Orleans County is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, bordered by Niagara, Monroe, and Genesee counties on the west, east, and south.  As of the 2000 census, Orleans County had a population of 44,171.  The county has five major population centers:  the villages of Albion, Holley, Kendall, Lyndonville, and Medina.

The banner doesn't lie - Orleans County is my home.  I reside in the Village of Lyndonville.  I am a Class of 2005 graduate of the Lyndonville Central School District.

I can't lie, it's a wonderful feeling to be creating and extrapolating on my home turf.  Before I get started, I'd like to thank Troy / blade2k5 for putting together this great canvas for me to work on.  I also look forward to doodling around on the canvasses of Buffalo and Rochester.

This Orleans County will differ from the real-world Orleans County in several ways:

1)  A major increase in population.
2)  More major highways / freeways / expressways.
3)  Orleans County is Sabre & Tiger Country.

WARNING - This Mayor's Diary will contain massive doses of roadgeekery, in the form of intricate transportation setups, signs, and signals.
You have been warned - now sit back and enjoy the ride!

Rory / canuck3360:  Yes, God help y'all.  Southern California AND Orange County, NY don't have anything on this "OC"!

Alex / Tarkus:  I'm glad to be back.  SimCity withdrawal was absolutely killing me.

Guillaume / Sciurus:  Welcome to Orleans County!  Enjoy your stay - and you will soon see the place I call "home".

The Lake Ontario State Parkway, in real life, is a approximately 36-mile divided highway along the southern shore of Lake Ontario.  It starts just north of State Route 18 in Carlton, and ends at its intersection with Lake Avenue in the City of Rochester.  The Parkway connects several state parks, including the Lakeside Beach State Park; the Oak Orchard Marine State Park; Hamlin Beach State Park; and Braddock Bay State Park.

The Parkway was originally intended to stretch all the way from Niagara Falls to Rochester; however, it was only built to Lakeside Beach State Park.

Here are some pictures of signage along the Parkway:  http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/ny/losp/

That's the real world.  Now, as you may have guessed, the Parkway figures an important role in my Orleans County.  It will stretch across the entire county, to Niagara Falls in the west, and Rochester / Nieuw Nederland in the east.

Parkway Control Cities (from west to east):

Lyndonville
Rochester | Nieuw Nederland

From east to west:

Lyndonville
Niagara Falls

Highway interchanges may (or may not) feature the following control cities:

Albion, Kendall, Holley, Batavia, Pembroke, Medina

Stay Tuned for Part 2 - In-Game With the Parkway!

Stay Tuned!

Hey Ryan - you started all over... Do I have to as well now???  :P

I am glad that the roadgeekery will continue...sitting back and enjoying the ride, and staying on board for update 2!

It's great to see the Ontariomeer Snelweg getting a makeover. Indeed, an important route from Rhenen to Niagara Vallen haha. On the other side of the border the routenumber is A96 so when getting close to the OC-NN border you know how to renumber the sign...

Pat:  We're eastbound & down, 18-wheeler rollin' - we're gonna do what they say can't be done . . . .

Sebes:  I'm sure many would be saddened if you did have to start over.  I'm very glad you don't have to.  I will definitely have signs posted regarding the route number change.

Matt / threestooges:  I'm glad to be back, Matt.  Thanks for reading, my friend.

Haljackey:  Wait no longer.  Geronimo - look out below!

metarvo:  You may think you're ready.  I don't know if you can handle this.  :P

deathtopumpkins:  Thank you!

Welcome back to Orleans County!  Last time, we took an initial look at the Lake Ontario State Parkway, which connects several state parks along the southern shore of Lake Ontario between Buffalo and Rochester.  I can tell you that construction has commenced in the northwest corner of the county, near Golden Hill State Park.  Most of the mainlanes of both the Parkway and State Highway 63 have been completed.

Two interchanges are also substantially completed:  the interchange between the Parkway and the western entrance to Golden Hill State Park, and the interchange between the Parkway and SH 63.

Pictures look eastbound, starting at the west and continuing east.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg11.imageshack.us%2Fimg11%2F6822%2Fgoldenhillstateparkwent.jpg&hash=da6f7d2560be8df5bb80d9345a675a6f2c106347)
The first exit in Orleans County.  Looking north (to the left) will be Golden Hill State Park.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg11.imageshack.us%2Fimg11%2F1163%2Fgoldenhilljan2001240704.png&hash=8dd4782854ee8a9ffa31ebea5216ba2a7e4b207f)
The Parkway's interchange with SH 63.  The interchange is substantially completed, save for the Parkway's mainlanes.  They will pass underneath the other two ramps.

That'll do it for this installment of Orleans County.  Thanks for reading, and see you next time!

Nice interchanges Ryan!

But how you gonna go about taking the State Parkway mainline under those ramps? Other than that little problem, that is one fantastic interchange!

Post by: metarvo on April 26, 2009, 05:00:51 AM
Those interchanges are sweet, Ryan!   Orleans County must be one of those places that is in a perpetual construction zone.  Of course, this is very true to RL, where I have seen some areas that always seem to have orange barrels everywhere.  Keep up the good work!

Awesome job Ryan!  I really like the Parclo B-4 interchange you made in the first photo.

Do I spot a smooth MIS curve in the lower right of the photo?  You... cheater!   :P

The three-way interchange is looking great too.

David / dedgren:  I'm no Mozart, but I do feel a connection.   :P  Thank you for reading!

PatSmokey & The Bandit is one of my favorite movies of all time.  I apologize for sticking that in your head, but it is catchy.

deathtopumpkins:  You'll see . . . . later.

metarvo:  I really should BAT some construction barriers and such.  Thanks for the idea!

Haljackey:  All's fair in fun and games.

darraghf:  Thank you!  No, I didn't make it myself.  It's coming very soon, though.

Alex / Tarkus:  That I am.  I'm just hoping the Sims get the hint that they can't turn left off those parclo ramps.  If not, I guess I'll just throw some signs on.  ;)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg4.imageshack.us%2Fimg4%2F7975%2Fupdate1c.png&hash=c462ac464e926f75f470ca4a6918473f5bbe0f9e)

When we last left off, I was almost finished constructing the Lake Ontario State Parkway's first two interchanges.  We're going to take a look at what NYSDOT has accomplished as far as getting signage up goes.  We'll start looking eastbound on the Parkway as it approaches its interchange with SH 63.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg4.imageshack.us%2Fimg4%2F61%2Fgoldenhilljan2001240803.png&hash=e9c026cd985fa4875548efd4459b639ca3ee1117)
All hazardous cargo moving eastbound must detour around the central Lyndonville population area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg4.imageshack.us%2Fimg4%2F715%2Fgoldenhilljan2001240803z.png&hash=d8c9a77fba2d76af3aab195b503259ecb9125e0b)
Approach sign to the interchange.  SH 63 will take you to the airport, tentatively named "Perreault International".

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg7.imageshack.us%2Fimg7%2F61%2Fgoldenhilljan2001240803.png&hash=56c1074593be76415e7d27dc57a41c59302d62a7)
Now at the Parkway / 63 interchange.  Sorry for the pause border - I still have yet to re-download that remover jiggamathinger.

Moving over to SH 63 . . .

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg4.imageshack.us%2Fimg4%2F425%2Fgoldenhilljan2001240803i.png&hash=1406416a43bfead9eb7a416313563595484b1573)
Keeping hazardous cargo away from the Lyndonville metro!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg11.imageshack.us%2Fimg11%2F61%2Fgoldenhilljan2001240803.png&hash=08e50a906a25042911586b9806585323d8ad7a39)
Approach to the split.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F2206%2Fgoldenhilljan2001240803h.png&hash=c4b825cedfee6cfc1dacce1b4dfa670d7bba4f15)
Welcome to Splitsville, population us.  Once again, apologies for the pause border.

That's it for now.  More signage coming soon!

You can also check out Orleans County over on Simtropolis, in the brand new CJ section!

Thanks for reading, and we'll see you next time!

I do so agree with what Alex write above here ( ^^^ there ^^^): the signage is class A.

Also looking at the roads and exits, yoy made them look very natural and real. I never played with RHW myself - but... seem I got to go for it now as well :)

Rory / canuck3360:  I thought you might recognize that.  ;)  If only I knew how to make a good airport . . . . but that will come later.

Alex / Tarkus:  Really, all the accolades go to Arthur (artforce1).  Arthur spearheaded the original Generic Highway Sign Development Project, and that's where all this really started.

Sebes:  Thank you, thank you.  Please don't think you have to bring Nieuw Nederland up to my standards.  We're playing by different rules - I'm sure there's things in our MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Control Traffic Devices) that aren't in your equivalent, and vice-versa.

Guillaume / Sciurus:  "Lyndonville" was originally called "Lyndon"; however, there was already an entity in New York named Lyndon.  Lyndonville was incorporated in 1903.  I believe "Orleans" had a French connection (but not like the one I discussed above with Rory).  I had started work on building a real city, with buildings and all . . . . .

That is, until my exhaust fan failed for the second time this year.

:'(  >:(  :bomb:  :angrymore:

Unfortunately, that means no Orleans County until I get it fixed.
I'm sorry this had to happen again, folks.  We were just getting started . . .

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg121.imageshack.us%2Fimg121%2F6580%2F12510marshalloverview.jpg&hash=449e7957253da171c2965e05c81527a200d62af8)

You may notice below that the Parkway's exits are numbered now.  I took a look at Google Maps and here's where I mapped out the exits, from west to east:

Exit 1:  Robert Moses State Parkway / NY 18
Exit 2:  Ransomville Road
Exit 3:  NY 425 / Wilson
Exit 4:  NY 78 (Transit Road) / Olcott Beach & Lockport
Exit 5:  NY 148 / Barker
Exit 6:  NY 269 / County Line Road
Exit 7:  Murdock Road, Lake Shore Road
Exit 8:  SH 63 / Medina & Pembroke
Exit 9:  Marshall Road, Lake Shore Road
...and on from there.

Of course, what would Orleans County be without signs?

Really nice signs and interchanges (I assume this MD is all about interchanges), but the second one you posted, Marshall Road--wouldn't the secondary road be raised over the interstate, not vice-versa? That looks awfully expensive to build that way.

Shame on you, using new RHW pieces in your MD before they're out...   :P

Ah well, that's a nice application of them!  Great interchanges and signs!

Ryan, it's fantastic to see "The OC" back in action here.  Looks like you're having fun with Maarten's new splitters there, and that signage is just absolutely crisp-looking.

Welcome back!

Hmmm... judging by the highway signs you're using, I assume you are from upstate New York, no? Did my fair share of driving up there (I'm from the Jersey Shore  ;))

Your interchanges with the RHW are excellent; I never did get the hand of using them yet. It'll be interesting to see development surrounding these highways soon!

Nice to see a revival here, Ryan. I've always been a fan of OC, but never was around to comment before.

I'm glad to see that OC is up and running again, Ryan.  ;D  I can't wait to see what kind of new RHW tools you use, and I've already seen some in this update.  Is that an RHW-8 neighbor connection?

Robin (rooker1)
:  Thank you, my friend!  I apologize for making a MD mod's nightmare, what with drifting in and out and all.  I hope this will be the end of the troubles.

gottago:  Expensive?  Hah . . . not when you have a certain DLL file in your Plugins folder.  ;)  I was really just looking to try out another version of a high-capacity half cloverleaf interchange.

Haljackey:  Someone's got to, right?  :P  Thanks for stopping by!

Alex (Tarkus):  Thanks!  It's good to be back, and there's always more where that came from.

dsrwhat316:  Yup, that's exactly right.  Upstate NY between Buffalo & Rochester is my home roost - and, ironically, the location of this MD.  $%#Ninj2

Ethan (ecoba):  Welcome to Orleans County!  I'm glad you like what you see - hopefully future updates keep you coming back!

Corey (Nexis4Jersey):  Thanks!

metarvo:  That RHW-8 connection isn't functional . . . yet.

Update | Saturday, February 6, 2010

I've been trying to become a better SimCity player.  I've come to realize that there's more to making a great city, region, or MD than just highways, interchanges, signs, and grids.  So, here's what I've been trying out the past week:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg213.imageshack.us%2Fimg213%2F6861%2F2510overview.jpg&hash=2091b92272e78a686c5ad3e52e4d328fcca4e53b)
An overview of the Golden Hill area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F2036%2Fmedianaesthetics.jpg&hash=4a431c381132e8d5ff3364e847fea5415629466e)
This is what I've been playing around with - new median aesthetics, complete with gravel U-turn area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg42.imageshack.us%2Fimg42%2F3775%2Fexit7wbaesthetics.jpg&hash=5e0fa9e43d154393ac6503be17eac0c7e2254336)
Same as above, just on the north side of the Exit 7 westbound lanes.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F2379%2Fdualhikebiketrails.jpg&hash=e17eacaca32e19f352ec3074ec3f2b2e3d97a574)
And last but not least - dual hike & bike trails on either side of the "main drag", Lake Shore Road.

I hope this update finds everyone in good health and spirits, and best wishes to those on the Atlantic Seaboard, who are weathering a very nsaty winter storm right now.

Looking good Ryan. The medians are nice and the gravel U-turn area is a nice touch. Perhaps round off the edges of it a bit more (grass would likely grow in on the sides except where cars turn if that makes any sense), but aside from that, great detail, it's one of those things you don't think of until you see it once, then you realize all the other times you've seen them in real life. With such a well manicured median it looks like the area is set to become one of those rapidly expanding suburb areas. Nice work.

Nice little update there, your work with the RHW is stunning. When will we actually see some development shots? :)
Title: Re: Orleans County
Post by: ecoba on February 06, 2010, 08:56:54 AM
Nice update, Ryan.

I think that your new usage of the RRP flora is really amazing, and that median turnaround is really realistic. Around here, they put them on curves, and cops hide where you can't see them.

Anyway, the bike and hike trails are also a really nice touch, are there any wooded areas in the area, it would be nice to run a trail through there.

Matt / threestooges:  Thank you for the kind words, Matt - and for all your support and input that you've given me so far.

Ethan / ecoba:  That's exactly what cops use them for here - in fact, that's how I got my first (and only) speeding ticket.

. . . on which road? . . . None other but the Lake Ontario State Parkway . . .

Thank you for the comments you've left - this is my first time really working with Mayor Mode ploppables, and I'm glad it's coming out this way.

nedalezz:  Thank you!  Funny you should ask, because the time is now!

. . . after you answer this question, of course . . .

NYSDOT is ready to start hanging BGSes (Big Green Signs) on the major roads.  I have decided to leave it up to you, the readers of Orleans County, to choose which font I should use on the signs.

You have two options:  1)  "Highway Gothic"; or 2) "Clearview".

"Highway Gothic" is on the left below; "Clearview" on the right.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sabre-roads.org.uk%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10050%2Fi-35-okla-exit-126-exit-gantry-suggested-alternate-reduced-80pc.png&hash=10626b70addf5d65048d2fb6a8596d08a4989ac7)                                   (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sabre-roads.org.uk%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10050%2Fi-35-okla-exit-126-exit-gantry-suggested-alternate-clearview-improved.png&hash=4d3cc84c7ed55a59670a8860d91444ac1ccc07a9)

These images are taken from JN Winkler's sign illustrations in this thread:  http://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=575.450
All credit for images belong to him.

Another option is using one font's letters, and another's numbers (example:  Clearview letters with Highway Gothic numbers).

I'll give y'all until Saturday, February 20 to weigh in.  I'm really looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Development Update Coming Later Tonight!

Geeze I've missed quite the bit. Your signs look plainly awesome btw

As for the font, I'd go with ClearView.

Being a roadgeek, you should know what I'd choose... ;) Highway Gothic, of course. And probably a Series E(M) variant of that.

Nice last update too, btw. I like the median turnaround... a very nice touch.

Clearview still looks kinda weird to me, so I'd go for good ol' Highway Gothic.  Great stuff here as usual--I'm glad to see you're having fun with the TuLEPs!

the text on the left looks good, but from a point of view of just being simple to read, I'll vote for the one on the right (Clearview).

Good to see some work from you here, Ryan. As for the fonts, I must go with the Clearview. Sad to see there won't be any old button-copy signs, I love old patched signs.

Just an update . . . . going to be taking votes for approximately 48 more hours!

FHWA Highway Gothic:  3                                          (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sabre-roads.org.uk%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10050%2Fi-35-okla-exit-126-exit-gantry-suggested-alternate-reduced-80pc.png&hash=10626b70addf5d65048d2fb6a8596d08a4989ac7)

Clearview:  4                                          (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sabre-roads.org.uk%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10050%2Fi-35-okla-exit-126-exit-gantry-suggested-alternate-clearview-improved.png&hash=4d3cc84c7ed55a59670a8860d91444ac1ccc07a9)

Rock The Vote, y'all!

IMHO, Highway Gothic is the "true" sign font, so it will be the one that I choose.  Clearview doesn't look bad, but I'm used to seeing Highway Gothic.
