Title: River's End - and other rural areas (Update 3 - November 27th, 2007)
Post by: keyboardconfessional on November 11, 2007, 11:17:35 AM
Hi everyone...it's been a long time since I've done one of these, so please bear with me.  :) I have to go to work at 3:00, so I don't have much time, so I'm just posting one picture as a starter today. It's just a sample of the kind of areas I'll be showing in here. There will be a storyline coming up soon as well, so stay tuned for that, and have a great day!  ;D

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg233.imageshack.us%2Fimg233%2F7636%2Friversendfeb19061194818gc2.jpg&hash=a348a1a45a36ae34ad0ac6bdf6bedd505b01c5a7)

Harvest time in River's End is always the busiest time of year. The trucks pull in and out, the merchants stock all the fresh produce and the few residents of the north end reap the benefits. Goods are sometimes hard to come by on the other side of the river, but not during harvest time.

sincitybaby: I'm really lazy too...it took a lot of work to get all the dependencies in order. It's so worth it, though...those BSC farms are amazing. Thanks for the comment.

bat: Thank you! There's more to come where that came from. I'm just getting started.

jayo: I can't say realism is one of my strengths. :D I'm really more an eye-candy kind of person, and I'm not even too good at that! Thanks for the comment.

sebes: Thanks! I'm using IrfanView for some elementary effects, I hope everyone enjoys them. Thanks a lot for commenting.

Alright, so it's update time! I decided to jump right into the story arc I'm doing, so I hope you guys enjoy reading it. I look forward to your comments and constructive criticism, have a great night!

My name is Brian Dell'Erede, and I live on this island. Dickens' Cove, Faulkner County, population 142.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg218.imageshack.us%2Fimg218%2F6754%2Fupdate1islandoverviewfc9.jpg&hash=cfe8d8a910c3b24641609ed77f761b003ee27279)

My family and I live in this brick home just off the main drag of Dickens' Cove, if you could even call it that. The main drag...when you've only got three streets in your entire town, there really isn't much choice.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg215.imageshack.us%2Fimg215%2F3237%2Fupdate1brianshouseet6.jpg&hash=092bf913e22c9c4b46ff2eb36082d622769bc45c)

This is where I spend most of my time: Christopher's Coffee House, a local landmark since 1956. You can grab a quiet corner table, sip a latté and plot your escape. Chat with Rachel, the long time manager, and hear her take on the outside world. Or just mingle with your friends, because there's always somebody you know at Christopher's.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg215.imageshack.us%2Fimg215%2F1919%2Fupdate1christopherscoffdj9.jpg&hash=276b69bec2386b2738cc912d633502e94076e70a)

For all of the seventeen years I've been around, I can always remember wanting to get out of Dickens' Cove, where the sea seems to be always holding you back. The shorebound train comes once a week, and with every week that goes by, I become a little more convinced I'm going to catch it one day.

Hey guys! RL is totally hardcore lately what with midterms fast approaching and such, going along with work and keeping the social life and a relationship alive and well...so there's almost no time for SC4. Keeping that in mind, I do have some time for...

Replies:

TheTeaCat: Thanks! I think everybody should have a little island of their own. Just to escape, you know? And concerning tea...I work in a coffeeshop, so someday I may become a tea expert like yourself =) My favourite is golden chai. I can't wait to see your next comment.

patfirefghtr: Thank you for the comment. I've done a few CJ's over at ST, so I just have to remember how I did it before and then I'll be golden! Can't wait to see you back here!

threestooges: The pics will probably just be secondary to the story here, so I'm glad you like it! Have a great night.

bat: Thanks for the comment! When the next update comes (eventually) I hope you enjoy it as much as the last one.

Schulmanator: Thank you. Anytime I get the applause emoticon, I'm a happy guy. =P Looking forward to your next comment.

For those who are interested, the next update will probably come along sometime this weekend. I just have to finish up Hemingway with some farms and touchup work, and we'll spend a few updates there. After that...well, I'm not sure. Have a great night and you stay classy, SC4D!

patfirefghtr: I love to get people's attention. Someday I'll be a celebrity, you'll see  $%Grinno$% Can't wait to see your next post.  :)

So now...update time!

"Kelly, we agreed that if you came with me, you'd have to speak as little as possible."

     "Sorry, Brian."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg136.imageshack.us%2Fimg136%2F6863%2Fupdate2trainstationagaiau1.jpg&hash=58388eade5c1203105dd67d84f5ca7277a101ca4)

Kelly is my twelve year old sister. I suppose I should get you caught up on what's happening. Remember when I told you about how someday I'd get out of Dickens' Cove? Well, that was a month ago, and I'm out. I was halfway across the river when Kelly popped out of the cargo hold.

"Kelly, what the hell are you doing here?"

"You're not going to tell Mom and Dad, are you?"

"I think it's a little late for that now, seeing as how we're already a good 20 minutes out of town...well, there's nothing I can do. Grab a seat."

It's been a while since then, and we've been bouncing around the county looking for somewhere to settle for a bit. We finally arrived in Hemingway yesterday, a nice little centre of about 4500 people. Kelly and I were just getting off the train when the aforementioned exchange took place.

We have no methods of transportation other than our feet, and I need to head to the bank, so we get a move on.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg214.imageshack.us%2Fimg214%2F8831%2Fupdate2remindsmeofhomepz3.jpg&hash=179d81f12170617c21a5d0d440f1833e62a66b00)

You know, if I didn't know better, I'd swear I was at home. It's got kind of the same feel. Except at home, it's colder."

"Yeah, and it's a million times cooler here! There's more shopping, and more people, and bigger houses..." I shot Kelly a look and she quickly clammed up. "Sorry, Brian."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg102.imageshack.us%2Fimg102%2F6085%2Fupdate2hemingwaybanktz9.jpg&hash=0a705b0d2b31dfbfd452e219a0f2bb21cf47d72c)

The bank was a grand old structure built in the classical style almost 100 years ago. When they first built the town, they thought Main Street would be closer to the shore, so they built the bank accordingly. When they moved it further inland, however, the bank remained, and it has to this day. Faulkner Credit Union is a regional institution and Hemingway is one of its centres.

I've been saving up the meagre sum I receive from my parents each month for almost a year now and I still have enough for the both of us to live off of for a while. I pull about $300 out of my account and head out of the bank. Kelly and I are backtracking now, heading back to downtown and looking for a small flat to crash in for a while so we can figure out our next moves. Luckily, we found just the thing.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg210.imageshack.us%2Fimg210%2F5223%2Fupdate2thenewflathu1.jpg&hash=4dac8dd4827004621e42dd8514a990a1848c607c)

$150 in rent a month, and there's a gift shop downstairs I can work in while Kelly goes to school across the river in Hemingway Centre. Not too shabby. After all this movin' and shakin', however, I'm ready to hit the hay. It's just my luck that the flat already has two beds set up. I climb under the sheets and I'm sound asleep in a matter of minutes. It's been a trying couple of weeks.

Well, I desperately need to sleep now. (gotta be up early in the morning, opening up the coffeehouse tomorrow!) Have a great night/early morning, and if you've got any questions, comments, or concerns, please let me know.  ;D

P.S. For those farm lovers...a treat for you is coming up.  ;)

Glad you're enjoying the story, because I know some people don't like it when there's almost as much text as pictures.  :D And Christopher's has actually been there for 51 years, but they've had competition from outside sources. Tim Horton's even tried to move in once, but their mochas were cheap and gross, so everybody abandoned them. Have a good one and thanks again!

Kelvin (Sober): Thanks. Cycledogg's conifers = love, hehe. And if you think those rural areas are great, just wait until we get some actual farms kicking... And as for the outside world...well, that just happens to be where our last update took place! He caught the train!   ;D Have a great one, and I'm looking forward to your next comment.

Hey guys...once again, quite late in the day for an update, but you git 'r done whenever you can, I suppose :P But to start...

Replies(well, reply):

Krio: Thanks! I wouldn't really call this an update, persay...more of an expansion pack. It's RH if the last update's SC4. :) Thanks again for the comment.

So yeah...like I said, more of a mini-update. Only 2 pictures. I did some experimenting with colour saturation and it turned out pretty well. Enjoy.  ;D

On my first day of work, I was dusting off some shelves at the back of the gift shop when I came across this really old black-and-white picture of what appeared to be Hemingway. Since I had just gotten into town, I hadn't had a chance to look around, and I hadn't really realized how nice the place was. It had a little bit of everything.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F8695%2Fupdate21oldhemingwaypiccg1.jpg&hash=5d23feeac992738309941a52e9e568d6def7aa10)

My boss, Antoine, quickly popped up beside me, making sure his newest employee was keeping busy. When he saw me looking at the picture, he just started to laugh.

"Deceptive, isn't it? Hemingway is a town that doesn't show you much at first glance, but once you dig a little deeper, has beauty in many places. Here, take a look at this one. My brother took it from his plane about a year ago." He handed me a picture out of his pocket.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg214.imageshack.us%2Fimg214%2F9384%2Fupdate21farmlandsns7.jpg&hash=6dead8135cde8cd15886528f1f0502a7a8b8c113)

"Wow...I've never seen anything like that in my life. I lived in Dickens' Cove beforehand, so I never saw any farms or anything."

          "Dickens' Cove...sorry, you lost me."

"Don't worry about it. It's a tiny island way to the northwest...the only people who really know about it are the people who live there." I managed a small chuckle.

"It sounds...tranquil." Antoine ran a tight ship, and I could tell our chat was coming to an end.

"I'd better go sweep." I grabbed the broom and went, leaving Antoine with the picture in his hand and a slight smile on his face.

See, nothing too big. Have a great night and stay classy, SC4D.  ::)

Excellent updates you have done recently. Nice little storyline to go with it too.

One thing I have notice is your extremely deep rivers. is there a special reason for this? Does it lead to a port perhaps? Anyhow nice rural shots and looks like a town i could live in.

Hello Keyboard ...

Short stories or comments make pictures come alive. You may want to have a look at SFBT Street Tree mod. It will place random trees along the rural roadways. Go to the SC4D LEX and search in the Mods-Transport section.  It is well worth it for those who like to make Sim Rural Countryside. Good Luck.

bat: Thanks, buddy...always appreciate your comments!

TheTeaCat: Thanks for the comment. Umm...the deep rivers just came with the map I downloaded (Kerrynton County by tijn21, it's on the STEX) and I'm not sure why they're so deep. The ocean is really far away on the map. But whatever. I can't wait for this tea, I hope you are making Earl Grey with lemon  ;D

Jim (jmyers2043): Hi, Jim...downloaded the SFBT tree mod and it looks so much better, especially because there's an option for pine trees  ()stsfd() Thank you for the comment and for the tip.

P.S. Your farms should be showing up soon...for some reason all I can grow is SimGoober stuff, rather than you and BarbyW's...do you know why this is?

Thanks for all the wonderful comments, guys, but this is a really, REALLY busy week for me and I don't have anything to show you just yet :( It's midterm time up here in Canada  &cry2 And, on top of that, I have a gig to play on Monday!           Once again, not much time at all today. So here's two quick shots. A little bit more story, too. enjoy!  ;D

Ernest Hemingway awoke in a small room on a tiny island in Albom Inlet, Faulkner at 9:04 a.m. He wasn't really sure what was going on, to be quite honest. Last time he had checked, the year was 1942. And yet, a calendar on the wall clearly stated it was November 27th, 2007. Something strange was going on.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg291.imageshack.us%2Fimg291%2F3849%2Fupdate25hemingwaywakesuxy2.jpg&hash=7ffe3a988071a29484a1e13ac3f335df0db71a61)

At the same time, Charlotte Bronte was rising from her bed in a farmhouse in Barrie Point.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg291.imageshack.us%2Fimg291%2F361%2Fupdate25brontewakesupsq5.jpg&hash=9112246e0ed17379bf8491e9ac459f225be5377e)

They were both wondering the exact same thing.

          "What happened to me?"

          Have a great day, SC4D.

Adept2Rock: That's what I was going for. Thanks for the comment. :)

Here's another little bit of stuff. Enjoy.

It's been about a month since we moved to Hemingway. My mom and dad tracked us down somehow (I think Antoine might've got ahold of them) and we're corresponding now. They're worried, of course, but what can they do? Anyways, last week, Antoine sent me on a day trip to a tiny island called Fitzgerald a bit south of Dickens Cove. A woman who lives there makes spectacular wicker baskets, and I had to go pick up an order. Why she just couldn't ship them is beyond me, but what's a guy to do?

Anyways, I took a four hour train to the western coast to get to Fitzgerald. However, there is no ferry to and fro. A local makes trips across the Fitzgerald Channel twice a week to the train station. It was not one of those days. I was stranded at the station for two more hours until a local fisherman sat down beside me on the platform.

"Looking to get to the island?"

          "Yeah. How'd you know?"

"The world-weary shadow upon your face was an instant clue. Are you ready now?"

I was in no position to refuse. "Sure, let's go."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg507.imageshack.us%2Fimg507%2F158%2Fupdate3fitzgeraldislandhd0.jpg&hash=89ea7f44fd3005349af1455ae0397c27d1cae474)

Something about the fisherman was very familiar to me. He had weathered, leathery skin, and his clothes were nothing much. Despite this, he had an air of culture about him, and seemed well-read while we talked. He never told me his name, and before I knew it, we had hit the shore. I headed to the Fitzgerald Town Hall where the woman sold her baskets. I picked up the order and left them in the fisherman's boat: he has assured me a ride back to the station.

He had told me to meet him at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Library right off of Scott Street (the downtown corridor) when I was done my business. The library was compact but just emitted an aura of knowledge. In a village named for the writer of The Great Gatsby, I expected no less.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg507.imageshack.us%2Fimg507%2F3081%2Fupdate3fscottfitzgeraldwz1.jpg&hash=614caed1d7d3f0473095daaa896e233b72d7eae8)

I saw him inside, sitting on a couch and clutching a copy of The Old Man and the Sea. A curious reading choice, but the Hemingway classic appealed to some, I supposed.

"Brian. I was wondering what your dinner plans were?"

It was 4:30 and I was starving. "Actually, I was going to eat on the ride home."

"Why don't you come to my home for some roast beef? I don't have anybody else to eat with, you might as well join me." How could I refuse? We walked for fifteen minutes before reaching the fisherman's house. It was a two story home built in the 1800's, full of charm and character. It was very sparsely furnished for such a large house.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg153.imageshack.us%2Fimg153%2F9487%2Fupdate3ernestshouself0.jpg&hash=b7f9af7281ee574c277b646831df4336b722d236)

The roast beef was amazing, and we sat and chatted over dinner. As my water was running low and we were about to call it quits, he made a very strange proposition.

"Brian, if it's not too much trouble...I was wondering if I could come back with you to Hemingway."

          "I'm sorry?"

"I'll take the train back, and then head downtown. Some friends of mine are staying at a place called the Sherway. I'll have excellent accomodations, and I'll be no trouble at all."

I really had nothing to say. "I have no problem with it, but let's be honest here. I don't even know your name."

"My name?" He paused for a moment, then extended his hand. "Brian, I'm Ernest Hemingway."

          Stay classy, SC4D.

Thought I'd return the favor.

This is already getting to be very interesting, much more interesting than mine i'm afraid....

What would it be like to meet Ernest Hemingway....

Amazing MD, Jaime. As an English major and soon to be English teacher, this alternate reality where the great writers of the 19th and 20th centuries all reside in obscurity is a fascinating story.

And for your development, you've got the pocket-sized villages down pat.

Who would I like to meet? As a Mississippian and a Modernist the answer is William Faulkner, hands down. Apparently he was quite a colorful character...

I'm looking forward to more.

Cheers,
Kevin

Well, gang, I've got an update done but I probably won't post it until Friday, unless I get really bored between now and then. I'm going to take a break from playing Faulkner to have some fun experimenting, but we'll figure it out. Have a great night and stay classy, SC4D.  ()stsfd()

Hi Jamie! I popped in right after you started your MD but haven't had time to return and catch up with the story.
I love your photos, and the story is fascinating. You have some really pretty houses in several of the pics and I wonder if you created them yourself.
Anyway, the island, the farms the rural areas -- they all look great.

Until next time...
Joan

This is my first time looking in and I have to tell you I love it.  You do a great job of selecting pictures.  I love the zoom shots especially.  And the story that goes a long is great also.  Keep up the great work you have something going on good here.
