Title: Help wanted on operating system decision for new PC (compatibility questions)
Post by: MandelSoft on November 12, 2012, 11:38:39 PM
So, I have the feeling that my PC is running on its last legs (more crashing and bugs showing up) and I don't know how much it will hold any longer. So I was considering getting a new PC...

But before I buy one, I would like to ask all of you: does someone has experience with running SimCity 4 on Windows 7 64-bit? (or Windows 8 for that matter). If so, does anyone know if the following programs work on that OS?

- iLive's Reader
- GIMP
- Lot Editor
- gMax

Switching PCs data-wise wouldn't be too much of a problem, since I have everything on a external HDD back-up.

I'd like to hear your comments.

Best,
Maarten

I've been running SC4 on Win7 64-bit for awhile now and haven't encountered any specific compatibility issues, I've used GIMP, Lot Editor and iLive's Reader (the 0.97 version) smoothly as well, but haven't tested gmax.

None of the programs you mention should be any problem on a win 7 64bit system. I know, as my own computer runs this OS. I don't know about gmax for sure, though, as I have never used that myself.

Depending on what hardware/setup of your computer you get, you might have to tweek sc4 and/or LE a bit, but that shouldn't be too much trouble. All the help you need for that can be found in the tutorials pages on this very site.

I've been running the preview version of Windows 8 for awhile now, and I was running Windows 7 64-bit before that.  I've had no problems with running SC4 and related utilities on either.  There are some special tricks you'll need to do for some older tools, like SC4 Mapper, etc., with both OSes, but once that's taken care of, there's no issue.

Win7 x64 has been working well for me also, though I don't use G-MAX either. I've really liked Win7 so far but I think I will take advantage of my $15 offer to upgrade to Win8 eventually. Almost the only hassles I've had switching to this computer was forgetting CAM, extra cheats, and everything else that didn't work just from copying my plugins over  ::)

OK, everyone thanks for the input. I think a Win7 64-bit PC will be the best bet. Let's see if I can get a discount for buying an "older" OS :D

Maarten, do yourself a favour and buy a PC with an SSD in it, as it makes SC4 load so, so much faster. Personal recommendations: Crucial M4 and Samsung 830.
Also, building your own PC usually works out considerably cheaper than buying an OEM one (and it doesn't come with any bloatware either if you build it yourself). This also means you can still go with Win7 x64 instead of Windows 8.

If you use Win 7 64x and probably Win 8 too: for using PimX or Sc4-Pim (whatever name you prefer) you need the fix by Casper.
Otherwise Lot Editor, Region Census, Datpack, Reader work without any problem. Terraformer apparently does not work. Pityfully.
