Title: the vernacular trend
Post by: superhands on August 07, 2008, 09:51:01 AM
well ive decided to open a bat thread.
the plan is to create additional angled waterfronts based on SG's modular canals.

first up diagonals.

Fancy. I may have to pull out one of my old cities (pretty much covered w/ SG canals) and see what I can do with these. They look great.

Hello Bighead... Nifty looking building. I don't know if I would use the rusty corrugate on the front awning but it is very effective on the main roof. Possible to find a non rusty or less rusty section of that texture? You may also consider some vent pipes on the roof and also you may also want to do some downspouts. The front facade looks good with all the detailing. This is a good effort.

Title: Re: the vernacular trend
Post by: SimFox on August 14, 2008, 02:54:16 AM
it is very nice... But I think the Rusting on the roof is over exaggerated... milding it down would make it more realistic

Post by: FrankU on August 14, 2008, 04:28:04 AM
I especially like the diagonal canals. Did you give them the Callagrafx texture?
Will they be available soon?

I like you house, but I must admit that I am happy that in my country they don't use currugated steel as roofing material. Doesn't look too nice!

Nice progress on that building! Looks wonderful ;)
Title: Re: the vernacular trend
Post by: superhands on August 15, 2008, 08:53:20 AM
thanks for the replies. simfox and jmyers, improvement will follow, and i think some down pipes need to be widened.

frankU, really its a matter of time. i hope to do some FAR fitting canals in the near future, and im working on the cal texture, except i'm moddleing in gmax so i dont think you can create the water illusion quite so well.  "Doesn't look too nice" - true but it does make for a good bat.

here is a 1x3 bank. a couple textures to be improved and roof junk to be added.

I love the W2Ws. That's a style I haven't seen too often, and I hope you'll make some more. I think the textures look good except for that big black mark on the side of the second building. The bank looks pretty good, but the wall seem a bit dirty, is it going to be a lower wealth building? Either way, you have some interesting stuff in the works. I'll love to see the buildings when you start to lot them.

Post by: spa on August 16, 2008, 08:34:22 PM
This is the first time that I have seen this thread. You're doing some good work. I love small w2ws!

On the first building, I agree with the comments about the corrugate. On the main street level awning, I would just take the left bit of the texture (the green but somewhat faded part) and put it right across. On the main roof, you could turn down the rust a bit, but I think it's also more than passable as is. One thing, that black blob bit on the side wall, is that suppose to be graffiti? I think the graffiti tag you have on the one side works but the black blobish one really doesn't.

On the 1x3 bank, I don't have much to suggest. About the only thing I see is the glass on the side below the overhanging window bank; it is a tad bright, especially compared to the dark windows on the rest of the building. Some contrast is good, but I think that glass needs a little work. By the way, the roof texture is great!

thanks for the comments spa and co. i'll keep it short but yes i agree that graffiti (trademark) does not work.

here is a work in progress. the Belvedere Hotel on the corner of bathurst and kent st, sydney.
modelled it of original plans by Spain, Cosh and Minnett architects, then i Exaggerated it with the lower floor.
i like how it turned out.

the hotel is making progress slowly. most of the modelling is complete. i had a look at other bats and decided to scale it upwards more. i actually at times had a 30cm ruler held up at the screen :D

well I guess I should make it be known that this is a train station. ;) (hint: it was written in white in the first post ;D)

it's Waverley Station, Edinburgh.
don't ask me why i took this on :P
ideally i hope to get some transparency through the roof so that you can see some amount of activity.
we will see how this goes for polys along with detailing.
atm it's measuring in around 6 by 22 sc4 tiles.
having a quick look at the main entrance, i think i forgot to scale it up.
i just really wanted to show of the the road :D

one question to the experts, is it possible to use face extrude rather than extrude and place a material on it?

Yes. But, when you apply your texture/material, hit modifiers > UV coordinates > UVW map, and choose planar, box, cylindrical, etc... to make the material appear.

thanks fatsuhono for the info. i must of written that late at night :D so simple.

Wow... I can't believe I didn't see this earlier either!

I think the diagonals are so much of a breakthrough that they'd be enough on their own!  ... need anybody to test 'em?

I love your W2W too!!

EDIT:  One more thing... I think in Sgs orig, he added the purification sparkle effect that makes the water appear to sparkle in places... you might consider adding that so that the sets match up correctly.  Just a thought.

Never mind... it's just a small effect prop in the lot editor, but looking at the original set, it doesn't look like it was placed everywhere anyway.

Any idea when you might start releasing some of your work (like the canals)?

I really like the idea of the underpass for the roundabout, too!

That's too bad, I really liked this one. Remember, whenever you save your gmax file, use the little "+" in the save dialogue, this will add a version number to your filename, so you can go back to an older copy at any time if something goes wrong.

Believe me when I tell you this... if you released those diagonal pieces of SG's canal, they would be received with LOTS of fanfare!  Many people have used this set with the one major drawback of there not being any diagonal pieces to it... thus they have switched to other canal sets such as Oppies which certainly work, but which don't have the same aesthetic finish of SG's canals.

Keep up the great work.  I'm looking forward to seeing the roundabout filler in game (... once you remake it...!)

wow thanks for the replies all.
today i have been working on a train station that will fit str.
it is Beverley Station which was built in 1886 in the town of Beverley WA.
the green hedge and the ramps are the only addition to this model i think they hide the blight to well.
the roof texture is still a work in progress, but i can say tiles might be considered.

thanks for the feedback all.
i tried playing around with the "tin roof" idea, looking at JenP's work for inspiration and well, it din't
work out so i decided to go for tiles. i guess with the hedge and roof combined it looks like it rather
belongs in the UK rather than a dusty drought haven. the textures arent keeping with the original
but after all it's only a game based on real life.
Thanks goes to JMyers for his tile roof texture found in Jmouse's bats thread.

i think this one is ready for export (still to do niteliting :( )

the canals are well on the backburner due to rl and ram stuff.

ive started an appartment/flat based on the little boltons in london.
ive got a few ideas for this one. maybe a prop family  ;) with custom bases, making them slope friendly, as rendered by 8m wide not 16m like some of the maxis ones.

For the mirror don't use the mirror button, selected all, clone and use the "mirror" in the "modifier list"

Wonderful work on the houses. Some friendly observations for you :). Although I'm assuming the wall textures aren't final, I think they need to be closer to the kind of brown colours on the victorian buildings in this picture (Similar to gascooker's terraces):
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2a/726-732_Holloway_Road.JPG
I think that the bricks around the windows should be white like the bay windows at the front.

This kind of colour:

Just for future reference (For my own BATing adventures), what heights are you using for each floor?

a batter never gives his secrets away, but i will $%Grinno$%
toxicpiano:

4.6 roof
4.5 3rd
4.5 2nd
4.9 1st floor
1.54 base

all in m.
i'll be making a few of these so the variation will differ- texture wise. i think this one thoe will be the natural brick version.

orange, thanks for the info. this will help save a lot of time.
pat, not sure at this point, but i think we will go for custom content :)

Bighead,

I dunno if this would convince you to spend some more time on the canals... but SG is talking about expanding the canal set (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=6987.msg233492#msg233492) some more but he's not adding diagonals.  You've got the missing piece!

I like how that line with dashed road looks. Also like how you made that you can see the icon for the zoning density, pretty clever. Any chance you will make this rashed line/straight like compatible with the turning lanes for road? Or perhaps make it a puzzle piece that changes a certain area of the road into it like he rural road mod?

david, the owr road is going to be a car park and the building will be able to have back and front road access.

something ive always been unhappy about is the colour of the maxis soil. it looked to grey. so this is what i came up with.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi293.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fmm50%2Fbighead99999%2Fth_soil.jpg&hash=99e5049b02127df7a018643de34b770858e4a571) (http://s293.photobucket.com/albums/mm50/bighead99999/?action=view&current=soil.jpg)

well its been a while since I posted here :P nothing has really progressed on the bat front due to RL and other projects

but one area that I hope to focus on in the near future is improving the current maxis Farms, as well as some new fields/crops.

below is the market garden which has been better spaced to RL.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi293.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fmm50%2Fbighead99999%2Fm3.jpg&hash=6726b1773c3057e6cc83e44cf05b2b17e58079dd)

And finally introducing the texture for large scale cropping programs, that are conventionally sown using an air seeder or combine.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi293.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fmm50%2Fbighead99999%2Fm2.jpg&hash=3722628a905c81af6c1f3c057756ae6e5bee326b)

currently I'm testing 10% or so opacity on the base textures, which bleeds the landscape texture through, however some weird texture bugs occur when zooming.

ok.  its been a while between projects, and this ones been on my mind for a while.
its the Western Australian Museum building, as per original design by George Temple-Poole.

the original vision for the museum entailed Victorian elegance that would grace the capital city.
due to costs and government prowess, the building project finished as only a 1/3rd of what the plans described.

in fact below is this 1/3rd:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi293.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fmm50%2Fbighead99999%2Fmuseumartgalleryrender1.jpg&hash=419005da562267babe69c428dd5ea80a134f3eb8)

this is the original concept which was to line james st:

Perhaps one day i'll get to finish these projects, in the meantime,
here's something else:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi293.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fmm50%2Fbighead99999%2Fpreview1cumminstheatre.png&hash=a372b0d765563998b08b2b86f59544ca6273271b)

it measures out to be 1x4tiles.
a few minor changes from the real life model, and still some work to be done in areas.
whitest making this, it occurred to me sc4 is missing post offices. perhaps the next line of creation?

before the final render, i plan on adjusting the intensity of the textures a bit, fixing up the street side wall, and perhaps tweaking the back wall a little.

function wise, it is serving as a library which is near practical to real life.

well now, I've made the switch to 3ds max and loving it :)

and to familiarise myself with the program, I've chosen a nice simple geometric building.

this is 8 exhibitionist st, Melbourne.  Ernst & Young being the primary occupiers. the lot will most likely be a 4x4 corner.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi293.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fmm50%2Fbighead99999%2Faaa.png&hash=2770a692b0435e6faff3f0d88c9e24c144aebf9e)

a handful of items to be done. such as roof junk, the '&' needs working and the parapets are so far non-existent.

for those of who who may not know, the tower is an addition to the Herald Sun building, in which in the above render, would feature underneath the yellow columns.
as this building is all ready batted, I'm thinking perhaps a modernist façade to accompany the domineering cube.

the one thing i would like to get right first time around is the glass texture, and ive seen some very nice examples of this among the batty community  :P
I really need to get my head around how materials/textures are handled in max, although  being quite similar to gmax.

Title: Re: the vernacular trend
Post by: superhands on March 25, 2011, 11:50:26 PM
hmm the post office  :P i actually forgot about that until yesterday... just needs nightlights, lot properties and it should be read to go in say a week with out delays.

using bing maps i can see what's really going on in terms of those pesky aircon units ect... and the Sun building should look familiar

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi293.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fmm50%2Fbighead99999%2Fernstreal.jpg&hash=6db2500759288dfd34c6873b4458c11c85b6addb)

personally i think this extensive structure is unresponsive to the Sun building in RL and is just to abrupt, although both look pleasing to the eye separated on their own parcel of land.  :o

Thank-you for not totally putting the post office on the back burner, I am a big fan of historic structures and already reserved a spot in my city for your building ;)

In terms of your newest project i had no idea that was the structure on top of the Herald Sun building, it is so weird how we'll potentially have both these "sections" of the building in the game now, but as separate structures. haha. Good Luck with this new project :)

thanks for the comments.

well we all get easily distracted.

Dwyer Durack House in Perth has recently had cladding works carried out, which i assume is for the chogum meeting in a few months.
the structure was until recently looking worse for wear. Originally the exterior assumed pebble bash/terrazzo-built in the 70s.
this building appears small enough yet still a challenge to master in the bat system. Im still deciding if i like the building- yet it would look nice in a downtown sc4 city.

the cladding system introduced has created the highest gloss finish i have ever seen on a building, apart from fully glassed exteriors that is :P

below is the link to the photo i took recently:
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm50/bighead99999/047.jpg

as you can see the structure is coming up to completion:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi293.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fmm50%2Fbighead99999%2Fwestpac.png&hash=dba4082b137cf6f2822d5f44134d4479aabf67a3)

I'm hoping this will be a corner 2x2 tile job, and looking at a 4m building set back, with two entrances on each road facing side.
In real life the north side has no windows but in this version it will have windows...

haha and yes i hope this one will make it to a finished release grade before things get to busy again!
