Title: A Compendium of Interchanges....
Post by: mightygoose on June 02, 2007, 12:36:02 PM
well originally i started as motorway madness in the post your tutorial thread on ST [linkie] (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=23&threadid=75821&enterthread=y&STARTPAGE=2)and now the new nam is out with highway onslope pieces... i thought it was time to revamp it and deal with interchanges as a subject.... this will sort of be an encyclopedia/mayor diary. as i meander through the vast possibilities of network interactions within the scope of sc4.

anyway here is a teaser showing the possibilities using the new highway onslopes grouped as close as possible in a number of situations i think will appear in alek's MD very shortly :P

more details soon

P.S. this seemed the most logical place for this thread.

Wow that looks great, if only there was a place for me to use it! By the way, where did you get those embankment pieces/walls from?

update 1

i think i will begin with then new highway onslope pieces as they are something we are all new to. i might like to point out that for the first part until there is enough to make a decent compendium this will take on the form of a showcase. i will post construction tutorials if certain setups proove difficult for you guys to recreate. it will be quite advanced stuff here exploiting the nuances of the NAM to create quite complex junctions with sophisticated functions. to start of though some simple ones.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg507.imageshack.us%2Fimg507%2F9937%2Fraisedhighwayunderboutjpo8.jpg&hash=0c862099de0d1a74f4be59e6ecb85a73c8dffb4d)

this is a raised HW. a hole has been made in the cutting and a roundabout placed in the gap. along one side of the raised HW is a OWR. on the other side is a terminating avenue on the diagonal. although neither connect to the HW(i told you i would start simple) this is a great space saving idea, as well as adding an element of realism.(you also get to use some cool junction textures).

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg391.imageshack.us%2Fimg391%2F4660%2Fraisedhighwayunderboutjek3.jpg&hash=7cce4f65e5ca3360db8581716a838900b8d187f9)

this is the same from the other side.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg467.imageshack.us%2Fimg467%2F8712%2Fraisedhighwayunderpassrkq2.jpg&hash=27d67b47926c931b7c591f4a96e06a832354a904)

this is a simple one direction on/offramp setup on an underpassing road. a slightly wider hole in the cutting is needed for this particular interchange.
it uses two perpendicular to road offramps that auto prompt when dragging the road under the elevated HW section.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg383.imageshack.us%2Fimg383%2F8839%2Fraisedhighwayunderpassrkb6.jpg&hash=a8b64ee43bceae154a90a31f8d7e455c7b2dd09f)

again a reverse angle shot.

now this first updates most complex interchange.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg528.imageshack.us%2Fimg528%2F165%2Fraisedhighwayunderpassakx4.jpg&hash=7acd139d10af6df68802f374fb7cf04f48c8126d)

this avenue underpass does not connect to the raised HW but has no direct right turn onto the OWR parallel to it. this problem is solved by a slip road onto the OWR prior to the traffic lights. however prior to the sliproad the OWR is in fact two way allowing for left turns from the avenue sliproad only.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg366.imageshack.us%2Fimg366%2F2734%2Fraisedhighwayunderpassald9.jpg&hash=24b8176a449de4a8dbe6566121ae6a1aeb06c6c1)

here you can see the OWR crossing the avenue with a distinct abscence of a turning lane. in case this is a little confusing the last picture i have drawn the possible paths on over the top.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg489.imageshack.us%2Fimg489%2F6493%2Fraisedhighwayunderpassarn6.jpg&hash=6601f1803069100f6fd135d0c23baa973dad0377)

finally a couple of eyecandy shots.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg134.imageshack.us%2Fimg134%2F537%2Fbuddybud8monslopetunnelkh0.jpg&hash=68b2a5ea0eff468f6103a0b91d0783a70734e866)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg511.imageshack.us%2Fimg511%2F7796%2Frandomeyecandy1fe2.jpg&hash=5acd5dafec3d36e205841a528828f63a318e7dbb)

thanks for stopping by... replies will be handled when there are more of them :P

This is a very interesting thread you've started here, mightygoose. These new On-Slope Highway Pieces are simply revolutionary. In the two posts you've done so far, I've already gotten a wealth of knowledge and inspiration! I can't wait to see what else you'll be tackling.

Wow, you've started nice and simple, and yet by the end of just this first update I couldn't figure out your interchanges :P. Great work, hope to see some more beautiful and innovative interchanges.

update 2

well first replies....

thanks Patfirefghtr....

Thundercrack83, glad to be of assistance

Freedo50, as i said this will be quite an advanced tutorial, anyway the walls i use can be found here [linkie] (http://kamurai.sakura.ne.jp/editbbs/data/SC4/1173081623782143/JPN_High-Wall.ZIP)

tbh i was hoping for more intellectual/technical replies but thankyou's are perfectly adequate  :D

anyway to business.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg520.imageshack.us%2Fimg520%2F7994%2Fraisedhwavenueinterchanlf1.jpg&hash=a8b1907a303c9e5c2ead4dbc5dcef54c8cba55f6)

this is the bog standard NAM interchange for avenue crossing elevated HW.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg520.imageshack.us%2Fimg520%2F8397%2Fraisedhwavenueinterchanji4.jpg&hash=f6ec034dd5e7a7b69f2f983f073ac9e5dfe65a5e)

unfortunately i have a problem with it. if this was a real interchange then each avenue median crossing would be used by two sets of traffic (red and blue). this would not happen in real life and thus a realistic approach is required.
my first attempt was a roundabout.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg520.imageshack.us%2Fimg520%2F4959%2Fraisedhwavenueinterchansc0.jpg&hash=3a7b0d20bf91e9028510032f425c6570ceec5a25)

i also wanted the avenue to have uninterrupted through access. i did this with two slip roads off the avenue that plunge into tunnels to emerge on the other side of the roundabout.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg159.imageshack.us%2Fimg159%2F1536%2Fraisedhwavenueinterchanql0.jpg&hash=c3bbcb0c62ff9a545c18f3d1479f38ad7c69909c)

only problem is plopping buddybuds underpass beta lots for OWR entrances reverses the direction as you can see on the avenue section with both pairs of arrows pointing south. you can reorientate the OWR post plop but that results in the model of the tunnel arpeture becoming obscured by the terrain texture. i came up with an interesting solution. although not perfect it looks the part and will still function the same.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg520.imageshack.us%2Fimg520%2F8519%2Fraisedhwavenueinterchanhi7.jpg&hash=228f6d2af8f20f31c4875fdfefcd1dae6aec76d2)

basically i bulldozed the avenue underpass and replaced it with two OWR. then drag roads off at diagonals in the same place the OWR were dragged off the avenue. thus the junction texture looks reasonable at these intersections. use road instead of OWR for the slip roads and the road underpasses. as you can see it looks better as nothing is pointing the wrong way.

the thing with this junction is however it allows sims to turn around in their cars. now if your sadistic like me and dont want that to happen then i have just the thing.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg516.imageshack.us%2Fimg516%2F8004%2F600pxinterchangeturbinenv0.jpg&hash=2a26a2f0ab57e12172a988d529133fec7ffe993e)

after many headaches and much bulldozing i have managed to recreate a turbine interchange that is fully functional. i may tutorial this piece soon.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg520.imageshack.us%2Fimg520%2F389%2Fraisedhwavenuespinnerdk0.jpg&hash=244f076aaaea7525ffd521cb40548124ba742503)

this i soon realised doesnt allow for right turns coming off the highway..... oh no... so with abit more squeezing...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg155.imageshack.us%2Fimg155%2F4018%2Fraisedhwavenuespinnerfuuv8.jpg&hash=8f3852def8926863c9e0ba9640f08ebec1a9547e)

anyway i think that the images speak for themselves....

todays eye candy

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg520.imageshack.us%2Fimg520%2F5370%2Frandomeyecandy2va1.jpg&hash=8eced472c6368543439ce7eb50bd711fcec79e89)

glenni thanks, i think

anyway this is not the scheduled update as i received my first request.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maj.com%2Fgallery%2FElburro%2FPC%2Fsimcity_4_2007-06-05_01-05-26-28.jpg&hash=e7b60bc0af64f64ac3eab45b908332dd8928f191)

El burro posted this unfinished interchange... i noticed a couple of things about it. its bigger than it needs to be, and there seems an awful lot of road, in fact there are not less than three ways of making a left turn eastbound to northbound.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg525.imageshack.us%2Fimg525%2F7174%2Felburro1fu3.jpg&hash=0c85da9fb3749a2d29168482fff0a2bd7af04d55)

in fact 5 if you use the purle piece of road to change from outer lane to main avenue, surely there is a simpler way.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg519.imageshack.us%2Fimg519%2F1210%2F8laneavenue1zz9.jpg&hash=c03b5f0342daf610db05899a456325cca99b0cab)

i knocked up this. its smaller, and has less redundant road. however there are some subtle differences.

el burro's junction the outer lanes split. they can either use an express lane to turn left or rejoin the main carriageway and turn right or carry straight on. this loads the roundabout with excess traffic as left turns from the avenue have to still use the main roundabout for at least 3 tiles.

in mine however. the outside carriageways have no option to join the main carriageway and pull off to form the express lanes. in fact there is a feeder exit from the main carriageway onto the express lane. this alieviates congestion on the roundabout and also on the main avenue carriageway as those turning left would not rejoin the main carriageway in a system of similiar junctions.

in el burros solution in an even distribution of directional traffic, 5/6 of traffic from any one avenue must use the roundabout to continue their journey. in my interchange. it is 4/6.

in a quest to to minimise this further... if hes expecting 24,000 commuters and 16,000 are using the roundabout..... its only OWR remember.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maj.com%2Fgallery%2FElburro%2FPC%2Fsimcity_4_2007-06-05_03-13-40-95.jpg&hash=976b77973c727692b4f1a77b8ec353ad876fbfbb)

this is El burro's second attempt.... and here is my analysis.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg238.imageshack.us%2Fimg238%2F3910%2Felburro2analysedaz3.jpg&hash=b18d8cb49eb75f3248b18d1ebfc08b8abcffd16f)

although hard to spot the black line depicts the roundabout in this interchange. first off this is not a junction between two 8 lane avenues, but i will overlook that point. secondly if you look at the red lines south to north. there are again three ways of going straight on. this however is less than five..... but arises mainly due to the lane swapping ability, note the green and blue lines south to north.

finally the pink and yellow lines depict the possible turns for each direction NS and EW. this time there are no express lanes for left hand turns. the large diagonal OWR are actually onramps for the roundabout as they are used for right and left turns. instead an uninterrupted through road is offered for the NS avenue carriageway. in this case the traffic using the roundabout NS is 4/6 but EW it is 6/6 being that the roundabout is formed directly from the carriageway of this road. these average to 5/6 of all traffic using the junction use the main roundabout.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg516.imageshack.us%2Fimg516%2F7448%2Felburro2recreatedfo5.jpg&hash=62c2b29bda4ac331fb2a30ad7c2e630836a019db)

well firstly here is El burro's second interchange recreated by me. its smaller, has less road routes, and functions identically to his. if you dont believe me you can check.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg516.imageshack.us%2Fimg516%2F3646%2Felburro2improvedox9.jpg&hash=a91a8893fe2fe307e35a5bb179f8585fb0e679c7)

now by making both 8 lane avenues and giving both through rouads you improve the efficiency again taking the fraction to 4/6 again. however this interchange is bulkier than the previous incarnation you can see the logical progression.

anyway i hope that helps. in either case i have alieviate traffic by on the main roundabout by 4,000 commuters and compacted the interchange.

thanks
MG

I see what you've done an I'm very impressed with your take on it, I could no doubt demolish both of them and try what you've done because you've not used up any more space than I have.

By the way... this thread is incredible, you have some pretty insane interchanges

replies...

Meldolion, thanks, im only trying to help.

well im not trying to make anyone look bad. you merely asked me to show you the flaws, so i did, El burro. im here to try and inspire peeps to use more realistic and varied interchanges in their cities. i dont put them in city environments to make it easy to see whats going on. thats your job.

Anyway considering todays surprise update upon request, today's official update will be a small one... tomorrow will be something abit special.

now for those of you who use custom sidewalk mod's, you will all know that the NAM 2x2 road roundabout will not conform.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg511.imageshack.us%2Fimg511%2F9286%2Fsmallofsetroadxnamxi4.jpg&hash=11eb7694ba6b0d638408076639d7e19d0baf0d63)

as it has its own base texture, it ignores all normal sidewalks to display a maxis plaza texture. unfortunately its the most effective junction for the shape it occupies. but if your mean like most borough councils and need to restrict access and have greater traffic control what are you to do. with this roundabout they can go whatever way they like, disgraceful....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg511.imageshack.us%2Fcontent.php%3Fpage%3Ddone%26amp%3Bl%3Dimg511%2F6554%2Fsmallofsetroadxmaxishr3.jpg&hash=8ed1f52ccd17fdd6b6e86edb056cad3d37624464)

if the sidewalk texture really bugs you then im afraid that this is the only full access alternative. well this and the same thing rotated. unfortunately this isnt really that realistic, although im sure it can be found in places.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg125.imageshack.us%2Fcontent.php%3Fpage%3Ddone%26amp%3Bl%3Dimg125%2F926%2Fsmallofsetroadxrestrictuv5.jpg&hash=def24943a929702a8210ff351e23faf5db949fed)

one method of restricting access especially in urban areas is to change one road to a OWR. but do it in such a way that another of the roads is restricted by joining the OWR instead of the other two roads. this can be demonstrated here by the road coming from the north. it is forced into a left turn by the OWR, whereas the south and west roads can interchange without impediment.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg125.imageshack.us%2Fimg125%2F3539%2Fsmallofsetroadxrestrictxq0.jpg&hash=13e045d1f327900380de2032cadb123453d96a7a)

this has to be one of my favourite small interchanges. its so simple, to make it just draw the four roads into the square of the rondabout but dont connect any of the ends. then plop a single 2x2 avenue tile on top. as for the restrictions, the east and west roads can only turn onto the main carriageway forcing a left turn. the north and south carriageways can either turn left or carry straight on. this junction prevents all right turns. i have used this beauty in several places in my cities. as it looks good and is quite useful when used in conjunction with a OW network.

my second topic for today is a neat little trick that may be cool and look flash but is horrendously unrealistic.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg501.imageshack.us%2Fimg501%2F7243%2Favenuecornerinnertrc4.jpg&hash=cfd934c7ca21cd4949fd78d232c06c369844b9e8)

on the left is an avenue corner with an inner corner T junction. not only would this be a traffic light nightmare, the road markings would be extremely complex, to ensure people didnt cut the corner. unfortunately these road markings are missing in the piece. on the right is a mor realistic alternative. it limits access to one avenue carraigeway so i would recommend an avenue roundabout in the vicinity to allow U-turns. this kind of interchange is normally found on straight dual carraigeways with limited access, putting it on a bend is not too far fetched. plus in my mind it looks better too.

finally a little head to head..... Marrast vs NAM in an underpass faceoff.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg516.imageshack.us%2Fimg516%2F1068%2Fmarrastavenueunderroad3oy0.jpg&hash=febe3e8593096dea8d96db1d9b71f948692a0fef)

firstly NAM, lengthwise it is far shorter than marrast but it is two tiles wider. it has an open underpass using bridges for the roadway.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg55.imageshack.us%2Fcontent.php%3Fpage%3Ddone%26amp%3Bl%3Dimg55%2F1871%2Fmarrastavenueunderroadma8.jpg&hash=74c39402508419a664764a7bda5c3359b9c676a0)

secondly Marrast, this is only 4 tiles wide and has a closed tunnel underpass. it is however a whopping 31 tiles long. but then again most inner urban underpasses on high capacity dual carraigeways(avenues) have quite long ramps.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg503.imageshack.us%2Fcontent.php%3Fpage%3Ddone%26amp%3Bl%3Dimg503%2F8421%2Fmarrastavenueunderroad2tb3.jpg&hash=855bc2e5a2541488b0d424347ce438c1aef331eb)

tbh i dont think there is much of a winner. i think that the NAM underpass is better for rural areas where space is not an issue and marrast can pull it together in downtowns. although if you are planning on making a marrast underpass i would do it first. as some quite drastic terraforming is required to get the tunnel to dig.

anyway until tomorrow....

Hi mightygoose

I saw your thread. I have no time at the moment to prepare something interesting for you, but I will do it with pleasure.

I have an idea, wchich maybe can be interesting:
First, to formulate the problem. For example: Intersection of 3 avenues/RHW - T or Y shape, without collisions. Simple, gentle slopes, limited space in central area (exits can be long). Sorry for poor English.
Second, to show possible solutions.

I think it would be useful for many people.

this beast is about 30minutes up the road from me and here for you to explore via aerial photographs....
[linkie] (http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=51.29688~0.500672&style=a&lvl=15&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&encType=1)

it is special in the fact it is essentially a multi lane HW for over 1km. it has two OWR that straddle the main carriageway as feeder lanes for the three separate major junctions that form the designated junction 6.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg530.imageshack.us%2Fimg530%2F3450%2Fm20junction63ll1.jpg&hash=36502a62404e2542fc1395cad6b128876ee2e26c)

coming from the northeast you come to what was the original junction 6. this is a standard overpass roundabout with a northern exit to an industrial estate, depicted by the streets and a southern exit to a nearby roundabout joining two major roads.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg530.imageshack.us%2Fimg530%2F8526%2Fm20junction64jf5.jpg&hash=58ea1b91d957aa4077d828c080a845bb83df62ce)

this is the south side of the western end to the interchange. the main road running north south is the A229. this is a connecting artery that runs from gillingham to maidstone. it also serves as a connector between the two major motorways in kent. the M20 and the M2. also coming off this roundabout is a main road running east to west also. you can see it bridging the main carriageway. and the other side runs parallel to the southbound A229.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg530.imageshack.us%2Fimg530%2F3849%2Fm20junction65xh9.jpg&hash=69a15c3e7ab4b7041a6fce68ef050a92a2e0dc7e)

this is the northern part of the wester end. notice the OWR pulling onto the A229 southbound offramp. this comes from a garden centre, the offramp for the garden centre is further north. i have shown you these two sections separately as they are in fact two separate junction types that merely overlap. if you dont believe me...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg78.imageshack.us%2Fcontent.php%3Fpage%3Ddone%26amp%3Bl%3Dimg78%2F5233%2Fm20junction612qu0.jpg&hash=06af7b66eafa185e8b26b7792ae44c7e41ea926e)

note the trumpet in red and the underpass roundabout in yellow. they overlap so each part's roundabout is overlapping the slip roads for the other.

i think it helps to show you some examples of use for this western end as it does look quite confusing.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg530.imageshack.us%2Fimg530%2F4802%2Fm20junction610bl9.jpg&hash=3ef5e3f42fa009b5886b50a666cbc3f257ba8755)

heading eastbound making a right turn onto the A229 southbound. firstly you pass the original junction 6 and remain on the main carriageway before pulling onto the feeder road. you remain on the feeder road for 1km approx. then you bear left onto the offramp up to the northern roundabout. follow this round to the third exit. this road leads under the M20 parallel and adjacent to the A229. enter the next roundabout and take the second exit to put you on the carriageway.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg530.imageshack.us%2Fimg530%2F2825%2Fm20junction611ak4.jpg&hash=55dd4b5863f1b8d652230ea3323f3b78df848ca9)

heading westbound making a right turn onto the A229 northbound. firstly enter the feeder road just past the sweeping left hander of the main carraigeway. take the first exit and follow the corner round to the south roundabout. its a 35km/h limit on that corner. take the express lane onto the road adjacent to the northbound carraigeway of the A229. take the first exit at the northern roundabout.

i hope you enjoyed that little explanantion... i'll leave you with some close ups of this interchange.... enjoy...

You do realise, of course, with every twist and turn you increase commute time?

It is a good practice to restrict the number of images per post to 4 or 5 if you do stuff like this. Makes the page render faster.

callagfrx, yes but with speed boosts from the NAM realism can be acheived while maintaining useability. however this is a recreation not a design for practicality.... if thats all you have in mind why are your cities anything other than boring regular grids.

colyn. some city journals have as many as 30 photos in one update. i didn't think there were any rules ofr number of pics per post.

and both. thanks for the comments :)

30 minutes? what are you on, a scooter?  Ashford to Maidstone is 15 minutes, tops.  :D :D :D :D

well junction 10 is undergoing widening... so is a nightmare and the town centre ring road is being converted to two way so junction 9 takes 10 minutes to get too.... so its 15mins before you get out of ashford.....

There is no rule about that but as I said ... good practice ... try it yourself.

I know about the MD's with 100's of images per post ... I rareley view them because 80% of the images do not render for me so it is waste om my time.

If you look in my Shosaloza thread you will see that I try and limit the images to 5 per post simply to make the pages render better for those on slow connections.

Very interesting work here mightygoose.  I will be coming back to see how you get on.  I'm especially interested in the RL angle.  I did a small amount of work on the M20 J10a scheme that is in the pipeline so the area holds some interest.

This is a little beyond the scope of what you are doing, but I have always had a pet dislike of the game highway interchanges in that the slip roads are always far too short.  Does anyone else feel this way, and can anything be done about it?

I also have a 'where did you get that' request and I hope you don't mind.  On update 1 on the first page, the eighth picture (immediately after "finally a couple of eyecandy shots") has some underpasses taking the road under an avenue and the road under another road.  What are these?  Are they functional underpasses?

Thanks for your help and well done on an interesting project.

Great work on those interchanges! They totally blew my mind!
I guess not everything you have shown us can be done with the newest NAM, so are you going to release content for such realistic interchanges in the near future?

oh, and I am sure ppl have asked you before, but where did you get those concrete/grass walls?

take care,

Update 6
[/b]

ok new update sorry for delay exams are over and this is the first update of the summer.

Exile the walls are linked on the first page i believe, as for me i have some content in mind...

Patfirefightr here it is....

well firstly a little further exploration of the new NAM.

here is the full compliment of avenue road endings...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Favenueroadends.jpg&hash=09f6c1d81d59dac9f19969321e220643708028a9)

as you can see they have ahd an overhaul since the last NAM, the diagonal endings are new and the straight ending is replacing the maxis one. the perpendicular ending is also different to maxis.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Favenueendpicemissing.jpg&hash=1bd25df1315cd651d7ebc1fc9d068e99e2d5de91)

however the the diagonal road to avenue straight pieces only exist for the obtuse angle corner.

my next point is the missing junctions from an avenue roundabout...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fnewavenueroundaboutimpossibles.jpg&hash=0966aed99328781a19e0dde2b58c55ac0d847de8)

ignoring the traffic light junction of the avenue. the road street and OWR single and double connections to a curved avenue have not been pathed for the avenue roundabout. its a shame as the texture already exist. just new overides required...

finally on the subject of tinkering..

when an OWR makes a right or left hand turn and a road continues of the corner in a diagonal fashion a new texture piece appears.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2FroadoddityOWRcorner.jpg&hash=f4b5c7df216ab755d9789422bbe0405036fbea84)

this override i believe is this NAM and was not in previous iterations....

now onto todays big bit...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2F2avenue23road.jpg&hash=7bbfc177d38f4a6cdc18072241bdc3acd92becaa)

this junction functions perfectly well... however it has fallen victim to the annoying glitch which prevents two OWR being drawn out the end of a diagonal avenue. however it still looks functional just looks like a turning lane for the onramp prior to the separation.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2F2avenue23roadanalysed.jpg&hash=25e2168b6723cb8f9130cf1a2e22567507023470)

the kep paths are shown here... notice how the turning lane cuts some traffic out of the roundabout system. this will improve traffic flow.

but i was not happy.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2F2avenue23roadimproved.jpg&hash=47292969f3613ad60d833eaded3e7f77edada313)

first this. this had a better merge lane for the onramp prior to the downsize on the NW/SE avenue however featured a smaller roundabout....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2F2avenue23roadaternative.jpg&hash=0611a4e2c26bd44f0777c25b6d9256d517fc8ee9)

in the end i had to resort to avenues as, as of yet, other transit types have no pathed interchanges with the avenue roundabout.

until next time thanks

Perhaps it's not precisely your field, but I've been looking for someone who might be able to make a highway/avenue junction I've been seeing around San Diego (I've spotted about six of these, each with slight variations)....

The common factor is that it's the beginning (or end, looking in the other direction) of an avenue, with a highway running at a 45 degree angle to it, and then the two combine into a highway going the other way. Sometimes the highway is straight, sometimes it is the one that curves. But the avenue does not have ramps to allow direction reversal.

(It's sort of a half-T interchange, but with the dying side of the T diagonal instead of squared off to the other two, if you get my drift. Sometimes the avenue is the dying side of the T and sometimes it's not.)

The best examples (if you want to punch up San Diego on GoogleEarth or something like that) would be the junction of Pacific Highway with I-5 just east of San Diego International Airport, or I-8 at either Fletcher Parkway (in La Mesa) or El Cajon Boulevard (in El Cajon).

i know exactly what you mean... the avenue access is restricted to one direction in each lane.

Hello everyone. I'm new to all SC4 communities. I havn't played SC4 for about a year or more. But with all the great tools everyone has made on this and many other sites, its like playing a brand new game. I love RHW and can't wait for the MIS. I thought I would take a moment and say hi as well as show you my first RHW system in my new city. Any comment/suggestions welcome. Thanks

These elaborate interchanges are all well and good and serve as beautiful eye candy.... i'm just wondering is it possible at all to take an elevated off-ramp and fly it over a elevated highway to another elevated highway or ground highway... it must be near impossible because no one has attempted ( I would if i could grasp how) it yet and it seems like it should be the next likely approach.  The closest thing I have seen to this is the ground elevated stack interchange.... is it possible to to use those flyovers in different settings ...or are they limited to the stack interchange... any response would be appreciated

@sneekypetepuma: just so you know some pictures of what you are requesting would help in getting a proper answer. and fyi if you had read through the NAM threads especially the RHW thread you would know that there is work being done and developed which is the MIS (modular interchange system). Next time perhaps you should spend some time looking at the developing threads than making bold and rash comments just like you had made. Thank you.

perhaps you also did not put it in a proper thread if you had opened a thread here: http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=91.0 asking if it was possible to make that type of interchange then most likely your question would have been answered failure to do so led to your question not being answered. and yes it did take 2 minutes to reply back because that type of response will never get you any replies nor answers here. good luck finding an answer to your question. now we hand it back to you mightygoose and nice findings so far!

You know what ... Filasimo..... my initial question regarding a "flyover ramp over a elevated highway" in a thread called "A Compendium of Interchanges" doesn't seem that far fetched to me... I would think that anyone of mightygoose or your intelligence could .. ya know, visualize something so common as that... but  don't let me be the one to deny you a pic...  If you click on the pic.. there is a long ramp that "flies' over the elevated freeway .... All I wanted to know if it was possible to make that... seeing how I haven't ever run across one before.... but now that you've turned this into "just another newbie in the wrong thread asking the wrong questions at the wrong time", I'm sure the response I get will have nothing to do with the question that I asked. but I digress... I did move this question somewhere else... and before I forget.....  I apologize to Filasimo if I insulted you... and to Mightygoose if I have put my question where it does not go...

Now, now boys play nice.  This is a "Show us your thread..." not a lets get down and dirty thread.  Sneekypetepuma (Chocolate City from ST) if you expected an answer it would have been better to post it in a more frequented thread by those who have the answers.

Your answer is it is not as simple as you may think it is to make a "fly over ramp".  Modding wise in game that is considered an "Interchange".  If you have noticed in the almost 5 years of SC there have been a very limited number of interchanges made, the reason for this is for the amount of work that goes into them.  It is not just a simple model it, render it plop it ingame.  The modding for these things is quite complex and it takes months of 3 to 4 people with different expertise to get one interchange created, hence the reason so many have been started and abandoned.

There are very few people that have the expertise to answer your question and I guarentee you that most of those members do not frequent this thread at all.  The chances of you getting an answer in this thread alone were slim to none and your comment was out of place.  Please, next time learn some patience and instead of getting mad look for a more appropriate place to post your questions.  This is a thread that MG has made to showcase different possibilities he has found with the existing game and MODs, he has done a great job, now please can we stay on topic?

I think the main reason of this situation is misunderstanding, and it can be easy improved. It happened to me a few times to ask about something, even in the right but not often visited place. When I didn't receive an answer, I was looking for a more popular place, made a link for my question and everythig was OK :)

sneekypetepuma, if you were concerned about getting a reply, I personally would have searched around for another appropriate place to re-ask your question (politely) after a few days, just as Ennedi suggested.  You could have gotten an answer much sooner.

Now, to answer your question, if you've been following the RHW project and its Modular Interchange System (MIS), in the works, will include flyover ramps when it is released (there's no set release date--we NAMites like to surprise people ;)).  See the RHW thread (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=990.msg29620#msg29620) for more details.

Back on-topic--MG, this is some really nice stuff here interchange-wise, fine roadgeekery.  Looking forward to seeing more of your innovative solutions, when you get around to it. :)

Alright.  Its time I showed some of my best here.

I'm new at posting images here, so they might not all show up or something.

Here it goes.  They are 1440x900 images.  I am not sure how to resize them.  If I can figure this out, I will resize them to a 1024px width.

QuoteYou can post any dimension image and video files. However the files must be hosted off site. Direct file upload to this site is severely restricted. Also a maximum width of 1024 pixels is highly recommended ( but not mandatory) to keep a balanced monitor view in most of the members' computers.

Update 7a
[/size][/b]

To all thanks, plus any peeps having trouble with a junction and traffic in their cities feel free to shout... Give me a pic and a tell me what the traffic is doing.... I'll see what I can do.

Tarkus, I cannot wait to play with the MIS just to see what I can do with it, if you include some subway transitions I think i will actually feint. Maybe also an elevated flyover, I remember it being possible as I once saw elevated rail over elevated rail... maybe jplumbey can tell us more about this.

Haljackey, your interchange shots are always appreciated. Maybe you could try and produce some new ones....

Onward, no sc4 shots today....

I thought I would talk to you abit more about interchanges in general in RL.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tfhrc.gov%2Fpubrds%2F06jan%2Fimages%2Fwein10.jpg&hash=d2f5850a4b40894eac1f33c232ba96a7ddc6cc67)

This gem is the Helicoil interchange design, In the original 1960s design for an elevated I-10 Papago Freeway, the Arizona Highway Department proposed a new interchange design called a "helicoil" that would require traffic to take a 270-degree loop to the ground. The elevated freeway and helicoil interchanges were abandoned in favor of construction below ground with a deck carrying the Margaret T. Hance Park linking the communities on either side of the highway. I think it is a real shame this interchange design was neglected, it has to be one of the most compact designs I have ever seen. It basically takes a turbine and compresses it until the four arcs are part of the same helix. The only downside is the extra 180 degrees of turn on each arc.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fspring.jpg&hash=a38e79463e92fbd7cc22caf0007a72acbae14986)

This is probably the large interchange I will recreate in 7b, it is the springfield interchange, or the mixing bowl as it is known, that picture is how the junction stood in 1964 after construction. Since then it has become unrecogniseable. (*As a side note this blog has an interesting article about heat mapping for various things on Google maps [linkie] (http://blog.fortiusone.com/2006/10/11/heat-maps-for-google-maps-aka-geoiq-mashup/)*)
In the 1970's however over 150 000 commuters were using the interchange daily, three times its designed capacity so major improvements were made.....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.randomwalks.com%2Fimgs%2Fblog%2Fmixingbowl.jpg&hash=72a9de47c200611ebda9981fa3f2d9fd7a9434d9)

Unfortunately I can't find a better picture but you get the idea, this is when it gained its name the mixing bowl. But still traffic increased, nearly tripling again by the early nineties to 430 000 users. So in 1997 a new project was set about lasting 10 years to rebuild, restructure and improve the interchange. I cant seem to find any decent overview shots for now but I will try to find some for the second half, thats all for now folks, see you in a day or two...

Thanks

Maybe also an elevated flyover, I remember it being possible as I once saw elevated rail over elevated rail... maybe jplumbey can tell us more about this.

Wrrior and I have been doing some experimenting in regards to underground highways  ::).  Obviously, since we havent been public with it there is much testing still needed (experimental).  It seems as though we are able to add a 2nd path type to the subway system, with a different speed than the normal subway paths.  We can make it the same speed as highway speed and make it so that the road and subway traffic are held separate from each other and prevent Subway Traffic from using Boston Big Dig Lots and Road Traffic from leaving through a subway station.

There has been one issue that has arisen from testing so far.  The Traffic cant determine whether it is below or above ground, meaning if the Road Traffic travelling on the subway is running underneath a Road Network, it can jump from underground to above ground and then continue travelling on the Road Surface and take a "shortcut".  It may be able to avoid this by turning the Road Traffic into Highway speed Rail or Monorail traffic instead.  I would choose Monorail Traffic because Monorail is above surface level and may prevent the "jumping" from occuring, but if your subway goes under a Monorail Station you may encounter a jump.  Im not entirely sure.

With a little bit more developement Warrior and I may have an ALPHA ready, but that wont be until after Christmas Holidays, too much other stuff to work on first.

As for Fly-overs... if you want two separate ramps in the same tile flying over the main throughfare you will require puzzle pieces or full blown interchanges.  It is possible to have "elevated" ramps made draggable, in fact eventually I intend to get the NAM Elevated Road Series made draggable, eventually.  El-MIS would be very similar.

mightygoose, excellent update here, with some really interesting background info.  That helicoil interchange is very, very cool, and I'm also a bit saddened it hasn't caught on.

As far as flyovers go, if you're wondering about single-ramp flyovers, they are definitely going to be possible--that test interchange I showed had one, with an El-MIS going over an RHW-4.  It'll be possible to go under or over, or have an El-MIS going over an MIS, too eventually.

I, too, can't wait to see what you're able to create with the MIS.  I'm thinking I may need to look into making these helicoils possible after seeing this update. :D

Title: Re: A Compendium of Interchanges....

Those two pictures from Ardecila are possiblilities if the Models still exist.  Dual-Networking ran into trouble with intersections of a 3rd Traffic type.  MAXIS made it possible for two traffic types to work simultaneously in the same tile so you could have Rail Crossings over Roads.  But they never implemented it to be possible for 3 different Traffic Types, meaning it will return an invalid path when there are 3 different path types (Pedestrians are a special case, Frieght and Busses follow the Road paths set for Cars making it one Traffic Type).  So, due to the limitation of only EL-Rail/Road Dual Network pieces with no intersections with Rail or Monorail developement stalled and the puzzle pieces were never finished.  If the models still exist, it is possible to implement them, but everyone must remember the limitation.

As for the Trumpet Interchange... It is possible, but the one Ardecila is not.  The maximum size of an interchange is 16x16 tiles Ardecila's is 17x17 tiles, just too big.  Now, the problem with this is it is ALOT of work to implement an interchange.  People have tried but have not had the support they needed.  You need someone who is an expert in LODs, because a 16x16 tile model must be broken down into 1x1 tile SC4 Models, there are no ifs, ands or buts.  So, potentially you could have 256 SC4 Models you are working with, realistically anywhere upto 80 or more tiles depending on the interchange and the complexity of it.  With Ardecila I count about 113 tiles in which the model sits, meaning 113 different S3D Models.  Then, you need someone who can RUL the Interchange together, this is not an entirely difficult task, just time consuming and you must know what you are doing, essentially Interchanges are like Bridges.  Possible, you just need the right people with the right talents to get it done.  Approximately 3 people are required, Modeller, LOD Expert and RULer.  If anyone is willing to do the Modeller and LOD Expert portions of the project I am willing to be the RULer and learn the required steps, but you have to understand it takes time.

Its because he is copying the location from simtropolis... and you need to be both logged in and have seen the image recently (ie have it in your cache) to view it...

the way i did it is quote the message and extract the image locations out of it and go directly to them...

hope this helps

@Haljackey... If you made those models and have them in GMAX you could always break them up into 1x1 tile (16x16m square) LODs and make S3Ds for them.  If you do, then it is possible to get them in game.  The modding part I can do, eventually, you just need to supply the ingame S3Ds.

Note: S3Ds are different from the SC4Models.  I dont know how to make them from Model to S3D, but the Redlotus' Tutorial tells you.

I recognize that second one that Haljackey posted--it was made by scipio [link] (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=124&threadid=64338&enterthread=y&STARTPAGE=1#578410).

As far as that model of mine had which mightygoose posted, that brings back a lot of memories of when I first started :D.  There were a couple of reasons I abandoned it.   1) I wasn't happy with the model, and figured it would be better to start from scratch, and 2) because I figured there would be a lot more possibilities if, instead of making a standard plop interchange, I went for a modular setup.  That's how the MIS came into being.  ;)

(that seems to be the only picture I still have left)

I was thinking about trying to take a short cut with the thing by rendering it normally, then creating a 'blank' interchange with the correct paths and adding the model as an overhanging prop on the central square using T21 examplers.

As you can gather, I never did actually get around to trying it out and there's probably lots of reasons why it wouldn't have worked, but it does cut out all the tedious parts involving true 3D models.

Actually, that would've worked in that respect. (interchanges/puzzle pieces can have T21s on them)

However, it would've brought up issues with textures, because they would need to be corrected through the BAT (or editing in Photoshop).

You remember this one as well?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg25.imageshack.us%2Fimg25%2F8319%2Fave-kruizing1.jpg&hash=d778ee04b85f1ea545e181f1314e544f6a4c644b)

This would be really useful in-game, although turning it into a T-Bone interchange improves its connectivity for those silly drivers in SC4.

that last junction halackey has been requested previously twice in this thread i do believe... i love tinkering around with restricted access on my networks. allows much greater control over traffic flow and with that where your downtown grows....

Just finished reading this thread from start to finish for the first time and it is wonderful!  I know nothing about how you guys build/bat/mod/tweak the game and the wizardry you use....however, the ideas I pick-up by reading this stuff are wonderful for my game...after I get rid of the head-ache of course.. :P .. thanks for this thread Mightygoose

Update 8

well here we are a new year and some new toys. ths MIS is out in its first beta and there are some new toys in the NAM as well. today i wont go into the new MIS stuff, as firstly there isnt that much to be done with the first beta bar the obvious and secondly because i havent even come close to finishing with the normal highways, avenues and roads. but first some replies.

jplumbey, thanks for your informative response, i will take note and investigate further.

adept2rock, thanks

Pat, thanks, i also hope that some do make it into sc4.

star.torturer, thanks for the heads up on those links....

Hal jackey, thanks twice, its these images we are turning up that make this thread worth while.

old rogue, many thanks, good luck with your efforts

jack bauer, hi and welcome to SC4D, ardecila is working on heavy elevated rail currently as for a release date i do not know

Nerdly_dood, you are probably right but that time is along way off as there is still much to be done with teh RHWMIS...

anyway trawling on...

first off ill show you one of my favourite parts in the new NAM update....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2FHWYXAVE-roundabout1.jpg&hash=4502e044f7e0fabf549e277abf3a9c8d82521bb0)

Here be the new Avenue roundabout.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2FHWYXAVE-roundabout2.jpg&hash=6a25e346c8f38cb12f528747cda9f4bcfb555064)

It is the infinitely better replacement for this old thing....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2FHWYXAVE-roundabout5.jpg&hash=8ee9e1bc2c28c5402b4fbc96fc6326fc72f23274)

ok technically this takes up less space and is much quicker to make but there are a couple of reasons for using the roundabout instead. first off the old plopachange allowed for no right turns, which to be fair unless you planned it that way will interfere with one of your commutes, be it morning or evening. as everyone who turned left for work has to go home a different way...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2FHWYXAVE-roundabout2.jpg&hash=6a25e346c8f38cb12f528747cda9f4bcfb555064)

look again. not only does it allow for an EHWY to pass over it, it allows OWR to connect to it. this adds a whole load of oppurtunities for experimenting. not only that it allows for much greater realism....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2FHWYXAVE-roundabout4.jpg&hash=f383a4e355c07a437d3a8359c6d8d80d5466e1d6)

this motorway junction is no more than 2 miles from where i sit right now.... and if you compare....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2FHWYXAVE-roundabout3.jpg&hash=b408757e08ec1b73b07e89eb093383a26af71ba1)

see this puzzle piece on the AVE interchange TAB loop has taken us a large step towards more realistic junctions, and for that reason it is my friend.

now moving on the other main addition in the NAM jan 2008 update is the reskinning of elevated heavy rail pieces. well i know its not really on topic for this thread but i wanted to show them off so i made a small area containing an interchange and plenty of other NAM tricks.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fonslopespecial1.jpg&hash=d40def5bc078c96739ffc69ab1d4f4052d529dbd)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fonslopespecial2.jpg&hash=2ff5ebeddfb0802c573dcd13bd34e4d645b400d9)

looking in abit closer....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fonslopespecial3.jpg&hash=747573b5721364acde0009e567188c445f7e4a7e)

the main junction from the two roads(join to form an avenue further down) to HWY is actually an inverted Maxis T.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fonslopespecial4.jpg&hash=1553af4fc1b2fd2dbd6d168b6ebaff6bffee18d6)

i love how you can combine the various rail bits now to make a really interesting and varied network...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fonslopespecial5.jpg&hash=a1cc13c073ca951b576f342641fd7699b748dc97)

this ramp on the left of the HWY was actually in the june 2007 NAM but i hardly ever see it used. its most useful in situations like this with a slope on one side of a HWY.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fonslopespecial6.jpg&hash=effe1b344a1edb622b5eb915baabc42f7d8726a1)

and finally a little something I am working on to allow for 2 tile wide sunken highways... very early stages...

anyway next update will be a MIS breakdown guide telling you exactly whats in the box and how to use it....

thanks all....

EDIT, i apologies for the left had edge of the first six photos.... damn paint...

Well I haven't posted here in quite some time, but I have a new Compendium of Interchanges to show!

In addition, I also figured out how to properly post my images.  They will appear compressed at 800x500 in this thread, but simply click on the image to view them in their full resolution of 1440x900!  The new format also dramatically decreases the size of the photos as well, which used to be 1MB+!  :o

Let's begin with this one:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg207.imageshack.us%2Fimg207%2F6451%2Fdowntownjun281121187812am0.jpg&hash=7599f0b1efca8d0682c1f5d3bbb53d63fcf794cc) (http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/6451/downtownjun281121187812am0.jpg)

I posted this image back on page 3, before the MIS ever existed.  It was very tough for me to make this kind of connection due to the use of the Multi-RHW concept.  Now, thanks to the overrides established with the RHW starter pieces, there is no longer a need for such a concept, making this obsolete.

Here is the same junction, now reconstructed using the new RHW as well as some use of the MIS:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Faycu30.webshots.com%2Fimage%2F44989%2F2003234867595219042_rs.jpg&hash=bf565c8ff22bc398af79c091883647918b4cc8ff) (http://aycu30.webshots.com/image/44989/2003234867595219042_rs.jpg)

If you also look closely, you can also see the speed sign increase from 90km/h in the first photo to 100km/h in the second, due the added safety features the RHW and MIS provided.

What else do I have to show?  Oh, how about this one!

Here is a RHW narrowing itself down from four to two lanes before a raised bridge:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg223.imageshack.us%2Fimg223%2F2861%2Fterransettlementmar9001xb9.jpg&hash=f2055b7fa48bbab61f40cd106f076dd42859b6dd) (http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/2861/terransettlementmar9001xb9.jpg)

Here it is with the new RHW-4 to RHW-2 connection and the lane shift puzzle pieces:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg520.imageshack.us%2Fimg520%2F1136%2Fterransettlementjul4001di7.jpg&hash=bec27b62b96672c378164ef61eea126710d9fd9c) (http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/1136/terransettlementjul4001di7.jpg)

Eventually, I added an interchange near the riverfront, so I decided to beef up the highway.  I used the new raised avenue bridge in latest NAM as well as using the accel/decel lanes provided with the RHW MIS.  Now vehicles can safely merge onto the highway unlike the tiny ramps that the ground/elevated highways use.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg222.imageshack.us%2Fimg222%2F7638%2Fterransettlementdec3021fx0.jpg&hash=2eb5484d3244c520245adecaa4a57534e0eca815) (http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/7638/terransettlementdec3021fx0.jpg)

For those who are wondering, here is the rest of the interchange.  It is a B-2 class parclo interchange, and was made this way because it is located near the river.  I also used several puzzle pieces included with the RHW and MIS to construct the ramps and junctions:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg246.imageshack.us%2Fimg246%2F743%2Fterransettlementdec3021vi3.jpg&hash=6c088669a53d0f4ccfe7f36ec8cdc138963130cb) (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/743/terransettlementdec3021vi3.jpg)

Here is the highway south of the interchange.  Later on, the highway expands itself yet again to a RHW-8, so it can properly fit with my existing Multi-RHW network in a city to the south.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg143.imageshack.us%2Fimg143%2F4834%2Fterransettlementdec3021oh4.jpg&hash=19b114e66157ffb450e801356a15f7cecddfe8f3) (http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/4834/terransettlementdec3021oh4.jpg)

Anyways, I hoped you enjoyed them!

Best,
-Haljackey

some great work their haljackey....

in response to dragonshardz PM about the missing photos from update 7B here are the remaining pictures.

i think it is a great way to look at where we were previously to inspire our future efforts....

so without further ado.... even though we have had update 8 lol....

Update 7c

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fspuiprev1.jpg&hash=f1be1a4212facd093b9144f42e066b7dff995c56)

this belonged to ardecila. nicely modelled but a traffic nightmare realistically, too much crossed traffic paths.......

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fstackpreview3.jpg&hash=9988c4c98be20775aa8b5ff4b6eed5257ca386f6)

this variation on a stack is also by ardecila before the NAM stack was modelled. althugh the layer format of the NAM stack is more conventional i do like the cross top stack design, also the NAM stack is far from perfect with its texturing and support struts....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Ftaimaruko-200507020905.gif&hash=b2625f3f4475108ef1f5dee465ae21651878d09f)

the holy grail for me.... there were experiments with elevated over elevated networks.... now this guy made only one post on simtrop saying he had made puzzle pieces for 30m height EHW, slope from EHW^15m and an EHW^30 over EHW^15.... other stuff by smoncrie supports this work....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fbridgealpha7rz.jpg&hash=992b4e76084f974689a019214d7afab1f2fd8367)

2004 design.....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2FEl-Hw.jpg&hash=38dd99ca29d0bf2e4a7e95eb944066f3b0953d25)

2005 design.....

and the last design made in 2006.... all working.... i know haljackey would flip his lid to get hold of these, as would I.

next up.... GLR(well rail, GLR wasn't invented yet) in road....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fromenn2.jpg&hash=5b10c00fbe0951a7e7d4f77b2bbb1ef14a6df7d9)

cum up with in 2004, and disappeared back into obscurity.... anyway those were the ones missing from the previous page.. although the smoncrie evidence on ELR over ELR i only found today...

anyway i got started so i thought i would do the whole lot....

continuing to dig through the ST archives.....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg3.imageshack.us%2Fimg3%2F7703%2FUSARoad1JPEG.jpg&hash=731257d8c347c73a6c037fe34bdf979e620da898)

these two were the original US and EU textures that were invision for the ANT.... turning lane road anyone?? i know they are quite common in the UK.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2FparkinglotunderEl.jpg&hash=f4fcd54affc61957c9cf71a7b203ee5e2fbe05a9)

2005 goaskin was beating mIncrobal to the punch with t21 exemplars for props under EL rail lol.....

2005 also, an alternative to GLR(rail again) in road, this time in streetcar formation.... these were only textures however....

this one popped up in mid 05 and got asked after for about 18 months every 3 pages or so.... current status is unknown....

haljackey posted this one in 2006, not sure if its a mock up or a photoshop job, either way could be extremely useful now if the highway was replaced with say RHW-6 or even RHW-8????

the single lane road idea we have going on over here was first invisioned as a potential use for the ANT instead of the RHW/dirt road idea...

finally..... back in early 2005.... thalassicus came up with a new set of models for the EL rail viaduct....

the models are better than the ones we have at the minute, even if the textures are slightly lacking....

to round off on my travels through over 240 pages of NAM threads on ST i came across two rather interesting posts....

firstly.... DEDGREN, our famous and dear friend's FIRST EVER POST in the simcity community.... i thought i'd share it for nostalgic purposes.... it seems he viewed the NAM much as we view 3RR, if not for tropod, the seven trumptes and crew... 3RR may have not existed...

This is my first post on a Simtropolis forum, so if it's all screwed up, don't laugh too hard at the newbie.

I'm 51, an attorney and an urban planner (MURP, Virginia Commonwealth University 1988). I have been addicted to Sim City since the original program, which I had on a 128K Mac.

When SC4 was released, I was originally reluctant to shift over from the huge investment of time I'd put into 3000 building what I thought were pretty incredible cities. I bought it, but didn't spend near the time with it as with the previous version.

The Rush Hour Expansion changed all that. I've always thought the most fascinating aspect of SC was the transportation networks, and in particular the roads and highways. I found myself spending hours creating huge cities (through every cheat I could find) just to play around with fine-tuning trips and commutes. I found myself ultimately frustrated, though, by the lack of choices Maxis provided with respect to modeling realistic intersections, interchanges and the like. I found my interest in SC4 was lessening as I simply couldn't seem to do anything I hadn't already done.

Then I discovered this modd. Stumbled across it is more accurate.

You folks (the ones doing the scut-work on this stuff) are Gods. I have, since installing the modd, played SC4 almost compulsively ever since. I'll tell you how bad it is- I'm doing it on a laptop as I drive the 45 minute commute to work. Your work has the potential to really take SC to the next level generally. I know it already has for me.

I'm going to print out and read this whole thread before I post any of my specific thoughts about the modd, and about any suggestions I would have, as I don't want to take up Simtropolis' bandwidth duplicating what has been said by others. As the Governator of California once said, though, I'll be back.

Thanks again.

D. Edgren

and lastly, you know every now and again there are those articles about famous men predicting things in their area of expertise that turn out to be totally rubbish...

well here is an ST faux par on a grand scale....

the seven trumpets...

I am more pleased with puzzle pieces. The only advance of the ANT is that it has a dragging tool. It is not possible to create such tools for new network. But the system itself is somehow useless.

I think the oneway highway pieces will mostly be used to realize complex interchange/exit solutions or to split the highways where it's the best solution, f.e. if there are many hills and small valleys. I think mostly oneway highways will represent short parts of a regular highway and not a replacement for a oneway road which begins and results into a regular oneway road.

Highway puzzle pieces are better.

Forget the ANT! It's useless.

i hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane.... update 9 will follow at some point....

thanks

Mightygoose

Great finds Mightygoose!

The stack and diagonal interchanges take me way back in the day.  I was an avid follower of the stack interchange development about a year before I ever became a member @ ST (found the site in 2004).

About the interchange you gave me credit for, I vaguely recall it, among with others.  A lot of images have been lost both @ ST and my hard drive, so even if I did post it, I don't know if I was actually the one who made it.

Anyways, good job! What's next?

EDIT: Speaking of stack interchanges, anyone remember these?

Thats the one thing I don't like about the one in the NAM.  The flyovers should go over the roadbed.  That would be much more realistic! Take this stack in RL for example.  It has flyover ramps as well as ramps that go below the roadway.

Hey Everyone, I have a new rather interesting interchange to show you.  Its simple, yet elegant.

Again, please click on the images to view them in their full resolution.  Thanks!

Its my first (pure) Multi-RHW interchange constructed with the MIS.

This new interchange should make it easier for motorists in this part of town.  The tunnel was removed and replaced with an overpass, so this shouldn't hinder cross-traffic.  Drivers on the highway can totally bypass this interchange by driving on the express (or inner) lanes of the roadway.
-It is now nearly completed.  To the north, the highway widens from 8 to 10 lanes through a similar Multi-RHW configuration before it swells to a 12 lane transfer.
-And for those who are wondering, its a real image!  100% pure RHW/MIS.  No tricks or conversions required for the Multi-RHW this time!

More pictures can be found in my city journal over at Simtropolis.  Actually, there's a lot of good stuff there if you're interested in urban transportation.  Just follow the link in my signature to go to it (the one to ST)!

Best,
-Haljackey

Update 9

INTERCHANGE THEORY: PART 1, Identifying Interchanges

DISCLAIMER:
This naming system is a hybrid of several globally recognised systems that have been combined and extrapolated to encompass pretty much anything possible in sc4, it is the naming system i will use in this thread from now on i would appreciate if others that post pictures in this thread would do the same.

Okay class lets begin with the basics.

DIAMONDS
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kurumi.com%2Froads%2Finterchanges%2Fdiamond.gif&hash=e4ba500e9e41ee69e48bdad629524c2bd6135af6)

A very simple dsign involving two carriageways, usually perpendicular to each other however other angles are perfectly possible, of different grade(grade being quantity of traffic usually handled). The major grade carriageway in a diamond is referred to as the surface road, as it is customary that the road with higher useage has the least deviation from the horizontal. The minor grade carriageway is reffered to in this case as the street. The street may go either over or under the surface road but it will clearly undergo a greater elevation change if both routes intersect on level ground.

Diamonds are the simplest 4 ramp interchanges. They are often used in where there is a very large grade difference in the carriageways such as highways passing through inner boroughs of cities. However they scale up badly. At the ramp/street intersection, unless the street is very low grade, there must be lights. This slows down traffic, and if the street is high grade, cause congestion. Furthermore if the majority of traffic is using only one ramp of the interchange then efficient light timings are going to cause congestion on the street, especially if it is cross-carriageway turning(a left turn in the US or a right in the UK).

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fdiamond.jpg&hash=6a9521f9d2293b7710f3c42742f5cf40933efb9e)

This is a Classic Diamond created by Haljackey, in this case the the RHW is the surface road and the avenue is the street. As you can see the street(avenue) undergoes a greater elevation change as previously mentioned. Root word "Diamond".

Common variations in order of prefix.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg505.imageshack.us%2Fimg505%2F5837%2Finterchange3hf9.jpg&hash=01e46d54727c80a45c39b4ac8b86245ab8ce0a95)

This is a Lofted Diamond created by Mulefisk. These are far more common in Simcity than Classic Diamonds and occur when the two carriageways interesect at different elevations. The common practice in these instances is to minimise the deviation from level of both carriageways and allowing the ramps to cover the elevation change. This makes sense as they are the slowest part of an interchange. Prefix in combination "Loft-".

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Ffoldeddiamond.jpg&hash=a334fd9928bf78883fa783fababf989bc4a17d70)

This is a Folded Diamond created by Haljackey.  When space is limited two ramps from one side of the interchange are flipped and curled inside the two ramps on the other side. Folded diamonds are entirely a space saving variation. Prefix in combination "Fold-".

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg521.imageshack.us%2Fimg521%2F5848%2Fterraciafeb876120441215yv5.jpg&hash=92847781aeafc63b81bee7431cea6ba562da6511)

This is a Splitfold Diamond created by  Patricius Maximus and is identical to a folded daimond except the two folds are at opposing corners. Prefix in combination "Splitfold-".

A Partfold Diamond is also possible where one side of the interchange is folded and the other classic. Prefix in combination "Partfold-".

Note from author:- I have so far been unable to find a picture of one, but will create this junction later for your viewing

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg233.imageshack.us%2Fimg233%2F5426%2Fterraciajul266712043697ut9.jpg&hash=070800e49e6538b78b15b68148f21c966ca7de69)

This is a Double Diamond created by Patricius Maximus. It is a named such as there are two independant streets on the same ramps, as is visible in the  upper right part of this image. Triple and Quadruple Diamonds are also possible however at this point it is worth considering other options that will be covered later(i.e. feeder lanes). Prefix in combination "Double/triple/quadruple" followed by a space.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fhalfdiamond.jpg&hash=39a64766d367ea79932c255b94b0c7d5ebcc813b)

This is a Half Diamond created by Haljackey. This is a restricted access junction that depends entirely on how you set it up. Root word "Half Diamond".

Notes from Author:-

Splitfold Half Diamonds
and Partfold Half Diamonds are impossible, for obvious reasons.

Lofted Diamond variations are so common that unless it is a pure Lofted Diamond the prefix "Loft-" is NOT required.

Although folded diamonds and their variants are sometimes referred to as types of parclo, i refute this word as cloverleaf interchanges have many many variations as it is.

A summary of Diamond naming follows thus, delete as applicable

"Loft-/Lofted" - "Fold-/Folded/Splitfold/Half-fold" - "Double/Triple/X-tuple" - "Diamond/Half Diamond/Classic Diamond"

So show me your diamonds... and make them creative.... i'll be back with some later...

cheers
MG

The reason a lot of these aren't in NAM is we don't have people who can do the modelling.  Most of the members of NAM have 1 or 2 things they do well, mostly modding.  We are desperately short on modellers as transit modelling is difficult.  Anyone willing to have a crack please drop one of us a line.  We are as keen to see some of these as you are.

You asked and thus you shall recieve MG  but I'll let you name them with a proper designation as that is not my forte.  In other words, simple things like naming intersections elude me....don't know why but I've always been like that :D

Anyways, here are the two images you asked me to post here.  The first one is what I guess you might call an extended diamond intersection with elongated on/off ramps.  In the rural area where I live, most of our intersections look like this.....
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg258.imageshack.us%2Fimg258%2F7404%2Fintersection001sv4.jpg&hash=f18b5cfe2d6bb8689d0a416cf0ed14004ac66932)

Others in my neck of the woods are more like the one below in the larger towns [the one south of here is just over 10k]......minus the Big Dig :P
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg258.imageshack.us%2Fimg258%2F7451%2Fintersection002kk8.jpg&hash=66d374379c4d2b9c595307f482db97d9f226bf21)

Oh, and thanks for PM'ing me about this or I would have probably not discovered it for awhile :)

Very interesting update, MG!  Very well constructed too!

Isn't it interesting that EVERY interchange in your update used the RHW network?

You want us to show our diamonds here?  Well, you already have shown a couple of mine, but I was able to find a bunch more to show.

You also resized my images to 1024x640 instead of putting in a full resolution link!  Whats with that?
-Anyways, I will follow this trend and resize my images to 1024x640 just for this thread, since it isn't either a "Show Us Your" or MD.

Here we go:

Half-diamond
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Faycu26.webshots.com%2Fimage%2F49225%2F2005467328113477477_rs.jpg&hash=39c2f5c64cc5d191bc24a3b40387dc4a936a6fae)

This would be a lofted-diamond, right?
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Faycu20.webshots.com%2Fimage%2F46739%2F2005496689624579335_rs.jpg&hash=ddda028335b663fdeff648dfc241498126e4f755)

Is this classic or lofted?
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Faycu05.webshots.com%2Fimage%2F49604%2F2005415270150631205_rs.jpg&hash=b746bd110794186a4e4086061bf494c79eda2c51)

Lofted half-diamond:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Faycu12.webshots.com%2Fimage%2F48211%2F2005462300929550759_rs.jpg&hash=fe2abe63ec41b7c7329f3d0b9a33763f6bc84212)

Not sure of the "correct" name for this diamond.  What would you call it?
-Oh, and note the old RHW texture, this is an oldie!
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Faycu16.webshots.com%2Fimage%2F48415%2F2005495655420893312_rs.jpg&hash=3d874f5bd883e47336b0470debb14064110b41a5)

And what would this diamond be referred to as?
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Faycu01.webshots.com%2Fimage%2F50440%2F2005431879525501439_rs.jpg&hash=1dea6579c0ffdab61d3a6c50c4484f1d5c1d2276)

Lastly, if you call  parclo's diamonds, then what would you call this one?  A splitfold or something like that?
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Faycu26.webshots.com%2Fimage%2F48185%2F2005498842440748371_rs.jpg&hash=a3c5b58908e3805144afaa84fe1c3250cef4ff39)

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed them!

Best,
-Haljackey

1. Half Diamond - correct
2. Lofted Diamond - correct
3. Lofted Diamond
4. Lofted Half Diamond - correct
5. Lofted Double Diamond
6. Loftfold Diamond - although very convoluted due to the surface road turning parallel to the street
7. Folded Diamond - thats an easyone :P

Pro'lly would never have to happen IRL because they'd just build the ramps directly from the bridge (at least on one side. It'd be harder with the rail on the other side).

The whole interchange also made me wish upon an NAM for left-hand exits (I know they're evil, but in this case...)

WoW Mg you have out done yourself here in identifying the interchanges and Hal, Blade, and Toichus wonderful ramps there....  Blade are you talking about Wausau per chance  $%Grinno$%   That does look like the majority of the realignment they are doing down there with 29/51 project [linkie] (http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/projects/d4/us51wis29/index.htm)....  Theres a linkie for all the ones who love the road........

Yup.  That whole construction on the 51/29 interchange is one big mess.

Yup.  That whole construction on the 51/29 interchange is one big mess.

I haven't been up there (from Stevens Point) since they've cut it down to 1 lane both ways, at least at times... but it WILL be a better situation after they're done.  For people who are heading West on 29 to have to get off and sit at a stoplight didn't make a whole lot of sense...

There's a smaller project going on in Stevens Point with the expansion of Hwy 10.  As they've gotten to Point, they're now going to be routing a bi-pass for Hwy 10 north of Stevens Point as it travels to Marshfield.  Eventually, too, they're going to link 10 to 51/39 in Plover, just south of the new Crossroads Common development in Plover.

It's actually really interesting to see what's gone on with that... AIG-Travelguard, a decent sized employer in town is looking to expand in a few years and had something worked out with the town of Plover to move right where the DOT had been planning for the Southern link up of Hwy 10 to I-39, much to the chagrin of Stevens Point... but Point has snatched them back and offered them tax incentives to move to the Portage County business park, not 1 mile further North.  This should allow the DOT to complete the bi-pass around Stevens Point and avoid routing cars through Hwy 10 East, which is always really congested, as there are lots of businesses along the corridor.

Once they complete this, they're planning to expand 51/39 to 3 lanes both directions through the Point/Plover area, similar to what they're giong in Wausau.  One of the biggest differences in the projects (other than the fact that there isn't as much population to deal with and they're doing it in stages instead of all at once) is that the Point/Plover area has more open land in the places they're doing the bi-pass.

My question is if Point will be able to sustain all the businesses in the area without the additional traffic through town... Perhaps it's grown enough to be self-sustaining, but...

Stevens Point always seemed to be 'stagnant' when I lived there in the 80's [used to live on Walker St less than a block from Madison Elementary School], meaning the population neither grew nor dropped by more than 100 people when the latest census reports came out.  Plover on the other hand has had a population explosion compared to Point and it's been built up quite a bit in the 14 years since I moved to Tomahawk.  Give it another 20 years or so and Plover will be bigger than Point and Point will become a suburb of Plover instead of the other way around.

getting back on topic, I have to say Toichus Maximus that that is one radical intersection.  Nicely done

I like the way you use tunnels and overpasses. You sure do an amazing engineering job on these interchanges.

Do you know where these ramps and overpasses come from??

The tunnels are from buddybud and are on one of hist posts over at simtropolis. I'm afraid i've not got the link. And it looks to me that the road itself just has non-slope conforming lots on either side of it.

Its been a while since anyone has posted here!  But, since we're still on the topic of diamonds, I have a rather interesting one to show you:

Its a 4 way urban interchange, where a diagonal avenue interchanges with a orthogonal elevated highway.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg172.imageshack.us%2Fimg172%2F9417%2Fclipboard01dz3.jpg&hash=a0874955caf893462463533131675f70cbe04e9b)

Having trouble seeing it?  Here is close up from another angle.

I don't know what MG will classify this as.  Maybe a lofted diamond?   ()what()

Best,

Since this is the interchange thread...

On my way to work in downtown LA, I pass this interchange everyday (the 110 and the 105 freeways). It's absolutely humongous, and comprises of 5 or 6 levels. There are not only ramps going to/from each freeway, there are also carpool ramps that go directly to/from carpool lanes on each freeway. Alot of concrete just to manage an interchange between 2 city freeways.....

If we could only do this in SC4!

epic threadomancy..... 18 months later.... copied from the interchange guide so not to clutter it up further.

Quoteok i initially connected it to RHW4 then i realised they were RHW2 stubs... so i tried that, then i realised the one way issue and went to OWR.... lol so RHW 4 it is. the idea behind the experiment is minimising bridges....

OK MAJOR EDIT : - 201011030235

ok lets try a grade separated divergent stack...

i need help in designing large intersections. so far i been used to designing my cities on simcity3000 and it was not until a few days ago that i was more interested in Simcity4 beilve it or not i bought Simcity 4 a little over a year ago. but i did not like SC4 at first becasue it did not have a real region based on alocation near my hometown. until i discovered NHP cleveland this is a region thats only located 25 miles from my house on the south side of akron, ohio.

i was used to playing a region on SC3000 called central-akron and it measured 9 by 9 miles. covered the downtown all the way over to a few blocks passed the center of tallmadge city.

and i think that the widest my freeway routes would get was only 4 tiles across this is the 2 tiles for the freeway carrageway plus two tiles of open space with trees on them. on this map 1 mile was 28.445 tiles.

ok illget to the point 1 mile on NHP cleveland is 60.235 tiles across alittle over double the detail of my SC3000 city. so how much more wider does a freeway have to be?

march 11,
no im not basing it on claculations or anything like that its just the NHP cleveland map does not use this 100 tiles to the mile calculation. and its calculation is still double what im used to. wo i am considering that a man freeway carrageway could be two avenues seperated by a tile of open space with trees and ofcourse the two tiles of trees on the other sides of the avenues thos the freeway carrageway would be 7 tiles wide. reason why i want to use avenues is becasue im not sure if two halves of a freeway carrage way can both be designated as one way. and im also wanting to know if both halves of a avenue can be designated as one way?.

other than that thats all i got so far. casue im trying to build NHP cleveland to the scale thats come with its map which is 34 miles by 17 miles.

Post by: Tarkus on March 09, 2011, 03:13:18 PM
The scale in SC4 works out such that each tile is 16 meters on each side.  16m roughly converts to 52.5 feet, meaning 1 mile is actually about 100.57 tiles, so between 100 and 101 tiles, not 60.235.  If you're trying to base things on your SC3000 calculations, the size of an SC3000 tile would be 3.53 times larger than an SC4 tile, so a 4 tile ROW in SC3000 would be about 14 tiles.
