Title: Mikenstein - Niederbauen - Further Exploration
Post by: _Michael on March 25, 2016, 09:14:12 AM
So after hosting a CJ on Simtropolis for more than a year, I thought it was time to bring some content to SC4D! On this tread, I'll post some city showcases, along with some "In-Progess" shots, which won't be on the ST CJ.

Just to get it going, here are some pictures I recently shared on ST, the City of Bassenheim!

Since this is my first MD post, let me know if I'm doing anything wrong!
Hope you enjoyed a brief tour of Bassenheim!  :)

Hey! Nice to see you starting MD! :)

The first shots are very good! I really like your embankments and squares, as well as those raillines winding smoothly among the w2ws

Welcome to SC4D and great first entry!  &apls

As for practical stuff, SC4D adheres to a maximum image width of 1024px so they'll fit on most monitors. You can resize images by using the width tag, like so:

That being said, I really like the elevated rail slicing diagonally through the city, as well as the use of RFR plop water to make the canal. Must've taken forever to fill in!  :D

Also nice mixture of old w2w and modern highrise. Already looking forward to the next entry!

This is actually a superb first update !!!
I love the density and mix of architectures.
How did you manage to have Girafe's trees on the JENX "quai de Seine" ?  This is something I dream for a long time  ::)
I'm loocking forward to see more !

Some really nice stuff there.

A very tiny thing that could use some improvements, the lots with transit textures could use some TE. :)  (Auckland tower for example.) But still a really nice looking city. :)

A really excellent first entry here .

The custom sidewalk you are using is very subtle, but in many ways it really gives off a more European feel than many I've seen.

Otherwise a great selection of buildings which are combined in such a way to again add to the authentic EU feel. I look forward to seeing where you go from here.

One small niggle (I'm a stickler for uniform textures :P). I notice the RDP GLR depot is showing my GLR style, which you aren't using. If you remove the RDP Pack, re-run the installer, selecting "NAM Type", the correct GLR transition texture to match the NAM Rural GLR will appear instead.

Whata beatiful view at an autumn forest and a stream ;) However, the stream cause sidewalk to appear on a nearby road tiles, that looks a little bit odd. There is a mod, that removes sidewalk/dirt texture from the roads by agricultural zone (so you can zone it with holding ctrl and have a clear road), but I cannot find it now  &Thk/(

Some great rural scenes, mingled with some authentic looking small towns. You've put together a nice mix of buildings that work well together. The stream/river in the final pic is also especially worthy of note.

You need to install a mod that gets rid of the rail "undelay" or dirt. Rivit's RUM for RRW includes such a mod.

I often try to build such embankments at least one tile away from rural roads to avoid this issue too.

Great update, very nice to see you improving on all fronts!

And in the spirit of that I hope you don't mind some critique. First of all I agree with kbieniu7 the sidewalk on the country road in pic 2 caused by Diggis' streams is unfortunate. Besides using an invisible sidewalk, I'd also suggest to try using a little more space. By which I mean: try to incorporate some FAR stretches in the mountain road, rather than a string of s-curves hugging the cliff, as that'd be visually more appealing imho. It's a little tricky getting nice results with FAR on slopes, so it may take some practice. And in general, handling slopes needs some more attention as I noticed bumps and glitches on the rails, in pic 2 & 5 respectively. Perhaps try out a different slope mod?

That being said, I really like the clever use of Diggis' stream winding through the village, very nicely done!  &apls

Interesting village! Generally when you hear village you think small houses and not W2W but this is really nice.

I'll have to echo the critics said from the others though. I'm sure you can use them to develop different ideas around your villages.

Also you posted the forestry picture twice.

Once I posted the first instalment of Bassenheim on ST, back in March, I'd actually already finished the city, and was working on the next one. It's still nowhere near finished, but the centre is more or less complete. There will be likely lots of entries for the new city, but to start, we have the historic centre and a brief overview of the CBD. (As wells as some night-shots and some mosaics)
Hope you enjoy!

Some great rural scenes, mingled with some authentic looking small towns. You've put together a nice mix of buildings that work well together. The stream/river in the final pic is also especially worthy of note.

Thank you all for the comments. I have investigated the sidewalk issue, and have mainly solved it. Thanks all for the help.

That's one BIG city you have there, with lots of wide boulevards! :) And I must say that you've found a nice solution to the problem of the non-aligning gables of the Bâtiments de la Concorde. :D You have also been very good at integrating diagonal quarters in your city lay-out.

Mind if I ask what the 20th-century-looking building is on the corner left (in the 4th image) of aarsgevogelte's Yellow House? :)

Incredible city that is indeed. Lots of bug boulevards and open spaces, it's really nice.
You may want to replop a few buildings in the CBD seeing as they've become abandoned. (EDF, Gan and Chase towers)

I had a look round at the parts of Wolfskreut that I have just finished and thought these two mosaics might be quite good. The first is goes past the main train yard, anindustrial area and then onto farms and a country park. The second features one of the most open areas in the city centre - great in summer, but today we visit it in winter.

Since Gobias' terrain mods have been made available again, I've been busy changing from Meadowshire to the fantastic Bernese Oberland. This involved changing my override scripts which keep everything consistent; more work than you think - I think it's worth it though. What do you think?

I must credit @Vizoria for inspiring me in the MMP work; his CJ helped a great deal in providing ideas!

Hope you enjoy!

@michae95l Those look great!

The only two criticisms I have is the road crossing the rail deport with the multitude of crossing, it's completely unrealistic and looks a touch messy. The second is the building repetition, which in itself isn't bad but when it occurring so close together is just distracts from the overall look.

Some great work here with textures and unifying them all together. I really love Berner Oberland, I'm so glad that at least for now people can download Gobias' mods again.

I note you've some texture mis-matching going on, US textures on one of Rivit's mods I think. I may have some EU textures for those, did you make them from Rivit's repositories? Either way, PM me, I think we can get those fixed for you.

And another WIP Image:
Since my exams have finished, I've been working on this. I had laid out the canals, rails and highways about 10 months ago, when I first got the map, but left it at that. I then picked it up again and it will become a largish town. Hope you like! :)

Can't believe nobody has commented on this. What a nice city! Looks more like a city than a town. I love the plazas and the outdoor tables outside restaurants. Great work!!! &apls

I also love the canals and that one picture where all the railways split off from each other on the viaduct. I also like the use of FAR. I noticed you have some Maxis trees alongside that FA road in the first picture. You might want to get rid of them with this Maxis tree replacement mod (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/29333-sayonara-maxis-trees/).

Great! Very good choice of building, making the Old Town very cosy. They coresspond well with the pavement. Interesting layout of the roads - both those FARs as well as diagonal quarter at the second photo - quite refreshing!

From the previous updates, I really like the park and the avenue with bare trees. Got climate!

PS. That's an impresive point!

Looks great but.... Can you please upload your picture in jpg?
PNG is extremely heavier than most JPG picture and in most case the quality gain of a PNG vs a JPG is very minimal if not non existent.
It should really only be used for graphic stuff like maps.

Apologies, it's just PNG is just the default for a Mac screenshot. Since this has not been edited etc, I just uploaded the raw screenshot. All of my edited pictures and those in entries are always JPG. I'll try to remember to convert next time. (The file is only 4.6MB, and Imgur will have compressed that slightly also. That's not that big. Or is that just be being ignorant?)

PNG is also the default format for screenshots on windows. It's how sc4 do them. 4.6MB may not seem much for people with very good internet speeds, but some other people might be browsing the forum on mobile data plan or even on caped internet. (This still happens a lot in rural USA)

Very nice slope developement, seems that the final effect with all those retaining walls will be great :) I can see, you try to make some "palace quartier" on the right side of the screenshot ;)

PNG is also the default format for screenshots on windows. It's how sc4 do them. 4.6MB may not seem much for people with very good internet speeds, but some other people might be browsing the forum on mobile data plan or even on caped internet. (This still happens a lot in rural USA)
I've seriously had to alter the way I browse and use the internet since moving into the county (country). It's not very country, but aside from cell towers and satellite internet the only other option is dial up, and I'm not even sure what dial-up provider I could get nowadays, so instead we have data-capped satellite internet, which has seriously curbed my YouTube habit.

I've started to avoid forum based CJs as a result, which is especially a shame for SC4D, but also for ST due to the new way they render CJ listings (very image heavy).

Everyone expects the user to have wonderful internet, but don't make any allowances for the rest of us. It's all a conspiracy to get us to move to the cities. A conspiracy I tell you!  $%Grinno$%

But seriously, my browser just borked on the previous page; it was DLing too slow for the web browser to continue, and half of the pictures only half loaded (the bottoms are black) and the rest just don't show. It wouldn't be too bad except that reloading the page redownloads all the pictures on my DataCapped Satellite Internet. I don't have this problem when I go into town, but at home it really kills my MD/CJ reading.

Thanks for the advice on images all you guys.  ;)
For the ST Winter Scene challenge I was working on three images, and I just wanted to share them here. You'll see more of both the City of Niederbauen and the resort of Hörnli over the coming months, but in the meantime, I hope you enjoy these Christmas and Winter themed images.  :)

What an interesting contrast between right-bank classical district and left-bank skyscraper forest. Tradition vs modern architecture :) I took a deeper look into the first one, seeing that's going to be quite luxurious, because off all those palaces and high-wealth tenements. I'd like to see in detail the park with stairs in front the Cathedral.

From other points, I like the smoothness of road and highway layout in such (relatively demanding) narrow area of a city. And that small island in the middle of the river :)

Looking forward for more, hope you find time! :)

Edit: just got one remark: for me, the palace with white walls and blue roof in front of the railway station doesn't fit there. Both in this particular place (it's to narrow in its backyard) and coloristically (to bright comparing to other buildings).  And, at least for me, it  reminds me architecture of Estonia/Latvia or Finland, what quite confuses my perception of the city ;)

I agree, the contrast is very nice.
I don't like towering skyscrapers in my own cities, but this works nicely.
The "new" neighbourhood with the skyscrapers could be the result of some heavy gentrification of an old working class / industrial neighbourhood by an ambitious mayor  ;D

^^ Couldn't agree more with both comments above me... ;D Nice work so far  . It does take time to work a major updates hope we can see the best
The CBD with skyscrapers kinda reminds me of Canary Wharf in London... I think because of the riverview and the transition of classical w2w with modern highrises

It's been some time...
I've been away from SC4 for a while having been weighed down with RL events, but I finally managed to get more work done on the city of Niederbauen. I completed the historical center to an extent that I felt ready to show you guys and there's a lot left to show.

Hope you enjoy it!

Beautiful city. You obviously put a lot of work in it, with all the plazas and MMP work. I like it.
Just one small remark, i find that most shots are empty of life, like no cars or pedestrian around... A bit of a shame considering the beauty of the city.

I thought about that when editing the images, so I went back into the game to try and get some traffic generators working, but I couldn't get anything to look natural - and without rebuilidng the area to be growables (which would take weeks) I decided to leave it. Other areas have a much higher growable density, so should look more alive!

Love those parks and open-grass areas, as well as the squares (the one among the small and old w2w's, that is supposed to be a main market square, I guess)?

One remark from me: in the second photo, those orhto-to-diagonal corner w2ws look a bit... overcombined. I'd presonally demolish those two utmost ones that are in between the avenue, tram-in-road and the street.

However, good work with putting a diagonal bridge in such a dense area

I'm not quite sure what you mean by captions, and what would you like me to say in them - let me know!  :)

Magnificent! You realize the parks with much accuracy, they appear natural and the paths MMP of SM2 are great! The docks with all these boats are very beautiful too, and the city W2W is very well done. We want to walk the streets so much that it's beautiful!

It was high time to make an update! &apls

I mean a short description about the content of the image, such as which part of the city or map is.

I was going to just 'like' this latest entry but then I saw how many replies you had - and thought, really, this CJ is so good I'd love to help it on its way in to the Best Sellers section.

I really like your tram in avenue stuff in your latest entry. Lots of inspiration for a future town centre in my own region!

Well done so far and I look forward to what follows.

Title: Mikenstein - Niederbauen - High Rise and Mid Rise
Post by: _Michael on August 30, 2017, 04:29:33 PM
An even longer gap than last time - 145 days. I do apologise, but my RL has been very busy, and I've only really started playing again in the past few weeks. I've been working more of Niederbauen - filling in gaps so that it's good enough to show off. I've worked hard to compress the pictures this time, so they shouldn't take too long to load, although there is a rather large mosaic at the end.  ;D
Hope you enjoy!

Oh dear! Beautiful pictures, beautiful city! :) It's always a great inspiration to me seeing how you use buildings. Also I always find buildings, what I can't recognize on your pictures... Here is a short list (sorry :) ) :

1. picture: the blueish wheel-shape building and across the avenue the bigger square-shape building at the top of the picture (I guess that's only one building, you just put together it to make a block.)

2. That red-blue-ish square-shape building at the left-middle side of the picture.

4. I recognize JonM angled landmark where the railtracks go underground, and the station, but where can I find that (I guess modular) parking lot? and there is a strange building on the both side of it?

9. The tram (?) depo and the long brownlish/redish building?

12. That historycal bridge by the marina?

13. Well, the whole left side? That 4x2-ish building the otherside of the block where the two JENX Paris Corners are, and the building(s) above this block. And the buildings (which I know only one building put together) towards to the right bottom...

16. (on the mosaic) At the bottom(ish) I would like to know about the Office complex by the avenue bridge at the right side.

By the way it's amazing to see, how you put together these buildings making blocks etc... :) I really love it! I'm just wondering about their functionality... For example Debussyman's Budapest Roundabout buildings are supposed to be parks/landmarks, did you relot them and give the RCI functionality?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the comment. Let me try my best to answer all these.
1. The hotel can be found here (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/27852-blue-heaven-frankfurt-am-germany/). As for the 4x4 corner building (Which yes I've used to make a block of 16x16) I can't remember.
2. That is the CBC building (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/20325-canadian-broadcasting-centre/), I think.
4. Here is the modular parking garage. (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=3015) And here is the strange building. (http://descargas.capitalsim.net/?sitio=csc&descarga=801)
9. Here is the tram depot. And the brown warehouse is here on ST. (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=332)
13. Here are the grey buildings. (http://www.simcitypolska.pl/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=264) I don't know about the cream buildings off te top of my head.
16. One of the buildings is here. (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/13654-boston-city-hall/) The other two I can't remember I'm afraid.

Hope I've been of some help.

As for the functionality - many of the buildings aren't functional.

Thanks Michael!

I found the rest as well, apart from the first 4x4 corner building.
The creamy-ish building MS Jubiler (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/26675-ms-jubiler/)
The other one is Ferox's Warsaw Krakowskie Przedmiescie 2 (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/28116-warsaw-krakowskie-przedmiescie-2/)
The buildings around Frogface's Boston City Hall, propbably are creations from Ill Tonkso, but I thought those three buildings are on one LOT. :)
I'm a pretty early stage to recollect my lost plugins, so a lots of these buildings are very familiar to me, I just don't know their names to search them, thats why I asked! :)

Thanks again!

- Tyberius

Edit: matias93 found to me the 4x4 corner building (http://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/73220-cant-find-it-ask-here/?page=392&tab=comments#comment-1676625). The funny thing is, that I already downloaded that file about a week ago, that's why it was so familiar... :)

Your building selection is so perfect, the layout is spacious and logical.
Also, your MMP is well placed and sensible.

Well done Michael.

I hope the image links are all fine. Could you try in another browser - See if I need to fix anything?
Title: Re: Mikenstein - Niederbauen - Further Exploration
Post by: Tyberius06 on September 06, 2017, 11:54:21 AM
The problem was that here I couldn't see any image links, only over at Simptropolis, but due to the conflict between Google Chrome and imgur (according to the Chrome the page and link from Imgur are unsecure/unsafe whatever BrownSauce), I saw only the links not the pictures, so I had to right-click - open the link on new tab (i got the error page) - click the "advanced BS" and click the I continue anyway to the unsecure page link. So I got the imgur page with the picture. After this I can go back to the Simptro page and here as well, and after a F5 or page refresh, the pictures start appearing.

I can't check with other browser, because I use only one on PC and Android phone aswell. But this error is always appearing with imgur, I know because HalJackey's pictures are behaving the same way all the time! :) :(

Nice to see more ofyour photos! :) I really like the road layout in photo no 2, as well as that quarter of diagonal tenements. However, in my opinion they are too close to each other. Way too close.
