Title: Building a Harbour...Fine tunings.
Post by: jeronij on November 07, 2006, 03:30:56 PM
This is a heavily illustrated tutorial, so it can take a while to load . ( all pics hosted off site thanks to imageshak)

CREATE A IRREGULAR SEAPORT

PART 1 - STANDARD TERRAFORMING

Remember: Shift+1 to 9 for different tool brush sizes. Shift+F1 to F8 for different brush strenght. (1-F1 = less effect)
If you are not familiarized with terraforming, dont get frustrated. To follow this tutorial you will need some previous knowledgement and practice about the tools and thecniques used in it. So dont worry and take it easy. Practice and patience is all what you need   .

1 Choose a nice city tile with a part in the water.First thing to do is create a leveled sea bottom. We´ll use the God mode levelling tool for this.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg218.imageshack.us%2Fimg218%2F6308%2Fjrjtutpuertos011ni.jpg&hash=ddef44e7818a27e1861f685190b8e52522deac23)

2  First choose a determinate deepth and start slowly and carefully to level the shoreline on the water side.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F3097%2Fjrjtutpuertos020ut.jpg&hash=61f5aaf908b7e9d804d0712a7c61c67877cab2aa)

3  Using the same tool extend the sea bottom to the whole area where you plan to make your harbour.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F4251%2Fjrjtutpuertos039qn.jpg&hash=1b11ae511f08ad7743734d8f17f5f9bea76b2e81)

4  Something like this.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F3968%2Fjrjtutpuertos043be.jpg&hash=ecd552a4a39e316d1109317a616396430413a21d)

5  Now you can use the smoothing tool in the border area of the new seabottom.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F9233%2Fjrjtutpuertos054xl.jpg&hash=f2f90dbec8400a19709cdb32df49e072905f8ab4)

6 And give the area a more natural way.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F3286%2Fjrjtutpuertos061it.jpg&hash=0637743d58069d6f0386b640a97b4181a4846958)

7  Once the basis is done, it is time to create the land where the harbour will be build. Change to levelling tool and start on a land area with the desired height, and extend the land into the sea. Give it a general shape that fits with your projected harbour.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F9718%2Fjrjtutpuertos077td.jpg&hash=b92d8f43b3ae6968ccd96615c05358e9765dafa6)

8  Now you can use the single road tile technique to draw the contour of your harbour. Keep in mind the seawalls that you will use when placing the road tiles, and be sure to leave enough space to place the lots correctly. The single road tile is useful for this, but it wont make all the work for you.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F4896%2Fjrjtutpuertos083km.jpg&hash=0b43333313640bd6913759182c8b27d9742bc0f1)

9  It is time to go to the Mayor mode menu and choose the levelling tool available there. It is much better for the work that comes now.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F9675%2Fjrjtutpuertos091rx.jpg&hash=ef9f5c185a97923df736a8ddcd4b0b9c64896d06)

10 You have to slowly and carefully level the seabottom to fit with the deisired shape. It requires some practice and try and fail, but it can be done . In this pic you can see one of the common problems you can find while terraforming (in water and in land too). The stairs instead a nice diagonal line. Well, lets see how to solve this...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F9995%2Fjrjtutpuertos107rh.jpg&hash=964f0d5e73b68f0d97be0ab4baa49e0c29b31663)

11  We need more height between the top (land) and the bottom (sea). The easiest way to do this is starting from a deeper water area. Use the levelling tool to make the area under the stair more deep until the stair becomes a nice diagonal line. This technique alse requires practice and patience . Once done, you can re-level the sea bottom, just leaving the deeper line in front of the diagonal line.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F2444%2Fjrjtutpuertos117tj.jpg&hash=750cd2c86b12b5fd4f2df536be4365fbaa443bce)

12  After some fine tunign, you will get something like this. Now you can use you favourite coastal stuff to make your projected harbour.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F8959%2Fjrjtutpuertos120uc.jpg&hash=75378a42f4e2a8554e01248977645b470b1eb174)

PART 2 - ACCURATE TERRAFORMING

13 Now you will say, and what if I want to use a in game seaport or PEG´s CDK (and similars)?¿, Well, it isk known that ploping a seaport will level the shoreline to the lowest possible height. We´ll use one as a leveller.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F2479%2Fjrjtutpuertos138yy.jpg&hash=3d54b88cb889cc1edb56652ee08ca986978ff30a)

14 Once ploped, bulldoze it .

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg204.imageshack.us%2Fimg204%2F5685%2Fjrjtutpuertos140jm.jpg&hash=7312bbc6d961102a6a53a3507db34653fd76723b)

15 And you´ll get the desired level .

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg204.imageshack.us%2Fimg204%2F9959%2Fjrjtutpuertos157nl.jpg&hash=736607e3a1c687c2abb0f238c1983a7747ed8bd9)

16 Now just follow the explained techniques to flatten all the harbour area. Follow the same shape you originally used.
The red arrow show how to translate the desired level from one side to the other side of the harbour.
The blue arrow shows how to use the levelling tool to extend the level between the road tiles. Dont worry if the road tiles are destroyed when doing this. They can be easily place again.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg204.imageshack.us%2Fimg204%2F4395%2Fjrjtutpuertos167cg.jpg&hash=ae6635d7e6515a9cc2bbef66e10692ff14f9817e)

17 This is the before pic...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg204.imageshack.us%2Fimg204%2F8749%2Fjrjtutpuertos173rc.jpg&hash=fa5f1f77dfc99be9c422bacd1f5a25465b3c7370)

18 And this is the after one.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg203.imageshack.us%2Fimg203%2F8273%2Fjrjtutpuertos182dc.jpg&hash=bc291327e3d861b2fb25eeea255e84fa8f2bda28)

19 Now it is time to see if the projected seawalls will fit in the shoreline. Mmm, it seems that they do not fit

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg203.imageshack.us%2Fimg203%2F3198%2Fjrjtutpuertos199ig.jpg&hash=f2a59b26a1b7e865e62e5d746d94be08eb800929)

20 But we have learned how to solve this problem. See steps 10 and 11 to refresh your memory  !!!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg203.imageshack.us%2Fimg203%2F3630%2Fjrjtutpuertos205mz.jpg&hash=37ec5abcd66aea68ac55749249489c46468f7a31)

21  The read area shows the finished area. The yellow shows the unfinished. (obviusly  )

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg203.imageshack.us%2Fimg203%2F5114%2Fjrjtutpuertos211wf.jpg&hash=1998f0496cbd6ef25a5965cca025aa017b2de344)

22 At this point, you should be able to place your desired lots without probems .

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg203.imageshack.us%2Fimg203%2F9738%2Fjrjtutpuertos221rr.jpg&hash=6eee8b904b02ed274535e60edd67ddb8a8ed7b59)

I suggest you to read also Wouanagaine's tutorial Harbour. make it easy (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=14.0) about regional harbour making  !!!

Great tutorial. Interesting use of lots to create the final terraformed level. I must try this. In the past I have plopped one lot then used streets to fine tune the level the adjacent tiles. Off to try your technique now.

Great tutorial!

I look at something like this and wonder how and where I can save this on my computer for future reference.  I'm afraid if I don't do something like that I'll forget where I saw it and where it is.  It's hard enough for me to find things on my desktop let alone on a web page with many forums.

VERY NICE

Keith

When I started to play this game, I never knew sites like this existed.  My learning curve was very slow as I had to figure all this out on my own.  Anyways, it's great these sites exist and people like you take the time to teach others.
Awesome tutorial! &apls

The green seawalls are made by Jeronij. Not sure if there are to be found LEX yet.

EDIT: Had a look on LEX: Shore Conforming Seawalls V4 (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=114)

That's not a download, but the in-game leveling tool (not sure how it's called in English, since I have a German version of the game). ;)

Or do you mean the buttons at the bottom of the menu? That's the "rain mod", available here: http://www.teirusu.com/

Right click your desktop and select make "new" then "folder". Name it "SC4 LINKS" or something like that. With this tutorial page up, right click the page (not on a link) and select "create shortcut" .. this will put a shortcut on your desktop. Title it "cool harbors" or whatever .. :) Drag and drop the shortcut into the SC4 Links folder. Over time you will build a library of things you like there.. Then you can just open the folder and instantly go to the links again. If it gets too crowded, you can make subfolders in that folder.. Have fun! :)
