Title: Slope City
Post by: jeronij on November 29, 2006, 09:25:50 AM
Hello dear SC4 Devotion members,

It is time to play a little bit again. Rayced asked for a tutorial about building credibly on sloped areas ( a hill side for instance) . Instead making a tutorial, I will develope an experimental city which I´ll call "Slope City" from now on.

For those members interested in following somehow the ideas shown in this city, I have uploaded my TunnelandSlope Mod version to the site´s "exchange" for your downloading pleasure  ( or pain, not sure  ;D ) .  You MUST have it installed if you want to have only a moderarte amount of problems while creating your sloped cities  ::) !!!

OK, enough :blahblah: and lets go for with the first pics.

SC_01  This is a quickly terraformed testing city I created some time ago for other purposes, but the layout makes it quite challenging to build a city on it

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg427.imageshack.us%2Fimg427%2F965%2Fscu0101ot9.jpg&hash=5e510ff3c26322979a5a78033e4da0b2abc446be)

SC_02 A frontal view

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg427.imageshack.us%2Fimg427%2F696%2Fscu0102zl8.jpg&hash=e3543292205cc1aff8b4b7974dfb8a213eff81d7)

SC_03 The start point is this corner. As you can see, some previous building area  terraforming has been done.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg291.imageshack.us%2Fimg291%2F5426%2Fscu0103sn8.jpg&hash=f86cb5e0fd7b8b8e16e5fc2f9de28c096176fc57)

SC_04 As usual, different points of view give a better idea about the overall situation.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg291.imageshack.us%2Fimg291%2F7297%2Fscu0104fh4.jpg&hash=f197218006552fcd70c431c36c8d4bad35078535)

SC_05 And still another rotation....

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg291.imageshack.us%2Fimg291%2F3845%2Fscu0105ow7.jpg&hash=bdc94f25cf8cebc4e4c68294466aedb91451cdfe)

SC_06 Finally a close up, with the grid intentionally turned on, so you can see better the "tridimensionality".

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg427.imageshack.us%2Fimg427%2F4553%2Fscu0106ry6.jpg&hash=50df251a0516db4c6c63753b26105f0fc52d0145)

This time you can also follow the "tutorial" from this point. I want to invite to the interested members to download this city, at this point of development, and the Slope mod mentioned before, so you can try what is proposed here in your computers.

You can find the city in the exchange section. I am not sure how this may work in other computers so I suggest you to create a blank new region and import that city in a BIG city tile. SLOPE CITY (http://www.sc4devotion.com/components/com_facileforms/uploads/JRJ_City_Slope%20City_V1.zip)

Last NAM's version installed and running is needed. There are some trees also which you may see as boxes. if this is the case, simlply bulldoze the boxes. We dont need them for this experiment  ;D

I hope you find the idea interesting  :satisfied:

EDIT:  Since the exchange has no downloads counter, let me know if someone is interested by posting a word here  :-[

Hi to all, I am glad that some of you find this idea interesting... I´ll start to play a bit and make some pics so you can try how this works  ;)

Btw, I guess some of you did download the city tile... how about importing it ?¿. Some problems ?¿

I am using Cycledogg`s painted desert mod..... (a custom version in fact), so if you have water level problems, just let me know. I will post the necessary terrain parameters file if necessary.

Interested in the challenge keep an eye in this topic  ;D

So you've made a jagged edge fix for the painted dessert train mod ? :) That would be sweet if you uploaded it!

Hi again,

It is time for the second chapter in this history  ;)

After the massive pre terraforming, including most of the networks to do it (street, road and railroad), it is time to bulldoze all this stuff, and let the main transit layout show up.

SC_02_01 Here you can see where to start bulldozing.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg485.imageshack.us%2Fimg485%2F1726%2Fscu0201sk1.jpg&hash=385c1d9633eea0d982d1ff036988282980c28e5c)

SC_02_02 After some carefully work, this area should look like this:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg316.imageshack.us%2Fimg316%2F9065%2Fscu0202mi6.jpg&hash=1236781a37d8aa66b9fcb956c2ee4cc48a65f5d6)

SC_02_03  Now we go for the rest of the zone...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg243.imageshack.us%2Fimg243%2F6776%2Fscu0203yl8.jpg&hash=9fef268aaa31484a943e0b4512f87885f3d55910)

SC_02_04 As you can notice, we only leave the main arteries

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg243.imageshack.us%2Fimg243%2F6843%2Fscu0204tr1.jpg&hash=7edb831010d6e6c9edc3f416bdcc9257e5535115)

SC_02_05 Now it is also time to deal with the main intersections.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg485.imageshack.us%2Fimg485%2F5031%2Fscu0205kj4.jpg&hash=2332d1ccf50d14775ec33ad885fcb45274b13d52)

SC_02_06 This one was quite easy to complete.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg243.imageshack.us%2Fimg243%2F6783%2Fscu0206az8.jpg&hash=78a1b488cc94bd23c4892d309757b9f76ad257a9)

SC_02_07 And this area is ready.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg243.imageshack.us%2Fimg243%2F6940%2Fscu0207nm1.jpg&hash=8644b061ca18841c61cedd4917f245eb28c8feed)

SC_02_08 Time to continue with more work. We want to change some of those roads to streets ( I LOVE the street side mod !!!)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg243.imageshack.us%2Fimg243%2F5007%2Fscu0208it1.jpg&hash=46de2e61011a67d1234a2447dac25fa06e174eeb)

SC_02_09 The idea is to leave the last road tile as a mark. After you have layed the streets, you have to remove the single road tiles and replace them with streets.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg316.imageshack.us%2Fimg316%2F4948%2Fscu0209bs9.jpg&hash=0c25f93b5d6b73650900857b1748a38cec785642)

SC_02_10 This area is completed. You may also notice the different spaces between the streets. It is important to keep this in mind when you create your network layout. This will limit the type of buildings you will be able to develop later.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg485.imageshack.us%2Fimg485%2F6416%2Fscu0210sq8.jpg&hash=2f93198e493b0564efdbda741a9c9f7cae752d6a)

SC_02_11 Time to finish this other intersection.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg243.imageshack.us%2Fimg243%2F8512%2Fscu0211sd9.jpg&hash=6679c579e4529284dd35ef500e9dd65d66630b4c)

SC_02_12 Avoiding traffic lights is always a good idea. Roundabout are a good solution for key intersections, and allow to connect many different transit networks.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg243.imageshack.us%2Fimg243%2F8512%2Fscu0211sd9.jpg&hash=6679c579e4529284dd35ef500e9dd65d66630b4c)

SC_02_13 OK. Ready for the next chapter ?¿

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg485.imageshack.us%2Fimg485%2F1733%2Fscu0213hd4.jpg&hash=4d03d2a4d3a59f60e538072d871bd0ea226d70c6)

I hope you want to follow this experiment

metasmurf, nope my friend, I did not made a jagged edges mod for this terrain. I only added some snow  ;D !!!

I hope you can keep the development  :P

I've actually been using a similar technique for quite some time using your slope mod. The thing is, you actually do it much better than me, as I typically only build on flat land.

Your building style actually makes it possible to easily play on some of the more difficult terrains out there. Awesome work, man!!

I do something similar with those terrains however I do it while the game is running and without cheats. That means I only do small sections at a time, I did the sanfran  that came with the game like that. That is a cool terrain for the tutorial

I am a bit of a purist though, I dont like alter anything too much when it comes to something like playing the game ;)

This looks really cool!!  I wish I was patient enough to do that.  My problem is I have so many projects on the go I dont have time to play the game of late.

Great technique!

Are you playing by what David D. calls the "Sandbox mode?"  He started 3RR with a 1,ooo,ooo,ooo simolens in the bank and I just wondered if you started Slope City the same way.

If you're going to do a lot of texturing and beautification you almost always need that kind of $$.

Jeronij I need your help.  I downloaded the file Slope City file (JRJ_City_Slope%20City_V1.zip) and when I unzip it, it didn't have a bitmap file.  It looked like a file that you have to use SC4Terraformer to import it into SC4.  I tried using a bitmap file from another region but it cut the map into two cities.

I tried to load it into SC4 as is and it no can do.  #?¿?¿?$

Do I need a bitmap file that goes along with this file? What am I missing?

I really want to follow you as you work on this map.

Thanks

OOPS!  I just figured it out for myself.  (Pat on back, pat on back)  Durn . . . I wish I had longer arms.

I finally realized you have to use the Mapper rather than the TerraFormer.  DUD!

Sorry . . .

Now I'll get started and see if I can catch up with you.

Thanks again for letting me be a part of this community.

Hi Jeronij:

I think I've just about caught up with you.  I worked on it last night and pretty much duplicated what you did.  There are several problems.  One minor and one major.

I'm going to try to use one of the free image hosts to show my picture. I've never done it before so bear with me.

Minor problem: I downloaded some "dirt" roads but I've got so much stuff in my plugin folder that I think I've got a conflict somewhere or something is loaded later that overwrites it.  That is no problem.  I used streets instead.

Major problem:  I can't complete the tunnel.   :'(  On STEX David D. in his 3RR map he has been using in his mayor forum, went through a very good tunnel demo using a modd from STEX called "Bigredfish Tunnel and Slope Mod."  It's no longer available on their server. I did a search and found one called Tunnel%20mod.zip.  I tried and tried to get it to load and work but I could not find where it ends up in the Mayor menu or how to make the tunnel.  &mmm

Do you have any suggestions or could you point me to a place where I can find how to make tunnels in SC4?  Thanks.

Now I'll try to add a link by posting a thumbnail.  Take a look at these and see if you can see anything that I've missed.

Hi Keith, I am glad that somebody decided to try this baby

You can find my modified BigRedFish Slope mod version ( which is the one I am using for this city) in the exchange section here  ;)
Download it, extract it to your plugins folder, and play the game. Make sure you dont have any other slope mod installed.

I have some new pics of the city, which I will post asap. In the meantime:

HMMMMM!   #?¿?¿?$

I just noticed that the thumbnails I posted are not showing up.   :angrymore:  Great service the up/down loader is providing no? Maybe I need to go to their website and log on.  That's a pain if I gotta do that each time.  I'll try it and see what happens.

Thanks for the info on the tunnel.  I'll go and do that right now.  I've decided to uninstall and reinstall a fresh copy of SC4.  My plugin folder is starting to drip and leak around the edges.  ?=mad)= I spend all last night and the last few days looking for new things that I've got to have.  I gave all the downloads a critical eye and saying "Do I really need that?"

A forum on how plugin folders are organized might be a good one to get started.  I've tried several and haven't found one that I really like.  I'm going to give David D.'s the guru of 3RR a shot this time.  He is such a great guy and really has a working knowledge of the game.

I'm looking forward to "Plopping" with you in our Slope City.  It's always fun to build a city with someone.  I find that I really learn the finer techniques.  The basic infrastructure is the same but a person's personality and artistic skills really show up when you compare the two.

That is why my plugin folder leaks.  I see a BAT that I should have used in my city and then it's "hell bent for leather" downloading everything that looks even close to what I want.

My mom used to tell me I have the philosophy of, "If a little bit is good a WHOLE lot more is better." Well back to my surfing the place and see what is new today.

Thanks again for setting this up.  I'm looking forward to working on this with you.

Talk to you later.

Time for some quick pictures about this experiment  ;D

I started to add some details to the area. The pics are mainly self explaining, but dont doubt to ask if you want to know more about anythig  ;)

I hope you may notice how to draw the RCI areas. Small strips for the sloped areas, and bigger wherever the land is a little more flat.
The zones must layed always facing the network that will require less automatic terraforming. See the small commercials in picture 5 as an example of what I mean.

I hope you find the pictures interesting, and you can follow the experiment without major problems  ;)

Hi Jeronij:

Looks like you are getting a good start on Slope City.  I'm going to be little slow.  I just finished reinstalling SIM4 and now I've got to set up my plugin folder.  I worked on it this morning and have got the files all organized and ready to unpack.

I'm not working down at the greenhouses any more.  We're through shipping out the Poinsettias.  We had about 75,000 this year, so needless we were very busy.  We done now, so I've had a lot of time the last couple of days to search the web looking for good downloads.

At STEX I search for the most popular downloads in RCI.  Plus farming and a few others.  Each subject had at least 10 pages so I downloaded all the files on the first 10 pages.  After I got all the dependencies and support files I've got a lot of work to get back to normal.

I won't do much tomorrow being Christmas an all, but next week I'm going to hit it hard and heavy.  I've got to unpack all the files.  I downloaded all Simgoobers, his file was 75+ so needless I've still got some work next week. The next week we're off to Mexico for my son's wedding so that week will be shot.

I've got some ideas on how I want to approach it. I'll show you as I go along and would appreciate your comments and help.

Have a happy holiday.

Keith

Title: Re: Slope City

Thanks guys for the comments.

I used about three different rock mods:

Mostly
Jeroni's big and small rocks
Maxis single large and small rocks
and a few from
Goldiva rocks.

For the trees I used
Cycledoggs tree mod.

I first placed the rocks.  I started on the very steep part of the cliff and slowly worked down clicking as fast as I could until I hit pay dirt and the first one was placed.   That was my starting point for a single tile.  Usually the large rocks first.  Then I would set the trees.  Sometime the rocks didn't look so good, but when the trees "grew" up they covered the faults.  (A trick I learned from David D., who is working on Three Rivers. Go check out his landscapes on STEX if you haven't already. Like one of Seinfeld's girl friends said, "They're spectacular! And they're real!")

After that I used Jeroni's small group of rocks and dropped them here and there.  I was careful not to use too many of them.  I thought it didn't look natural with a lot of them all over the place.  I then finished with the small single rocks and I placed them anywhere they would go down over the big rocks, trees, fallen logs, etc, clicking madly all over the place.  I dropped the bare logs here and there where they would go.

I tried to keep the evergreens in the rocky spots that I made and the aspens in the non rocky spots.

It was fun to see it develop,  I hope that answered you question.  If not, let me know and I'll try again.

Help!  Thought I'd try and do this, it will teach me things :D.  However, I seem to be a dummy.  I've got the slope city file but when I try to import it in SC4, I can't find the file in the import city tool and when I go to the file manager, the file has disappeared!  Where's the Fries? (next time we'll wash your mouth out with soap)!  Help please.  I made my own config file but still... no.  I just copied the folder I downloaded into the regions folder and when I bring it up in SC4 it will make a config file and jeronij's slope city.sc4 file is there till I try to import it.  I stuck it in downloads folder too.  No help.

Hello to all, it seems I missed some posts  :-[ !!! I am sorry for this !!!

keithseid, the woods over the hill lool very nice. I`d suggest you to mix the different trees a little bit more, just to give it a more random appearance  ;) . The overall look is great, and your "mini" tutorial is also quite helpful  &apls ( However, some links would be welcome  :P !!!) . Now you can start with the urban area down the hill, where I showed my last pics....try to build something nice there  ;D

petercintn, Slope City is a BIG city tile. You must open a region where there is at least one big city tile, and import Slope city in that big tile. That is all. If you are not sure about how to proceed, simply create a blank new region. The defaul Maxis regions do include two big city tiles. I hope this is the reason of the problem.

Hello to all  ;D

It is time for some more "sloped" pics  ;) . I wont use any special building for this area. Mostly Maxis ones. This will make the city more standard, but also more easy for the ones following the development  #stsfd· .

The key when zoning on the slopes is to keep the zones facing the correct network tram. It does not matter if the land changes when you zone, but the street/road must not change !!!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg163.imageshack.us%2Fimg163%2F2724%2Fjrjsl0401yp5.jpg&hash=99583ce456e4c3c750db8c28f252556ba4d1c5c8)

Lets  have some views on the ready area, before the click

Thanks Jeroni for the comments.  I should have read your comments before I started the final yard work.  /sad¬¬  Oh well . . next one.

I've been busy in the yard tonight, and I think I've just about got the preliminary landscaping finished.  Here are a few pictures of what I've finished to date.

This one is an overall view of the big forest that suffered a severe fire several years ago.

. . . Keith, you got carried away with the rocks.

Ya, I know.  But live and learn.

Hi Keithseid, nice pictures and very good nature plopables placement  . Tne amount of rocks is ok for me.

May I suggest you a few things to improve the buidling on slopes ?¿ I will  ;D

Picture 7 . You may want to revise the walls placement, specially on the left side of the picture....

and....

Picture 8 upper side, I would say you relayed these roads...they look too bumpy....too SC4Vanilla..... $%Grinno$%  My suggestion, use the railroad tool to re-slope these tiles....I mean, bulldoze the roads, and place a railroad instead to make the slope gentle....delete the railroad and place the road again, et voila !!! I hope you understand the idea  ;)

Great work overall. Dont worry much about my comments, I am always too perfectionist ... :-[

Thanks you old "eagle eye."  :o

Your comments and suggestions are always welcomed.  I appreciate your interest in what I'm working on and will make these changes right now.

I think every Sim4 player is a perfectionist at heart.  That is what makes the game so appealing.  To be able to  get everything just right so it looks like you could be living there and driving around on the roads looking at all the sights.

Thanks again and keep the comments coming.

Hi Jeroni:

I made the changes as you suggested and it looks 100% better.  Thanks a lot for the help.  I'm still a little disappointed with the walls on picture #7 (I think.)  The problem seems to be the transition from one level to the next.

The wall bulges out when it goes up to the next level.  I've made sure the areas before the transition and at the new area on top is level, but it still looks like it bulges when you look at it from a certain angle.   #?¿?¿?$

Keith, for picture 7, left side of the wall:

I suggest you to make two separate rows of walls.. one for the upper level, and one for the lower level.
Idea:

Upper corner: 2 straight tiles: 1 lower corner  (in the tile just in front of the first lateral road)
Upper corner (again): straigt files....

Do you follow me  ;) ?¿

Thanks Jeroni:

I've worked on page #7 and #8.  Your suggestions were very helpful.  Take a look at the new #7 (the road going up the hill) I think it is now smoothed out.

nº7 is looking much better now, indeed   Why no add retaining walls behid the small houses in the middle of the picture ?¿. Only one lower diagonal and two straight...
nº8, I would change the two corner walls. You used straight pieces. You'd use upper diagonal pieces.

Enough of walls !!! Now you may want to check the residential area. For such a sloped area, only 1x2 Low density lots are indicated. Bigger/denser that this will make the lot foundations show up and we want to avoid this wherever is possible.  So start bulldozing some R's  !!!

For 1x2 lots to show, check my pics where I show the residential layout before it grows. Notice that I placed 1 1X2 strip R-LD, 1 1x2 strip R-MD, and so on. This will avoid bigger than 1x2 lots to grow. Just a hint  ;)

When the fences do go underground, like in your first picture, you can try placing the alternative corner piece. The 90º one / the one you used in the last picture. Unfortunately the game has different behaviours in the two diagonal directions  &mmm

What are you using for power?  I found where SBFT mentioned a "wonder tree."  I could'nt locate the file to download.  I used the power shed in a couple of places it's better than the windmill.

I also placed the mayors house, the cemetary, a large police station and a large elementary at the very top of the mountain.  I don't like them there and I think it's only a temporary place for them.

Thanks again for you interest and help.

- Off topic - I tried to log on to BSC LEX but didn't have much luck.  Do you need a new password and id?  I reapplied and hope to get my email soon.

Thanks

Keith

Hello again,

keithsed, I would swear that these pictures were not there last night  #?¿?¿?$. I have completely missed them  :-[

My "eagle eye"  ;) suggestions would be:
Read my last post in the previous page about how to control the types of buildings we want to make grow in a determinate place. for the main residential area I would only use 1x2 lots.
Why dont you give a try to my street side mod ?¿. It is not still available here, but you can find it at Simtropolis Stex. I would say that this mod will greatly improve the look of your streets....but I wont say that because I am the mod creator...and it would sound arrogant  $%Grinno$%
We are experimenting, and this is not very important, but you could hide both, the game menus and the UDI missions icon, when you take your pictures ?  ;) . It helps to be able to see every detail, and the pictures look more "natural".
Finally, one of the things you should not worry about is demolishing and bulldozing your areas when you are not completely satisfied with them. Destroy and create. We must also have some funny "destroyer" moments   %BUd%
For my water and power I use a cheated windmill and waterpump...both give 500.000 units of power/water, so I dont need to worry about this. It also helps to simulate a regional power/water distribution. In RL you dont see a power plant every 2 or 4 kilometers, do you  $%Grinno$% ?. I also use a mod, I forgot the name..., which multiplies the range for both, water and power, so you can avoid power lines, and just place them where you want the people see them  ::)

mightygoose, I see you go for a metropoli  ;) !!!. Very good idea to place the school at that place  . Read above if you want to hide some of the power lines.

Now to both  ;D , come on and start placing some details  :satisfied:. Not only plain zoning please  :D !!! Some plazas/parks, some walkways, some statues, something....  but dont overload your city with parks, because they increase desirability and $$$ will soon come and change your buildings. Make often the buildings historical, this will avoid bad surprises  ::) ....I hope you get the idea  ;D

at the moment im just demand gaming to get enough to start juggling with the real high rises then i will layout each individual tower i want and where then i will park and plaza and path around them.... the road layout will change too....

Here's my take on Slope City, after a couple of hours playing:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F7176%2Fslopecitysa01bv6.jpg&hash=ad675e3e8ce0458dfd5b85a596dfc5d7d28741b7)
The commercial area of Slope City. It's quite small, since I plan on having some decent industrial jobs somewhere on the map. There's still some undeveloped plots of land...

North.

South. A couple of high rises have been built...

I'll post some more tomorrow. My take on jeronij's Slope City should be done in a few days.

LOL, okay.

On the first picture, in the lower-left - that's a hospital and a police station.
On the second picture, in the lower half, there is a high school and library. Up on the slopes, there is a small school (it's across from the empty space)
On the third picture, the same school can be seen on the far left.

I'll probably put a big library on the third pic or something. Something that fits in with the ambience of the area. :P

You know, the great thing about the street tree mod - it hides the foundations of the sloped buildings quite well.

And I thought my bulldozer was big.  Great pictures of these bemoths.  &apls

Hmmm..... I think I've seen them somewhere before.  ;)

Jeroni, I tried your side street mod and it really improves the eye candy.

Today, I've been busy today working on my annual tax return  :angrymore: so I haven't had much time to work on Slope City.  :( I did climb on the old bulldozer yesterday and just about wore it out.  I bulldozed everything and then watched it regenerate.  It was fun.   &hlp I really like to "blow" things up, especially the electrical towers.  They look great going down.

I think my new city looks much better.  You are right again, as usual.

I've started a bus transportation system and I'm still working out the kinks.

Jeroni, you can be as arrogant, proud, confident and conceited as you want, and I won't tell a sole.  You people that have modified the original game and have provided the artwork/goodies that we all enjoy have my utmost admiration. I wish I knew how to do the things you moder's do.

You people have made the game what it is today. SC4 would be a very lackluster and boring game without your work and the others that have modified the original game. It would always generate the same buildings, props and have the same game play. . . . Boring!   /wrrd%& Maxis did get one thing right by providing the plugin option.

When I saw Badsim's work in the new member's forum, the Eiffel Tower, the cathedral, the city layout, and his landscaping, I'm at a loss for words.   :o  I have never and I mean N.E.V.E.R.!! Seen a Simcity like that one anywhere!  Without you guys, his work of art, and I do mean ART! Would be impossible. It has been you guys that have really made the game what it is today.  You have kept all of us crying for more and more add ons.

Just look at how fast this site has grown. It is amazing.  Yesterday, I noticed that STEX's has had more than 24 million downloads! That is directly related to the work you and others have done on this game.

There, I guess that is enough "brown nosing" for now.   &bis& Tee..Hee..

. . . Come on Keith, keep on track and quit rambling.

Oh, another question I have for you.  You mentioned that I could turn off the game menus and the UCI mission's icon when I take a picture.  How do I do that and still take the picture?

Do you use the picture option in SC4?  When I use that and turn off the game menus, I lose the ability to take the picture.  I guess I don't know it works.

Any help would be appreciated, as usual.

Thanks Jeroni

Keith

keith => I usally take pics this way =>
Click on 'My sims' icon and toggle off the UDI icons
hit 'g' to toggle off the grid
hit numlock to hide the interface

either hit CTRL-SHIFT-S as MG said
or go to ST, in this thread  (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=355&threadid=83832) and grab clip2pic. Then you'll just have to hit printscreen ( the tool will save directly to jpeg and can resize to 800x600 )

Hi:

Here are some pictures of where I'm at with Slope City.  I'm a slow builder so I still have a lot of room to grow.  The demand for agriculture is way down so I think I'm going to bulldoze all the farms and put in industrial/commercial zones with a few residential areas.  I'm to the point where I'm getting high tech industries so I don't have to worry a lot about pollution.

The first two pictures are just an overall view from different angles.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg263.imageshack.us%2Fimg263%2F597%2Foverall7mw.jpg&hash=fb142781bb3f19120a173897f15e08d0dd74657e)

This next picture is one of the rural/farm areas.  I think this has go to go since demand is way down for agricultural zones and up for industrial/commercial.  This might make a nice industrial park.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg263.imageshack.us%2Fimg263%2F907%2Fclosercityfarm8zf.jpg&hash=608a0f09c5e908d14f75203c1cefb8c0c6c2cc79)

Still, a closer look at the farms.

Here is the beach in front of the farms. I think it turned out quite good.

Jeroni, do you know of any plopable aquatic plants mods that are around that I could download and put in my plugin folder?    I would really like to add some to this beach but I cannot find any on STEX, PEG or other sites. David mentioned one that he is using in ThreeRR but I cannot find it.

I've used the hilltop to place all my civic buildings.  I've got a university, a large elementary and high school, a large hospital, a large fire and police station, the mayors house, the church and the cemetery.

Here are some high rise residential buildings that showed up one day.  I think they looked alright so I kept them.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg263.imageshack.us%2Fimg263%2F8248%2Fclosesthighrise9kl.jpg&hash=8e570b709168f579a649843d31f24eb437401bcf)

I found some bus stops that I like and it looks like they are operating OK.

. . . Come on Ma! Warm up the bulldozer again and lets get to work on the farms.

Thanks guys for all your help and comments.

Keith

I'm definitely not jeronij, but I think I can help answer that question! You can find it at  Gizmos  (http://"gizmo.lunarpages.com") what you are looking for is his water flora mod!

Please note keithsed, I meant to mention this earlier, but my work shift was done.

In your folders, make sure the Water Flora Mod loads before your terrain mod. I think you're using a cycledogg mod. Dedgren figured this out in 3RR during it's ST days, if it loads after, you can't plop them under water!

R

Hello to all,

I am quite busy lately and I dont have all the time I would for this city, but here I am and I have some advices, until I can post some pics from my own  ;)
keithsed, I am glad you liked the streets side mod  ;D . I feel specially proud of this, because it makes to look even the Maxis buildings nice  $%Grinno$% !!!
Now, lets go for some constructive criticism.... ;)

I am not sure about the number, but when your city reach a determinated number of residents, the farming demand disspears. I dont know if there is something you can do against this  &mmm . This is a really annoying limitation, and it makes you lay your farms first at all, and then you can not add more. You can use the Radical Ordinance Mod, which allows to cheat the demand, and you can also play with your taxes to encourage farming demand, but at a certain point, no more farms will grow.

Now about realism....two suggestions:

Search the right place for every civic building. I mean, it is not very realistic ( at least where I live  ;) ) to have all the civic buildings in a row  $%Grinno$% . Too standar. Besides, half of the cover radius is lost in the woods behind the buildings. That place is nice and OK for schools and maybe a church but not for a police or firemen station. It is not well situated to cover the fartest emergencies.I would suggest to search a more convenient place for some of these buildings.

Try to keep the wealth in mind when creating your neighborhoods. Try to not mix high wealth and low wealth buildings. It does not happen in real life, and if you can do it this way, you will have more customized and with more personality neighborhoods.

I think the overall view pictures are really pleasant. I like the woods you place on the top of the hill

I`ll try to work a little bit with this city and post some pictures by the end of the week  ;)

Hi Jeroni:

Just take your time.  It's no fun to have to hurry SC4.   :)

I agree with you about the civic buildings.  I mentioned a while back that is where I placed them but I didn't like them there and it was only temporary.  Ha..Ha..  It seems like temporary has now become permanent.  I'll work on them.

You mentioned also mentioned about the placing the low density seperate from the high density housing to achieve better realism.  Maybe I didn't understand your prior post where you said:

"For 1x2 lots to show, check my pics where I show the residential layout before it grows. Notice that I placed 1 1X2 strip R-LD, 1 1x2 strip R-MD, and so on. This will avoid bigger than 1x2 lots to grow. Just a hint"

Maybe I should have placed a 2X2 or a 3X2 low density, followed by a blank tile (I could use it for a park or a bus stop) and then another 2X2 or a 3X2 low density.  Would this achieve the same effect that you mentioned above?  This would keep the low density separate from the high density, wouldn't it?

As always, your comments and VERY much appreciated.  I'm still a newbie.

Thanks.

Keith

Hello Keith, dont confuse density with wealth  ;)
In  my last post I was refering to low wealth and high welath mixed buildings.
The hint about the 1x2 strips works the way you mention also for bigger lot sizes. This is a good way to control the sizes of the buildigns you want to let show in a determinate place  ;D.

Thanks again Jeroni.  You're the man!

I'm going to owe you a lot for all your help when we finally finish this project.

Oh by the way, speaking of owing, I checked out the "make a donation" page on BSC LEX and it was in French.  I wanted to make a donation to this site for all the enjoyment it has given me but didn't feel comfortable doing it in a foreign language.

I didn't want to end up donating my house, family, dog and car to the site.   :D

Only kidding.  But I would like to help you out with something.  Let me know if there is a way I could do it in english.

Thanks

Hi:

Well, here are some pics after a couple of days work on Slope City.  Thanks Jeroni for the suggestions on my residential zones.  As usually your right and keep the comments coming.

Here are a couple pics of the low wealth residential zones.  They still aren't perfect but I think I'm getting there.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F8313%2Flowwealthres9ah.jpg&hash=5ae452d585a485cd7932a1e301deb1efe4f80fae)

and another one

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F1756%2Flowwealthres19hg.jpg&hash=312303d567c001ffa44943fc2421a066102bab71)

I also worked on the middle wealth residential zones.

. . . I see a rich old lady has moved in while I wasn't looking. Now I'm going to have to be the bad guy and evict her. :angrymore:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F5697%2Fmiddlewealthres3zm.jpg&hash=f1712f5530a99e66d8d80c7ac111633c5e95246e)

I've cleaned off the ridge.  I now call it Cemetery Ridge.  Usually in the USA, cemeteries are located in prime locations where the ghosts can rise up at night a look out over where they once were.  Boooooo

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F139%2Fcemetaryridge2ud.jpg&hash=d5b6b6e4ce3341e3a3149db9b06df293c95a9115)

Now that I've cleaned it off, except for the church, mayor's mansion, and the cemeteries, I don't know what to put in this prime real estate, located on top of the world, any suggestions? #?¿?¿?$

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F7195%2Funknownuse5mk.jpg&hash=0aa74590ca9943bdce7684d4d18ec69297ee5818)

Also last night I spent some time on "Da Beach," looking for long lost Simolieans with my metal detector.  I also heard that a glass bottle had washed up onshore after the last storm.  I was hoping it was the long lost treasure map we've all heard about, but no luck.  I think the kids got to it first. >:(

Anyway I did some fixing up.  The next two pics are overviews of where I spent some time.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F8158%2Fdabeach7li.jpg&hash=1b2e750b5a6715de682b9714b5fed3ef36965814)

And this one

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F4927%2Fdabeach17xn.jpg&hash=fe36ba9e5a2f1f361a51167686e63580e0767b66)

Here is a close up of Rocky Cove

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F6405%2Frockycove6fd.jpg&hash=ee9de3191fe2931dfc3e59f41586c51512ae5171)

Same area only a different view

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg260.imageshack.us%2Fimg260%2F8273%2Frockycove17we.jpg&hash=57439fa1f24e808e34f462f86fe3e33e12a077ad)

And moving further down the coast, here are the flats.  I think the beach could still use a little more fixing up, but I'll save that for another day.

And again at a different angle.

Now on to Traders Cove.  The only thing I saw down here last night were some wild teenagers having a party on the beach.  I wasn't invited so I left before it got too wild. You know my "old ticker" won't handle it any more. :satisfied:

And the end of the Cove

And finally the last one I call Suicide Cliffs.  A forlorn young lady threw herself off these cliffs after she heard that her lover had been killed in the war, or so the story goes. &ops

Well, like Bugsy used to say, "Dat's all folks." :D

Again any comments and helps would be appreciated.

Love this game.

Keith

I checked the BSC LEX again and noticed that the donation page is now in English.  Thanks.  I made use of it.

Sometimes a large wall appears on a necessary plop because of the slope. In order to hid the wall and improve the eye candy I'll leave a unzoned tile in front of a large wall for trees. But then you probably already know this, you little smarty you! ;D

Thank you for the nice comments.

Now back to Slope City.  It is really growing.  I've got to expand to the backside of the mountain or across the bay to the other side.

Hello, I'm Joe a newbe. Wow, this is fun. I'm having such a blast reading all your posts and trying to soak up all the information that I'm not practicing playing the game.    I want to congratulate you all for the great work you put in this. You are all very inspiring. Thanks. &apls &apls

QuoteIt is not well situated to cover the fartest emergencies.I would suggest to search a more convenient place for some of these buildings.

Are the fire trucks gas powered?  :D

Very nice job, Keith. I quite like how your Slope City is progressing.
