Title: BuildingUp and Out: Building Up's Journal (Update: 3-12-2010)
Post by: BuildingUp on December 19, 2009, 04:00:37 PM
It's been awhile since my last update in my previous thread and I've just not been able to keep it updated. So I've decided to make a general picture journal with different views around my current, and new region. It's all still new, the fresh paint smell is still in the air. Right now the region is flat, just like you start out with if you choose to make a new region in SC4 and choose not to have water tiles. It's green, and it's unaltered. This will all change and hopefully will become something worth viewing. Anyways, I appreciate any viewers or commentators.

And Merry Christmas!

THE SMALL TOWN OF CHRISTMAS: UPDATE 1.1-1.2 (There isn't a 1.0, I am starting off with 1.1)

Speaking of Christmas, in this new region, a small town was founded. Named after the mayor's favorite holiday, Christmas harbors a small number of residents, but is slowly growing as the regions first town and first sign of life. Below, a regional view is visible.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi48.tinypic.com%2Fjh58g5.jpg&hash=600ee5640d69cbe98d0f0054fbc407b8533fb117)

As you can see, the overview of the town shows how small it is. But not all towns stay small, and Christmas continues to grow every day. As you can see below, a close up view of one of the portions of the town show how green and lively the town is.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi45.tinypic.com%2F2n9j7th.jpg&hash=d2346b1563167dad6a20668d7219e4dd5896a01d)

The next update will focus on other parts of the town, and explore it's growth from small town to town, and so on. Eventually I hope to introduce new cities and towns.

Thank you for viewing the first update!U

CHRISTMAS IN JULY: Update 1.3-1.4

The fire station can be seen here, along with some shops and a few homes.

The Mayor, Ferris Quantum, is the first mayor of this new city in this new land. A statue was dedicated to her near the Christmas High School.

I have to agree with Battlecat, great start.

About your pictures, please convert them to jpg.
By resaving two of your picture, the file sizes went down from:
a3l3zt (http://img526.imageshack.us/i/a3l3zt.jpg/) went down from 1.06 MB to 116 kb and
2is8s4n (http://img260.imageshack.us/i/2is8s4n.jpg/) went down 1.00 MB to 98 kb.
This is with the quality setting set to 70 %, using IrfanView (http://irfanview.com/).

With this settings set to 75 % the file sizes would be: 129 kb and 108 kb.
This is the setting I used most, as it is were there is a minimum quality loss.

I use this program as well to take screenshots directly to jpg.
(Pressing C to start the screen capture.)

Thank you for catching that Arne.  Have a karma point.  &apls  Robin

Just north of the town of Christmas, whose population was approaching 12,000, a smaller town named Vista Falls exists.

This update we explore the wealthier sector of this new region.

This is the whole size of Vista Falls so far.

Battlecat: Yeah, it's about time for some farther away shots. The region isn't really developed too much but it's still worth showing I think. Thanks for the comment! :)

Thanks again guys. I really appreciate the comments and support.

More to come.

Something pretty bad happened so it's time I say what, while trying to build my region I deleted both cities in the thought that I could simply import them into a new location. Unfortunately those cities are gone for good. So I'm stuck with a blank region. However, this isn't bad news, since it gives me a chance to have a fresher start. I'm not going to stop posting in this thread, so don't look for a new one. Thanks again for all the comments and thanks again for the support.

There is more to come. Soon. :)

I appreciate the support guys. Thank you again.

Time for a fresh start, something new. Something that still has that fresh muffin smell.

Mountainfall, a new island in a new region. (A default water region that will be terraformed over time) Current population: 0 Possibilities? Could be anything!

Though, one question.. who's setting off the fireworks?

I've always found the fireworks weird. But I guess the answer to that is whoever founded the city, assuming you aren't some almighty entity to alter reality :D. Sorry to hear about the old cities. But I've always found that a fresh start is a good thing. I accidentally wiped my computer once. But I had backups of my important files and I used the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7.

Battlecat: Thanks man, I appreciate the support and comment. :)

I've got a bit of a problem, this terrain I'm terraforming is very different from flat terrains that I usually build on, so I'm asking for help from all of you, where and how should I go about building a city on such terrain? I'd appreciate any feedback. More to come. :)

From the looks of it, Mountainfall seems like a place that isn't populated a lot. Try making trails leading to a few places, and a bunch of forest.

Starland looks more buildable in my opinion. I would only build large buildings in flatter areas. Maxis mansions ruin the look of mountain towns, so I would recommend getting the Maxis mansion blocker on the STEX.

Update: Since SC4M now works for me I'm going to change the region up a bit. I found a great region here on the LEX and I'm looking to develop it under the same name Avant Vista.

So, with that being said, here's a teaser. I haven't fully unpackaged the region yet so here's part of it. It's pretty large.

It is flatter than the one I created myself but it does have a lot of room to build on. The region is located here for better viewing since it's too big for me to take a picture of in game.

http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1347

And here's a picture from me;

An update is coming soon. The first city in this region is named after that island I created myself, Starland.

More to come. :)

Very nice start on your region there!   That's a nice looking little town already.  Good first attempt at a newspaper, specially considering the limitations of ms paint.

If you're going to do graphics work, gimp is a great option, particularly since it's free.  Just search gimp on Google, it should be the first result.  Also, for newspapers, if you have it Microsoft Publisher is a pretty effective since it's a lot more flexible at handling graphics that Word.  I've never checked to see if there's a free equivalent program to Publisher in Open Office.  Anyhow, I hope this helps!  I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got coming up next!

Congratulations on your move to Best Sellers!

Heh, that ship issue is something I experience, though I can almost bet that you're not in the same situation as I'm in (I play in Linux).  You could try first switching between hardware or software rendering mode.  Next, you could try editing the shortcut menu target to "C:\....\SimCity 4.exe" -d:opengl.  One primary problem with OpenGL is shadows will always be low quality, regardless of the setting in options.

The target box is greyed out for me. I did try to change it to software but the game had a seizure and froze.

Next update coming soon. :)

A bit of good news, first, changing it to software did actually make the game much smoother, where as before it lagged when I dragged across the town. It doesn't lag anymore.

Second, I changed the road texture to the euro style which is a lot more clean and streamlined. I hope you guys like it! :)

Here's another big update. (By the way, I hope these aren't too big)

One thing that seems to be bugging me recently is the little diner businesses that seem to pop up everywhere, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions to get rid of these repetitive buildings. I've downloaded quite a bit of custom content.

Hey, BuildingUp.

Sorry I don't stop in more often, I'm trying to break that habit. I'm really liking that work that I've seen from you lately. But, one thing: convert them PNGs! (Spoken like a true Redneck, <-- ME  $%Grinno$%) They take a while to load on my computer, and so I hardly can see your beautiful work.

As for the building repitition. Download a lot more building content (enough to grow a small city), and then use the BSC No Maxis files. It helps dwindle repitition, plus makes your cities look a while lot nicer, IMO.

It is a .PNG . A very lovely PNG at that. For some reason it isn't taking a long time to load, but, still in accordance with the rules, it would be great if it were a .JPG. I would suggest using IrfanView, it's a free download program, and it has the ability to slightly edit your pictures as well.

Also, CTRL-G, CTRL-G...

In 2010 a fire raged through sections of the city of Ruli. At first it was unknown what the cause could be, but eventually it was found out that arsonists who were mad at the government started the blazes. 13 people were arrested in connection with the fires but damage costs were sky high.

I'm liking the photoshopping in the last couple of teasers. You've certainly gotten a nice variety of buildings to grow in your cities. And, that fire looks like it was terrible. But, it is nice to see that my favourite house BAT (the orange one by Matt with the pool, in the lower left.) is still standing.

Ouch!  Quite the fire there.  Nice pair of urban shots in the last couple updates as well!  That shoreline looks pretty good for a start and the surrounding area looks excellent!  There's a very nice mix of trees and grasses in there already.

The smoothness of the transparent water on the shoreline can be broken up effectively with some of the Rural RP foliage items, particularly any of the plant controllers that have tall models like the reed grass and the bulrushes.  The nice thing is that those textures can overlap and poke through the transparent plopable water.  Rocks that have models large enough to poke through the water texture also break up the smoothness.

Hope that helps, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your efforts with plopable water!

No, not at all (to being unrealistic).  I've seen those kinds of shorelines when the water level is much higher or much lower than usual.

You don't have to go back and edit the prior ones, just try to do it in the future. I know that I'm hardly the one to be talking, but it is one of the MD rules.

There is a west side to Zone City that is mostly (so far) suburban neighborhoods.

Here's an example of what I've got so far;

Another update on Zone City's progress so far;

As you can see I'm working on the neighborhoods.

I'm not sure if all those roads are needed. They seem like they could be downgraded to streets. I like the neighborhoods.

Interesting stuff here.  I like your use of the grid, i.e. not quite symetric.  The building placement seems realistic, too.  Do you mostly plop or grow?  Oh, what is that five-story commerical office / apartment building with left side red and right side tan from reply #198?

Time for a brief history lesson. Taken from the "Hall of History" located in Ruli from 2205.

Daniel Conner Moore;
Mayor of Zone City
In Office; 2010-2015
Born; March 1 1972
Died; December 21 2057

Daniel Moore was a Mayor of Zone City. He took office in early January of 2010. Under his rule the city flourished from what was a relatively small community with a few farms to a larger more established township. In April of 2013 he signed into law a ban on gambling within the city limits in an attempt to lower the crime rate which had been a moderate issue for the town. He served one term from 2010 to 2015. After being the mayor of Zone City at the age of 43, Moore successfully captured the independent seat for President of the region. He would be president for a full two terms of 10 years. After leaving the office of the president in 2025 he left the political scene to live a more subdued life. Moore died of old age in 2057 at the age of 85. During his lifetime he had 1 daughter, adopted, named Ana Moore (2021-2115)

Ana Moore;
Environmental Advisory Committee
In Office; 2050-2060
Born; January 5 2021
Died; April 1 2115

Ana Moore (Ana Robertson) was a successful environmental adviser and daughter of Daniel Moore. She led the EAC out of Ruli for 10 years from 2050 to 2060. She was adopted, having cycled through numerous foster homes by the time Daniel Moore adopted her in 2029. She would lead a very comprehensive enforcement of new environmental regulations during her lifetime, including the national parks cleanup act of 2055. During her later years she would follow the same path as her father and leave politics. She started a gardening company in 2075 called Ana's Gardening Emporium. She would die in 2115 from old age. Several holographic advertisements in recent years tell of her work and history and a statue is dedicated to her at the EAC HQ in Ruli.

I figured some brief history wouldn't hurt since I haven't really put more history into this MD. More history will be coming. Replies to comments coming next update.

Still looks great here!  Nice diagonal stuff.  I'd really hate to live in those double fronting homes in the first Lexington picture there though!  The suburbs look really cool though.
