This should be very interesting, Eugene.  I assume that you will be looking for North African, Arabian and Southeast Asian buildings and settings.  I have no idea what is out there along those lines, but it should present a pretty fair challenge.

Good luck!

Maidan Al-Jazair Mosque & French Quarter

A prominent feature along the waterfront of Lagouira is the Maidan Al-Jazair Mosque.  Completed in 1990 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Gharbiyya's independence, the mosque is built on reclaimed land.  This was inspired by the verse in the Qur'an that states "the throne of Allah was built on water".  The minaret towers 210 m (689 ft) into the sky and is the world's tallest.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1212.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc458%2Feugenelavery%2FZouerat%2520Islamic%2520Federation%2FLagouiraImage3.jpg&hash=97d0661767b00bf700bcada47a7670512608c83c)

The interior of the mosque is a sight to behold with almost all of the materials used in the construction taken from Gharbiyya, except for the columns and chandeliers.  It took six thousand traditional Gharbiyyan artisans five years to create the abundant and beautiful mosaics, stone and marble floors and columns, sculpted plaster moldings, and carved and painted wood ceilings.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1212.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc458%2Feugenelavery%2FZouerat%2520Islamic%2520Federation%2FHassan_II_Mosque_Casablanca_Interior_2011.jpg&hash=321921584be7565586ff3df36589704ab336f260)

The Maidan Al-Jazair Mosque sits infront of the French Quarter of Gharbiyya which contains the exclusive Hotel Cambronne and Le Grand Cafe.  This section of Gharbiyya is always teeming with tourists who are eager to see the little part of Europe that exists in this Western Saharan country.

The next destination on this City Journal will be a visit to the ancient walled part of Lagouira, the Medina.  A glimpse of the Medina can be seen below.

Great start. I like the walled part of the city. I am surprised how well the Paris buildings fit in this scenario.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments.  I hope you enjoy today's visit to the city of Lagouira.

Medina & Notre Dame de Lagouira

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1212.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc458%2Feugenelavery%2FZouerat%2520Islamic%2520Federation%2FLagouiraImage15.jpg&hash=4f2816609d33712eb1f513786745f0bdd1d0a8cf)

Today we will be visiting the medina.  A medina is an ancient walled city frequently found in North Africa.  The streets are very narrow and maze-like but are packed with people and markets selling everything one could think of.  Sitting in the middle of Lagouira's medina is the Al-Qadereya Mosque.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1212.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc458%2Feugenelavery%2FZouerat%2520Islamic%2520Federation%2FLagouiraImage12.jpg&hash=1063616fde6cd05d46b88a4958ac9fece6770018)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1212.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc458%2Feugenelavery%2FZouerat%2520Islamic%2520Federation%2FLagouiraImage8.jpg&hash=1f2fd5f1923136cecc30da2dc76e9db3432dcf18)

By night, the medina is quiet with the green glow of Al-Qadereya mosque accompanying a few late night card-games.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1212.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc458%2Feugenelavery%2FZouerat%2520Islamic%2520Federation%2FLagouiraImage10.jpg&hash=3a533117bd032309a7d7a681d5800c1ae9b6fb5a)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1212.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc458%2Feugenelavery%2FZouerat%2520Islamic%2520Federation%2FLagouiraImage14.jpg&hash=a0fbb4ede07ab3858be6fe65e6be053284b80b89)

Notre Dame de Lagouira was completed in 1892 and is the largest cathedral in Northern Africa.  It sits on the promenade which runs along the Atlantic ocean and surely boasts one of the best setting for a cathedral in the world.  While Gharbiyya is mostly Muslim, there is a sizeable Roman Catholic community, particularly amongst the French Gharbiyyan people (Gharbiyyan's with French ancestry).

I hope you have enjoyed this latest visit to the city of Lagouira but for now the sun sets on another Gharbiyyan day.

Today's update is a mosaic of the city of Lagouira.  Enjoy!

Your Eastern city is well laid out and makes me think of cities like Oran or Algers, with French Quarter surrounded by this beautiful eastern buildings. Excellent work.

apeguy: I like the mosques too.  It is a shame there aren't more out there to use.
Silur: Thanks!
Kokopelli: I hope you enjoy today's mosaic which is much bigger.
noahclem: The Medina was a lot of work using Lot Editor.
moeom: Thanks!

Lagouira's skyline mostly consists of low-rise commercial and residential buildings built in a typical north african architectural style.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FGharbiyya%2Flagouira_image_19.jpg&hash=e5a5a123483ed2cc36597ff758bb5c336f703ae8)

Lagouira however does have a few notable skyscrapers including the Gharbiyyan Interior Ministry building which was built in the 1970s and towers 113m (371ft) above the city.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FGharbiyya%2Flagouira_image_20.jpg&hash=19b6787898aa97a56086127d30eb556e921c85f7)

The Gharbiyyan Parliamentary Building is perhaps the most modern-looking structure in the city and houses offices of all the most important people in the country.  Across the road from the Parliamentary Building is Gharbiyya's largest shopping complex.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FGharbiyya%2Flagouira_image_16.jpg&hash=af2808c3b7a95a812fddfa2470715bd8d782aeaa)

Near the Medina is the Djama'a al-Kebir Mosque which gently illuminates the night sky.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FGharbiyya%2Flagouira_image_18.jpg&hash=bbf31aa182619e45f3581b7cef32ab540b9352b6)

Finally,  I will leave you with an overview of the city...

A couple little suggestions: It'd be nice to see some mid-rise bats between the skyscrapers and the middle-eastern looking bats--maybe those JRJ euro buildings I saw you using elsewhere in the update. A mod to remove "wealthification" from your rails would be a nice addition too.

Keep up the outstanding work  &apls

Today you will just be seeing some random scenes from the city of Lagouira.

Lagouira's Olympic Stadium (capacity 50,000) fills the role of the National Stadium of Gharbiyya.  The national football team plays all of its international matches here and both of Lagouira's football clubs (Al Nasr & Al Ittihad) also play here.  The Olympic Stadium sits on the waterfront and is very close to the International Airport.

Al Nasr
Al Nasr (Victory in Arabic) is Gharbiyya's most popular club with a fanatical fanbase.  Al Nasr has won the Gharbiyyan League 10 times, the Gharbiyyan Cup 5 times, and the Gharbiyyan SuperCup 1 time.  The club has recently been going through a tough period having not won the League title in over 10 years.  This drought has not affected their fan support however, as you can see below.

Al Ittihad
Al Ittihad (United in Arabic) is Gharbiyya's second most popular club, but the most succesful.  Al Ittihad has won the League 16 times, the Cup 6 times, and the SuperCup 10 times.  Al Ittihad has also had the most success in African Continental Football of any Gharbiyyan club, having reached the semi finals of the CAF Champions League in 2007.  Similar to Al Nasr, Al Ittihad also has fanatical fans who cover themselves in red at any chance they get.

Today we will be visiting Lagouira International Airport; a small, poorly planned, yet bustling airport.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FGharbiyya%2Flagouira_airport.jpg&hash=8aa8f4ad6785c50fd7a80b68d168a9089a574a78)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FGharbiyya%2Flagouira_airport_4.jpg&hash=1bbbdb11558e21edfeb9750281b0acf038833ada)

The terminal has recently been upgraded and was designed by a Japanese firm.  Due to space constrictions the airport only has eight gates and a small cargo terminal on the other side of the runway.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FGharbiyya%2Flagouira_airport_3.jpg&hash=193a5625a0a7eabfb93192cf9c5587fcc3bb18ad)

Another interesting feature of the airport is how close the runway is to a major avenue and the beach.  Plane-spotting tourists often gather on the beach to get a close-up view of the airport.

Now that you know how to get to Gharbiyya there is no excuse not to visit this fine country!  We are almost finished with the city of Lagouira and will probably be moving on to another country in the Zouérat Islamic Federation, either the Mahibadhoos (a collection of atolls off the coast of Africa), or the Emirate of Dhahran (an ultra modern, oil-rich Emirate in the Middle East).  Let me know which you would like to visit next and I will see what can be arranged.

great update and wonderful airport!  &apls really like this Dubai (but still unique) style.

but may i criticize... no, suggest 2 details? first i'm missing a direct link of runway and taxiway. i think the pilots would need to know where to enter/leave the runway  &mmm
second i would place the seawall round the corner it better separates the beach from the airport/city. but as i said, just details ;)

The next member nation of Zouérat Islamic Federation we will be visiting is the Mahibadhoos, a collection of atolls off the western coast of Africa. The Mahibadhoos have a history of many different cultures settling and governing the low-lying atolls, from the Arabs, to the Berbers, to the French, English, Portuguese and Spanish. All of these influences have lead to the nation gaining a very unique cultural identity and language. Independence was eventually granted from Britian in 1965. Despite being a prominent tourist destination due to the sandy white beaches and clear blue water, the Mahibadhoos to this this day remain a very conservative group of islands with a strict adherence to the Islamic faith.

Mahibadhoos General Information

Official Name: Islamic Republic of Mahibadhoos
Short Name: Mahibadhoos
Demonym: Mahibadhian
Capital: Dhiraagu
Largest City: Dhiraagu
Currency: Zouérat Dirham
Official Language: Mahibadhian
Demographics: Mahibadhian (96%), Other (4%)
Religion: Sunni Islam (100%) - Sunni Islam is the only legally permitted religion in the Mahibadhoos.
Internet TLD: .mb
Total Population: 320,000
Life expectancy: Men - 61, Women - 63
Literacy rate: 96%

Climate
The Mahibadhoos have a tropical climate with weather that is warm year-round. The year can be divided into a dry season (winter) and rainy season (summer). The low-lying Mahibadhoos are at risk from rising sea-levels, although the evidence around rising sea-levels is still disputed by some scientists. The highest point in the Mahibadhoos is just 2.4 meters above sea-level.

Politics
The Mahibadhoos is a functioning democracy although there has been a history of coups and popular protests forcing the resignation of Presidents. The most recent was only this year when growing resentment of corruption and poor living conditions lead to weeks of protests around the country.

At first we will be visiting some of the resort islands that have made the Mahibadhoos so popular with tourists really wanting to get away from everyday life. A preview of what is to come.

Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts is an international company with resorts all around the world. The company has opened many five-star resorts in the Mahibadhoos, taking advantage of the crystal clear water, great climate, and relative isolation of the country. Tourists come from all over the world to experience a little piece of Mahibadhian paradise.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fangsana_ihuru_beach.jpg&hash=2b2e0738364fda024e3f38f2357403454ac4ddb4)

These resort islands are only used for tourism and help the country run a tourist industry that doesn't intrude on the traditional islamic cultures of the Mahibadhian people. Tourists are not permitted to visit islands which contain Mahibadhian villages.

Today we will be visiting the islands of Angsana and Ihuru, both of which are only 20 minutes by speedboat from the capital city of Dhiraagu. These resorts are built in a traditional style that allow the buildings to blend into their natural surroundings, but don't be fooled, these resorts are five-star with all the modern luxuries tourists demand.

The island of Angsana is particularly popular.

Fantastic update.
I usually look at the pics first and read after.  In this case as soon as saw the pics I thought to myself, "What a great island resort".  The point is that you perfectly accomplished what you were obviously trying to do.
Great work!

Incredible looking islands. &apls &apls It's a shame about the jagged beaches though. Is there a way you can fix that, like making the slope from beach to water smoother?

rooker1:  Good to know I achieved what I set out to do.  Things don't always look how I think they will in this game.
Kergelen:  Thanks for those MMPs.  I will put them to good use.
namspopof:  Today you will be seeing the other side of paradise.
apeguy:  I agree about the beaches.  Unfortunately it seems to be a flaw with the game or terrain mod.  I notice that shoreline can change alot depending on which terrain and beach mods I am using.  Unfortunately when the shorelines run on the diagonal against the grid they have this appearance with these mods.  I could make the edges straighter but then the islands would be completely square and not very realistic.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fmaeenboodhoo_image_3.jpg&hash=a3aab904419128a98139c58c9bf6250568825ad0)

The village of Maeenboodhoo, population about 1200, is one of the main settlements on the atoll of Hulhudheli. Hulhudheli is one of the more isolated atolls in the country and is a quite a distance from the capital of Dhiraagu. This relative isolation means that the atoll is not as modernised as other parts of the Mahibadhoos.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fmaeenboodhoo_image_1.jpg&hash=b7dcd03cdbeae64fba0a9fe1ab48fe21960b5a53)

This overcrowded island is off-limits to tourists as the Mahibadhian government wants its population to retain a conservative islamic lifestyle. Some more cynical people claim the government doesn't want the outside world to see that such poverty exists in this supposed paradise.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fmaeenboodhoo_mosaic_1.jpg&hash=f9e6e8c1f7b798e1be41fccbac25ff6a5f26a41d)

Maeenboodhoo has a bustling little port and relies on everything from food and building materials being shipped in, as you can see there is no suitable farming land at all!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fmaeenboodhoo_mosaic_2.jpg&hash=9593e668ee3f2c69d40448461fe83b0196dfe1b6)

Not far from Maeenboodhoo is the uninhabited island of Rinbudhoo. When the people of Maeenboodhoo want to escape from their crowded island they come here. Rinbudhoo really is the definition of a desert island.

 Another fantastic update!
To get rid of the jagged edges along your beach front, try to lower the land under the water.  The problem usually only occurs (to me) when the angle of the land leading into the water is not steep enough.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fbanidhoo_plastic_dump.jpg&hash=46eaad059b84df07ffea96e8445e0dad53d2c178)

Banidhoo is an artificial island in the Dhiraagu Atoll, about 6.5 kilometres from the capital of Dhiraagu. It was created in 1991 to be the municipal landfill for the capital city which was becoming overwhelmed with garbage. Banidhoo has since grown to become the major industrial hub for the Mahibadhoos.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fbanidhoo_image_2.jpg&hash=38e1b49f198758e31159e46e6ae2074cbcbc8924)

While Banidhoo has succesfully relieved Dhiraagu of its waste predicament, the process of dumping garbage indiscriminately has become an ecological hazard. Much of the garbage dumped here contains asbestos and other harmful toxic metals such as mercury and lead and threatens to leach into the sea. In light of this, the Mahibadhian government has restricted the types of waste that can be dumped on Mahibadhoo and resort islands have been encouraged to limit their non-recyclable garbage.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fbanidhoo_mosaic_1.jpg&hash=6c1736d0affc0dea94cf3b15475094efa898f991)

About 1000 workers live on Banidhoo to sort the garbage, work at the port, and in industrial warehouses. Most of the workers are poor immigrants from Gharbiyya and Mauritania and live in a rather drab housing block. A mosque was recently built on the island to provide the workforce some spiritual motivation.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fbanidhoo_mosaic_3.jpg&hash=f0fe4b75e191fd24a6186cdb0d81737790b359ed)

Banidhoo is the only major container port in the Mahibadhoos and most imports and exports go through the Banidhoo cargo terminal.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fbanidhoo_mosaic_2.jpg&hash=fb915669e403defb9e1f1fe71472c768ff9e0684)

By night, the workers of Banidhoo are still hard at work in the factories and warehouses, particularly in the Pepsi Bottling Plant that has recently opened.

Our journey through the Mahibadhoos towards the capital of Dhiraagu continues with the island of Hithadhoo, about 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) west of the capital.  Hithadhoo is one of the larger settlements in the Mahibadhoos with about 8000 people living on the island.  Due to its proximity to the capital, Hithadhoo is relatively developed, particularly compared to the island of Maeenboodhoo which we visited a few weeks ago.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fhithadhoo_mosaic.jpg&hash=bf1105f63fd1348c8a2ee30b927c8cc194ef68b2)

Due to soaring land values in crowded Dhiraagu, some companies have decided to relocate to Hithadhoo.  This gleaming new office building was built to accommodate these companies.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fhithadhoo_image_1.jpg&hash=137ff420df9ad850c0643b7576a4596f7cf6cf45)

Hithadhoo also has the best football stadium in the Mahibadhoos outside of Dhiraagu.  Victory SC, the most succesful Mahibadhian club outside of the capital play at this stadium.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fhithadhoo_image_2.jpg&hash=8f029e286163384a1dfc0152d0034b9f91d7588b)

Hithadhoo, despite being densely populated, still however retains some great beaches and places to escape the hustle and bustle.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FMahibadhoos%2Fhithadhoo_image_3.jpg&hash=f2ede463eb4e41f52e6409fcb04c229fcff0bf42)

Until next time, farewell from the Mahibadhoos.

Dhiraagu International Airport is located on the island of Hulhulé, just 1.4 kilometres from the capital, Dhiraagu. The island is largely reclaimed and in considered an administrative ward of Dhiraagu. The airport is served by multiple airlines regularly and then many charter airlines on a more sporadic basis.

While Dhiraagu International Airport may not be the busiest airport around it is a vital link between the Mahibadhoos and the rest of the world and enables the tourist industry to flourish. Today we visit Dhiraagu International Airport on the island of Hulhulé for the second and final time. Today you will see the cargo terminal...

I'm a big fan of airports in SC4, and yours is very nice! The only negative I can think of is how close the taxiway is to the passenger terminal. With that 747 parked there, most planes won't be able to continue down the taxiway. From what I can see in the pics you could probably move the taxiway and the runway a few tiles across, so the gates and the planes aren't squeezed between the terminal and the taxiway. ;) Other than that, another great update!

nbvc:  As usual, MMP flora makes all the difference.  Your sea walls are awesome too!
noahclem: Thanks, airports are fun to build.
rooker1: Thanks, Robin!
apeguy: The planes don't actually have to squeeze down the taxiway as they just take the closest entrance from the runwau and go straight to the gate.  I agree that the airport is very crowded and a 747 is unrealistic, but I wanted a Saudi Arabian plane in there.  This airport is actually a to-scale recreation of a real-life airport.
bat: Thznks for your compliments!

Just a hint of what is to come when we visit the capital of the Mahibadhoos, Dhiraagu.

Very nice teaser indeed.
The city looks great but in this case I think the water does not.  Maybe add some of JRJ Rural Culverts And Water Effects (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=125).  I suggest the pollution one...it will darken up the water in only the areas you plop the effect.  Just a thought though, give it a try and see what you think.

Dhiraagu is the capital and most populous city in the Mahibadhoos. With a 103,000 people crammed into 6 square kilometres (2 square miles), Dhiraagu contains a third of the Mahibadhian population and almost every Mahibadhian at some point either lives in or visits the city as it is the center of all administration and bureaucracy. The population has increased 80,000 in the last 25 years. The city of Dhiraagu is the only ordinary Mahibadhian city that tourists are permitted to visit and experience the traditional Islamic culture of the nation.

In the mosaic below you can see the bustling port on the northern shore of the island and the marina where tourists enter the city. Tourists can immediately immerse themselves in the main business district of the city and Jumhoree Maidhaan - the central square which is bordered by the National Islamic Centre, the National Military Headquarters, and the National Police Headquarters. Just behind the National Islamic Centre is the Sultan Park - the national garden of the Mahibadhoos. Jumhoree Maidhaan has been the center of much protest lately as the Mahibadhian people have been fighting against government corruption and poor living standards.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhiraagu%2Fdhiraagu_mosaic_3.jpg&hash=895da27bbb239dad4ead84a07ef2587b41dd5fb7)

Also near Jumhoree Maidhaan is the ancient Friday Mosque - the oldest structure in the country with its historic graveyard.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhiraagu%2Fdhiraagu_image_3.jpg&hash=3dcc9b0e24bec5b48481a6551a5e2f3632ed6f85)

Across the street from the Friday Mosque is Muliaage - the Presidential Palace which is also a historic building. Contrasting both the Friday Mosque and Muliaage is the Velaanaage Office Building, the largest and most modern office structure in the nation.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhiraagu%2Fdhiraagu_image_4.jpg&hash=0ab5702f719082114937a4c937d96dabae623915)

In a bid to improve living standards and happiness on the island the government decided to construct a man-made beach to offer a small escape from the hustle and bustle of the cramped capital. The man-made beach was built on reclaimed land and is a hit with the locals - most tourists leave their beach-going until they reach the resort islands.

By night, Dhiraagu continues to bustle with the entertainment tonight being an international football match at the National Stadium between the Mahibadhoos and Cape Verde.

Over at Jumhoree Maidhaan, the green glow of the Presidential Palce illuminates the night sky.

Today we continue our tour of Dhiraagu, the capital city of the Mahibadhoos.  Dhiraagu is an extremely crowded city but as you can see, there are a few areas reserved for recreation - these basketball and football courts being a good example of this.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhiraagu%2Fdhiraagu_mosaic_4.jpg&hash=f0b9721d695835ab7fab398cd5297e3506e45bc0)

Dhiraagu has a sizeable commercial port that is the second biggest in the country.  Banidhoo, which we saw in an earlier update has the nations biggest port.

Another spot of recreation, Henveiru Stadium (capacity 500) which is home to local soccer club Eagles FC and acts as a training ground for the Mahibadhian national team when the National Stadium is unavailable.

Only one reply... :(

apeguy: Thanks for your kind comments.  Yes, Dhiraagu is indeed based on Malé in the Maldives - infact it is essentially a recreation of the city within the limitations of SC4.

A couple of mosaics today which prominently display the National Sports Complex which contains basketball and tennis courts, football training fields, and the National Cricket Stadium. Cricket is a rapidly growing sport in the Mahibadhoos, despite being one of the lowest ranked national teams.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhiraagu%2Fdhiraagu_mosaic_8.jpg&hash=247052696ade089afc0cfc5f7d91e9396772a4b9)

And finally, a mosaic which shows the entire island of Dhiraagu; I think this shot shows just how crowded the capital city is. The small size of the island is popular with tourists as they can walk the entire city and experience centuries of Mahibadhian culture in one afternoon before heading off to the resort islands

(Please treat the following image as unofficial as I don't consider its appearance to be up to the standards I wish to set in this CJ - unfortunately the sea walls I use do not look great at this zoom level and some of the buildings have a strange appearance also).

The Emirate of Dhahran is the wealthiest member of the Zouérat Islamic Federation with an economy based around oil, real estate, and tourism.  Dhahran, which is essentially a city-state, lies on the Arabian Gulf and has long been a city of historical importance due to trading routes, pearl diving, and more recently, oil.  The earliest settlement known as Dhahran was established in 1833 by Sheikh Maktoum bin Buti al Maktoum who convinced about 800 people to follow him from Saudi Arabia and establish a new settlement.  In the 20th century, Dhahran was mostly under British Governance until independence was granted in 1969.  The discovery of oil in the 1960s quickly transformed Dhahran from a sleepy fishing village to the modern Emirate it is today.  The growth of the Emirate has accelerated at an unprecedented pace over the last 20 years as Dhahran has diversified its economy due to the limited supply of oil.  It is often said that a third of the world's construction cranes can be found in Dhahran!

The Emirate of Dhahran has experienced remarkable growth over the last two decades and it is often claimed that Dhahran is the fastest growing city in the history of the planet.  One neighbourhood that has been at the forefront of this growth is Jumeirah which up until recently was mostly empty desert and uninhabited beaches.  Today, Jumeirah is a fashionable residential neighbourhood where many of the wealthy foreign workers reside, and also a popular tourist hub with numerous hotels and resorts lining the coast.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhahran%2Fburj_al_arab_logo.jpeg&hash=4925f3267400516f27b7ab37d2a4760fa104fc5f)

Burj Al Arab is perhaps the worlds most famous hotel and certainly the most luxurious.  At 321 metres it is the fourth tallest hotel in the world and its completion in 1999 officially announed Dhahran to the world.  The revolutionary 'sail' design and construction on an artificial island was implemented upon orders of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who wanted the hotel to be iconic.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FSC4DDhahran%2Fdhahran_mosaic_2.jpg&hash=52c146fa3425f1c667f6584817b9ac1836be2126)

Upon entering Burj Al Arab, guests are immediately struck by the large atrium which runs the full height of the hotel.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhahran%2Fburj_al_arab_lobby.jpg&hash=2ab82ba40bd9998c6a05489d3efaa8ba37ad79de)

The Burj Al Arab is unique in that every room is a luxury suite, the largest being 780 square metres, the smallest being 169 square metres.  Prices of the suites vary from $1,000 per night to $27,000 per night.  The Royal Suite is perhaps the most luxurious of them all.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhahran%2Fburj_al_arab_suite.jpg&hash=af33dd7fbaa786bcf6a06ede95e90653797646d5)

Wild Wadi waterpark is situated on Jumeirah Beach across from Burj Al Arab and is one of the most popular destinations for tourists looking to relieve themselves of the intense heat of Dhahran.  Wild Wadi contains numerous swimming pools and boasts the largest water slide outside of North America.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FSC4DDhahran%2Fdhahran_mosaic_5.jpg&hash=1b84984eb1c819cd4b12f4d25949633673bb8535)

Next to Wild Wadi Water Park is Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Apartments.  Built in 1997, Jumeirah Beach Hotel was the first major resort hotel in Dhahran and its wavy design is inspired by the sea and nicely compliments the sail shaped Burj Al Arab.  Previously this stretch of Jumeirah Beach was home to floating oil storage tanks and ship wrecking yards so the transformation of the beach is nothing short of remarkable and further shows the growth of the Emirate.  The hotel also contains a separate conference center located right in front of the main hotel buildings.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FSC4DDhahran%2Fdhahran_mosaic_3.jpg&hash=739148f2e959f77ccc4cf60a947a07285fc4f745)

That is all for today, we will continue our tour of the Jumeirah district next time.

Just look at the Maldives and create custom lots similar to the country's largest city, Male.   :P  Just download all the BATs you think you need for your custom lots.

As for the update, great update!  As I said at ST, the custom lotting really brings out the BATs and effectively creates that high-class feeling.

The neighbourhood of Jumeirah has seen rapid residential growth over the last ten years.  Its close proximity to beaches, shopping, and industry have made it very popular with expat workers.  Enjoy the suburban monotony of Jumeirah in the mosaic below.

The Mall of the Emirates, located in Al Barsha district next to Sheikh Al Maktoum Road (the major highway of Dhahran), is the second largest shopping mall in the Emirate.  It contains 220,000 m2 of retail space with 520 stores and 8 anchor stores which include Carrefour, Centrepoint, Debenhams, Harvey Nichols, Jashanmal, Marks & Spencer, Virgin Megastore, and VOX Cinemas.

Shoppers from all over the world travel to Dhahran to enjoy the Mall of the Emirates, and because of this, the mall also contains three five-star hotels.  To the left you can see the Westin, and to the right you can see the Pullman Hotel.

The third hotel, The Kempinski Hotel, is located infront of Ski Dhahran.

Emerging out of the hostile desert, Ski Dhahran brings the slopes of Europe to the Middle East and is yet another example of Dhahran defying its location.

With all of the attractions the Mall of the Emirates has to offer, the Al Barsha district has become a very fashionable place to live with new apartment buildings and condos rising up from the desert floor, including some very sizeable skyscrapers.

At first glance the Emirate of Dhahran may seem to be full of skyscrapers and mansions, but there is much more to this Emirate than meets the eye.  Situated close to the Mall of the Emirates and Sheikh Al Maktoum Road is Al Quoz Industrial District.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhahran%2Fjumeirah_mosaic_10.jpg&hash=f52bbeeca6d3013ff97843987c51a7e2d6bf89f4)

Al Quoz is one of the biggest industrial hubs in the Middle East and has factories and stores representing most of the world's major companies, including retail stores such as Walmart, Target, and Ikea.

Covering more than 40 hectares and consisting of 4.5 kilometres of waterways, Madinat Jumeirah is one of the most exclusive resorts in the Emirate of Dhahran.  Located adjacent to Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Burj Al Arab, and Wild Wadi Water Park, Madinat Jumeirah is just a 30 minute drive from Dhahran International Airport and a 10 minute drive from Mall of the Emirates.

Opened in 2003, Madinat Jumeirah offers luxury hotels, apartments, shopping and dining to tourists from all over the world.  The architecture is Arabian inspired and the underlying concept is to recreate traditional Dhahranian life as it used to be in the days of pearl diving and fishing.  The waterways are also home to a turtle sanctuary, reaffirming Dhahran's commitment to the enviroment.

Wow! Just read up on two countries worth, and I say you remain the king of mosaics, so many of those are just stunning. The range of city styles you cover is also amazing - island paradise, island slum, suburban wasteland, historic districts, modern high rises, gorgeous beach resorts - it's all here somewhere. Also, I can't believe someone actually BATted the Dubai ski slope  ::) indeed one of the more ridiculous buildings in the world. Keep up the great work!

Oh, and what is the M.C. Escher-esque building near the bottom of the last photo of your September 20th post?

AAAAAMAAAZING! Saw this on Simtropolis as well, and I have to say that these are one of the most stunning images and mosaics I've ever seen. Your input of detail into these Middle-Eastern cities are unparalleled.

Been checking out this MD lately, what a unique style!
I'm also very glad to see that my old models are still being used, and in such imaginative ways!

RickD: Thanks, the canals are a LE creation.
Ricky112233: The main problem with this MD is that I always want to live in Dhahran whenever I work on it.
whatevermind: Thanks for reading through my MD, I have enjoyed creating three very different countries so far.  Is this the building you mean? http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/16988-coco-park/
Republic: Thank you for your kind words, they mean a lot.
DebussyMan: Great BATs such as yours typically work in almost any setting if used wisely.
noahclem: Thank you for commenting!
apeguy: Those palm trees are a great recent addition to the STEX.

Umm Suqeim is a largely residential neighbourhood which borders Jumeirah.  The waterfront district of Umm Suqeim features much less development than Jumeirah, but one project is the Umm Suqeim Fishermen Harbour.  Unfortunately the credit crisis which has hit Dhahran bad, has halted construction on this project.  In this mosaic below you can see that the harbour has been developed but the rest of the man-made peninsula awaits residential development.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majhost.com%2Fgallery%2Feugenelavery%2FDhahran%2Fjumeirah_mosaic_17.jpg&hash=09e8e4ba975bf31ebb7daf76f4c4d34f252cf42f)

Whilst housing some luxury yachts, this harbour project is also intended for use by the traditional fishermen - a nod to the traditional fish and pearl merchants who were once the backbone of the Emirate before oil.

Please join us next time as we continue our tour of the Umm Suqeim district.

[Authors note: Please accept my apologies for the inactivity of this CJ recently, I had to go to Nigeria for a couple of weeks because of work which put my sim city work behind schedule, I am currently busy working away on Dhahran, but just doing some rather uninteresting suburban and industrial sprawl at the moment.]

Indeed, that's the one. Thanks for the link!

Ah, the indefinitely unfinished residential development - one of the more unfortunate realities of suburban growth (or lack thereof, I might say).

Business Bay is a central business district under construction in the Emirate of Dhahran.  Business Bay is set between Sheikh Al Maktoum Road and the extended Dhahran creek.  Thanks to the vision of Sheikh Maktoum and the marvels of modern engineering, it is now possible to have waterfront views in the middle of the desert!  Business Bay is expected to be completed by 2020 and to become the financial hub of the Middle East.

Beautiful town!

Lovely work on the different area, the beach and the marina are well done.

As Kergelen said, try to put some flora instead of all NOB's walls, it'll give a less...." birck " feel and a more oldish town one.

Also, I know it makes the game laggy, but try to turn the shadow on when you take pictures. Just go to the graphic option ingame, turn them at max, take the pictures and then turn them at the lowest setting, don't worry you'll just have to zoom out a few times ( one or two generally) for the shadows to disappear again.

I Say that because the picture of the old town with the white paved street would look much much better of there was shadows making the streets darker.

The brazilian houses are a good choice and also the street near the sea.
IMO the small spaces in the mediterranean small towns are the most difficult thing to achieve and you have done very well &apls

This is the Fontvieille area of Monaco, which is the most modern part of the Prinicipality. I hope you enjoy this slightly different update.

vortext: I am still trying to locate that fence. I tend to rename a lot of props so I can find them easy in LE, still searching for the original. I will let you know if I find it.
Themistokles: I have been to Africa so I have some first-hand experience on what it is like. Google Earth also helps a lot.
FrankU: I am hoping you enjoy the lotting in this MD.
benedict: Hopefully I can return to number one soon. Very hard to get comments on SC4D these days, not like a few years ago!

I like chaotic cities in SC4... I think yours is a masterpiece. I forget the grid when looking at your images!!

noahclem: Thanks, I put a lot of thought into what BATs to use.
belfastsocrates: Thanks for visiting!

vortext: I guess Lotting is my thing.

To celebrate the 2014 FIFA World Cup, we visit Rio de Janeiro's iconic Copacabana district. During the World Cup, the beach will be transformed into a FIFA Fanzone where fans from around the world will gather to watch the matches live on big screens. Who will win it all? Brazil, Germany, Argentina, or the Netherlands?

Your pics look fantastic  It might look even better if the crowd watching the game (I suppose) on the beach was a bit denser.

Well I'm not really interested in football  :-\ The ones that play the best should win
