I for a long time already I try to understand difficult business of creation of a real map of my city with the real sizes. Tried to create by means of DEM, but my city to cover with data Dem only on half, tried to create in Paint, but the result was not pleasant to me, not enough realism. Probably I do not manage to make a map from for my bad knowledge of English, probably I miss the important information from forums. To me have advised to ask experts NHP about the help. I ask you to create a map of the city St.-Petersburg (Russia) for mine project. Distance from the centre need (in google) - on the north of 15 km, on the south of 16 km, on the West of 10 km, on the east of 14 km. I will be very grateful for the help and sorry for bad english. :)

Romanoff,

I took a look at what international data was available and could only get what you see in this picture. I can go more to the East, West, and South but not the North.

I will check with blade2k5 and see if he has better data. He may already have a map for this area in the works.

No, I haven't started with Russia yet, but if you need a little more to the north Rich, try dl'ing the the DEM data file in the section right above the section you did dl to get what you have above.  Then load both DEM files with Global Mapper and go from there.

And welcome to SC4D Romanoff   Nice to have you aboard ;D

Is the problem quality or complete lack of DEM:s?

I think I can find DEM:s for the area north of the 60th degree, but it would only be 3 arc seconds, and look pretty much like the rest of your map, pabap. But the information is there if you need to extend it northwards. Give me a shout if you want it.

Yes, I too looked the international data but why that northern area there is not present. Thanks for a picture, I expected that it should turn out more detailed, but on it too big distortions, in a city of tens rivers and channels, and on a picture only one main river why channels and the rivers are not displayed, to me it is not clear. ((

blade2k5
Thanks, I hope my stay at a forum will be fruitful)) I used Global mapper, but the program wishes to do nothing without registration..

emilin
I think that even if would be full DEM, it would not solve my problem. If quality of a picture is same what has presented papab2000 it not that that is necessary for me (((Probably to me it is necessary to stick together satellite map Google, and to work all coastal lines, the rivers and channels in the graphic editor? It certainly work difficult, but, I think, I will consult. Though there is one problem: how to make so that 1км it was equal to one small square in game?

Sorry before all for errors in offers or not understanding, all from for my bad knowledge of English (

papab2000

Romanoff,

The picture you see is just an overview of an unfinished map. The is not what the terrain will look like in the game. I just posted it to show you the area that is available.

Ah, clearly, with English at me not so, I apologise.

I here have worked with the graphic editor a little, took a picture from google in the size 4x4 km, and have designated on it water and a land. As a result it has turned out a card of one region of city centre for game 257x257 pix, a problem only that on it heights are not exact ((And work has appeared too difficult

Certainly it is possible so all map of the city to draw, but I nevertheless hope that you know a way on easier)))

papab2000

Romanoff,

Those small canals are not going to show up in the DEM data. I can make you a map with the main water ways, but you will have to put those small canals in yourself. I would suggest using one of the canal mods available to accomplish this. Only issue will be I can not get any data to the north at this time. If that changes in the future I would be happy to revisit this map and add the northern section of St Petersburg in.

Yes, probably it is better to use chanel mod. I hope in the future northern section will appear, I will wait, I hope for your help

Romanoff,

I have been in contact with the webmaster of the DEM data site and I am hoping he will fix the site so that I will be able to get the full city for you. All I can do right now is wait for him to fix the problem. I will let you know what he says.

Hello Romanoff

Do you think that Rich can provide us some contact information? I've been following this thread and think that St. Petersburgh would make a very nice map to play the game on. Perhaps Ramonoff could also contact the webmaster to see what can be done to either fix the site links or obtain the DEM file for that northern sector.

There seems to be a bit of a misunderstandig here. I do have access to 3 arc second data for the northern sector. I suspect that is the same value as the usual international data for these places.

I am not, however, sure that the quality is good enough for rendering a map of a metropolitan area. I would suggest a combination of using DEM:s and handterraforming details in the Terraformer. No, that is quite a lot of work, but will probably render the best result.

But supplying the data for the northern sector is not a problem, pabap. I can either send it to you, or make a try to render the basic terrain myself?

emil,

If you have the data go ahead and see what you can do with it. I still do not have access to it, and have not received a second email from the webmaster on the progress of fixing the site. Can you PM me with the link to the data you are getting and I will see if it lets me have it.

Thanks,
Rich

This is what I can do with a 10x10 map. It clearly needs work, but the northern sector is there:

PS. You have a link in your inbox, Rich.

Emil,

Great job on getting the data.  You can only do so much with the 3 arc data. The user can always fill in the missing water and if that is where they live they know the land much better then we do. Hopefully Romanoff can use this for his game.

Hehe... let's hope so, then. Romanoff (or anyone else who wants it) drop me a message with a valid e-mail and I'll send it to you. I really don't feel that this is high enough quality for uploading on an exchange site so I would rather just send the files personally.

Thanks you big for it. The base will help me to understand with heights, plus I will trace all channels and lakes (after all in a city about thousand bridges). The excellent map of the city which I will lay out for downloading As a result will turn out. I send you my e-mail )
