Hello, everyone, and welcome to The Big Country. This Diary is based on various songs--I've done my best to tailor the journal to the lyrics of the songs. I'll be posting links to online versions of the songs for you to listen to. I'll try to keep them from youtube whenever possible (though my very first song wasn't there, which can't be a good sign). I encourage you to listen to the songs while you enjoy the pictures and the thread in general, but obviously, I can't make you. With that said, here's the first post! I'll be showing you pictures from all around the region. Next update will have the region map so you can better place them.

The Big Country--by Talking Heads (http://www.mp3raid.com/search/download-mp3/2/the_big_country/1.html) (sorry, not a youtube site)

I see the shapes,
I remember from maps.
I see the shoreline.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FCoveyvilleBeachlight3.png&hash=627646699a0c1f7af94b83b416b1b316c505562d)
a1
I see the whitecaps.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FCupertino-Nov27491204386890.png&hash=b8d872d7d9fabe34b1e9f5e1a099cb5adf0f50a5)
a2
A baseball diamond, nice weather down there.
I see the school and the houses where the kids are.
Places to park by the factories and buildings.
Restaurants and bars for later in the evening.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FHostetler-Mar291271201975460.png&hash=1d43ebc0a6e007efd040732d0bfe580a863b5366)
a3
Then we come to the farmlands, and the undeveloped areas.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FAhrensfeld-Jun14511202576948.png&hash=86b1349e826458532a378fb85e14f1f70f623964)
a4
And I have learned how these things work together.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FMorteDeVundoLake-Jul5521204407040.png&hash=92de78f19ae50bdd56c009ec8582c995640041e1)
a5
I see the parkway that passes through them all.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FAhrensfeld-Jan5231202526933.png&hash=2ac876e33b398043d536a6b5875751a6288a8e2d)
a6
And I have learned how to look at these things and I say,

I wouldn't live there if you paid me.
I couldn't live like that, no siree!
I couldn't do the things the way those people do.
I couldn't live there if you paid me to.

I guess its healthy, I guess the air is clean.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FCoveyvilleBeach-Aug30231202666029.png&hash=0c2b4b800e624a9b64b3ab324cdd8b35244b5af0)
a7
I guess those people have fun with their neighbors and friends.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FAhrensfeld-Aug23511202576988.png&hash=1154732939274a2c4189b2377587f054c14e842e)
a8
Look at that kitchen and all of that food.
Look at them eat it guess it tastes real good.

They grow it in the farmlands
And they take it to the stores
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FMorteDeVundoLake-May7471204406656.png&hash=8797eee94be8a4689390c2311c73eef7168bd01c)
a9
They put it in the car trunk
And they bring it back home
And I say ...

I say, I wouldn't live there if you paid me.
I couldn't live like that, no siree!
I couldn't do the things the way those people do.
I wouldn't live there if you paid me to.

I'm tired of looking out the windows of the airplane

I'm tired of traveling, I want to be somewhere.

a11
Its not even worth talking
About those people down there!

Picture a1
Mid-Coveyville light. Established circa 1853, decommissioned in 1965. However, the Coveyville Heritage Society has maintained the lighthouse, keeping the beacon lit since they acquired it in 1966.

a2
Cupertino cycleway around the Cupertino Pond. The city of Cupertino made the cycleway along the railroad through the downtown until they circled back around the Cupertino Pond. It is closed during mid-day because of the high numbers of people suffering from heatstroke.

a3
The Hostetler waterfront. Hostetler is a large, decentralized city, famous for the waterfront and salt marshes just across the water. The salt marshes are home to many different organisms, and so have been preserved in most areas in The Big Country.

a4
Ahrensfeld river, which winds down from the Decca mountains until swinging back into Hostetler. most of its journey is through the farmlands of Ahrensfeld and the other northern farm towns. It is famous for Canoe Camping, in which people start at the small town of Decca and canoe down river, sleeping at campgrounds overnight and carrying their boats around waterfalls.

a5
Feudal Farms of Morte De Vundo Lake. Morte de Vundo Lake is a small mountain lake that has some of the smallest and oldest farms in all the region on the lower slopes of the mountain.

a6
Ahrensfeld. The city itself is rather small, and is surrounded to the north by large, semi-modernized farms, and borders Hostetler to the south. The Trans-Decca highway here swings to the east till it hits the Morte De Vundo Ridgeline.

a7
The Coveyville Beach. This beach is a big hit because of the boardwalk. It is semi-sheltered by several islands, so waves never get to a dangerous height, but can still reach 4 feet on some days.

a8
Canoe Camping. Here is the landing for the mid-Ahrensfeld Campground. A group of kayakers appear to be getting ready to continue downriver.

a9
More farms from Morte de Vundo. The road, however, is a new feature. It was not long ago where there was no route out of Morte de Vundo that was paved. Now, most of the main roads are paved, as the town has been getting alot of revenue from eco-tourists and hikers coming to the lake.

a10
The small, unnamed island on Morte de Vundo lake has a cabin that often needs to be reserved months in advance. Here, a small plane from Hostetler flies over the island.

a11
Rail crossing on the Ahrensfeld river. The classic red, white, and yellow of the Decca rail line are often seen on this route between the mountains and the sea. Recently, a third electric track was added so these new trains could run, and the expensive overhead system plan was scrapped.

I hope you enjoyed the first update! I'll be back with the big picture, some new places, and a new song soon! Comments always welcome!

The pictures look great. This is a very unique way of presenting a MD... using song lyrics to explain the picture. I can imagine the words being said...

It's like a poem, except not as terrible.  ;D

I agree with SA, a very intersting approach to an MD. What are you going to do for Stairway to Heaven? :P

Now this is an unusual way of MD'ing. &apls &apls

Great choice for the first tune too. Some amazing pics you shown (I'm sure I recognise one of them A4 seem very familiar  :D)
Ahrensfeld (A6) town looks wonderful, it would be great to see some close ups of it.

I look forward to the next update

Very good MD you got going here Toichus Maximus but one thing I would suggest is that you use Jpg for your img's it will allow someone on DialUp to see the pics faster... Other then that I am really like the start here and I cant wait for more!!!

:o   Refreshing new MD - very unique!   &apls

I love the band, it was one of the first LP's that I bought myself, and am eager to find out what other songs and bands you will use in this Big Country!  You'll have my attention, that is sure....  :satisfied:

Shadow Assassin:
Well, you must be reading some bad poetry then :P Thanks for the comment!

Yoman :
Hmmm... wasn't on my list of potential song candidates... but I COULD conceivably do a really steep mountain trail and show pictures of the country looking to the west from the mountain top... "theres a feeling I get, when I look to the west, and my spirit is crying for leaving..." It could work, sorta, lol  ;)

TTC:
Yes, one or two of those I did show in the "show us your..." area. I know you were fond of the river  ;) Next update will indeed have pics of Ahrensfeld :)

Pat:
Alright, I'll do that in my future updates!

FrankU:
Thanks! I appreciate your support!

Bat:
Well, I'll keep the Big Country coming as best I can! Thanks for stopping by!

Warconstruct:
Thanks! I got the basic style of the river from Ennedi's Shosaloza diary. I thought his river style was really good for mountainous regions like this.

Sebes:
Yes, Talking Heads are one of my favorite bands. Stop Making Sense and The Name of the Band is Talking heads are incredible albums, too. They cover such a wide range of their work, which is really hard considering how varied all their sounds are.

No full update this week (I'll be working on a bi-weekly schedule) but here's a teaser pic for next week's update focus: the Ahrensfeld River!

Hello everyone! Here's an update focused on the Ahrensfeld River! This update's song will be Shenandoah, a wonderful old folk tune. Here's Bruce Springsteen's version on youtube. Please listen if you can!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=gmzAGoKHs44&feature=related

Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Way-aye, you rolling river
I'll take her 'cross yon rolling water
A way - we're bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri!

b2

The Chief disdained the trader's dollars,
Way-aye, you rolling river
My daughter you shall never follow
A way - we're bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri!

b3

For seven years I courted Sally,
Way-aye, you rolling river
For seven more I longed to have her
A way - we're bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri!

She said she would not be my lover
Way-aye, you rolling river
Because I was a tarry sailor
A way - we're bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri!

At last there came a Yankee skipper
Way-aye, you rolling river
He winked his eye, and he tipped his flipper
A way - we're bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri!

He sold the Chief that fire-water
Way-aye, you rolling river
And 'cross the river he stole his daughter
A way - we're bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri!

b1. Here we see the southern end of the Hibbertsville Falls. This is the boat launch for those rowing downriver.
b2. The Ahrensfeld river flows past the cliffs of La Coste. Off to the right, unseen, is the La Coste Cataract.
b3. The market in Ahrensfeld. It's the most famous open air shopping center on this side of The Big Country.
b4. The Ahrensfeld river flows past a grape field and dirt road.
b5. The town of Ahrensfeld differs from the more northern times because of the different architecture due to the high English ethnic population density.
b6. Church of St. John in the Decca Mountains, near the source of the Ahrensfeld river. It was built here because of the river's unity with God in the mind of many Costeian, brought over from pre-christian times.
b7. The La Coste Cataract. Every year, at least 2 people go over the edge because they failed to stop at the turn off during paddling.
b8. The largest paddling campground in the area, large enough to support non-paddlers as well.

With that done, here's the region overview I've promised:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25201%2FRegionoverview.jpg&hash=18be369b632046ba3a25ffa48cb94ac94746a75f)
You can see the Ahrensfeld River primarily in the lower left corner. The big city you see will be featured in next update :)

You may have noticed in the overview that some of the southern towns have a different achitectural style. This is actually because of the larger concentration of different ethnicity in the southern reaches. Here's a map so you can see the English concentration in the south and the Costeian concentration higher north.

Stay tuned! I'll be doing updates in the next few days, but I have to run now!. Hope you enjoyed it!

It's a maxis. I've been having trouble with most of my dl bridges, and since i've never had a different bridge controller than the newest one on this comp, I'm not sure why. But worry not--i'll eventually just completely uninstall the NAM and reinstall it or something. It'll get dealt with.

Think a bit more around the banks? It's difficult to get the cliffs with this terrain mod because the slope has to be steeper than you expect. Perhaps if I used ploppable red rocks on the side, it'd look a bit better.

Yes indeed. I'm trying to combine a Mediterranean feel with the red rock, so grapes seemed a fitting crop. I wish I could offer you some, but pixels are so unappetizing... Thanks for your support!

And now, lets take this opportunity to say g'bye to the Ahrensfeld river for a good while with my first mosaic (ever).

Thats a fantastic country you got growing there friend/mayor. Looked I espically love that river you have in the update. Keep the updates coming. :)
Will do! I'm actually surprised at how easily i've been able to stay on top of it. I was worried it'd be hard to manage with school and all.

Yeah, I really like Ennedi's method for the rivers. They come out nicely. But no rivers or campsites in the next update, so we'll see if I can do anything else well  ;)

Hello, everybody! Thanks to all for the replies, and remember, I'm always updating biweekly on Saturday, since my last post was ambiguous  ;)

This one is to the song Summer in the City (http://youtube.com/watch?v=leaBQvINuBA) by The Lovin' Spoonful.  Clicky the link for the youtube video of the song  ;)

c1. The tower of Ammersé, which offers a view over the Church and Parliament building. Behind it is the Central Rail Terminal, which, as you can see, is very busy in the morning hours.
c2. The Ammersé City Port is very small because there is no direct rail link. As such, it is used only for smaller shipments, and most of that is gravel, coal, and other minerals mined in the Decca Mountains.
c3.Midtown at night. In general, the architects of La Costé and the Big Country don't build taller, high density buildings. The ones that do exist are built by foreign contractors by foreign businesses.
c4. An extended T intersection between the Mid Costé Rt 16 Highway and the East Decca highway, which follows the eastern edge of the Decca Mountains. The large lake was decided to be preserved for the sake of drainage, and the second off-ramp was simply extended around its edge.
c5. The AIG building, one of the several highlights of the abrupt skyline of Ammersé.
c6. A torrential rainstorm while looking at one of the smaller public marinas. Here is also a local ferry terminal that crosses the river.
c7. Main Street, Ammersé. San Roderigo del Flores church with classic Costeian architecture is juxtaposed with the Parliament building, which was built in a more Greco-medieval style to set it apart from the other buildings while still preserving a historical sense.
c8. Here is a cross section of Ammersé, which shows from the coast of the river all to the beginning foothills, where the city abruptly stops. Construction on the slopes would prove challenging, and with enough space and a relatively stagnant population, the city council has legislatively cordoned the area with the nearly unanimous support of the population. Note also some of the city center's taller buildings, which were contracted by foreign companies. They supply the majority of the jobs for Ammersé, now.

Here in the Netherlands we have a discussion about skyscrapers every two weeks. Half of our population would go on the streets if someone would have the guts to plan such large towers next to a historical city.
And I must say: sometimes they have a point.

But hey, this is SC4. The mosaic is great.

I also love your parliament with the monastery and your harbour pic and, well, in fact all of them.

Thanks to everyone for wishing me a happy birthday!
I'll be in Mexico this coming weekend and the subsequent, hence the early update.
This week we'll be focusing on the highway network yet-so-far. There were a lot of highway/road-themed songs to choose from, but Bruce Springsteen won this one with Thunder Road (http://youtube.com/watch?v=MMhetitt9bI). It was a hard battle. Simon and Garfunkel almost beat him out, but this song was much more applicable than Somewhere They Can't Find me or Homeward Bound. Don't worry, I'll get in plenty more artists ;)

Mary' dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
Darling you know just what I'm here for

All the redemption I can offer girl

These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real

We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh-oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road

Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road sit tight take hold
Thunder Road

Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away

In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street

But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind so Mary climb in
It's town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win

Also, I have two regional overviews! The first is, to stay in theme, showing the highways and planned highways. 'Course, the RHW doesn't show up in transport view, so I painted them in. Note the Ferry link between Arguin and Polydor Peninsula.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25203%2FBigHighways.jpg&hash=9a6ec1f5f2f1538591818d4bc946a938aef7f11d)
d8
And the other is just a big overview.  The empty spot in those pics is where I'm building a highway and a massive port, and since they're each half finished, they look rather poor. As you can tell, I still need to work on the edges in some of the city tiles on the north side of the river with all the trees making nasty lines.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25203%2FTheBigCountry.jpg&hash=d5c73d32c1028d92998b04e890aee29fb178a791)

d1-The south end of a T intersection just past the Upriver Bridge. It gets alot of traffic to and from Ammersé, both commuter and vacationers.
d2-La Coste Memorial bridge at the opening to the Laforey River. This bridge, though more majestic than the Upriver Bridge, gets far less traffic, partially because of less people in the are and partially because the two populations are relatively balanced on each side of the river.
d3-Highway near Canon Rojo, where the highway skirts Red Gorge National Park. The plaza is the base of La Coste tower, a lone corporate tower overlooking Red Gorge.
d4-Here is the same T intersection at the Upriver Bridge. The fields are a great place for wildflowers, and are actually mown to prevent forest encroachment because people find it pretty and inviting when reaching the north shore.
d5-Another shot of La Coste Memorial Bridge. On the North Side, it crosses over a mid-size fishing harbor.
d6-The only full cloverleaf in the region, found in Arguin on the North Side. The least amount of traffic is generally from the east side, where a ferry link exists instead of a direct highway system.
d7-Just entering Canon Rojo. The West Highway, as it's called, brings lots of tourists from Ammersé, and so is used fairly constantly. It may need either expansion or renovation one day soon.
Anyway, thats it! Have a good one!

Thanks! I wanted to make the contrast obvious but still make it plausible by keeping the buildings modernish so it wasn't like Art Deco next to the Mediterranean stuff.

Lol, yes, the council isn't going to demolish most of the new neighborhoods. The population level is relatively stable now, so there hasn't been need for more development recently. Check out this update for highways, too ;)

Thanks lol. Well, before the companies were allowed in, there was alot of poverty in the bigger cities. The people caught on quickly. They brought alot of wealth to the area and really cleaned the place up, so the opposition is minimal now ^^

Exelent update friend, enjoyed watching your RHW network. I especially like the flows of cars shown on the pictures, making it looks so realistic. This is one of the few MD updates where I really every single picture is very much to my likings!

The only thing that bothers me is the rock in the top left corner of the region. What extra terrestial power did cause that ???

Update Time!

Hi guys, sorry it's been a while. It's been crazy over here with AP exams getting nearer, me looking for a job, vacation for a week, and my internship coming up. But I am still on my schedule. Today we'll be going to the rhyme of:

Eight Miles High (http://youtube.com/watch?v=OLzzlQj6b6M) by the Byrds. It's rather short, but i'll get all I can from it. Here we go!

Some laughing, some just shapeless forms
Sidewalk scenes and black limousines
Some living, some standing alone

e1: Statue at Alekus marina. It commemorates the famous river crossing of General Buendia, who led his men across from the hills west of Lindenshore under cover of dark to take the town. You can see the craggy bit on the river in the region photo from the previous update. This is where his camp was located.
e2: Development on Calpagi Hill takes a lot of engineering. Still, it is popular, offering semi-rural environment close to Ammersé and beautiful river views uninterrupted due to the steep incline.
e3: The Lindenshore Marina, just across from Ammersé. One of the most picturesque recreational marinas in the area.
e4: San Martin Cathedral in Alekus. Noteworthy for its great length and out-of-the-way location for a church of its size. Many patrons actually come from Ammersé, bringing some heavy traffic on the roads through Alekus and Calpagi Hill on Sundays.
e5:Another Shot of the Lindenshore Marina. Some passenger ferry traffic comes direct from Ammersé--it is a popular route.

I should also say that it's becoming increasingly difficult to match songs and work. I'll keep it as consistent as possible, but I may throw in a few non-musical updates for the sake of keeping everything coherent, as it gets a bit disjointed this way.

Sorry, guys, I'll do replies for the last update tommorrow--it's late now.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it, and see you soon!
Toich

also, this post was made on the 1100th view of the thread ;) Thanks for your support!

Original song.  Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are  a quasi-jazz group that really doesn't fit in a genre other than just calling them a jam band... which is vague in and of itself.  The great majority of their songs are instrumental.

Hello everyone! Update time, and sorry once more for the delay.

Today we'll be looking at some rail with the tune of Last Train To Clarksville (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1ISEV3evXwc&feature=related) by The Monkees.

Take the last train to Clarksville,
And I'll meet you at the station.

You can be be there by four thirty,
'Cause I made your reservation.
Don't be slow, oh, no, no, no!
Oh, no, no, no!

'Cause I'm leavin' in the morning
And I must see you again
We'll have one more night together
'Til the morning brings my train.
And I must go, oh, no, no, no!

Oh, no, no, no!
And I don't know if I'm ever coming home.

Take the last train to Clarksville.
I'll be waiting at the station.
We'll have time for coffee flavored kisses
And a bit of conversation.

Oh... Oh, no, no, no!
Oh, no, no, no!

Take the last train to Clarksville,
Now I must hang up the phone.
I can't hear you in this noisy
Railroad station all alone.

f1-Entrance to the Laforey Mouth Tunnel on the Northeast side. This line is a major rail conduit between the two sections of The Big Country separated by the Laforey river.
f2-crossing over the Red Canyon River. It's a smaller stream, and a smaller line, so commuter traffic isn't common, but because of rail's integral part of the transport system of the big country, it still sees quite a few passenger trains through.
f3-5th Infantry Brigade memorial bridge. It was commissioned shortly after the war of independence and crosses the Red Canyon River further down, over the more canyon-ish part.
f4-spur line down along the Red Canyon River. an oil depot exists far up the line, so every other morning, a long line of tank cars rolls down the track.
f5-another shot of the Laforey Tunnel at night. You can see the train about to enter the long dug up section just past the station. Next to the entrance is the Arguin Cormorant's stadium, the Fishing Hole. It's a popular stadium with the people of the Big Country, but still hasn't really reached any level of international attention for soccer players.
f6-the end of the line for freight in the big country. This is a sneek peek at what i've been doing in that cut out section of the map. This is the Claeston Seaport, which handles the majority of imported freight from the sea.
f7-Something I rummaged up, a nice twilight snapshot of the Thayerville terminal. Thayerville is at the near side of the bridge at the entrance of the river, for those of you who'd like to place it. This is largely an auxiliary por, but still recieves noticeable traffic.

Alright, time for replies!

That looks cool. I like the realism of how some of the locomotives are backwards and stuff. Good job, keep it up.
Thanks!

Original song.  Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are  a quasi-jazz group that really doesn't fit in a genre other than just calling them a jam band... which is vague in and of itself.  The great majority of their songs are instrumental.

See a video here:

Huh, that's really neat. He's playing electric Banjo? very different stuff. I like it.

Thanks! I liked the powerlines, myself. Overall, I think the feel came out pretty good.

Your new transparent lots are looking good. Only thing I might suggest would be to use Jestarr's Diesel Road Unit Prop as your engines instead of the automata props.
Well, now Peg's railfleet props are out, and I spied some nice ones in the picture that i'm probably going to fall back on (Namely the FT. I was salivating for that one ;) ). Thanks for the suggestion, tho!

Cheers, all! i'll talk to you guys again next week, hopefully!

You know - that is the best thing here: even if the pictures are not fully to my likings, I still have a pleasant stay with your choice of music !!

It's just a matter of taste: night pictures are not my favourite - probably because I don't see as much in the dark as others. The funny thing is however: I love pic f7 -the freightport - so even if this does not go with the song, it made me happy, and I am glad you posted it!!!!

Hey guys, really busy memorial day weekend for me, so I'll try and get you an update Monday or Tuesday this week! Sorry I've been so late with everything, but I recently started work at EMS and an internship at a nearby aquarium, so I'm completely drained.

Here's a quick update on what I've done with that rail line:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2Ftrainseyecandy.jpg&hash=e4dfa5a44ad931265f26f2185487384bf3b873b1)

PEGs engines are huge, yes, but they're much better models, so I decided to use them anyway. Maybe a scaled down set will be released to augment the normal one--that'd be awesome!

Have a good memorial day and watch a lot of war movies!

g1--View down from Hyugi Overlook, a popular local hill that has a nice path around a shallow valley and lake, then picks up into steeper trails before culminating in this overlook.
g2--The Fountainhead, source of Fountain brook. This is the most famous artesian spring in the area, said to be a place of calming for artists and thinkers. Some of The Big Country's greatest artists have painted the area from the pool.
g3--The Hyugi Mansion, established on an outcropping of Hyugi Hill. It has been the most important anthropogenic landmark of the mountains for hundreds of years.
g4--a misty trail path up Decca Summit. The mountain is the highest west of the river still in the Big Country, and is still a relatively easy day hike for novice hikers. The rewarding view has made it immensely popular, especially in the late summer months.
g5--Here is a view directly down Decca Summit. The ascent is very steep and has many switchbacks.
g6--A view of the Hyugi overlook from the front. The hill offers a nice view of the valley and the rail line. On a clear day, it is possible to see the ocean.

Well, technically a trestle is a different kind of bridge (one with lots of interlocking underbridge supports). But a lot of people do use it to describe smaller-scale rail bridges in general :)

You have shown some of the most realistic scenic areas in Sim City 4 that I have ever seen, it's no wonder you have won the OSITM. Well done my friend.
The update proved that your scenic area should be an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, fantastic job on the dirt paths and trees - especially the shot looking down the Decca Summit.

Alright guys, I've been working as much as I can on this, a full-time internship at the aquarium, and a part time job, and still trying to have a social life in between  :bomb: But things should be cooling down now and i should be back on some sort of schedule very soon. Aside from my personal woes, I have good news! I've finished an update (finally)!
Today we will be to the tune of Bob Dylan's Shelter From the Storm (http://youtube.com/watch?v=lRwKudE2Qdw) and the city and surrounding country of Kornari. Quite a great tune, really. And here we go!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25207%2Fcrossing.jpg&hash=8161d753e6a2569353e281bfa1b756f0295adb38)
h1
'Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25207%2FSunrisepath.jpg&hash=606b8398cc81b3aa3a1565eeb8b41073b6d23603)
h2
Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved.
Try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25207%2Fcity.jpg&hash=521bb3fd654017b003169abd71345734729cc07a)

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail,
Poisoned in the bushes an' blown out on the trail,
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn.

h5
Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair.
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25207%2FDaybreakriver.jpg&hash=307d8fd77732a88629e650287213b9374bd1ff27)
h6
Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it's doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25207%2Fstreamstorm.jpg&hash=b656a0bca86b10a8f091bd4ea9edf3a27d61eb81)
h7
In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation an' they gave me a lethal dose.
I offered up my innocence and got repaid with scorn.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25207%2Fhighway.jpg&hash=43c4665ecb3e42fb94b78c521aa17478d583a143)
h8
Now there's a wall between us, somethin' there's been lost
I took too much for granted, got my signals crossed.
Just to think that it all began on a long-forgotten morn.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25207%2FPathpond.jpg&hash=3a8481a093974f0470cc37cc715d513b06e109a3)
h9
Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine.
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi144.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr190%2Ftrebuchet77%2FBig%2520Country%2FUpdate%25207%2Fcitypath.jpg&hash=fe7fcb1dff0d8ab2a5ff0d61081d350655a5b1ae)
h10

h1-Highway bridge crosses Bedrock Stream, which over time has worn down much of the hill to its sheer rock underpinnings. It is a popular place to relax on a hot summer day because of all the small pools that form in the rock on its way down the hill.

h2-The tip of Nahielo lake, the remnants of a small glacier that sat in this valley. It had formed between 13-- and 1700, but environmentalists were unconcerned as it melted--it had been a product of the Little Ice Age, and slowly rising temperatures are to be expected.

h3-The downtown of Kornari, which exhibits slightly less modern architecture than the other major cities in the area. Kornari was actually the first major city to be formed around the corporate nucleus downtown.

h4-a storm on the edge of Kornari, where bedrock stream passes through the southern limits of downtown. The street leads down to a high-wealth development along the Laforey River

h5-Kornari is a hub for regional rail, with several stations in its district. Here we cross bedrock stream near its source during a pounding storm.

h6-The high wealth development along the edge of the laforey river. The paths in the woods are extensively used by bikers and joggers in the mornings.

h7- Bedrock stream in a storm. Here you can see the distinctive geology--not that other streams don't have these formations, but none have them in such quantities and concentrations.

h8-the highway takes a 90 degree turn along the edge of the Laforey River to cross the Napatune Brook, a notable river because of its relative length compared to most streams in The Big Country. The Napatune travels through several other townships as well.

h9-Nahielo lake, with a popular hiking trail skirting its edge. The trail leads up to the mountains around the lake and offers excellent views down the valley towards Kornari and the Laforey river.

h10-Downtown Kornari again, with the distinctive cobble path following the edge of the wall. Sunset views of the Laforey are often best taken from places along this cobble path.

Thats it for now, guys--I'll see you all later! Enjoy!

Dude, you are awesome for your use of RHW and you are an awesome chopper for being able to create such realistic rain. Say, in the fourth picture down, could I get a link to that huge diagonal silver building? Great work here, excellent. Your cities look insanely real, more real than I could ever do.

Thanks, everyone! I'll get to replies eventually (some day **sob**) Here's another smallish update:

This one is to a song by my favorite band, King Crimson. It's not entirely focused on the pictures, but it's still a great song and the tone is awesome. So, Here's I Talk To the Wind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUVFY1aWIuk&feature=related) by King Crimson. Please enjoy!

Just want you all to know, I'll be gone this coming week, so don't expect an update until late next week! Cheers, and thanks again for the honor of being in OSITM!

EDIT for those who are paying attention:

I have really bad news. My computer is dead, and we don't know who or what dunnit. Until we have revitalization, I don't know if anything is still there. We can hope.

Hoping against hope that I'd check in and see that your computer problems had been resolved and that this most excellent MD was back up and running.  That not being the case, TM, the hope now becomes that you find another computer- my guess is that the things that made The Big Country great would show right back up in a new work.  In any event, one fan (and I suspect many more) will certainly be waiting to see what happens.

Well, my computer is fixed, but it's been a while since I've played TBC region. I intend to start it up again when I install it on my new laptop (yay!) and transfer the old plugins and regions to it.

I had been working on another project on a different computer while this guy was fixed, so I'll show you that stuff for your patience, and just to prove i'm not completely lazy ;)

Cheers,
Matt

Good luck with the Plugins transfer. I keep my fingers crossed for you - no SC4 player deserves to lose any of their work in my opinion!!

A nice mix of contrasting styles you've just shown us.  From Brit suburbs to Med villages - ah yes, very nice.

OMG, an update. BUT, guys, I've got some bad news. It's not the same region! Yes, while I have the region, I found my attention had become diverted to another project (the one I was placating you all with earlier). So, the Big Country is now Greater Hyspatia, as I call it, and it's new logo is Horizons (working logo lol), though the journal will remain The Big Country, and the other region is intact (tho neglected) on my external hard drive. So, without further ado, I bring you the NEW Big Country.

Our song today is   Cities (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq05mWYsd-8&feature=related) by Talking Heads. Note this is video is most of the album. The first song is the only one that pertains, just so you know. It ends around 4 minutes into the video.
