Title: SC4D DVD
Post by: BarbyW on August 04, 2008, 04:24:13 AM
I am currently trying to compile the contents of the first SC4D DVD that will essentially be a Starter/Back up DVD with some exclusive content. The DVD will be available to people who donate a yet to be agreed amount to the site.

It will have the following categories although the contents are not yet finalised:

Quote
Agriculture
Canals and Waterways
Civic - sub folders Education/Health/Security
Commercials
Dependencies - subfolders Props/Textures/Model Packs
Industrials
Residentials
SNM
Tools
Transport
Utilities
Waterfront
Parks and Sports Fields
Mods and Terrain Mods

Each folder /sub folder will have separate folders for each creator.

I need to have permission from all contributors to the LEX to include their work on the DVD so would ask all non BSC members to say if they are willing to allow their work to be included and post in this thread.

I would appreciate it if Masuda-san could liaise with the Japanese BATters who have model packs on the LEX to gain their permission for this.

Now that would be handy, especially since I'm overwhelmed by the content that's on the exchange due to a long absence from SC4

Hi Barby,

I know us NUTs are associates to the BSC, so not sure whether I need to post here but YES absolutely.  My stuff on LEX is fine to be included.  If you need me to do anything to make it ready just let me know.

Great Idea, can't wait at all  :)

If you want to include the HSRP or the GTM then that's a yes from me.   :thumbsup:

Hmm, since the HSRP is a NAM plugin, it's probably better not to include it in the DVD if the NAM is not present. But if there is a new NAM ready when the DVD gets available, we might be able to produce a "complete package" with all NAM related content.  :)

The DVD is coming together and I hope to have the contents finalised in the next two weeks. There will be some exclusive content from Colyn and a very special exclusive that has been long awaited. Some sneak peeks may be available soon so watch this space.

This will be a nice addition the SC4 Devotion. If you decide to add maps to the DVD you have my permission to add any of the maps I have created. By the way they should be posted to the LEX very soon.

Great teasers!

Last ones are quite easy, but I must find Color Inverter and Deripplerizer to look at previous ones  :D

Btw Barby, if you want to use any of my small mods in the DVD, you have my permission of course. The slope mod is probably not for all, but the Diagonal Jagged Edges Mod can be useful for various walls, waterfronts etc.

Actually the dollar has rebounded from it's really low period in July and is normalising...In any case the Paypal donation currency is set for Euros but that doesn't mean you have to have a Euro account....Paypal accepts most credit cards from most countries.

Just under 4GB but there are some maps and also Wouanagaine's programs plus NAM and all cycledogg's terrain mods. Probably about 3GB content including ALL BSC Dependency packs and an assortment of other models that their creators have generously allowed us to include.
There will be quite a lot of exclusives that will be revealed over the coming weeks including one very special one that has been long awaited.

I can safely say that all SFBT creations are on the DVD as well, including some that were never released in the English community so far. :) Of course, all of them have been checked again and a few bugs have been fixed. The NAM files were also updated to eliminate all known bugs, and there might be the occasional surprise hidden in the files. ;)

Try looking at the original on GoogleEarth and see how close to the original the lot is. I took a lot of time to try to get as close to the real thing as I could within the constraints of SC4. There are also very few Maxis trees as most are cycledogg's.

Since the Marina is a project that barely has been started,
and the master DVD is already burnt, I cannot really see how he would manage that... ::)

You'd be surprised....but at the same time correct  :thumbsup:

Not a hope at the mo, I have 375 (yes, that wasn't a typo) product models to render in full colour, wireframe and exploded to get done by the middle of the month, so all my 3D time is spent on this.

Time to start guessing at the big project. This has been a long time in the making so guesses here please:

I also have a confession to make. Somehow I omitted Yoder7652's Basilica from the DVD but the good news is that it will now not be a DVD exclusive and will be uploaded to the LEX next week.

I think the price should be based on a gentleman's agreement where the sum is never asked or discussed but always known.

Post by: BarbyW on November 16, 2008, 01:54:10 AM
In ancient times - well 2004 :D,
kd5rax made a BAT of Petronas Towers. He asked BSC for help to improve his initial models;
Rubik3 continued and finished the modelling;
Colyn spent over 500 hours (and bought a new computer) to render the models;
Grover_G drew up the lots design;
Geoffhaw made all the custom textures;
CJMarshall did the pathing for the network enabling;
Colyn made the lot;
Daeley did the reward programming.
After testing there was an immediate problem. The package was almost 20MB and could not be uploaded to an exchange at the time. So it sat waiting for an opportunity to be allowed out in public. The SC4DVD was proposed and Petronas offered itself for inclusion.
Phase two of Petronas life began. BarbyW updated the modding using the X_Tool and Diggis made a new lake.
This has been a true community co-operative effort and will be only available on the DVD. It needs CAM to function properly. I have had Petronas in a region now for many sim years and after some initial dilapidation it has remained stable and fully functional since.
So I present you - Petronas Towers - jewel of the DVD:

Well what can I say ... at a stage I thought this marvel of BAT and BSC Effort (Petronas Towers) will be gathering dust on my computer. The size just simply made distribution basically impossible. The mere size of the package was a big problem and in the end I was the only one with the full package. Once the DVD became a certainty the package was sent to Callagan callagrafx and Barby and from there the BSC worked on it.

Just as a side note ... Caliban and Cerulean helped Rubik with the lightning rig for this model. Long ago we did a little exercise in placing a value on the model and it came to around 120,000.00 USD ... that is hwat it would have cost if all of the people that worked on it billed their time at average professional fees ... needless to say ... nothing was average about this model ;)

I hope every person that gets hold of this model will take the time to zoom in and spend a few hours on the towers and absorb the detail ... both day and night.  :thumbsup:

Yes, of course!
Anything that's been through the X Tool is CAMpatible.
And buildings of growth stages 1-8 are needed for CAM as well! ::)

All SFBT items that are in "SFBT" subfolders are not modded for the CAM, but as RippleJet said, they are of course compatible with it. Since the Plattenbau highrises are not really that tall, stage 8 is probably just fine for them.

Yeah , as soon as I get a chance!
On a side note , has anyone with this disc had problems with University of Clayhurst lots? There is no model files...and no documented dependencies.

All the model files are in a dependency file (BSC MEGA Props_JBSimio_Vol03 to be exact) which is on the disc... as are any other dependencies for the University of Clayhurst.  Since this was one of the last (if not the last!) things to be included on the DVD... and since I was literally in the middle of moving while the disc was being finalized... there was a bit of a time crunch and the readme is not as detailed as it normally would be.  If you install the entire dependency folder as recommended you shouldn't have any problems.  I will be starting a thread in the next couple days with more detailed information about the University pack... but I'm still in the process of gathering a few more things I need to properly finish the post.  If there are any questions in the meantime, feel free to PM me.  ;)

Hope that helps!

That helps ! Because I generally am up to date with dependencies , I did not feel it necessary to install the folder. I did glance through that folder , but hey , its all good!
Now my sims can get educated in style!!! Thanks JB!

Title: Format of DVD content
Post by: shahrinsam on December 17, 2008, 07:42:11 PM
hello...

I just would like to ask if the contents of the DVD will be suitable for Mac or not. I have been trying to download some of the important and interesting files(namely the BSC Texture pack, Jeronij mega prop pack, etc.) but they are only available in .exe type file. don't u have in .dat or sthg.

n dude...i do really want that KLCC (Petronas Twin Towers). Being a Malaysian, I know u really did it really really well..veryyyy impressive....
just got to work on the park below the tower on our own though.

thanks,

From what I understand, everything on the DVD is a raw .dat file, so yes, it will work on a Mac.  In the meantime, FileJuicer (http://www.filejuicer.com) should extract the dat files from the exe installers that are commonly found on the exchange.

While there are some files in installer format - notable the terrain mods and NAM - the vast majority are in folders and will just copy to your machine. Cal can tell you more as he uses a Mac.

Indeed...Everything will work on Mac and both the NAM and terrain mods comes as both an Installer and Mac-compatible package too.

The list above has the names of all the lots that are DVD exclusive at the moment. Some will be released to the LEX eventually but Petrona's will remain a DVD exclusive.

Hey Barby got the DVD a bit ago.   LOVE IT.   The above list I was wondering about dependencies.    If I DL'd the "dependencies" from the DVD should I still get brown boxes?    Specifically from CSX WFK - District Police.   At least that is the one that stands out.       I can't think of any dependencies I couldn't possibly have already.   lol      Also when I click on "External Dependencies" from the DVD menu, nothing seems to happen.     Thanks again, well worth the contribution.

The complete dependency list for CSX WFK - District Police is:
CSX MEGA Props Vol03
CSX MEGA Props Vol04
CSX MEGA Props Vol07
CSX MEGA Props Vol09 - this has the model for the building and is exclusive to the DVD at the moment
BSC MEGA Props Gascooker Vol01
BSC Textures Vol01

If you can give specific problems I will try to sort them out for you.

  Well Miss Barby,
   It seems to have cleared itself up.    I rearranged my plugins and re-Datapacked everything, and viola all seems fine now.   Thanks for the offer of assistance though.   The only question I have now is ...    If I click on "External Dependencies", is something supposed to happen?

Hello folks!

Just received the LEX DVD...  :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
IT'S SIMPLY GREAT! I'm seriously considering another 50 bucks donation! Greath work!

Now I have to install all the plug-ins...
Can I simply click the magic "install all" button, or will I have to check for each plug-in? The NAM had an installer, am I right?

Click the Install All button for everything except the specialised stuff like NAM and the Terrain Mods. These need separate installation as they have options you need to select.

Can someone confirm this was received and let me know when I could expect the DVD!

I am so excited to receive it!

We are working on plans to bring back and update the LEX DVD or comparable online version, along with other projects to simplify and make more easily available all the years of content that have been uploaded over the years. At this time, unfortunately it's not available. Re-establishing a worldwide DVD-printing, postal, and payment systems takes a significant amount of time and effort for a volunteer staff and of course the process and content would need to adhere to the high standards we try to keep. Your best option at the moment might be Casper's bulk LEX downloader app (paid version) but we are definitely hoping to re-start our old system, ideally before or during next year's decennial celebrations. Your interest is much appreciated :)

Seems it's been 7 years, so how about a DVD? I need/want a set. save a lot of time/work dnloading.
The site is like a check out line in the US, with many many many, items to catch your eye and money pouch while waiting for the 8 or 10 before you to check out and pay up.

According to current plans there will not be any DVD release, but the contents which were mostly only available on these discs will be uploaded to LEX.
Most of the dependency packs got updated/reuploaded in simple ZIP formats without the exe installers and most of the contents on LEX will get similar treatment, also some long standing issues will be fixed.
Currently there are 2-3 BSC Superior Packs with sets of buildings and the dependency tracker might allow us to create more "dedicated" sets, but some technical details needs to be figured out.

Title: Re: SC4D DVD
Post by: Tarkus on April 29, 2022, 03:12:14 AM
Just to follow up with what Tyberius06 said, the LEX DVD was originally a gift given to those who donated a set amount to the site's operating fund, modeled after Simtropolis' various STEX Collection discs from over the years.  When I assumed ownership of the site in mid-2019 (about three years after my last post here), I decided to assume all the operating costs myself, stopped accepting donations, and wound down the existing subscriber system.

Legally speaking, the donation angle is the only way in which a site can justify offering a disc of SC4 plugins in exchange for currency, without running afoul of the EA Tools End User License Agreement (EULA), which effectively prohibits the commercial sale of SC4 plugins.  In short, we can't actually offer the disc anymore.

Between bringing the DVD's "exclusives" over to the LEX, making them freely available to everyone (a plan that's been afoot for awhile now), coupled with the refinements Tyberius06 mentioned (and some other planned refinements), I do believe we'll be able to get close to the same experience for everyone.
