We want to see your highways and surrounding areas. Rural highways, interchanges, sunken highways, raised highways, and
anything else involving highways. I'll start with a couple of mine from my MD...
I-95 somewhere in North Carolina...

There, that should give us a good start. Alright, let's see some of yours!
That's a very nice variety you have shown so far. I would add some of my own (if I had any to really show) but I think that I may just have to start working on them now. Good idea for a thread.
Travis
Wow. The way you use the Maxis highways and the RHW is so realistic (especially in the limits of the game) Now I'm going to have to look at your MD, as I've never gone through it yet.
My only suggestion for you is to plop some trees between the highway and the houses in the 4th picture. Very few people want to live in plain sight of an Interstate.
As for some of mine:

Hey, good pictures! Those compliments mean a lot coming from you, as I'm familiar with both of your more recent MD's/CJ's.

Good idea, didn't think of that. Maybe because I
did live in plain sight of one for my first 13 years. :)
I'll have to come by and leave a comment at your MD sometime, and I'll keep a look-out for you at mine as well.
Well, it's been a little while (actually a month), so I figured I'd post a few more...

Wow, that last picture is absolutely stunning, Travis! Excellent use of the RHW!
Really like the last picture. To bad there aren't any diagonal farm fields out there that could be plopped. ()sad() Someone should make those. :P

It would be interesting to know what do you think about it? It's from one of my older cities and there isn't any new stuff here.
1. General view (Jordan Gallery is on the North).
East - West: A1, to the South: A2
Outside lanes: transit East-West
Inside lanes: beginning of A2
Outside lanes along A2: exit to the center

4. Detail - beginning of A2 and diagonal exits to the city (to the north and south - the same solution is on the opposite side of A1, near west border of the city). I used short blue tunnels to hide transitions from one kind of road to another (i don't like these transitions)

Wow! These are some beautiful highway set-ups that everyone has going on here! Great work, everybody!
ennedi yeah thats a great junction. both functional and realistic having bypass lanes on the main highway, also the feeder lanes to the gallery. i have something similiar in my next update.
Wow, lots of good pics everyone! Ennedi, I love that setup. Must have been very difficult to build. Mightygoose, I really like that interchange,
great use of the onslope pieces. Keep the great pics coming everyone!

mightygoose - great thing... I didn't investigate every path on this junction, but I'm sure it is absolutely functional...
Would you like to think about putting some signs here? As I remember, signs on British highways were clear and they leaded me very well ;)

Its not like anything gets built in our country anyways with all the environmental hippies.
Ill take some more screenshots tonight.
haha :) My interchanges arent so perfect it seems, will need to rebuild a bit of the big Y interchange.
If someone could make a custom interchange like this would be perfect.

Comments? :)
Comments? With pleasure :D
1. Try to soften transitions from flat terrain downhill to the slope (highway and avenue on the first pic)
2. This highway interchange (2nd pic) is difficult to use - it looks ugly very often (I don't know why... %wrd). The same about the NAM transition from elevated highway to the ground one - especially from the direction as on your picture (top left corner).
2.1 Try to remove this transition and make your own (as on your first pic)
2.2 Don't make curves such close to this interchange - it will look more elegant
Don't be angry of my criticism - when I was a child, my parents used to say "there are more requirements for more talented people" - I didn't like it at all... :D)
Thanks for taking the time to critique my pictures- constructive criticism never hurt anyone. :)
1- I must have spent an hour trying to do just that, I tried every trick in my book, such as trying to use the rail tool to soften the grade, but
nothing worked. :(
2- Indeed, that interchange is very ugly, but such are many american freeways, and I'm going for realism, ugly or not. ;) And yes, it's a rather
weird bug that occurs on that transition, but...
2.1- space becomes an issue here.
2.2- I agree, but I had little choice, space was once again an issue. :( I'll see what I can fix though.
Once again, thanks for your comments, my friend. :)
Welcome to page 3!
Great pictures, Travis! A wonderful simple overpass! ;)
Looking good, there, Travis! I do agree that the interchange in the second picture is an ugly interchange, but like Ennedi pointed out, it's a tough one to use because it's often ugly looking. The first picture is my favorite, though. I love how you have the avenue crossing above the sunken railraods, then crossing beneath the highway. It looks fantastic. Great work, my friend!

There are a few tutorials around for making sunken highways. You have to download certain lots to make the highway walls.
To answer the question you asked yourself, SC4D hasn't been around for years, so it wasn't possible :D
Superb sunken highway figui

@Danthe - great work with this highway!
The general view is excellent, slopes are carefully terraformed, sharp angles softened - very good!
The exit looks very good, it's not too big, light towers are very good addition here
Very good idea with the brownish rural stone wall, it blends very well with surrounding farmfields  I see the upper edge of this wall was carefully terraformed too ;)
Closeups are very nice too, I like the rail viaduct
My suggestion about the first picture: I think it would be better to:
- move the road viaduct at least one tile away from the highway curve
- make the viaduct at least on tile longer (make a transition a bit away from he highway)
- don't make a road curve just at the transition
Why? Because you have too many lines at various angles in one point, it damages the perspective and look a bit strange (I know it is caused by the nature of these pieces, but they were designed to save space, and you have enough space to do this viaduct a bit larger
But anyway everything is very good done &apls
Here is a sneak peak from me of things to come...

Haljackey: nice multi-rhw. signals really give a touch.
Okay, I hope that teaser prepared you for this!
Here are a dozen different highway networks I have created in multiple cities. They do their job quite well in moving traffic from one place to another. Some of them are for local traffic, others long distance, and some include a bit of both.
Anyways, FYI, these are all RAW images taken from the game. They are not "photoshopped" in any way. The only editing done to them was to change their format from .png images to .jpeg format.
Also note that they have been compressed significantly to comply with site regulations. Below each image, there will be a link that will direct you to the uncompressed, full resolution image (11 images are 1440x900, the other is a "unique" 1280x1024 image).
But enough of that. Here they are, and I hope you enjoy them!

my latest multi lane highway attempt. this is one of the busiest intersections in my city, something like where the NJ turnpike and GS parkway meet, but its a t inersection, not a full cloverleaf.. and without tolls!! this is just early progress in converting my maxis segments -> rural highway multilane segments, next is for a full cloverleaf.. should be a a doozey!

Awesome work, dogma. Some smooth curves could be an interesting addition though.
Full clovers aren't really that hard as they may seem.
@Dogma, That is one intense highway system!! :D

Beautiful highways all!
Great couple of intersections there, pagenotfound!
This interchange connects a bypass (coming from the west
), an avenue (Upgraded to RHW in most of this pic, enters from north and leaves west, before turning south again outside of the pic), and a main expressway (the straight north/south road). Downtown is to the north, so my original plans didn't include the southern portion of the avenue, or access for northbound traffic on the expressway to get to the avenue. (There isn't much, besides a mall, between this and the next exit on that avenue, and the avenue is easily reached at that next exit.) But when I developed more to the south, I thought I'd put it in. This manages complete access to everything with only one light. This is a pretty cool interchange, if I do say so myself (and I do).

Great Pic Dan,
Do you have a more zoomed out version? I'm interested in the rest of your well-designed area there.
Also.. and I know this is not really the right place to ask it, but I've been looking for about 3 weeks now for those sidewalk textures but I can't seem to find them.
It it Jernoij's mod or should I look elsewhere?
well, this is not actually a highway, but it soon will be one. Enjoy my construction site!

Do you have a more zoomed out version? I'm interested in the rest of your well-designed area there.
For that particular area, that is the only developed parcel that I have. That'll soon be changed, though.

Actually, that is the SMP Sandstone Sidewalk Mod. I don't know the reason, but the file is locked on the LEX, but can be found on the STEX here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=17323). Hope that helps!

Dan, That's perfect!
Thanks!
Excellent not-yet-highway, Feliwi!
Here's two of mine; an insane interchange I built and still can't figure out how to untangle:-[ and another which is a elevated-to-sunken transition that looks fairly attractive, I think.

great images Rusummer! You have some big highways there
Thanks ^^ One of my highways in that city is 9 lanes one way with over 112,000 commuters, not including freight trucks and buses.
those highways look great rusummer. its nice to see huge highways with a steady stream of traffic. you might want to do some tree trimming in the one pic though
Wow!! Where did you get those highway mast lights (In the last picture) and the straight and diagonal gantry signs (In most of the pictures)?
Those are some wicked highways!
I think my brain needs a break when seeing those pics $%Grinno$% Excellent work, rusummer!
(By the way, I've never seem someone else using my RHW median lights, high tension lines and my Dutch signage pack)
Best,
Maarten
thanks everyone ;D jmdude1 haha yea I know. Floydian the mast lights are mrtnrln's here http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=21034 and the signs are a mix of mrtnrln's, http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=21592 and http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=21780
Wrong lights my friend, I meant the darker ones that are really tall in the middle-left of the last picture :)
Floydian: I think those are one the STEX too but I looked and can't seem to find them.
It's been a while since I played SC4 last time, but hopefully, I'm getting back slowly. A decent start, I guess:

Some really nice looking freeways and some odd looking ones as well. Great job everyone
Hey driftmaster....
I think the southern bridge of your rhw is the wrong way, but looks good though.
@soulchaser: Nah, I don't think it is, actually.
Meanwhile, I do have something to contribute:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg193.imageshack.us%2Fimg193%2F456%2Fsenatoriatrumpet.jpg&hash=e96a40086e8aa0a9f403d1d53dea043835444237) (http://img193.imageshack.us/i/senatoriatrumpet.jpg/)
This actually took a lot longer to do than it looks! I'd forgotten how finicky the pieces can be with regard to where they'll let you plop them. Still, I'm pretty happy with the result. The proposed extension to the Central Motorway to the bottom of screen is going to be a bugger of a job, though. (keep in mind that this tile will be the main CBD area for the whole region.

Nice one, Peter! I really like that roundabout, you gave me some ideas ;)
I have to agree with io_bg, that is an excellent use of the RHW imho.
It's so good in fact, that I *may* have to steal it for Senatoria (the current region I'm working on).
Good job!
Impressive roundabout you have there peter. Fantastic work on that &apls Gives a me a few ideas as well

It's been a while since I played SC4 last time, but hopefully, I'm getting back slowly. A decent start, I guess:

Maxis terrain and water? No, not a decent start :P
Maybe I should offset that with some pictures of my own before I criticise (jokingly, to be sure) ;D

Maybe you should put up your glasses first as well. ;) It's not Maxis water, but the good old water mod by joerg, and I also used one of Cycledogg's terrain mods, and a mod that replaces the Maxis trees with Cycledogg's. The only Maxis item here is the highway with the bridge.
I think your highway looks amazing Andreas. It looks so smooth and cool!

How did you make all your Maxis highway pieces black? On mine the highway is black, but many of the NAM pieces have grey chunks that look aweful. How can I fix that?

Have you put the highway restyling mod in a "zzz" folder? The problem could also be because that mod isn't updated to include the intersections from the newest NAM.

Time to get another traffic controller. A controller with perfect pathfinding would probably solve it. Otherwise you might want to consider building more exits and entrances to the highway ;)

Hey, Maxis highways can still look cool when done right. You can mask their unrealistic appearance by adding supportive features around them like dense development.

Man, you really have to work on your slopes! They are awfully steep now. But other than that, the picture looks great!
I agree about the slopes, also you could've used FAR pieces instead of two S curves.
I love those clouds on that picture, but as everyone said, those slopes are way too steep
I've been doing some major upgrades to a highway in a island city of mine. It's a dense, popular tourist and business destination. As the population of this medium city tile doubled from 150-300k, it called for some major reconstruction of the highways connecting the islands/peninsulas together.
This is Highway 8, the orbital route around the island. The twisting, bumpy, 2 lane road was the only connection between these communities. The fragile ground simply couldn't support a 4 lane road.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg802.imageshack.us%2Fimg802%2F7766%2Fcoolshallowsoct11421289.jpg&hash=2dd7cee817d5d26a74da4837b4259bcb117c6d75)
...Unless some major infill happened. The new 4 lane connection opened up this overly congested artery.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg25.imageshack.us%2Fimg25%2F2849%2Fcoolshallowsmay21211129.jpg&hash=effb2176c3f018bde5f620952b907e78a4881044)
Oh, and Original, nice work, but as others mentioned, you need to work on your slope. Getting a slope mod would take your highways to the next level!
LOLWUT you demolished my building :bomb: :angrymore:
:D :D
I have the R.H.W. mod to built more flexible constructions, but I'm also a big fan of the Maxis speedways. A typical highway takes too much space and can easily destroy the environment by many ways. An elevated speedway however can make much less damage.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg696.imageshack.us%2Fimg696%2F8859%2Ffuturisticspeedway.jpg&hash=27783c47a5ef197c403036ea9555ef044012cfd7)
The elevated speedway allows animal migration and cuts less trees for the construction. It also has barriers that prevent the birds to get hit by cars and reduces to minimum the light and sound pollution.
Hope that you like it :)

I'd like to keep the intersections thread for interesting non-highway/expressway/etc. grade pictures, but yeh. Just my meddling 2 cents~
There's some real ncie work here!
My motorways never really get past the RHW-4 stage, but I've been experimenting with some new intersections... some of which I will show in the intersections thread, merger pending of course.
Here's an older one. Originally built through dense bushland, the town has grown around it and those soundwalls have stifled any plans for upgrades.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Fjdenm8%2Fflatwoodcj%2Fentry23%2Fjohannasburge-21_oct.__1771291253964.jpg&hash=e0a1fa831e0f9d458f2d41398ccb35e4609c4825)
You can also catch a glimpse of RHW-3 in the top left corner...
Yeah, I learned the hard way not to place the soundwalls that close to the RHW. &dd Next time I'll leave a row of one or two tiles in between.

Yeah leaving an extra tile or two between the RHW and soundwalls or any other developments is a good practice. Maybe leave another tile free near interchanges for accel/decel lanes or any other modifications that need to be done for future widening.
Also, building your RHW with a a grassy median 1-2 tiles wide will also enable you to widen your highway without needing much more right of way.

That's another good idea. Currently I leave a median one-tilerow wide for trees & lightposts.
I was following the practices of Motorway construction here in the eighties.
Build four-lanes wide, sell the land right up to the hard shoulder, stick soundwalls alongside, add 20 years, Traffic Hellhole!
Ohh, so you did it on purpose....?
Here's a video of Highway 8, the route I showed improvements on in the previous page.
The highway forms a partial ring-road system on a tropical island and is an expressway for the majority of it's length. It's showcased for most of the video.

Sorry, that needed to be fixed.
Although we don't generally build above ground these days, we tunnel... and run in to the same problems 5 years later, except that it's even more expensive to fix. :P

In marsh's picture, why are the cars going the wrong way? Did anyone else noticed that? I love the water texture and the trees btw.

Technically, they're not going the wrong way. Marsh plays the game in LHT (UK) mode.
Ah HA! I noticed something!
Level your terrain a bit more so the entire width of the road is visible.

I'm so mean. $%Grinno$% Great work Marsh! :)
@jacksunny
You're city looks great. You're sunken highway looks nice too. There was one thing that bothered me: you had some slopes in there that were almost certainly steeper than 45 degrees. This slope mod (or any other slope mod you might prefer)
http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=33 will make those sections look more realistic. I think it's the same one I'm using, but I'm not sure. All I remember is that the one I'm using came with several different files so I could choose how extreme I wanted the smoothing. You're use of frontage roads is cool too. I've always wanted to use those in a city, but I build a lot like my local traffic civic planners: right up to the road with no thought for the future.
@marsh It looks really good. Kind of reminds of I-70 in the United States as it goes through Glennwood Canyon West of Denver, Colorado. The scenery is very different, but the way one side of the highway is higher than the other, and even ducks under the other side in narrow spots is similar. Is there any chance of us getting a picture of the same spot looking in from the ocean? Please. :D
Opkl: As jdenm said I play the game in [Left Hand Drive] mode. ;)
Haljackey: Lol. ::) Actually that is not the game. I plopped a traffic generator there so that there is actually traffic on the roads. And the only way to make it not-ugly was to photoshop it out. :P Just a mistake in photoshop is all. :D
Kevin1a: Thats where some of the inspiration comes from. I've driven that road a few times. :)
I think the lines are obvious photo editing, it gets narrow then normal in that left lane, not to mention the yellow line getting blury then fading into the pavement, but looking at jacksunny's palms, then marsh's, the trees look a lot more detailed, I suspect some contrast/brightness/color altering?
You guessed it. ::) My resolution is at 1920 pixels wide. So re-sizing them to 1024 makes it a lot nicer.

It takes a real road-geek to make an association like that from one picture in a pixely video game from 2003. I think my obsession might be getting out of control. ;D

It was originally an avenue, but luckily I managed to buy up and raze the adjacent land before the super high density development moved in. Nevertheless, any future congestion will probably have to go un-alieviated.

I think you could fit a 6C/8C in there. It would be tight, but it would work.
Nah, with the space you've got there, you will be able to go right up to RHW-10S, you'd just have to rotate the soundwalls so they're on the other side (and probably get rid of the tree props on the LOTs).

Huge monitor??? :P
No wonder when I try to make mine like yours, it never shows up as the same quality.
My monitor is 1920 too, but I run it at a lower resolution so the game doesn't lag on my aging system. Bought the monitor super cheap off a friend of my brother. Perhaps I should start upping the resolution when I take pictures.
You're right, I could probably fit a wider road in there, but it might cause some issues with the ramps that you can't see in that picture. Also, I have a policy of using only entry and exit pieces that allow room for merging unless absolutely necessary. In my RHW (might be out of date, I should check) these pieces really only exist for RHW4 turning it into an RHW6S when adding a lane and back into a RHW4 when losing a lane. Otherwise I would be using the RHW6C already because I think the jersey barriers in the middle look more like an urban highway than the RHW6S does.
Good news Kevin1a! ;D Ramps with merging lanes do exist for RHW 8C/6C (8C after MIS joins, 6C on other side). There also the big RHW 8S/6C+MIS piece and the RHW 6C/4+MIS piece (if you don't mind left hand exits and entrances). Great looking highway again, BTW &apls
 Fantastic! Are they included by default in the latest RHW or do I have to download some kind of expansion pack? And more importantly, and I know it annoys many of you: do they come in Eurotextures?
They should be in the next RHW and they might have Euro textures, they might not. It greatly depends on whether we have the time.

Yeah, I drive there a lot, it is very similar, except for, you know, the ocean and whatnot ;D
Ryan (Haljackey): Nice RHW, as always. I await more road videos from that hillside metropolis of yours. What do you call it, anyway?
lol Ryan, the 'Big Boy' looks great ;D
I particularly like "Double the Lanes," through as a traffic nerd I have to say I'm appalled that US/Canada style road signs can coexist with Eurostyle directional signs. :D The "Big Boy is good too. I like the dynamic traffic control monitors over the roadway.

If we can imagine electric and hydrogen cars, that are more quiet and environmental friendly, a house in the highway makes sense ;D

Sure it's creative but, not all things creative are nice. I don't lie, I don't like it. But I'm not trashing the person and their playing skills either. Just voicing my negative comment as nice as possible, at least tired too.

From another angle:

Another exit, one with the very cool avenue exit pieces:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1204.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb419%2Fswm666%2FPSC%2Fdoubledeck4.jpg&hash=4e34ccf4324d54d2eb02709ad65e5eadaa58802b)
I love the minimal width this network takes up (exits fit on three tiles), but there's a sacrifice in ramp length, of course, which limits the number of exits you can fit in. Overall, it has (as per usual RHW standards), a very realistic look.
Awesome pics, very realistic  I'm downloading them on my PC right now to use them as inspiration source later on when I play the game :D

Neat recreation! You gonna turn it into an MD?
I think I know where that's at.... Isn't "The Collector" between Castle Rock and Denver? I remember making that drive several times. It's funny going north on I-25, becos' once I cross over that ridge, BAM! Denver is right there!
Kinda sorta. It's a mix of the I-25 and I-225 interchange and the whole T-REX project area along I-25 starting at I-225 to about Santa Fe and I-25. I get most of my ideas from there, and the City of Denver.
I would just like to say, that this city project I'm working on is based on a map of Denver and I'm trying to make it look like Denver, but with my own stuff in it too, Again, a lot of my stuff is inspired by the City of Denver.
By the way, I would like to thank Nine Inch Nails for helping me think of what to call my interchange. They have a song called "The Collector" and I was listening to it when trying to come up with a nickname.
This is my acces to the airport. I hope you like.

Wah, that's pretty close between the avenue on/off-ramp and the junction. They don't have much time to weave.... Otherwise, not bad.

Yes, that's a very dangerous stretch of weaving going on there! You might try to move the ramps to the other side of the interchange unless you don't care.

Yes, it depends on which way you drag it. If you start with RHW, and drag a road out of it, you get a TLA-5, but if you start with an AVE-6, you drag out a RHW-6C.
... unless I mixed that up. I remember seeing a post on here about that, but I don't have time to look it up right now. I'm sure you'll figure it out once you play around with it.

Beautiful elevated SPUI! I want one! Are you using the on-slope Avenue transition? If so, when I tried to do this, I couldn't get the turning lane on the on-slope piece. How'd you build that?
I would love to know how that is done as well, please.

There is a new On-Slope TuLEP for avenue turning lanes. I believe it's at the end of the TuLEP tab cycle of I'm not mistaken. It will allow you to create FLEX-SPUI creations like kassarc's creation.
I've been working on a highway system in a new city. Here's a short video showing it's design and how it interacts with other roads and highways within the right of way.

Actually, there's a TuLEP On-slope at the very end of that Tab ring.

Thanks for the replies regarding my interchange! For those who need help, I suggest you read my post from Simtropolis, as quoted below:
QuoteBegin with digging a 15m deep, 3 tile wide trench (assuming your using RHW6 or another network that takes up 3 tiles). Place the 3 tile network down the trench, just drag it. Using a slope mod (I use Ennedi's), drag 1x2 tile long strips of road covering the sloped side of the trench and the flat tile 15m above that sloped side. You should do this along the whole trench, both sides, leading to the sloped side of the 15m deep trench being 2 tiles wide (2 tiles slope to for the 15m trench sides instead of just one steep side like you would have started with). Every 14 tiles (13 tile-wide gap between both pieces), plop a 1x1 piece of road on the upper side of the trench slope, this should leave you with something like the following:
____
.......\___
..............\______
The red part should be 15m above the green, with the blue part being approx. 7.5 above the green. It should be half the height of the total trench. Leave 3 tiles placed at total trench height (15m) in the the center between the two tiles at 7.5m From the middle of these three tiles, place a RHW2 T-intersection on-slope elevated piece and connect it to the other side so you have an overpass over the sunken RHW6 at the bottom of the trench, 15m below of course. Now, back to the 7.5m area. With a slope mod installed still, connect this 7.5m area with road to the 15m high area, resulting in a nice smooth slope between the 7.5m area and the overpass intersection at 15m. On the slope between the flat area at 7.5 and the flat 15m area on one side of the T-intersection for the T-intersection On-slope RHW2 piece, place a FARHW4 inside exit. This should result in the puzzle piece conforming to the exact shape of the slope, the inside exit piece should not alter the slope in any way. Now just plop the RHW6 FARHW exit pieces so they connect with the inside exits.
Hopefully this is helpful, I did my best to explain it. I will also attempt making a video, as it's really the best way to understand how this process works.
I agree with the above posts, your method of construction is very useful Bipin! Have you considered adding it to the RHW interchange guide? I'd be more than happy to assist you if you have any questions.
I've been working on adding it to the guide, as it was suggested a little while ago actually. I am considering doing a video tutorial, as it's really the best way to under stand how to build this interchange. Will a video be ok to use in the guide?

I don't see why one road can't keep going deeper like that--makes sense to me and I wouldn't sink one of the tunnels. It's not like the game creates an intersection in the middle. Also, since an avenue tunnel entrance is ~8m high if you were going to sink one I don't see the point in sinking it 30m.

Ah the errors of the game. As progress on the RHW front advances, we will end up seeing a 'third level' MIS added along with overpasses which are half the height they are now (7.5m instead of 15m).
Due to these limiting factors, a true stack is still quite hard to pull off, with the exception of the ground-elevated highway stack.
I'll make sure to add some sort of commentary. Not sure exactly what I'll do though, as the voice of an adolescent doesn't sound too good through a mic. Thanks for the tips Haljackey.
Bipin, I know what you mean ;D I'm having difficulty narrating something for my MD, because my voice comes out all weird. If you fix it, would you let me know what you did?
Luckily, being a veritable old man of 26 years now, my voice has de-weirded. :D I'd recommend picking up some sort of Wave Editor program, however--Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is a long-time favorite of mine. Using a High Pass Filter and some compression (or even the Change Pitch feature, if you're really inclined--though if you go more than a half step out, hilarity may ensue) might help.
Bipin, I'm intrigued by what you have there. Might have to play around with it myself.
And for those wondering on the stack front, I can confirm that all this "Project 0E" business that has been referenced in the RHW thread is related to the integration of multi-level networking, as well as greatly increasing stability.

What is every one talking about? On that show "The Adventures of Finn and Jake", the guy is clearly voiced by a kid, and he does not even have a dropped voice, and thats on television. That is an example that casting directors seem to accept without dropping.
I'm planning a new region and because I'm not familiar with the RHW, I made a highway interchange to know the RHW a little better.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg841.imageshack.us%2Fimg841%2F1585%2Fvbforum002.png&hash=2df578939f9b3671771430de30f03868cb755595)
This is the junction. The text shows where the highway goes to. I made the directions heading to the ring roads RHW-4, because they will be extra busy. Because it's a busy urban junction, I made it as compact as possible. And because there isn't an rhw-6 exit with a turning RHW-4 (I don't know how you say that in english), I used the RHW-6 A2/B2 exit pieces (is there another better workaround?).
Does it look realistic and does anybody have tips to make it more realistic?
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg90.imageshack.us%2Fimg90%2F8027%2Fvbforum003.png&hash=b5e02ff2c27d15e3c9a01ed03a3bdfe4d1bb14d9)
I'm also facing a problem when I plop lane reduction pieces. Sometimes when I plop a piece, it faces the opposite direction. Does anybody know a solution?
@Koenieboy997
Great interchange you've made there . Regarding the lane reduction arrows, you'll find that the tab ring contains a version for the left lane ending and another for the right lane ending, as well as versions with the block markings. Maybe you're confusing them as they appear similar in the preview.
Note the difference between the exit arrows (left at the picture below) and the lane reduction arrows (right):
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg694.imageshack.us%2Fimg694%2F2831%2Fcustomarrows.jpg&hash=dcd4f8df89f54c07c965bf2cb359a664944d8150)
The lane reduction arrow shows that a lane will soon end, so you have to change lanes. Exit arrows show that the road splits in several directions.
Best,
Maarten
@Dexter That's not the problem. I also tried to plop the wrong direction first and then plop the right direction, but it didn't work out. Sometimes I also get the problem I can't view the preview of an item, and have to drag it around and then sudden it appears. Is that a similar problem?
I like the style of the arrows, Maarten, but aren't they just a bit too large? I've been looking at some RL examples in wikimapia and they all measure 8m at most, while yours appear to take up an entire tile. I could be wrong, though.

I know it was a fake photo, but the way parts of California are expanding, that could be a reality some day, especially around LA where they desperately need more highway lanes
But my last point is true, they have been wanting to extend a 2 lane road only 3 miles in my area since 1982(yes almost 30 yrs now), and they did an environmental study in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1993, 2001, 2005, and in 2009 (those results are still pending 2 yrs later), and every time that was done, they found a reason not to extend the road(the best one was the fact that a species of turtle would not be able to migrate to mate, even though the proposed extension would be a floating bridge or a 4 ft high bridge all the way through as the area is basically a marsh. The state bought the easements in 1982 for all 3 miles, and also for 10 additional miles where the road already is(for expansion to 4 lanes with turn lanes/drive around lanes where needed) as well, and the environmental report finds nothing to stop that from occurring, but the state cannot widen it unless the extension is done because all the money for that has been allocated since 1983, and money has also been allocated in 1986, 1990, 1997, and 2006 to keep up with the costs. What was going to cost $4.6 million in 1983, is now going to cost $17.4 million(allocated so far is $13.6 million, but the county is covering the rest), all because idiots find a BS reason to stop a road from being built. The county needs that road to be extended/widened big time as truck traffic has increased and that road is horrible at shift change times at the mills, as it is only 1 of 2 roads in the county that goes North to South for as long as it does, and the western portion of the county needs a major North/South route desperately.
Meanwhile, they spend millions of federal money on bridges in my state that ultimately end up under used.

Yep same here. People want them to rebuild Cline Avenue in Lake County, even though when it was built in the 1970's it was to handle twice as many vehicles as it did when it was closed a year or so ago due to shoddy maintenance and building material.

Nice use of the double decker, one of these days I am gonna play with that one
Definitely give it a go, it's a great little tool for when your city is gridlocked and space is at a premium. No double decker intersections though which is a shame, hence why mine is just a straight line from the highway north to Bay City through Downtown New Leon then ending just as Followill Industrial Park is reached.
I think i am gonna love this thread. Now, coming to my region, i had to connect the bypass around Lenin'sk (my core city of 220k people :P) with the freeway going north. The problem is the connection had to be made in an area that already was developed, the northern suburb of Strela. There was only one way to connect the two freeways without destroying half Strela...

The interchange was made by 2 T styled ones, nearby a mountain, causing no little environmental issues.
nice use of MHW. Also like the tunnel just after the interchange, well done
@ Gurning_Chimp: I'm gonna have to try the DD-RHW4 as well... Nice use of it there
@ Sojuz: Reminds me of so many junctions in my regions! I also use "Double-Ts" in place of cloverleafs, sometimes with an extra "T" for ultra-compactness AND local access - "Triple-T"! Yours looks great :D

Makes a great bypass(or Express lanes) though, which is probably what I would use it for.
It'd be easier to use if the lower deck was at L1...

Exactly, hence why I used it as an expressway through the city centre.

Then we could put elevated road and avenue in between, shortening ramp length; the L2 to L3 MIS ramp piece is effectively useless compared to the other three ramps...

Not particularly, you can have that ramp go off and attach to an elevated roadway else where or it will create a ramp that is a bit shorter when used with the normal elevated ramp.

I beg to differ. See my previous pictures (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=1047.msg397037#msg397037) for an example.
I think the reasoning behind the L2/L3 deck setup on the DDRHW will make more sense once L1 networking is implemented.

I recently got the Starbucks corner with apartments on top addition, when I loaded in Bay City, no joke. Starbucks popped up

On a more serious note, the only other DDRHW currently planned is a DDRHW-8 . . . mainly as it splits nicely into two DDRHW-4s.

Thanks mate, also, do you need to build the tunnel on the surface first then sink the water, or is there another method for this? I hear you can use subway tunnels as road tunnels on some lots. Is the trashy avenue one of these?
Great pic, Arthur
Gurning Chimp, these lots convert the road traffic to subway so there's no need to raise or lower the terrain. You have to do that only if you're using Maxis' tunnels.

Apparently not UDI (for obvious reasons). I'm going to be trying ILL_TONKSO's underground motorway tunnel mod once it's downloaded, I'll report back and tell you lot if that one works.
It doesn't seem to, however that maybe because I put the tunnels too close together, allowing for a subway connection. Maybe if I don't allow the lines to touch, they'll work.

That shouldn't matter, I have put two 1x1 substops next to each other before and both had usage(one was to relieve crowding from an overused one). I have done the Big Dig lots with two near each other and both worked

Does length of the tunnel matter? I had a fairly long tunnel.
No, I had a city once where it was an island and I had the big dig go underground right after the neighbor connection and go all the way to the other side and come up to a neighbor connection and had the offramps on the island and they took it

They just need to completely overhaul the tunnel system it seems.
By the way, ILL_TONKSO's tunnel only transports pedestrians.
Very nice work art128! It does in fact remind me of that tunnel under Tokyo Bay.

Nice combination of both MHW and RHW Haljackey. I love your video's and pictures because you do such an awesome job on things(so do others as well).
PS I hope you really don't drive like that in real life, that poor little mini car getting pushed into the arrow sign was just mean :)
MHW is sooo underrated. Heck, I use it all the time - Only becos' I haven't learned how to make all those fancy RHW interchanges yet.

That's what I said when I started on SimCity... I've just (unintentionally!) scrapped my Timbuktu region, so my new one will be RHW from the ground up. ???
Thanks guys!
Never underestimate Maxis highways. They can look terrific in certain scenarios, although I admit I rarely use them anymore. In the video I showed a ground highway climbing hilly terrain with lots of curves before entering an urban area. Once you enter a city they become more difficult to make them look good, so I usually switch to RHW :P.
Many classify the Maxis Highway as a grade 'b' highway, 1 below RHW. This makes little sense from the game's mechanical standpoint, but in realism and game appearance it does.

Haljackey, if you drive like that in the Netherlands you would get ticketed you know. Unnecesary driving on the left. ;D

My main issue with MHW is the fact that they have barriers on the sides, where no interstates where I live have concrete walls off the shoulders when they are on the ground. Plus you have to destroy buildings and roads to plop an interchange in when laying one, where with RHW, you still have destroy some, but you can squeeze interchanges in to fit the surroundings better. Also you can use RHW as a bypass far easier than MHW because you can easily make street connections to it(I live near a 4 lane state highway that has at grade intersections with or without traffic lights on them), where with MHW you can't do that.
Like Haljackey states, MHW still has uses in the game, but RHW has taken over a majority of the uses for it to me.
Quote from: Risu on November 22, 2011, 12:17:15 AM

Perhaps a grade 'c' highway would be a RHW with intersections instead of interchanges (expressway rather than freeway).
-It could also be a RHW or Maxis Highway without smooth curves and/or steep slopes. Interchanges could be very tight and not up to standards (like no merging room or weaving).
It all really depends on the player. That's what makes this game so interesting. There is no universal standard (unlike Real Life), and that's why we all like to look at creations from others.
Great video, Haljackey! Also nice work on the highways!!!
I like using both M.H.W. and R.H.W., as well as mixing them . The original highways are very simple in construction and very futuristic-looking, especially with some extra stuff ;D. My favourite Real highway is the double decker, because it's space saver and very futuristic ;D. I have an idea about how to use them both, but my C.D. drivers refuse to read any C.D.-R.O.M., including Simcity :'(. I'll show you some examples when the problem fix :)

It's very good! But it looks so underutilised....
Might be in a growing city and traffic will increase over time. Thats why when I lay my highways, I always leave enough room on both sides to expand if need be. I actually had a city once where I ended up having a RHW-10 maxed out and had to build an elevated RHW-4 in the median as express lanes to relieve the pressure off of the RHW-10

Makes sense to me. I usually will widen over time but this time I just decided to go for it. I did include an extra tile on both sides on the overpass for a future C/E system though, so there's still work that can be done.

Yep but its tried and true proven to work method. I used to do that when I didn't want a long bridge leading to islands, so I would fill in the river, and create the tunnel, and then dig the river out again

I seen those around Southern California which they're called "Emergency Bus Sized Stop".
I don't get it! There is a full emergency lane alone the RHW-4. But a emergency stopping bay for a NNW road network or the ORW looks like a good idea to my.

Where I live we have similar lanes in the really hilly areas...they are not for stopping though, they are to allow for heavier, slower vehicles to use as hill climbing lanes so that lighter, faster cars are not delayed in these areas.

If they are trees, not lots, that you placed after starting the city then they are MMPs, regardless of whether they were created by Maxis or someone else more recently. So you do use MMPs, which is a good thing.

Keeps the NIMBY's happy ;)
Next to my highways, when space allows, I typically have:
1 tile of open grass area. Signs/lights can also be here. Also allows for easy future expansion within the existing right of way.
1 tile of forest plops. Reduces pollution
1 tile of sound walls. Reduces traffic noise and the 'landmark' effect increases land value for zones near the highway.
Looks great  Those 3-tile networks always look so nice!

Probably because the FAR intersection pieces are right up against the overpass. Leaving a one tile gap should resolve the problem, it looks like you've space to do that easily too.
I have a city that has 2 tiles in SC4... guess its good way to compare the old with the new

^^@hal: Looking good, though IMO that MISxAvenue intersection in the new version kinda unnecessary since the traffic from smaller road in top left could just go to the intersection instead.

But some very well made roads :)

ah Haljackey. I love your driving videos. By them, I get a feeling of how big SC4 regions actually get. They are not just nice looking, but become very impressive regarding the fact that the flyby scenery is built by yourself. :)
idk where to post this but anyway, let me know what everyone think about this concept/picture
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpuu.sh%2Fw7Gcp.jpg&hash=e844d59a310fbbec5b2c921ae9bbc3bbc86f7189)
I really like it. :) The only thing that strikes me is that where I live, we would probably run the light rail line on the ground. In this case I think it would be easier to take the light rail under the road overpass than over it. However, I know that in other parts of the world it is much more common to put infrastructure on pillars.
Thanks for the though. Well I think it much more how it looks like in your part of world... as it here the newest under construction light rail currently built as an elevated viaduct in side of highway where that picture is inspired by.
If the elevated runway was built longer, the track might look better. I like the building mix! You have a lot of traffic! I like this so much in your MD :)
While this is a wonderful and busy scene, Themistokles is right on rather having the rail under the overpass on the same level as the highway, instead of leading over it, since rails don't like sudden and steep slopes like this at all (surely, cars driver neither, but they can cope much better). $%Grinno$%
I actually like the idea of the overpass and the elevated railroads. And since this is based on your part of the world, I say leave it as it is  . My only recommendation is to make the upper part of the railroad overpass a little longer, maybe at least one tile from both sides, so the train will not have to go up and down right immediately. Or you might want to make the entire railroad that high, not only the overpass part ;D
Thank you for the like and feedback, Dantes, praiodan, and Terring7 ! The slope problem is noted, I might just create longer high part or even just put a long part double height to avoid such problem. Unfortunately I haven't plan anything by using this concept. The area does functional but the light rail basically just that piece to demonstrate an idea that I might use. so yeah I might use this concept in future updates but just not now...
IIRC there isn't an on-slope double height piece, but if there were then that would totally work for me; the height difference to me seems fine: the slope is what bothered me about it.
I wish the draggable viaducts supported passing under El-Rail, but I don't think this functionality is in place; draggable viaducts don't support the JPN T21s you're using, of course, but it's worth a shot anyways just to double check. I haven't opened the game in months so I couldn't tell you if I've even bothered to try it. It would look very cool if you could somehow pull that off...

The L1 draggable viaducts do, actually. That feature has been in place since the introduction of the draggable viaducts in NAM 32.

Well...that answers that question. Looks like I have some setups to test out. I guess that's a solution to Nanami's High Elevated Rail overpass as well.
Running a L1 road viaduct will allow the El-Rail to stay level without any height changes, though of course he'll lose the JPN viaduct T21s. Should make that little crossing more compact and cleaner, though.

Such a railroad system has many advantages! I wish that this project will be a great success! I like the increase of the railway line. It looks so much better! You a good road crossing succeeded! I google this project. Do you have more real pictures and new pictures of your in-game project ?
Perhaps not the nicest offramp you'll ever see, but this was the best I could do given the small amount of space and existing development.

@CasperVg: I would used the Small 90° Curve Road and the FLUPs under the RHW to avoid the viaduct on the other side. ;)
@Nanami: It's a great scene, but for the lack of a ground version, I don't use the BTM. &mmm
@CasperVg: pretty compact indeed  . kinda agree with vinlabsc3k above, that small 90 degree curve will make it better.
@ vinlabsc3k: Well as I stated earlier that the scene basically just inspired by the recent light rail project here.

This exchanger (?, from the Collins dic) of Huan jue wan was finished last week in the periphery of Chongqoing, enormous metrpolis in the south-west of China, after eight years of construction.
The work superimposes five levels where the tallest one is 37 meters tall. No less than 15 ramps had to be constructed to allow the traffic to go from one level to another, in eight directions.

This video travels on new highways and areas being developed before heading in and out of the big city. Existing highways traveled on in previous videos have also been expanded to handle the increasing growth of the region.
I am trying to create a 'redundancy' highway network meaning that there is a reliable alternative route to take if a highway is closed or has reduced capacity for various reasons including congestion, construction and crashes.
