Title: Sciurus' Factory
Post by: Sciurus on August 30, 2008, 06:26:34 AM
.:: Presentation

I'm specialized  in the fabrication of BATs from the "worker" style. I made buildings which are inpired of workerbuildings there are in my region, Longwy. Longwy was an industrial city, which producted steel, since the start of the XXth century. So the worker buildings were very developped in the region. But in 80's, it was the end of the steelindustries. So many workers went out the city, and today, many buildings are derelict.

Great project sciurus. I like the first house a lot. Small comment to make it look a bit nicer: imo the roof is a bit bare. maybe you can add some more details on it like some small vertical pipes for ventilation, a window or some solar panels or whatsoever to add some more life to the roof. Other than that I like the details on your building a lot :)

one thing to pay attention to, that is normally overlooked by BATers - thickness of the floors it can not possibly be this paper thin. give it minimum 35 cm or about 60 + for office towers  - remember all the stuff - like eclectic and comm wiring under the floor and AC under the ceiling...

PS
Adjust those numbers (35-65cm) by whatever multiplier you use to combat squashing effect (usually 1,25-1,3)

I like the little french house at the beginning of the thread.  About the only thing that bugs me about it, is the chimney.  Id really like to see it with an indent in it as if it was hollow as all chimneys are to some extent, this can be done simply by inserting a smaller box into the chimney to cut out a hole, and then removing the box, which will leave it looking hollow as far as our eye can see.  It's little details like that which makes me want to use a building from someone, compared to not using it.

I like the roof, it's got some good character to it with the tiles not being all the same, good job there.  As others mentioned, perhaps puting in vent pipes (most houses in the U.S. have a vent pipe for each toilet, and kitchen sink sometimes, plus a vent wherever the kitchen stove might be.  This would just add a little more flavor to your roof.  Perhaps even some rain gutters might be nice with downspouts and all would add more flavor as well.

The greenhouse does seem a bit large, but it's not something that would make me walk away from using this bat by any means.  I think one of the hardest things in creating and lotting your bats is keeping the proportions correct, maybe in France people have larger greenhouses than their own living house, however in my neck of the woods over here, most greenhouses are not much larger than a car or two cars, for a smaller cottage style home.

Keep at it, it's looking good so far.

Thanks for your comments all :)

City Builder  I'll try to follow your advices, but for pipes, I won't. Simply because most of french houses haven't this, and my houses are inspired of french houses, so I won't. The greenhouse is just a test, I think I'll relot this. ;) I hope I answerd you good ;)

So, truce of gossips, I show you a new project: I do some pieces of gardens, I hope you like ;)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi306.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fnn258%2FSciurus54%2FBATs%2FPreveiwang.jpg&hash=4aa0c9aa55ee913a2ae0c90179e18b475e0ca484)

Well, first of all, that looks great there my friend. &apls
Secondly, the fences you used doesn't looks good for gardens, they have an industrial look, I think you should change for some fences like these on in Jeronij's parks filler (it's an exemple , there's a lot of fences in all the Exchange)
there's two time the same piece !  :D :D
And the last thing, try to add some children's playground.

Don't worry, peoples will reply, but that take the times it demands !  :P
great BAT, that Mr Brico' is looking excellent. You've put a great effort in the texturing, and the result is good. Although, I'm not really for the big roll up door at the front's loading bay of the shop, I think the entire load must be done from the back of the building.. I thought you should replace it by a windows. And also, you've done stairs to the front loading bay doors, so why not to the door at the back ??!
But without these little details, it's a good shop you've done. ;)

Take care,
-Arthur.
Title: Re: S54s BATs - A "Mr.Bricolage"
Post by: tag_one on August 15, 2009, 01:03:08 PM
alright, alright, you asked for it so I'll reply :D
As a lover of modern industrial looking buildings I can only be happy seeing another one doing the same kind of buildings I make. I really like the work you've put in the model and the result looks great

Personally I would use another texture for the roof. Imo the asphalt texture you put on the parking lot would look great on the roof. Maybe with a bit smaller UVW map. As for the parking lots I would suggest using the base and overlay textures from the BSC Texture packs. This way the building will fit in better with the other buildings in the game ;)

Another small comment I have is about the green textures you used on the walls and the doors. If you make them a bit darker and add a bit more grey to it (desaturate) it will look much more realistic  ;)

Are you going to add some cool night light effects on this building? Just asking as you can make some great nightlights with a few omni's...

Anyway I like the work you've put into this one so far and I'm looking forward downloading it

I like what I'm seeing so far. Not sure why I haven't been through here more often. The school looks like an interesting style, and a large one too. Hope to see some new development on it if you get the chance. As for your industrial BAT, I agree with tag_one about desaturating the green, especially since it tends to get brighter after export. Also, while I like the setup of the fences and all, I hope you export the building as its own, and the fences on their own. It will allow for more options in the lotting process (though it does look good as it is). I suppose that's up to you though. Nice stuff so far.

Don't worry about getting few comments. It's often hard to know what to suggest for a work when it is still being made when you don't know what the end goal of the designer is. I like how it's shaping up though. It looks like a big building. How many students will it accommodate?

Very nice houses there, Guillaume !
But here's my two cents..
I think the roof texture isn't bad, at all, but try to make a different one on each house to break the monotony also, is there a gradient for the texture ? The texture at the top of the chimney is a bit too blank and empty, maybe with some more contrast it will looks better for my taste (yay !  :D ). The same for the windows, is it a transparent color or a bitmap file ? if it's a transparent, try ti add some details in the house, to make it more realistic. If you put some adds to the side wall, the result will be excellent when we don't put the house next to another one. Also, I must say the back wall is really boring, sorry to say that, but try to put more details, a door to the ground floor, a door to the cave etc..  About the stair at the front, try to put different variations about textures, and general aspect of the stair itself, put some different shape..

Hope you don't get that critic too badly because it's not the goal of my comment !  ;)

-Arthur.

The houses are great, and I can only agree with Arthur's comment above. Also as w2w versions you will get some problems with the chimney sticking out of the wall.
Still love to be able to use these when finished. :)

Art > I've already explained you on MSN what I thought about your comment ;)
Of course, the model I'll show is not finished, I've some things to do left. For the two-houses, I'll begin it again, but with the model I'll show you, and of course, when it'll be finished. So, feel free to say me some pieces of advice if you want! (of course they're welcome!! ;))
I've forgotten to say, on the back part, I'll make a door and a window, it's not finished! $%Grinno$%

I like. Great work.

Maybe you could use a trick that I use at times, using posters (http://www.posterclassics.com/index.html) on the floors. A trick learned by JBSimio.

I used it on the floors on the Eastgate Station (http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/ad252/vester71/Eastgate%20St/EastgateStationV10n.jpg).

Thanks ()stsfd() Well, all BATs are exported in HD and SD, but I must do LOTs and modding, but I haven't experience enough to do the modding &mmm
.
.
I hope you like it, these are typical worker houses from my small town

They are excellent!!!

As for the modding, try to set the stats similar to the same stage and size of comparable SC4 buildings, so that they don't mess-up gameplay. How big are these? Would they fit in a 1x2 or 1x3 lot, for example? Are they comparable (size-wize) to similar ingame buildings? If yes, you can even avoid lotting, they can simply grow on the Maxis lots (adding variety to the game). Otherwise you need special (custom) lots as well.

Very typical from your country and it reminds me there're many various architecture styles in France . I'm looking at your set very attentively as I intend to reproduce ... well , let say a bigger village than I've done so far and looking at the whole TSC production , I would be very pleased to expose your work but so far it seems there's only one upload available . I hope that situation will change , sooner or later ! There're several TSC members who would be able to Mod these babies or help you to .  You should also seriously think about diagonal village houses ... and farms . The W2W farm ( center of village ) is particularly lovely !!! . Makes me dream  ::) ... with a clear picture in mind of what I could do with it .  ;)

Maybe you could split the platforms into small part:
two sections with rampes
a straight section (16 meters or so)
a section with station house

This way you don't luck the length of the platform, but would repeat the straight section the number of times you need for a given length.

Indeed, it's very nice to see you back there! :)

Your new project looks good for now  I agree with vester, a simple but modular platform would be a great idea! It's actually one of the things, that I miss in game. :) Segments of 2-3 tiles (32-48m) would allow to make a platform as long as you exactly want, if it's placed on tracks (as a Transit Enabled Lot) then one could make customizable several platform long large multi-track stations. I wrote 2-3 tiles long, because as far as I know, it is not possible to place two TE lots just one by another, am I right?

Yep. It was a modular system.

Quote from: kbieniu7 on January 20, 2017, 07:07:12 AM...it is not possible to place two TE lots just one by another, am I right?
Well it should not be lots, but models to place on a lot, one after the other.

Well it should not be lots, but models to place on a lot, one after the other.

Ah, so you mean making just modular props? I thought rather to make some kind of puzzle-pieced platform to have in-game.
Title: Re: Sciurus' Factory
Post by: Sciurus on January 20, 2017, 11:15:57 AM
Well, actually, I first understood like Kamil understood. But the solution to put them on a lot can be a solution too, for those who like LOTting. Because plopping them directly in game could be nice for those who don't want to LOT but it has its inconveniences : for example, if you want to add props on it, you have to LOT them by many ways... the real modular thing is in the LE. I truly think that's the best solution.
Then I also can make stairs for 2, 4 or 6 plateforms... it gives me ideas to continue !
Title: Re: Sciurus' Factory
Post by: kbieniu7 on January 20, 2017, 01:48:42 PM
Although it is in LE where one can find the biggest possibilities to create best layouts, I will insist, however, that issuing puzzle pieces to in-game plopping would reach a bigger audience ;)
Title: Re: Sciurus' Factory
Post by: mgb204 on January 20, 2017, 03:06:42 PM
Some modular platform props would be really useful for us lotters. I did take a stab at this myself, but I could not get the separate pieces to line up seamlessly. Although the idea of modular pieces came from a mod for OpenTTD (https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiIkcrY6tHRAhVDcBoKHa6yBpIQFggaMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.openttd.org%2F&usg=AFQjCNHwhKYq__xV-jid7cFoj0SjyUzGIQ&bvm=bv.144224172,d.bGg):

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi991.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf39%2FMGB204%2FOpenTTD-Modular-Station_zpslasvtmpe.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=950e2d977af92819f32fbca37b8c076039d164eb)

If you think of the platform pieces each as 1x1 lots, using just a small number of segments, you can make a huge variety of different stations. This may be more problematic with SC4, since you can't place two TE lots together. But that's not unsolvable. If basic platform segments (ideally 16m Long) existed, along with end pieces and maybe a few shelters, the rest of the props you'd need probably exist already. If you were to make such models, I would gladly utilise them to create such lots.

In any case, I'm looking forward to your work on this small station. It's good to have one with more realistically sized platforms. Most stations are way too small, especially in this area.
Title: Re: Sciurus' Factory
Post by: Sciurus on January 21, 2017, 09:34:55 AM
Thank you for your interest. I think I can make both solutions :
- One that allows you to lot different stations directly in game, with pre-lotted platform of 32m : then you can make them TE and there is no problem, I think ! The minimum is so 96m (3 pieces), which is the tiniest station you can find IRL.
- One that allows you to lot these platforms in the LE, and add every props you want. I BATted some one, you find them here just below :P  @Krasner is doing other ones, to complete the collection. At the end, we think to publish a French stations prop pack.

Cool models, I especially like the one de Jarville-la-Malgrange. Nice to see both of you cooperating on this topic  now just wishing that you could put this fancy SNCF's jingle used for the beginning of voice announcements as a sound for query tools  $%Grinno$%

Like it, this is really amazing. It's really one of those things that should have been done by now, so it's great to see such quick progress. I also like the range of platform options on offer too. Please consider making some diagonal renders of the platforms/props too.

Now it would be really easy to make a few small buildings for a different theme/locale, but re-use those stations props like the platforms. These are bound to be seriously useful.  :bnn:

Hello everybordy !

First, thank you very much for your enthusiasm, it's really motivating to see it !! :bnn:
I kept working on the pack, I made platforms, with 6 different 3 textures and 3 different base pieces. So like it's written on the images, there's and end piece, which can be used in the both sides, a middle piece and a middle piece with a walkway, to go through the ways. These pieces are 32m long, so they will be overhanging, made for those you don't want to lot platforms. I just thought about on thing : if you want to plop props on the overhanging part, I have to uncenter them in Gmax right ? Or I can directly merge them into the model, it could be a solution too... If someone can share me the best solution to him, tell me :D

Now, let's images talk for me !

I hope you still like it !

As far as I know from experience, to put an overhanging prop on a lot, you indeed need to move its centre in gmax. If it was 48m long platform (3 tiles long), then you wouldn't need to do anything, as its center would match the center of a lot. If it's 32m (2 tiles), then you need to decentre it by 8 meters. See attached picture.

And, of course, great models!

One way to offset a model is by rendering a new one, but that's a lot of work, not to mention makes a load of redundant models you don't need.

Two other ways of doing it are using the RKT4 property and a new prop to offset a copy of the original, all whilst using only one model. Otherwise, using model tweaker and a copy of the S3D files only, you can offset the LODs and link back to the texture of the original model. Since we've been talking over PM, I'd be happy to handle that for you. Realistically, if you have 4 new offset props, 32m & 64m in both Left and Right directions, that allows for 5 to be linked together for a total platform size of 160m. I think that should be sufficient for most uses?

Great progress BTW .

And since you already involved on this, why not use your sidewalk-mimicking models to create an adaptative set of platforms? That would be very useful, and up to what I understand, not too hard to do...

Hello everybody !

Thank you for your comments, first of all. mgb204, I'll contact you in the next days (I've already said that last week I know :D ) about platforms and props modding.
I continued the station pack and began another station, Longwy !

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi306.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fnn258%2FSciurus54%2FLongwy2.jpg&hash=bbd8e24fb2acc070840e5e987bd5fcb2199b3460) (http://s306.photobucket.com/user/Sciurus54/media/Longwy2.jpg.html)

After this one, I think I'll stop modeling stations for the moment. I'll make some later maybe ! Modding part is a big one and it'll demand me some big time..
Then, I wanted to ask you : is that normal that when I make it in the PIMx, it gives me .loosedesc and not a .sc4desc like every other BATs ? I fond it bizarre and I don't know how to do &mmm  thanks for your lights !

Making a rectangle sidewalk-adapting prop is itself not complex at all. It only gets hard when you start making more complex shapes, which requires UV Unwrapping which I've yet to work out how. Until now, I've used math to calculate them manually, which is unworkable beyond a certain point, since I'm no math genius either. The hard part is making a model/lod which allows you to seamlessly attach the prop to it. A similar thing would be the retail banner props for my convenience store, which took a lot of work to avoid props colliding, which looks terrible.

No rush. Actually, I've been sidetracked onto other things this week, so that will probably work out better anyhow.

The .loosedesc file is used by PIM-X to store the Building Exemplar file temporarily. Once you create a lot for your new building, it is saved inside the *.SC4Lot file, and you can safely delete the *.loosedesc file. This counts for all ploppable buildings; unfortunately, the Maxis Lot Editor doesn't do the same when making a ploppable lot from an *.SC4Desc file that was produced by the Maxis Plugin Manager, so most people include that superfluous file into their upload.

For growable lots, the *.SC4Desc file is kept separate, since there are often several lots that use the same Building Exemplar file (which stores values like the capacity, cost etc.). So if you create just one growable lot for some building model, you could copy the Exemplar file with the Reader and insert it into the *.SC4Lot file manually, and then delete the extra *.SC4Desc file.

This is basically the same procedure as merging model and desc files of serveral props into one DAT file; it doesn't matter for the game, but keeps things simple for the user. If you look at one of those superfluous *.SC4Desc files for ploppable lots, you'll see that they're not used by the game at all, since some IDs don't match with the lots, and properties like the lot icon aren't assigned (this step happens when the Exemplar file is copied into the *.SC4Lot file).

  Hello everybody ! :bnn:

A long time passed and many things happened in my life so I didn't bring news over there. My studies took over SimCity and my real life too... That's why I didn't do so much for all this time. But now, for now about 3 weeks, I'm officially graduated ! I'm (almost) an architect. You can't imagine how happy I could be. After 5 years and a half, my studies are gone. Away. Far away ! And I have all the time I want to make BATs and LOTs now...

So I took the tools in my hands back. Ouch... that hurts. All these letters, these numbers... read-med, installs, props, prop families... but I was happy to see that I did not loose everything and many reflexes came back to me. So so so... Scours, let's show us what you did, uh ?! Guys... not now, be patient ! But it will come very very soon. I wanted to announce you something too : with Krasner, who's a talented BATter, we decided to create a new team : the KSTeam. KS for... *drums please*... Krasner+Sciurus. Isn't it fabulous ? As we began a common project, we'll continue it together in a common thread. Also, we'll continue our personal projects in parallel, don't worry.

For these personal projects, I don't really have a « fil rouge » like we say in french, a continued line. I fixed no limit. Am I a punk ? Yes. Seriously, I decided to make every BAT I wanted, whatever they doesn't have anything in common. Maybe they'll have... they'll all be situated in France, especially in Nancy, Metz, Longwy or Bordeaux. CHANGING STYLE ! But this is exciting I find. I made a list of what I could do and it's pretty long... but I don't want to make you wait a longer time and we begin with something new... the

S54 PropPack Vol.1

This prop pack includes 2 files .dat : my own prop pack and a file with prop families made with the wonderful cars from my friend girafe. So it's a dependency with a dependency. But after that, believe me you'll be happy !

I'll upload this PropPack today. It'll be released on Simtropolis, SC4Devotion and ToutSimCities. Be ready guys !! The revolution is coming ! &hlp

Hi!

Thanks for the upload, but could you change the installation folder structure, because it doesn't put into MY Documents plugin folder, it creates a new one: c:\Users\Guillaume\Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins\KSTeam\S54 - PropPackVol1\
Of course I can manually copy the files, but still it's a bit inconvinient!

EDIT: Oh, and other notice: was that intentional that the prop pack contains several (9) lots? There is a library, roundabout fillers etc... I don't want to whining, but could you revisit this pack and only put the model/prop files into it, without the lot files?

Thanks anyway!

- Tyberius
