Hi folks,

As this project is becoming bigger dimensions every day I decided to open a new topic to show all the works which are done by me and helpfull friends to complete this project one day. At first i'd say sorry for my english, i know it's not the best but hopefully you'd understand me ;).

Well, the plan is to recreate the destroyed city center of Potsdam, situated in general around the "Alter Markt". For having an idea what i'm talking about i've put an overview of all the projects which will be done.

In detail this are at the moment:

1. Lange Brücke
2. Palasthotel
3. Palais Barberini
4. Stadtschloss
5. Knobelsdorffhaus
6. Rathaus
7. Obelisk
8. Nikolaikirche
9. Marstall
10. Corner building at Alter Markt
11. Alte Kommandatur
12. Stadtkanal

The first works, like Nikolaikirche, Obelisk and Rathaus you can allready find on my BAT-thread:

Potsdamer Stadtschloss

I will start (go on) with a small introducion about the Stadtschloss of Potsdam.
At first you should know, that Potsdam today is the capital of the german state Brandenburg. But at the time when the Stadtschloss was built it was just a part of Prussia. While Berlin was growing very fast with the cultural development and the military successes of Prussia and especially his king Friedrich the great (1712 - 1786), Potsdam became finally residential city of Prussia.

While the governmental work was done in the capital Berlin, the royal family prefered to stay the most of their time in Potsdam, just in front of Berlin's gates. Any King, and later german emperor, had his own favourite castle to stay in Potsdam. One of them was the Stadtschloss, located at the Alter Markt just in the heart of the city. After some early kings used it as their residence in the last days of Prussia and during the german empire it was just used as a formal residence but not more as a place to live.
After the fall of the empire with the end of the monarchy, caused by the november revolution 1918, it became a museum and was restaurated in the 30ies.

Potsdam was almost not destroyed during the second world war. But on april 14th 1945 the historic city center was hardly attacked by a allied bomber squadron. The Stadtschloss an a lot of buildings close to it were hardly damaged and burnt out. During the battle of Berlin Potsdam had the function of an outpost, observing the moves of the red army. The russians answered with a strong artillery attack. The anyway strongly damaged city center was now destroyed completelly. The west wing of the Stadtschloss was hit by artillery which blowed a big hole in the wing and seperated it from the rest of the building.

After the war the ruin of the Stadtschloss became a usual view in the city center and there were made plans to rebuilt it. A commission of architects and arts specialists declared that around 80% of the walls were still in a very good static condition, so that a restauration of the Stadtschloss would be possible.
But when the GDR authorities showed the plans for their new city center it became quickly clear, that they planed to blow up the rests of the Stadtschloss, even this happened some years ago in Berlin.
On november 1959 started the works and until april 1960 the rests of the Stadtschloss were eliminated from the city view.

After the end of the socialist GDR regime and the reunification of the two german states the people in Potsdam started to find a way to get their old city center back, which was still in the mind of many people. A famous german showmatser and Potsdam citicen, Günther Jauch, donated to the city the rebuilded Fortunaportal.

After a long fight against critics and problems like the financial question the government of the state Brandenburg declared their will to bild a new state parlament in the cubature of the Stadtschloss.

The historical elements, like pilasters or statues, will be payed by donations. The constraction work should be finished until 2012. Historic fragments which are stored in many places of the city and number around 600 pieces will be used.

Well, i hope you enjoyed this short information about the Stadtschloss. For my "Alter Markt - Potsdam" project it is the most essential building. Even if the modell is not completelly finished i would like to show you the most important parts of the building

 Very impressive.  &apls
This model is great and all the small details are incredible.  How many hours do you think you have put into this model so far?  You must have a lot of patience.  This square you are developing should look awesome once completed.  I can't wait to see the final stage.

This is a great project, and it is wonderful to read the the Potsdam Stadtschloss will be rebuilt. It was very sad to visit that amazingly beautiful place and see the main square without it, especially knowing that it could have been rebuilt after the war but instead was demolished.

The BAT is very beautifully done; the roof textures in particular are really perfect. Do you use gmax or Max?

Amazing and ambitious project. Good luck. I will be following this thread.

This is fantastic work, and is another of the treasures lost during/after 2ww. I am really happy to see this being recreated for Simcity.

Thanks a lot Carlos. I also couldn't wait and spent my very unspectacular and boring day in creating another house of the Alter Markt. I just called it "Eisenwaren J. W. Voigt"...

hope you like this too.
