A MD by ExiLe
...an introduction
I have been thinking about doing a MD for quite some time now, but have been absent either traveling the world, working my ass off or studying. I am still studying, and working for that matter, but now that I have changed my subjects I found that doing a MD would fit into my course.
To make things clear I am now taking my masters degree in urban planning at University of Life sciences in a small town called Ås outside of Oslo. I've had this idea for about a year now to make a MD about how I plan things ahead of actually building things in-game, and how I sometimes (or very often...) tend to build on impulse. Since I'm learning more and more each day about maps, planning, construction, architecture and much more, doing some planning for fun on the side seemed like a good idea to me.
So, hopefully we will se some improvements to my planning and mapping skills over time, since I'm going to take my time with this one (I promise).
The way this MD is set up might be a bit weird, but it's the way I wanted it to be;
First off, I have already found a map, made some changes to it (we'll come back to that part) and some cities have already been laid out.
For some time now I will work on the Intro to the MD, and I will call it an intro until the whole map has been laid out, built and planned... THEN the MD will actually start.
The idea is having a large region that is already built, and start expanding and correcting problems that have been done earlier (yes, the way it is done in RL in other words).
The idea:
• Intro: creation of the larger Kongshavn region
• The MD "starts": Growth over the years in Kongshavn, and it's surrounding cities.
• Finishing up...?
I have no time scheme, or schedule for this MD... in other words I have no real "goal" for this region. And that's the way I like it.
This might take some time ladies and gentlemen ;)
Following I will show you some pictures of my first thoughts about Kongshavn (most of these are close to 1 year old). Some of these thoughts will, and have been used, but the map has changed somewhat (it's larger for once). Most city and town names are fictional or might have a connection to a RL situation, and they are based on Scandinavian town naming traditions. Although, most Germanic speaking person should understand what most of the town names mean.
I also hope to create some discussion in the forums about planning, with both those of you who are professional - and hobby planners.
...so as I was saying I started thinking and planning on this MD well over a year ago, this post will be about that time, and those pictures.
This first picture was made October last year, and was just something I threw together in PaintNET as a quick guideline for the larger Kongshavn area. Some of the ideas and names will still be used, though since the map is now bigger than before, I will not use the transportation system planned for that map.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg231.imageshack.us%2Fimg231%2F4002%2Fkongshavnearlyplansme1.th.jpg&hash=0e6d37237d1c3397738d54a6a61ea5a30a3aa79b) (http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kongshavnearlyplansme1.jpg)
-as you can see the only thing this map gives you is dodgy info about the general location of towns and some connecting roads. Not a very good map, but it gave me some guidance on where to put things, and names of towns (some have later been changed somewhat).
Next up is something I called Kongshavn aswell, a totally other region actually, handmade with a massive harbour/port (down in the right corner). I still think this region exists on my HDD somewhere, but it is not really something I am going to finish. The area that is quickly sketched was supposed to be the CBD and main areas of "Kongshavn".
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg231.imageshack.us%2Fimg231%2F1876%2Fkongshavn2kgx2.jpg&hash=b5566c2c6cd2ba0cd65952f5f5be75e5ae963f91) (http://imageshack.us)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg231.imageshack.us%2Fimg231%2F1876%2Fkongshavn2kgx2.9fee444f83.jpg&hash=44af1c092ab45158e4237043aba6c586f87873cc) (http://g.imageshack.us/g.php?h=231&i=kongshavn2kgx2.jpg)
This last picture gives you an Idea on how Kongshavn looked in its really really old days. I was thinking about making this a historic MD, but turned away from that idea pretty fast as I hate writing for an eternity about bull I come up with... XD
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg142.imageshack.us%2Fimg142%2F7251%2Fkongshavnoldtownsjy1.th.jpg&hash=b4df06c7befe95abcd4ec9bfa867e5dff22bf02a) (http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kongshavnoldtownsjy1.jpg)
-the yellow lines are old roads, well ancient might be more correct. If I were to date this image of Kongshavn to "our time" I would say some time before 1200 AD.
Hope you peeps enjoyed this fresh edition of my new MD.
any thoughts and ideas (helpful or not) are gladly appreciated!
edit: I would like to thank every BAT'er, LOT'er, MOD'er out there who continues to give out amazing stuff on all the SC4 sites. You guys make this game sooo much more enjoyable, and I would specifically like to thank REBEL 13 for his map site, which still has some awesome maps (it's been around for a "while"), and of course his map that I am currently using: columbiasc or Columbia, South Carolina.
(somewhat modified to be fair though ;) )

Enjoy peeps!
Exile you have a good start here and I love that Map and I cant wait to see more of Kongshavn!!!
&apls thanks pat, my first reply in this MD. At least someone showed some interest :D
Anyhooo... Here is a small picture (small because of the res., duh!) dedicated to you pat.
It is a small area of the FIRST city I clicked "play" on. In other words, there are many more to come!

Kongshavn looks great. I'll be sure to check back. Your residential areas look good. Just keep doing what you're doing and you'll have a good MD.
Interesting concept. I'll be interested in seeing your progress.
By the way, the pictures are really nice.
Marc
This MD is a nice one. I like it. ;)
I like your pictures, they look excellent.
I'll follow this one, it seems like it can give me some inspirations. ;D

ahhh shucks thanks Exile for the honor and its my pleasure to have made the first offical post!!! Loved the homes and business, btw speaking of which where did you get those homes in the 3rd pic to the left?
Replies
PM: Thanks! I like to vary in my residential layout (well and in any other actually), and I am not a big fan of a huge grid net.
mbsimcity: wow, so you really read the whole lot? Impressive :D , well thank you, and I hope to make the best of it!
Sheep49: Thank you for that man! I hope it might be at least something a bit different if not much compared to other MDs... Which is very hard as there are soooo many!
Pat: ah, but you deserve it! And I am guessing you meant these homes?

yuppers those are the ones I meant and thank you for the link there Exile!!!
Looks very Scandinavian with the fancy villas and the ugly prefabed apartment buildings. Kjempe flott ;D
very nice...great pictures of the residential areas. I look forward to more.
Awesome! Nice to see an MD with a norwegian theme.

art128: Hi man, thanks for the comment. It is a bit of a slow start, but thats how I like it. Don't want to rush into things you know!
Pat: No probs! Hope you enjoy the BATs!
metasmurf: jätte mysigt inte hur!? XD, anyways thanks mate, more to follow!
Yoder7652: Thanks! can't wait to get on with this MD, even though it will require loooots of time...
Mulefisk: Hei der muldyr-fisken! The theme of this MD is kind of Norwegian, but then again I like to use so many other styles aswell, it more or less ends up being a "germanic" theme... anyhoo, hope seeing you around here more!
Talking about my MD, looks like I am having some problems with my Commercial areas. The only growables who seem to, eh grow, are albert heijn by oppie, rzeczna4 by a polish BATer, and some few others... Need to find out whats the problem before I can show more of those areas.
Here is a picture of another RES area, that I just made 10 min ago! :D

Very good!
beautiful update !!
Great update! I just love the picture with this industrial part of Kofting  It looks so beautiful and balanced.
Hewever, I have a slight complaint: I don't like that photoshop effect in some of your pictures. In my humble opinion it looks almost fatal in conjuction with your influential, and highly european building style.
I like this update! &apls It looks like a mix between Arthur, ejc, and even Casper! I thought that it's impossible to make such a great mix. Thanks to you, I found that In was really, really mistaken. ;)
Keep up the great work!
Piotr
Nice update, I really like your downtown area and the mix of different zones and buildings. (But those effects, I agree they look a bit hasty though...)
Anyway good work, keep it up! Looking forward to next update.
Cheers!
REPLIES
Bat: Hia, thanks for your nice comments mate, hope you'll still find my MD interesting as Kongshavn grows!
SouthPark: Thanks! I'm doing what I can on the time schedule I have, which isn't much to be honest.
Geronimo: Næmmen takk skal du ha! Alltid hyggeling å høre fra "kjentfolk" ;). Hope to hear more from you man!
Sciurus54: Sweet! thanks, there are tons more to do in those photos, what I am showing is just the very very fresh start ;)
Sheep49: ellooo there, I agree with both you and Geronimo (check below), and thank you so much for your constructive criticism. I love both Caspers and EJCs stuff, so that really meant a lot to me! thanks!
- as a combined answer to both Sheep49 and Geronimo; I totally agree folks, It looks very hastened because it was, and I did not really have time to edit it after i chose how to keep some areas blurred from you guys ;). I'm going to use something totally different in the future... probably just going to clip the image to the wanted area and apply the sc4d forum background to blend in :)
- your comments mean alot to me, watch out for an update soon... enough ;)

Awrite!
It's been a month since my last post, and I have a couple of exams coming up now, and one term paper.
Anyhoo, I need some time off from all the reading so I'll post an update during the Weekend.
I have actually played SC4D quite a lot, and have come far in plopping and planning northern parts of Kongshavn, and Kofting is more or less "finished" except for the farm areas.
My first exam will be on Tuesday, it's about the gathering of information around regional planning, and is very interesting stuff!
I'll implement some images and text from what I'm reading and relate it to Kofting and some other areas that are already built.
I might also show some of the plopped areas of Northern Kongshavn, but nooo promises ;)
see ya'll soon,
take care
cant wait on those updates! you have some nice work, and i think some good things can come in the future especially if this is a field your studying in school :)
Wow, this update is really fantastic
My preferate picture is the second, this little village is so réalistic
UPDATE
Awrite!
Now, I've been reading all day so I thought I should take a break and give you guys a couple of pictures.
I know I said I might post a few pictures, but they will have to wait a couple of days, I do not have that much time right now.
From these few images you'll find areas that are in planning stages, or being improved upon.
I will give a lot of information later, on how these areas might look like, what needs to be done, and what can be done.

- Here you can see how the traffic from the city centre is not allowed to enter the industrial-/shopping area, and the freeway to the north. The fastest way for the casual shopper is to take the train, though lot's of traffic still has to cross the city rail line over an alternate route that not only takes a lot more time, but also brings large amounts of traffic through a residential area. Obviously this will all be fixed when the new tunnel, which is underconstruction, is finished.

UPDATE 23 January
Hi guys, I am back in SC4 town!
Even though I have not posted for a while, I have not been idle either.
Actually I have had some time to finish off 3 Regions, as of now. Well technically they are not finished, but they are ready to be improved upon at a later time...
The 3 areas I am talking about are, Kofting, Follduland and Vargheim-Kjerre. Kofting which is the area are you have seen the most images from, is represented as the larger urban area south on the picture. Vargheim-Kjerre, which is technically two areas, but one region, is a totally new region. The last, Follduland, you have seen some photos of, and is the area between Kofting and Vargheim-Kjerre. It is by far the largest area both in population and acre of land, especially compared to Kofting, but as you can see Kofting is much more densely populated. Only the regional Vargheim-Kjerre is larger than Follduland in this eastern part of greater Kongshavn, but as they are two different counties and Follduland is one, they cannot really be compared.
First off I'll post the regional map you have seen from the 1'st page, and then I'll size it down, and show you what the new areas look like. This update will, as explained before, not include much talk about planning, or how it might change in the future. That would spoil the fun, right? ;)
This is the greater Kongshavn area regional map.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg99.imageshack.us%2Fimg99%2F2726%2Fkhvnnamesow2qp2.jpg&hash=d44725cf83331168e4901646300db409975ae73f)
This shows the area in which we are operating at the moment, I will use the area squared in as reference on the other images.

Well, thats all I have time for today, have to grab some food. Hope you like what I have done with the place!

Awesome update , great region i like how your small city melts into the country side like butter on hot toast! &apls :)
Nicely done - an appealing region &apls
Fields and rural areas looks beautiful ;)
Very, very nice, I like espacilay your fields, they look great from regionla view.
REPLIES!
Nexis: Oooh, me like me some butter n toast ;). Thanks man, I try to make my regions feel as natural as possible. They are of course more inspired by scandinavian planning, than what you would see in america or asia.
Schulmanator: Thanks! As appealing as it might be some places, it can also be quite gritty and dirty in others. Just wait and see!
Kbieniu7: naww, gosh thanks! If you look closely enough though, you'll find that farms in Kofting actually had to be plopped, compared to the other regions. That took some time! :(
Feroxx: Hey there! Thank you very, very much! I try to make the crossover from regions as smooth as possible.
take care,
This looks very realistic, and..very norwegian :)
That's really very good MD! &apls
Your regional views are fantastic! Field shapes are very realistic, and the way you place trees is excellent
Transit networks look very well on regional views, but maybe some smooth curves here and there could be used too?... :) It would improve closeups greatly, and you have enough space, especially outside of cities to use them.
Very good work!
Adam
Some quick replies:
Metasmurf: Thanks, and yes it does... or personally I would say it looks very: Scandinavian. Sure my way of planning is very influenced by the fact that I am from Norway, but I have lived in other countries aswell, one of them being Germany. Personally I believe my methods of planning rural areas and farm areas are just as German/Swedish as they can look Norwegian.
also, the term Norwegian can be very decieving, as there is a lot of different ways of building and planning areas in Norway. This is because Norway was developed from all sides of the country, some parts earlier than other, and some parts have not even fully developed yet (structurally wise as urban areas, or farm lands). Most of the Norwegian farm land lies in eastern Norway, and looks very similar to the farms you'll find in Sweden. Though farms in southern and western Norway are often totally different because of the difference in climate and terrain. :)
Ennedi: thanks, and yes as I have said: as I am uploading pictures to sc4D for my MD and show them here does not mean that I won't go back to that area at a later point and change it. The very subject of this MD is to plan changes and put them to test in an area that has already been built upon, urban or not...
Also I am no wizard when it comes to the RHW or the NAM, and now that there are some extras in the newest edition of the NAM I'll have to update some roads, especially roads without good curves, or any other unnatural form.
EDIT:
Small update:

take care,
I guess you have big traffic on those small streets :P And I think you should use RHW curves sometimes ;)
Very nice MD so far. I really like the small downtown feeling in that first picture. Though in the 3rd picture it might be a good idea to use the RHW smooth curves and reduce it to just one bend there becuase ,well RL-wise, the more curves on the highway the more speed and safety is lost.
To Kbieniu7 and just_a_guy like I just said to Ennedi, this MD is about how I'll improve upon areas that are already built. So I will have to build up the rest of the region, THEN I'll start improving upon the cities and rural areas (roads, power, water, everything...). I also said this at the start of the MD.
About the curves, like I've said, I'm doing it. I just don't have that much time atm.
,take care

This is very good idea Exile! Personally I'm going to make a tour around my region twice: building it and then looking again at every city and improving them. This is very interesting for the player himself, he learns a lot of new things building next cities, and if he returns to the first one, he looks at it in a very different way (at least it happens to me ;))
It would be very good if you would show in future some places "before" and "after", with a short explanation why did you changed particular things
Adam
Your forests and fields look fantastic
That are two wonderful set of pictures there! Nice work on that area... ;)
The overviews are great!
