@strucka: It is. Also ist's younger brother Desiro ML, found in alota parts of europ - even russia (as DesiroRUS)

That's because it has got a better quality than bombardier's talent1 (Talent 2 is a reeeeeal crap, does not work properly, still many troubles of getting it into service and the design is.... well.... crap.)


But I actually might be able to get a pic of a german Desiro before getting one of an austrian desiro to my gallery xD

@nexis4Jersey: Interesting, I would love to see these big Diesels hauling some long and heavy freight trains up a nice mountain pass! 

@io_bg: If I remember correctly the last train I took from Istanbul to Plovdiv was a Desiro. Had some troubles then because the railway line between Dimitrovgrad and Plovdiv was partially closed to due construction.

I think I forgot to post the linkie to the other pics ... 

@art128: That's because they are going as "trains" until the city border of Karlsruhe and as "tramway" inside Karlsruhe.
That asymmetric shape was necessary in order to let two motorcars of that type pass together the short radius curves of the tramway lines.
This type of trains has the doors only on the right side because it is only used in one direction and turned around in terminal loops at the end of the line(s).

There are trains with doors on both sides, too. These have symmetric faces.

The difference can be explained by the different type of metro line they serve:

The first type stays on the "old" AVG lines. These are all equipped in a way that each platform is on the right side (in the direction of the train) and each terminal station has a loop to turn the motorcars. The "back" control is only used for shunting manoeuvres and if a loop cannot be accessed e.g. because of snow etc.
These cars only run under 750V DC

The second type can run on all German electrified railway lines. Since the platforms can be on the left or on the right side these motorcars have doors on both sides. They are two-system-motorcars as the tramway / metro network in/around Karlsruhe uses 750V DC while German railways uses 15KV AC
