-edit- Finished fixing submission. I just wanted to avoid double posting if at all possible.

So this doesn't go on all day...

...and at major risk to my reputation for thin-lipped rectitude...

...I'll drop a, er... big hint.

Picture yourself as an 18th century explorer of the American west, in the wilderness for months at a time with your small party of other brave men, and you are approaching some mountains near modern day Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  What appears before you is this...

Grand Teton Mountain, Grand Teton NP, Wyoming

...but what you see instead-

Well, you have been on the trail for a long time.

Back to 3RR a bit later.  Big 'grats, bat, on the "double-0."  Something to celebrate!

Well if there are only two wrong, (and though that would be a good place for one of those, you would need a vivid imagination to think of it) it must just be a matter of swtiching the two (letters in bold are the altered submissions). Fun contest by the way.

Frost Mtn      Jack ____, Anchorage radio personality
Mt. Ida         I would have, too
Curry Mtn.        Dr. Frank'nfurter
Whitehouse Pk   nice downtown address
Broken Mtn         It's not just my back
Scots Pk          Mary, Queen of ___
Mt. Morven      Ossian's land
Sparrow Pk      Capitan Jack ___
Black Cone      Dropped my ice cream on the asphalt
Crazy Mtn      ____ for you
The Spur      Equine Incentive
Bigwig Mtn      Beech Hanger inhabitant
Whiskey Pk      neat
Thundercloud Mtn   Chief ________
Ford Pk      Arthur's friend
Grace Mtn      MIL's Last name
Ransom Pk      King's ____
Churchlady Mtn   "How con-veeeeeeee-ni-ent!" (Saturday Night Live)
Riggs Mtn      Sargeant Martin
Granite Pk      Mountain stuff
Mt Merryweather   Not Clark's companion (Meriwether Lewis)
Tower Pk      good place to put one
Hoblit Pk      Directed by...
Mt. Louis      My lawyer friend-he was no saint (St. Louis)
Moose Tooth Mtn   Anchorage pizza place
Wickham Mtn      Hampshire town
Owen's Mtn      An Aussie luby
Mt Palos      ____ Park, Illinois
Deux Tetons      My what a vivid imagination you (and those 18th century folks) have
Mt Zelo      Lower Po Valley wide place in the road (how on earth did you come across that one?)
Sunday Mtn      A place to rest (on the day of rest)
Reagan Mtn      Tear down this wall
Oakwood Mtn      street in Downer's Grove you grew up on

EDIT:  WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

I'll be thinking up a suitable prize, Matt...

...a $50.00 off coupon to Madame Froo-Froo's corsetwear shoppe, perhaps?

...and post that and on other things later.  Thanks to everyone for playing.

We last had the chance to honor our friend bat a bit ago when he made his 1,987th post here [linkie].  Then, just a day or so ago, he happened to make comment #1,600 on 3RR.  We were suitably impressed, so began looking for a fitting way to once again honor our flitty friend.  We'll do that the long way around by showing you some info about

Three Rivers Region's City of Grand Valley is a twin-city of bat's hometown of Bielefeld, Germany.  Bielefeld [linkie] is a large city of about 326,000 inhabitants (2006) located in the German Federal State of North Rhein-Westphalia.  While the larger area surrounding Bielefeld is one of the most heavily industrialized in Europe, the city itself is located in a low pass in hills between the two sections of the Teutoburger Wald (forest) and is physically a very attractive place.  Here is a location map from Google.

Grand Valley, while just a fraction of the size population-wise of Bielefeld, is quite a nice place in its own right.  Here's its 3RR Gazetteer entry, which also explains the connection between the two places.

  • Grand Valley (City - NW Quad Evendim Twp - lat. 48° 43' 49" N / lon. 95° 00' 55" W - elev. 843 ft/260 m amsl.)  Grand Valley is a charter city located adjacent to the City of Pineshore on the north.  It lies mainly in the "V" shaped area between the Grand and Cold Rivers north of their confluence.  The corporate limits also include Forked Tree Island in the Grand River and land east of that river up to the corporate limits of the City of Stewart  It derives its name from the valley of the Grand River between Grand Lake eight miles to the north and the River's mouth five miles to the south.  Population (2000 census): 13,833.  Local Government:  Mayor, 9 member City Council.  Police and Fire:  City Police Department, 23 officers, City Fire Department.  Medical Services:  Two for-profit hospitals:  Grand Valley General and HealthCo Wellness, four medical/emergency care clinics.  Postal Service:  3RRPS Nos. 17, 18 and 37.  Air Service:  General aviation, runway length 5,600 ft/1,700 m and 3,900 ft/1,200 m paved, tower staffed 24/7, passenger terminal.  Rail Service:  Passenger, freight.  History and General Information:  Grand Valley was settled commencing in the late 1840s when emigrants from the area around Bielefeld, Germany located here along the edge of Townsite Bay.  The area was originally called, as a result, Germantown.  The new settlement grew quickly, as one of the first things constructed was an aqueduct (later changed to an underground pipeline) that drew water from several miles up the Cold River and provided sufficient head to power large mills constructed at the south end of the bay.  These mills and the company formed to operate them were called Bielefeld Mills, and they processed the abundant flax grown in the area into linen cloth that served the needs of the region, northern Minnesota and the Dakotas, and south-central Canada for the next 80 or so years.  A two mile/three km rail spur to serve the city, which was incorporated in 1868, was built from the DW&W RR line just east of the Cold River bridge in 1874.  The mills closed in the depression years of the 1930s and stood abandoned for the next 50 years.  In the 1980s, an extremely successful effort was launched to turn the giant structures into small business "incubators" by rehabbing them completely from top to bottom and offering space inside them out at very attractive rates.  As a result, Grand Valley is home to a large percentage of the region's high-tech and computer companies today, and the area is justly known locally as 3RR's "Silicon Valley."  Other influences of Grand Valley's first residents are seen in the beautiful original city hall (the city government now operates from the new (1996) government center complex) and the Old Water Tower, which both show a strong German character in their design.

Here's a few snapshots of the things just described.

#1 - Old City Hall

#2 - Bielefeld Mills

#3 - Old Water Tower

#4 - Downtown housing conversions along Townsite Bay

#5 - Sloughs along Grand River

#6 - Grand River Historical Society Museum

#7 - Overlook on Cold River at the Government Center Complex

I guess we should close by noting that, according to some, just like 3RR Bielefeld doesn't actually exist [linkie].  Only our mysterious friend bat knows whether that's true, I guess, but maybe he's just part of the conspiracy too, eh?

* * *

We still have Matt (threestooges) yet to honor, I need to say a word or two about passing 30,000 (yes, that's correct- thirty thousand) page views, and I need to respond to several of the great comments and requests left here recently, so I'll try to get back here fairly soon.

Later.

Matt (threestooges) has been a 3RR Regular* going way back to the early 3RR-ST days.  He's gone, during that time, from asking about law schools to entering one, and his thoughtful comments, often catching some point or detail we missed, are always appreciated.

He's recently gotten our scrambled placename list [linkie] completely right, which was no small feat, given the obscure nature of many of the clues.  That certainly warrants some recognition, and we'll thus add some additional information that's recently come to light about 3RR's very own

Larry, Moe and Curly Johannsen were a familiar sight around the southeastern town of Black Earth at the turn of the 20th Century.  Close to the point of rarely ever being seen separate from one another, they attracted the attention of an early local photography enthusiast, who shot a number of pictures of their everyday activities over the years.  It's reported that a set of these pictures made their way to Hollywood following the the death of the last surviving brother and served as the inspiration for the movies and later on the television shows that celebrated their exploits.

The Johannsens, once their parents and other family moved from the region (reportedly in the middle of the night without warning to the three boys, who had only a day or two before somehow herded a number of sheep in their care into the midst of the funeral of a local notable), found themselves family farmers on a hardscrabble plot just outside of the town limits.

Despite this state of affairs, the boys lived fairly comfortably, as it was reported that savvy locals and businesses would pay them not to do work for them, as invariably things would turn out poorly.  Thus, Larry, Moe and Curly were spotted from time to time all dressed up at one of Pineshore's trendy local establishments looking in vain for any young women willing to give them the time of day.

We see them here loading up the family vehicle...

...and here they are shopping.

The Johannsens, patriotic to a fault, participated in the Regional Guard...

...and surprisingly were able to master the use of modern military equipment.

They drank together at local watering holes,

recreated together at local sporting grounds,

and generally, just like you and me, tried to keep their heads on straight.

They even did a little time together in connection with that unfortunate...

...well, let's just leave it at that...

So, there you have it.  Three brothers, best of friends...

...3RR's own beloved "Three Stooges."

Later, my friends.

David
