  • Emil's Yards (Place - NE Quad Falls Twp - lat. ___° ___' ___" N / lon. ___° ___' ___" (center).)  "Emil's Yards" is a local name for an area at the upper end of the Big Bay di Noci that was originally settled by one Baron Emil den Svenske following his emigration to the region from Sweden in 1856.  den Svenke's arrival and choice of places to settle was very timely, as the Duluth, Winnepeg & Western Railroad reached the region from the south a decade later and built the yards and docks on den Svenske's land that served as its northern terminus for three years while the Wind River bridge was under construction.  This arrangement turned out to be quite lucrative for den Svenske, and by the 1880s he had parlayed his good fortune into ownership of virtually all the warehouse and grain terminal facilities in the region.  His financial backing was also instrumental in the construction of the Highland Spur line in the late 1880s to serve the newly discovered iron ore deposits in the far western reaches of the region.  Today, the descendants of den Svenske still own significant property interests in the Falls City port area, and "Emil's Yards" remains a busy center of the region's industries and rail and port infrastructure.

  • Far Pine Cone Island (Island - NE Quad Pine Cone Twp - lat. 48° 46' 48" N / lon. 94° 48' 18" W (center).  Map key 8-G)  Far Pine Cone Island is a 11.8 acre/4.8 hectare island off the northwest tip of Nike Site Point between Near and North Pine Cone Islands.  It is one of the five Pine Cone Islands (see main entry), and was apparently named Far Pine Cone Island because Near Pine Cone Island was closer to the first person who saw them, and because North Pince Cone Island was hidden behind it. Like Near Pine Cone Island, the island is low and forested, and has cobble beaches.  The island has a benchmark at it's highest point: it is 1,096 feet/344 meters above mean sea level and the hilltop is 40 feet/12 meters above the waters of Hotham Inlet.

  • Grand Valley (City - NW Quad Evendim Twp - lat. 48° 43' 49" N / lon. 95° 00' 55" W - elev. ___ ft/___ m amsl.  Map key 5-E)  Grand Valley is a charter city (1868) located adjacent to the City of Pineshore on the north.  It lies mainly in the "V" shaped area between the Grand and Cold Rivers north of their confluence.  The corporate limits also include Forked Tree Island in the Grand River and land east of that river up to the corporate limits of the City of Stewart  It derives its name from the valley of the Grand River between Grand Lake eight miles to the north and the river's mouth five miles to the south.  Population (2000 census): 13,833.  Local Government:  Mayor, 9 member City Council.  Police and Fire:  City Police Department, 23 officers, City Fire Department.  Medical Services:  Two for-profit hospitals:  Grand Valley General and HealthCo Wellness, four medical/emergency care clinics.  Postal Service:  3RRPS No. 3.  Air Service:  General aviation, runway length 5,600 ft/1,700 m and 3,900 ft/1,200 m paved, tower staffed 24/7, passenger terminal.  Rail Service:  Passenger, freight.  History and General Information:  Grand Valley was settled commencing in the late 1830s when emigrants from the area around Bielefeld, Germany located here along the edge of Townsite Bay.  The area was originally called, as a result, Germantown.  The new settlement grew quickly, as one of the first things constructed was an aqueduct (later changed to an underground pipeline) that drew water from several miles up the Cold River and provided sufficient head to power large mills constructed at the south end of the bay.  These mills and the company formed to operate them were called Bielefeld Mills, and they processed the abundant flax grown in the area into linen cloth that served the needs of the region, northern Minnesota and the Dakotas, and south-central Canada for the next 80 or so years.  A two mile/three km rail spur to serve the city, which was incorporated in 1868, was built from the DW&W RR line just east of the Cold River bridge in 1874.  The mills closed in the depression years of the 1930s and stood abandoned for the next 50 years.  In the 1980s, an extremely successful effort was launched to turn the giant structures into small business "incubators" by rehabbing them completely from top to bottom and offering space inside them out at very attractive rates.  As a result, Grand Valley is home to a large percentage of the region's high-tech and computer companies today, and the area is justly known locally as 3RR's "Silicon Valley."  Other influences of Grand Valley's first residents are seen in the beautiful original city hall (the city government now operates from the new (1996) government center complex) and the Old Water Tower, which both show a strong German character in their design.

  • Haystack Creek (Stream - NE Quad Pine Cone Twp - lat. 48° 46' 19" N / lon. 94° 46' 53" W (mouth) Map key 8-G)  Haystack Creek is a small, swift-running stream about four-tenths of a mile/three-quarters of a kilometer in length.  It rises from springs at the bottom of a small pond about one-half mile/.8 kilometers northwest of the City of Ellisport close to the tip of Iron Hook Cape.  It flows north into Diddicks Bay just southeast of the base of The Haystack (see entry).  There is a short stretch of rapids just upstream of the creek's mouth.

  • Hope (Village - SW Quad Bents Twp - lat. 49° 10' 17" N / lon. 95° 10' 50" W - elev. ___ ft/___ m amsl.)  Hope is a small village located just east of Elderberry Ridge, a prominent landform lying to the east of the Taylor Lakes.  Hope was originally a tent city named Sunrise Encampment that grew overnight when gold was discovered in the sands of the headwaters of the East Fork of Bent's River.  The source of its current name is not known.  Population (2000): 294.  Local Government:  None.  Police and Fire:  None.  Medical Services:  None.  Postal Service:  Rural Postal Station #31.  Air Service:  None.  Rail Service:  Duluth, Winnipeg & Western main line (freight only).  History and General Information:  Gold was discovered in 1858 by ________________, who was driving cattle from a ranch on the Taylor Lakes to Truman.  By 1859, a tent city of over 3,000 inhabitants had formed in the area just east of Elderberry Ridge along the banks of the river.  The Duluth, Winnipeg & Western reached the area in June, 1871, and a station was built but the easily found gold was pretty much gone.  The population fell to as low as about 20 residents in the early 1900's, but has been slowly climbing since the 1980s, mainly in connection with serving a small summer tourist trade, which comes to see Hope's well-preserved buildings and enjoy its laid-back atmosphere.

Shipping, commercial fishing, industrial manufacturing and a booming tourist trade are but a few of the many commercial enterprises spawned by this enormous bay.
