Title: DAVES' DAY!
Post by: dedgren on September 08, 2007, 07:21:21 PM
This year, September 18, 2007, shall forever escape the ignominy of being the date in history best previously remembered for the founding, in 1838, of the Anti-Corn Law League [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Corn_Law_League).

That's because Dave (tooheys) and your humble writer of this post, David (dedgren) were born on the 18th, and have jointly thus decided that it shall be ever after, in honor of all the Davids, Daves, Davies and other variations out there-

DAVES' DAY!

This site has already become a mecca for the Davids of the SC4 community, as evidenced by this thread- David's Unite! [linkie] (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=227.msg10368#msg10368).  Members who have stepped forward there and celebrated the wonder of their Daveness include

shoreman905

NASCAR_Guy
Archangel

We know there are way more Davids out there on SC4D- come out, come out, come out and join us, both by proclaiming yourself on that thread and 10 days from today in the gigantic public celebrations which we are quite certain will spontaneously erupt in every city and town more sophisticated than Upper Armpit, Iowa.  You don't believe us- look at the following, proof that the Lightness of Being David is far from Unbearable, and every Dave shall surely have his (and her, for all the distaff Davettes out there) day.

We've taken the time, though, to make you reflect a little bit on what an amazing thing to be a David is.  Who will be the first member to sort out the clue that goes with the correct pic (they're currently scrambled), and give us the names of each of these big D's?

Now, no cheating (for those of you who might figure out how).  Post your guesses on this thread, and no editing them once they're up.  You can, though, try as many times as you would like.  All entries will be checked out by a bona-fide and certified David.  Who knows what great things (Dave-for-a-day, perhaps?) will happen for the member who puzzles this out first.

Let the festivities begin!

I would of responded earlier but I was busy reading about the anti-corn law league. Rivetting stuff :)
Who would have thought I was born on the same date that that magnificent league was founded.

Daves' Day, a day for all Daves everywhere. I'm already stocking up the fridge in anticipation.

Some interesting Dave's you have pictured here Dave. I've worked most out, but a couple have me stumped.
I'll post my answers soon.

Cheers Dave

(PS he's the older one ;D)

Yeah, boi!

Davids unite!  YEAH!

I'm not a David, o'course, but this does make for an interesting event...

As for The David Connection there, is it an all-or-nothing guessing game, or can I take out some of them now and leave the rest for other people?  I know about four people, and about two of the clues...

Oh, by all means guess away...

Partial answers are fine, as it's playing, not winning, that counts in the long run in any event.

Oh well here's a start, might give someone else some ideas.

1.   ()what()
2.  David by Michelangelo - Heart of Stone
3.  David Bowie - Stardust Memories
4.  David Beckham -
5.  David Copperfield - A vanishing breed
6.  David Duchovny -
7.  David Hasselhoff - KITT
8.  David Hyde Pierce -  You'd be crazy too
9.  David Lee Roth -
10. David Letterman - The Number One Reason
11.  ()what()
12. David Crockett - Remember the Alamo
13.  ()what()

DAVID EDIT:  Six out of 13 correct, and from a Dave at that.  This was harder than I thought... -DE

Don't know if I'm allowed to play, what with not being named David, and all, so I'll hold off on answering in case I'm not, though I do know a few!

douwe, that there is, but I'm no saint. :)

dedgren, this is driving me nuts, you've ruined a nice peaceful Sunday arvo  ;D

I think I know who number 13 is, but still working on the others.  %confuso Maybe a beer will help, can't hurt.

Dustin, get your butt in here and help me out.

Cheers

Oh, c'mon...  You don't have to be a Dave to do this.

...you too can aspire to Dave-dom...

Let your inner Dave shine through.  Don't hide your Dave under a bushel.  Inside every Fred and Joe, there's a Dave trying to get out.

Dustin, all, take your best shots.

Oh, and we sent this to Dave (tooheys) after his manly, but shy of the mark attempt.

Hmm...shoulda checked back in this thread a bit sooner.

But as no one's guessed #1 yet: that's the late Dave Thomas, founder of the fast-food chain Wendy's.  The corresponding clue would be "Fries with that?"

DAVID EDIT:  That's one for one!  Clara Peller would be proud [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where's_the_beef%3F). -DE

I just changed one of the clues, too, as the previous one was a bit too arcane...

...now, even a Daveman can do it...

Title: Re: Daves' Day!
Post by: tooheys on September 09, 2007, 01:07:05 AM
1. Dave Thomas - Fries with that
2.  David by Michelangelo - Heart of Stone
3.  David Bowie - Stardust Memories
4.  David Beckham -
5.  David Copperfield - A vanishing breed
6.  David Duchovny -
7.  David Hasselhoff - KITT
8.  David Hyde Pierce -  You'd be crazy too
9.  David Lee Roth -
10. David Letterman - The Number One Reason
11.  ()what()
12. David Crockett - Remember the Alamo
13.  David Hewlis?   -

Well the revised list thanks to Masochist. Still short at least one name and having trouble linking the clues. So that should be 7 correct with one
of the clues in the wrong spot.

AAAH, someone solve this please :D

DAVID EDIT:  7 correct with one of the clues in the wrong spot indeed.  You are getting warmer.  If this goes on for too long, I'll give you peeks at a pair of very closely related hints.  -DE

No 11 is film instructor David Lynch.
Title: Re: Daves' Day!

I've got nothing. So time to guess.

1. Dave Thomas - Fries with that
2.  David by Michelangelo - Heart of Stone
3.  David Bowie - Stardust Memories
4.  David Beckham - Why Don't You Love Me
5.  David Copperfield - A vanishing breed
6.  David Duchovny - Have a heart
7.  David Hasselhoff - KITT
8.  David Hyde Pierce -  You'd be crazy too
9.  David Lee Roth -  What Bobby said she wore
10. David Letterman - The Number One Reason
11. David Lynch - Not just the rivers in Africa
12. David Crockett - Remember the Alamo
13. David Hewlis - Just know wrecked im

Vester, well done.

I think someone else better have a go at a full answer. I would hate to win based on all your responses  ::)
Of course if by some twist of fate that I do, although on my attempts so far this is highly unlikely, all those who assisted in my
efforts will become honourary Daves for that wonderful day, 18/09/07.

DAVID EDIT:  Still seven correct, although that's only because there's no partial credit.  Dave's laid down the challenge- c'mon and have a go.  I'll note that one of the surnames still needs some work. -DE

So everyone is stumped, there's moaning and groaning
but, c'mon get pumped, get your minds honing
a sport nic's a clue, so's a fan's lament
Speak about sources- watch Burton vent
Eddie's on-again friend cut 'em solo once, too

So there's your twin peeks, nay... several more
Think on this a bit- you're certain to score

Early morning gibberish.  Good luck!

If this is a problem, please let me know, and I will happily repost the new entry in a second post.-moved to new post further down page-

Though not David by name, I'd still like to give this a go. Some of these are educated guesses, others are just plain guesses... let's see what happens.

1.  David (Dave) Thomas - Fries with that
2.  David by Michelangelo - Heart of Stone
3.  David Bowie - Stardust Memories
4.  David Beckham - Just now wrecked 'im
5.  David Copperfield - A vanishing breed
6.  David Duchovny -  The Number One Reason
7.  David Hasselhoff - KITT
8.  David Hyde Pierce -  You'd be crazy too (a nice reference to Frasier)
9.  David Lee Roth -  Why Don't You Love Me
10. David Letterman - What Bobby said she wore (as in a letterman jacket perhaps?)
11. David Lynch -  Have a Heart (Wild at Heart is another of his films)
12. David (Davy) Crockett - Remember the Alamo
13.  David Thewlis  (from Harry Potter) -  Not just the rivers in Africa (no idea why)

DAVID EDIT:  Nice try, Matt- you are the first to get Mr. Thewlis's name correct.  Seven completely right- six not.  You have come up with some inventive mistakes, though. -DE

I'll give this another go:

1.  David (Dave) Thomas - Fries with that
2.  David by Michelangelo - Heart of Stone
3.  David Bowie - Stardust Memories
4.  David Beckham - Just now wrecked 'im
5.  David Copperfield - A vanishing breed
6.  David Duchovny - You'd be crazy too
7.  David Hasselhoff - KITT
8.  David Hyde Pierce - Not just the rivers in Africa (Niles Crane-from Frasier)
9.  David Lee Roth - Have a Heart
10. David Letterman - The Number One Reason
11. David Lynch -  What Bobby said she wore (Blue Velvet-Bobby Vinton-soundtrack to the movie)
12. David (Davy) Crockett - Remember the Alamo
13. David Thewlis (from Harry Potter) - Why Don't You Love Me

DAVID EDIT:  Whoo!  Way warmer!  Ten correct, and some real insight (I don't see any mention of the clues in yesterday morning's doggerel verse- reference to it should have been pretty helpful, although it was written in the old code.  My suggestion for those who will try from this point is to do a list of those you think are solid answers and those you think are tentative guesses.  Focus on the much smaller group. -DE

--edit: 9/10/07 10:50pm PST-- I decided to go ahead and make the 2nd post (the next one down) principly to signify a complete new submission. If there is a problem with that, feel free to combine the posts into one

Title: Re: Daves' Day!

Here, below, is my revised list... process of elimination, the "doggerel verse" and pretty much anyone who has posted prior, have helped put this one together. (I feel bad though, something similar happened in 3RR with the same person...pat... being the competition. However, if there is no problem with it...):

1.  David (Dave) Thomas - Fries with that?
2.  David by Michelangelo - Heart of Stone
3.  David Bowie - Stardust Memories
4.  David Beckham - Just now wrecked 'im (a sport nic's a clue, so's a fan's lament)
5.  David Copperfield - A vanishing breed
6.  David Duchovny - Why Don't You Love Me
7.  David Hasselhoff - KITT
8.  David Hyde Pierce - Not just the rivers in Africa (Niles Crane-from Frasier)
9.  David Lee Roth - You'd be crazy too (just reunited with Van Halen…eddie, after going their separate ways)
10. David Letterman - The Number One Reason
11. David Lynch -  What Bobby said she wore (Blue Velvet-Bobby Vinton-soundtrack to the movie)
12. David (Davy) Crockett - Remember the Alamo
13. David Thewlis (from Harry Potter) - Have a Heart

still confused about
“Speak about sources- watch Burton vent” and
“and an ex-00 said "this half's for you"”
but I think I got the right order now.

Hey threestooges that looks pretty good, and now that you've explained a few of the clues is starting to make sense.

You may well soon be an honourary Dave. Lets see what our torturer Dedgren thinks  :)
Title: Re: Daves' Day!

Yes folks...

WE HAVE A WINNER!

At a few minutes before 1:00 o'clock a.m. GMT on the 11th, our friend and Honorary Dave Matt (threestooges) posted the following
Quote
1.  David (Dave) Thomas - Fries with that?
2.  David by Michelangelo - Heart of Stone
3.  David Bowie - Stardust Memories
4.  David Beckham - Just now wrecked 'im (a sport nic's a clue, so's a fan's lament)
5.  David Copperfield - A vanishing breed
6.  David Duchovny - Why Don't You Love Me
7.  David Hasselhoff - KITT
8.  David Hyde Pierce - Not just the rivers in Africa (Niles Crane-from Frasier)
9.  David Lee Roth - You'd be crazy too (just reunited with Van Halen…eddie, after going their separate ways)
10. David Letterman - The Number One Reason
11. David Lynch -  What Bobby said she wore (Blue Velvet-Bobby Vinton-soundtrack to the movie)
12. David (Davy) Crockett - Remember the Alamo
13. David Thewlis (from Harry Potter) - Have a Heart

Matt noted that he was still a bit confused as to several of the clues, but whatever the situation, he has the list completely correct.  Congrats to you- we name you Dave-friend and invite you to check out real estate west of the Misty Mountains...

...no, wait- different universe entirely...

Matt, we'll see what's coming your way on the 18th.

* * *

A few thoughts about the contest.

1.  I thought the pic of Dave Thomas in his later years was pretty tough.  He's sort of the generic "old lookin' guy," but the "You want fries with that?" clue seemed to be a pretty broad hint that someone in one of those pics was associated with the fast food industry.  Heather didn't think it rated a clue as she figured somebody would get it right away by process of elimination.  It took Honorary Dave masochist to come along and help out.  Go figure.

2.  David/Heart of Stone.  There had to be a "gimme."  This one was it.

3.  The only thing I like better better that that pic of D. Bowie is hearing those opening words, "Ziggy played guitar..." roar out of the stereo.  Easy pair- True Dave Dave (tooheys) got that one right away.  Another DB fan, I presume?

4.  I thought everyone had to endure the same recent "All Beckham-All of the Time" news coverage we did when he came over to the 'states and then promptly got injured.  My first hearing about the guy a couple of years ago is inseparably associated with the phrase "Wreck 'em with Beckham."  Is it just me?  Was I dreaming these things?  Anyway, we weren't surprised when Dave's first guess got the pic right but were baffled with the "no idea" as far as the associated clue went.  Hence Heather's hint about "soccer not being your sport."  When Dave proposed "Why don't you love me?" I knew something stronger was needed and thus came, "a sport nic's a clue."  Matt nailed it shortly afterwards, but I was surprised by how long this one was open.

5.  I kind of thought David Copperfield was past the "big-time" years he enjoyed in the 90s, but he has a pretty distinctive mug.  "A vanishing breed" seemed like a very, very broad hint.  Dave apparently thought so, too, getting it the first time around.

6.  Jeez, wasn't The X-Files as inescapable everywhere else as wherever I was?  Funny, though, all I remember now about the whole thing is that Duchovny was in the show, the names Scully and Mulder, and that awful song, "Why don't you love me, David Duchovny?."  Dave got the pic right away- Heather gave a not really artful clue in saying "you don't follow music from foreign ports" (what if the guesser was from the US?).  I thought "A fan's lament" would allow someone to nail it, especially with the field narrowed down, but this one went all the way to Matt's last try.

7.  David Hasselhof/KITT.  Another gimme, at least if you watched bad 80s TV.

And then they got pretty tough.

8.  While Dave nailed IDing David Hyde-Pierce with his first guess, this one went all the way to Honorary Dave Pat's (patfirefghtr) last guess before "Not just the rivers in Africa" was puzzled out to mean "Niles."  Heather observed, "Geography's weak," which didn't seem to help much, so I thought I'd try to be clever with "Speak about sources- watch Burton vent."  The British explorers Speke and Burton engaged in a very public 19th Century argument about the discovery of the source of the White Nile [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nile).  I referred to "rivers" intending to call to mind the White Nile and the Blue Nile (the "Niles").  By the way, can any non-African member here recall from school the names of more than three African rivers?  I remember the Nile, Congo and Zambezi, and that's it.  I think the "Africa" component of my social studies class was about three class days long.  Pity.

9.  I looked hard for a pic of David Lee Roth that wasn't a dead giveaway.  Dave nailed it in his first guess, so one of rock's true wild men must be pretty notorious.  The clue though...  I thought it was way too easy.  Googling David Lee Roth would have had to have come up with the titles of his solo albums.  I can't find my CD of "Crazy from the Heat" [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_from_the_Heat_(EP)) right now, but I do intend to listen to the Rothman's take on "California Girls" again as soon as I find it.  Heather's "music from foreign ports" hint was meant to take "You'd be crazy, too" in.  I made that way broader with "Eddie's [Van Halen] on-again friend [recent announcement DLR is rejoining the group for a tour - Aaaaak!  Have you looked at pics of these guys lately  Better hope nobody knock over someone's oxygen bottle on stage with a bad wheelchair move] cut 'em solo [ref to DLR's solo "career"] once, too"  That obvious, but it took until Matt's last guess.  Go figure once again.

10.  D. Letterman/The number-one reason.  This truly was, "so easy, even a Dave-man can do it."  I tried to come up with better.

11.  I knew David Lynch wouldn't be easy.  I don't know how far his 15 (actually 20, movies and then TV) minutes of fame extended outside of the US.  The Bobbie Vinton reference in the clue only really makes sense if (a) you have personal memories of JFK's last year in office or (b) you saw the movie.  Me, I can never get "Wo, wo, wo" truly out of my mind- the song was inescapable in the late summer and fall of '63.  So, okay.  Heather hinted "commercial TV," but once again that was pretty obscure, and only meant to help in IDing Lynch.  We figured once that happened, it was only a matter of the next guess before someone would connect "What Bobby said she wore" with Lynch's film.  Why was that?  Google "Bobby she wore" and see what comes up.  Time passes.  Nobody's even close to getting the pic, so I comment after another try by Dave, "I'll give you peeks at a pair of very closely related hints."  "Twin Peaks," get it?  Trying to get you to think of Lynch and his creations.  It took Honorary Dave vester the next post to let everyone know who that pic was of.  I threw in with my rhyming hint an explicit reference to "twin peeks," but the guesses were all over the map until Matt's next to last try, where he connected all the dots.

12.  Davy Crockett/Remember the Alamo.  An easy one, gotten by Dave the first time around.  Crockett, btw, died at the Alamo, so it's doubtful he remembered anything.

13.  Da' stinka', as they say in Noo Yawk City.  I had no idea David Thewlis, after his performances as Lupin in the Harry Potter movies, remained so seemingly unknown.  Heather gave a first clue, "Quidditch...must not be your sport," trying to get people to think of the HP movies generally.  That must have worked, because Dave came up with "David Hewlis" in his next guess.  I commented that "one of the surnames still needs some work" to draw attention to that, and then gave what I thought would be an easily worked out puzzle hint in saying "and an ex-00 said "this half's for you."  Come on!  Didn't anyone else see "Dragonheart?"  The dragon, played by Sean Connery, who once possessed a license to kill (ex-00[7]), gave the evil King Einon (Thewlis) half of his heart (this half's for you) for no apparently good reason other than that Julie Christie asked.  It still took 'til Matt's winning guess, and Matt admits that he had no idea what my hint was referring to.

So, there you have them.  Everyone who played is either a True Dave or an Honorary Dave- Daveness rules!  Thanks for your interest in this.  It was fun.

We'll see you next week on Dave's Day.

i would have made a guess, but my little brother is already a "Dave" so I just passed. no, i'm not related to anyone on these forums. yet. my little brother might eventually become a SC4D Dave.

Well done threestooges and thank god  ;D

David well I made a start, I just needed someone to build on it :). My excuse:  I couldn't win and become an honourary dave, because I'm already a real one, so let someone else have a taste of what it means to be one of us. Sounds good to me  ::)

Even with a few of your explanations I'd still be strugglin'. As for David Lynch's fame outside the US, the phrase "wrapped in plastic" was one of my favorites back in the times of Twin Peaks, and it was my favourite show. I even had the soundtrack (record that is, no CD or tape).

I hope your better half is going to write us some verse for the big day (although nothing too criptic, I'd like to understand it  ;D)

So with a week to go, I thought I'd start stocking up for the big day.

Given this is a cyberparty, rest assured all the food will remain fresh until the 18th.

I will try to cater for everyone, but feel free to contribute if you wish. I'm sure David will reimburse you for any outlays  ;)

So for the meateaters

PS: David, that is a great game you have there. I noticed you have also used it in the 3RR. Well done, it's certainly a challenge.

Cheers

I suppose (though there is another thread for it) this would be an appropriate place to congratulate a particular David on their new CML. It looks great, and in good time too... the big day is only two away.

Pat, I have to say you helped me quite a bit with a few of them. As far as I'm concerned you should share in the title too.

Tooheys, great spread you have prepared. Perhaps something for dessert? There's a little place up in Boston that has been getting some attention lately...

Some cake for the seafood fans:

And some for the fans of that fridge:

And yes, that is cake (http://www.charmcitycakes.com)

Looking forward to the big day. Hope it's good for both of you.

So! Before the Sushi is all eaten I thought I'd make a stop here before I continue slaving away at the books. :(

Seeing that it is, according to Tooheys' profile, "September 18, 2007, 06:25:26" where he is, I am going to take this opportunity to wish him a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! (for when he wakes up... :P)

David, uhm... Dedgren, you're going to have to wait just a little while more... Well, just under half a day more! ;)

In the meantime I'm going to enjoy this Sushi and ride the tide of Dave-ness! :P

dragonshardz, anyone can be an honoury Dave today, just remember you turn back into an ordinary person at midnight  ;D

I swear to you all, I remembered. Happy birthday David (that should cover all the Davids for the year, right  ;). Sorry guys I can only stop in now and then for the next month or so, but as a David (rehab is going well, we will graduate Bobs, I think) we are all forever linked ( now that is a disgusting thought). I announced the existance of Dave's Day to my wife, showed her the posts related to said, and believe it or not, she sent me a Dave's Day card (that she made, cool I think). Until next DDay, God Bless, and remember all the talent resides in Daves.

Well, guys...With the first annual Daves' Day in the bag, I must ask the question: How's the hangover???

Well it's several days later, and a stocktake of braincells would suggest I may have lost 1 or 2 (thousand). Of course a few more Dave Days and I could be in a lot of trouble.

Dave (Shoreman), Dave Day cards, now that is something, can you show us the card, or is it a tad too
personal  ;) Of course Dave day is another 12 months away, but after some consideration with myself, this site will re-open with each Dave birthday.

In this regard we need a register. Dedgren your a man with considerable resources, are you able to dig into the secure vaults of SCD4 and provide some Dave birthdays. Of course, if you're a Dave, just let us know when your birthday is. So far I've got two (and I worked so hard
to get this info  ::) )

Sept 18 Tooheys (Dave the Younger)
Sept 18 Dedgren  (David the Eldest - Diggis quote, not mine)

The more the merrier, literally, Dave parties throughout the year, leading up to the big one.

So let us know your DOB.

Cheers

Dave

Happy Dave's day boys.... As a special tribute to my Aussie friend he will have a prop in the next ponds addon:

However, being the Aussie he is, he pointed out a few things I was missing:

Last year we noted that this date, September 18th, would forever escape the ignominy of being the date in history best previously remembered for the founding, in 1838, of the Anti-Corn Law League [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Corn_Law_League).  That was because Dave (tooheys) and your still humble writer of this post, David (dedgren) were born on the 18th, and jointly decided that it shall be ever after, in honor of all the Davids, Daves, Davies and other variations out there: DAVE'S DAY!

Well, a year has passed, along with much water under the proverbial bridge, and here it is the 18th again-

DAVES' DAY '08!

...we considered renaming it Son of Dave's Day, but neither of us was willing to take a paternity test...

As we noted last year, SC4D has become a mecca for the Daves and Davids of the SC4 community, as evidenced by this thread- David's Unite! [linkie] (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=227.msg10368#msg10368).  Members who have stepped forward there and celebrated the wonder of their Daveness include

shoreman905
tooheys
NASCAR_Guy
Archangel
urban
moganite
dedgren
deadwoods
sepsis
your_adress_here
bighead99
Simpson
Voltaire

We continue to believe there are way more Davids out there on SC4D- as we urged last year- come out, come out, come out and join us, both by proclaiming yourself on that thread and today in the gigantic public celebrations which we are quite certain will spontaneously erupt this year in every city and town more sophisticated than Upper Armpit, Iowa (they didn't seem to make the papers last year, but now we have a year's momentum going for us).  You don't believe us- look at the following, proof that the Lightness of Being David is far from Unbearable, and every Dave shall surely have his (and her, for all the distaff Davettes out there) day.

We've brought back, from the endless supply of amazing Daves out there, a second round of the contest we ran last year [linkie] (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=2326.msg69098#msg69098).  Go ahead, give it a shot and reflect a little bit on what an amazing thing to be a David it is.  Who will be the first member this year to sort out the clue that goes with the correct pic (they're currently scrambled), and give us the names of each of these big D's along with the meaning of the clues?

OK...

1. David Farragut. "Cursed torpedoes"--Quote made by Admiral Farragut, "Damn the torpedoes!"
2. ?
3. David McCallum. "not Solo"--McCallum played Illya Kuryakin, not Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) on Man from U.N.C.L.E.
4. David Spade. "Just shoot me"--Spade starred on Just Shoot Me.
5. ?
6. David Livingstone. "Stanley presumed" --David Livingstone's identity was presumed by Henry Stanley.
7. ?
8. New York Governor David Paterson. "Hey, governor"--self-explanatory.
9. ?
10. David Cassidy. "Started out as one of the family"--Cassidy started out on The Partridge Family.
11. Davy Jones of the Monkees. "Advised Sleepy Jean"--Reference to the Monkees' song "Daydream Believer," with the line "Cheer up Sleepy Jean."
12. David Arquette. "Mr. Cox"--Arquette is married to Courteney Cox (who danced with Bruce Springsteen in the "Dancing in the Dark" video in 1984).
13. ?

EDITHoly Cow, Dustin!  I thought this year's contest was significantly harder than last year's, and you went eight for eight right out of the box.  Good take on the clues, too.  I must be getting soft. -DE

It was luck for me, David--you just happened to choose people in my wheelhouse. I grew up watching Nick at Nite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_at_Nite) as a child with my grandmother and aunt, so that got me Davy Jones and David Cassidy, watching the Democratic Convention in Denver got me New York's Governor (otherwise I never would have gotten that one!), about a semester's worth college history classes got me Farragut and Livingstone, Arquette and Spade were easier, and David McCallum happens to be on one of my favorite shows, NCIS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCIS_(TV_series)) (I've seen an episode or two of Man from U.N.C.L.E., too, that's how I put the clue together).

After looking at last year's, this year was significantly tougher, the stars just happened to align for me!

Now if someone can fill in the blanks and take all the credit, my work here will be done...

Thanks again everyone

Well, coming up on a full day...

As our contest has made it pretty much once around the world, let's throw out a few clues for the remaining three, as two appear to be pretty much generic old-guy Daves and the third, while he has a nice smile, isn't exactly someone who would stand out in a crowd.

Here goes-

The three that are left- a challenging trio
'cos now Souter's gone, my oh, me oh...
so here's a few hints, whether they'll help
who knows? at least now you can't yelp
One of the three was passionate about mother
One of the three isn't Earl's younger brother
Oh, those two are about useless, this last not so, sir
One of the three was the essence of kosher
So the music is playing on most every TV
The desert is blooming, the club hugs a tree
and these clues, as arcane as they are
if you think about them with care- you might be a star!

Good luck!

David

n.b.We've also added bona fide Daves bighead99, Simpson and Voltaire to our Davelist [linkie] (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=2326.msg181443#msg181443).  If you are a Dave and not on it yet, let us know. -DE

I'm at a loss on these last three David, even with your poem! Though something tells me that I'm going to be hitting myself when the answers are revealed...
Title: Re: DAVES' DAY!
Post by: threestooges on September 19, 2008, 08:57:22 PM
Well, I was thinking about letting the title go to another honorary Dave, but let's give this a go. Three left and a puzzling poem... and someone already got Souter.

country man (one of the three isn't earl's younger brother-thought this was some sort of reference to "My Name Is Earl" but I can't make a connection)

music's on the telly - Don't know, and the poem adds to the confusion

But I do have a guess at one:

1. David Farragut - "Cursed torpedoes"--Quote made by Admiral Farragut, "Damn the torpedoes!"
2. David Beach - friend of the earth (one of the three was passionate about mother)
3. David McCallum - "not Solo"--McCallum played Illya Kuryakin, not Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) on Man from U.N.C.L.E.
4. David Spade - "Just shoot me"--Spade starred on Just Shoot Me.
5. ?
6. David Livingstone - "Stanley presumed" --David Livingstone's identity was presumed by Henry Stanley.
7. David Souter - "Substantial Justice"
8. New York Governor David Paterson - "Hey, governor"--self-explanatory.
9. ?
10. David Cassidy - "Started out as one of the family"--Cassidy started out on The Partridge Family.
11. Davy Jones of the Monkees - "Advised Sleepy Jean"--Reference to the Monkees' song "Daydream Believer," with the line "Cheer up Sleepy Jean."
12. David Arquette - "Mr. Cox"--Arquette is married to Courteney Cox (who danced with Bruce Springsteen in the "Dancing in the Dark" video in 1984).
13. David Niven - "Among the various Bonds?"

-edit- After seeing wes.janson's post below I looked back over the clues... Is No. 5 David Bowie? (complete wild guess)

EDIT: Hey, Matt!  Well, it's not David Beach, I'll say that.  Ahhh, I must be doing my job... -DE
Title: Re: DAVES' DAY!
Post by: wes.janson on September 19, 2008, 09:57:55 PM
9. David Ben-Gurion - Country Man (First Prime Minister Of Israel

EDITWes, absolutely, positively 100% correct. -DE
Title: Re: DAVES' DAY!
Post by: thundercrack83 on September 19, 2008, 11:55:00 PM
Got it! I think...

2. David Brower. "Friend of the earth." First Executive Director of the Sierra Club, an environmental organization. "Passionate about mother," as in the earth.
5. David Gray. "The music's on the telly." English singer-songwriter. Also, "not Earl's brother," as in Earl Grey, I presume?

EDITWe have a Winner!  Dustin, you are now among the Daves- entitled to all the benefits of joining this small and elite corps of world-shakers.  Heh!  That and (US) $1.75 will buy you a cup of coffee... or I will, if I can get you up here to Alaska.  Thanks, everyone, for playing! -DE

Well done Dustin. If I couldn't reclaim the title, I'm glad it went to someone like you (who went 8/8 on the first guess).

Joan, as far as 50 cent cups of coffee, my school has one. It's small, comes from a vending machine, and I'm guessing beans are involved at some point... it's drinkable.

Happy Dave's Day again to all the Daves (new and old) out there.

We're now just under three weeks to the year's biggest SC4D event!

...actually, a little bigger than even we intended...

September 18th, of course, is Daves' Day '09, the third time in three years this annual celebration of Daveness is hosted by your official Daves' Day Hosts Dave (tooheys) and David (dedgren).

So, shout out your Davitude here [linkie] (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=227.0).  Even if you aren't a Dave, David or Davette by birth, everyone can be a Dave for a DayTM on Dave's Day!

It's the third annual "Name that Dave" contest!

We've once again brought back, from the endless supply of amazing Daves out there, a third round of the little competition we have run in 2007 [linkie] (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=2326.msg69098#msg69098) and 2008 [linkie] (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=2326.msg181443#msg181443).

The object of the contest, by way of refreshing your recollection, is to both identify the baker's dozen of Daves, Davids and Davys whose pics appear below and match them up with the appropriate phrase.  Some are pretty easy, others are... well, let's just say a bit more obscure.  In 2007 our great friend Matt (threestooges) won the contest two days after it started.  Last year it only took Marathon Man Dustin (thundercrack83) a day.

The rules remain no cheating (for those of you who might figure out how).  Post your guesses on this thread, and no editing them, please, once they're up.  You can, though, try as many times and as often as you would like.  All entries will be checked out by a bona-fide and certified David.  Who knows what great things (Dave-for-a-day, perhaps?) will happen for the member who puzzles this out first.  As before, there may be hints if folks appear to be floundering.

Okay, no guesses all day...

It must be time for some clues.

The contest this year
so it would appear
has inspired in you
much dread and fear
but friends- worry not
because here come some clues
which you find quite handy
when you put them to use

You see the nice gentleman
whose pic's at the top?
spent four years in office
and then got the chop

The next guy we see
had his life made quite hard
by a man with one arm
and a cop named Gerard

The third pic's of a man
who, along with the other,
probably told us goodnight
more times than our mother

The fourth bloke's a Brit
who, despite never going to college
left us with much evidence
of his inestimable knowledge

If music's your love
and Narada your label
the fifth fellow's easy
just check the turntable

The sixth pic should be easy
for students of British history
although to me that country's governance
remains quite a mystery

Our seventh Dave was a Caine
on network TV
A mere grasshopper...
Ahhh- this one's too easy!

The eighth gent's long dead
gone off to the beyond
but students still read
of his life at the pond

The ninth pic is of a fellow
whose can be said to have come
all the way from the Ramparts
to Fox News stardom

Number ten is a Dave who
went to war with a pen
and wrote of the best and the brightest
of Kennedy's men

Pic number eleven shows us a guy
who's a political pundit
I know this one's hard
but there's no way around it

This next to last pic
is it from the 60s you ask?
it was a quite a bit more recently
this Dave took Nixon to task

The last pic is of a man
whose life is worth a look
he was a botanist, a mountaineer
and died the same place as Cook

So these are the clues
although some are a bit thin
the hints are all there
go use them and win!

Dave:

This may be proving that only a Dave-man can do it.

1.  Correct, but needs explanation.
2.  Ditto.
3.  Ditto.
4.  Partially correct, but which part?  Hmmmm.
5.  See No. 1 above.
6.  Ditto.
7.  Ditto.
8.  Ditto.
9.  See No. 4 above.
10.  See No. 1 above.
11.  Finally!  Nnnnnnnnnnk.  Next guess, please!
12.  See No. 1 above.
13.  Ditto.

So, it looks like the winner will have lots of 'splaining to do.  That, and figure out what the problem is with Nos. 4, 9 and, of course, 11.

Ten matches, though.  Massively impressive.

I think these would be the missing ones:
4: David Bradley: Elemental Discoveries (British Journalist who has a webzine named "Elemental Discoveries" and has written extensively on science and technology in his life.
9: David Asman: Man of the Times (Ok, so he started with the Wall Street Journal, but he does work for Fox News hosting Forbes on Fox.
11: David Horowitz would be Left to Right. According to a bit of research, he was originally a Marxist and later a conservative

Bringing in Dave the Younger's bits:

1.David Dinkins - One for two with Rudy Contested NY Mayor election against Rudy Giuliani twice. Won the first, lost the 2nd
2.David Janssen - On the run Played Richard Kimble in the TV series, The Fugitive
3.David Brinkley - Good night Chet Co-hosted The Huntley–Brinkley Report, with Chet Huntley. Sign-off Line
5.David Lanz - A piano-makers dream  Grammy nominated pianist
6.David Lloyd George - English as a second language Born in Wales. Welsh was his native tongue
7.David Carradine - The man from Lipton Once a spokesman for Lipton
8.Henry David Thoreau - Tax Protester Refused to pay tax for a number of years in in protest of slavery and the Mexican/American war. Later lectured to explain his actions
10.David Halbertson - A man of the Times (yesterday) Times journalist during the Vietnam war. Later a political reporter and wrote a book on the Kennedy Administration. Died 2007
12.David Frost - TW3 Host of That Was the Week That Was aka TW3
13.David Douglas - A man of Pines A botanist who liked his pines and was first to cultivate quite a few

should complete the list.

Ok, so I got the Fox News thing backwards I think.

9: David Horowitz: Left to Right (used to edit for a magazine called Ramparts.)
11: David Brooks: Man of the Times (and indeed his picture does come up when you do an image search of his name on Google.)

At the comment of one whose Dave-ness is unquestionable, and whose avatar has a headache that is seemingly insurmountable, the guess for 4 was a bit too contemporary for the picture (doesn't look like that guy would be very internet savvy). So with that, and some additional scrounging of the net for various things relating to elements and their discovery, I stumbled upon a Dave of sorts:

Humphry Davy to be exact. A British scientist known for discovering many of the alkali and alkaline earth metals (Columns I & II of the periodic table). He had some school, but does not appear to have been to college. So, that should make things:

1.David Dinkins - One for two with Rudy Contested NY Mayor election against Rudy Giuliani twice. Won the first, lost the 2nd
2.David Janssen - On the run Played Richard Kimble in the TV series, The Fugitive
3.David Brinkley - Good night Chet Co-hosted The Huntley–Brinkley Report, with Chet Huntley. Sign-off Line
4.Humphry Davy - British Scientist who noted many Column I & II metals and didn't go to college as one would expect.
9: David Horowitz: Left to Right (used to edit for a magazine called Ramparts and also made a left-right political switch.)
10.David Halbertson - A man of the Times (yesterday) Times journalist during the Vietnam war. Later a political reporter and wrote a book on the Kennedy Administration. Died 2007
11: David Brooks: Man of the Times (and indeed his picture does come up when you do an image search of his name on Google.)
12.David Frost - TW3 Host of That Was the Week That Was aka TW3
13.David Douglas - A man of Pines A botanist who liked his pines and was first to cultivate quite a few

Whoa, Matt!  That's two out of three of these!

Yes, folks, we have a winner.

...I knew I posted those darn clues too early...

The official Dave for a Day coronation will have to wait 'til Dave's Day on the 18th, of course, but here's a few observations.

-Good catch on Humphry Davy- I tried to actually give as sideways sort of clue

...is to both identify the baker's dozen of Daves, Davids and Davys whose pics appear below...

in the post that kicked things off.  The David Bradley guess was an interesting one, given the pic.

-I wonder if David Horowitz will follow the whole trajectory set out by The Bobs [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bobs)?

   ...first I was a hippie-
   then I was a stockbroker...
...now I am a hippie again!

-Ahhh, using the image search function of Google...  I'll have to take that technology into account in future contests.

-The Douglas Fir is named after David Douglas, who sounds like he was quite the character [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Douglas).

Big 'grats, Matt.  You sure your middle name isn't David, my friend?

David

Thanks David. I couldn't resist having a go at this one, especially after seeing Dave the Younger (and the one who provided much help for this) dive right into it. Never too early to start the celebrations Dave the Elder, and this was a fine way to get going. The trick with a google image search is that you need to have an idea of the name first to confirm with. David Bradley may be interesting when compared to the pic, but he seemed like a fine choice when I typed in "David Elemental Discoveries" into Google and found out about his webzine matching the clue's title and fitting the hint somewhat, being British and all...

Thanks for hosting a third competition for this. These things are fun.

Sorry you didn't get a chance to take a stab at these Pat. I know you could've taken a good run at them. Hope you're healing well.

Post by: dedgren on September 18, 2010, 03:09:15 PM
It's been low key- no contest this year...

...yet, anyway...

but it is that day once again- yes, the 18th of September- that day when the unbearable Daveness of being is celebrated with wild abandon by Davids, Daves, Davettes and Those Who Would Be Dave everywhere.  Check on in, all you Daves, and let the world once again feel the love.

On a serious note, it is Dave's (tooheys) birthday and he has faced a health issue or two recently.  That's just not acceptable, and it would be great to let him know you're thinking about him today.
