Title: Emil's inn - maps and more
Post by: emilin on September 26, 2008, 03:40:56 AM
This is where i show my stuff. Mostly maps, but I suspect there will be other things in the future too.

My first maps (all feedback is welcome)

Mount Everest and Lhotse

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder%2Feverestreal.jpg&hash=4b0f994870f7c237ef81a57e19496936fb97b7ff)

Mount Everest, also known as Chomolungma, is the highest mountain in the world at 8.848 m. Like all of the world's highest peaks it is located in Asia. The mountain was first climbed in 1953 by the New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay from Nepal.

Lhotse is the world's 4th highest mountain at 8.414 m. It is probably best known for it's proximity to Mount Everest (ascending Everest from the south route includes traversing parts of the northwest face of Lhotse). However, the south face of the mountain has great rise over local terrain. Lhotse was first climbed in 1956 by Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger from Switzerland.

This map includes both Everest and Lhotse and also several other minor peaks in the vicinity. It has obviously been lowered to fit game standards, but the rise over local terrain is completely unaltered.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder%2Feveresttext.jpg&hash=5a040fdd09108771f5afd3b1655779add988388a)

K2 and Broad Peak

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder%2Fk2real.jpg&hash=1d57b2f10a1921a7271fb10a216e4d28c39e5622)

K2, also known as Mount Godwin Austen or Chogori (this name is dubious since it appears to mean just "big mountain" in the local language, and might have been a sort of joke or misunderstanding), is the second highest mountain in the world at 8.611 m, and by many mountaineers considered the most difficult to summit. It is located in the Karakorum range in northern Pakistan. The mountain was first climbed in 1954 by Italians Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni.

Broad Peak, also known as Faichan Kangri, is the 12th highest mountain in the world at 8.047 m. Besides its' proximity to K2 it is also known for its' extended (broad) summit, hence the name. It was first climbed in 1957 by Austrians Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl.

This map includes both K2 and Broad Peak and also several other minor peaks in the vicinity. It has been lowered to fit game standards, and also compressed with approximately 300 m less rise over local terrain to avoid glitches in the region view.

Kanchenjunga

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder%2Fkanchenjungareal.jpg&hash=21395fe5c17710c46d849e9d2288fe2004d25ef5)

Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world at 8.586 m. It is located at the Eastern border of Nepal. In my humble opinion it is also the most beautiful of all the +8.000 mountains in the world. It also has a very high rise over local terrain. According to religious beliefs the summit is sacred and most expeditions honor this by stopping their ascent a few meters short of the actual summit. Kanchengjunga was first climbed in 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band from Britain.

This map includes Kanchenjunga, and also several other minor peaks in the vicinity. This includes the mountain Jannu, southwest of Kanchenjunga, that is famous for its' extremely steep and difficult slopes.

Wow! :o  Those are amazing emilin! &apls  Where oh where did you get the DEM data for those maps?  I know the place I get international DEM from doesn't have nearly as good quality as what you have there, it looks to be 1/3 arc data.

Again, fantastic work on those, I almost thought for a moment beskhu3penm was back since the quality of your maps are so similar to his.

WOW! What a set of maps, my friend! Those mountains are just gorgeous!

I like the Everest one the best, though that may just be because I finished reading The Kid Who Climbed Everest some time ago, about Bear Grylls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_Grylls) climbing Everest at 23 years old.

Excellent work! Just excellent!

papab2000: Thanks!

art128: Thank you!

Pat: Hehe... thanks!

Diggis: Thank you! And I guess the answer would be "sparsely". I'm actually not sure what would happen if zoning at that altitude. I guess usabilty wasn't really top priority for these, hehe...

Simpson: Thank you!

blade2k5: Check your messages. ;-)

warconstruct: Thanks!

pvarcoe: Just the old Columbus mod (with highest elevation for snow levels). I tried it with the "jagged edges mod" to get rid of some unevensies, but the result wasn't very good. Almost all the snow on the slopes dissapeared.

Heblem: Thank you! As usual it seems that you are responsible for almost everything I do with this game. ;D

thundercrack83: Thanks! I like Everest the best too since there is no compression for that region. Many of the highest mountains in the world rise so high above local terrain that the areas have to be compressed considerably to fit with game standards.

Yoman: Isn't there already ploppable snow on the LEX? ;D

----------------------

That was a warm welcome indeed. It's good to know that the first batch of maps was appriciated. I'm going to do three more sometime during the weekend (probably uploading pictures on Sunday night), and if those are appriciated in the same way I will start packing them up and have them scrutinized for a proper release.

These are quite small maps, so I'm thinking 3 at a time in minipacks is probably the best way to release them. Is that a correct assumption?

Oh... and I forgot, I'm officially calling this "The 14 Summits project" as of now, since I will be doing all of the +8.000 meter mountains. ;D

More mountains...

OK. Three more coming up right here. Dhaulagiri posed a lot of difficulty with the extreme elevation differences involved. Other than that it was pretty straight forward, though I have done a few touchups where the DEM:s were obviously missing information.

Enjoy!

Makalu

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder%2Fmakalureal.jpg&hash=353646291c4abbfd1beda88a964efd1486bb5eee)

Makalu is the 5th highest mountain in the world at 8.462 meters. It is located just 22 km east of Mount Everest, and the mountain marked Junction Peak on this map is actually the easternmost part of the Everest massif. Makalu is shaped as a foursided pyramid with rather steep slopes and is considered one of the harder mountains to summit. It was first climbed in 1955 by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy from France.

This map includes Makalu, and also several other minor peaks in the vicinity. This includes the dramatic Chomo Lonzo.

Cho Oyu

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder%2Fchooyureal.jpg&hash=05103394c0ec4aaa0e671ebfffb7e57b1df7856c)

Cho Oyo is the 6th highest mountain in the world at 8.201 meters. It is located in Nepal, some distance west of Mount Everest. Unlike many other of peaks on this list it does not rise extremely high over local terrain. The slopes are moderate and it is often mentioned as the easiest +8.000 meter mountain to summit. Cho Oyo was first climbed in 1954 by Austrians Herbert Tichy and Joseph Jöchler and Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama from Nepal.

This map includes Cho Oyo, and also several other minor peaks in the vicinity.

Dhaulagiri

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder%2FDhaulagirireal.jpg&hash=3eeec3ed87aaa9f03bf152aeebbc81e4248f4bc6)

Dhaulagiri is the 7th highest mountain in the world at 8.167 meters. It is located in the southern part of the Nepalese Himalayas and has a tremendous rise over local terrain. It stands almost 7.000 meters above Kali Gandaki gorge - that has been cut off from this particular map for practical reasons (it lays just easy of this region). The peak is considered difficult to summit both for its' technical difficulty and for the objective dangers involved. Dhaulagiri was first climbed in 1960 by Kurt Diemberger, Peter Diener, Ernst Forrer, Albin Schelbert, Nyima Dorji and Nawang Dorji, members of a Swiss/Austrian expedition.

This map includes Dhaulagiri, and also several other minor peaks in the vicinity. It has been compressed by almost 800 meters to avoid glitches in the region view (so you can imagine how impressive it really is).

Beautiful RL photos and beautiful maps Emil!  &apls

Thank you for sharing them, even if it will be difficult to build a big city on one of these maps, a good player can use it to make something really unique!
I guess we should think about more terrain mods shortly... ;)
(And there are some possibilities to make something with straight snow edges, I would experiment with these maps with pleasure  ;))

If you are talking about actual city-building: doubtful. I do think that there is an audience for this none-the-less, but that is mostly working with flora and terraforming, and perhaps some of the wilderness stuff from Peg's MTP packs, but not for regular gameplay, no.

I actually came up with the idea when I downloaded the available Everest map from STEX, and it was badly flawed in very many ways. So, at least one person was looking for stuff like this, I guess. ;D

I'm not sure if I agree, in terms of normal playability...  Especially with the first three maps, they have flat areas between the mountains (uh, I think they're called valleys... would have made a lot more sense for me to describe them as such!) that would need to be manually flattened, but could be built on.  I can see maps like this combined with OTHER maps to create large regions that have some (very) mountainous areas, but also have more typical urban areas too.

Simpson: Thank you!

art128: Thanks!

thundercrack83: Thanks a bucnh, Dustin! Good to see you hanging around this thread too. ;D

BarbyW: I already responded to that, but I would also like to thank you for all your good work. The maps have been scrutinized in the privat forum, and I am underway with fixing the issues that needed correcing.

CabraBuitre: Hehe... maybe you are right. I was merely saying what I was going to use them for myself... but when they are released I guess you can use them in several different ways. And I also think they could serve a purpose for, let's say, a story driven journal where the main characters go on some sort of trip...

A small update on the state of things

These maps have now been tested and are basically ready for release. However, Adam (Ennedi), told me that different terrain mods use different "max heights" and that these maps exceed the limits for most mods (if not all?). That does not effect the way they look if you just open them in the game (like I did), but it means that you can't build or terraform anything above max height, or the terrain collapses down to that height (I tried this myself and it looks ridiculous).

According to Adam this is rather easy to fix with an addon that changes the max height for any terrain mod, and he is working on that issue. So, even if there is nothing wrong with the maps themselves I feel that it would be appropriate to wait untill Adam's mod is done, before releasing them. They would be so much more user friendly with that mod. The maps WILL be released in packs, but I have yet to decide what numer of maps will feature in each pack.

While waiting for this, I decided to try something a little "easier". This map is still not finished (I am going to add more flat land) but I think the basic layout is pretty nice. It's mountainous, but not to the same extremes as the first maps. It is a combination of real terrain data, and handterraforming:

Thank you art and Simpson!

I'm thinking this one is almost ready now. I have lowered it and smoothed over some areas to make it easier to develop (though I would still say this is a HARD map to develop).

Now, the question is: should I smooth it over a bit more, or leave that up to the user? What do you think?

Leave it as is. You will never know where (and how much) flattening will need various players, and flattening this map you can lose it's unique character. I like it a lot.
To be sure of my answer I should open city tiles  ;)

So, it's not Blackwater.  Even so, it's great to see you around again, Emilin.   :)  I also like these maps very much, although you are right about the level of difficulty.  Almost every building would have some sort of retaining wall, or else it would have an insanely sloped base. :-\

OK. I guess that wasn't much to think about then. ;D

Thank you, people. I have now released the map under the name Anna Valley,
It's on the LEX here: http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1797
and on the STEX here: http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=20496

So - this is where you're hiding nowadays. Glad I found the track.. You made great maps - and the last one has a great name too (Anna Valley).  I will return to see what else you'll be doing here...

Hi there! Good to see you around!

Well, the first 2 packs of the 14 summits project are almost ready for release now. They will both be LEX exclusive, and uploaded in a few days.

Meanwhile I started on another map. I think of it as an Arctic Archipelago (the two main islands are actually Jan Mayen and Björnöya) but it can probably be used just as well as a tropical environment. The process is the same as with Anna Valley - real terrain data, modified and composed together with handterraformed features in the Terraformer. It is about half finished at this point:

I knew that you would come back to island maps, Emil.  Since I am already aware of your talent in this department, I must say that I have been looking forward to this. :)  It turns out that the wait was worthwhile.

Thanks for all your nice and supportive comments!

And yes, metarvo, I'm back to islands. ;D

The first two packs of the 14 summits project has now been released on the LEX only:
Pack I: http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1808
Pack II: http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1809

And, since these are rather special maps, with extremely high elevation drops there is a recommended dependecy aswell. Adam (Ennedi) has developed a High Altitude Patch that makes it possible to develop these maps up to the very top of the mountains. Without it the terrain at high altitudes will collapse when terraformed or built upon.
High Altitude Patch, by Ennedi: http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1807

-----------------

I'm feeling almost done with the arctic archipelago map now.

I have tested it with several different terrain mods. Here is what it looks like with Tereisu's Arctic mod:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder2%2FJanMayencensusta.jpg&hash=6e4a4fc343e2a5cc1839651d2cf19b764cc4d1bf)

It looks ok, but I'm not to crazy about the pinkish tone at high altitudes. I also found another arctic mod in my folders (can't remember where I orginally got it, sorry...):

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder2%2FJanMayencensusar.jpg&hash=71d1e14ab72a3a6fb7cac8efaaf3d5d464528682)

Whiter and better, but it lacks a bit of the "coldness" of Tereisu's mod. I also tried the old Columbus mod for "summer" pictures and it looks pretty good too:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder2%2FJanMayencensusco.jpg&hash=b5c58503ff7408380e7b998d2af84a64205fb421)

Of course, this map can work as a tropical environment too, but I will leave that for the user to try out. ;D

Here's the map file as it looks right now. Please note that I have handterraformed the sea floor specifically to make use of underwater flora. There are extensive sand banks along parts of the shore, and other parts are much steeper (for whale watching along the cliffs). I'm pretty proud of that particular detail, actually... :satisfied:

Great looking island map emilin

QuoteWithout it the terrain at high altitudes will collapse when terraformed or built upon.

That's weird, I've built as high as 15,000-16,000 feet and never experienced a 'collapse' when building at high altitudes.

I'm not an expert modder, but as I understand the problem, each terrain mod has a "max height" for development. I think the Maxis terrain has 2.400 meters, and the Olympic terrain has 4.000 meters. If you terraform or build above that specific height the terrain will automatically "collapse" down to the max height. I have experienced it myself with these maps.

What the patch does is raise the max height to 5.000 meters for all terrain mods.

I still find that odd because like I said, it's never happened to me with any of the Cycledog terrain mods I've used, but I'm not going to argue the point.

Anyways, your maps are really good and I look forward to seeing what you toss our way next

Thanks everyone for your comments!

I am now working on packs III and IV of the 14 Summits Project, and I hope to have them packed and ready for release this week. I can, however, not make any promises since my wife is just days away from having a child right now. So, I might be off to the hospital in a hurry at just about any time.

Anyways, here are three more of the worlds highest mountains...

Manaslu

Manaslu is a beautiful mountain, but unfortunatly the topographic data don't do justice to this summit in SC4M format. It's still a good looking map, but I would have hoped for even better.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder2%2Fmanaslureal.jpg&hash=ba079d0bce888416b0e9a3d390460eab54841509)

Nanga Parbat

This map, on the other hand, turned out very much like the actual mountain. The famous Rupal face is spot on.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi109.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn65%2Femilin_2006%2Fmainfolder2%2Fnangareal.jpg&hash=bcba30c141c7edef6cd76b9550be1d760a75e24b)

Annapurna

I am fascinated by this mountain. It's only the tenth highest in the world, but when compairing the number of successful summits with the number of fatalities it turns out to be the deadliest of all the +8000m mountains. And it's not even that technically difficult. It's the exposure and avalanches that are the real dangers on Annapurna.

Hello, emilin.

I would be doing you an injustice if I didn't take time to post in your thread.  I can see that the NHP has greatly gained by adding you as a member.  Your maps are superb!  I am especially taken by your 14 Summits Project.  I most certainly will have to look into your high altitude mapping work.  These maps are beautiful and I certainly appreciate your sharing them with the community.

Take good care and congratulation to you and your wife on your (pending) child.

Regards,

Gary (Vandy)

I hope you and your wife (and the new child) do well, Emil.  So, it looks like you're up in the mountains again.  This is a very detailed map, even if it would be difficult to develop.  I look forward to the next one.

Vandy: Wow! Thank you so much, Vandy. It's nice to hear such words from the mapping legend himself. Thanks! The child is still "pending", but any day now...

papab2000: Thanks a bunch!

metarvo: Thank you! I'm glad you like it.
