Title: GaryReggae's BAT Exhibition
Post by: GaryReggae on February 18, 2007, 05:03:58 AM
Hi there folks, just settled into this new forum and thought it was worth showing you all what I'm currently up to.

This is my main current project, in a relatively advanced stage although still lots to do.  I haven't finalised any of the textures yet.  It's a tyre factory that was located in Brynmawr, South Wales, I did have a go at it a few years ago but my BAT skills were less developed then and I now have some plans and elevation drawings so I can do the place far more justice although it won't be 100% accurate.  It's arguably the most stunning industrial building ever built in the UK and it is a crime that the authorities allowed it to be demolished, despite it being Listed.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg75.imageshack.us%2Fimg75%2F9475%2F18feb2006001yc5.jpg&hash=e1c9f820d33287bec0930a098c9199c8a2946992)

At the top left of the image with the barrel-vaulted shell roofs is the 'Drug Room', where all the materials required to make rubber were prepared and combined, to the left under a second set of BV shell roofs is the milling room and at the bottom are offices, workshops and welfare facilities.  The jutting out sections of the office block facade contain cloakroom while the far right section of it contains the entrance lobby.  The building on the top-right on its own is the Boiler House.

Here's an internal pic of the main production floor:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg296.imageshack.us%2Fimg296%2F9611%2F18feb2006002ge0.jpg&hash=929e55d76151440d298dc0be1d52dfba47896f5f)

Here's an aerial photo of the real thing: (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ribapix.com%2Fimage.php%3Fi%3D1734%26amp%3Br%3D2%26amp%3Bt%3D4%26amp%3Bx%3D1&hash=b057feab49d174fc140e3797f9c0a3a6464cc094)

I've also been working on this ASDA supermarket, for those of you not familiar with ASDA, they're one of the UK's largest supermarket chains and were taken over by Wal-Mart fairly recently.

Aha...Welcome from my part of the World (Wales)...Brynmawr is not too far from me (a couple of valleys over) but when it comes to the Welsh Assembly and their grand plans for the regeneration of Wales, "Listed" means bugger all.

I found this though, don't know if you have it or if it helps:

Good luck with it.

I hope this project is still being worked on.  It would be a great loss if it wasn't.  I really like the tire plant as is, any further improvement would be outstanding.

Sorry folks, it's been absolutely ages since I've been here, RL and all that has been keeping me busy.  :(

I've got lots of buildings in various stages of development still but I have to say I haven't particularly made a lot of progress with many of them lately but I will try and get some stuff finished although I know I've said that before!!!

Projects in my portfolio include:

- Brynmawr tyre factory - structurally almost complete but needs interior detailing and texturing
- A new scrapyard
- BBC TV Centre (a cut-down version of the real thing) - needs rendering
- Unit 42: contemporary high rise residential apartments - needs detailing
- ASDA supermarket - nearly finished
- Various city centre High Street retail buildings
- A large office and print works complex (cannot be released until 2010/2011 when the real version is gone)
- Another seaside amusements/Bingo/leisure complex
- The Tricorn - huge Brutalist shopping centre
- Suburban shops
- A few pubs
- Primary school (typical 60s SCOLA design, closely based on my old school)
- Huge hospital (mega project in the early stages)
- Huge shopping centre old Bull Ring style

I am also planning a revamped version of my Police HQ (Arthur Flowers House) and Castleman House, an unreleased Brutalist office block that featured in some of my city journals.

I will try and get some of my old BATs uploaded here, I'm sure Barby can help me with that!  The lots will need re-doing as my original ones were created before all the new props and stuff were created.  I cannot release the Tax Office I'm afraid as the owner of the real building complained about it, despite the fact that it is very different and much smaller and you can see a much more accurate image of the site on Live Maps but once the real building is demolished in a few years time, there can be no objections!  The same applies to my award-winning Print Works BAT although if you want a copy, I can email either to you.

Certainly I am keen to get my Debenhams Department Store, Clarence Pavillion (Golden Horseshoe Amusements), Brutalist Museum, UK High Street 1 (McDonalds/ Nationwide etc) and perhaps some of my older BATs onto the LEX, providing they meet the standards.

I'm not sure which buildings I want to finish first so if anyone has any particular requests to prioritise one or the other, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks guys, Barby, I will contact you via MSN later on if you are around.

Actually, it seems I uploaded some of my BATs to the official SC4 exchange about four years ago - including that elusive tax office!  You can get them here: http://simcity.ea.com/exchange/lots/results.php?keywords=gaz2tonic&keyword_search=true

If the link doesn't work, search for username gaz2tonic

The BATs there are:

Tax office
Castleman House (I didn't think I had released that!)
Concrete multi storey car park & bus station
Modern museum
Salvage yard (a lot with some custom junk props)
Industrial waste transfer station (ditto)
Police HQ (Arthur Flowers House)
Print Works (oops, thought I'd deleted that!  Too late, 4,219 people have downloaded it, what a terrible shame!)
50s Department Store - a smaller and much less detailed version of my Debenhams Department Store
Millbrook Towers - the original low tech version of everyone's favourite Brutalist tower block
1960s shopping mall - I like the model for this but the textures are very plain.  One of my first BATs

I will get Barby to do new lots for the better buildings, as for the older ones, if there's enough demand, I'll 'refurbish' the BATs with new textures and better detailing and then re-release them (like I did with Debenhams and I am doing with the rubber factory now)

Thanks again for all your positive comments

I'm in the process of trying to get my BBC Television Centre finished - it was "finished" before but looked a bit empty inside so I have added some furniture and edit workstations, as well as some internal walls in places where they will be visible through the glazed facade.

It is still too big for me to render but one of my BSC colleagues is going to attempt to render it for me.

I will try and post some pics later.

After that, priorities are the Tyre Factory and ASDA, both of which need a considerable amount of work to finish.

OMG, omg, OmG, oMg!

Your BBC center was probably the single BAT that moved me to star bating! How I was waiting it!! Hope it will hit the exchanges after all.

I also had been considering to "take over" your Brynmawr tire factory as it is a single most beautiful industrial building I've layed my eyes on and I thought that it definitely could do with some "facelift"  $%Grinno$%

Thanks, that is indeed an honour.  Yes, the Brynmawr tyre factory was indeed a beautiful and very unique building and the aim was to provide a modern, light and comfortable working environment for the staff which in those days was a fairly novel concept.  It was a world away from the bland tin warehouse sheds that make up the majority of industrial buildings nowadays.  The fact it was demolished was a real travesty, particularly as it was a listed building and could have been put to good use and provided work in an area where unemployment is high.  It is definitely worthy of a BAT model and I intend to try and create it at faithfully as possible from the limited drawings and photos I have.

I'll try and post a pic of my model of it so far later.

Good to see you back and from reading the posts above, finally close to releasing the BBC Television Centre which has to be one of those models that people remember and think 'pity that never got released'.  I think the Asda will be a nice addition too - it's been a while since we've had a new supermarket (never got round to it myself).

Here's the latest from the TV Centre.  Excuse the lack of textures on the walls; for some reason the GRenderer didn't render them which it does sometimes.  I have added a lot of interior detailing and have made some changes to the staff entrance as well.  I will also be adding some CCTV cameras around the site.

Very nice, perhaps you should move one of the parked cars to the 'roads', to make it look like one car is driving on the 'roads'. I can not wait to get this one already.

Thanks for all your comments, I did some more work on the detailing while in the pub last night!  I have now finished the new staff entrance lobby at the bottom of the office tower which is a double-heigh space with open staircase and turnstiles for access control.

With the ever-present threat of terrorism at such a prominent public building, I have also added a load of CCTV cameras and a security intercom at the exit barriers.

Yeah that is a good idea, I also want to put a truck near one of the loading bays which is open.  All it needs then I think is a few people models and we're nearly there.  I'm going to redo some of the textures as well at the weekend and tweak the nightlights now I have added the interior detail.

Here's something else I've been working on, it's a health clinic and ambulance station although it would not look out of place as a school.

Thanks for all your comments, yes it does look very much like Grange Hill actually!

While we're on the subject of schools, I've been working on this today, changing it from just an empty framework to a structurally complete building.  Just needs detailing and texturing now.  This one is my old primary school!

Background:

Llocation: Chandler's Ford, Hampshire
Opened: Early 1960s
Design: One of many similiar schools designed by the Hampshire County Council architect's department, the school was prefabricated from a public sector structure called SCOLA using a steel frame I believe and prefab timber/glass facade panels.
Facilities: Ten classrooms, dedicated music room, library, assembly/dining/sports hall, full catering service, special needs classroom and various ancillary rooms, eg admin offices, staff room etc.
Grounds: Playing field, two concrete playgrounds, two landscaped courtyards, conservation area and adventure playground
Height:  The two main classroom blocks have two storeys each; the larger of the two having a staircase at each end (no lifts) while the smaller classroom block only has one set of stairs and thus does not comply with current fire escape regulations.  Indeed, this block was badly damaged by fire in 1989 but fortunately while the building was unoccupied.  The other parts of the building are single storey except for the entrance hall which is 1 and a half height.
Services: The building is totally naturally ventilated (except for the kitchens which have extract hoods) and enjoys opening windows throughout.  Heating was originally provided by built-in oil-fired air heaters in each classroom - a very popular option in the education sector and cheap at the time of construction.  However these have caused numerous problems  - the underfloor fuel supply lines leaked, the heaters are inefficient, expensive to run, unreliable, expensive to maintain and take up a lot of space.  A fault with one of the heaters caused the aforementioned 1989 fire and were immediately decomissioned and eventually replaced by a conventional gas fired central heating system with radiators.

I like the school, but compared the classrooms to the central rooms (main hall, office, kitchen ect.),
I would suggest to add another classroom wing at the top:

Pat: Thanks, I've finally got back my enthusiasm for BAT and your kind comments help motivate me to continue!

art128: Thanks!

Vester: Thanks for your feedback, I agree that it could probably benefit from an extra classroom block, ten classrooms is not much for the size of the other facilities.  I can't see the image you posted at the moment as I am at work and stupid Websense blocks Imageshack and most other image hosting services but I will have a look when I get home and probably add an extra block.

Thanks Vester, I am very impressed by the revised version of the school you posted, it looks very realistic!

That is indeed a good place to put the extra block as the corridor to the existing smaller classroom block can be continued into the new one via the link building you proposed.  I will put the library into the link building which will free up one of the classrooms in the larger block.

Thanks, here's a picture of the school with the extra block added.  I moved the link block across to the centre so that it doesn't block out too many classroom windows, the link will contain the Library.

I haven't done much else to be honest apart from adding covers to the heater risers.

Looking good. Maybe add some windows to the right side of the extra wing. (like on the left side)

How does it look from the other side ?

EDIT: The picture doesn't show up in you post  &mmm

Found the link to it in code for your post:

Looking at the picture, one thing that just popped up, fire escapes from the top floors. Here is one from Denmark. (http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/8548/brandtrappeju2.jpg)

Just to point, there's a few schools like that where I live and they don't have fire escapes. Basically, you have to run or jump out the window (if they even made opening windows in those jail cells public education facilities.) ;)

Well,sim-al2, most buildings dont have as much roof junk as we add to them. If it looks good to a building, there is an idea to add it.

Not a school per se but my college has buildings where all the stairways are outdoors, negating the need for fire escapes. The insides only have one elevator for handicap access.

I have never seen fire escapes on schools, much less on any building built in the past 30 years. Most schools occupying more than one floor would have designated interior concrete stairways leading outside equipped with fire doors. With the 3-4 hour fire rating that most of these doors have, fire escapes no longer serve a purpose.

*BUMP!*

Sorry, not much progress to report and my GMAX is not working at the moment but I have been working on adding more detail to the TV centre, it is hopefully nearly finished now.  At this very late stage I am considering getting rid of the garden in the grounds and replacing it with a small workshop block - modelling gardens is not my forte and the original idea of having it as props would involve constructing a very complex LOD structure which I tried before and it caused the render to fail.

With regards to the school, it is interesting that you mention fire escapes.  The board of governers for the RL school protested to the council (who run the school) about the lack of a fire escape, however the council dismissed it as too expensive.  The larger two-storey block is OK as it has a stairwell at each end - so if there is a fire in one stairwell, the other is accessible.  The smaller classroom blocks only have one internal stairwell and there was indeed a fire, however fortunately, it was while there was nobody in the building.

I agree that it is unusual in the UK for this type of building to have a fire escape, I'm sure modern building regulations probably dictate that new buildings must have an external fire escape unless there is more than one stairwell but back in the 1960s, things were not so tight.

On another subject, I am also planning some low-rise walk-up flats.  I'd like to do something like this (1950s Art Deco style flats):

<iframe width="425" height="240" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/sv?cbp=12,22.273012999018782,,0,5&amp;cbll=50.906014,-1.39894&amp;panoid=&amp;v=1&amp;hl=en&amp;gl=uk"></iframe>
<small><a href="http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&amp;source=embed&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=so14+1ll&amp;sll=53.774689,-3.999023&amp;sspn=0,326.513672&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=50.913587,-1.396723&amp;spn=0,359.975495&amp;t=h&amp;z=14&amp;iwloc=A&amp;layer=c&amp;cbll=50.906014,-1.39894&amp;panoid=X7RtX5Ae5M1wSFAwvq6Znw&amp;cbp=12,22.273012999018782,,0,5" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

Also, something like the infamous Park Hill flats in Sheffield but that's a longer term thing.

Good news Gary.
I wondered when you would give news of your bat. Haste to know that " TV center " is soon finished, and for gardens, you can use the 3d model of tree by Swi21, on LEX.

@ Earth Quake: No news on ASDA yet, it is nearly finished and just needs detailing and finalising of textures (the devil is always in the detail as they say!).

@ Toxicpiano: Hmmn yes, I don't know wjy they are gutting Park Hill, I thought it was a listed building (I recorded a BBC documentary about it on Friday which I look forward to watching)

Good afternoon folks, I've been busy this morning with yet another new BAT.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg25.imageshack.us%2Fimg25%2F6369%2Fcarolinahouse01.jpg&hash=5316162f6080bc8a47bc5348ef5073f56ba4dd99)

As Rolf would say, "Can you tell what it is yet?"

It's another council housing project, this time a 14 storey block with a smaller block adjacent to it.  It's based on a real building, however I have had to change bits because the real building is on a slope so the smaller block is, in reality, only five or six storeys, but on mine, it's about 10.  I wonder if anyone will recognise this, it featured quite prominently in a couple of episodes of a UK TV show last year...

Yes, well done!  The flats featured in series 2 of Skins - Maxxie lived in one of the flats and so did Sketch.

Ignore the roof texture, I have only put very basic textures on to show this, the final version will be much more realistic.

The real building for this is in Bristol, just North of the city centre, next to a very Brutalist hospital building that makes my attempts at designing a Brutalist hospital look like something Prince Charles would approve of!!!  It's called Carolina House and there are two very similiar blocks adjacent to it although they have different colour schemes.

While it featured in 'Skins', there are a number of inaccuracies in it!  Episode 2 of series 2 makes you think that there are two blocks close to each other, as Sketch looks directly into Maxxie's bedroom, however in reality, the blocks are so far apart that you'd need a telescope to do that!  There are also scenes of the front door to Maxxie's flat, which clearly shows the front door is located off an outside walkway and it looks as though it is only a few storeys high, however the flats in the main tower don't have outside walkways, only the flats in the smaller block do!

The low-level paved area has garages underneath which is a great excuse for 'recycling' the garage doors from my old 'garage block' BAT!

More from this tomorrow or I might start work on the Park Hill flats although it won't be the whole of the estate as it is massive (the largest listed building in Europe according to the BBC documentary about the flats last week).  I think I'll just do one block and see how it looks.

Park Hill is here at last:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg89.imageshack.us%2Fimg89%2F6071%2Fparkhill01.jpg&hash=9907a35ea5f4a515dc9d41365d633619ee5fa301)

This is in the very early stages, there's not currently any lifts or stairs as I need to add the towers for those.  I never realised the facade of this building was so complex, the window patterns seem to have no logic to them at all but I don't know what the layout of the flats is so there might be a reason.

I think I'll put some boarded up shops on the ground floor as that seems to be the case with the real thing.

PS: I don't like the angle of the left-hand wing so I will change it so it kind of reflects the angle of the RH wing.

Guess who's back, back again...hopefully for longer this time.

I'm back to BATting and have another large building on the go but I can't give you more info at the moment but it is a mixed office and light industrial building.

I have been involved in documenting the history of the building that I work in, taking photos of it and looking in the archives etc and the obvious outcome of this is a BAT project! This won't be released till after Christmas at the earliest but in the meantime, I will try and finish that BBC TV Centre, the problem with it previously has been rendering it but I have upgraded my computer since previously attempting to render it so will try again. It does need some minor work on the grounds surrounding the buildings and on some of the textures.

My ASDA seems very popular, so I will also try and get that finished. It just needs detailing and texturing really.

Hope this helps, I will try and actually finish something this time!

It's been an other *very* long time but I have just got back into BAT and promise to be more committed to it this time...I posted some pictures of my old BATs on Facebook a few weeks ago when I was sorting through some old files and the amount of interest made me realise that it really was something I should get back into and is a far more productive (and less expensive) pursuit than chasing after boys and beer...particularly the latter.

I have decided to make some changes. GMAX has served me well but I am becoming increasingly concerned that it is a proprietary and legacy format. The difficulty of extracting anything other than an SC4 render from GMAX is one of my main gripes and doing cool things like tinkering with interiors and lights and getting a decent render has prompted me to move to 3DS Max, once I get the BAT4Max tool working.

Where buildings are nearly finished in Gmax, I will leave them there but others that need major work I am rebuilding in 3DS. My ASDA is one example. There was a suggestion that it was too big (and, having undertaken some research on real supermarket sizes, this proved to be true). It has gone from 7x8 (roughly) to 5x6 roughly so can develop on standard C$$ lots.

I'm also working on various UK High Street shops still...these are my priority. While my original prototypes featured Woolworths, the new re-imagined ones will feature vital staples of the UK urban retail sector such as Primark and the 99p Store, as well as the only Wetherspoon's pub in the SC4 world. As pawnbrokers seem to be doing a roaring trade then they will be represented as well plus there will be the chance to bring the biggest shop in town to your retail areas - Primark.

Exciting times and I promise I won't run away again this time!

EDIT: please excuse me; in my excitement I mentioned Primark twice...and this is from a bloke who does proofreading for a living!!!

Title: Re: GaryReggae's BAT Exhibition
Post by: GaryReggae on February 17, 2012, 04:53:08 AM
OK...thanks folks...well I am surprised at the amount of interest in my BATs - I thought that just throwing up a few postwar shops/factories etc would have got as much interest as the real things but this is good news.

The other good news is that I am restricting the number of projects I will work on at one time as otherwise I never get anything finished...story of my life really.

I've been taking an interest in the postwar architecture of Southampton, my home city and this has inspired much of my work but I realised the other day just how many factories have closed in the last decade or so and think this is very sad. This will lead to some industrial BATS, for example, something I've been tinkering with for over ten years...

...the Map Works/Print Works complex, where I used to work. I haven't been able to do much with that while it was operational but its days are well and truly numbered unfortunately and the only good thing to come of that is that I can publish the BAT. A large workshops/garage block (roughly 75 m by 40 m by 6 m high real-world size) has already been demolished and I think this would make a great standalone BAT, as it could fit into any light manufacturing/warehouse/motor repairs and so on area. It could even fit in as a building housing several I-M or possibly I-H businesses as it has several sets of concertina doors (like an industrial estate building). If there is interest then I'll post some pix later.

Now, the other reason for my post is that I have a few old BATs that need something doing with them. Not the really old ones, these ones are what I call my Mark II BATs, while my 2012 ones are Mark III. I have two corner blocks of 2x2 W2W low density UK High Street shops (previously referred to as UK High Street 1) and a Debenhams Department Store (the Mark II version, not ye olde version that was on Simtropolis). I rendered these about six years or so ago but I think they need running through the mill that is the Plugin Manager and then putting into the Lot Editor...I can have a go at doing that but I am sure somebody else could probably do a much better job, so any offers of help would be much appreciated thanks...sorry if it seems I am trying to go the wrong way about this but I'm devoting all my efforts into BAT at the moment and learning about the Lot Editor and all the metadata for the Plugin Manager again seems like too much effort...like learning how to BAT in Blender (another very worthy but very frustrating activity) is not the top of my priority list. Also, I admit that, much as I love it, I'm not really playing SC4 at the moment and trying to get the right conditions to get these to develop in-game so I can take in-game screenshots is a pain! I am lazy but trying to keep my mind off RL issues by designing BATs is a good thing so anything that keeps me motivated is good.

Thanks again,

Gary

Gary, It is a pleasure to see that you haven't stopped the BAT and I hope this time you get to complete many of your fabulous projects. Few people aren't interested in the postwar English's architecture and I think it's a great things to see that people like you try to save them with the 3D.
The architecture for cities like plymouth or southampton are really interesting ( like the old drake circus, one of a really fabulous Brutalism's Malls I ever see), as the industrial architecture. In endangered, because considered by many people as ugly and dirty (the problem of the concrete) whereas they have some beauty. I think it is one of the reason whose explain that many people are interested in what you do. (and also because you are a great batter)
I also read that you're looking for people lotting and modding yours Mark II Bats (and possibly your futur bats) and I propose to look into it if you agree. If you want to see my work, you can go on my topic in the TSC team section (I have relotted your Debenhams Departement store and your really old version of Brynmawr rubber factory ;))
To conclude, I hope to see more news and perhaps some pictures of your futur bats.

Thanks Vivien.

Postwar buildings, particularly those in (as you said) cities like Southampton, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Coventry and Bristol (to name but a few) where WII led to the loss of many older buildings, are a part of the urban landscape in most town and city centres...I guess that's why they're popular. While my BATs are arguably of less architectural merit than older buildings and 'ugly' to a lot of people, buildings from this era still have a story to tell and as a lot of these buildings were only intended to be temporary, they're doing rather well to still be around now.

Anyway, thanks for your offer of sorting out my old BATs; I'll send you the files later. It seems that I have created a Lot for the three I'm thinking of but the plugin manager side of things probably needs a lot of work. It's been a long time since I did anything with that.

In the meantime, I'd like to introduce you all to 'Services Block'. When I fist started BATting, this would be considered finished but there's an awful lot more still to do, mainly revolving around textures and roof junk.

You're right, no matter the age or the beauty of the Building, they all have something to say and show.
