Title: BSC Prop Family Index
Post by: BarbyW on September 26, 2007, 07:55:41 AM
For some time now there has been an index kept of prop family IIDs in the same way that there is for texture IIDs. It has previously been kep at Simtropolis but I am now bringing the request thread here too.
If you make props or buildings that you want to place in families please request a range of IIDs so that you do not conflict with anyone else.

Barby;

I have pretty much exhausted my first IID range (the LA RIver Project is going to be hugh when it is all finished) and would like a new set please (I am working on 3 other modular sets).
Title: Re: BSC Prop Family Index
Post by: BarbyW on January 22, 2008, 09:47:02 AM
Wow you have used 255 families? Are you sure you have that right before I allocate any more IIDs?
Title: Re: BSC Prop Family Index
Post by: RebaLynnTS on January 22, 2008, 10:06:30 AM
I have not published them all, yet, but yes, I have alocated 216 for the LA River Project.

(I could post the list if you like).

Anyone using all the variations will overload their plugins. lol.

If I am right, I will end up needing something like 900, but that will be a long time coming.

Rebecca, that means you will have many, many more pieces than 900 to make families with. Are you sure you are using this correctly?

Barby ... I am very sure ... Just the 6 versions of the River set (Dirty Wet, Dirty Dry, Dirty Full, Clean Wet, Clean Dry, Clean Full) will require 308 prop families, each with 7 models for variation, for a total of over 2100 models. Then there is the Ditch and Stream sets I one day hope to make. The vast majority will be texture variations only, so modeling them won't be too hard. I may decide to do the clean versions with just single models, cutting back the number of families I'll need by half.

It's a good thing I can't work, or I'd never have time for all this :)

Barby, I have a question:

I'm going to make some ploppable vehicles and other props using the "Plopperizer" method described by David (exactly as you did with tractors and military vehicles I guess  :)). Props in the set don't form a family, but a chain. Anyway it is a group of props. Should I use my new BSC Prop Family Index  range to assign IID numbers to these props?

No, Adam, don't use those. Make yourself a set of IIDs like David did or like I did. I used BAB5 to start mine - the closest I could get to Barby $%Grinno$% You could use ADA to start yours.

I was wondering if I could have a specific range like 77500000 to 775001ff for my personal use, as that is all I would ever need. Is the range taken?

I do have a question about parent cohorts for naming them for viewing in LE. I have read the tutorial here on making prop families and it says adding 1 to the first number for the cohort, like for a prop family 77500000 would have a cohort of 87500000. Does this effect the families number range, or wouldn't effect existing cohorts if the number happens to be the same, which is unlikely. I don't really know how or where to find the list of cohorts for prop familys/props in the maxis ones, plus is a cohort for a prop different from a family cohort? I guess I am just asking why the Cohort is done like that, adding 1 to the left most number?
Title: Re: BSC Prop Family Index
Post by: BarbyW on May 19, 2009, 12:11:30 AM
I have noted your range request and logged it for you.
Regarding the cohort files, that is an optional step but as all families are allocated there should be no overlap of numbering. The +1 for the cohort file has no effect on the family itself other than to show a name when you are working in LE. There is a file on the LEX - BSC Mod Prop Family Names (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1562) - that has cohort files for the Maxis families. This is very useful for lot makers.
As for why the Cohort is made by adding 1 to the family IID I have no idea as that is how Maxis did it.

Thank you very much...

I guess that makes sense, kinda' like following in the footsteps of the creators for certain things. I figured that all it was to show the ID in LE, as that is what the Tutorial by Jeronij basically said... All the tut explain is how to make one and not much detail on what it is.. What you say makes sense. Thanks again for the info and your help...

Rady: you only need a prop family range if you are making or modding props to be put into families. A range is not needed for lot making on its own.

But isn't it that the LOTs do need an ID, too? If not, how can we ensure a LOT has a unique name? As far as I understood so far, I'm opening an existing LOT in the LE and save it under a new name (done that already). For example I created a LOT named "RY_PZ_1x1_Cobblestone", how can this be identified in a unique way by the game? How can I be sure nobody else uses the same name by pure accident? ()what() ()what() ()what()

Sorry for these beginners questions, but I havent found a comprehensive "beginners guide" so far (neither here nor over at simtropolis).

LotEditor automatically generates a unique Instance ID, which will be based on the time you create it. ;)
The chance to create a lot with a conflicting TGI is minimal... so far I've not heard of two lots that would have been created on the same second...

I would like to request a range, too, please.

It has been mentioned that it's a good idea to keep track of the range numbers we have already used so as not to accidently repeat or overwrite previously files.  Anyone have suggestions as to an effecient way to do this?  I am a big fan of Excel for list making, would this work?  Also, is there a way to keep the files in my own range easily findable?  I'm really big on keeping things organized and so I am wondering if it's a good idea to create a seperate folder (say on my desktop) to keep my range file creations in while working on them and before trying to import them into the game.

Thanks in advance!

BarbyW-

QuoteI keep a record in a notebook after losing the original list I had in a computer crash. I have an Excel SS too but prefer the pen and paper version.

Can you give me some idea of how you organize your lists/notes for your personal IID's?  I am giving thought to attempting to list all the possible hex combination variations within my assigned range, then checking them off when used and adding notes as to what they were used for.  Is this realistic, do you think?

Also...do the prop family IID's have pre-determined in-game values for certain digits located in specific locations in the 8 digit sequence, in a manner similar to how the hex values work for textures?  If so, where would I find information explaining this?  And if not, then am I safe to assume that I can basically use any combination of hex values within my range for the last 5 digits in the sequence?

Lastly, and this may be a stupid question, but is there a tutorial anywhere that might help a newbie such as myself sort out all the lingo involved with creating custom content or that would maybe break down the manner in which one might get started.  Some specific questions I have are things like: Are textures considered to be props?  If so, how are texture families different than prop families?  Are all props created in the BAT?

Is there anywhere I can go to learn and understand how a single cell in the game is configured to display?  There is so much to learn, I am a bit overwhelmed in regards to where to start.  Any help would be appreciated.

Lora/LD

With regard to kepping a list, I just keep a list of what prop family IIDs I have used. For example - 0xBC000049 - SNM Tanks. There is no wealth indicator as with the Texture Index.
I recommend reading Guide to the creation of custom content for sharing with the community (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=307.0) There are links within that to other useful threads on SC4D. There is also a printable version in Word.doc format attahced to the first post.
Another useful tutorial is Creating your own prop families(extended version) (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=211.msg280594;topicseen#msg280594) which will tell you how to use the prop family IIDs.

Textures are not props and you should read the appropriate pinned post in the Texture Index thread. They are, however, lot objects and count towards to final total of objects allowed on a lot. Texture families exist for the different wealth levels only whereas prop families are objects placed on a lot - like trees - so that the prop varies depending on the one selected by the game.
All props are made in BAT in the same way that buildings are made.

I would advise a lot of reading before starting anything.

BarbyW-

Not only a lot of reading, but a lot of question-asking, too, which I am doing!  I have no plans to start creating anything at all until I feel I have a firm grasp on how things work...acquiring my IID ranges for Prop Familys and Textures is just the first step towards getting my ducks all in a row, don't worry.

And thank you for the links to tutorials, I will use them and post further questions there as they arise.

Lora/LD, thankful folks are patient with newbies around here

Hi BarbyW.   I'm following along with the PIM-X user guide and now I'd like to request a family range.   I'd also like one clarification please.   When making a building family with 5 different models and I'm asked to enter the family ID.  Do I enter in the same number for all five, for example 0xXXXXXX00.  Or does each model get its own. 0xXXXXXX00 for the first and 0xXXXXXX01 for the second and so forth.

If you want them to be in the same family
(so that any of those five buildings can grow on the same lot),
then you need to give all five the same family ID. ;)

Otherwise they would be in five different families... ::)

Apologies for the delay in replying to these requests. RL has been not good for a few months and I have neglected this thread.

That's only applicable to textures created in SC4Tool (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=2101.0). ;)
For prop families, read Barby's SC4PIM User Guide (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2257).

I think badsim needs this ID range to make his models into standard props so thay can be used in LE as families of props ( a very good solution to give much variety to a single lot  ), so he'll probably also need an excel sheet to keep track of all these ID's ranges for so many different things... a hard life a modder's life...   ::)  ;)

I'd like to request a range of family IDs for my new seine river banks, for which I am currently making props.

I hope this is available.

Thanks,

0x5f85b800 to 0x5f85b8ff

You should probably either wait till a range is assigned to you or at least take into account how many people are in line before you start using the next available range.  By that rational that range belongs to Dobdriver mate.

Hello,

I'm making progress with my project (the paris seine river banks). Continuing my temp range from now will take too much changes. So I'm going to use a range in hoping that I don't have to change afterwards. Given the number of people who have requested ranges before me I extrapolate:

0x5f85b500 to 0x5f85b5ff   Iphy22
0x5f85b600 to 0x5f85b6ff   Kergelen
0x5f85b700 to 0x5f85b7ff   Happy Days
The above mentioned ranges have been registered officially

0x5f85b800 to 0x5f85b8ff ?? dobdriver first in line request
0x5f85b900 to 0x5f85b9ff ?? shokthrpy second in line
0x5f85bA00 to 0x5f85bAff ?? murimk
0x5f85bB00 to 0x5f85bBff ?? xannepan

I hope this is okay with everyone... and that these ranges are free off course.

Sounds like a plan, I can't delay this any longer. I'll claim mine and I spoke to Murimk and he'll take his as well.  So following suit, I and Murimk will lay claim to the follwing ranges:

shokthrpy - 0x5f85b900 to 0x5f85b9ff
Murimk - 0x5f85bA00 to 0x5f85bAff

Edit:
I have used the range 0x5484c100 through 0x5484c1ff for my last upload to the STEX, if I counted correct that would be the range in line to be assigned to me as Motokloss would get the 0x5f85bf00->0x5f85bfff, and tonygunlover would get 0x5f85c000->0x5f85c0ff. RippleJet and BarbyW kept a spread sheet between them. They are the only ones who know what numbers or ranges are assigned to whom. They are the ones who can assign new ranges safely and without duplication. Neither of them are active at the moment. You, and others, may have to pummel their email boxes with requests before they decide to share the spread sheet with another responsible/active SC4 Devotion admin or member.

As I find myself in need of a family for private use as well, I've decided to do just that, assigning a family of 0xff to every request since the last update we arrive at:

0x5f85bf00 - 0x5f85bfff Motokloss
0x5f85c000 - 0x5f85c0ff tonygunlover
0x5484c100 - 0x5484c1ff antn

0x5484c500 - 0x5484c5ff DaveN
0x5484c600 - 0x5484c6ff Framly

0x5484ca00 - 0x5484caff Aaron Graham

Good News!! I now have the official list that is used to assign prop families. The ranges assigned by Reblet are OK. They can be considered safe to use.

Would it be a problem if the list was visibly available (like: as in a locked topic) to everyone? In that case only certain staff members would be able to edit the list, but everyone could see it. As long as this site (and Simtropolis at the same time, I guess) exist, the list will be avaliable.
This isn't done yet, so I guess there are negative sides on this option? Please tell me? maybe we can encounter them?

I think our biggest concern with that idea is that people would come along take a look at the list and go off and start using a range or ranges without telling anyone they have done so, and we would then issue a range to someone not realizing that someone else has started using that same range.

Yes, that is certainly a danger. I can see that.
On the other hand: the problem exists already now. By people ignoring the list altogether.
So it's a matter of self-control anyway.

Lee, you already have a range but until I get home next Fri I can't tell you what has been used - if any. Your range is 0xCA100000 to 0xCA1FFFFF. I think you will be fairly safe if you work backwards from the last IID.

So it has been some years since I made a prop family and now I am not sure if I remember my range correctly. I think it is A0005501 - A00055ff. I know that the numbers 55 are correct because David suggested it to mimic my letters SS (wonder why I remember that so clearly after all these years  &Thk/( ). If someone could verify this for me I would be very happy.

Hi Barby!!! How are you? You've guessed it, I am also toying around with SC4PIM and monkeying around with relotting some residentials like adding slope values so I can use these in my hillside town of Peyton Place-Stepford Island (it is a Duo-Mayoral Seated Metrop Collaboration).  I am also adding slope to 'some' 2x2 and smaller commericals so they will fit into some slightly hilly business-lined throughways.

Can I gave my very own Peyton Place-Stepford Family Range?  And I am going to look online to see if I can find an article that defines the code values in the slope settings and such.  I also need to get some help on LEProp.  When I add automations from the available list, none of these activate in the game when plopping a "Peyton Place-Stepford Real Estate Prop"

Hi Guys and Sim.Rico (perhaps less smilies the next time)

I realize this is extremely frustrating and I haven't forgotten you or this topic and am trying to get a solution to it.

If we have to come up with a new index then that's what we will do, I have been thru both this topic and the original one at Simtropolis so I have a fair idea of the ranges that have already been issued, but I'm hoping to get the BSC Prop Family Index back and working again as that is my preference as I don't really want to re-invent the wheel.

Still trying to come up with a more permanent solution for the Index, but I have created a new spreadsheet based on the ranges already issued here and Simtropolis and am confident enough to issue the following ranges

0x5f85dd00   0x5f85ddff      dirtguru
0x5f85de00   0x5f85deff      Sim.Rico
0x5f85df00   0x5f85dfff      Bipin

Hi nos.17

Your range is

0x5f85e100 - 0x5f85e1ff

And just to let everyone know what's going on, currently having discussions on getting something that's more high-tech and doesn't need someone to manually issue a range from a Excel Spreadsheet, but in the meantime myself and Jmouse will be issuing the ranges between us, we just have to sort out a shared location for the Index.

Ok, I want to make sure I get how this numbering system works. My range is 0x5f85e100 - 0x5f85e1ff.

So I would use ...e100 to ...e109. After that, I am pretty sure ...e10a comes next. Then I would use ...e10a to ...e10f and then on to ...e110. Is what I am doing correct?

Isn't it possible to put the list in some or other hidden-to-the-normal-users Administrator's thread on this site? So that only the appropriate people can see and edit it? Then it is available to the community if needed. That way it is not depending on only one or two persons.
Title: Re: BSC Prop Family Index
Post by: catty on May 16, 2014, 12:36:35 PM

Hi FrankU

The shared location was simply so we didn't accidentally issue the same ranges to different people, but there was also no way I was going to have the range list disappear again so a read-only version has been set up on a wordpress webpage and all admin and global moderators have access to that webpage ... plus the webpage has also got a number of un-issued ranges on it, so anyone who can access the webpage can issue a range from it as long as they let either myself or Jmouse know what they have done.

... still have to set up the shared location, but that got put on hold when my hosting company deleted my website when they were trying to delete some directories they had accidentally added to it ... its back but it does have some problems which need to be sorted out.

Can I ask if there is a problem with whoever is in charge of the Texture ID's? I'm sitting on some stuff I can't ship until I get a range for those, I wouldn't bother you so soon after asking, but I note the thread requesting them has not had a response since early May, so I was just hoping someone could advise if there is some problem with these?

Do you want another range in the addition to the one you already have?

...Isn't it possible to put the list in some or other hidden-to-the-normal-users Administrator's thread on this site? So that only the appropriate people can see and edit it? Then it is available to the community if needed. That way it is not depending on only one or two persons.

Hi FrankU

I know its been a while since I said that I would set up a shared location for the Index, things just kept happening, but I've finally got around to creating a shared location

http://city-builders.info/cb-groups/item/30-prop-family-index

I've still got to add the Index plus a couple of other documents to it, and I'm only going to granting access to the people who already know where the wordpress version of the Index is, which is currently all admin and global moderators from this site plus a couple of other people from here and they will be given access if they ever set up accounts on the site.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but all other requests to access the Index will be rejected.

Hi Guys

Despite my resignation from the SC4D staff having now taken effect, I will continue to manage and issue Prop Family requests when requested for the foreseeable future, if I don't immediately respond to your request feel free to send me an PM, please remember I do have a real life and live in New Zealand so please check the time in New Zealand before assuming the worse and start sending me PMs.

-catty

EDIT: If request is urgent or you cannot contact me via this site, then you can reach me over at www.city-builders.info (http://www.city-builders.info) either by PM if you have an account, or using the Contact Form (bottom of webpage).

Merry Christmas everyone  and best wishes for the new year    ()flower()

If anyone needs a Prop Family range can you post before Christmas Eve, after that real life takes over for a few days     if and to be honest I can't ever see a prop family request being so urgent it can't wait a couple of days, but if anyone feels they really need one, you will be able to reach me at the CB Christmas party.

Now on to range request business

Issued To: He Who Will Not Be Named aka ProjectSaultSteMarie2014
Range: 0x5F85CC00 thru to 0x5F85CCFF

Sorry a PS: I haven't forgotten about updating the wordpress site for those people that have links to it, but real life is calling so will do it a bit later.

Hi nathkel

You can have this range do not expand past it, as the FAFA range has been taken by someone else.

I have been very conscience of the fact since SimPeg demise that if something were to happen either to me or the CB website that the Prop Family Index could disappear as well, the Prop Family Index has been on a private group over at CB, I have now made it an closed group that anyone who belongs to the CB Website can view or join (joining is limited to people I know and who haven't been banned on other sites).

Hi guys

The prop family index was set up all those years ago to make sure that we didn't get conflicts happening because people had used the same numbers so its important to ask for a range if you need one and equally important when you know its a big project to make sure you have enough to cover your project and you don't continue to create prop families using unassigned ranges.

Anyway moving on a PM has been sent to francis90b giving him a list of ranges to choose from and in addition to this range

A little trick could that I uses in Excel is the HEX2DEC and DEC2HEX.

You range in normal decimal number starts at 1602611712 and ends at 1602611967.

I use the HEX2DEC and DEC2HEX in EXCEL and a script that generates the ranges between two numbers, otherwise I'd probably still be doing the list for maloskero, but it still meant the time I'd allotting to working on Paeng's forum attachments last night got taken up by prop family stuff instead.

You will have to ask for a texture range again in the texture range topic as this isn't something I have access to, as for your prop family range am quite busy so haven't had a chance to issue you one yet, its now  here

I see how important this is after having several lots very confused about props, for example the BSC 1x1 playground, which displays industrial props instead of playground toys!

Been working on turning automata into props.

Been using and plan to use the range: FFA10000-FFFF9999.
I know its a big range, but as there is a lot of modding in these packages I need a system to get it working.

By my calculations that's a seriously high number of IDs you are asking for (millions), are you really going to need that many? Even with a large number of items to make, surely one hundred families would be plenty, no?
Title: Re: BSC Prop Family Index

No using it all the way through.
I have a model that is rotated in 12 angles.
These angles I have add to to the TGIs. For the GEvo I used the following IDs:

After looking it over I plan to use the following for the EMD E9
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FP6v8MjM.jpg&hash=e35e57604b6efbb2d09b9c10f8293e3f8b6f7976)
Moved the angle one digit to the left and moved the Prop serie number from the 4th digit to the last digit, compared to the GEvo engines.

So my range can be spilt up into small ranges with first range being:
ffa1000-ffa7875f (reserving for two extra set of props: last digit: 6-a; b-f)

After that I plan to use the following ranges:
ffb10000-ffb7875f
ffc10000-ffc7875f
ffd10000-ffd7875f.

That is going to cover 9x5x12=540 props.

Well I'm not in charge of dishing out the ranges. But logically I think you may have to revise your plans. The only way to manage a database of IDs is by giving out ranges that are in numercial sequence. In the case of Hexidecimal, that means the last digit should increment from 0-F (16 IDs), then you increment the next digit to the left. This way your 540 props can be neatly confined within a range like so XXXX X000 - XXXX X2FF. Note a range with all the last three digits availible produces over 4,000 unique IDs.

On the other hand, if this is for S3D props (3D Models), I wasn't aware they used the same ID system as Prop Families? Are you making families for these props? In which case, you shouldn't need all 540 IDs, just one for each group. Assuming that was one for each angle, that would be only 12 IDs. But if you just want to reserve IDs for the models, I'm not sure there is any official registry of IDs for those.

Perhaps you may have to use some ID's ad-hoc and hope they don't conflict with others. Frankly, there isn't a ton of 3D-Model stuff out there on the exchanges. Statistically speaking, you are very unlikely to run into an ID conflict.

Maybe you could have a look at the VDK Proppack 3 - GEvo Engines (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=3472).
As far as I see it I have one prop for each 3d model and a family for each angle.
That gives 60 props and 12 families.

EDIT: Figure out if I change the coding for the angles from four digit to one digit.
The 3th last digit would represent the angle going from 1 to c.

That will make my range: ffa10000-ffa10cff.

Beside that earlier mention ranges use for the GEvo engines:
ffa10000-ffa17875
ffa20000-ffa27875
ffa30000-ffa37875
ffa40000-ffa47875
ffa50000-ffa57875

Sorry Arne, I've been totally side-swiped between computer issues and other tasks. I should have gotten back to you sooner.

Firstly I should point out that Catty is no longer maintaining the Prop Family ID ranges, so we'll need to find a solution for that. I will see about taking over responsibility for it, Catty has passed on the master list, which I intend to move to an online host where all can VIEW it at least.

I've looked at the file you mentioned in your last post. Note, I'm only interested in the Prop Families. Props themselves should use random IDs, if you wish to manually assign them, that's your business. But there is no need for an assigned range. Using non random numbers, will increase the odds of your props conflicting with other objects though.

In this file you've used 12 Cohort files, which is 12 Prop families, which need simply 12 unique IDs. I know you are trying to keep a system for these prop IDs, but I don't understand why? In any case, here are the ID's you've used:

Family: FFA0
-0000
-1125
-1834
-2250
-2656
-3369
-4500
-5631
-6344
-6750
-7157
-7875

What I think you fail to understand is that you've just basically used up around 30,000 IDs for just 12 families. I'm sorry, but this cannot simply continue, you need to change how you are working. Assuming you have the range FFA0, here are the 12 ID's you should have used, in order:

0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, 0004, 0005, 0006, 0007, 0008, 0009, 000A, 000B.

See the difference? You might think those IDs would conflict with your props, but they won't. Because all prop families are unique from prop exemplars. But because they don't have either a Type or Group ID (the cohort might, but the families do not), there is not an infinite supply of IDs.

I can clearly see that you are trying to bring some organisation and patterns to your numbering scheme. But, it's ridiculously inefficient when you look at how the game/hex numbering works.

Here's another example of that... open calculator in Windows, set it to Programmer mode from the View menu. Select Hex in the left side. Then enter your second used ID from the GeVo Prop Pack:

FFA01125 Then we take that (minus) from the first ID FFA00000, click Dec to convert the result back to Decimal.

This gives us 4,389. What does this mean? It means that your IDs, which should be used sequentially, are actually in some cases up to 4,500 numbers apart. So in decimal you've used the IDs:

0
4389
6196
8784
9814
13161
17664
22065
25412
26448
29015
30837

When all you really needed to use was 1 - 12.

(note: for the sake of an example. I'm just showing counting from Hex 00000000 upwards (numbers shown are decimal order), otherwise it would only confuse the issue.

Now imagine we (the guardians) had to maintain a list of 4.3 billion IDs in a spreadsheet? It can't be done. So we give a range to everyone, usually with between 4k and 65k IDs. If you stray out of this range, others peoples stuff will conflict with yours. This problem isn't simply solved by giving you more IDs. It must be solved by refusing you more. Because if everyone wanted to pick and choose the individual IDs they used, we'd have run out of them years ago. Or simply had such an unmanageable system that by now it would be chaos. We are happy to try and explain this, to help you understand the problem. But there really is no solution that involves allowing users to be so wasteful that can be considered.

It might be helpful, but I'm in the middle of writing up a guide to using Hex IDs, it's still a WIP (http://community.simtropolis.com/omnibus/simcity-4/modding-information/what-is-hex-numbers-dont-hurt-me-r293/), but hopefully that will help illuminate the issues here. Assuming that is you still have questions?

Respectfully,

Robin.

I haven't overlooked anything, I assure you. The system is what it is, we must work with it.

You have an assigned range I assume? So long as you keep to the IDs from that, you can use them however you like. But, if you want more IDs, that isn't going to happen unless you have used the ones given to you.

If you don't already have an assigned range, I am happy to provide you with one. But that will be a small range based on a family, you must use the IDs that are part of that allocation, not just the IDs you think make most sense.

In both cases, that means rather than IDing your items based on a system that works for you. That system must also take into consideration using the IDs given to you, in such a way that you make use of them all. If you have 65,000 IDs and can demonstrate you've used them, i.e. 65,000 released prop families, then you can apply for another range. If you can demonstrate that you need more than one range, because of the number of families you are creating, you can have more than one range too. But, if you've used a fraction of those IDs or simply used them for things other than Prop Families, then you can not. Similarly if you want to have more IDs because you will use them inefficiently, that's not happening either.

I'm sorry, but I'm having this conversation all too frequently these days. If you are going to be inflexible in your demands, you can expect an inflexible response. Because I've tried my best to explain a very technical thing as simply as possible. I spent hours doing this trying to keep it easy to follow. If you don't understand why you have to work differently, I'm sorry. You cannot take an assigned range of 65k IDs, use 60 of them and ask for 65k more. We also can not give out individual IDs, because that's impossible to keep track of.

Let me re-iterate. You are numbering objects, think of that as a list. Instead of using a system where 1 is the first item, then 2, 3, 4 and so on. You want to utilise the numbers 1, 4389, 6196, 8784, 9814 and so on... This is totally illogical, even if I can see why you might think it is better, trust me, it's not.

It would only be more work if you've gone ahead and ID'd your content before a range was allocated to you. Which is kind of like booking a holiday and being mad that there is no flight available, having turned up at the airport without a ticket to fly.

To be absolutely clear. I respect you and your work greatly. The last thing I want to do is annoy you or prevent you from being able to continue the great work that you do. But you are missing a very important point about how IDs, ranges and their allocations work. Simply throwing out IDs to appease people is not a solution, they are limited and must be used sparingly to ensure we don't end up running out of them entirely.

Before I give any range out, I just wanted to explain a new thing I'll be doing as I take over management of the Prop Family Ranges.

From here on out, when I issue one, I'll be attaching a .txt file (zipped) to the post. This will include a complete list of all your allocated IDs. That way, rather than having to work out which IDs to use and all that Hex malarkey, you can just tick them off from a list made for you. I hope this will prove beneficial for some users. Here's an example of the contents of the file:

0xXF85F40x
==========
   XF85F400
   XF85F401
   XF85F402
   XF85F403
   XF85F404
   XF85F405
   XF85F406
   XF85F407
   XF85F408
   XF85F409
   XF85F40A
   XF85F40B
   XF85F40C
   XF85F40D
   XF85F40E
   XF85F40F

The top line represents an ID grouping or family. Then the 16 IDs for that family are listed thereafter. My advice would be to add an X or other marker on the left, after using an ID, then saving the file as a reference. You can also add a description if you like too, to keep everything in alignment, I'd do that on the right side, for example:

X   XF85F400 - Llamas on Fire

Of course you can use it any way you like, or not at all, it's just intended to make things easier if you want it. In order to avoid such attached files from remaining on the server forever, I will keep these attachments live for a minimum of one calendar month before removing them. Unless you confirm you've got the file beforehand.

Looking at your previous post in this thread, can I ask what you plan to use the Prop Family for? Families are a very specific thing which required dedicated IDs. Regular props and models do not need dedicated IDs and should not be confused with Families. If this is what you are making, you should use a random ID, which the Reader is happy to generate. The odds of such a random number conflicting with existing content are lower than winning the lottery.

I am wanting to make a prop from this SHK pack: http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/27563-shk-parking-pack/ (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/27563-shk-parking-pack/)
that performs 2 things differently from the 4x CarCluster prop family I am currently using from the above pack:

1: I want it to perform like the Maxis prop family I was using previously (this time a 5x car prop family) in that there could be anywhere from 1-5 cars on the lot whereas with the SHK one there is only ever a full lot (4 cars).

2: I don't want there to be luxury cars like BMW's on the lots as I am creating a low wealth pack and they just don't look right.

This has mostly been discussed here: http://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/34247-thingfishs-bats/?page=3 (http://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/34247-thingfishs-bats/?page=3)

Hi Krasner,

A little look back through this thread and you'll see that we don't give out individual IDs, the reason being that keeping track of them would be an administrative nightmare that way.

If you really just need to make two families and don't see yourself using families much, I'm happy to pass on a couple IDs from my range, just send me a PM if you want them. Otherwise, I'm happy to give you a full range of IDs for future use if you prefer, just reply here and I'll allocate a range to you.

I would like to get an ID range to make my own Prop Families. I am told to ask here.

So how do we go about this ? Like : "please, please, pretty please ?" :)

Honestly I've absolutely no idea why a bunch of people think it's worthwhile to download the ID ranges assigned to others. But, a quick look back and you'll see this happens to every one I post?!?

I would suggest that there is no bad intent here (although the possibility does exist), but rather various people download the complete listing for the purpose of research / troubleshooting (I have considered doing this myself).

While the issue is much less prevalent today, with some of the earlier downloads, some custom content creators for a number of reasons failed to provide an accurate list of needed dependencies for their creations.  If one has created a "database" of the ID ranges given out and who those ranges belong to, one has a tool to help at least narrow down where to look for what's missing.  However, this is somewhat more difficult if one only has the range itself and not the individual IDs within those ranges.  However, since mgb204 started providing a complete listing of available IDs for each range, the search has become much simpler (if one has his own copy of the "database") as one only needs to insert a Family ID in a search box, and hit search to find who that ID belongs to.

I guess some people figure it's easier/quicker for them to use a search capability they have compiled for their own use (apparently not taking into consideration the time and effort involved in keeping their own "database" up to date), rather than query the keeper of the master "database" about the owner of a particular Family ID, no matter how quickly he is able to respond (maybe this is part of an "I want an answer right this second!" mentality).  To each his own, I guess!

Nope, you have been assigned the range, if someone else uses your IDs, you have the right to force them to change them. The whole point of ID reservation is to prevent such conflicts, it would be frowned upon if others used your IDs.

Well, I'm certainly not going to go on the ID Police patrol. I'll just use my ID range and we'll see down the line if there are any problems.

While I have you here :-), a question : I must ask author's permission to use their props. What if they've left the game and are impossible to contact ? (I'm thinking of those whose props I use more often, like D66 or MJB, or SG...)

You are free to re-use and modify Prop Exemplars as you wish. Provided you don't redistribute the actual models themselves, but instead link to them as dependencies.

Hi!

I'm probably at the wrong place with this, but I didn't want it to be forgotten or overlapped. Could any of you tell me (maybe who has the given prop family range list), that the following prop families are belonging to whoms range?
0x6cc41000
0x6cc41001
0x6cc41004

They showed up as missing dependencies on Aldara6166 - Intermodal Shipping Depot by RJM Designs (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/14289-intermodal-shipping-depot-by-rjm-designs/) lot, and giving those numbers are way too organized I assume they belong to prop families. This lot is old, it was made at the end of 2005.

Thanks in advance!

Such a weird range as it does not start with a 5. If you go by the old index at simtrop - https://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/13510-bsc-prop-family-index/ ... its likely that one was never indexed and/or the user picked it out of thin air.. which is always possible too when a file is that old.

Such a weird range as it does not start with a 5.

These look like Cohort file IIDs, which are made by adding 1 to the first character of the prop family IID. So the prop families would be 0x5cc41000, 0x5cc41001 and 0x5cc41004 if this is what's going on. And the error would relate simply to missing cohort files (containing prop family names to show in Lot Editor).

Please note, due to the insane number of people downloading the Prop Family attachments, I will no longer be making them publicly available. You might argue there are legitimate reasons for 200+ members to download such a listing, but that's poppycock! If you just wanted to know the range, all that information is provided in the two line response. I don't know what people are doing with them, but I am going to put a stop to it.

Instead from now on, I'll be sending a separate PM to those applying for ranges, with a non-public link to said file on Google Drive. So thanks to all those people for the extra work, when all I was trying to do, was to provide something that made understanding the ID allocation easier.

Nothing under Nate either, although I do have a range for "Dita" as Catty mentions.

Honestly, if you can't be really sure and want to go releasing Prop Families into the wild, I think the best solution might be to give you a new range. So many ranges get allocated, but no content ever gets released using them in many cases. So if we take our "best guess", it just increases the odds of unintended conflicts.

P.s. Thanks Catty for sending the file, but unless my memory is playing tricks, my source file when I took over allocating ranges was passed from yourself to me. Therefore, it's most likely identical, with the exception of my additions.

Hi there,

I'd like to request a family ID range.

Also, I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on an issue I'm having with some improvised prop families (personal use). I've assigned a number of props to families using the following naming convention: "B700XXXX." The first few families work fine (e.g., "B7000001", "B7000002", etc.), but a number of other families don't work at all. The props appear fine in PIM-X, but they never appear in the actual game.

I can't figure out what's causing the issue, and I was wondering if I made a basic error with the ID ranges.

BartonThinks' Prop Family ID Range:
0x5F860100 --> 0x5F8601FF

If a specific Prop Family is not working, that can be incredibly frustrating to find the problem. You should carefully check that the data in the Prop Exemplars (and Parent Cohort for the family, where used), are all correctly formatted data.

I can't remember the specifics now, but I believe the Rep value for the Property Prop/Building Family has to be correct. So check if this is different for a working family and non-working one before going further.

If you get stuck, PM me a copy of your Prop Exemplars with Problems and I'll try to take a look into them for you.

Thanks a ton, MGB. For the moment, I've given up on the families that were not working and simply switched to lotting with individual props. I'm fairly sure that the prop exemplars themselves were not an issue, and I didn't use any Parent Cohorts.

My assumption was that one or two of the instance ID digits might be sensitive, similar to how certain digits in texture IDs indicate wealth or zoom level. I was changing the third and fourth instance ID digits to distinguish between different groups of prop families -- the families that worked had these digits as "00," whereas the families that did not work used digits such as "01," "07," "11," etc.

Now that I have a proper ID range, I'll try creating some new families to see if I'm still having problems. If I run into issues, I'll let you know.

Thanks again!

Bear in mind that for personal use only, it's not strictly necessary to use assigned IDs. If you intend to release any works then having one will prevent conflicts with other releases. But if you are only using any items you create yourself, worst case scenario you might need to re-ID any items that conflict with other installed content. If you would like a range for MMPs, you can apply for one here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=185.0).

There is no range assignment for individual prop models--they're treated just like buildings and the like.  The individual prop model TGI is usually assigned by the BAT Plugin upon export, and the prop exemplar is usually determined randomly/arbitrarily.
