Title: SimCity4 10 years!
Post by: mave94 on January 14, 2013, 12:30:59 AM
Happy birthday SimCity4!

Who would have thought ten years ago that ...

... there are ferries, one-way roads and high-speed trains?
... it is possible to make custom buildings at all?
... it is possible to make new effects?
... there are waterfalls, fires, snow and street bridges?
... we have new networks?
... we can make custom intersections?
... it is possible to make a real-life region at scale in SC4?
... we can build cities like Paris, New York and Tokyo?
... we made custom bridges?
... we have custom cars and airplanes?
... we can make huge cities very fast with the CAM?
... networks can be other than diagonal and orthogonal?
... it's possible to make custom queries?
... we can even edit the UI?
... props can be seasonal?
... we can build cities without anything from the original game?
... we can make airports the way we want?
... we can make (almost) everything we want?
... we have weather in SC4?
... custom trees are ploppable and even cars and sims?
... we can go beyond our world?
... there's still so much interest in this game, ten years after the release?
... there is such a great community, called SC4D?

Thank you community for what we achieved in the past ten years. I celebrate this birthday with the installation of SC4 on my new computer. :)
Perhaps in the next ten years we will be able to ...

... build below sealevel
... drag diagonal bridges
... make FAR bridges
... build cities with only MMPs
... make working ploppable residential buildings that won't be abandoned
... do things we could never think of

Yes! And all that is possible.....
We will see what we, or better stated: other people from several sites that are way better in interpreting IT-stuff than I am, cna squeeze out of this game!

And still waiting for a sequel that gives us the things computers can do nowadays with the versatility and complexity of the ten years old game we play every day.

I'd say: let's congratulate ourselves, some of us more than others, for the way we have changed this simple game into a hobby of it's own.

10 years, it's amazing how far we've come. I hope that this anniversary will be grand and full of great stuff, as it is 2013.

I hope that the next generation after me will have the same excitement that I have in years to come and hope that Simcity 4, the greatest game on earth, will stay strong. :)

Congrats to Simcity 4 on this accomplishment, and here we go.

It does not feel like 10 years. My game changes and feels new all the time. Sometimes removing old content. Replacing it with newer - better content.

As long as my ten year old computer keeps booting up I'll be here. Ten year old computer? Wow! Well, I'm not that confident. I backed up the MyDocs and Gmax folders yesterday. It took 3 hours. :D

It hasn't been exactly 10 years for me, but nonetheless the only game that has a permanent spot on my computer. I know my life would be a little less enjoyable if it weren't for simcity and especcially all the awesome communities that support the game and making it immortal. I am willing to bet that there will never be a game again that would still be so alive and productive as this one.

Happy birthday Simcity and I wish you all many more years of enjoyment!

I'll say this, even not needing to play the game, this place is a fun place to come to, just to keep up on all the new stuff and chime in on idea's, even if its something you are not interested in.

It took me years to ditch MHW for RHW, but I did after awhile, and it was because I would see what others came up with via RHW(especially people like Tarkus and Haljackey).  I didnt care for the NWM either at first, but again, seeing city journals with major uses of them, made me want to play with them.

This site also has some of the very best people that will assist on a moments notice if you need help, and staff is top notch as well.

One does not need to play the game to have fun here at all, which is probably why I feel its the best simcity 4 site on the net honestly.

Good day to release a game, I'd say. Oddly enough though, if I recall, I actually got the game for Christmas that year... or was it my birthday. Anyway, it's been a fun ride, and here's to many more years for the game to come.

And that is why this game will never die.  It is amazing how much stuff that was intended to be placed in the game, that never was, but was left and how dedicated players can take that unused stuff and make it playable.

Its a shame that they refuse to allow the .exe to be unlocked, considering they have no interest in furthering the game at all

And what will happen to our game when one day our friends in Redmond decide to change the OS substantially in such a way that the game cannot be installed again? Or the day that my little son gets his hands on the disk, throws it in his sandpit and scratches it irreparable?

How to avoid these disasters?

:'(  :'(  :'(

P.S: we have these virtual CD-programs that can handle a CD image file like it were a CD/DVD reader, meaning that I can put the original disk into a secure place and use the image instead. But I guess these don't work with copy-protected disks?

I have a couple disks. . . I'm sure I can send one over to you should your son decide to go on a rampage. I also have the digital steam version which I think is around €2 or €3.  Incidentally, I also have a copy of XP and Vista lying around for the same reasons. I even have Win95 and SC2K ready to go should I get into a nostalgic mood.

In short, SC4 cannot die. Now the community around it, that's a different matter. It would not be very interesting to update PSC in, say, 2018, and actually be talking to the walls.

Cheers

in 2018, the NAM team will be releasing RHW 231, with the new RHW 22C(with L0-L10 variants), and Z will have managed to make the traffic simulator be so realistic, Maxis will beg him to work for them on their next botched SimCity game  :)

Wow, ten years! Seems like just yesterday we were celebrating it's ninth birthday. I think it was '04 when I got the game, maybe late '03. I remember being so excited about finally being able to play the 'neighbors' that were always tantalizingly just out of reach in SC2K and SC3K. Somewhere in my archives I still have my first region. It took me all of about an hour to bankrupt my first city, left with a barren waste of mostly-abandoned R$ high rises, and that's when I realized this game was going to require a bit more finesse than the previous versions had. It didn't take long to get the hang of it though, and before long I was building sprawling metros I would gladly call home.

The game wasn't perfect, but the community quickly saw to it that some of the more pressing issues were fixed. SC4TF, NAM, RTMT, and a handful of custom buildings and I was good to go. Four computers later and I'm still playing off the same disk.  ::)

Speaking of which, vortext, do tell.
Title: Re: SimCity4 10 years!

Well, first I made a copy, or a so-called virtual image of the discs. Most default CD burning software has this option, otherwise download for instance CloneCD (http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonecd.html) (note it has a 21-day trial period, should be sufficient though).
Next I installed Virtual CloneDrive (http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html), which is freeware and used to acces the image.

Now, starting the game is still a two-step process but rather than putting the physical disc in the drive, I mount the image of the RH disc and then launch the game as usual.

It's quite easy to create the image files and once done, the discs aren't really needed anymore as you can even do a complete reinstall from the images!

A small sidestory then, seems appropriate given the 10 year celebration. When I rediscovered SC4 ~2.5 years ago, or more precise, when I discovered the online community I couldn't find my copy anywhere. Either sold, misplaced during a move or lend out and never returned, to this day I still can't recall what happened. In any case, upon seeing all this amazing content, I quickly set sail to the murkier waters of the internet. However, it turned out the nightlighting didn't work without a properly patched/updated version. So eventually I bought a secondhand copy online and it was actually the seller who gave me this tip to use an image file to prevent wearing the discs. Since then I've only used the discs once to make the images and keep them safely tucked away as an ultimate back-up.

And for those wondering, yes, I use UI icons for all game related folders and stuff. ;D

Hi Vortex,

Thanks, I never tried, because I presumed it would not work and I dislike installing stuff that does not work. Althoug most of the time when something doesn't work the way I like I just do a system restore and everything should be ok.
Anyway. I'll try to make this work, because it makes me feel more safe concerning the state of the disk.

And I'd like to take another ten years with this game.

I use Daemon Tools lite for mounting my discs.  You have have it automatically load the disc up do you don't have to. You can also created as many virtual drives as you feel like to load other games.  Some games don't work with this (CnC3 is one) but many do.

I found out that I can have up to 8 virtual discs. They are mounted automatically every startup of the computer if I like. It's good enough for me. At least very convenient.

I use Alcohol 52% (paid version) its now a bit old as the company has replaced it with Alcohol 120%

I've never had a problem with it, but I only use it for my SimCity Games.

10 years of SC4! Wow, I feel so old.

I remember when I first played the original SimCity, it was like a dream come true. No more making roads in the dirt in my backyard and drawing maps in my schoolbooks - I could actually have a functioning city on our computer! My life was forever changed. ;D

Regarding your question, Frank: I've recently moved overseas for a bit and didn't bring my SC4 discs with me, so I purchased the deluxe version off Steam. It works well. But I'm glad to know I have the discs at home as a back up.

What with all the hype about the new version, I've found myself back here some 4 years after my last visit, and it still feels like home (nice to see the old faces are still around too - hi guys!)

I'm seriously considering re-installing the game, but I don't know if I can face the endless task of mod collecting & organisation I'll inevitably get sucked into if I do. &mmm

Welcome back. I have also been away for 4 years. After reading about the mess called SimCity 2013 I decided to re-install SC4 just a month ago. Compared to what we had 10 years ago it feels like a new game to me. I found out that thinking about collecting mods and plugins was worse than actually doing it. Start small with just the things that you can't live without and take it from there.

I just made one little mistake by installing the BAT tool as well just to check out some old unfinished projects. It looks like they will end up being finished projects instead.  :D

Long time, no see!  It's good to see you again, Freedo.  :)  This game seems to always bring the community back together, no matter what new games may be released.  I just don't see this happen on non-SC4 sites that I've visited or lurked on.  I suggest you re-install the game and take your time on plugin collection.  Trust me, it'll be worth it.  I've had to do so after a number of HDD crashes, although I find myself having to collect fewer plugins each time because my backups have become more comprehensive with all of that practice.  ;D

It's cool to see SimCity 1 brought up, too, since I've been playing it a little the past few days to celebrate 10 years of SC4 as well as get in a little tongue-in-cheek ( :P ) at a couple of my current least favorite game developers.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to each and every CC author here and on other SC4 sites for their time, skill and dedication that they have put in over the years. Without you the game would not have got to 10 years, so here's to the batters, the modders, and the lotters!

And to all those whom create all those BATS, MODS, Maps, etc. and making them available to the gaming community.

And to sites like this that continue to support this great game.

Thank You.   &apls
