The territory of Hong Kong can be divided into three distinct parts:
* The island of Hong Kong (acquired by the UK in 1842)
* The mainland of Kowloon south of Boundary Street (acquired by the UK in 1860,
along with former Stonecutters Island, today united the continent).
* New Territories, including the island of Lantau (leased for a period of 99 years in 1899).
• For most of the twentieth century, the New Territories, very mountainous, very little remained inhabited,
partly due to the uncertainty is cernía on its future status. Once it became known that the UK would return
to China throughout Hong Kong, and not just the portion leased to which it was forced, the population
began to grow in the New Territories. Currently a little over 50% of the total population of Hong Kong
lies in the New Territorie •

|| Tsing Ma Bridge ||
• Tsing Ma Bridge is a bridge in Hong Kong, China. It is the world's seventh longest span suspension bridge.
The bridge was named after two of the islands in Hong Kong, namely Tsing Yi and Ma Wan. It has two decks
and carries both road and rail traffic, which also makes it the largest suspension bridge of this type.
The bridge has a main span of 1377 metres (4518 ft) and a height of 206 metres (676 ft).
The span is the largest of all bridges in the world carrying rail traffic •
• The 41 metres (135 ft) wide bridge deck carries six lanes of automobile traffic, with three lanes in each direction.
The lower level contains two rail tracks. There are also two carriageways on the sheltered lower deck for maintenance
access and as backup for traffic when particularly severe typhoons strike Hong Kong. Though road traffic would need
to be closed in that case, trains could still get through in either direction •

|| History ||
• Construction of the bridge was carried out by a Costain / Mitsui / Trafalgar House joint venture .
Construction work of the bridge began in May 1992 and ended in May 1997. It cost HK $ 7.2 billion.
The Lantau Link, of which the bridge is an integral part, was opened on April 27, 1997.
The ceremony was inaugurated by the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher •

|| Operation ||
• The Tsing Ma Bridge links Tsing Yi Island on the east to Ma Wan island on the west over Ma Wan Channel.
It is part of the Lantau Link, which, with two long span bridges links the New Territories and Lantau Island,
and eventually leads to the Hong Kong International Airport on Chek Lap Kok via North Lantau Highway.
The other bridge is the Kap Shui Mun Bridge linking Ma Wan to Lantau Island over Kap Shui Mun.
The two bridges are connected by over Ma Wan Ma Wan Viaduct •
• The Tsing Ma Bridge has been an important gateway to Lantau Island. It will become part of the planned
Route 8 expressway, which will connect the Lantau Link, the West Kowloon expressway, Cheung Sha Wan and Shatin.
The rail line is part of MTR's Tung Chung Line and Airport Express •
• The bridge, together with other highway, bridge and tunnel connections in the area, are part of the Tsing Ma Control
Area under the Tsing Ma Control Area Ordinance (Cap. 498) in Hong Kong Law. The control area has been managed
by Tsing Ma Management Limited since opening. The control area's traffic management system was developed by
Delco Corporation of Toronto. Special regulations and by-laws are carried out in the area •
• Along with the Ting Kau Bridge and Kap Shui Mun Bridge, the bridge is closely monitored by the Wind and Structural
Health Monitoring System (WASHMS). Surveillance cameras are also installed over the bridge to record traffic conditions.
The video is available at the government website. [2] It is updated every two minutes •

|| Ma Wan island ||
• Ma Wan is an island of Hong Kong, located between Lantau Island and Tsing Yi Island. The island belongs to Tsuen Wan district.
It has an area of 0.96 sq km. It is today more well known as Island Park (a private housing estate on the island) •
• Two separate channels Ma Wan and other major islands. To the east is the Ma Wan Channel, separating it from Tsing Yi Island,
to the South West is Kap Shui Mun, separating it from Lantau Island. The north is opposite seafront Tsing Lung Tau on the
mainland New Territories. The South is facing Tang Lung Chau island •
• Ma Wan Tung Wan Beach is located on the island •
• Temples of the goddess Tin Hau are found on the island. One has been rebuilt on the northern beach and was originately built
by the local pirate Cheung Po Tsai, who often looked after the locals. Another one is located at the old Tin Liu village site •
• The prehistoric island had late neolithic inhabitants as proved by recent excavations. There were also inhabitants here during
the Han Dynasty. More recently in the last 250 years it was a small fishing village named Liu Tin, only accessible by boats or ferries.
It was founded by a family from Chan Tsing Yi island. As part of the Hong Kong Government's Rose Garden plan, the Lantau Link was
constructed in the mid-1990s to connect the new Hong Kong International Airport to the city centre. The highway link was to pass through
Ma Wan, and plans to develop the island began to emerge. Today, a large part of the island is occupied by the Island Park apartment complex.
A theme park, named Ma Wan Park was proposed to accompany the housing project, and the first phase was opened on July 1, 2007 •

I like the walkways between the buildings and the marketplace and sunken plaza. I wonder what the airport type building in the 3rd picture could be? You have double-decker trams too. Where did you get those?
I...I... I just don't know what to say. I'm speachless. :-[

- The Staff
kelis- Wow! I have to admit, I had only glanced at HGKG until catching wind of the buzz this month when the staff was discussing OSITM picks. I've now spent a very enjoyable 20 minutes or so looking at your pics and fine presentation and acknowledge that the situation was my loss. You have something really eye-catching going here, but what is really enjoyable is taking the time to scope out the nifty levels of detail that you use to build this incredibly urbanized area. I'm now a certified fan.
Good luck!
David
Congratulations, kelis, and best of luck with your month in the spotlight! I really like your most recent update - colorful and well laid out. I'm especially impressed by the buildings you use. Any chance they're available to the public?
Hope you enjoy your time in OSITM - I'm sure we will...
Joan
You've got some great work on show here Kelis. I think Hong Kong will have a very successful month in OSITM, so enjoy it!!

completed in August 1995. The building surpassed the Bank of China Tower as the tallest building in

• Central Plaza was also the tallest reinforced concrete building in the world, until it was surpassed by CITIC Plaza,
Guangzhou. The building uses a triangular floor plan. On the top of the tower is a four-bar neon clock that indicates
the time by displaying different colors in 15 minute intervals, blinking at the change of the quarter •

• Central Plaza is made up of two main components: a free standing 368 m (1207 ft) high office tower and a 30.5 m (100 ft) high
podium block attached to it. The tower is made up of three sections, to 30.5 m (100 ft) high tower base forming the main entrance
and public circulation spaces, to 235.4 m (772 ft) tall tower body containing 57 office floors, skylobby mechanical plant and five floors
and the tower top consist of six floors and mechanical plant to 102 m (335 ft) tall tower mast •
• The ground level public area together with the public sitting out area forming an 8400 sq metres (90400 sq ft) landscaped garden
with richly ornate fountain, trees and artificial stone paving dedicated for public enjoyment. No commercial element is included in t

Exhibition Center and the China Resource Building. By turning these space to public use, the building got 20% more as bonus plot ratio.

Congrtulations kelis on getting your fantastic Md into the OSITM, very well deserved.
I really enjoy going over your past updates. There is just so many small details to look at and find, some of them I will be using in the very near future in my own MD. It will be interesting to see if anyone else notices.
Anyways, I hope to see alot of Special and Interesting things from you this month. I can really see you moving to the next level very easily. ;)
I look forward to your next update,

Tai O is a fishing town, partly located on an island of the same name,
on the western side of Lantau Island in Hong Kong.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg105.imageshack.us%2Fimg105%2F6158%2Ftaio2cu9.jpg&hash=f5d94c633b8c8ba4f3153f671e7f411900942890)
• On the main part of Lantau, a river splits to the north and west and at this
fork lies the island referred to as Tai O. Two pedestrian bridges cross the
river on its northern and western forks. The village is located mostly on the
banks of the river. The western and northern parts of the island facing the
South China Sea are uninhabited •
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg114.imageshack.us%2Fimg114%2F3486%2Ftaioeg5.jpg&hash=d81e3a79d607fbbbd1c4bfa4740d3e660c2da7b8)
• Also known as the "Venice of Hong Kong", Tai O is also a hot tourist spot for
both foreigners and residents of other parts of Hong Kong, despite damage
by a fire in July 2000. The pang uk, a kind of stilt house, built right over the
waterway are still quite scenic. A rope bridge tended by local women used
to be quite popular with visitors, but it has been replaced with a steel pedestrian bridge •
• The traditional salted fish and shrimp paste and storefronts at Tai O. For a small fee,
some residents will take tourists out on their boats along the river and for short jaunts
into the sea. Many tourists come to Tai O specifically to take these trips to see Chinese
white dolphins. It is also a good place to see the sunset •
Good job on the village, kelis, and the backstory is especially interesting. You certainly have done your homework. You continue to amaze with your attention to detail. These two photos contain so many interesting elements, I forget I'm looking at in-game shots! That's an interesting banner, too - I'm guessing it's a RL photo, but not completely sure! ;)
Looking forward to seeing more of your work...

Hey Kelis,
Great updates here. Many people just cram skyscrapers into their CBD's and the result is not always great. But your work here shows that it is well planned and that there is some kind of sense to the placement of all those tall buildings.
And then the contrast with Tai O shows that you are great at more rural/village type environments as well.
Great stuff, I am very impressed.

• The Clock Tower is a landmark in Hong Kong. It is located on the southern shore of Tsim
Sha Tsui, Kowloon. It is the only remnant of the original site of the former Kowloon Station
on the Kowloon-Canton Railway. Officially named Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower ,
it is usually referred to as the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower for its location •

• Built out of red bricks and granite, the Clock Tower peaks at 44 metres, and is topped by a 7-metre
lightning rod. The top of the tower can be reached by a wooden staircase located within. The interior of
Clock Tower had previously been open for visit, but is currently closed for maintenance. The clock tower
is located near Victoria Harbour at the foot of Salisbury Road. Another landmark, the Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier,
is located nearby •

• The plan of Kowloon-Canton Railway was realised in 1904 with its terminus in Tsim Sha Tsui.
The railway was inaugurated on 1 October 1910; however, construction of the station did not
begin until 1913. Because of World War I, the British materials required for the construction
could not be shipped on time, and construction was halted for some time. The part of the station,
together with Clock Tower, was completed in 1915, and the whole station 28 March 1916 •
• The Clock Tower reused the clock from the demolished Pedder Street Clock Tower. However,
only one side had a clock, and it was not until 1920 that the remaining three sides of the Clock Tower
were installed. They began operation in the afternoon of 22 March 1921, and have run ever since except
during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II •

simply perfect update here Kelis wow!!!
Did you make those overhanging street signs? They look great; I actually made a similar set-up myself about two weeks ago. I just made a set of transit enabled lots and added overhanging signs to them, but it's a pity that they always get cut off by the other models though.
Very nice update, it really resembles Kowloon well, the only thing that's missing is the peninsular hotel... one of us needs to make that! :D Great job!

~ Hong Kong is frequently described as a place where East meets West,
reflecting the culture's mix of the territory's Chinese roots with the culture
brought to it during its time as a British colony. Although over a decade has
passed since the handover, Western cultural practises remain, and coexists
seamlessly with the traditional philosophy and practices of Chinese culture ~

~ One of the more contradictions notice is Hong Kong's balancing of a modernized
way of life with traditional Chinese Superstitious Practice. Concepts like Fung shui
are taken very seriously, with expensive construction projects often hiring expert consultants,
and are often believed to make or break a business. Other objects like bagua mirrors are
still regularly used to deflect evil spirits, and buildings often lack any floor number that has
a 4 in it, due to its Similarity to the word for "die" in the Chinese language. The fusion of east
and west also characterises Hong Kong's cuisine, where da dim sum or been so restaurants
can be found next to fast food joints ~

~ While Hong Kong is a recognized global center of trade, its most famous export
is its entertainment industry, particularly in the martial arts genre which gained a
high level of popularity in the late 1960s and 1970s. Several Hollywood performers
have originated from Hong Kong cinema, notably Bruce Lee, Chow Yun-Fat, and Jackie Chan.
A number of Hong Kong filmmakers have also achieved widespread fame in Hollywood,
such as John Woo, Wong Kar-wai and Tsui Hark. Homegrown films such as Chungking Express,
Infernal Affairs, Shaolin Soccer, Rumble in the Bronx, and In the Mood for Love have gained
international recognition. Hong Kong is also the world's main center for Cantopop music,
which draws its influence from other forms of Chinese music, and more international styles
including jazz, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, electronic music, western pop music and others,
and you have to Fanbad multinational ~

~ The Hong Kong government supports cultural institutions such as the Hong Kong Heritage Museum,
the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and the Hong Kong
Philharmonic Orchestra. Also, the government's Leisure and Cultural Services Department also
sponsors Subsidized and international performers brought to Hong Kong. Many international cultural
activities are organized by the government, Consulates, and privately ~

• The Kowloon Park is a large public park in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon Peninsula,
Hong Kong. The park is managed by Leisure and Cultural Services Department. •

|| History ||
• The park was formerly a site of Whitfield Camp barracks for British force
with a battery(Kowloon West Battery II) on its west side. In 1970,
Urban Council redeveloped the site into the Kowloon Park.[1] Part of the site
was occupied in the construction of the MTR from 1975 - 1978. •

|| "Golden Mile" controversy ||
• The Government was criticised when the Executive Council approved plans in 1982
for a strip of retail premises fronting Nathan Road to be carved into the hill of Kowloon Park.
The move was first proposed when the Barracks were converted into public open space in 1970,
and ignited some controversy. It was opposed by the Urban Council, as well as the moslem community,
whose mosque was close by[2]. The rights for the development of the 5,410 sq metre strip were sold
in February 1983 to a subsidiary of New World Development for $218 million •

|| Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre ||
• Blocks S61 and S62 of former Whitfield Camp are "Grade III historical buildings" which were constructed
in circa 1910. They are a pair of identical two storied colonial military barrack blocks. The roofs are
pitched with Chinese tiles with tar finish. They housed the former Hong Kong Museum of History from
1983 to 1998 before the completion of the present Hong Kong Museum of History at Chatham Road South.
An extension block linking the two historical barracks was constructed in the 1980s to provide more
space for the museum facilities. It now houses the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre •

• Olympic is a station on the Tung Chung Line of Hong Kong's MTR. The livery is dodger blue •
• The station was originally named Tai Kok Tsui in proposals outlined by the government in the Airport Core
Programme during the 1990s.[1] In 1996, however, with Lee Lai Shan won the first ever Olympic gold medal of
Hong Kong in the event windsurfing of Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics and two Hong Kong sportsmen,
Cheung Yiu Cheung and Chiu Chung Lun, also won Gold medals in Paralympic Games of the same year, the
(then under-construction) station was renamed Olympic on 16 December 1996, paying tribute to those achievements
of Hong Kong athletes. The station is decorated with the pictures of 1996 Summer Olympics and is named after
the Olympic Movement •

~ Tian Tan Buddha, also known as the Big Buddha, is a large bronze statue of the Buddha,
completed in 1993 and located at Ngong Ping, Lantau Island in Hong Kong. The statue is
located near Po Lin Monastery and symbolizes the harmonious relationship between man and
nature, people and religion. It is a major center of Buddhism in Hong Kong, and is also a popular
tourist attraction ||

~ The statue is named Tian Tan Buddha because its base is a model of the Altar of Heaven
or Earthly Mount of Tian Tan, the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. It is one of the five large Buddha
statues in China. The SITS Buddha statue on a lotus throne on top of a three-platform altar.
It is surrounded by eight smaller bronze statues representing gods or Immortals.

tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha prior to 2007. It reputedly can even be seen from as far away as

Kennedy Town is at the western end of the Sai Wan on Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong.
It is part of the Victoria City. It is named after Arthur Edward Kennedy, who was the 7th
Governor of Hong Kong from 1872 to 1877.
In the division of District Council of Hong Kong, the area roughly corresponds to the areas
of constituency Kennedy Town and Mount Davis and Kwun Lung in the Central and Western District.
The neighborhood is primarily Chinese.

Kennedy Town is the western terminus of the Hong Kong Tramways. In summer 2005,
the ExCo approved the extension of the MTR Island Line of the Through The Belcher's
with a stop in Kennedy Town. The travel time to Causeway Bay is estimated to be 12
minutes approximately eleven completed in 2014.

The Kennedy Town at www.dacasa.hk Online Neighborhood / kennedytown is an English only
forum for expatriate residents of Kennedy Town - it provides additional information on the area,
and specific topics close to the heart of its expatriate residents.
Kennedy Town is an expanding and changing area with many settling in new businesses.

Kennedy Town is the western part of early development of Victoria City, the capital of colonial Hong Kong.
Due to its remoteness from the center of the city and without mass transit, the town development is not as
vigorous as other part of urban Hong Kong. It is expected to change when MTR extends to the area.

Wow, fantastic! Not that I don't love skyscrapers but I love this area of the city even more. The tightly-packed houses and the small boats on the water are great.
Eh, in H-K, the small towns are composed of skyscrapers ! ?=mad)= Nicely done my friend, the little fisherman wharf looks excellent. Great mix of buildings.

~ Fruit Market , also known as Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market , is a wholesale fruit market in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon,
Hong Kong. The market was founded in 1913 between Ferry Street, Waterloo Road and Reclamation Street
Shek Lung Street without passing through it ~
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg189.imageshack.us%2Fimg189%2F8388%2Funop.jpg&hash=4221548eea0ec1a8089bd4daa14a579f1a7ea894)
~ Historically the market is a valuable site. It consists of several blocks of one or two storey stone
buildings. Pre-World War II are signboards on the outer walls of the buildings. The market was
officially known as Kowloon Wholesale Fruit Market until the name was transferred to Cheung
Sha Wan Wholesale Market Complex in Cheung Sha Wan in 1990, however, still many wholesalers
operate in the market. The busiest hours are 4 to 6 o'clock in the morning. Lorries and deliver boxes
of fruit carts in and out of the market ~

that looks great! amazing. &apls
Very impressive. That section of residential towers looks very nice and authentic for HK.
I need to stop lurking long enough to let you know that you've had two superb updates. The fruit market has probably been one of my favorite series of pics yet in your MD. The crowded streets, sidewalks, and alley(s) adds a nice ambience to the whole scene.
That urban area looks amazing! Those towers are fantastic, and you've used them very effectively!
As Battlecat said, your urban areas are fantastic! I really like that rail line, as well. Great work!
This is amazing! :o Impressive.
The last one is :o.
All are :o. But the last one is even more....
I really love this MD it really captures Hong Kong in it's glory and magnificence and i can't wait for more :D
JohnD and SAm Johnson over at the German simforum were looking for two buildings and asked me if I could work as a translator. Good thing about this I discvered your MD! :)
I haven't been in HongKong but this is how I think it must look - and feel - like. Great work! &apls
The two buildings are in the last picture of the Fruit Market update on the last page:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg20.imageshack.us%2Fimg20%2F4475%2Ftresp.jpg&hash=5fb26271310032489be137e7c05b09b19a4cb9f2)
SAm Johnson is looking for the buildings at the pedestrian malls with the red, green and brown roofs in the top left corner. JohnD is looking for the highrise in the lower right corner.
Hope you can help thenm.
And keep up your great work!
Bernhard
The Buildings with the red, green brown roofs can be found on Simtropolis search "Dong He Night Market" as for the Highrise on the right there isn't but if you mean the left it's 8 Waterloo Road by Bixel and is on th STEX
Hope this helps :)
You're righ - it's the lower left corner ... :-[
Anyway: Thank You Very Much for the fast answer! :)
Bernhard
