Title: Eagle Island
Post by: Cockatoo-210893 on January 20, 2008, 07:13:59 PM
Yep, I'm starting this up here at SC4D!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp11%2FParrotsSC4Photos%2FMainHeadst.jpg&hash=8eff835ef3ed804a848ba7c984111d8ad7e9fb13)

EAGLE ISLAND
National Park

by Cockatoo

I've had this project over at ST for a while now, but I've decided to start posting this CJ/ MD over here too because of the fact that you can post larger pictures here... which is awesome, and because I'm trying to become a little more active on these great forums that you guys have set up here.

If you want to see all the previous pictures and get the full outline of this project so far, then you can head over to the original CJ ---> Eagle Island on Simtropolis (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=95664&enterthread=y)
If not then here's the original introduction and some selected pictures from the first six updates. From now on, all updates will be posted here, as well as on ST, but this version will have the full sized images.....

Eagle Island National Park is the name of the region I've been developing over the past month, the map is actually made from a real life area somewhere in Canada but I've decided to make this a fictional region (not another re-creation). The basic theme of the MD is Canadian / North American styled cities with mountainous terrain and a temperate climate.

Franklin sound is a large U shaped lake in the middle of 2 protected mountain ranges and the inlet, Franklin Sound Inlet is where this MD begins. Built at the end of the Eagle Passage River, Franklin Sound Inlet is the largest city in the entire (mostly semi-rural or un-developed) region. It consists of a small central business district and a port which would be the main way to import and export goods in and out of Franklin sound. Most of Franklin Sound is protected by its national park status but the immediate area surrounding the inlet is allowed for development. Here's your first look at the region, the development in the bottom left hand corner is Franklin Sound Inlet and in this photo you can see the western half of the sound. Hopefully I'll be able to create more townships around the inlet and the edge of the outer edges sound as the project continues.

And here's some of my favorite images from updates one-six, all taken from the Franklin Sound Inlet CBD area and it's outskirts... yea, these ones have just been copied in from the ST version, but the future updates will take advantage of being able to post larger images. ;)

Quite average citybuilding, without awesome photoshopping this wouldn't be good.

Edit : This is a rude comment, you're entilted to your opinion but you'll need to provide at least constructive critism which I do not find in your sentence ~Wouanagaine~

I'll change it: Average citybuilding, too many different styles in one area; like football stadium next to Gare du Nord isn't fitting at all. Same thing with Opera house in the pic where Capitol Records Tower is, the Tower fits perfectly and looks great with photoshopping but opera house is  &mmm. Highways and trees looks very good, atleast your city has life - thing which is missing from most of the MDs.

I think the city building is above awesome.  I thought everything was very well thought out and executed perfectly.  Great work in photoshop as well, I am very envious.  I will be back to check this one out for sure.  Great job.

this must've taken forever to put together. my computer starts to have issues when I get at about that point with the level of BAT's in a area...

Whoa... I'm going to like this... so many great BATs I've never seen before.

Nice use of the PEG marina stuff. Where'd you get that huge tan resort area? Also, that normally awkward Maxis bridge works flawlessly there. Good job, keep it up.

Post by: paroch on January 21, 2008, 09:34:33 AM
I like this - ALOT

The PEG marina is very well executed.

My favourite pic is the night shot of the two hotels near the highway - SUPERB.

I can see what Krio is saying about the Opera House - but only after studying the picture for a long time.  It does seem out of place next to the apartments and overlooking the freight stations - but hey, in RL there are some awesome buildings in cities in less then prime locations.

Overall I think you've shown us some brilliant pictures here and I look forward to seeing Eagle Island develop here at SC4D.

Nice job, the composition of it all's excellent. But one thing stands out too much. The bridge approach to the bridge appears to be too steep. Perhaps you could give it a better gradient?

It looks like, though, you've made maximum possible use of the space available to you. Great work.

BTW, there's a typo in the "Eagle Island" thing below the header...

thundercrack83:  Thanks very much! I'm glad you liked the first updates.

Krio:  Mixed styles can be a good thing. The only thing I agree with you on is that the stadium needs to go, which I've been meaning to get rid of for a while.

rooker1:  Haha, well thanks Robin, good to hear that somebody likes the city building! Again, thanks for your nice comments.

bat: Hey thanks, glad you liked the first updates.

Zaphod:  Well, if it wasn't for the Dat Packer, I'm sure my computer wouldn't be able to handle all the stuff I have installed as well as it dose. Strangely it seems all just to flow nicely though... thanks for stopping by.

flame1396:  Wow, thanks mate. So many BAT's you've never seen before? Nearly all of it is off the STEX and probably about 20% of the LEX. Only about 1% would be from other sites, so I guess you have to go looking for it! Thanks for your nice comments.

TopCliff:  Hey thanks mate. As for the 'Tan Resort Area' you're talking about, do you mean the BAT's in the fourth picture from the bottom. If so, they are Bixel's two newest BAT's on the STEX. Thanks for your nice comments also!

paroch:  Hey thanks for your comments! Glad you liked what I did with the Pegasus stuff and Bixel's hotels. As for the Opera house, you don't know just how much that has cropped up, probably the most controversial building I've ever plopped! People in the Rate one Image thread, my CJ here and at ST have complained about it, but I like it there, I think it adds a lot of character to the area so it stays and that's final. Thanks for taking the time to write out such a well thought through comment, much appreciated!

Pat Riot:  Hehe, thanks Patriots.

Shadow Assassin:  Oh sh... I suck with typos! Thanks for noticing that! You're right about the bridge too, but there's a little problem with the slope mod I have installed at the moment and for some reason it won't let me build a perfectly sloped avenue on a lesser gradient. I'm sure there's something I could do to fix it but it's really just a minor problem, and I have moar important city building to do! Also, that image was taken about a month ago, I have actually managed to make the gradient just a little shallower since then. Thanks for commenting.

Hogmeister:  I said it in the first post, about a month. I'm glad you liked it though, thanks for stopping by.

Love the pics.  You city feels old.  As said earlier excellent use of space.  I have to agree with the bridge approach being to steep.  But, i also know it sometimes can't be helped because of the elevation on the other side.

Looks good cant wait to see more.

Really nice photos, Cockatoo-210893.
That interesting map makes me think this region can be turned into something spectacular.
Overall the CBD looks good, but I especially like the area near the harbor.
The night shots are my favorite, though, and the mosaic is beautiful.

Until next time...

•UPDATE TWO  Satelite CBD Part Two  23rd JANUARY 2008•
Okay, here's the second part of the Satellite CBD updates, of course some images from the first part can be found in the first post, because part one was posted at ST before I started this MD.  :P The Satellite CBD is the small urban area across the creek from the main one, which contains some smaller mostly residential (but some commercial) tower buildings, some light farming to the south and the cities garbage dump. It also contains some of the best BAT's ever produced thanks mostly to Pegasus, Prepo, Bixel and Odainsaker. Here's the update, enjoy!
By the way, I've tried to make these .jpg files as small as possible, only about 250kb each, for you dial up users.

kimcar:  Hey thanks, I just wanted to post that many so people here on SC4D could get up to speed with where this project it at. Thanks for stopping by!

getdown11:  Thanks, and about the bridge, it doesn't have anything to do with the elevation on the other side, rather to do with my slope mod as like I told Shadow, Thanks.

Jmouse:  Hey thanks, and you're right, the region is very beautiful, one of the best I could find on the entire STEX. Thanks for your nice comments mate!

Nice update, Cockatoo-210893.
I'd like to single out a few photos, but that doesn't mean I don't like the rest! :)
I like the power plant in the second one -- very realistic. I see a couple of veryminor details that are a bit puzzling, but no big deal.
The nighttime mosaic is to die for, and I love the triangle-shaped building in the fourth pic. Later on, if you have the time and inclination, I'd enjoy seeing some captions describing the content and explaining how the photo fits into the grand scheme of things. (And does it really help to flip the photos?! ;))
In the next-to-last one, I'm curious about those things are sticking out over the highway. They look sort of like scenic overlooks and I wonder where you got them.
And of course, the best is for last. The fire photo is exceptional.

reminds me of Ale King of Sim City's journals. Thats like the best complement i can give out right there.

Seriously, I love your playing style, and that fire was really great.

Like the atmosphere in this MD. It's wonderful!

The images have a crispness to them... the building is non-linear (ie. griddy).

I'm no MD expert, but I like what I see!

I cannot get over how impressive these pictures are, Cockatoo! Your highways, the placement of everything--it looks like you've put a lot of time into it, and that's before the magnificent Photoshopping you do, too. I can't wait to see what you're going do to next!

...Later on, if you have the time and inclination, I'd enjoy seeing some captions describing the content and explaining how the photo fits into the grand scheme of things. (And does it really help to flip the photos?! ;))...
Until next time...
Joan

Yea, because I have a habit of flipping pictures, and only posting pictures that are taken on zooms 3,4 or 5, then I can really understand if it's hard for you to get a picture of the overall city in your head, because as of yet, I haven't posted any overall city images that show 'the grand scheme of things'.
Maybe this'll help you out.

Here's a Region Census satellite image of the Franklin Sound Inlet city:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp11%2FParrotsSC4Photos%2FCity-FranklinSoundInlet.jpg&hash=c1f92d315322001088ed3a055921613007ccf5a7)

And here's a little map I made to help you get an idea of where the districts are and how they all fit together, also you can see where the main waterways are:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp11%2FParrotsSC4Photos%2FCity-FranklinSoundInlet-Map.jpg&hash=bf5f7f81264d5145ccf225cb040fe2d26d83b5f2)

Red-  The Main CBD
Green-  The Satellite CBD
Orange-  The Port and Suburban Area
Light Blue-  The Holiday District (With PEG's Mountain Homes)
Yellow-  The Garbage Dump
Dark Blue-  The Farming District
White-  The Hotel District

This is only one tile? Impressive, though it shows SC4's "lack of realism" when trying to build large regionwide cities when you can make quite realistic city to one tile.

Great work!  Whereas others didn't like the many different styles, I think it actually is more realistic... SOME cities (or rather, parts of cities, like Paris) are similar in style, but if you look at the majority of large cities, they are a conglomeration of lots of different styles, especially modern ones.

Replies:
TopCliff:  Thanks TopCliff! I'm really enjoying working with the SAM at the moment, glad you think I'm doing a good job with it. Thanks for coming by.

flame1396:  Ah thank you! Really glad you liked the fire... that took forever to get just right.

Jmouse:  Haha, yep, I just wanted to fill in that area as quickly as possible. I know that the random power line and the un-connected transformers don't really make much sense, I should really re-do that. Hopefully the maps that I put together helped you see how everything fits into the grand scheme, but I do like to mirror my images, it gives a real nice perspective to them.

Pat Riot:  Well thanks! As soon as people see those Buddybud Sunken Rural Highway pieces, they tend to automatically think, AK, because he uses them in just about every one of his cities. I have taken a little inspiration from his work and applied it to this city, but I tried to keep it mostly in my own style. Thanks very much for your nice comments, and I'm real glad that you like my playing style and the fire effects! Hope to see ya back Patriots!

beskhu3epnm:  Well thanks! I really did go out of my way to make sure that the transport network wasn't griddy, yet still flowing. Thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you like what you see!

Bat:  Hey thanks Bat! Glad you liked the mosaic!

kimcar:  Thank you! Good to get so much feedback about the Mosaic, glad you liked it too.

oyd:  Thanks oyd, real glad that you like the night images, my Photoshoping tends to bring them out.

rooker1:  Thanks Robin, those fire effects are very simple to make if you know what you're doing. Basically its just grab a bunch of fire and smoke images off the internet and rub out the backgrounds... well basically, then you have to play with the paint and smudge brushes to make it blend in with the background and brightness / contrast , colour balance ect... you get the idea. Real goad you liked the update and hope to see you back again soon!

thundercrack83:  Wow thanks! It's really great to get feedback like that! Yes, and I have put a fair amount of time into this CJ / MD project so far. Thanks again for your really nice comments!

Krio:  Yep, so far only one large city tile, although keep in mind that this is supposed to be a scaled down CBD, Ofcourse I plan to extend the suburban area's down the river banks to the East and West and eventually into smaller townships.

Pat Riot:  Thanks! Glad you like the region shot, and yes, you should see that ship next to the Maxis one. I think it's actually one of Jeronij's BAT'd ships. Thanks for stopping by again.

Jmouse:  Oh excellent! I made it onto someones desktop! And I'm glad that the region views helped you out, thanks for dropping in again!

Berethor:  Hey thanks! Really glad you liked the updates, hope to see you back again.

Bat:  Thanks again Bat! Good that you've liked what I've done.

thundercrack83:  Well thanks! Good to hear that you like the development of Franklin Sound Inlet so far!

nova vesfalo:  Ah, ST lurkers are popping up on SC4D now eh, that's great! Thank you for your nice comments and really glad you like what I've done so far.

CabraBuitre: Oh yea, well of course. I can't really think of any city that I've been to where the entire city has just been built in the one style. I mean you're gonna have you're Chinese Districts, Ghettos, Wealthy Suburbs, CBD's with all sorts of different styles of architecture.... And the list goes on. People have said that this city has more of an older feel to it, but I still think it's realistic to have mixed and changing styles.

Tooheys:  Yea, thanks mate! (Mate, because you're an Aussie, and yesterday was Australia Day!) I'm real glad that you liked the mosaic and the picture with all the row-homes. Again, thanks for your exceptionally nice comments! Hope to see you back Dave.

Jeronij:  Wow... a comment from the great Jeronij... didn't expect that! Sorry about having to push it over to the next page, although that was honestly so that people didn't have to sit there for 10min and wait for all the pictures to load, nothing to do with me wanting a higher reply count or anything like that (Although it won't happen again, because updates will be smaller than that first big post). Well thanks very much for such a nice comment anyway! Really glad that you liked it and I'm happy to be sharing it on this great site that you've set up.

Hi Cockatoo.

Beautiful work as always. The pic's are great and I really like that library (well I'm guessing that what it is anyway  :) )

The use of rowhouses/townhouses is supurb, although as I mentioned in the photo comp, these are some of my favourite lots .

If anything, can I ask what water mod you are using. The boats look like they are floating on air and not water. Anyway, just a minor thing.

This MD should go far.

Few things bugs me:
You have plopped the Stickmann Department Store twice and they are too too near each other. You could have used ferox's corners to replace second Stickmann.
Highway going up and down, make it going on flat land like they usually go.
Queen Street Corner by Tonks needs something next to it, it does not work (like my Huomisaukio 5 which is Tonkso replica) alone.

Good things:
Subway looks FRESH. Must go there when lunch :P I'm late from school, so I could visit there before going to class ;D
Regal on fire

Gotta go with Love!
I've been out of pocket for a week or so and I'm trying to catch up, so bear with me.
All the photos look great -- the mosaic is awesome -- but for some reason, the garbage dump grabbed my attention. Garbage isn't a pleasant subject, but since it happens it has to be dealt with somehow. Well, you've created a very realistic waste-management area and you have my compliments.

Until next time...

Okay...here I go.

:o

Wow, I can't even begin...

:o

Okay, I think I can...

:o

*Stop looking at those pictures, you'll never get this out!*  All right.  Really, I should ban you from the Picture Contest.  I should.  You should never, ever be allowed to post a picture up against someone else.  It should be ethically unsound, morally wrong and socially unacceptable.  It just...it just wouldn't be fair!  These pictures are just...

:o

Dammit!...well, they're awe-inspiring!  The very first picture, it's just amazing!  The angles produce such an eye-pleasing effect...right up against that awesome park.  The color filter is just so perfect in its subtleness!  I just wish I could swing on that swing!

I think that's something that I noticed in a lot of your pictures: you use a lot of subtle tone-setting effects.  Like the third picture, it looks like you have an almost-unnoticeable light effect right in the middle there, and the slight shadow it gives to each corner is just perfect!

I really appreciate that picture of the car-compacting plant.  That is definitely something new for me to see in SC4...it's cool to showcase it like you do, because it really gives your city a more realistic flair having the grimier, NIMBY-type lots there.

I'd comment on your mosaic, but you'd just get a lot more of

:o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o

In all seriousness, these are some of the best SC4 pictures I have ever seen...and well, I've seen a lot ;).  I could never ban you from that contest, because each and every one of these pictures would be perfectly at home in the Hall of Fame.  I don't know what more to say...inspiring work!  thundercrack83 said it for me: I just want to play after seeing this, but I would be disappointed $%Grinno$%.

One more for the road:

:o
Amazing, sir, simply amazing &apls!

•UPDATE FOUR  SC4D Exclusive: Eagle Island Floods  2nd FEBRUARY 2008•
Oh my god! Special Interest This Month! What can I say...  :-[ :D
I've decided to make a special update just for SC4D, showing something I made just for a laugh today using the rain mod on Franklin Sound Inlet and some Hurricane/ Flood type photo effects that I kinda made up as I went along... anyways enjoy! Note that sunken railways and highways mixed with the rain mod became creative new ways to make canals!

And yea, the following update will be the fourth part of the Satellite CBD updates.

Replies:
iamgoingtoeatyou:  Hey thanks for stopping in Hotdogs! Well it's great to get feedback like that, and I'm thrilled that you like my mosaic, seems as you are the king of them.

TopCliff:  Thanks again TopCliff! Real good to hear. I'm actually not sure who made that library, but you're right, it's a fantastic BAT! And I will try and keep it coming!

thundercrack83:  Oh, well thanks Dustin! Really great to hear something like that, you know you've done something right when other people say that you're stuff makes them want to play SC4 all night, and I'm sure you'd be able to match my cities if you really wanted to. Thanks for stopping by!

beskhu3epnm:  Yea, well that's what the Photoshoping is all about really. Trying to create an atmosphere of all more realism and it's good that you find it easy to return to this MD! Thanks very much for your nice comments and come again!

jmyers2043:  Thanks, good to hear that you liked the scrap yard! I was really surprised at how well I think it turned out, mostly because of the extremely realistic lots that people have made over the years. Thanks for stopping by.

Mpol:  Well thanks MATE! Inspiring eh? Well that's fantastic to hear. Have fun building your city and thanks for stopping by.

Berethor:  Hey thanks, real glad that you liked the mosaic.

bat:  Thanks again Bat! Thank you for your nice comments and real glad that you liked my mosaic.

Pat Riot:  Yea, on fire alright, I think it's about to explode or something going by the colour of those flames! And as for that effect that you keep asking about...
Your reply from ST that you missed:
patriots_1228: The glow, I actually made that using the Soft Focus effect, it adds halo's of light around bright spots on image and adds a glowing effect to night images and a foggy effect to day time ones.
And real glad that Eagle Island has made it onto your top 5 too, that's a real big complement!

marcszar:  Hey thanks! Really glad you like the Photoshoping, considering what I've seen in some of your pics! Hehe, and who would like to be mah personal SC4D Body Guard? Thanks for your nice comments mate.

tooheys:  Hey thanks again! That's all really good to hear. As for what water mod I'm using, it's just one of Pegasus' ones off the STEX (His most popular one that everybody seems to use.) The only problem with it is that at shallow depths, it's extremely transparent and if you use BAT's that float on the surface, it can seem as if they are floating on air.

Krio:  Okay, I will consider what you have said, you're probably right about the bumping highway. Glad that you liked the fire though, hope to see you nit pick through this update too and see what you don't like so I can improve! Thanks for stopping by.

Mpol:  No, it's actually just like that normally, like I explained to tooheys. Although I think the Photoshoping did enhance it a little by changing the colour to sunset ones.

kimcar:  Okay, thanks for commenting. There are a few things I'm not quite sure I understand in your post, but it's great to hear that you like my Photoshoping. Thanks for taking the time to look through the updates!

Jmouse:  Oh thanks, great to hear. I'm really glad that you like the mosaic and the dump... yes, I guess the garbage has to go somewhere and I'M NOT building one of those evil Maxis landfills in my city. Thanks for taking the time to look through the update!

Masochist:  WOW! That's probably the best comment I've ever bloody got!
Haha, you can't ban me from the photo contest... lol! I have to warp this up quickly and I'd love to sit here and write a big thank you reply to you for that excellent comment, but I have to get this out, so I'll just say this. That really gave me the motivation to get up today and pump out this update, especially after seeing where this got moved to overnight. Thanks a million.

NASCAR_Guy:  Wow, Chicago eh? I wouldn't have guessed that, but thanks anyway and I'm real glad that you find it realistic!

thundercrack83:  Oh my God! THANKYOU THUNDERCRACK! I never imagined that I'd win something like this so soon... how long have I been active on here for...

rooker1: Wow, thanks so much.

mightygoose:  Hehe, if the Corel corporation can be counted as the devil, and buying a rather expensive version of Paint Shop Pro counts as selling your soul, then yes. Real glad you liked it, great to get comments like that.

Jmouse:  Oh well thanks a lot! I take that as a real complement.

paroch:  Hey thanks so much. Great to hear so much back about that mosaic too, I really have to make more of them. Hope to see you back soon... for this special month, at least for this MD anyway!

It's my first time here (prooving the OSITM is one of the best inventions ever). You are building a great city, and your pictures are made very nice too. The floods are just amazing   :o

The SES are busy enough as it is (well in NSW anyway), and now you spring this upon them  $%Grinno$%

Nice effects, although the stadium must have watertight doors  ;D

That is one hell of a flood, some of the buildings must be sitting in 30-40ft of water, global warming sucks  ::)

Seriously though, the flood effect with the accompanying downpour looks great.  Will have to try that in a few of
my cities to see what happens.

Well done, and congrats on move to OSITM. This MD is certainly a pleasure to follow.

Cheers

Dave

PS: If you haven't noticed by now, I like to have a bit of fun, if I ever cause any offence, please let me know.

Hey, This is my first time here (don't you just love OSITM) and I'm sure it won't be my last! The photoshopping here is just absolutely mind-blowing. I love the water ripples in that last pic.

Fred

EDIT: About the poll, I can't see a way to delete it, it might be admins only?

Those are some impressive PhotoShopping skills you have there, Cockatoo. I especially like the first photo.
Also I'm wondering which wall set you're using in the last two pics.

Until next time...

thanks. I stopped checking ST once you posted it here :D

The flooding is fantastic, once again spectacular photoshopping. The last one looks great, i can't tell what you did, although im guessing you used the ripple effect somewhere.

LOL...very quick comment this time, but your update reminded me of Highway 59 in Houston after a tropical storm hit it:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi17.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb99%2FJetWarrior%2FOther%2520Pictures%2FHywy59allisonflood.jpg&hash=3f9fe038232d733817f7cf97fd2c124abf9cc6ab)

You're right...that's a very efficient way to make a canal! :D
Seriously amazing pictures &apls!  Maybe you could divulge the photoshopping secrets of that water on the last picture, eh ;)?

Next update we'll be back to the normal not-so-edited pictures. There's a new area in the pipeline as well as some more of the satellite CBD coming up that I haven't shown yet so stay tuned.
Oh yea, and just quickly before I go, I noticed that four people seem to think that you can delete polls from your threads, would any of those four care to tell me how, thanks in advance- I just can't work out how you do it!

As for the polls, I can't seem to find a way to delete it either, so who knows? I'll ask around, though! Can't wait for the next update!

Well, I wasn't one of those four, but I know in the polls that I've created in other threads, there are a bunch of options right above the "Quick Reply" box.  The last one of these is "Remove Poll."  I don't know if it's there because I started the thread or because I'm a mod in that specific part of the site, but I know that it's possible ;).

First of all: congratulations on the award! &apls

Second: You obviously have incredible picture editing skills - all the shots are extremly well executed. It is also obvious that your building skills are just as good as your editing (very well combined BAT:s in a realistically developed area) so I hope that you will show us some unedited shots in the future too (it's a bit hard to make out all the nice details when the editing is so extensive).

Anyways: Hoping to see much more beautiful pictures from you.

This doesn't really even classify an update, these are just some images that I made for my Hong Kong CJ over at ST, and I thought I'd show you guys too.
I'm posting them here because SC4D has a strict one MD at a time rule, so I can't set up Hong Kong over here, but I really want to show them here too. Anyway, here are just some random pics of the Central District photoshopped at night. Enjoy!

Let me be the first to say: amazing work. You've nailed the lights, and the overall setup of the buildings seems well planned as well. The only thing I would critique would be the reflection in the water of the second picture. It's a great touch, but for as choppy as that water is, I don't think that the reflection would be visible (or as visible). Exceptionally well done.

Title: Re: Eagle Island
Post by: tooheys on February 15, 2008, 03:44:35 AM
Some fine pics, 1, 3 & 4 are my favourites.

You really do bring a city together nicely and I enjoy your photoshopping. But I agree with threestooges, there should be no reflection of the building in the second pic. The last pic, well I just don't think that reflection is possible, given the buildings along the shoreline don't even feature.

Don't get me wrong, I couldn't get these sort of effects if I tried, but no matter how great the pic, the oddities always tend to stand out. Having said that, I like the mirror effect, its's just a case of the angle of the dangle ;)

Cheers

Dave

•UPDATE SIX  Hammond Port Part One  8th MARCH 2008•
You all thought I was dead didn't you, well you were wrong! It's just that school and everything else has been severely restricting my free time  ... not to worry though!
Over the last three weeks I've been building a rather large new town on the shores of Hammond bay, a little south of Franklin sound- it's called Hammond Port. It's a little more spread out but not as high-rise as Franklin Sound Inlet and uses heaps of different styles of architecture that you'll probably hate when there all mixed together... but I like the way it worked out. Unlike Franklin Sound Inlet, this city is mostly grown, so I just decided to take the 'go with the flow' approach and let anything that wanted to grow, grow- Japanese, French, Northern American, European, Asian... I think there's even a mosque in there somewhere! It also uses one of the most complicated transit networks I've ever built.
Basically, the town consists of a smallish Downtown with suburban sprawl all around and a large PEGASUS port lining the coast line. Here's teh map...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp11%2FParrotsSC4Photos%2FCity-HammondPort-Map.jpg&hash=9706c7c5c77ba7503608fece5c5ca73a0b32bf81)

I would remove Maxis, they aren't fitting to city (or photoshop them more darker). Then, why on Earth you have two empty eyecandy-avenues going under railroad and then overcrowded looking normal road having 3 railroadcrossings  :-\ and though Xannepans's rounabout is awesome, its doesn't look good in your city IMO. Sorry  &mmm

EDIT: There is not one, single positive thing you can say about anything in the entire update? Friendly, constructive criticism is one thing, but I think we can do better, my friend. - Dustin (thundercrack83)

Wouldn't it be such a pain to try and cross 5 road / rail crossings in a row (and the second one is just for the sake of the garden)... don't you think it's just easier to go under? I don't care about the small amount of Maxis buildings in the mix and seriously dude, who cares about the placement of a round-a-bout.
I put a lot of effort into this, and I don't really need those stupid little issues pointed out. If you want to criticize me, then that's fine but try and look at the big picture. I'm not going back and changing any of that.

EDIT: Edited for language. - Dustin (thundercrack83)

Some of these pics are incredibly realistic. Photoshopping is perhaps the best on devotion. Great work cocka-2

Fantastic job.

I got a bit worried when you talked about all the different building styles you used in the opening, but it actually works really well. The mix might not be realistic, but because of the way it's been used, and how thoroughly the transit network is done, all those styles come together in a strange way. The city doesn't really look like anything I've seen before, but it works. The photoshopping really helps top it all of and give it a nice finish.

Can't wait for more.

Cockatoo what a great update. I stared at each of your pictures for a couple of minutes - and I love them (except the palms  ;) ) .

The snow mountains look soo natural, how on earth did you do that?
Your road and rail lay out is incredible, the tunnels and crossing everywhere... Also the waterfronts look great. This image (http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p11/ParrotsSC4Photos/HAP10sc4d.jpg) is absolutely gorgeous!

Well, some positive things what I forgot to say: Times Square-look-a-like looks pretty good. The empty street during storm makes realistic. And night pictures from harbour area looks nice, maybe too much light in trees)

And making some corrections:
If you're trying to make realistic and good looking city, drop the crossing of and leave underpasses there. Of course it makes the traffic worse in your city, but in real world there would be no such crossing after underpasses have been built. And xannepan's building would work better in that enviorment without roundabout, now its just sitting there with "roads that have no purpose" and it doesn't fit with Tonks' railwaystation. I respect your effort, but little more work and it would be better. Miami Tint (I remember it was yours) was better than this has been so far.

The mountains look incredible.  Picture 13 (the first of the waterfront-at-night pictures) has got to be one of the best night shots I've ever seen... just beautiful!  I really like the mix of wall to wall buildings with those that stand alone... very realistic in my (admittedly limited) experience.  The only thing that really sticks out to me is the small commercial area between the two EL tracks... it just seems so dead compared with the surroundings.

... but not that good!! $%Grinno$%

That is incredible work. I never have the patience to create that much detail in a city :-[

•UPDATE SEVEN  Hawke Bay Part One  9th APRIL 2008•
Hey, long time no see, SC4D. Sorry... I would have posted these updates ages ago, but this site's been having so much downtime lately so I couldn't.
--- APRIL FOOLS UPDATE ON ST --- (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=95664&STARTPAGE=8)
Hehe, yea that one was a laugh...  &sly
Okay, and here's some of the serious stuff I've been working on over the last 3 weeks - Hawke Bay, An NYC style of metropolis with 3 separate downtowns separated by a rail and park system. Here's some overview shots while it was still a work in progress...
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p11/ParrotsSC4Photos/EITE1.jpg (http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p11/ParrotsSC4Photos/EITE1.jpg)
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p11/ParrotsSC4Photos/EITE2.jpg (http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p11/ParrotsSC4Photos/EITE2.jpg)

Oh yea, here's a lot I created for the base plaza of the AON Centre and Jardine House towers, using the buildings from the WTC base plaza:

And here's your update, the higher wealth area is the patch of glass towers nearer to the waterfront, where the mid/lower wealth areas are the patches of NYC style buildings further back.

rooker1:  Hey thanks rooker! Glad you liked the Photoshoping, you just need to spend a little time practicing and playing around with your photo editing program, and you just learn what effects to use and how to make Sim City pictures look more realistic.

bat:  Thanks bat. Good to hear that you like the downtown. Here's some more...

sithlrd98:  Hehe, welcome to the island... I knew watermarking the pics would pay off somehow. Thanks for your nice comments, and I'm real glad that you liked the night pictures and the water effects on the previous page, thanks for dropping by.

bighead99999:  Hey thanks, glad that you liked the water effects too.

JBSimio:  Thanks a lot, good to hear that you like the night images, btw, your new SHUR series BAT's are just excellent, they are always a nice addition to any of my cities (as you can see) and they grow really well too. The way you've done that interior night lighting is just amazing, I'm always trying to get that sort of effect on some of my BAT's too, but I can never pull it off quite as well as you did, well done, I look forward to downloading more.

Pat Riot:  Well thanks a-freaking-lot patriots! Really glad you think so, great to get feedback like that.

Hogmeister:  Hey thanks, good that you think that the buildings are working well together! Normally I get comments saying the opposite! I guess that what I've created is kinda similar to real life cities in terms of layout, but most of the BAT's I've used are top quality ones - and not too gritty either, so it may appear slightly cleaner and friendlier than say, New York, which was one of the cities it was based on. Thanks for your nice comments.

Fantastic photoshopping work mate! This is one of the most impressive downtowns I have seen. &apls The trees, buildings, cars, sims... it's soo alive! It's the metropolis that never sleeps! :P Can't wait to see more.

Please could you give me a link to the circle building in this picture, Thanks. -
