Title: vonderfull vorks of vil
Post by: vil on February 18, 2007, 11:04:51 AM
Well lets start from the beginning. Three years ago it suddenly became possible to make your own buildings. So i started to make the first building my eyes fell on, which happened to be the one across the road at the time. It took a year to make and helped me meet a nice group of people.

And then, not having an enormous amount of artistic invention, i turned to the building i happened to be sitting in. Took a couple of months to finish but really it asked more questions than it gave answers. A 19th century european school that can be plopped was sort of OK but old euro residential buildings just dont fit into the original game no matter what optics you try to apply. So i didnt feel much like publishing until i got things figured out properly.

Mmmm theres a Dutch special coming and the only "secret" about it is that i only learned to make farms yesterday.

Back to the sequence, sort of. I managed to start one more city building, which in the end, took more than a year to finish. It is now, but since it needs one more building to complete a lot, this remains a work in progress. I also decided to drop czech names and not wanting to attempt too much humour in english, after the elementary school and what shall now be known as "Coldstone Apartments" comes "The Two Lions Building".

Then, the inevitable happened, we moved out of town and suddenly i had a new building to sit in and model... im a bit boring and predictable, you know. These got called Ludwigs Recluse, Adalberts Home and Johns Villa, ordered by wealth level.

Playing around with Gascookers stuff - still trying to figure out how to set up "european" city growth - i found i needed a few corner buildings. Part one of a set of three is The Royal Pavilion Shop, part 2 of said opus will be the "Copenhagen bank", or, possibly the "Copenhagen Building Society" and part 3 the "Brighton Hotel" which i hope to make up a better name for before its finished. So this is part 1.

This is my latest distraction, mostly wouanagaines fault really, so far its a stage 2 farm, i have a bit of inspiration for another stage 3 farm (with tulip fields and a better parking lot and glass house) and misty ideas about a ploppable landmark version of some sort. I think i rushed the portable loos a bit. Are there any good ones floating around?

Oh yea its secret, that should arouse some interest  :satisfied:

And let's face it, it is not my fault, it is jeroni's one :p

Zat iz ze million dollar qestion! My aim is ASAP but i need a bit of help and right now have no easy way of getting it...

Good point with the windows, notice the later windows are darker - cant go back it was done in gmax and i dont think i could live through a gmax render of a large building.

BTW the red roofed thing is residential. The school (top) is the only one thats published. I will put them up on LEX as soon as a pack is ready with the models and then release the lots as they get done and tested.

The farm is set up to be fairly slope friendly but not grow on a big slope.

Not sure what i should shoot for with the farm stats and need to find those tulip fields.

Apart from geoffhaw's flags this is the only custom animation as far as I know.
Title: Re: vonderfull vorks of vil
Post by: Zaphod on August 23, 2007, 05:05:20 PM
amazing, I never knew that was even possible

for some reason I was always under the impression that those flags were actually something originally done my maxis and that geoffhaw was able to figure out how they were made

So if custom animations can be done, what else will you guys create someday?

The format of this type of animation has been explored in the past but practical application has been limited.
Its a question of having and applying proper tools to a model so basically 95 % wouanagaines work. Should have mentioned him in the description but was in a hurry. Sorry wou, i will compensate when i release my lot.

Cool stuff on trains and scale by Rivit here (http://users.tpg.com.au/rivit/rvt-simcity-articles1.htm).
Glad i havent tried to release any of my stuff before reading all that.

Actually i got discouraged from the game for a long time because of maxis and custom content scale issues.

I do disagree with Rivit slightly on the "should you be able to see individual bricks", "trains must fit in tunnels" and "maxis smoke is bad" issues. Also there is a slight mix up in the cube pictures and erroneous conclusions arise possibly from that.
I believe brick walls have to look like brick walls not orange peel or mud in spite of scale inaccuracy.
Also that either the game tunnels or the tracks must be wrong. If people size and apparent track gauge pull one way and tunnels and real scale pull the other way, train dimensions must fall somewhere in between (my current favourite compromise is x,y=115% and z=130%).
I still have hope for effect based smoke on engines.

If youre making a box shaped building its IMHO fine to make it 10 or 20 percent taller. It would be nice and clean to have everything the right scale but we are stuck with giant people and base textures on a 16m grid.

If you really wanted to make a cube look like a cube you could correct it for every zoom and rotation. One should remember that the trimetric projection means a cube is meant to look distorted :D

Back to a project im working on and right now looks like it has no big obstacles but time:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg593.imageshack.us%2Fimg593%2F5649%2Fvilslopedpavement.jpg&hash=1fbdeef1c8181d4b04488449a51da6031ef33951) (http://img593.imageshack.us/i/vilslopedpavement.jpg/)

Prop placement is still by Sithlrd98 so you can tell where i started.

Well what happened there a couple of years ago was that everything works fine until its mirrored and rotated and then one of the properties is the wrong way around. It took so much work to get around, that that I gave up. If I get a new job with shorter hours and my kids grow up and no-one makes a new decent city-building game I might have a look at that again.

So much for that.

I have been following what Xannepan has been up to and there was some discussion about steam trains with maxis particle smoke. And i made those once upon a time so here is one by Rivit hex edited by a younger me: https://www.dropbox.com/s/b8qsu6djzmhcz0i/RVT%20DB%20Class%2023%20SE%20Replace.dat (https://www.dropbox.com/s/b8qsu6djzmhcz0i/RVT%20DB%20Class%2023%20SE%20Replace.dat)
