So, I'm kicking in on SC4Devotion with my MD that is allready running on ST.. First updated will be copy-pasted with highlights from my ST-City Journal to let people introduce to the region. After the first few updated I will regularly update the MD as I'm develloping the region further.

True - but on the other hand, many Autobahns aren't exactly that magnificient as they are known in the other countries. The "no speed limit" applies for at most half of them, while the others are restricted to 80, 100 or 130 km/h at most. What I'm also missing on the pic is the huge number of trucks that occupy the right lane nowadays.
Anyway, I've glanced into this CJ at ST now and then, and I was pretty amazed - it's great that you decided to show your region here as well! :)
A fine start- very definitive and sets the stage for what I know will be great pics to come. I lived in the Rheinpfalz area (Pirmasens) south of the Ruhr area on the French border for two wonderful years in the late 1970s- bicycled the length of the Moselle River in Germany just south of where RUHRGEBIET is set. I'm sure I'm going to love looking at this MD!

It will be around 70-80% accurate.. Only the scale is a bit down, lets say about 2/3 of real-life. So a large city-tile stretches for I think 6x6km (in simcity as 100% accurate would be 4x4km)

haha, No I know.. but, in the Ruhr-area most highways aren't that nice as in the rest of Germany. There's no time to renovate the roads because it would be just mayhem if you close them down! Congestion will horrify the region if closed down....

I like your way of planning very much and I'm very interested in it's effects.
I like driving and I love German Autobahns - all of them (although in the Ruhrgebiet this network is very complicated - but very well signed ;D)
I don't know this region very good (I was only in Essen and Oberhausen, and also in Koln and Bonn - Rheinland is great!). But I know this climate. My hometown in Poland, Bielsko-Biała, lies on hilly terrain near Czech and Slovak border, but this is a south part of the biggest Polish industrial region - Silesia. It is also filled by mines, steelworks and other heavy industry. About 80% of my works is performed in Silesian industrial plants :D)

I have seen some of it already on Simtropolis, but I'm glad you post it here as well, since I'm not very often at ST. I love the Sauerland and my friends and I sometimes go to weekend skiing to Winterberg (if there is actually enough snow :P)
The work so far looks well done (at least in the region view) and I hope to see some development of the Sauerland soon...

infrastructure is about 90 - 95 % accurate. Only in the Duisburg-area aren't the main-roads well planned out, only highways and railroads. But, as I said sometime before on ST-forums; the more I play, the more realism and recreation I will develop....

Wow. Normally I don't like industrial areas very much, but those pics (previous page) gives a totally other look on industrial buildings, I even like it ;D

That's a true industrial looking :thumbsup: (I know something about it, I spent most of my working time in such landscapes :D)
My absolutely favourites are the first one and last two pictures. This green water works very well here, and the port area is perfect!
Also, excellent idea with these RL pictures. It is admirable how you modify real landscapes to adjust them to the SC4 scale :thumbsup:

Oh, they are - esp. in dense urban and suburban areas like the Ruhrgebiet. Usually, the traffic jam messages in the radio are longer than the actual news...

EJC's CURVED INFRASTRUCTURE TUTORIAL
Today I wanna show you my "secret" (more a tactic) on how to get such winding and twisting roads...
STEP 1; Get a "Google Earth" sattelite pic of the area
Find yourself the correct area within "Google Earth". My workdesk at home consists of 2 computers. One is my work-computer with internet & stuff.. (a very old and outdated pc) This is the computer where I run "Google Earth". The other computer is much more powerfull and is ment for gaming.. This is the computer where I run SC4 on!!
So, 2 screens next to eachother -> 1 with the reallife satellite view on "Google Earth", and 1 with the game SC4 running....

The area is found in Google Earth.. Personal for Highways, Railroads and main arteries I chose to take a screenshot of it and freeze the image so I always have the right scale on me (chose for large, medium & small city-tiles)
STEP 2; Get a nice smooth line filled with trees

In this small tutorial I'll show you only the highway to be build (blue in "Google Earth") First of all you have to select the (god) treemode and plant the trees in the zoomed-out view of SC4 all in 1 smooth and curved line as you see it on the "Google Earth-sattelite image"

If you're not satisfied with the lines drawn you can always erase them and do it over again (be careful you don't demolish your neighbour-connections!!) But, if the line is drawn correct you can start filling it up with your infrastructure of choise (this time it's highway)
STEP 3; Fill your tree-line with the infrastructure you want!

Make sure you take small steps at a time.. I almost never use diagonal-tiles for 3 or 4 times in a row.. Make sure you play enough with the corners of degrees you're building the infrastructure so you get a nice smooth line across your city-tile map
Well, that's all for now with this small tutorial.. I use this technique for example; Highways, Railroads & Railyards, Main arteries (avenues as well as mayor roads), Canals & Rivers
STEP 4; Lurk for several minutes at your region-view..
You should try and experiment with it.. You would see you get some stunning region-views with all-curved roads like we Europeans like it most!!!

ejc - this is quite some region you're building here. As everyone before me has already said - your industrial areas a fantastic. Possibly the most realistic looking industrials I've seen on SC4 &apls &apls &apls.

I have always been truely captivated ( a captivated lurker I've to confess ...) by your CJs . Your regional views are the most breathtaking that I know ... but ...(there's always a "but" ) but more you zoom in more the charm is going away ...all these turns and turns are just irritating my poor logical analysis . I'm exactly at the opposite of you and I think that's an interesting paradoxe . I work on details but I know that more I zoom out my city more my work is just looking for that it is , a sad grid ... and (smile and sigh ) , that's irritating me in the same way . I think there's no possible compromise between these 2 choices ; it's a choice .
I don't know (I'm not waiting for ) if you have any precision to give about I've just said , simply I remember that we use to say that the opposites attract themselves . Let's see if that's true ...

The historic center of the city of "Duisburg" is jammed between highway A58 and the rivers "Rhine" and "Ruhr". It contains lots of newly build mid-highrises after the center was destroyed in world war II. Nontheless, there is a nice historic centre with old churches, narrow streets and nice plazas.

@ Badsim; I know... it's a choice indeed. I've also made "New York City" a few years ago. Based on straight avenues and nice layouts. But, it's more of a challenge I think to make more "european" cities, with a more natural flow of roads.. And, indeed.. ingame close-up it just doens't make sense!! But hey, that are the basics what SC4 is build from. If you know what I mean... Think you do... But again.. it's a choice you make
@ Paroch, thundercrack83, bat &rooker1; hahaaaaa! is't simple as that! I use it all the times. also for terraforming my regions. I mark out where outer lines of rivers or mountains should be, and get handterraforming

That's something else than complexity (or realistic clutter ) . Something more .
Things don't look to be just "put there" , coming from nowhere , in 2007 ... It seems that they have had to grow - I know that it was the original purpose of the game but nowhere else I 've got this feeling so strong -, they have had to grow the ones against the others by a irrepressible necessity just like this highway A58 ! Each building , each road (or another piece of the network ) have had to find its place through the global history ... It was not thought by someone in particular , because obviously a city isn't the result of the thought of someone in particular ...
For these reasons your cities seem to have a real temporal dimension and their own life .
My interest for the closest details is dying there . Terrific.

All this discussion is very interesting! I am sure both points of view (Badsim's and yours) are equally important. I agree with Badsim's analyse above, I think there are more aspects of realism in SC4. One of them is if someone knows perfect SC4 principles, he/she can use them to make more realistic looking area as if it would be a simple copy of the real terrain. But it is extremely difficult, I try to do something like this, but I'm still doing experiments and still making many mistakes $%Grinno$% You two explore two different areas of SC4 and I learn a lot from both of you! :thumbsup:

More great updates. I really like the shot of Duisburg Altstadt. The twisting roads and avenues, the highway going over the avenue, the avenue going over the railway and the railway junction having a raised element. And the way the three line railway come towards the station on a diagonal and then opens up into an 8 platform station (is that two stations stuck together). So much working in this one small area - and working so well together.
I even found myself trying to scroll to the right to see how the highway and railway continued to work together!
A masterpiece, I am in awe of your work and very jealous at the same time! :thumbsup:

My absolutely favourite is the third picture - with modern office buildings surrounded by old w2ws - very realistic, many old industrial city centers look exactly as this, in Polish Silesia too!

Mülheim <-> Duisburg
The Deutsche Bahn (DB) is facing some heavy trouble with passenger-flows between the two cities mentioned above.. The main railline for passenger-traffic between "Duisburg HBF" and "Mülheim a/d Ruhr" has been congesting for some time now and they have chosen to double the cappacity by adding an extra railline next to the existing one..

@ Paroch; I can tell you... Düsseldorf is planned, but will take some time. First I'm gonna develop eastwards towards "Dortmund" and "Unna". After that I will go a little bit up, and build westwards -> "Castrop Rauxel", "Gelsenkirchen", "Bottrop" and "Duisburg-nord"

Cool, I have been to Essen once, back in 02 or 03 on the Essen Automesse. I remember seeing the city being greener than I thought it would be :D

I really like the way the A40 snakes its way through Essen - and the build up of traffic on both the A40 and on the fly over adds even more realism. I also like the apartment blocks that have the blue bit on the top - don't think I've seen them before and they fit in well in your city.

I think your MD is different from many others in that you are capturing and recreating a real life area. I've visited Dusseldorf and Moenchengladbach a few times, so I feel I understand a little of this region and you capture it so well.
In the last update I really like the way you've put the football pitches at the edge of residential areas. I can just imagine the noise and the action on a Sunday morning.

This has to be one of the best European cities I've seen, so the award is well deserved. You inspire me with the 'diagonal all the way' but I must ask: where did you find that diagonal white building with curved edges I see in different pics?
btw thanks for the pic with the 'modern euro housing' from the stex. I've dowloaded them as well but never saw them grow, so now I know they do work :)
Well.......very interesting use of diagonal roads and the way you have placed the diagonal lots. :thumbsup: You must have a lot of patience to place everything so nicely.
The city looks very good over all and I can't really think of anything to complain about. It's not really my style, but, hey, this is not my MD, it's yours. The use of diagonal puzzle peices, the ramps, doesn't look so good, but it is what you have to work with.
I really like the first, sixth and last pictures. The zoom that you choose to use in these cases shows off your city very well.
Now two things caught my eye. First was the train station in pictures five and six, if you could tell me where you found it, I would appreciate it. It looks huge, I like big train stations. Second, the bridge in picture seven, if you would help with that one as well. I don't think I have seen that one before.

Well, back again with a nice update I think. We'll take a closer look to the newer parts of "Essen". Close to the main train-station and highway errected some nice high-rises. Something like "La Defense" in "Paris". Those towers look pretty nice in reallife as you enter the city by "Ruhrschnellweg"

I couldn't agree more with what's posted above. A very nice update indeed, with the fourth pic being my favourite. That's a picture you can take in so many European cities, the group of hi-rise buildings is just perfect

Very nice update. I really like the over all feel of the city. The Radisson looks great over the avenue tunnel, also very nice large lot. The only thing I don't like is the roads not bieng smooth. I know sometimes it's hard to do but it may look alot better i the end.

Essen Altstadt is really good done, maybe the Hauptbahnhof is not identical as the real one, but it matches the surrounding very good. I was in Essen only once, but I can confirm you are able to create a general atmosphere of such places. Very interesting thing for me - a mix of old w2w buildings and modern office and commercial buildings, it's a really German look (of course my opinion is only a tourist's point of view :D)
It's a bit strange how interesting can be such busy, highly industrialized cities, isn't it? ;)

Great update!!! Those pictures look great!
Wow it looks so...European! :) Very realistic pictures of any northern-western european city. I must ask what roadside mod you used? The grey sidewalks look so much like...home, I would like to use them also.
picture 1: Very nice overview. The best thing is the combination of diagonals and 'normal' buildings. This is really very lifelike to bend and curve the roads and buildings. One thing that keeps bugging me is the half empty tile in the top left corner :)
picture 2: Isn't that Haarlemmergold his Hungarian building? What a great bat that is.. The railway looks very aged, I like that a lot..though the train ride must be a bumpy one when looking at the tracks.
picture 3: Again the rail looks a bit rollercoaster-ish, but I don't mind that much. There is so much good to see in your pictures to make up for it. Real great work! One small suggestion would be to edit the base texture from that Berlin bus stop to a matching texture with the sidewalks. That would really finish it I feel..
picture 4: Wow that looked like a train wreck for sure, but it seems the railway officials know what they are doing. Also nice to see Kwakelaar his buildings in a modern setting.
picture 5: I just love it when a railway station has some realistic length on the ... perrons (sorry can't find the english word for it). A very nice modern railway station in a realistic setting...just those blue busses seem out of place, but that's just personal I guess...

It looks like four train stations put altogether in LE.

In and around Dortmund we find very large factories. steel Mills, coal mining and energy plants. All very heavy industry that was build right within suburbs. Now, these project are all demolished and being replaced by housing projects. I've build Dortmund "the oldschool-way" with large factories in the city (just to apply heavy industry demandings within the SC4-region)

Westfalenhütte more north in Dortmund. An even larger area filled with heavy industry. More polluting and more dirty.. This is situated north-west of the center and is almost as large as the entire center!!
@Rooker / thundercrack83: the station is indeed jammed together 4 original stations.. Not within LE, but just placing it right within SC4.. You allready gave some links; thanks!! The other stations and platforms are made by some Japanese guys and I found those I think 3 years ago somewhere in the "massive japanese BAT gallery" it's not to find for me anymore. You should travel along the pages such as NOBs, maybe it's somewhere there..

DORTMUND Fog
Just of west of "Dortmund" is the "Schnettkerbrücke" (a bridge) that crosses a small valley with the river "Emscher" below. Highway A40 / B1 crosses it.. and also two main rail-lines towards the station of "Dortmund"
It's also a place where fog builds up and spreads around the region around the bridge, that is just what I wanted to show you...

The region view looks great...and the I disagree with you saying in the last update that there was nothing special about the city center! It looks as authentic german as you can get, I think, which is pretty spectacular. Great photoshop with the fog, too!

The Sauerland is a rural, hilly area spreading across most of the east of Nordrhein-Westfalen, heavily forested and sparsely inhabited. It has been chosen as the first place in Germany where the Wisent or European bison will be reintroduced mainly because of its large forests, and to help boost the tourism industry by attracting visitors to the region. In the winter tourist come for wintersports to Sauerland. With ski-carrousels in the towns as Winterberg, Willingen, Alt- und Neuastenberg and Bödefeld.

Sauerland in the winter, full of snow and ice!
In the west the hills continue into the Bergische Land, to the south into the Siegerland, and in the north-east to the Teuroburg Forest. The major rivers of the Sauerland are the Ruhr and the Lenne. Several smaller rivers were converted into artificial lakes by dams to store water for the nearby Ruhr Area (Ruhr-gebiet). The biggest of these lakes are those of the Möhne and Bigge.

Bödefeld is a small village with about 1200 inhabitants. It is situated just south of the mountain range "Hunau" that is 818meters above sealevel. Most people know the town of the ski-accomodations that are situated in this hilly terrain.

Edit: I must say your information about Sauerland makes me curious of this region! travelled once along Rhein and I know some (mainly alpine) areas in South Germany, but this land looks beautiful on your pictures! Maybe a bit similar to my hometown surrounding (Beskidy - Beskiden in German language) :)
When I will go to Germany next time, I will visit this land with pleasure!

Super update, awesome pics, both in game and RL. The mix of pics is becoming a nice touch in MDs now a days. But yours are great because your city is a very closely resemmbles each other. Hi EJC... I believe this is my first post in your thread as well. I have been lurking but can never think of words worthy of what you're doing. The comparrison pictures are a great touch and really show how well you're bringing this to life. I also really enjoyed the region view from a few updates back. The Hunauturm - wow , even though its at the edge of the map it didn't bother me as its setting is perfect.

wow, two great updates. The terrain mod you're using just seems so very appropriate for the area you are depicting - great choice. I really like the way the road slides down the side of the hill into the village with the stream.

The city of Hammbruck
It will be a new chapter in my recreation-MD. The city will be fantasy, but based on the cities of "Basel, Switzerland", "Düsseldorf, Germany" and "Bremen, Germany". It's situated on the German/French border and the city also has a Parisian inspired part of town.
In this picture you see the overview of the German side of the city. With top left the river and it's industries and port. Bottom left are newly neighbourhoods with hgihrises and appartment-complexes. Top right is the oldest part of the city, with church, stores and historic plazas. Middle of the picture contains the central station (German), the exhibition centers and city-park.
Well, a small introduction of what is to come this summer of ejc, we'll take a little break on the "Sauerland-area", I will continue this when fall/winter is coming and the region is turning into snow...

This is really something which could be seen in Virtual Earth :thumbsup:
The seaport/industrial area is perfect, I love also the TV Tower with it's surrounding and HK residentials. Great use of open space, especially in industrial areas!

What a fantastic picture. Everything seems to be very well thought out. The rail lines are very nice, I even think you could get a very nice complement from our rail expert Bernhard (Nardo69). A few spots here and there look a little empty/plain IMO, but other than that, I LOVE IT!

With inspirations by Mr. Beer, Astrianu (American Based CJ's & MD's) I wanted to pull that off in an European region. So; lots of open spaces and use of terrain, combined with diagonal road-building aswell an European Rail-layout -> Hope Bernhard likes it :satisfied:

The introduction... It's a city with a population of 457.000 inhabitants. It's situated in Switzerland, near the border with France and Germany. It's a very touristic city and the nations of Germany, Switzerland and France flow together in this city.
The first real finished picture I'm going to show you is of the cathedral in the "german-themed" district. Here is the main shopping center with large warehouses, stores and restaurants..

The following update contains the outer areas of the central shopping district. Jammed between the main raillines, the river and the old town.. the people can come here to relax and work. With some nice theatres and cinemas and some high-rise office buildings this is also a very busy part of town. Build end 19th century and some goodlooking historical buildings can be found here!

Great updates there ejc. I always enjoy popping in to your MD and this was no exception. You must spend many hours making those rail networks looking just right. I really like the way the old rail line goes over the modern line with the brick bridge - very realistic.
Now this is a fine piece of work here - nothing to nag on! :thumbsup: &apls &apls &apls
No railway crossing, decent connections in the railway station head, nice slopes, stupendous work with the elevations and railway over- and underpasses in the matter of Stuttgart Hbf integrated in a wonderful urban background!

HAMMBRUCK Hafen
Today I'm gonna take you into the docks of "Hammbruck". With 40 million tons of cargo coming in and leaving the port each year it's one of the busiest ports of the country. Mayor steel-mills and refineries can be found here.. The innerport is different from the newer build port far outside the city. This old docks are been build 19th century and are really jammed into the old center, not many space around here; every single tile is in use!

I remember when the first few updates where on ST, after that I kind of got fed up of SC, so I havn't been looking. I've just looked through the entire thing now and its amazing ejc, especially the rural parts, I always find them harder to do. I have spent alot of time in Austria and Germany and it looks exactly like I remember.
You have even inspired me to start work on my own european region. I have one question though, where are the red germans trains from, I have looked all over the place for them and can't seem to find them.

The French side of town isn't that large as the German.. But, it's an international hub of infrastructure; two main rail-lines to Switzerland (/Italy) and towards Germany (/Austria) join here. Result; a large rail-complex in front of the French main-station; "Hammbourg SNCF" Also it is a mixture of building styles with roman influences, Paris influences and offcourse German influences because it's just so close from here.

I have missed far too much! Your train stations look amazing. They seem very complex at first glance, but the longer I looked the more it all made perfect sense. I also really like how the ports came together. I don't even want to imagine how long that may have taken! The most recent update looks great. I'm still trying to take it all in, so I don't have anything more specific than that to add.

Small progress; small update -> This city takes up to 15minutes to load within SC4. It's almost fully develloped and totally covers every single tile of this 256x256 city.. Lots to show you but it will be in a slow pace

YARDS SNCF
Today a closer look on those massive railyards in behind of those flats.. It's home to the French National Rail-company; SNCF. These yards have many variety. Some freight-trains aswell passenger-trains are stationed here. Also there's a maintenance-depot for locomotives aswell passenger-carrages.

I wonder each time if I have already seen a so right scale about city planning and about your use of Gare du Nord and its absolutely terrific railways arrival & yards , this is - no doubt this time - the most proper I've seen . May I ask if it's a deliberate choice from you to keep the first version of the station , as it is my favorite ?

Firstly I want to say that I browsed back the summer updates I missed ... and your pictures about small villages on sunny hills are fabulous .
Now , knowing that's - in title - recreations , indeed looking at your work is more than looking at simple SC4 pictures & sims . There's clearly an invitation to think about reality ... good or bad , nice or dirty , the world is doing what it has to do . No choice . Never . My conviction ...and maybe why I'm so attracted by your work .
Some people understand things by taking apart them , you're in the opposite process to re-assemble them ... and I would be curious to know if this kind of work has acted on your way to think the world . ::)

The red DB regional train is placed on a lot. ;) If you look closely, you can see the blueish SC4 background peeking through on both sides of the tracks - which is a common problem for lots that have an overlay texture (the tracks), but no base texture.

The Sauerland is a rural, hilly area spreading across most of the east of Nordrhein-Westfalen, heavily forested and sparsely inhabited. It has been chosen as the first place in Germany where the Wisent or European bison will be reintroduced mainly because of its large forests, and to help boost the tourism industry by attracting visitors to the region. In the winter tourist come for wintersports to Sauerland. With ski-carrousels in the towns as Winterberg, Willingen, Alt- und Neuastenberg and Bödefeld.

In the west the hills continue into the Bergische Land, to the south into the Siegerland, and in the north-east to the Teuroburg Forest. The major rivers of the Sauerland are the Ruhr and the Lenne. Several smaller rivers were converted into artificial lakes by dams to store water for the nearby Ruhr Area (Ruhr-gebiet). The biggest of these lakes are those of the Möhne and Bigge.

Above 500meters we find medium snowquality, but as we get above 700meters we find good quality ski-conditions!

Snow has arrived! The slopes that face north have encountered 50cm of snow the past weeks and people are having really nice holidays in the region right now! Perfect for some sking, nordic walk or just relaxing!

I don't know if you have had a look at the last snow mods and snowy stuff came out these last weeks (STEX and/or PLEX) ... but coming back here , I wonder if they would add something useful to your sublime pictures . If perfection means something , you stand very very close to it , and that requires more than Mods ...

In the whole area the past weekend it has snowed; from around 10cm of fresh snow in the
lower parts to up to 50cm of snow on the "Kahler Asten" and the surroundings of the village "Winterberg"
Another small update, I just can't find the time to get SC4 up and running. But; as said it's not dead and I will continue to produce some regions and screenshots!!
