Title: The " Did You Know.......?" Game
Post by: JeeKTan on October 05, 2010, 04:03:04 AM
This game is fairly simple. All you need to do is make a sentence that starts with " Did You Know.......?".

I'll start:
Do you know that Simcity 4 improves my Geography exam marks? ;D

Did you know, in Germany, northern sea, on the small isle of Norderney there are mounted 800 colourfull plates of 25 x 30 cm in a row.

What looks like a piece of art instead is a test field for traffic signs. They are exposed to the harsh climate of the northern sea and only if for 3 years they don't loose their reflection capacities and colour they get certified.

... when temperature rises in early spring in germany, toads become active and want to have sex and move to their spawning grounds. This causes several hundreds of nature conservation organisation to call many thousands of members to become active too - so to carry the toads from one side of germany's streets to the other, otherwise very mortal for toads.
This causes frequent radio announcements about local toad migration. So if you visit germany these days with your cars and you hear warnings in radio - those warnings about toads migrations aren't ment for you to focus on the road close in front of you in the late evening hours, if there might toads suddenly appearing out of the dark - but instead to watch out for people in camouflage outfit carring plastic buckets across the streets at very unexpected places in the country side. Please don't run over them.

... the olive tree is one of the oldest known symbols for eternal life. It is evergreen, can become at least 4000 years old (maybe more), and if it's burned by bushfire and seems completely dead after some years it can open shoot again. Oil from the fruits was used for lamps, giving light, body and hair care, giving beauty, and for meals, giving nutriment - so by this times covering a broad range of human needs.
In ancient greece an olive branch was handed over not only to athletes of the olympic games but on many occations. A symbol of showing respect or reverence. The meaning of this was roundabout: "May be peace with you, may you live forever."
There is a well known variation of this symbol also in the Holy Bible, when a dove brings an olive branch to Noah as a sign from God with a similar meaning. "You made it through deluge, may you find peace and a blessed life from now on." According to the Bible Noah became more than 950 years old.
In modern times the (white) dove took over the meaning of peace, which isn't entirely correct as the dove (until peace-movement messed it up) represented the spirit, the soul - in case of the Bible, the holy spirit. You may have seen on festivities, they open cages and let hundreds of doves fly up in the sky. Now you may alread guess what the meaning of this is: to set the spirit free (deliberate it from boundaries).

... in 2007 a diving robot discovered a breeding octopus 1400 meters deep before the coast of california. When the scientists got back two month later, they were suprprised the octopus was still there at the very same place still covering her eggs. So they became interested and came back again and again - in total 18 times in 52 month. And the
octopus always was there breeding since one fine day he was gone and the eggs were all empty. This - more than 4 years seems to be the overall world record in breeding time.

Also impressive is the breeding time of the TUATARA from New Zeeland

which has not only an average breeding time of 16 month but also needs 35 years until it's fully grown.

The average breeding time of a chicken (barn fowl) is 25 days.

The worlds fastest breeder instead should be the WHITE-EYE (bird) with an average breeding time of 10 days.

Did you know the Tuatara isn't really a reptile but a sphenodont.
Tuataras haven't changed for over 200 million years.
And while new fancy species like reptiles, birds and eventually mamals evolved from sphenodonts, Tuatara stayed the same.

The Tuatara is the only sphenodont still alive after >200 million years and should by all rights be extinct / evolved into something else by now.
No wonder they have a long breeding time, they're still living by Mesozoic time  :D

... since 2016 the FBI and Swiss Authorities investigate a financial scandal about the 1Malayan Development Berhard, a fund run by the malayan gouvernement for economic development of poor regions.
By then the fund had debts of 11 billion dollars and it was revealed almost 4 billion dollars were removed illegally for personal gain of gouvernement members and transfered to many bank accounts in Switzerland, France and
the United States. F.e. it is known that, with the help of Goldman Sachs, 155 million $ were given to Leonardo Di Caprio and Red Granite to fund the movie "Wolf of Wall Street" – which is a movie about how people get corrupted by money.
However, except of a luxury yacht here and a hollywood movie there - in great parts the money laundering couldn't be resolved until today.

... in his latest exhibition french artists Philippe Parreno is only the architect but the main artist is barm. With measuring  different parameters of the barm like temperature, pH, oxygen content, concentration of the barm cells it is indicated the mood of the barm. And with the help of a computer the barm drives light and sounds, the form and movement of all sculptures and even the window blinds (how much daylight to add to the rooms). So basically the whole exhibition is an expression of the mood of the barm - if it feels good today or bad.

...2018 formular one world championship consists of 21 races taking place on 5 continents which makes it necessary to travel 160.000 Kilometers in 9 month. For all teams having the same conditions and no one gains advantage not only every single screw and screwdriver but also the race cars themselves must be shipped alltogether (in a time frame less than 9 hours). Which means in total 600 tons of material packed in 100 containers on 100 trucks must be moved by 240 employees in less than half a day. Those trucks sometimes are loaded on 6 Boeing 747 cargo planes or - if there's enough time between two races - on two over sea cargo ships.

Did you know...

there is a small island in northern Netherlands called Texel, 29 km long, 9 km wide, carring 12.000 habitants and 14.000 sheeps. It's a special race, the famous Texel-Sheep. Well it's not so famous for its wool, maybe a little fame is for the delicious meet, but mostly it's known for the very special shape. Because of the rough and windy weather it is very squat, with an almost flat back.

Now, quite often it happens, f.e. when those Texel-Sheeps fall asleep, they fall on their back. But because of their anatomy they can't get back on their feet by themselves. And if nobody helps they will die within half a day because of a circulary shock.

Therefore every tourist coming to the isle of Texel gets a brochure and a short instruction how to roll over sheeps. And this way - thanks to the many tourist coming to this little island well educated in first aid for sheeps - thousand of those animals can be safed each year.

the Red Baron, Baron von Richthofen, a good looking young guy, was the most hunted bachelor of the german empire? Every young woman wanted to meet him. But from the writing they left we know that he was a real superbore sitting with them on the couch always talking about his shootings and killings and aviation adventures. From the many women meeting him never ever was reported a single erotic experience - they all told the same about him: only talking about shooting and weapons. This might explain why he was some kind of sex symbol by his time but never got married.

... the Mercedes Benz 600 Pullman-Landaulet - this is the convertible version of the famous Mercedes Pullman - was based on a custom made Pullman exclusevely for Pope Paul VI. and was developed closely according his demands?

Not only the roof on the back could be removed but also the middle part of the coach and the last doors, the 'pope doors' became 25 cm longer by his demand. Also the whole roof part was liften by 7 cm.

So the very first Pullman-Landaulet had only 4 doors  - and to my knowledge it is the only Pullman-Landaulet that exists having only four door without the middle part(of in total 57 built).

This very first exemplar of the Pullman-Landaulet was devliered on september 10. 1965 to the pope.

8 days later, on september 18. 1965, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, Queen of England, landed on the airport of Köln/Bonn, visting Germany. She was taken by a second version of the Pullmann-Landaulet from the airport to the hotel, seems the developers of Mercedes Benz had built parallel without the 'pope stuff' so with a more regular cabin. You can see the shorter. regular back doors and the space between front and back doors, also regular baack seats:

So this was the first time the Mercedes Pullman-Landaulet was seen in public and many well known people phoned like Elvis Presley, Leonid Breschnew and Elizabeth Taylor the next day to order a Pullman-Landaulet too.
So many people today believe it was the German State first with Queen Elizabeth to be the first to be transported in this brand new car. This isn't entirely true. The first owner was Pope Paul VI. who even gave some ideas to build it.

The "Aletschgletscher" in Switzerland is the biggest glacier of the Alps and therefore very closely observed by scientists. Therefore it's known the glacier shortens 23 meters each year.
But since summer 2017 local authorities warn to visit the whole area at all. Those scientist observing the glacier discovered that with the disappearing of the ice it seems also pressure against the hillside is lost that used to stabilize the mountains. The whole mountain range declined by several degrees, deep chasms showed up in the last years and great parts of the whole valley is in danger to colapse.

according to UBS there are living 2158 Billionaires on this planet. The amount of billionaires in China grew from 318 to 373 in 2017. In the year 2000 there was recorded the first chinese billionaire.

But no one wants to be upper class. If you ask millionaires and billionaires most of them believe they are middle class people. A survey in austria amongst the 10 percent most rich people living there uncoverd that actually not a single one agreed to be rich. Instead 100 percent believed they are some kind of "well situated middle class".

Another actual example is the german politician Friedrich Merz, who wants to be next head of the CDU, following cancelor Angela Merkel. In a recent interview he was asked if he is upper class or middle class. And he said, he's just a normal middle class guy. Later in the interview he was asked if he's a millionaire. First he said, that isn't important. When the journalist insisted he had to confess that he is.

isotope dating shows the age of diamonds can vary from 100 million years up to 4,25 billion years.

In 1755 german philosopher Immanuel Kant wrote a "Theory about Heaven" an said the planets of our solar system did originate from a giant rotating cloud of dust. This is still the actuall and scientific explanation for the origin of our solar siystem. In 2010 the age of our solar system was proved by isotope dating to be 4,5682 billion years old.

Funny thing: the most valuable, most interesting diamonds regarding "eternalness" aren't used for jewelry. They have enclosures and are called impure.
But exactly those impure diamonds are the best storytellers. As they keep things inside and did carry information from the beginning of our world. An information memory of an age of 4,25 billion years. And still working. That's a world record, I guess?

... didn't know how to fly to south in winter times and so - when they were released to the wild the next winter they all died because of this knowledge missing.

This changed in 2018 when two fearless women, who have raised a bunch of european hermit ibis climbed a light plane and showed their birds how to evitate dangers and to arrive sane in southern europe.

Actually the birds followed them for  more than 1000 kilometers and learned the missing knowledge from humans.

Still we have to see if they manage to travel alone next winter or if they will need aerial escort on a regular basis.

But did you know ...

"Where is the love" by the Black Eyed Peas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpYeekQkAdc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpYeekQkAdc)) and "Go West" by the Pet Shop Boys (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GER396B6M7w (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GER396B6M7w)) sounds so similar because both did simply use the harmonies from the same source, Pachelbel's Canon:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmmiZ4Lk-tA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmmiZ4Lk-tA).

And the famous ballad "Questions" by the Manfred Mann's Earthband (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvvstrKLvts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvvstrKLvts)) is a cover of Franz Schubert's Impromptu  Op.3, III.Movement (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_z9oSn-eIM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_z9oSn-eIM)).

And how funny to know when Radiohead is performing "Exit Music For a Film" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0FavvK7La8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0FavvK7La8)) it's nothing else than a cover of Chopin's Prelude No. 4 (Chopin - Prelude No. 4 in E Minor (http://chopin%20-%20prelude%20no.%204%20in%20e%20minor)).

No surprise it may be that Queen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHP-qgzUVLM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHP-qgzUVLM)) used famous melodies from opera (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hxonfpfuTY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hxonfpfuTY)).

the oldest letter of application that still exists today dates back to the year 1487 and was written by nobody less than Leonardo da Vinci. By this time Leonardo was living in Florence and after big success with sculptures, architecture and paintings he got monetary problems because there was rumors and gouvernal investigation about his homosexuality and everybody was afraid to engange him as by this (dark) times homosexuality was a terrible crime.

So he wrote a letter of application to the Duke of Milan but as he knew there was no big interest for artists he wrote that he was a very experienced engineer of military machinery - which was a complete lie. He even painted some of this machinery which today are quite famous but most probably he only copied these strange medieval tanks and catapults from other peoples books.

But his letter of application had success and soon he could do art again.

So if you ever wrote a letter of application not entirely true about your skills you shouldn't be too much worried about. Even a genius like Leonardo da Vinci did fib about his skills in the very first application letter we know about.

...there is a mysterious ring, shrouded in legend, that is passed for more than 200 years from one actor to the next when he dies. The wearer of the ring keeps it lifelong and chooses always the most worthily actor amongst the next generation to become his sucessor. First known wearer was August Wilhelm Iffland (1759 - 1814) from whom the ring got its name "Iffland Ring".

Last wearer was swiss actor Bruno Ganz, who passed away on february 19. 2019. Still it isn't known to whom the ring will be passed on. The sealed letter with the ring inside is part of the last will of Bruno Ganz which wasn't opened yet.

the worst smelling chemical substance is Thioacetone ([CH3]2CS). It's so terrible smelling that until today it isn't deeply studied ... because no one wants to.

In 1889, an attempt to distill the chemical in a laboratory in Freiburg, Germany was followed by hundreds of cases of vomiting, nausea and unconsciousness in an area with a radius of 750 meters outside the laboratory due to the smell. The city was evacuated.

In 1967 two scientists from Esso Laboratories in Oxford tried again to destill Thioacetone. Sadly the kork popped from the test tube. Even they pulled it immediatly back both scientists were framed. For two month they had tostay isolated from work and family and society because just getting closer to ohter persons made those vomiting or faint.

It's because of the odor why Thioacetone is counted amongst the most dangerous chemicals on this planet.

that the story about the Thioacetone has many features in common with the story of the funniest joke in the world discovered by Ernest Scribbler. The joke was so funny that he died ... laughing. Since this occurred during WWII, the British military were particularly taken by its offensive possibilities so all through the winter of 1943 they had translators working, in joke-proof conditions, to try and produce a German version of the joke.

They worked on one word each for greater safety. During the translation one of them saw two words of the joke and spent several weeks in hospital. But apart from that things went pretty quickly, and they soon had the joke in a form which the allied troops couldn't understand but which the Germans could. This proved to be a decisive factor in turning the tide for the Allies.

outside of SC4 community DAMN is a very interesting project: the , Disaster Alert Mediation using Nature. This project is led by Professor Martin Wikelski, ornithologist and behavioral scientist.

Worked up curiosity by sicilian shepards he mounted GPS-based motion detectors he had reviously used on birds on a rare race of goats grazing on the hillslopes of Mount Etna. Collecting data for several years he could prove that those goats days before a big eruption of the volcano changed behavior and move more and change their location.

So DAMN is all about to understand how animals have a presentiment for natural desasters and how their behavior could be used for an early warning system.

Did you know,

the museum of modern art in Mannheim is not far away from the BASF, which I try to recreate at the moment? No. Stop. Wrong Story.  :-[

Did you know,

the museum of modern art in Mannheim features one of my most adored sculptures, the big fish by Constantine Brancusi. Oops. Where is my mind? Sorry. Wrong story again.

But did you know ...

the museum of modern art in Mannheim was founded out of nothing with the donations of a jewish couple named Julius and Henriette Aberle in 1907. So the task for the first directors of the museum was clear - to build up a collection from scratch and so they bought actual art during the first decades of the last century. Which was a very lucky coincidence as we know today - those were the decades of the "classic modern" and many of the artists like Munch, Manet, Klee, Ernst, Lembruck became famous.

But things changed and Nazis took over and they couldn't stand modern art at all and they fired the old director, collecting modern art, immediatly and installed their own director in 1936, named Walter Passarge.

Passarges first job was to make a list of prints and drawings which were examples for what Nazis called "degenerate art". And at the end until august 1937 roundabout 600 artworks were removed from the museum in Mannheim and destroyed or sold to foreign countries to fill the war chest.

What can't be explained very well until today – why many modern artworks weren't touched and remained in the museum. Why did the Nazis taking only a great part from the collection of so called "degenerate art" but then forgot to take away some of the finest, the most prestigious works? Especially those?

Last year, in 2018, a list was found made by Walter Passarge with exactly those artworks on it. Now - why this second list? Was it a secret list? It seems Passarge himself, the museum's director installed by the Nazis, decided to hide some of the artworks form his Nazis-friends to help them survive the barbarous cleaning. As if he loved art more than ideology.

But this is only speculation.

in roundabout the same period between 1955 and 1975 Peter Alexander had 35 top 10 hits and the Beatles had 28 top 10 hits in germany.

It's estimated that 0,02 percent of all germans actively took part in the generation of 68, wearing mini skirts, demonstrating against vietnam war, interested in politics, dancing to beat music and having long hair etc.

That would fit to my own observation that I always see so much going-on in TV but outside my front door world doesn't seem to change. And most probably, if Peter Alexander was still alive and didn't change his boring style, he still would made top 10 hits.

And sometimes I'm afraid the same thing happened when we became democrats. You know ... 0,02 percent of all germans really took part ...

children under the age of 4 can't lie. The reason is an interesting relation: to lie you need empathy. You must understand what the expectations of your opposite are, his possible motivations and reactions, so to lie one must be able to put oneself in the position of someone else. Empathie is a very demanding cognitive task you have to learn and therefore children aren't able to lie.

Because of these complex intellectual conditions lying requires much energy. Needing much more energy results in needing more fresh blood flowing through the brain.

And this is the reason why liars often can be found guilty because they are sweating and getting a red face.

around 1900 it was common practice to exhibit black people in zoos in germany?

It seems the origins of racism was the age of "Aufklärung" and in Germany - long before Hitler - when they made education the ideal and called white europeans more educated than african, asian and south american people.

This was a thought not by Nazis but by the famous philosopher Immanuel Kant.

And did you know ...

there were 6 million jewish people murdered by Nazis during the third reich. But going back in history a little more - it's estimated in german colonies in Africa there were murdered 20 million black people.

No one is save from racism. It's a general evil.

Do you know,

I get the nagging feeling I'm playing this game like some sort of solitaire.

And there is a group of artists calling themselves "Cracking Art", founded in 1993. The name comes from the refining process when crude oil is cracked and you gain naphta, the basic material for creating plastic. This cracking transforms things from the natural state into an artificial state - so it is also the very basic action that an artist does. Therefore the name.

No wonder, this group loves to create with plastic sculptures and every installation is like an attack of big artificial animals to a city. Like artficial life invading and overruling the historic infrastructure.

If there would be another SimCity Version - this would be amongst my prefered desaster - attack of the giant plastic slugs!

around 1920 a young italian man had the idea to overcome parliamentarism and to strengthen the monarchy by returning to decsissions by gutt feeling instead of endless discussion and instead of democratic institutions like parliaments and elections and different indipendent courts deciding, having one man alone with one strong voice leading. Pushing all dilatoriness by different opinions aside and making Italy strong again.

This young man, named Benito Mussolini, founded a group, named themselves "fascists" (from the italian word "fascio" - bunch) which very quickly became very popular and took political adversaries one by one off the track.

.. unti the 30th week of pregnancy the human brain is absolutely smooth and all those crinkles you see on a fully developed brain are a result of physical pressure?

This physical pressure results from the fact that neurons grow only on the surface of the brain and when they grow this creates a surface tension which leads the brain to interfold.

So the more you think the more neurons grow the more crinkels your brain will get. And those crinkels are very important for intelligence.

But be aware. It's also known too much folds in your brain are the cause of mental diseases like schizophrenia.

So it seems for a nice and healthy looking brain you should think a lot but not too much.

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is in New Zealand and is 85 letters long. And when it comes to other super long place names, it's followed by Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in Wales, Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg in the U.S.,
