting.

Personally I'd say to add lots more low wealth. If you have the lot editor spend some time to make some filler lots - generic, some props. Those make the city come to life. Or you could do like badsim if you wanted to go nuts with it

Hey Kelvin,

Nice update and congratulations on being 'promoted' to the Ones to Watch board.

The grass in Eaton seems so very green - do you have a terrain modd installed?

Thanks for the info on the towers and I'll keep plugging away with the curvy parks.

Don't forget to visit West End's latest update - now you're on a different board I'd hate you to forget us newly published MDs!! ;) ;)

Great update.  I like the pictures and the farming sector coming right up on the town.
&idea If I could suggest one thing, it would be to try using the RHW right up to the last minute than change it to the avenue close to the city.  I hope this makes sense.   ;) I think the avenues in the farming sector with planters and the sidewalks doesn't look very real.  But this is just my humble opinion.  ;)

flame1396: Thanks, glad you like the farms and everything! And yes, I'm probably very bound to get into using the Lot Editor and everything; nearly every game I've played with a mod community, I've participated in! Filler lots are a good idea but for farms, I prefer to just plant trees to simulate forests being clearcut for farm land or plop a bunch in a row to simulate hedgerows.

patfirefghtr: No way, Coke > Pepsi until the end of time, or whoever blows each other up first ;)

bat: Thanks alot bat!

paroch: Yes, I'm using the Meadowshire Terrain Mod. Though the region I'm playing on is kinda flat at the moment so the terrain looks kinda boring/repetitive for now. And don't worry, I don't forget Recently Published MDs! I was one, remember? ;)

rooker1: Actually, that is a pretty interesting idea! Well the avenue would go Ave-RHW-Ave but who cares if you only see 2 tiles of it. I'll have to try that out, since I started fiddling with the RHW just recently.

Looks like I'm stuck with playing SC4 on weekends only, or if I really don't feel like doing any "homework" (It's not homework when you're in university! Especially as a second year student :P)

Seeing I've never been around here...

Your pictures look very nice.  You have an interesting concept incorporating the skyscrapers into the suburban sprawl, though you might want to consider adding some vast, endless parking lots around the office complexes.  It'd really up the realism factor.

porter66083: Well, after a couple hundred cans of force-fed Coca Cola, I'm sure you'll like it ;)

Ok, this update has been actually delayed a couple of times, but alright, here we go. I hit 1 million in the region a while ago, and of course, I like to celebrate milestones, so let's start with the picture:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg530.imageshack.us%2Fimg530%2F6097%2Featon1milliy9.jpg&hash=3578dec1602555407ade2e3eb2eb51bea778f1ad)

Of course, all my residents celebrate too:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg530.imageshack.us%2Fimg530%2F6985%2F1milfireworksmd4.jpg&hash=362167384abe61b55b1ec25337d0b4f99cf39514)

Not too much to say, but as soon as I find the time (or balance vs. getting midterms/studying done with SC4 - as if :P), I'll do something nice for the citizens of Eaton. I already parcelled off a good portion of land in Eatonville, (probably for a biiiiiiig park), plus I need to put those Mayor statue rewards I haven't plopped to good use somewhere, right?  $%Grinno$%

Also, I threw in a picture of a small park for good measure:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg530.imageshack.us%2Fimg530%2F3766%2Fparkwn3.jpg&hash=f7a997f343796c54609aa181568a454c8336247b)

Hopefully more within a month (which feels so long all of a sudden)

thundercrack83, bat: Thanks, and I'll try not to keep you guys waiting any longer ;)
paroch: Well, I've got a good 50 or so large city tiles to play on, and this game can never end :)

Although we should celebrate, today is a day of Remebrance (Otherwise known as Independence Day in Poland and Angola; St. Martin's Day in the Netherlands; Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth, Armistice Day in Europe and Veterans Day in the United States). Eaton too is remembering those who fought in the wars of past and present for all those who died for our freedom.

The Eaton War Memorial and Cemetary is located south on the 340 in the small community (for now) of McCaul's Watchtower. Francis McCaul was a soldier in the First World War from Eaton, and his acts of bravery were commended; he was the first casualties of war and was first to be buried here. The Cemetary also houses civilians, but is rather expensive to reserve a plot in this graveyard.

Mmmmmm, Nice Park!

That is a pretty big park you've developed there Sober - great work.

And the newspaper report showcases it particularly well.  The raised bit of the park is a nice touch, not seen that before.  I'm glad you're back with us and treating us to updates from Eaton.

Showing us construction is also pretty cool.

I look forward to more.

Whoa, okay, another month inbetween; I really hate this so time to kick my SC4'ing into overdrive during the holidays. Stupid exams made me want to explode  :bomb:

Replies!

bat: Gonna have to work on the newspaper format because it might be just a tad too big and it's missing all the actual front-page clutter, but thanks!

paroch: Construction was the harder part because I already knew where everything was going to be ... again :P

Hah, that construction site would've been alot easier if I had just built that first then replaced it with the part!  $%Grinno$%

So what I did during the holidays - bring more of the city life into Farmer's Dozen. All the obvious components are coming into place, and even those nice houses might (might) have to make way for more taller buildings, but we'll see how it goes...

So this is an updated overview of the region, there are a few changes to the north of the river but nothing worth nothing. It's actually fairly obvious the farms are quickly being abandonned when you see the fields and then a dark 'spot'.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg244.imageshack.us%2Fimg244%2F6518%2Foverviewwl1.jpg&hash=07074c0b2bb785b2352a78311f0e47f2e93dc6f6)

You can see the farm buildings abandonned more closely here. If it were further from the core out I'd leave the field much longer but I'll have to replace it with some parks and plazas now :)

Some parks I cobbled together. (I really like parks, don't I?) I actually like the red paths, I might try to figure out how to use the LE and put red paths better grass and make some other fillers for the low-wealth ones.

The sandpaths are cool too, just tried them out but I might change how I place them seeing as their widths are different from what I usually use.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg244.imageshack.us%2Fimg244%2F6553%2Fsandpathssm9.jpg&hash=274f445e51489e6da086cd5a04b8b86dfacc794d)

And a highschool. Somewhat typical to the ones I went to with large sports fields and I also tried to put in the side road entrance in the bottom-right.

Very nicely done, Kelvin! Your building style reminds me of what I need to add more of to the suburbs of Nyhaven. Keep up the excellent work :)

Nice update there Sober.

I really like the school - I tend to agree that wherever possible schools should have plenty of space for playing fields and sports pitches.  And the entrance is a nice touch.
