brrr Cold in Alaska, but I guess you are used to it. This weekend in the Netherlands it was still almost 20 degrees but the end of the week we will have 9 degrees as a mid day maximum (that is Celcius not Fahrenheit).

 Congrats on finishing that huge map!

Now as you can see i'm fairly new to posting and commenting on the CJ's (i think this is my 104th post) so i am not sure if i qualify yet as a lurker. But i will wear my lurkers badge with pride just as soon as i receive it.

I am looking foward to see if you can fill that entire region dedgren, and i am sure you will not be short of volunteers.

If I could have been here sooner, I would have tell you to remove all your plugins to get the rendering way faster ( on my home pc, it tooks me 8 seconds to switch between city )
so 256*8 sec = 2048sec, well still long time but I bet you have take much than 34 min to render the new 3RR
anyway congrat on finishing it !

And, thank you for the beautiful photographs of Alaska in the snow, I love looking a pictures of snow. One of the reasons I make time to visit TRR is you humor, thank you for that too![/data][/row]

...and there you have it [ linkie ] (//http://).

Now for some initial steps in terraforming.

I plan to terraform the region from the top left (the northwest corner) one row at a time to the east.

Here's 3RR162 as it stands this morning (10-30-06  8:30 a.m. AST  GMT-9).

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg61.imageshack.us%2Fimg61%2F2199%2Fterraforming02yx2.png&hash=5d3644d9d459d929f70048f60c28f03f5dffb2e6)

I'll go back and forth between quads lining up the boundaries until I get them right, and then move on to the next one.  I won't terraform along the southern boundary until I'm ready to do the next row.

...and, of course, as you'll see in a minute, I changed this plan a little when I reached the eastern edge of the region.

Here's a closer view of the northwest corner area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg265.imageshack.us%2Fimg265%2F5139%2Fterraforming0201yc1.jpg&hash=f31e7e8ca555df687d9a064b15bea49548c42072)

Here's two close ups of mountains that have been (at least initially) terraformed in the top row of quads up in the northwest corner.

Here's a close up of the northeastern corner.  The highest elevations in the region will be in this area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg265.imageshack.us%2Fimg265%2F5719%2Fterraforming0204jz9.jpg&hash=8ad9a0606511a88926433de010b800f0f23dea06)

Two close up pics again follow.  You'll note in the first that I have moved into the second row (quads 17-32) with the terraforming.  The two green circles...

...those are actually ovals, truth be told...

...OK, ovals, identify places where the edge alignment of the two quads there still need to be completely matched up, which is a tedious back-and-forth procedure until it is right.   The green line at the bottom of the first pic is the approximate edge of the bottom of the second row.  Note that I have narrowed and substantially cleaned up the banks of the Roaring Fork river.

Which peak do you think the 3RRGS has named Rayden Mountain?

I have plans for several things I will be doing in the next little bit (24-72 hours or so).  I plan to do some before-and-after comparisons of terraformed areas.  I will also do a presentation on river and stream widths (thank you again, Matt (threestooges) for bringing that issue to my attention).  Finally, I want very much to respond to the really great comments so many of you have left recently.

Later.

EDIT:  (10-31-06)  Changed format of some pics from PNG to JPG.  Sorry, Shadow, I was on a roll when I first posted this.  DE

[/data][data]You're welcome. I'll keep coming up with things to make you work until you get back to that message you promised (just kidding... I wouldn't do that to you.) I'll do it b/c it makes the overall project better, and gets another great tutorial to boot. This is some impressive progress, you must have a pretty decent system (or a fair bit of time). There is one point I noticed (although it is likely you've already taken care of it) in the pic of Rayden Mountain, the river breaks up at the narrowest point. Can't wait to see the final terraform and the start of the flora detailing. Keep it up.[/data][/row]

Please, for the love of God, don't use PNGs. Just paint the background white, and save as jpg.   :P

Er, you should have bigger mountains there in the north-east, don't you think?  :P

QuoteEr, you should have bigger mountains there in the north-east, don't you think?

Here's a quad=size (2.5 mi2/4 km2) bit of a 1:63,360 topo map of the area just nortth of where I live.  It's pretty "peaky."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg288.imageshack.us%2Fimg288%2F4645%2Fmountaintopoki7.png&hash=b2367361d6d82216f1958f27caeaf2712bfef31d)

...hope that's a word...

Anyway, have a look and see what you (along with everyone else) think.  I plan to terraform until I get it reasonably right, at least for horizontal scale.  Vertical scale, as we will see, is always exaggerated in SC4 mountainous areas.

Off to trial... [/size][/data][/row]

[/data][data]Hi David,
WOW that's what I call a big project!
I only used SC4 terraformer for some small tests, one of those was with Yosemite Valley California By Beskhu3epnm (//http://)
I wanted to try out Jeronij's snow mod with it. And I never noticed any of those kinks that we see in the pics with the green circles, errrr.... ovals.
And when you say that it's a tedious back and forth procedure to correct it, are you doing the corrections in SC4 or directly in SC4Terraformer? Can't we do that kind of corrections directly in it on a regional scale? I thought we could... (puzzled   ???  )

Anyhow back on the map itself, this is one heck of a map my friend! And to make it a collective work! I'm looking forward to examine all the (numerous) updates  this magnificent region of yours will generate!
No snow yet on our side of the continent, but getting colder every day. Snow tires are installed leaves are raked, I'm ready!

Take care my friend!

[/data][data]David,
I love the topo map.   (Of course I love ALL maps but topos are my favorite.)   Heres a challange when you are done making 3RR.   Let make a topo map of each quad.  It could be done by using ctrl/shft/C.   Well that would get your primary elevations.    Hmmmm, could be sorta fun, in a sick OCD sorta way.     :D

[/data][data]Well, you've got a point, but in proportion to the foothills, the mountains are too small and spiky  :P You can still have a lot of points, but they just look too small. It's probably the way SC4 deals with scale  :P  [/data][/row]

[/data][data]Those mountains look a bit too small, more in part to an optical ilusion, because of the map being too big and David not using a snow mod. If there was snow visible, they would't look that small. That's what I think, before I see one of those mountain quads open. [/data][/row]
