The Avolon quad, sir?

Why Jeeves, you cut me off, how rude.  But yes Jeeves, the Avolon quad, see that fiery sword of Excalibur pointing to the lake?  On the shores of Lake Excalibur I shall build my castle Jeeves,  The Round Castle.

That's the round table sir...

Ah, what's that Jeeves?

And I don't believe Excalibur was a fiery sword sir.

Did you say something Jeeves?

Just mumbling sir.

Well quit mumbling Jeeves, I've got a million things to do and your just mumbling?  Come on Jeeves, let's get going.

Where are we going Mayor?

I've got to see a horse about a man.

That's a man about a horse.

Are you still mumbling Jeeves?

Beautiful map, and it's apparent you've put in some time prepping it for the roll-out.  This should be a great region to watch develop.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the nice comments.  If you read the hokie story line, you find yourself having a part in the story for your comments.  (I stole the idea)  A little about the map.  It's a downloaded map of Overton County, Tenn.  Where I lived for the last 3 years.  Of course Overton County is not square so a little was cut off here and there and some of the surrounding counties leaked in the edges.  It is 8 x 8 big city squares.  I ran it through Mircodem (duh) and lowered the elevation for, one: to make it easier to play, I am no slope genus; and two: I got quite a few flat tops in the southeast where the Cumberland Plateau rises.  I then stuck it in Landscape Designer and raised the water level so I could have some ocean.  All the water up north comes from the Dale Hollow Lake though it is greatly exaggerated.

I am using the Meadowshire Terrain with the Meadowshire River Tree Controller.  It does all the work and Cycledogg gets all the credit for it.  It does look great!  Just throw in some rocks and logs and SC4 never looked so good.

I will 'cheat' whenever I need to, mainly to regroup simoleons when I try stuff that I have to get right more than once.  I would like to grow this region as realisticly as possible so keeping in budget is something that Mayor Collins and Jeeves will have to consider.  I've got 8 pics ready to get to you in the morning's update.

Thanks again for the nice comments and watch out for yourself in the story.  If you want a particular job or whatever, let me know and I'll "Make it so."  Oh, I'm a mayor, not a star ship captain.  I'll need some kickbacks guys...

Looks like a pretty kool map petercintn,
I'm really interested in this diary.    I was raised not to far from ya'll.   I grew up in Coffee Co. (Manchester, TN) and graduated from college at Tennessee Tech.     So I have travelled around that land you are working on now.       I was trying to figure out where things were on the map based on my memory of the area.    I didn't realize how long it has been since I was there.   LOL       Best of luck on this.   I'll keep checking on it to see how it's going.

Hey, hi!

QuoteI've got 8 pics ready to get to you in the morning's update.

I've got my coffee mug on the counter, the coffe's ground and the pot is primed.  Ready to roll when you are.

I read elsewhere that you're headed for Grandpa-dom if not there already.  I've got seven, and due to a sad family situation have adopted two.  They say that the great thing about being a grandparent is that there's all the joys of parenthood plus the kids go home at the end of the day- those folks are all wet.  Some of mine don't go home, and that's just fine by me.

'Grats to you and your family, and thanks for sharing what looks like a fine and nicely thought through MD.

Before the update, I'd like to make comment.  I have been a big lurker at Simtropolis and the only other place I frequent is DFI-Street.  Not to say anything bad about these places (I dearly love Simtropolis) their are a few that have ruined my posting experiance at these sites.  DFI-Street has gone down because of conflict, and I very seldom post at Simtropolis because, well just because.  I am not much of a SC4 player and one of my hopes is to become better at this great game, so why not put it out there and see what people say.

I've only been here a short while, and I'd like to thank all of you for making me feel so very welcome.
'nough said, I think you catch my drift.  Now I'm going to double post. &mmm

Looks like we're ready to go Jeeves.  King Alek has given the A-OK to our plans and Dedgren has secured all the necessary supplies and your_address_here has secured the transportation.   Sebes has drawn up the plans for the mill and the temporary dock and we will bunk on the ship until our quarters are ready at the mill.  We will set up the dock and the mill up north where there is a deep water bay.  Thundercrack will be our environmental advisor and Fred-Ginger is our domestic advisor.  I anticipate everything to run smooth, I think we have planned well Jeeves.  Let's go, the trip shall be long and I hope you don't get seasick and ruin my trip.  Take some pills will you.

I'd like to give you a pill.

Still mumbling Jeeves?  You should be assertive and speak up.

I'll do that, Mayor.

During the long trip to Avolon, Mayor Collins seldom came from his quarters and when he did, a pale, greenish face greeted all.  Jeeves seemed to smile a lot.

A year later:

Sebes has done an outstanding job engineering the mill and the dock don't you think Jeeves?

Excellent Mayor Collins.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg201.imageshack.us%2Fimg201%2F1701%2Fallons001mediumgp3.jpg&hash=a9a51415754a8fd79427b5dc38972aaf1aab1630)

We're ready for our first load of stuff at the dock.  Fred-Ginger and thundercrack will inspect the cargo, while your_address_here will get it where it needs to go.  I hope King Alek has sent some good cognac with his orders, make them easier to swallow.  Ha ha ha, I crack myself up, Jeeves.

Yes sir, you are cracked.

Your right Jeeves, we need to get cracking.

Sebes and Dedgren are starting to build the concrete factory, Jeeves.  We won't be stopped now.

Mayor, your_address_here has mapped out the network and is ready to build some roads, sir.

Excellent, Jeeves.

A few months later.

Sir the supervisor housing and the blue collar housing is finished.  Still kind of bare but livable.
I think I'll get pvarcoe to fly over and get some pictures of Allons.  Get me the phone Jeeves.

Well Jeeves, we have a little town.  Let's grow.

Mayor Collins sent a dispatch to King Alek requesting some extra expertise.  The mayor specifically requested the renown CPA Gaston and the genius architect Bat.  After some consideration he also ask for the best chef in all of the Kingdom, Fury.  Jeeves recounted to his freinds what Mayor Collins said. "I'm tired of eating crap from the dirt, I need someone who can fix me some real kitchen food."

that is a great little village although a tip would be to try and avoid square farms.... just take your dezone tool and clip the edges int any shape you like. you will find that, when bordered by trees, they are fam or pleasing to the eye and more realistic to boot.

i will try and find some pics if you like..

Post by: Alek King of SC4 on January 19, 2007, 07:24:18 AM
i can only see a couple pics, but as to the square farms i do not understand the prejudice against them, a quick trip around windows local live will show all but very arid areas (they use pivot irrigation) are divided up in squares.  One big however on the topic, remember that even though SC4 limits your building angles, by using trees, you can fake having square like plots at different angles.

When ever I start a new city I imagine how it would begin to develop as if pioneers had just arrived.  So glad to see you started the same way.  As to the "square" farms, I think they are just fine, and more importantly, what we in the USA are use to.

Lovely town. Its got a great rural and rustic feel... which is I think what you were trying to achieve so good work. I look forward to seeing this develop and progress. My only beef is the mill manager housing is a tad repetative. Otherwise, great work!

Very beautiful and realistic region you have here. I took a trip to the Missouri/ Tenn./ Arkansas area recently and it does look like that, especially the lakes. As for the farms, "realistic" depends on where you live. Like in Europe the farms tend to be more irregular shaped and smaller and in the US tend to be squarer (if thats a word) and larger. Anyway, you've done a great job so far, looking forward to more.

Thanks for all the comments and help.  Here's some more 'fleshed out pics of Allons for you while I work on Allons' sister city, Tiler Point.  Eventially Allons is hopefully going to become an industrial-shipping area.  But it needs infrastructure.

Gaston: Julia just graduated in Dec.  Got engaged and after 5 & 1/2 years she decided on a teaching degree in english.

bulldog: I fell in love with the foothills area as a boy on our trips to New Market, TN; where some of my familiy hails.  Couldn't make a decent living here, but now that I'm retired, Tenn is home.

jacqulina: not half as nice as yours.

emilin: thanks, hope you like this one better.

threestooges: greastest comedy act ever!  I'm really thinking about giving up the hoky story, don't think I can sustain it for as long as this diary is planned.  I'm really doing this to give me a reason to actually complete a big region.

Giligone: That's what I'm going for.  There may be a city one day in Avolon, but all regions start out rural.  At least I guess so.

mightygoose: Thank's for the help.  Sometimes your too close to your own work so it helps to have objective views, I shall work harder!  I hope you like the way the farms look now that they are more mature.

sebes: thanks for the new post. Keeps me going!  Ah... don't know the problem, I see them all.  I'm using IE7 and the direct link at imageshack.  Anyone else having this problem?  A few details and it should be easily fixed.

thundercrack83:  I will work you to the bone!  And pay peanuts. (Evil laugh)

Fred_Ginger:  I agree.

Alek King of SC4:  Oh King of my region, I will obey and read aforementioned thread as soon as the update you require is posted.  (grovels)  Are you using IE7?  I've heard Firefox may sometimes have a problem with IE7... but I don't know, hope it gets sorted out.  More feedback will help.

Wow, it looks as if imageshack updated there site.  maybe the pics are back up now, I can see them fine.

Now to the update

Now that is a nice set of shots. I really like your use of dirt streets and dirt trails.
And the fencing to border your farms is really well done.
It gives a much more finished appearance.

Great update; although now that I think about it, unusually sparse on the storyline ;)

Great farms! They are so rich in detail. Very aesthetic. Thats a neat water tower too, I've not seen it before. Good work, keep it up.

They are a good comedic team. They don't always get the credit they deserve. If you like them, I would also be interested to hear your opinion of the Marx Brothers. But enough about them for now... there is another update already. The farms look great (especially the 10th one down). I have always like the look of rolling countryside, especially the look of central California and it's Wine Country. You dockyard looks very realistic being sheltered by the island the way it is. Are you planning to expand onto/terraform it? I like the sidewalk mod (jrj?) and the powerpoles you are using. They add nice touches without standing out. Finally, Though the McDonald's does seem a bit dumpy/trashy/etc, the way the surrounding buildings are borders by those bushes and flowering meadows more than makes up for it. So the storyline may suffer, it just leaves more room for more pics (which are looking good so far), keep it up.

The pictures that I can see this time are wonderfull - the farms, the fields, the sandroads.

I can again not see all: If the Avalon banner is the first picture, I cannot see the 2nd, 6th, 7th, 9th and 15th one. I am using IE7 as well, on Windows XP.

sebes: I hope this isn't something you have tried already (but it's new to me): if the "red cross" you are referring to is a small red "x" in a box at the top left of where the pic should be, try right-clicking it and selecting "show picture." I have a similar problem from time to time and it just seems to me that the page times-out before all pictures have a chance to load. If that doesn't fix the problem, just ignore this like it never existed.

Beautiful pics, Peter, from one farming afficionado to a person who is clearly another.

I'm not so sure on losing the story- you may have been headed for having the first Dada [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dada) MD.  And that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

...I mean, who else is doing anything that literally cries out for Devo [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devo) to do the soundtrack.

This is great stuff!

I am glad to have settled in Allons! It's a wonderfull little place. The BLS-Slaytforkmill is one of my favourites... how did you know?

That's some impressive farms you've got going there.

And looking at it I'm wondering of you just solved the dirt road problem that David (dedgren) brought up in 3RR, or is it just a trick? I see transit enabled dirt road lots that connect to the Trolca streets (or maybe it's not Trolca streets at all?) without creating sidewalks. How did you do that?

Yes it's trolica's simple dirt roads, but I didn't solve that problem.  Thanks for giving me a whole lot of credit I don't deserve.  See I can't even spell.  I'n not sure I know where you're seeing this, but I did download some TE lots based off of deadwood's trails, but for the life of me I can't find where I put them to reference them.  They came in two sets, the TE ones and non-TE one so you could fake out the idea that it was all TE.  I hope that's what you seeing.  The lots are called 'Transit enabled farm paths' or close to that.  Just found it - 'drmk_rural_trail_set' is the folder name.  Close won't I?

Mayor Collins, it's go..., ah, your back.

Hello Jeeves.  King Alek had this for you.

Well thank you!

No, thank the king Jeeves.  So how have things been going here?  Oakdale and Tiler Point still growing?

Of course, sir.

I've had some tough times Jeeves.  Both the SOMY Corp and NOB are trying to get rich off of me!  Toughest negotiations I've ever won.  The PEG Group were much nicer.

Good, is The PEG Group going to do the garabage dock?

I said they where nice, even trying to sell me on a garabage deal where they say the garbage gets dumped into the, how'd they put that, the edge of nowhere.

What's that?

I have no idea, Jeeves.  Told them I don't want no hocus pocus in my town.  We'll settle for old fashion push that trash on someone else.

How did the Cobb and HK meetings go?

Just fine, Jeeves, just fine.  Everything is a go.  Now that there's over 100,000 sims in the Avolon region, the big companys are starting to see the books in black.  Plus the fact that we are making a profit now helps.  How's the mines?

Digging sir.

Just grand Jeeves. let's take a ride to Tiler Point.

Look, that must be the moose messiah.

Peter-

QuoteWhere are we going Mayor?
I've got to see a horse about a man.
That's a man about a horse.
Are you still mumbling Jeeves?

Classic, just classic...

Classic what, I don't know.  You're breaking new ground here.

* * *

The 64 quads (slight bow, thanks) look marvelous.  They appear to be prime for SC4 development.  There probably isn't enough money in the world to buy up all that waterfront property and every bit of it is yours.

Looking at the efforts to date, I'm sure it will be used wisely.

...uh-oh, this is turning into fan mail...

Anyway, go see that horse...or man...or whatever.  Just come back soon with another update- we'll be watching for one.

Hey Peter.

What a great update. A bit of story, a lot of pics, who could complain  #stsfd·

The Tiller Point shots are excellent. You have a unique style (that's a good thing).

I love the countryside shots, your farms look super.
I believe those dirt trails are created by Darmok and are TE.

Nice work with the ploppable water.
I have a hard time getting it to look natural.

Your mention of a possible roundabout makes sense to me.
It would look very natural in that spot.

Really enjoyed the update, Thanks!

Mayor Collins would like to honor several of the great sims that have been vital to the success of Avolon.
As always, Alek, King of SC4 is the first to thank.  Then I would like to thank my group of valued administrators, starting with the head admin - dedgren.  He heads up the most impressive staff short of Simtropia.  Transportation Minister - your_address_here;  Domestic Advisor - Fred_Ginger;  Environmental Minister - thundercrack83;  sebes - Contractor General;  bat - General Architech;  fury00 - Food & Drug Minister;  pvarcoe - Minister of the Sky;  Giligone - Minister of War & Peace;  M4346 - Pope of the Church of the Moose;  Gaston - Minister of Agriculture;  KooriSim123 - Foreign Minister;  mightymoose - the messiah?;  threestooges - Minister of Propaganda;  emilin - Education Administrator;  jaculina - Parks Administrator; bulldog2010 - Wildlife Minister;  nedalezz - Minister of Police;  CabraBuitre - Health Minister;  Wamiod - Minister of Fire & Water;  Wouanagaine & jeroni - two of the best known city planners on loan from King Alek.

Ahem... Ah... Your all fine sims, the finest.  The region of Avolon, well, the city of Oakdale itself is over 1/3 million souls now and growing.  Without sebes, bat and dedgen, all of you helped as much as they, the mines would not be digging and the steel mill would have no ore.  We would have no region.  Why with the steel mill, the saw mills, the concrete plant, and the labor of good sims, we can build anything.  We can do anything!

Small cheers almost rose above the crowd.

And for all that you do...

The crowd began to chant 'This bud's...

I will have the grandest staduim built that you can play ball in.  Mayor Collins interrupted.

for yo... what!?  We want free beer!'  The crowd noise notched up a bit.  The mayor mistook this for approval.

Give it up for your Aministration, sims, let's have a big round of applause!

The crowd died and buried themselves on their way home.

Hey Jeeves!  Grab pvarcoe and let's take a trip to Union Hill.

Right away your mayorship, sir.

Well, those mines and the power plant look great...But, let's make sure they're environmentally friendly or I'm going to have to send some of the boys from the Ministry down to take care of it! Great update, I'll be looking forward to more!

Of course they are environmentally friendly (or at least that's what I can tell everyone). Propaganda minister... excellent...just what I need... power of speech...heh heh. If the mines fill with water, we'll call them lakes and make it a tourist attraction (assuming environmental concerns are met. At any rate, great stuff so far. However, in the 5th pic, It might be good to see something on the slopes between the houses on the right side of the town. The hills look steep, and it seems that it would take more than just grass roots to hold the soil in place (perhaps a wall or some trees). The last pic looks quite nice too. I'm not usually a fan of big cities (though there are some really good ones that I have seen), but that night pic really looks good. Keep it up, and I'll keep the propaganda coming.

From the desk of the Vice Mayor

While the mayor has been away (I understand that he is having a resort built in Shiloh, but I know better, not that he isn't overseeing the construction, but I bet he's doing it drunk from a casino) he has called me and asked that I get the Oakdale update to the Board of Ministers and Administrators.

For nearly 60 years, Oakdale has grown into a reasonably healty city of around 1/3rd million sims.  In Old Town there is rising unempolyment and a few buildings have been abandoned.  Many of the buildings in Oakdale have fallen into disrepair.  But all in all, the city is doing fine, even if I think the mayor has some design flaws.  He says the city will be restructured when he releases his moratorium on land grants.  I wonder about Mayor Collins at times.

The other problems as I see it.  The small regional airport which has served us so well is overloaded.  We need a bigger airport.  I believe that Oakdale is ready for a big time pro stadium, but so far the mayor won't shell out the franchise fee.  The bus system is doing well, but we need to consider another means of public transportation as the growing unemployment in Old Town suggest.  I think there are a few zoning problems, but I've told you what the mayor said and i'll add this, 'as long as it's making a profit' which seems to be our mayor's only concern.  But as I have stated, the city is doing well for the most part and is making a nice profit.

I submit to you some photos for the record of Oakdale

We requested this Satellite Photo from the Sim Kingdom.

Some glich kept the photos from Up Town from showing up.  We will have to schedule another fly-by to get the photos.

The mayor has also ordered me to have traffic and financial reports for the the four cities ready for release.  I will have these reports to the Board by the first of the week.  The mayor has aslo asked me to foward this note to the Board.

Dear Board Members,

I would like to take this chance to thank all of you for your fine work.  I'm am overseeing the construction of a lakeside retreat for the enjoyment of the board and myself, exclusively.  We may even let Jeeves come and bartend for us if he's a good boy.  Ha ha, that's a joke, of couse we'll let Jeeves come bartend for us.  The casinos are up and running and making us a handsome profit.  While you vacation at the retreat here, any casino in Shiloh will gladly serve your each and every need, on the house.  Just remember to bring plenty of cash to gamble with, it's yours to win or lose.  But we'll get you fed & drunk for free.

On the business side, I am ready to lift the ban from land grants.  I think the region now has a sturdy enough base to push out and be stable.  Plus I'd like to get the balance in our favor in the growing food/shipping in food scale.  Right now we ship in over 85% of our food from Sim Kingdom.  Plus, the Somy Corp is ready to build docks in Allons, to increase our shipping capicity, which is rather low right now.  I am being hammered by the good sims of Oakdale and else where about the waiting time and service of our regional airport.  So I have ordered Jeeves to work up a report for me as how to best go about the new airport, which I will aprove as soon as I am satisfied with what plans we have.

We are profitable, and all is good.  That is the Offical Mayor Decree.

Mayor Impervious Supreme Collins

Out of the many great parts of this update, I wanted to mention one thing that seemingly went unmentioned. In the Central Region: downtown district (specifically the 8th pic down): there is a school that blends so nicely into the surrounding structures, yet manages to maintain its unique boundary. Might I ask what the school's mascot is? Good luck with the development and expansion, I'm sure the city can take it.

Here's a closeup of the school I believe you mentioned.  As I have not even thought about a mascot for this school, please, have the honor of giving the school a mascot.  I'll then feature it somehow.

...Mascots are real trouble these days, Mr. Mayor...

You can't have "Indians" or "Redskins" or "Warriors" because the Native Americans will get upset.

You can't have "Bears" or "Hawks" or "Wolves" because the folks from PETA will get upset.

You can't have "Canucks" or "Fighting Irish" or the like because ethnic groups will get upset.

You can't have "Wizards" or "Demons" because poorly informed muggles will get upset.

About the only mascot names that are not controversial are the "Scrambling Cockroaches" and the "Amoebic Dysentery."  Although these too may yet prove controversial...

Remember the ancient Chinese curse...

...may you live in interesting times...

...and that we do, Mr. Mayor.  That we do.

That's the one I'm talking about. In regards to the mascot (thanks for letting me offer my choice):
-In keeping with the name of Avolon (similar to Avalon) I would offer up the knights (in reference to King Arthur).
-Secondly, given the yellow path with tracks near the top of the pic (near the main building), there appear to be bear tracks: this suggests some sort of bear be named (Grizzly, Polar, Panda (not the most fearful thing you could choose), etc).
-Finally, in the spirit of my present school, I offer our mascot of the Lions.

I am partially leaning towards the last, but I think I shall leave the final decision to you (since you will have to do an update based on it). Our mascot (the lion) came about as a result of donations by Louis B. Mayer of MGM Studios (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyola_Marymount_University#Lion_mascot). What first struck me was that it somewhat reminded me of our law school in downtown L.A. So there is my two cents on the matter. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Thanks for the quick response too.

haha cool

as for the team name, I used to live in south georgia and a team there was the Albany Syrupmakers :D so who knows,  maybe that would work?

Again, well done. I especially like the cattle farm and its "alternative energy" plant. I've tried cattle farms a number of ways, but this is the best way to do it that I have seen so far. If I may ask... what is the structure just under the cattle auction area in tithe 2nd pic of the cattle farm? It all looks good, and I particularly enjoy the overviews (traffic, budget, etc) of the towns/cities in the area. Good stuff.

I agree with threestooges. The overview shots are great. I really enjoy those types of shots.
The farming and rural stuff is excellent too.
Love the shot of tons of cows!
Really nice stuff Peter.

Great MD
I like the farms with all the details; most notably the cattle ranch.
Nice mayor retreat (i should be a farmer to live in such a nice place) and clearly laid out overviews.

Overview

The students mill around the break area.

Some students have started arriving this morning.  The traffic cops are there patroling the parking lot.

A day care center has been established in some of the unused rooms of the gym.  At first, to
accommodate the teachers and adults wishing to get their belated HSD.  Then a few students
wished not to quit school so now any one affilated with the school may enjoy this service.

Let's go into one of the classrooms, the history class.

Mr. Simpleton
'As you are well aware, Sim World is a neverending plain.  At least no one has found an end,
and we've been pretty far.  This is natural, considering that Sims do not die of natural
causes.  We must have a never ending supply of everything if young sims such as yourself are
to prosper.  Our culture has evolved through 4 major revolutions, and one seemingly
neverending war with the only known alien culture, the Peeps.  But it has been hundreds of
years since the last contact with the peeps and most thoughts are that we will never
encounter them again.  Can anyone name our ancient home region?'

'Timbuktu' came in unison from the students.

'Good,' went on Mr Simpleton.  'It was in a small region called Timbuktu that simkind
learned the lessons of civilization.  We learned to build cities, and our culture began the
big push outward to the endless plain.  Can anyone name the first 'Big Five' regions of
simkind?'

'Ah, Ricaroni!' From the wiseacre in the back.  Mr. Simpleton ignored him, still looking
around.

Let's leave the history class, I'm sure you know all this anyways.

Now to the Achievemant Award.

Mayor Collins, 'Minister Threestooges, I an honored to present this Schoolastic Achievement
Award to Oakdale's Central High School.  This horrorarium... ah honorarium is a reflection
on your upstanding dedication to education.  Minister Threestooges, the award!'

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg413.imageshack.us%2Fimg413%2F7253%2Fproject1is1.jpg&hash=91f12e39cce82624cbd136c5320fc7c3deb86673)

Notes

First and foremost, I did mean schoolastic.  My warped sense of humor.

To threestooges: You have no idea how you opened up a door for me to get in that small history lesson.  It sets up a future event I've been wondering how to set up.

To emilin: Sorry, Mr Education Minister, but the Propaganda Minister trumped you on this one.

Welcome to Avolon Zaphod & Nikopol.  Hope you find a nice place to stay during your visit to Avolon.  Reminds me to put up some hotels somewhere other than Shiloh.  If you want a job here, just ask and tell me what you would like to do.  Otherwise you may end up as Garbage Minister, and not the minister for that girl singer in the band Garbage, either.  (Though I wouldn't mind ministering to her!)

At certain points, I may ask for opinions as to how to continue with some things.  I can use all the help I can get.

My high school didn't have a break area like that... Kids these days, way too pampered...

...stale candy bars and flat sodas from vending machines... Yeah, that's the ticket!

Great update as always, Peter.

Well, if that's not an honor, then I don't know what is. That's a very nice break area for a high school, but then again, nothing but the best in these parts. The history lesson had me chuckling pretty well and I'm glad to have given you the opportunity to expound on the history of the area (I was interested to hear the lesson as well...endless plain and Timbuktu... good stuff). I'll be interested to see where the story leads.

As a side note (as I am quite fond of them) Our school has not had a football team for years now (but we do have rugby), we have a running joke at our school: LMU Football: Still Undefeated. It is good to see it thrive elsewhere. With no disrespect intended I would offer that Minister emilin have the honor of naming/dedicating the next major school/college etc (what with it being his job and all).

Lastly, no need to apolgize for your
Quotewarped sense of humor
as I enjoy a good sense of humor. Also, I am always willing to offer advice (whether or not it is asked sometimes...) so please ask anything you wish.

Thank you for the award and, GO LIONS!

Took it 60 some years game time, and I've about got the rest of the quads caught up.  Thanks for the encouragement.  BTW, some cows got out in the ocean and drowned.  The mayor had to spend his ill gotten hard earned gains to put a fence along the shoreline.  (In other words, I learned to do transparent lots and now have a few fences I'm reasonably happy to put out in the middle of nowhere.)

Thanks emilin, I've 'fleshed out' Tyler Point and hope you'll enjoy how it's come out.  Next update.

threestooges: I'll get Minister emilin to name the school in Allons, which is my favorite and nobody's seen it yet.  The two schools can play for some state championship.  Thanks for the continued support, ts.

dedgren:  Thanks for the sage advice, Mr. Prime Minister.  But I've always said, "You can't please 'em all, all the time; you can't even please most of 'em most of the time; so let's just please ourselfs."  (Mayorial Speak)

Welcome to Avolon, Antoine.  The Diary of a Mad Mayor.

Nice of you to stick around, bat.  I appreciate you being one of my loyal looker ins.  I am honored, and that's to all of you, too.

Hey Rayden, hope you keep droping by.  I may just get a real handle on the game because of this MD.  Nothing like going for the gusto!  I'd be happy to recieve your and anyone else's suggestions.

Thanks for the kind words thundercrack83.  Thanks for being one of the strongest supporters of Avolon.  And there's actually a plot starting to form in the deep recesses of my cluttered mind.  Hope it can find it's way out.

Now to the Allons Docks update

Mayor Collins, the Minister of the Sky has just transmitted the information you requested.  A copy is included and there are rather quite a few images, so I'll be brief.  They are, after all, docks and speak for themselves.  With no futher ado, Mayor, I bid you ado.

The docks look great. I am curious as to how much you custom built yourself (it seems like a fair bit... and I mean that in a good way). I would specifically like to reference the 15th pic (the one with the lone rail car right before the crossing) and comment on its detail and seemlessness. I also noticed one ship in particular (toward the bottom right of the first pic) and its striking similarity to another that happens to leap to mind. All in all a well done update, take it easy and I'll be waiting to see more.

Nice port, with some very uniqute touches. I see some rarely used NOB pieces there, and a lot of pretty advanced custom lot editing. I'm expecially impressed with how you managed to use the LNG pier with nice lot content around it. It gives me some ideas... now let's just hope that the same thing can be done with fukuda's oil port, hehe...

Ha, ha, ha 6 pages of sheer joy!
I am glad I have found the opportunity to check this MD out.
Lots of laughter on: "M4346 - Pope of the Church of the Moose;    mightymoose - Messiah?"

The pics are very nice indeed, I do miss a bit the relationship between the early days and the 1/3 million population of Oakdale. It is a bit like time flies when you're having fun.

Interesting lay out of the avenue, with all those brick walls around it!

I love the cow barn and Collin's Natural Gas LOL!
The cattle ranch is a great idea, with those trees on the corners!

Well Somy Corp. has been quit bussy in Allons docks. The result looks great!
Aha, I see the mayor has brought the Aigo corp to town as well. They are great cashcows so to speak.

Swinging night at the docks. Go to the Atom.

Great MD Mayor.

Thanks and welcome to Avolon.  I think though, I'll defer the credit as it belongs to the great batters and lotters in our SC4 community.  I did, however, love to create little towns out in the back yard, get the waterhose and gouge out rivers, flood the little towns.  So SC4 is a no brainer for me.  And a lot less dirty, if more dorky.

Welcome to Avolon, Badism.  Your rep preceeds you.  Replace the cars, you say?  In a very american MD?  OK  And I like victory's lots too.  The game suffers from a lack of auditoriums fit for high school, but victory's is one of them that works well.  Like to change the bear to whatever, but I have no clue.

A wonderful harbor you have made there! Great update! Fantastic work!

Welcome back bat.  I'm glad you enjoyed it.  There's more to come, I hopefully am going to make Allons into a hugh shipping port.

Hey thunder, (hope you don't mind the abr.) I want to thank you for being one of Avolon's biggest supporters, in case I've forgotten.  It means a lot.

So many updates, so many updates! And such wonderful work!  &apls &apls

I'm sorry I haven't been around these parts of MD-land lately, why, I do not know... but I'm subscribing to this now (something I should've done a long time ago). I hope to keep up with the amazing, and fast-paced, progress of this MD!

Incredible work, as always, and such a pleasure on the eye!

Have a good one!

-M-

Thanks m.  It's aways nice to hear from the creator of such a great MD.  You know how I feel about it.  Hope you get back to working on it.  On the side, I'm going to read your work over at the Artist Corner like I promised last night, as soon as the update is fin.

Wow, Peter, I love your docks ... just amazing ... Can I ask, those large tanks ... where are they from?

I loved your high school too. :) That one looks like the municipality actually put some work into it. ;) So, not like the one I went to then.  ::)

on the Flipside, this update is for you, buddy.  Welcome to Avolon and congrats on being the 100th poser poster. (Just kidding!)  Hope you like your mansion in Tyler Point.  Oh almost forgot, the tanks are here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=14944)

Hey threestooges, I did lot out some small pads to fill in.  A few larger ones with crates. And with the great tutorial about transit enabling linkie (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=539.0) by emilin that made it child's play, I te'ed some lots.  And of course, there is more than one jeroni ship out in the harbor.  But the titantic has been retrofitted! thanks to jeroni.

From the desk of King Alek

I am sending one of my (very) personal advisors, Flipside.  He has my ear, Mayor Collins, and though I've heard nothing this time, Flipside will keep it that way.  I know you understand me.  King out.

"Darnation!  JEEVES!  JEEVES!    Hey  JEEVES!'

Jeeves about busted his rump rounding the corner into the mayor's office.

'Where are you when I need you Jeeves?  Always off, doing something or the other, I worry about you Jeeves, I really do."

"What did you want, your mayorship?"

"Jeeves, build this guy a mansion.  Out in Tyler Point, close enough not to alarm him, far enough away to get the wool out if need be.  Ah, good man Jeeves, you steady me at times, Jeeves, your greastest asset.  Yeah, build him a nice big mansion, and buy him friends, Jeeves.  Buy him friends!  MAW AAAW WAWAWA! (Evil mainc laugh.)

[Time enough for the mansion to be built goes by]

"Here's some images from the Minister of the sky, mayor.  The Flipside Estate"

"Very well, Jeeves... you just gonna stand there?  You lazy, nogood, bag of bones, go do something Jeeves."

Thanks guys and gals.

NikNik, I can't believe I forgot about you in the last update.  It is surely because I had something a little more to say about your first comment and needed to think and, well I'm scatter brained, what can I say.  Let me quote you
Quote from: NikNik on February 27, 2007, 05:24:28 AM
The pics are very nice indeed, I do miss a bit the relationship between the early days and the 1/3 million population of Oakdale. It is a bit like time flies when you're having fun.
Nik-Nik

You've found one of the many chinks in my armor.  I don't know how else to grow a city but all at once.  I also worry about playing the game, even in this MD.  I have my acceptable cheats, but I really want to make everything work within the confines of the structure of the game as I see it.  So I need the revenue from Oakdale to open up the new quads.  That 500,000 simoleans has to come from somewhere.

So I got stuck in my own logic.  How do I get out?   By letting 60 game years go by and making up the logic afterwards.  In other words, I'm winging this MD, there is no grand scheme in my mind, other than to learn by doing.  And that part, the actual goal I have in mind for this MD is coming along great.

So, I wonder how you could not miss the relationship between the early days and Oakdale's seeming instant growth, there isn't one,  and I haven't fully reconciled it in my own mind.  But it has something to do with the mayor not giving out land grants until the economy could handle it or something along that general line of BS.

So...  Welcome to the zany world in side my head NikNik.  And welcome to Avolon.  An adventure in learning.

And as to the learning part.  I have transit enabled some dirt roads, but for some reason, if I try to make a 4 way intersection out of a street and two of the TE dirt roads, the game will not do it.  When I plop the first lot, the game makes the connection to the street and adds sidewalks to that tile and the two tiles next to it.  When I plop the same lot to make the 4 way intersection, no connction is made with these three tiles, but it will connect to the street anywhere else.  Is this how the game works with created TE lots or do I need to do something else to get a 4 way intersection with the TE lots.

Here's a visual aid

Is this normal behavior for TE lots?

This is not 100% accurate, as I never tried to do it myself. On my little experience with TE lots, I learned you can not put two TE lots together facing each other. Those two are not directly facing each other, but it's like the street, when connecting and transit enabling with the first one, becomes part of that lot, does then not letting the other TE lot join together. This is pure assumption, someone more expert on that matter may explain that to you on another way.
Title: Re: Avolon
Post by: emilin on March 02, 2007, 03:27:47 PM
Hmmm... I'm not an expert either, but I think Rayden is probably right. What I think you should do to avoid this is make them oneway road enabled instead of ordinary roads. Of course then the traffic will only flow in one direction, but you should be able to make the intersection.

If I may add my part to this (and if the pictures are too much just let me know and they will be gone...I like to use illustrations when I can) but the trick with te lots seems to be how you connect them. Placing the road first does provide the problem you showed. However, after some research I think I may have found a way that works.

For this I have used 2 groups of transit: road (on the left) and streets (on the right...with the brick street mod):
-they are in a 4 point cluster to ensure the ground on all sides will be level (as all intersections must be on level ground)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg83.imageshack.us%2Fimg83%2F8237%2Fte1oc8.jpg&hash=02e92440f03cd0d2c207d242f9fa899854759621)

Next, I attach the TE lots (darmok's rural paths from the STEX) on both sides. Note interestingly that the street connects, but the road does not.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg216.imageshack.us%2Fimg216%2F8417%2Fte2kg1.jpg&hash=b16a4265a371762cb005d2c3c97279aeb1f4470b)

I ran both roads and streets perpendicular to the lots to try to connect them. Again, streets work, roads...not so much.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg213.imageshack.us%2Fimg213%2F9175%2Fte3jp4.jpg&hash=26c47e60b4513760309843a4b65655da221e32e3)

The street can then be upgraded to a road if you want (but the intersection remains as a street intersection

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg213.imageshack.us%2Fimg213%2F7549%2Fte4gp9.jpg&hash=bc307fd64bbdc421e8e73ecd49a16a2385931200)

I hope that helps. Can't wait to see what comes next.

I really don't wish to take over this section so I will be brief (and take advantage of my propaganda ministry).
Cali: The yellow lines are actually built into the game roads and as a result they are there to stay unless there is some mod that would remove them (I think the "euro texture" puts a dashed white stripe down the middle) or you can just edit them out of the picture if you really want to.

One last point on TE lots that was noted by Darmok. You cannot place TE lots back to back. Therefore, they are essentially used to put some space between the actual road and the zone you are trying to reach. The rest of the tiles would just be for eye candy.

Thanks for the thoughts.
But I am going to have to ask dedgren to put this MD out to pasture.  Not that I'm going anywhere (Hey, I heard those groans!) but I have to put this behind me.  I won't go into any long details (cheers from the crowd) but I will say how much I appreciate everyone's support.  I will still make some comments from time to time and post some pics in the show me forums, but I must slow down or suffer the consequences.  And believe it or not, there's a fair amount of stress involved in this.  My health is not good to begin with, and, well, I'm just going to shut up.  Nobody want's to hear a whiner.

Thanks again for the nice words.  Oh and thanks for all the help, I've learned enough to get the seasonal trees out of the seasonal farm street dat file.  And how to delete that pesky dome prop lot in JBM's dome prop pak that shows up in the parks menu but there is no lot file.  He made it an exemplar.  For me that's progress.

Well, Tudalu Avalon, I did no better that Arthur.

PS. threestooges thanks for the help with the TE lots.  They work great now that you've showed me how>

Although it is truly sad to see this go, I can understand the reasoning behind it and I am truly sorry that it has come to this.  &mmm

I wish you all the best of luck and good health, and want to thank you for sharing this masterpiece with us. Thank you for the effort and dedication, and I hope to see you around here often.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Regards,

- Marius

Peter, hey!

I'll leave Avolon up in the active section for another couple of days so folks can drop by and see what you're up to here.  MDing needs to be fun- if it's adding stress, well, there's many, many ways to participate around here.  I can think of one in particular, and I'd be glad to hear from you along that line.

Avolon was a fun read, and showed us some really fine skills and creativity along the way.  You can't do much better than that, my friend.

See you around the forums.

David

Sorry to see Avolon go, my friend. I am a fan of your work, but as everyone has pointed out, if it's adding stress to your life, it's better to stop. I'll be looking forward to see you around in other places here, though! Thanks for sharing Avolon with us!

It was a good story, and fun to see its development, but it IS a game and as such it should be played for fun. Stress is what you try to get away from in the game (and also around here). So, if nothing else, do what I've been doing and put a few pics here and there in the "show us your:..." thread. It has the fun of a MD without the potential, perpetual stress. Though I'll be sorry to see it go (and kind of wondering what that 'reward' was), it was a good read, and I'm sure you are not done around here yet.

Hiya Peter.

Of course we are sad to hear about putting Avalon on the backburner, but we also understand.
Many here are working on MD's ourselves, and know that it is no small commitment of time and energy.
I quite enjoyed your mix of pics and storyline...always made me smile.

In the meantime, I know we'll still see you around here.

Take care.
Phil
