Title: Some American Football fields
Post by: Chrisadams3997 on September 28, 2007, 11:20:48 AM
Sorry RRP fans, but I'm taking a few days off to finished up an old project and try to get it released.  Some of yall might have seen some of it floating around between some of my and Travis's posts over the last several weeks.  Or you might have even seen the original posts back in March or so ::) on ST... So here's a teaser of the latest work on it ;D

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg408.imageshack.us%2Fimg408%2F5075%2Fsoccertexturecomparisonrj4.jpg&hash=4cafb841288e2fbf802bca8345c35aa0b32d86ba)

Maybe I'll fill yall in on the rest tomorrow.
(Or you could just look at the LEX Candidacy board)

You are my new favorite person. :D First the Rural Renewal Project, and now this. I've seen the other football fields in the LEX Candidacy Board and they look great. Now my high schools will look more complete (since I used urbanlegend's football field in every high school and it looks so repetitive).

Fields look good. I've always said SC4 could use more middle/high school style football fields  My one question though is if the football field itself is a texture or a BAT?

Thanks guys, lots of work put into them.

Well in full tradition of a Bat projects thread, they are indeed bat's, but in no more sense than a ploppable water tile is, as it's a rectagle with a UVW map applied, so the hard part is indeed the texturing.  I've chosen that approach for a few reasons.

In no particular order:

And thanks to oppacity maps, they are by no means restricted to squares:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg407.imageshack.us%2Fimg407%2F470%2Falbrietpreviewnewtracktem4.jpg&hash=0285b08c1bafb04ce03f25e86b4d248a9bce5bac)

I'll be using this thread primarily as a showcase for the fields themselves, as some of these I will not even be producing lots for(though Travis will be using a couple of them in the near future :).)  Some time next week I'll be releasing a prop pack with a variety of fields, as well as some stands, Goal posts, pylons, etc. for me and Travis's lots as well as any other lotters that would like to use them.  That said, it doesn't take much for me to put together new textures on a field, so if anyone would like to request anything in particular, just show some RL source pics along with any other explanation(wording in endzones, endzone color, etc.) and I can make the texture.  Anyway, here's some that have made recently:

This are a couple Travis requested:
Based closely off the old Nomad field from the Stex

This was his original(just the field, not the rest of the lot):

And one more thing, a Press Box for the bleachers I'm working on:

Kyle: I think the proper term is 'finally working on again' instead of 'still working on' :D.  But thier coming out this time :).

skyliner:  my public school had a larger stadium than that and a rubber track, but it probably depends on how large the school is too.  We had about 1,000 students, so.

And just for you, maybe if it did have a rubber track, it might have looked more like this one :P:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg217.imageshack.us%2Fimg217%2F2923%2Fdirtypreviewyp9.jpg&hash=8321d334cdb75a67ea2c92070c0c3b1df541c367)

People who saw the old posts on ST might remember this one, though I've finished it now and got it ready to render.

Our school has about 2000 kids but most schools in the innercity school district like mine is SFUSD, lack the  proper fields as were pretty broke. We have a dirt track and old bleachers. So when we practice for track, we have to commute to an arts school that has a track about a few miles away because they dont use it. Strangely enough it was the worst school in district but it was the only one with a rubber track! But when we face those suburban schools, we dont stand a chance!

Oh yeah, one of the schools, Burton got a rubber track and astro turf field because apparently, the 49ers donated money to the school for such things. I think its because it is close to the stadium.

Just to show my lots in action here and how the fields look alongside each other.  My lots will use the two textures seen here, both with normal and a dual purpose markings(to make 4 different possible fields) in prop families.  This also shows the new press box from a few angles, I kind of like how it came out, and it will appear randomly on these lots.

eh..thats the only thing i dislike about massachusetts. In texas or calafornia, or pennsylvania, if someone throws 30 touchdowns, they are automatically in a D1 school. In massachusetts, if you do really really good you might get into BC, but thats it as far as D1 schools go. course BCs lookin pretty good right now, eh? and then at the games in texas, everyones glued to the game in the stands. at my schools game last night, there were a 1000 plus people there, and maybe 400 of them actually watched the game, everyone else just did other stuff like play football and socialize. In fact i bet half the people there probably didnt know the final score.

Just a little update here, but I'm slowly getting more of these actually ingame and that's got me excited.  I've tweaked one the textures(the original one) to fit in a little better(the markings in particular are toned down considerably and the color's had some blue added to it) and added another that's basically a neutral version of the TG field to the prop family for my lots.

I really, really want your football fields, Chris. I'm starting on a scale recreation of Jackson, MS and its the most popular game by far around these parts.

Heck, football is like a religion in the Mid-South, Pat Riot. My college has 1000 students and at our last home game we had 2200 fans fill the small stadium. Nearby is Jackson State University's field, a university of 20,000 students or so, and they are at standing room only in a 60,000 capacity field right now. That's why I'm home today-I don't like fighting the traffic.  :D

Cheers,
Kevin

lol, that's impressive, three times the student population, and you know not all the students go to all the games.  At Texas A&M we have some (guestimate here) 45K students and will typically get crowds in the 80,000's though it's been above 90,000 if I'm not mistaken, but that's still only twice the student population.

Anyway, here's what I've been tinkering around with for another track and field, close up shot ;D

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg170.imageshack.us%2Fimg170%2F2005%2Forangetj7.jpg&hash=70780ec0d440cd9b4b3ff9adf8fdb2ba61b43c01)

I think the colors compliment each other quite nice.  spent an hour just tinkering with the orange track to get it just right.

Part right. Soccer fields range from 90-120 meters long.
Title: Re: Some American Football fields
Post by: Chrisadams3997 on September 29, 2007, 07:47:09 PM
Heh, underscaled is an understatement.  Those who've looked at the lots I'm making over in the candidacy thread might know I'm making the basic fields in two size, one on a 5x3 footprint to match the maxis fields.  My field for that lot is 74x42 meters or about 81x46 yards.  That's about 2/3 of the actually length of a football field(120x53.333 yards or about 109.7x49 meters,) and it's still larger than the Maxis field.

Even my larger 'RL scale' fields aren't actually full sized, as they are 100 yards in length, but the full width(92x49 meters), .  In Maxis's defense, fields that are properly sized actually come out looking way too long because of the perspective you see it from.  Same kind of principle why buildings have to be made taller than they actually are to look right.  But they still fudged big time of the length.

Yep, it's a double post, but I really wanted to share a few new pics.  I'm all but done at this point(last render is half way done as I speak , then redo a few Ltexts, and readme's %wrd), so here's some, well, almost finalized pictures of my lot's I've put together.  Any criticism is quite welcome and encouraged ;).

These three are a prop family on one lot.

So realistic you can smell the nachos and porta potties!

I was in band in high school and loved going to games and things like that, even though I really don't like football to be honest...

Its funny, there is just something cool about that time of year and seeing parts of your state you would never ever go to normally. When else do you get to have rock thrown at you in SW Dallas? Or sit next to your girlfriend on a broken down bus stuck between Sweetwater and Brownwood at 2 am which is out in the middle of f'ing nowhere

Nice update - the additional work was definitely worth the effort! I'll probably use only one of two of those, since I tend to create more European-looking cities, but they're a more than welcome addition to the game. :)

Title: Re: Some American Football fields
Post by: Chrisadams3997 on October 01, 2007, 01:39:42 PM
lol, I've told you football is big in Texas.  The size is no exaggeration, it's based very closely on the shape and size of Bryan High's football stadium:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg218.imageshack.us%2Fimg218%2F5633%2Fbryanhighfbstadiumoa0.jpg&hash=43624f4e12a5736cbabc7275d410fa1d52e2e584)

Although it actually sits on earthen embankments(the ring you see on the NW side of the field is a continuation of that) instead of having a structure underneath like Albriet.  The inspiration for that came from this pic:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg218.imageshack.us%2Fimg218%2F8999%2Fstadiumback1yx7.jpg&hash=8dd971d46dc6a8c7c46efd2ae26c0ac2fd1e8d50)

Don't even know what or where it's from, but I liked the architecture and style, though I certainly modified it considerably :).

No joke.  :P A whopping 30 seat capacity.  :D That is, if you can even see the 3 10-seat bleachers...

Is it a bird, a plane.... oh, yea, so Houma, LA(where I actually went to high school) seems to be the last place in the continental US were you can't spot a fly on a cow's a** with google maps ???.  That's as close as you can get, which frustrates me greatly because we actually have a nice concrete stadium, similair in size to Albriet as well, but I don't have any pictures of it.  If you look in between the arrows you can see the outline of the track however...  :D

I'll actually be down there next weekend though, so I'm going to try to get some pictures of it.

Travis:  How big of a school?

XiahouDun:  hmm, that wouldn't be that hard to do....

alright I minus well share.

Heres my schools- the importance of high school football is nowhere near that of texas/penn, but games are still a pretty big social event.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg405.imageshack.us%2Fimg405%2F8981%2F42037073ir4.jpg&hash=670313cc33015e6effc1a33421bdf075d328b23b)
Notice how tiny the bleachers are? there are also some small ones on the other side, barely visible. we do have a good snack bar, and a lot of standing room and room to play football. idk what that building in the back is, its like storage/lockers/ and the scoreboard.

And whats with all these small fields? ??? The middle school is directly across the street from the high school.

Pat riot:  I'm curious, what are the circular markings near the end zones?
and I guess I'll have to render a smaller version of my bleachers... ;D

I'm really suprised to see just how little markings a lot of these have, and that some don't even seem to be marked to all.  Guess I've been around college ball for too long. :)  These could get worked into some new fields.  Do these fields have number markings on them or not?  If so, where and how big.

The images of my area were taken around spring time, so no on field practices yet (thus no need for lines), and Track and Field uses the fields at that time. Neither field has numbers though, and they leave the endzones plain (except in the regional championship game if Penn makes it, then there is gold paint in the endzone).

chrisadams-that was actually when the feild was being used for soccer. I don't know how they do it, but they somehow manage to make the soccer lines dissapear for friday nights, even though they are in the same season.  As for the numbers, im not exactly sure, but most of the feilds round here don't have numbers, instead they have orange markers on the 10,20,30 etc. o and alot of our feilds don't have entrances or facades like the one you showed, they are just stands that you can walk under with a press box on top.  Amazing how different high school football can be  :P

edit: wow that looks fantastic! you even got the crappy caretaking down :p

lol, crappy caretaking is my specialty, you should see my apartment.

That's some good information on the numbers and such.  I think I'll get around to making these into a second set of fields for the 'less developed' football programs.

Here's just the same quick dealing with XiahouDun's field(the first one)

Looks good, though why not make the first one I posted have whiter lines and the second one have the faded? I had to snicker at the less developed idea, even though Penn hasn't lost in their conference (NIC) in over 20 years. I know what you mean, still found it humorous though :D Anyways, fields look very real like the textures are taken straight from the pictures

Here's another stadium that shows you how big football is here in Texas:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi6.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy228%2FDFire870%2Fpalace1.jpg&hash=97121d41e1682ff099df66fd7720a3be21031af8)

This stadium was built a few years ago by the local school district, which has 4 high schools. Before this stadium was built, the only official field to play football on was the field at my high school. All 4 schools had to share that stadium, so occasionally my high school would be the visiting team... on our own turf! This new stadium is affectionately called "The Palace", and it's not located on any high school campus, or even within walking distance. I personally haven't been to it, but I heard it's nice (also, you can see that the seating makes a bowl, which is unique for a high school stadium, so every seat can see the 50-yard line).

It was a VERY expensive stadium too, thus the nickname.

Xiahoudun:  That's a good idea with the lines, and it'll give me three fields(which seems to be my magic number) to work off of.  I'll just need to set up the track and fields for each of them, then I'll have an additional set all done.  Then perhaps someone could lot them for me ;cough;Travis;cough; ;)

Quotefields look very real like the textures are taken straight from the pictures

Can't imagine why they'd look like that ::) ;)

Travis:  Wow, we had 1000 students, but still have a pretty big stadium.  And that was Louisiana, not even Texas.  Though we did have the largest one in our Parish(what they call their counties.)

DFire:  WOW, that thing is nuts for a high school stadium, even if several of them are using it.  I'm going to have to make yall stop posting pictures, I might never get back to the RRP :D  Any of yall interested in learning to Bat stadiums ;D

Yeah, it's gigantic. A lot of people in the school district's taxing area were a bit mad that so much money was used to build such a nice stadium, but meh. And the stadium is used for other things than just high school football games... The Austin Wranglers (Arena Football) use it for training sometimes.

I would post my high school's stadium, but it's nothing spectacular, especially compared to The Palace. :P

And Filasimo, no, the one in The Longest Yard is in California.

Go figure. Our school is way more basketball-oriented anyway, and I guess they figured they wouldn't need to provide much seating for the football field- our team is worst in the county, haven't won a game in 3 years. That's one of the reasons I didn't join the team.  :P

So the first thing I says to myself when I saw you're picture was "ooo, is that a dirt track," and I still don't know if it is, but I went on google images anyway and found some pics and was wondering if anyone knew just how representative they are, so, uh, here they are:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg219.imageshack.us%2Fimg219%2F7906%2Fdirttrack2fv4.jpg&hash=a2a08074c5d6a310d877798b3eccc53ae4771217)

I particularly like this one.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg219.imageshack.us%2Fimg219%2F9086%2Fdirttrack3ky2.jpg&hash=6dfd6516e1d0c21414a02356015d018e11cce624)

Looking at these it seems like doing a dirt track texture won't be as hard as I first imagined, so perhaps in the near future...

Oh yea, and here's a quick preview on that field.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg219.imageshack.us%2Fimg219%2F3496%2Fskylnerfieldfu2.jpg&hash=f908bf6f999d377d1060dad2e500e15fcb103746)

I might have to have a vote to see which fields make it and which don't in the near future if this keeps up ;)

Personally im loving your football fields is about damn time someone made some american football fields...I have more soccor fields then I know what to do with. However I have a suggestion since im really liking all of ur fields and dont wish to see any of them go the way of the dinosaur. Since your making all of them the same size(the actual inzone field) might I suggest you make the Tracks and  bleachers one lot with nothing in the middle and make the actual field modular? You know...you can use wheaver field you want for whatever track/bleacher set...in other words make the actual field just plops but the bleachers and the Track field be the park. That way you can make as many in-fields as you want and you could even make them for different sports as well. They do change the paint on the fields for different sports anyway. I'll even pitch in and make mmls for each of ur fields if you want that way you can have as many different fields as you want inside the lot

Thanks Robin, it's good to see you in here :)

And you too Pat , came up while I was typing.

SimNation:  hmm, that one's a toughie.  You're suggesting making the field ploppable 'flora' if I read that correctly, but I see a couple of problems with it.  first off, ploppables randomly rotate, so half the time when you're trying to place a field in the middle of the track lot, it will be turned the wrong way and you'll have to destroy the lot and start over, which is just a hassle and isn't something I would consider to meet the standards for an uploaded lot, as it has to be easy to use for everyone.  Also in that vein, exact control over placement of flora isn't exactly exact, if you get my drift, which means you could accidentally place it off center, resulting in having to destroy the lot and start over.  I think it would take some practice to really the hang of that, and I want people to just be able to select the lot and place it.

Also, a lot of track and fields have the infield grass very much like the field grass, and at any rate different from the surrounding area, which is something I'd like to capture with some of the fields, and would be impossible with this system.  While it's an interesting idea, I just think the it would be sloppy and difficult to work in actual game play.

I am making extensive use of prop families so that lots have a variety of fields, and to keep the number of lots down, while travis is making more individualized lots for them.  Of course at present the fields and tracks are all 'stuck together' you might say, though there hasn't been any extreme changes in how I approach the track and field layout thus far, so it's all just minor cosmetics.  What could be done is to have the track as one prop, with the field part empty, then a separate field prop family placed so different fields could appear with different tracks, but that gives little input from the user on what combination shows up.  I also don't want too much diversity within any lot, because it makes it very hard to get a specific combination if wanted by the user.  The only method to do that is to place the lot and bulldoze it until you get what you want(or go into lot editor and make your own lot with the props you want ;)), and thus I'm trying to keep the number of jmajor possibilities on any lot to 12 or less.

Well, that got long winded in a big hurry, last thing I wanted to show here was a comparison of the fields so far side by side.  They're all still 'rough drafts' in that minor changes to aspects of hue, saturation, and lightness could occur, but nothing major

Here's a comparison between the present fields(all in rough draft stage, slight changes to aspects of hue, saturation, and lightness could change, but not much)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg219.imageshack.us%2Fimg219%2F4736%2Fpickafieldnk5.jpg&hash=43a96f44aa155f7f63f37452a9c732ecc5ad6ce8)

Now I think I've got to go look at some Plaza Mall textures before Filasimo pulls the lash out on me.

This is what I meant...have the item marked as field in the picture be interchangeable. That way each one can have multiple ones inside them.By putting them in the actual park menu as well that way they can be MML'd And ppl could make some custom ones with there favorite teams on them if they wanted to. Or put there hs name on it or something. Either way ima do that with urs when you release them if im able to lol depends on if ur props for it gonna be one big one or different ones on one lot.

Bleachers could be placed on a separate lot so that they could be placed interchangeably.  Since the field sits inside of the track, even if I rendered tracks with no field in the middle, the only way to place a different field in the middle would be in lot editor since you couldn't place a lot with the field directly in the middle of a lot for the track.

But what about the way the roundabouts are done with the middle tiles being destructible to place a park or something? Couldn't an approach similar to that be used to change the fields?

Kitsune, I think roundabouts are an exception because they're transit networks. The only real way to do what was suggested would be to have the field be offset from the actual lot itself.

Kitsune:  Like Dfire pointed out, that's only for transit lots to my knowledge, and I'm really not convinced getting into such complicated schemes is necessary as these sets will have plenty of diversity as is compared to anything presently available.

Skyliner:  All four of those from this new set are natural grass, though pretty much any of them from my previous set that's pretty well completed(at least on the bat side of things) could be well representative of an astroturf field.  I'll definitely be working out a dirt track texture to set around a couple of these.

Dfire:  Thanks for pointing those things out.  I'd also realized you could offset the fields, though I'm not really entertaining the idea.  That's a lot more renders... and like I said, just don't see it being necessry, or practical since all of these fields will have rendered infields, getting it all to line up properly would be a nightmare.

Pat Riot: lol, now now, let's be nice...

Chris, if I were to prepare an overlay of a rugby field, any chance of getting some fields done for that?  There is one, which is the prettiest grass I have seen, deep green, not like 20 guys in boots have run on it.  :P

If it's too much hassel no worries, if not, let me know what size (in pixles) you need it.  I was thinking if I do a PNG with the markings you can overlay it over the grass?

Thanks alot everyone!  really appreciate it.

Diggis, it wouldn't be difficult at all, I've got everything set up with layers so I can just pull the football markings and place yours on the grass instead.  Just make sure that it's in a format where I can take the markings off of it easily to make into a layer(if you do a png, don't give it transparency, instead just set the markings against a darker background, preferably green.)  As for size, the width of the field should be about 600-620 pixels, and set the length according to the normal aspect ratio for a rugby field(I'm not familair with their dimensions myself, but it won't be hard to find ;D)  Actually I realize I need to take part of that back.  In my present textures, 160ft is equal to 620 pixels, so every foot(you'll have to convert from meters if it's in that) is 3.875 pixels, same thing for the length.  Keeping both in that same scale will keep the 'grain' of the grass the same.  After that it's just a matter of deciding which grass textures to put it on.

I won't be back on till Sunday evening at earliest, but I'll try to check in then.

thanks again everyone for your support, that what makes this worthwhile,
Chris

Cheers, I'm not sure about the width of a rugby field, can look it up easy enough, but it's 100m long from tryline to tryline.  I can't do anything till early next week, but will do white lines on a black backround so you can pull the lines out easy.

These look awesome, although shorter, "H" shaped goal posts would look better on Pat Riot's field (not sure if it would possible the way you're using random prop families though).

Yeah, the two fields that have the slight soccer field lines should have the H style goals (which are used for fields that split between the two sports).

Really? I've never seen H-shaped goal posts for fields that are used for both football and soccer... From what I've seen, during soccer season they put the soccer goal things in front of the football goal posts.
Title: Re: Some American Football fields
Post by: bwatterud on October 07, 2007, 09:54:35 AM
The main reason I mentioned the "H" shaped goal posts was because they are generally used on older or more rural( &ops) fields, like Pat Riot's really torn up field, and to a lesser extent XiaHouDun's field.  The new, shiny, tall goal posts scream "our school just spent 2 million renovating our football field," and look sort of out of place on a field that is torn up, like Pat Riot's.

There are 2 kind of H goalposts. The ones with the single crossbar are for like you mentioned, because they stand up to wind and stress better. The others have a double crossback, where the bottom bar is the top of the goal, and the top bar is the bottom of the field goal.

it's be perfectly possible since the field goal posts are not part of the field prop.  I've already considered making some 'H' field goal posts, but in the mean time JBSimio I believe made the one Travis is using on some lots.

What I've been thinking though, while we're talking these and prop families is a way to create prop families for the goal posts.  You couldn't just use them as individual pieces as you'd end up with one goal post on one side of a field, and another on the other.  Instead I would have to bat each set of two goal posts at each end of the field together, with a custom LOD probably to allow everything in between to show up properly, then set those as prop families.  The primarily limitation of course is it would only work for the length of field I do the bat for, so therefore I'm a bit turned off by this method.

As for which should be on it, unless I do the prop families for goal posts, my lots for these will focus on simplicity and thus use the present props, while others can lot in whatever goal posts they wish (unless there is overwhelming demand.)  With that in mind, my prop pack will include some normal 'H' posts for your lotting pleasure, and maybe even a few of those double crossbacks ;).

OK, rugby field done.  It's 70 wide by 100 +10-22m endzones.  (I have put two lines in the end zone, one at 10m from the try line, and one at 22) you need to delete one of these, and depending on the size of your fields can move the end line anywhere between them.  Hope this makes sense.

Basically the last line needs to be between the last two (and them erased) on this image.

Wow, you boys aren't playing around, that's a big field.  Had me double checking dimensions online :P.  Really great job on these markings Diggis, it's all well done and to scale.  Here's a quick and dirty preview where I've placed it on Pat Riot's field.  Just for fun, I've got one with 22 meter endzones, one with 10 meter ones, and a to-scale American football field on the side for comparison.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg47.imageshack.us%2Fimg47%2F7357%2Frugbypreviewlp3.jpg&hash=1189af6d614ccb13fda3d2c399b6ce1bdc2ef037)

The rugby markings are brighter than I'd actually render them on this field, but I did that just to show how they turned out, and it looks good.  For any textures you want done, just let me know what field(grass underneath), what size endzone, and some idea on how prominent to make the markings.  I can place this on any texture I've already got in 5 minutes, and if you get a satellite photo of a field, I can make that in 10-15 minutes these days.  Then I can send you the texture to use as you want.  That applies to anyone else as well :).

nice work, love it.

if possible is it too much hassel to remove the brown strip from the centre.  It occurs on American Football fields due to the large proportion of the game that occurs there, but that doesn't occur on rugby fields the same.  I would say have patches of brown around the field instead of a strip down the centre.

if it's too much hassel, don't sweat it as it still looks fantastic.
Title: Re: Some American Football fields
Post by: Chrisadams3997 on October 09, 2007, 09:41:25 AM
well, that was just placing it on one of the fields I'd already done.  The best approach would be some arial or satellite photos of worn rugby fields to use as an overlay like how I've done a number of the football fields.  Alas we don't have many in my area, so I'm not much sure where to look myself, but if you can find some good pics from google maps or google earth, etc., I could use that quite easily, or if you look through this thread, I've got pics of all the field textures I've made thus far and I can overlay it on any of those.

Post by: Chrisadams3997 on October 09, 2007, 07:40:44 PM
M:  Well, if yall should have noticed one thing, it's that I don't half a** anything.  In that vein, I closed the big pond for the second time ever(on google maps that is ;)) and started rooting around and found several rugby fields(turned out a lot easier to find one than I figured, they were everywhere.)  I've set markings onto a couple.  This was the first I found and had apparently been mowed perhaps shortly before the satallite photo was taken, hence the pattern of lines.  I'm not entirely satisfied with it, but it was the first I found, so it got done.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg398.imageshack.us%2Fimg398%2F9088%2Frugby01prevwkq6.jpg&hash=9deac16cd5821bcdb43efe22d84bcfe5190b6dae)

I'm much happier with the second one, not sure what the green strip at the top was, but it was right in front of one of the goal posts, so I left it.  It'd be easy to pull out though.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg398.imageshack.us%2Fimg398%2F3770%2Frugby02prevwng0.jpg&hash=619ff450771afe7d022b679f34b0e454c7accd24)

And the third, which is a much cleaner texture, but still interesing.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg398.imageshack.us%2Fimg398%2F1152%2Frugby03prevwiu2.jpg&hash=9a73521ab6b948ea3feae98d732d2377343c2ec9)

These are all very much in the vien of the type of American football fields I've been doing for the second set of them.  If yall'd like to see some more 'professional', astroturf type fields for it, I can do that as well.

Thundercrack:  glad you like it, I was little iffy myself.  Kinda waiting to see how it looks ingame to make any permanent decisions.

Skyliner:  I aim to please.  I take it the dirt track's pretty close to looking right to you as well?

I think it would look great for rural schools that may not have a whole lot of students or a great track team. There's a few high schools in my area like that. Hope it looks good in game, but I'm sure it will!

I think I like the third one best. Although the second one's markings in front of the goal post may be from a scrum machine? :P

Also, seeing that Rugby is a winter sport, the grass should (in theory) not be as luscious, but that doesn't mean it's not allowed to. :P There are, after all, four seasons.  :D

Well, since yall aren't entirely sure what it is, and I certainly have no idea, I'll remove it.  I've also got a new texture I'm replacing the first rugby texture with and I've got a fourth one I've already done.  I'll get a real update on that tomorrow.

As far as the football fields, I'm pretty much done with textures and renders, so here's some new pictures of the whole set.  Note the 'H' posts on the new fields, I'll put them on the new field and tracks too.

Thanks everyone, it's been a lot of work getting them where they are now.

Ennedi:  Those are my favorite too.  It's funny that they are so far from the scope of what I originally set about to do on this project, but they ended up coming out the best out of it in my opinion.  A good example of community involvement and feedback too :)

M: it's a possibility in the future, but since the size of the fields are different(significantly, going from about 50 meters wide for the football, to 70 meters for the rugby), I'd have to completely rework the track more or less, and I'm not even sure how places with tracks around rugby fields(haven't seen any examples yet) have it all shaped and scaled.

PatRiot:  Ah, Albriet, that's my baby.  And finally going to be released, after, er, umm, only 6 months ::)

Part of the University of Pretoria's Sport Grounds (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=-25.750942,28.248097&spn=0.002252,0.005021&t=k&z=18&om=1). Although it looks like the track is around the hockey field (right) and not the rugby field (center). The Cricket field is to the left.

Anyway, let me know if you need more examples.  ;D A standard athletics track, at least as I am used to it, in South Africa is 400m in circumference.

Well M, thanks for the examples.  Eventually I'll no doubt get around to that, especially once I make some decisions on scale for the basic field.

and thanks Robin :)

I decided that the aluminum stands I'd done for the previous fields wouldn't fit as well with the new, um, older ones, so I made some smaller, worn wooden ones for them.

Hayden: Well, there's no short answer to that question.  You can see the satallite photos that I've used for the worn fields if you look back through this thread.  Essentially I've taken those, rotated them as necessary and cropped out the part of the field I want to use.  From there I make two layers(I use Paint Shop Pro 7, but you should be able to do something similair in Photo Shop) that I place on top of my basic grass texture like what I've used in the non-worn fields.  One of the layers from the sat. photo I make a luminecesnce layer(it'll transfer the lightness values over-very important) and one as either a hue or color layer(depending on whether I want to transfer saturation or just hue).  From there there is a lot of adjusting of layer transparencies, hue's and lightnesses, contrast, and many other things I'm missing right now to get it just right.  Also many details that get lost in the satellite image(particularly for the track and fields) have to be added back in, and hues that bleed over from dark or light objects have to be removed.  Long story short, it takes a good bit of picture editing experience and a little tenacity.

The bleachers and the field look great, my friend! I've said it before, but outstanding work on this!

thundercrack:  and it's always appreciated

girlfromverona:  Thanks, I can't wait to see these start showing up in yall's regions.

Hayden_Grady:  nice guess.  The normal fields(with out track) are indeed 6x4, or more precisely I've rendered them at 91x49 meters.  I didn't use the full 120 yards(109.7meters) because it looked somewhat strecthed in the game view and was that much more disproportionate to the Maxis stuff.  I'm also realeasing a set(separately as I've got it presently planned) of the fields on 5x3 lots to match in with the Maxis fields if someone wishes(you can see pics of those in my last overview shot of all the fields, at the top of the pic.)

Also I wanted to say that if you or anyone else had more specific questions concerning how to work with field textures, you can PM me or post them here and I'll help out however I can, though I won't be able to give very specific advise in programs other than Paint Shop Pro 7.

Yes they have been released. They're on the LEX. If you do a power search and then select his username, Chrisadams3997, then you should be able to find these football fields. Hope that helps!
